RNC Strips Early States of Half Their Delegates

ABC News’ Karen Travers Reports: Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan announced late this afternoon that the party will go ahead with sanctions against the five states schedule to hold primaries before Feb. 5, 2008.

New Hampshire, Florida, South Carolina, Michigan and Wyoming will lose half of their delegates to the national convention, Duncan told reporters on a conference call this afternoon. The RNC voted 121-9 to impose the sanctions and Duncan, who has final say on this issue, said he will abide by the vote.

Florida will lose 57 delegates, Michigan 30, South Carolina 23, Wyoming 14 and New Hampshire 12.

Although the Iowa caucuses also are scheduled for Jan 3, Iowa Republicans don’t select delegates then so the state will not be subject to RNC sanctions. The RNC considers the January caucuses in Nevada to be a non-binding contest and therefore not subject to sanction either.

Today’s move will probably not have much impact on the way Republican candidates campaign. There are no punishments from the RNC against candidates who travel to five newly punished states, unlike on the Democratic side where the major candidates have all signed a pledge to abide by the DNC’s rules and not campaign in non-compliant states like Florida and Michigan.

It remains unclear whether the RNC’s threat will hold up, Republican Party leaders in these five early voting states have expressed confidence that their full delegations will be seated in Minneapolis next year.

Well I predict Mich will go dem no matter what, same for NH. Wy and SC will go repub no matter what. Fla is leaning repub, but it is no sure thing. So will the repubs really tick off a state they have to win if they want their guy to be prez by taking away half their delegates, thats a real hoot.

It really doesn’t matter….the Republican party has started to die with this election. I’m a Republican. It cannot stay together and ignore it’s party members. If Guiliani wins the primary it will split like it got hit by a giant earthquake. Ignoring key states will further alienate the members. If the Democrates do not win this election then the party leadership is full of babbling idiots.

dear repubs,
Please join us in putting the final touches on the failed modern neo conservative wing of your party. I can understand why you fear us, but join us for a few election cycles and let’s talk. When the future of this country is on the line we can avoid the hot button topics and decide on some strategy to attempt a recovery, and believe me at this juncture it is only an attempt. One thing you might like is we sometimes cull our own democrats, especially when they mess up and go the wrong way. There are several of those right now with a nervous pace about their business. We could start talking about the treatment of our military under your 2 terms, as you seem to feel my party does not care about the military. It is solution time, my friends, not blame time. There will be time for blame and blame belongs in prison. I am somewhat saddened that you don’t understand the immediate need to remove bush and cheney by easy impeachments, but we must not have your support or votes to do it, apparently. Kudos to ABC if you get to read this…CHEERS…Happy Days could be here again.
