Romney Blasts Clinton, Giuliani Together on Illegal Immigration

ABC News’ Matt Stuart Reports: Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is trying hard this weekend to tie Republican rival Rudy Giuliani and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton together on the issue of illegal immigration.

"We’re gonna have to pull back on federal funding to end the ‘sanctuary state of mind,’" Romney said tonight in Atkinson, NH, adding that "it’s something which I think Mayor Giuliani and Hillary Clinton have in common."

Romney is proposing that the federal government pull back funding to "sanctuary cities," and "to states that say they’re giving drivers’ licenses to aliens," and "states that provide in-state tuition credits" to the children of illegal immigrants but do not offer the same rates to out-of-state students.

Romney also began airing a new ad this week, although not announced by the campaign until today, saying that "Hillary Clinton and the Democrats have it wrong on illegal immigration."

Romney has previously criticized both candidates over the issue of illegal immigration. Most recently, Romney said that Sen. Clinton was wrong to express support for New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s plan to give driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. Over the summer, Romney began going after Giuliani claiming that New York was a "sanctuary city" during his term.

Romney previously has faced criticism from Mayor Giuliani on illegal immigration, saying that as governor, Romney didn’t stop some cities in Massachusetts from declaring themselves "sanctuary cities."

Romney is 100% right on this critical issue because it goes back to the root cause of government spending part of which is dealing with all sorts of domestic problems causes by illegal immigrants.

I wonder if Romney knows the basics of Immigration and what it is all about. Leave alone his knowledge of the difference between legal and illegal immigration. Once he learns and understands the basics then let’s give him a chance to talk about immigration.

No state or city has the lawful authority to grant sanctuary to the illegals now living there. Since the illegals crossed state boundries, the authority rests exclusively with the federal government, and it is the duty of the federal government to deport them. Secondly, giving tutition credits to illegals, and not too out of state students, is in fact discrimination since it is based soley on racial guidelines

Further, any state or city that does attempt to defy the constitutional authority of the federal government, regarding the immigration of these illegal aliens, be designated as sponsering and supporting terrorism and be denied all federal funding whatsoever, until the leaders are removed from office either through impeachment or voter revolt

77% of the population is against illegal immigration. A representative of the people should easily be able to “represent” their constituents! Unless of course, they personally are only in politics for their own personal power and not to represent the people. Illegal immigration is criminal and breeds other criminal activity. Oklahoma has figured it out and they are cracking down on the illegals, their landlords and employers. The Illegals are fleeing Oklahoma, but are further infesting the surrounding states. Since the federal government is a complete failure in enforcing our immigration laws, it will be up to the states to fend for themselves. Of course, the American Criminal Liberties Union will fight for the criminal non-US citizen against the US citizens. I fully expect that, but I hope the ACLU is destroyed in court if they choose to represent the illegal alien over US citizens. Illegals, it’s time to move on. Your days in the US are numbered. Any elected representative who works to support the illegals over their own constituents should be arrested and tried for treason.

The Governor does have some experience with the issue. His own ancestors were forced to immigrate from New York all the way to the western region United States where they found sanctuary.

Romney keeps showing how “un-Christian” he is by his stand on immigration … he should stop trying to win political points on the backs of the poorest people in our population. This doesn’t get us to a solution … only increases the problem. I would like for him to immigrate back to Utah … and continue his work as a “bishop” in the Mormon church.

Romney is an empty, talking head. Let me get this straight – he proposes to curb illegal immigration by cutting funding to states that have a high proportion of illegals?
Certainly sounds like what he’s saying.
I’d love to see how many company officers in Massachusetts were imprisoned during his time as governor for hiring illegal aliens.
My guess is, oh, about zero.

Romney and Hillary are trying to have it both ways. My perspective is that you either enforce the law or you are an accessory to breaking the law. This applies with equal force to presidential candidates.

I fancy myself an old-school democrat, and am a son born in the United States from immigrant parents [who came here legally in the 1970's]. They are citizens and speak fluent English. Both were from Canada [French-speaking Quebec] and Communist China. I was born here and live here. I speak English as my first [and preferred] language, I’m Christian, and was served nearly 12 years in the U.S. Army. I ‘AM’ [been, and always will be] an American.
That being said, I am vehemently against any concession to appease any proponent for illegal immigration into my country. During the early days of this republic, it was decided that English would be the language of choice between the former and another language- German! Now, we have politicans and lobbyists pandering to the Hispanic voting block only for cheap votes [as well as labor] which will not serve in the best interests of the hispanic population in America.
Issue driver’s licenses to illegals? Will they be required to pay for auto insurance also or will the taxpayer pick up the tab? ‘Sanctuary cities’? Is this another term for sweatshops on American soil? Choose your decisions very carefully, folks!
All the accusations of discrimination against Hispanics is ludicrous; while the very nations that practice strict [nationalistic and sometimes racist] policies urges [even demands] that the United States lax its own border security to them. Many Hispanics are decent, hard-working people who would like nothing more than safety, security, and opportunities to excel- that’s okay. But, all too often, they get caught up in nationalistic and ethnocentric rhetorical nonsense that crosses borders and divides people.
I support making English the official language of the United States [which will not ban other languages from usage, only in official functions]; I am against catering and pandering to any specific ethnic block- we’re all Americans the same. I am against ‘sanctuary cities’ and giving any benefits and perks to illegal immigrants and ‘unauthorized’ persons within our national borders beyond the Bill of Rights.
Finally, I am against any movement, action, or assertions to further divide the American population based on the ethnicities in question [albeit not the only basis]. We need to show them that it’s a proud thing to declare themselves Americans [without hyphens]and that we have a rich history and a great future our country as Americans!

The center is not a good position for any candidate for president to stand at.There are only two side of the road for the issue of immigration you either for it or against it.Mitt Romney definitely against it and for various important reason. In conrast the democrat candidates seems not so sure what to do and demonstrate how dangerous their position can be.They seems standing in the middle and waving at both side while noones bother listening to them.In the end it is fair to say Mitt Romney have the answer and the vision to solve our immigration issue although we might have to do the hard work to fix it.We cannot continue to give in to the illegals and giving out our taxes and dollars to other countries by way of remittances.

It is good news that as time goes by all candidates (from both sides) tend to become tougher on immigration, specifically ILLEGAL immigration. The end result could be that the next president will likely enforce english, remove ‘sanctuary cities’ and much more…

Kaven Thibault’s comments are the most
“American” and make more sense than the others. Maybe she should enter politics and carry some of the good old
American sense dictated by our forefathers into this stupid existing structure composed of “pocket liners.”

Look out for the North American Union, one of the big 10. (Some will understand, others will not.)
Our elected politicians, the ones who are supposed to listen to the voice of the people, are not protecting the people. The allowed onslaught of illegal immigrants simply causes more polarization of this country’s populace, but the politicians will only speak out when they retire and write their memoirs.
I am not against any person gaining citizenship– I think it is awesome to be an American. Just do it the right way, go through the paper work and proper channels.
