Students Catch Zzzs During Obama Speech
ABC News’ Sunlen Miller Reports: In Alton, N.H. Democratic candidate Barack Obama faced a tough – and groggy – crowd of high school students who proved that inspiring young voters is as hard as they say it is.
While Obama declared, "I want young people involved in government, I want to make government cool again," some members of the audience from Prospect Mountain High School seemed less than impressed.
In fact, some were sleeping. Watch the video HERE.
At least six students were dead asleep, one completely laid out on her side in an open area of the bleachers. Numerous others had their head down on their laps, or leaned back to back against each other, only slightly paying attention.
Obama, near the end of his speech, like a teacher nearing the end of class commented, "Everyone’s getting restless, everyone’s starting to rustle."
Obama continued for six more minutes.
Then, class was dismissed.

Maybe those six kids were already stoned or hung over? I’m serious.

Maybe these students were just trying to make a statement like I am Republican and I don’t want to listen. They should have just stayed out of the room. Or maybe they were just kids being kids and the media made news out of it… once again trying to make Obama look bad…

This was an obvious attempt by the students and administraitors to show SEN. Obama no respect but all it shows is a gym full of lazy, sorry high school students and teachers. This has got to be a school of under acheiving bums. (administraitors and students)

Looks to me like a school full of hungover drug addicts and bums. Ther is no learning going on in this school. These young morons will not vote anyway.

I attend the school that Senator Obama spoke at that day, and I would just like to say that if that photographer was actually there to report a story, he would of gotten a shoot of the crowd of students that were actually paying attention. As a matter of fact the ones that really matter are those students that have a vote in the 2008 elections. Most, if not all of the students featured in that clip were under classmen who can not Vote. If he kept turning the camera and not focusing in a minimal section of the gymnasium, you would all seen that this was not the case for the majority of the audience. Do not be fouled by false advertisement, and that is exactly the case for this article.

I have to say as one of the students that most likely people where asleep but you’ll always have those few people that don’t care. Honestly, I didn’t want to listen to a candidate talk about things that i can’t even vote for.

Hey there
ya um i am one of the students
and our school is not full of drug addicts and alcoholics thank you very much.
Our students are very respectful and look at how our seniors turned out after graduation!
I am a freshman
and from what i saw most of our students were very into it many of the freshman wanted to ask questions which shows that we were paying attention.
This is a stupid article on something that is a total lie.
I agree it was rude for SOME of the students to sleep and were using it as an excuse to get out of class
but most of us were paying attention!
those induviduals do not represent the characteristics and opinions of the whole school.

This is ridiculous you caught us right in the middle of the day your right some people shouldn’t of been sleeping but most of us aren’t even old enough to vote.
just becuase some were sleeping and not paying attention you should not judge our school.

I attend Propsect Mountain, and we are one of the best schools in the state. I think its ridiculous that the media would focus more on the students, reactions than the speech itself. Apparently the reporter wasn’t interested in reporting an actual story.
First off, Prospect Mountain is one of the best schools in the state. This is a false advertisement, and our school should not have its teachers, administrators, and productivity judged by this.

Since when do you need to have your eyes open to listen?
Yeah, maybe some kids were sleeping. But do you know how many people were in that auditorium? Did you count the number of people listening intently?
You probably wouldn’t be able to see more than 10 people on that video who are sleeping, or not caring to listen to what Barack Obama has to say.
As others have pointed out, many of the students attending that speech were underclassmen. It’s not up to them to vote, they can’t make the decisions, and they don’t have the power.
At what point of time was this video taken, during the speech? Near the end? After countless minutes of someone standing on a stage in front of you, eventually everyone will lose interest.
Since when do we judge the whole by the impression of a few? Why should you people focus on the bad?
I didn’t see anyone saying ” Oh look! 90% of the teenagers in that auditorium were listening.” Everyone focuses on the bad. That’s the trouble with America these days. We didn’t become the great country we are because we focused on the bad. Where’s the loyalty?
These kids are the future. Like it or not, and you should be there to support them whether a choice few would like to participate or not.
Can you honestly say that when you were 15 years old, you were interested in the political campaign of the time? Were you itching to get out there and cast your ballot? Or were you chasing girls, playing sports, and enjoying your youth? Don’t forget what it means to be young.
The only ignorant people are the middle-aged members of society who have nothing better to do than criticize, ridicule, and insult the group of people who will someday run this country.
I don’t go to this school. Let myself be an example that we’re not all stoners and hungover brats.

As a student that goes to this school I would like to say that I am appalled that something like this would be put on the news. There are maybe 6 students out of 600 sleeping. For people half way across the country to be judging us instead of paying attention to what is happening in their own community is really just sad. No one at our school was high or drunk. For that to even be speculated is outrageous. We are high school students, we are not perfect, but for us to be subjected to this kind of treatment is terrible.

This video clip and article is an absolute disgrace. Not towards the students of this school BUT TOWARDS THE MEDIA. I was in the audience the day of Sen. Obama’s speech and was in a large group of people who were devoutly listening to what he had to say. This is a horrible portayal of PMHS. This young, excellent school has surpassed everyones expectations in sports, academics, and school spirit. PMHS is home to the 2006 NH principal of the year 2007 Class M NH baseball champions and has an impressive reputation in New Hampshire. Maybe if the media had focused on more than 6 students of this 600 student school, you would all see what Prospect Mountain High School is truly like.

Is this all the media has anymore? I used to go to PMHS and it was in the top high schools for the state. The video showed a small portion of kids, who were all deffenitly not even close to being old enough to vote. More than half of the people weren’t even old enough to vote. Not everyone likes politics, so why listen? The students didn’t have a choice if they wanted to be in that assembly or not, it was on their schedules for the day. Having something like that in the middle of a school day, just before vacation, what can you expect? Students are going to be tired, 16 & 17 year old kids aren’t going to be like “WOOT! POLITICS TIME! BETTER GET MY NOTEBOOK & PEN TO TAKE SOME NOTES! I CANT WAIT!” Not at all, don’t turn it around and say that the school is full of druggies and they were all stoned. And, if you knew half of anything, half way through the school day, someone isn’t going to be STILL stoned & go unnoticed to begin with, and even if they were, that right there im sure would have been a huge buzz kill. But besides the point, prospect is huge on drug prevention, they have many things set up to prevent the drugs. I think you should check into other news articles and see how last year prospect had the principal of the year, and was in the top listed schools for the state. Get the facts straight, and try to understand the fact that young kids don’t want to always listen to a bunch of politicians talk about stuff that they probably don’t understand in the least bit. Thankyou.
Posted by: None | November 25, 2007, 11:15 pm 11:15 pm
Imagine this:
You’re back in your teen years, Did you even give a crap about what politicians had to say? Was it FUN? how about EXCITING? No it wasn’t Politics were/ and still are boring. Especially to a group of 14-18yr olds. Most of which wont be able to vote for another 1-4 years.
It’s a sad day in America when people are so quick to presume the worst of a mass of minors. Being an alumni to that specific school I find it hard to believe that a whole of 1% of students can represent Prospect Mountain as a “school full of school full of hungover drug addicts and bums.”
Considering that it may just as well be possible that they were tired. It was 2hrs before the school day was about to end into a glorious 5 day break. The first of the School year might I add.
So maybe it would be best to get your facts straight before you’re so quick to judge such a good school. By the way it wasn’t just the students who were un-entertained; I noticed a few of the faculty who were uninterested in what Senator Obama had to say about “current issues”
Posted by: Tyler Donnelly | November 26, 2007, 12:13 am 12:13 am
Firstly, as an alumni who was not present to hear Mr. Obama speak I feel that there is little that I can say that has not yet been said. However, my two younger sisters were in attendance and from what I have heard from them and others as well, the vast majority of the student body was incredibly respectful and attentive to Mr. Obama’s speech. While I feel that it is incredibly unfortunate that not all of the students were willing to show Mr. Obama the respect he deserved, I feel that it is unjust to condemn the school as a whole based on the actions of a few bad apples.
Secondly, I find it hard to believe that in a media world so saturated with interesting current events that ABC deemed it necessary to write an article about high school aged kids sleeping during a speach. Was the sleeping inappropriate? Yes. Was it newsworthy? Certainly not.
Finally, I found that the most disturbing part of this story was not the story itself, but rather the user comments. I find it outrageous that adult readers across the country feel that it is necessary or appropriate to label these students as a “school full of hungover drug addicts and bums.”
These comments were not only misguided but were also ignorant and hurtful.
But I am also disappointed by the comments made by some PMHS students and alum. While the majority of the pmhs representitives presented valid arguements, more than one person’s comment has reflected poorly upon the school and for that they should be ashamed. PLEASE, if you truly want to defend our school do not make excuses for the poor behavior of a few (for you should not have to), and above all refrain from using vulgar/racist language. Nothing can reflect more poorly on your school.

First let me say that I am a parent of two students attending Prospect Mountain High School and neither one of my children are druggies or drunks! However, one of my children was sitting there with his head in his hands looking dazed. He works after school, comes home does homework and has no interest in politics at this time in his life, he is only 16! Did anyone mention that Obama’s speech was an hour and a half long? Add to this that most of these kids can’t even vote and it was the day before a 5 day holiday weekend! What made him think that going to a school and addressing a bunch of kids would produce overwhelming enthusiasm? Prospect Mountain HS is a great school and I think that it is getting a bad reputation for nothing. Go to any other school and see how many kids are sleeping in the class rooms. Does this make them bad, hung over, druggies? No, it makes them kids!!! With all the other issues in the world, why focus on a few kids that fell asleep during a speech?

Alright…..All I can say about the press is that this is a ridiculous story!I was there and listening and to tell the truth I could see eveybody, and most to almost all of the students where paying attention in that gym. There were very few that didn’t but if you’re judging the whole school on a few, then you’re just stereotypical and not even looking at the good things that our school has acomplished. It seems everytime we do something good or its a public event you people turn everything around and screw with our words. Why was the reporter even watching the non-participating students when he/she was supossed to be watching obama and getting news on him?Our school is not full of stoners or drunks and if you believe that then you really pay too much attention to the media before figuring out the truth or looking to the past at the achievements that this school has strived so hard for.Why even focus on the ones who weren’t paying attention? It seems like the press is trying to make a bad name for our school when pretty much everybody was paying attention.

I’m a senior and i think that this is completely RIDICULOUS. We are one of the best schools in the state. There was only around 10 students sleeping at the most. And they were all under-class men. They didn’t show the senior class who has just about all the students that can vote. Everyone i saw was paying attention. I stayed after with a bunch of other students to see Mr.Obama and ask him questions that were not answered during his one and a half hour speech. I asked him his stance on gay marriage. The press didn’t pay attention to the real story they just payed attention to the few kids that were not paying attention.

Wow, you’ve taken a situation, spun it out of proportion and printed it as fact. How impressive of you. I’ll have you know, the atmosphere was outstanding. Certainly held my attention better than anything ABC has ever presented. Just because a few kids lost interest (I don’t see anybody sleeping in that video; there’s a difference between being bored, laying down and falling asleep) doesn’t mean the school as a whole is completely worthless. Why don’t you focus on something actually worth our attention instead of printing a ridiculous story like this in a desperate cry for attention? Please quit your jobs.

why don’t you put the good things in there instead some lies. why didn’t you put in the amount of questions that your faculties , students ,families that attended should not be disrespected. There was about 95% of our school body was paying attention and it might be more and it might be less but who cares about who listened to but you should of put the stuff on the speech and you should not try to destroy our great school.the kids fell a sleep really did not want to be there so they fell a sleep.

As a student that was ACTUALLY at the event that so many of you have so kindly taken to bashing, but unfortunately were unable to attend, I am particularly curious as to what some of you would have liked the administration to do about the 6 out of about 600 (about 1%) of people that were not paying attention? Because last time I checked, forcing kids to be interested in something is really not possible. I was also interested in how quick you were to judge our school after seeing a 1 minute and 22 second video of the 1% of our school that was uninterested in seeing a political speech. From this 1 minute 22 second video you seem to be fairly confident that, as you put it, we are “a school full of hung over drug addicts and bums.” I mean I only go there so how would I know, but I didn’t see anyone high or hung over during Obama’s speech. What I did see, because again I was ACTUALLY there, were a few sleepy, under-age kids on the day before Thanksgiving vacation who were surprisingly uninterested in the political views of a presidential candidate.

I’d like to start off by saying none of those kids were on drugs. It wasn’t right of those kids to be in there falling asleep but why does the media always have to focus on the negative things. I’m a senior at this school. As i watched the video that was played not once did the camera men rotate the camera around the school. They neglected to see all of the students who were watching and listening with anticipation. How about when the students were given the chance to ask questions? Why wasn’t that shown?

I love how the video returns to the same footage time and time again. Yes, I saw those five students last time; anything new to say, ABC? Oh wait, no, there isn’t! You’re so desperate for ratings that you’re running a smear campaign against both Obama and PMHS because ten TEENAGERS were bored during an assembly. Oh, the relevance! Stop me now before I’m crushed under the weight of your incredible insight! If the best you guys can do, it’s no wonder nobody pays any attention to you anymore. In the video they concentrated on the negative when in all actuality there were a lot of us who were paying attention. Prospect Mountain High school is a great school. This is merely one side of the story.

This reporter obviously wasnt very intrested in what obama was saying either or else his focus would have been on that not on the underclassmen who cant vote. you have to take into consideration that this portion of footage was from the last 20mins of a 2hr speech. i havnt see anything about the huge group of students sitting right in the front intently watching, they are the ones who are going to vote in this election.

i think all of the stupid media rumors are ridiculous. We are a very bright and well educated school and we deserve much better than to be slammed by the press. Like many of my fellow students have said, we are not able to vote yet and it was the middle of the day. You cant expect us to be 100% jumping around and eyes wide open. Yes, some of the student could have been a little more awake but it doesn’t mean we don’t care.

Hi im a student at PMHS and i don’t like the accusations being made against our school. We sat in our gym for an hour an half and most of us were paying good attention to what Mr. Obama had to say. But honestly I don’t think this has anything to do with us and our school it has to do with Obama and trying to make him look bad. Honestly whoever recorded this video i have so much pity for, because he should of been listening to what Obama had to say not filming the kids. That shows just how much interest he really had. So I think before you judge Obama or the students and faculty of prospect mountain high school you should get the story straight.

I am absolutely appalled that the media was so desperate for a story that they had to focus, literally, on 1% of our school’s student body. Prospect Mountain is one of the highest ranking schools in the state of NH. We have an excellent staff and our students have exceeded everyones expectations in academics, athletics and school spirit. We were home to NH’s principal of the year in 2006 and the Class M Varsity Baseball State Champions, and we have had many other impressive achievements in our short 4 year existence. For people across the country to be so immature and naive and post comments such as “Maybe those six kids were already stoned or hung over?” or “This has got to be a school of under achieving bums.” is completely ridiculous. Prospect Mountain High School has achieved so much and is certain NOT full of drunks, drug addicts or under achieving bums! Of course there will be people not paying attention, you will find that in any situation, but the percentage of people paying attention to those in other schools I can guarantee is MUCH greater. More than half of our school cannot vote yet, but did the media look at all the students that can? No. They focused on a TINY percent of underclass men. I mean, seriously, 6 students out of 600, that is probably the best percentage any high school will EVER see. I just love how the media must portray everything in such a negative manor, seriously. This was NOT newsworthy, even if 6 of our 600 students may have been being disrespectful. I am absolutely disgusted by this…

As a past graduate of Prospect Mountain High School, I think that expecting a group of high school students to listen to a politician discuss his future endeavors to a majority of underage voters is a little bit ridiculous. I was very interested in politics in high school, so yes, I would have been interested, but for those 6-10 kids who were catching a little bit of shut eye, found politics boring. I believe that if you had the same number of adults in an office you would have had the same reaction. It has nothing to do with the administration or lack of values, it has to do with this society being so focused on “the problems” of todays youth and the lack of respect by young people. I think that ABC should be a little ashamed of themselves for choosing to report on the behavior of these select kids instead of questioning why they needed sleep in school. Maybe a job after school, hours of homework at night, or the boring speech for that matter. I just find it interesting that once again the media chooses to blame the kids.

This is the most disrespectfull thing i’ve seen in some time. Where are all of the administraitors? I think it’s obvious whats going on and the administraitors are all involved. That school is an absolute discrace!
Ahem, that is a quote from about the third comment down. I would just like to point something out. They can’t spell administrators, disrespectful, or disgrace(even with the assistance of spell check) and think they have the right to judge these students? It also happens that the video avoided the large portion of students who were paying attention and instead focused in on those who weren’t attentive(and were also too young to vote). Furthermore, this is a democracy, I mean, they can’t be forced to listen to views they may not agree with. What’s next, forcing them to vote a particular way?
Posted by: Ryan | November 26, 2007, 4:51 pm 4:51 pm
This video shows just how awful these teens are getting today. I was literally amazed by there incredible ability to turn an hour speech into a one minute twenty second video (which was dreadfully edited) to show the few seconds that sick students felt ill enough to be forced to lay down. Also, these kids must have been “… stoned or hung over…” during this speech. It only took place in a hot gym after a long day of school before vacation. It’s really incredible how only one side of the gym was shown numerous times at different angles zoomed in. The students who had the ability to vote (seniors, and students 18 and older) were offered seats much closer to Obama because they are actually given the ability to voice there opinions in the form a vote.
The school, Prospect Mountain High, was previously searched by drug dogs, but apparently they must have missed the hundreds of stoned students that are so evident during this speech and are leading our country to absolute hell as it was previously stated. Obviously, putting students with mental disabilities into the direct sight of the general public who have no idea of what the actual situation was is another good way to show how lazy the general teenage population is. It must be impossible that any of these students or administrators have a good reason to appear sleeping while actually they were yelling at students, or I don’t know, camera shy.
To anyone who did not attend and comments/writes harsh words about our school or the general teenage population: Our school is one of the best in not only New Hampshire, but the entire United States, and it’s disgraceful for your view of us to be obscured to such a level, and ABC to show us as “…the most disrespectfull thing [this viewer has] seen in some time…”.

Maybe to someone who was not there those kids would seem a bit “self-absorbed [&]APATHETIC” but what ABC News conveniently left out was that not one of those kids were of voting age and would not be voting in the 2008 election. They also, due to a certain level of incompetence on the part of the camera man, happened to leave out the large group of students and adults that WERE of voting age and WOULD be voting in the upcoming election that WERE paying attention and shaking the senator’s hand and asking questions. I would also like to point out that Mitt Romney spoke at our school about 6 months ago. There was no doubt a small number of kids who weren’t paying attention there as well, but there was a larger number who were. Not every student is going to be interested in politics, or one specific politician for that matter. The majority were interested and paying attention. The point being that this is a high school, and this was not an act of extreme disrespect toward senator Obama. A large majority of the people that attended the speech seemed to support Obama and his political ideas. One student, right before asking the senator about his views on gun control, even made the comment “I would first like to say that we are much more pleased with your visit then with Mitt Romany’s.” This comment earned not only immense applause from the audience, but a grin and chuckle from the senator.

i think that was really ridiculous you guys calling the school alcoholics drugies and bums and what this stuff about people sleeping hey its there chose if they wont to listen a lot of people in that gym was listening most of the people that weren’t cant vote and were sick and maybe even tired you would be to sitting there for a hour and a half our school but anyway i think what they said was bull they do have the freedom of press but they didn’t have to write false advertising!
Posted by: aleesha | November 26, 2007, 5:11 pm 5:11 pm
i go to prospect mountain and i really don’t think that the opinion you have on the school is the best one. Maybe some people were sick or had a headache or something. Do you really know they weren’t paying any attention to what Obama was saying? How do you know they weren’t paying attention while having there eyes closed or looking at the ground? Some people think it’s better for them to concentrate on something if they’re not even looking at who’s talking to them or the crowd they’re in.

As a senior that transferred to Prospect Mt High School from “a school full of hung over drug addicts and bums” to complete my last year of high school with a better education at a highly esteemed school in NH I find it depressing to see that the media has fallen so much as to not only film the footage of sleepy students but to also write a story and air it on national news. It’s sad to see that one of the students being labeled as ‘unattentive’ and not paying attention is actually a special needs student. Congratulations your attempt to demoralize a mentally challenged student by airing his “lazy” face across America has been successful.
I was one of the students mentioned as being “in the front row anxious and paying attention” I was so excited for Barack Obama’s appearance at our school that I couldn’t even pay attention in my real classes because to me him coming was the only important thing from that day, and I’m not even going to be eligible to vote in the primary, yes it’s easy to say that a presidential candidate deserves everyones full attention, but much like Barack Obama I’m realistic. Maybe he wasted his time coming to a high school full of underage kids that find it hard to sit for more than an hour, but at least he cares enough to not only come for the select number of us that find him to be the number one candidate for presidency but also to spend his valuable time informing us of current issues. Has anyone asked Barack what he thinks of the six students with their eyes closed? I doubt he, along with the entirety of the gym, noticed. It’s a high school, get serious.
Posted by: Jennifer | November 26, 2007, 5:27 pm 5:27 pm
Why do people have to be so mean about our high school? The real story is ………… ….that the reporters couldn’t think of anything better to do other than focus on six people who were tired after an hour and a half speech witch might I add was a very nice speech. And another thing the teachers at our school are the best my civics teacher was excited about seeing Obama. I also want to know were you guys were when people took there (My civics class and many others) time to decorate the gym and made it look great!!!!!!! All I can say is …….BACK AWAY AND LEAVE OUR SCHOOL ALONE!!!!
P.s I love this school!!!
Posted by: samantha at PMHS | November 26, 2007, 5:27 pm 5:27 pm
Hiii. Let me just start off by saying I was paying attention, but oh…that stupid camera man didn’t even show the other 500 and something people in the gym, which is kinda retarded. It’s really stupid that someone would make something like this, such a big deal. Okay it was 6 kids. Oh wow, not that much of a big deal. Are people aware that we were sitting in that gym for an hour and a half…right before a 5 day vacation, ha, i don’t think so. The stupid thing is, is the camera man wasn’t really there to watch Obama speak, all he got out of it was 6 people maybe just resting there heads. People can listen with there eyes closed, yes, it is possible.
I think it’s a little rude for people to call us “stoners and alcoholics”. Oh & by the way, no one was stoned or drunk while this was taken. Also, one person that the camera man had zoomed in on for at least 15 seconds happened to be someone with special needs. That’s ridiculous. We are not a school made up of a bunch of alcoholics and druggies thank you very much. Our school is ONE OF THE BEST in the state. We have had a amazing group of people graduating with excellent scores on the SAT’s. Oh and our Varsity Baseball team one the State Championships.
I also think it’s kinda rude how the people on here are posting comments about our school when they don’t know anything about our school. Get your facts straight before you say stupid stuff like that.
Oh and if your going to post something on here telling us how were “drugs addicts” and “alcoholics”, make sure you learn how to spell. Your just making yourself look like an idiot. =]
Posted by: Lauren | November 26, 2007, 5:29 pm 5:29 pm
Making news out of this is completely ridiculous! I am a senior at the school and I thought the school was very well behaved. I was impressed with the questions that were asked.
I was also impressed with Obama. He seemed very genuine, and even took the time to sit down to and interview with one of the students on the school newspaper. Shouldn’t something like that have been a story instead?

By the way, it’s funny how the kids who were, according to ABC, “dead asleep” were somehow able to awaken at just the right moments and offer tremendous applause for Obama’s comments. That’s some powerful timing, there.
Posted by: Dack Rouleau | November 26, 2007, 5:51 pm 5:51 pm
I’m so glad this took priority over other stories. It isn’t like there’s a war going on or people dying in Darfur. I’m glad THIS is the kind of media we’re getting.
I’m not sure you managed to catch my sarcasm, but this is really sad. There’s so much going on in the world right now, but six students sleeping at a speech in Alton, New Hampshire is news.
Honestly, I don’t really see the angle here. Are you trying to make a statement about our school or schools in general? Is this a statement about Mr. Obama’s speaking abilities? I found him to be a highly energized and captivating speaker.
Are you Hillary supporters?

This is a disgrace to the world news as we know it. A reporter, so disinterested in a speech he probably cannot even comprehend takes the time to point out a few students who are not giving their full attention to Mr.Obama. It is rude, but some of those students obviously have good reasons. Maybe ABC should give Prospect Mountain a chance to speak on behave of what was said about us.

All the comments by the students from PMHS are true. Instead of focusing on the students that actually cared and listened, you focused on the ones that probably have jobs, after school activities and actually do their homework or study, which, surprise, would make them tired. I believe that ABC owes the entire student body an apology. My daughter is a student at PMHS and I know that she does not do drugs or drink and to say that they are all drug addicts and alcoholics is a personal insult because our children are better than that. This is the best high school in the state of New Hampshire and because a few of the students were tired is no reason to insult a fine school and good students. I await your apology ABC!

This is just another example of a reporter trying to make a news story out of nothing. I am a mother of two students at Prospect, a senior and a sophmore.I feel that your video and story was both disrespectful and degrading to our school, student body, faculty, and our adminstration. I am outraged that you ran a story that led people to conceive our students as bums and drug addicts. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Prospect Mountain is a great school. I work with some of the students from the school and they are both respectful and intelligent, and certainly not bums or drug addicts. I would like to applaud every student who has taken the time to express their sentiments about this appalling story . It shows their maturity. So do not sterotype our students. They desrve an apology and to be treated with respect and understanding. I would like to see 600 adults sit erect on hard benches, in a hot gymnasium for two hours listening to someone speak! Please don’t be ignorant and believe any of this media hype!

PMHS students and family- keep in mind that while ABC’s reporting may have been less than responsible, they were not the ones accusing the students of beeing “drunk or stoned”. Those accusations came from readers.
Posted by: Matthew J. Tetreau- Prospect Alum | November 27, 2007, 1:46 am 1:46 am
Matt, I know ABC didn’t say the students were drunk and hung-over, but they are the ones portraying the school as lazy and uncaring. They don’t come right out and say it, but they knew what the reaction would be if people saw this video. And, quite frankly, if the reporter wasn’t intentionally sinking so low just to get a story, then she obviously feels the same way.
The point is, ABC intentionally portrayed the school as lazy, stupid and uncaring, and now people across the country believe the school to be just that or worse. ABC needs to take responsibility.

Captive Audience
The students were kept in the gym for 45 minutes before Barack Obama’s speech started. Already soar from sitting on the hard seats and then they had to listen to him give his speech for another hour and a half.
This was a captive audience and it should have not been during a day when school was in session. These students have to be there and had no choice but to be there. It was a required day of school. It should have been a day when there was no school and then have the public invited there if they wanted to be there. I understand that it was a civics class that invited him and not the whole school. Most of the students that were there were forced to be there and are not able to vote because they are underage. That is a captive audience and it was unfair to do to the whole student body.
It might have been a better response if other candidates were invited to have a debate because not everyone is for Barack Obama or a democrat. I teach my children to be independents.
I think that the reporter is not a Barack Obama supporter and it showed in his reporting. I think that he could have come up with a different swing on the captive audience and shown the students that were paying attention and asking questions. This reporter made it look like our school is full of horrible children rather than the truth, that it was a captive audience. Shame on this ABC news reporter for expecting children to be perfect listeners while having to attend the political event during a school day.
It is my opinion that it should have never been. I think that if we can not have God and Jesus, Christmas, and other religious ideas in the schools that the politicians should be kept out as well esp. if they are a captive audience. Separation of Church and State in the schools should be observed.
I know many adults who do not vote and never have but complain about the way things are run in this country. Why not blog about those who can vote and don’t instead of blogging about students who can not vote. As for the one blogger who said something about being disrespectful, I have always been taught that respect is earned and not owed and to be a respecter of others is a sin because God is not a respecter of anyone. Those students do not owe him any respect and he was there to earn it.
My children are not druggies or dope heads or any other stereo type that the bloggers are saying. Most of the children that attend the school are very good children and I am proud of all of them for doing what they were told to do that day for they were truly a captive audience. They had to be there like it or not and that is not fair.
No one could have forced me sit there and be of great cheer but they expected the students to do it. It is an easy thing to expect children to be perfect when no one adult is. Students of Prospect Mountain High school, be proud of yourselves and ignore the ignorant blogs of the not perfect adults. They expect you to be perfect when they are not themselves.
Could a religious organization go to the schools during a required attendance day and force the students to be of great cheer and of full attention? Not in this day and age but the Politian’s can.

First of all I can assure anyone who does not attend Prospect Mountain High School that they have no business bashing our administrators, teachers, staff nor students.
It’s also quite astonishing that people all the way in California would feel that they have the right to assume that what was aired on ABC was a fair and accurate depiction of the events that transpired at Prospect last Tuesday. Nor does anyone have the right to label the school as “an absolute Disgrace,” or describe us as “lazy, sorry high school students and teachers.”
Anyone who attended Senator Obama’s speech would know that the school’s students and teachers were exuding enthusiasm and excitement for having been lucky enough to be part of the event. Students sported t-shirts that displayed phrases such as “Obama is my homeboy,” “Like the Seniors of ’08 Obama will dominate,” and “Barack the Boat!” The Senator himself even seemed impressed by the interest in his campaign. All day the school was abuzz with anxious whispers from nearly every student, all of which were possitive and respectful. Throughout the senator’s speech students laughed along with and applauded Mr.Obama, and near the end they joined in a chant with him and expressed their support shouting “Fired up? Fired up! Ready to go? Ready to go!!” and where were ABC’s news camera’s while this was taking place? Apparently it’s true what they say, the media seems to be very adept at portraying people and events in the worst light no matter how inaccurate the portrayal may be. It’s sad to see a network take a school that was home to last years Principle of the Year and State Champion Baseball Team, a school that has accomplished so much in so little time, and make us out to be disrespectful, juvenile delinquents when nothing could be farther from the truth.
You people, hundreds and even thousands of miles away, can believe what you’d like about our school. You can believe that we must be terrible, horrible, disrespectful students who are taught by incompetent teachers, but before you judge us just consider the fact that everything you know about us has been taught to you in 5 minutes of flash frame, computer edited, footage by a network that is certainly not interested in how 600 people are going to feel when they’re made to look like fools as long as 10,000,000 people have something good to talk about over coffee the next morning.

I feel that ABC had no right to portray our school in this way. What about the other 800 people in the gym that were paying attention?? Why focus on the 6 that were not?? I know for a fact that some of these people had medical problems or were just looking down at the exact second that they were caught on tape. Why can’t the news be talking about how Obama took time out of his busy schedule to come talk to a bunch on high school kids (most of which can’t even vote)??

For those people born in the 60′s and 70′s. how many of those people turned out to be top prospects of their class. “sex,DRUGS, and rock&roll” pretty much covers that era…?
should I say have things really changed?
Rather, do the more things change the more things stay the same. Are you surprised a few “non-adults” fell asleep during a political speech, let alone a regular speech from someone less important. Not that I am saying Obama is important. Politics are only as important as the US citizens that back it. I guess the media knows it. too bad for editing equiptment. So to all the negative posts toward the school from all the people who don’t have children of this generation. Don’t pass judgement on them when your generation wasn’t so great, and it is your generation who raises our “drugies”. So if your generation can be so successful, with all that went on back then. Why can’t ours. This is a fairly big school. and as a whole, the percentage that showed….or rather wern’t shown paying attention is greatly higher. Also this is one school how many others are, or will be portrayed in such a manner by the media.

Tax payer’s money and Barack Obama at Prospect Mountain High School
I am one pissed off parent because it was the taxpayer’s that paid for the day that Barack Obama was at our local High School. We paid for the teachers to be there and everyone else that helps run the school for the day. It was a required school day and the students had to be there or receive a non-excused absence.
It was our money that was being used to have Mr. Obama there and I am not a supporter of him. I would not want any of the others there either on our tax dollar because I know that whoever I do support, others in the community do not support the one that I do.
Why was this allowed to happen at the school when it was a required day for the students to be there? Why are the tax payers putting up with this?
Would the taxpayers allow a religious organization to be at the school during a required attendance day and know that they are paying for it? I don’t believe that it would have happened and it should not have been with a politician. I do not think that it should happen at any school at the taxpayer’s expense.
I believe that if the civics’ class wanted to see him, they should have had a field trip to a location that Mr. Obama was speaking at. But they didn’t do that and instead invited him to speak at our school at the taxpayers cost. I am pissed off that any politician was allowed to speak at our school at our expense. Did you realize that it was your tax money that was being spent for him to be there on a required day of school?
Then having ABC there to report it and making it look like our students are bums, drunks, druggies, and disrespectful. Was it worth your tax dollars to insult our children and us? You know that people that are making the comments about our students are also making the statements about the parents as well, and we paid for it with our tax dollars! I am pissed off at the ABC reporter and ABC for making such a report about our students when had to be there by law. I think that the reporter was bored and just wasn’t smart enough to show all the students that were involved and excited. This was a very high price to pay for the school, students, and taxpayers for just one politician that I do not support. ABC did not report that the students had to be there that day now did they?
Then my two students went on the board and posted a blog with their views only to find that ABC deleted their views on the required day of school. Many of the students have made posts only to have them deleted, was it because ABC didn’t want their views to be aired? Do they not have the right to defend themselves and their school?
Our students were a captive audience like it or not. They had no choice but to be there. With un-excused absences the students are not able to make up the work that they would have missed if they didn’t want to go see Mr. Obama. My two students went that day because of this. Did they want to see him? No, they didn’t want to go see him. We talk about the candidates in our home a lot and they know what our view on Mr. Obama is and I believe that they agree with us. They had to be at school that day or else. We the taxpayer’s had no choice but to pay for the day because it was a required day of school and we gave Mr. Obama a captive audience that was portrayed in a very bad light.
I don’t think that it was worth the money that the taxpayer’s paid for that day and I want to make sure that this doesn’t happen in our school ever again. We keep God out of our schools and Christ and Merry Christmas and other religious organizations out of our schools so why not the politicians? You paid for it Barnstead and Alton! Was it worth it?
NOT TO ME! KEEP THE POLITICIANS OUT OF THE SCHOOLS ON REQUIRED DAYS THAT WE PAY FOR!
AMERICA, OUR STUDENTS WERE A CAPTIVE AUDIENCE THAT DAY AND I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT WHAT THAT MEANS AND IF YOU WOULD PUT UP WITH IT YOURSELF. WOULD YOU? WOULD YOU BE THE CAPTIVE AUDIENCE FOR A POLITICIAN?
DON’T BLAME THE STUDENTS WHO WERE NOT EXCITED ABOUT HAVING TO BE THERE. IT WAS A REQUIRED DAY OF SCHOOL AT THE TAXPAYER’S EXPENSE.

I am a graduate of PMHS class of 2007.
You can not blame the students for falling asleep or being worn out. I was informed by my brother, who is a current student, that many of these students had to undergo standardized testing earlier in the day. Which I know from personal expeirence is quite exausting. In addition, this assembly was on the last day before Thanksgiving which, in opinion, was not the best time to schedule this.
I do not understand why the 9th and 10th graders were involved in this assembly because they are generally not of age to vote and have little or no interest in politics. The administration should have limited this assembly for 11th and/or 12th graders.
I just ask that those of you who are speaking poorly of the school please stop. This issue was caused because of poor scheduling and is in no way a reflection of a normal day.

PMHS is my school. even if i have graduated and gone on with my life PMHS is my school and i think its horrible how ABC has shown my school. I ask.. when will ABC.com apologize?

Evidently, as made apparent in the overwhelming response to the article and video our children/students really are paying attention, and do care deeply about their school, administrators, teachers and fellow students. I am proud of these young people for advocating so vehemently for the truth. In regards to the spin of the story it makes me ponder the lack of truth in reporting that takes place in our media, as well as how easily people are manipulated into thinking what the media wants them to. I’ll be suprised if this gets posted.

Because they think if its over telling th truth or debunking their story that they’ll lose veiwers or respect and their ratings will go down thus, making them lose money. And probably because we’re kids and not to be taken seriously until we can have an effect on this country.

I just want to point out that I just got finished reading a very long article about obama’s visit in the baysider for today…..I saw nothing negative about pmhs and in fact…the report was on what he said and his political standings and what he wants, plus some of the questions, which is what the report for all the news crews there originally was….I thought it was news worthy to point that out.Maybe I should be a reporter!
Posted by: Cora | November 29, 2007, 8:29 pm 8:29 pm
If I may say so myself it seems to me that some of you are not upset because your children were “forced” to listen to a politician speak, but infact you’re upset because that politician didn’t happen to be one of your choosing. And to say that you would like for politicians to never again visit the school is like saying that you would like nothing more than to rob hundreds of children of the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of the political stance of this country, which at the moment could use a bit of change, and a bit of hope, a country that could use informed and knowledgable youth.
You shouldn’t strive to rob students of wisdom for the simple reason that you are close-minded, but rather let them gather pebbles of information from any and all sources from wence they can obtain it and allow them to grow by piecing together the pebbles to form a solid foundation of beliefs of their own masonry.

This is just another typical example of the media showing only what they want to show. I guess they don’t like Obama. My neice was there and she was very interested along with most others. Shame on this reporter. With all the negative comments, it just shows how the media can influence the public.

After what happened in Rochester, NH; at the Clinton office, I would prefer that the politicians stay out of the schools for security reasons now.
It was our money that was being used to have Mr. Obama there and I am not a supporter of him.
I would not want any of the other politicians there either on our tax dollar because I know that whoever I do support, others in the community do not support the one that I do.
I am not close-minded to the students learning about how politics works and the ins and outs of it.
Like I said, they should have had a field trip.
Having the ABC there was not worth the reputation that they gave the school.

I think that the media got the whole story. Ohhhh only a few students were shown supposably sleeping. You know kids can listen even though they are not looking at the person. There are over 400 students in this school. Figure out that percentage. That is approximatly 1/100 of the school. Hey media show the kids that were excited about Obama there was three hours of this footage not two seconds.

I guess i just imagined that girl stretched out on the bleachers. The simple fact that now you’ve staged a little write-in campaign with no understanding of how disrespectful this really was just shows what type this school is producing. Not one student should have been sleeping. Not one! Show some respect !

So USAYEAH. Is this all you have time for? To sit here and read students comments about what you have so wrongly accused us of? Is your life that boring or does putting other people down (a bunch of kids) make you feel good? We were put into that gym with no other options for over two hours. On hard bleachers. I’d like to see you sit on those bleachers for that long. A select few of us can vote. Instead of saying we are all alcoholics and bums why don’t you try asking why they brought a presidential candidate to a high school. Keyword here: SCHOOL. Which means full of under the legal voting age and having no say no matter what anyone says. Students tried asking questions. They got ignored. For you to say that about us is all wrong. Try finding something to do then support Barack Obama so much you criticize a very small minority of students that can’t change an election.

I say:
The girl that was stretched out is a special needs student to start with.
Respect is not owed to anyone, it is earned! You would look stupid standing before the students and DEMANDING RESPECT!
I owe no one person respect. I don’t care who you think you are, I don’t owe you respect because your older or a politician, I still don’t owe you respect.
The same goes for others also; I don’t think that they should give me respect if I didn’t earn it.
The students had to be there by law, it was a required day of school; it was force on them to be there.
I would like to see someone force you to listen to a politician when you are unable to vote. Most of the students there are not able to vote. He had a captive audience.
I am proud of our students for doing what they were told to do that day!

Well,if they wish to critisize its showing they really don’t know about the applause that obama got or how many students were paying attention.Which concludes them being ignorant and believing everything like they would a hollywood love story.SO ABCs fans probably split like a hollywood marriage because of all the negativities aimed at PMHS when everybody knows how hard this school has worked to get where it is today. The baysider article for Thursday December 6 2007 was a really good one.You people should read it.And ABC should focus on the politics like they’re supossed to,not try to ruin an awsome reputation of a school.

Its a sad day when the media has nothing better to report, how about gas prices or the way we are being robbed everyday by the oil companies or the homeless, need I say more, SHAME on you ABC, what a joke your station is

I was talking to my dog this morning who is actually really smart, and he told me that it’s just like ABC to take something like this, and completely twist it around. You know what he is completely right, and for all you kids from other schools who are saying negative stuff about our school you are just jealous! Our school is the best, so get a life (My dog also said that)!

for your information, our school is not full of drug addicts and bums. i highly doubt that anyone was hung over either. i’m a junior at prospect mountain and a lot of these comments are extremely offensive. everyone seems so quick to judge our school and students, but if you were to check the records, you’d see our school has extremely high testing scores. we also recieved second place in the academic school of excellence in 2006/2007. so maybe everyone that is commenting from ohio and everywhere else should stop judging our school and making us look foolish. until you’ve come to our school, met our students, and looked at our test grades, i suggest you keep quiet.
