Edwards on Reporter’s Access: ‘My Campaign Is Open and Transparent’
Raelyn Johnson reports: For the reporters covering John Edwards’ presidential bid, driving around a snow covered Iowa may be an issue, finding a hotel room when all of the candidates have descended upon Des Moines may be in an issue — but access to the former senator isn’t one.
Edwards holds several press availabilities a day and staffers often survey reporters to see if they have a need for additional press time.
Today during the second press avail of the day in Algona, Iowa, I asked Edwards why he gives reporters so much access to him, as it was recently revealed in The Washington Post that the campaigns of his top rivals are giving reporters more limited access.
“My campaign is open and transparent,” said Edwards to a group of reporters. “If you want to be president of the United States, you ought to be willing to answer not just voters’ questions but the questions from hardened cynics like all of you.”

What a breath of fresh air! This type of gesture is just one of the reasons I think that Edwards would indeed make the best president. As we look back on the long 7 years of the Bush Administration, all we have gotten is secrecy, more secrecy, and cover-ups of other secrets we don’t know about yet.
We should learn from history folks!! If a candidate is evasive about issues while campaigning, imagine what their presidency will be like. I wouldn’t vote for a candidate just because of his/her transparency, but Edwards has more citizen-focused policies than the other candidates and was the first candidate to present many of them to accompany his forthrightness.
Given his personal background, he can identify with working and middle-class people in a way that the other candidates cannot. When considering the whole picture, Edwards is who America needs.

The people of NC know Edwards as a person with integrity and compassion for those in need. Most of his proposals indicate a desire to help average people improve their lives. His openness on the campaign trail is evidence that he is being straight with the people.
He has my vote!
