For Tancredo, What other “Major Announcement” Could It Be?

ABC’s Z. Byron Wolf Reports: The presidential campaign of Colorado Congressman and anti-illegal immigration crusader Tom Tancredo may be coming to a close. ‘May be’ because his campaign has scheduled a press conference in Des Moines for Tuesday to make a "major announcement" about his campaign.

Tancredo’s press staff and inner circle were mum on the exact nature of the press conference. But without a significant bounce in the polls and less than a million dollars in fundraising in the last quarter for which candidates reported receipts, Tancredo’s campaign would seem to have stalled. The first primary votes are cast (or in this case voters will caucus) in Iowa on January 3rd.

Really there are only two really "major" announcements about one’s Presidential campaign: that is starting and that it is ending.

Even if he pulls out of the race, Tancredo can claim to have left an indelible mark on the campaign. His bid seemed at points to hit a populist nerve in conservative Republican ranks and as Congress debated comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants earlier this year, Tancredo parlayed his anti-amnesty crusade into millions of dollars in fundraising for his Presidential campaign and his Political Action Committee, which is called Team America.

Tancredo arguably drew the entire Republican field to the right on the issue of immigration. After former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani sparred at the CNN/YouTube debate in Florida over who was tougher on illegal immigration in their moderate Republican in a blue-state or city former lives, Tancredo was able to beam on national television that they were trying to "out Tancredo Tancredo."

But as candidates with more money and traction in the polls moved into his territory on the immigration and amnesty issues, it has left little room for Tancredo to develop more of a following.

Tancredo would become the fourth announced Republican presidential candidate to end his bid for the White House. Former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore stepped out of the race even before the summer and has since launched a U.S. Senate bid, former HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson ended his bid after a poor showing at the Iowa Straw Poll in August and Sen. Sam Brownback R-Kans., was the last GOPer to end his candidacy.

Two announced Democratic candidates have dropped out of the race — former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack and Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh.

the only 2 dems worth wasting a voting effort on were gone before anyone even cared about the race. The political air is sad to say the least in this country..

i hope it is not confirmed that Tancredo leaves the race, he was the best to handle America’s foremost problem of illegal immigration. He was also the most honest judging that he boycotted the univision debate in spanish (aka debate for illegals as some call it). Tom stay with us!

Ron Paul has said that they are both in the Liberty caucus in Congress and Tancredo’s views are closest to his- free markets, end of IRS, immigration, America first, no UN, etc. I hope he endorses Ron Paul.

I hope so. I thought it was funny that none of his political campaign rallies were covered.
What I find really ironic is that this 3rd generation Italian doesn’t realize his grandparents were WOPs (WithOut Papers), so they were here illegally too. Wonder when Mr. WOP jr. is going to have them dug up and sent back to Italy?
He is nothing more than a dangerous xenophobe afraid to debate average Americans who can counter everyone of his dangerous positions. His campaign of hatred is not supported by the majority of Republicans, which is probably why he is so bitter. Unfortunately for the Republicans, he has caused them tremendous harm which will probably cost them the 2008 election.

Tancredo announcement to drop his presidential bid is a blow to the “chip on the shoulder” and “my truck is bigger than your truck” crowd. Maybe common sense, civility, and decency are options now.

I hate to see this kind of sheap politicians who pick on the most vulnerable people to make political gain…the reason why he didnt get the support he needed was simply because the vast majority of the americans disagree with him…

Tancredo’s voice in the wilderness is only a warning to the people of the nation. I liken our country to a raft floating on an angry sea and sinking because people who are coming here are trying to board that raft.
The illegal immigrants have no business accepting a free ride in our country. They have contributed only to the poverty problem that will sink this nation. They are people who don’t even know anything about us or our country. They only know that if they sneek over the border they can get freebies because our country’s leaders have been sheep when it comes to regulating our borders. Shame on all of them and shame on our leaders for creating this mess in the first place.

If Tom does drop out, I sincerely hope he would consider a VP run with Paul.
Paul/Tancredo ’08 would be a killer Team America.
If only the GOP would think like Americans instead of globalists…

“Think like Americans instead of globalists” – are you kidding, we invented the WTO, UN, NATO, IMF and the World Bank. You think like a reactionary Luddite George, not an American.
