Giuliani: Hospital visit was a result of a “headache worse than I’ve ever had”
ABC News’ Jonathan Greenberger reports: Three days after turning around his campaign plane and checking into a hospital after experiencing flu-like symptoms, Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani says he is in "fine health."
"I feel great now, I feel terrific, I’ve been tested out, everything came back 100 percent," said Giuliani, in an exclusive interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos.
Giuliani said his hospital visit was prompted by a "terrible headache" that began developing Wednesday morning while he was campaigning in Missouri that got progressively worse.
"It got really bad at night, when I was speaking to a crowd and did a press conference," said Giuliani. "I got on a plane — I imagine what happened is the pressure of the takeoff made the headache worse than I’ve ever had."
Giuliani told Stephanopoulos he did not black out, and he made the decision six or seven minutes into the flight to turn the plane around, return to St. Louis, and check into Barnes-Jewish Hospital for a series of tests.
Until today, Giuliani and his campaign had not discussed the details of the tests he underwent, but in his interview with Stephanopoulos, Giuliani said he was checked for "everything."
"I mean you’d have to ask my doctor everything they checked for. I mean he put out a statement that I’m in very good health, that every test came back normal," said Giuliani. "They tell me I’m in very good health."
The statement Giuliani referred to was not, in fact, issued by his doctor. It came from his campaign.
Giuliani, who survived a bout with prostate cancer seven years ago, also admitted that he has not released all of his medical records from the past week in part because he is still waiting to get some of the cancer tests back. He said he expects the full medical records to be released sometime after Christmas.
For now, though, Giuliani said he’s been given a clean bill of health.
"I saw those doctors, they released me," said Giuliani. "I saw my doctor again yesterday and the only thing they advised me to do is to take one aspirin a day — which is not even a prescription."
The full interview with Stephanopoulos airs Sunday morning on "This Week."
Below is an excerpt from the interview:
Stephanopoulos: One big question this week – how you feeling?
Giuliani: I feel great now, I feel terrific, I’ve been tested out, everything came back 100 percent.
Stephanopoulos: Take us back through it, because the symptoms on Wednesday night must have been so severe to have you turn around that plane. What was going on?
Giuliani: It was a terrible headache, I mean all day — it got worse all day. It got really bad at night, when I was speaking to a crowd and did a press conference with Sen Bond. Got on the plane. I imagine what happened is the pressure of the takeoff made the headache worse than I’ve ever had.
Stephanopoulos: Did you black out?
Giuliani: No. My staff was very concerned so we turned around. I actually made that decision. Were only 6 or 7 minutes out. It actually made no sense to get on the plane. I probably thought of it. Once I got on and the pressure got worse I said let’s turn back. They decided, you better really check him out. And they did really check me out.
Stephanopoulos: So what did they check for? What were they worried about?
Giuliani: They checked everything. I mean you’d have to ask my doctor everything they checked for. I mean he put out a statement that I’m in very good health, that every test came back normal. What I’ll do now is – there’s also, I’m a cancer survivor. So there’s always the issue of cancer, so I’m going to have him put out a statement and then you know make everyone really comfortable that I’m okay. But they tell me I’m in very good health.
Stephanopoulos: Yeah, we’d actually like to talk to your doctor about it to find out what kinds of tests were performed, what the results were, what the final diagnosis was.
Giuliani: After Christmas he can address this himself.
Stephanopoulos: After Christmas?
Giuliani: Well, he’s tied up until then and also I’ve got to make sure I get all the cancer tests back, and he’s going to put together a complete picture. So that he can address himself to the whole thing so people can be assured –
Stephanopoulos: So you will put out all the records after Christmas?
Giuliani: He’s going to put out everything that’s appropriate to show that I’m in good health.
Stephanopoulos: There were some questions, though, about why no one was allowed to speak with the doctors on Thursday. Why the delay?
Giuliani: I don’t –
Stephanopoulos: Why the delay in talking to the doctors, finding out what kinds of tests were given?
Giuliani: I think the statement was put out right away.
Stephanopoulos: Well the bottom line was put out, but no one knew what kinds of tests were performed.
Giuliani: I see, I see. Well, he’ll address all that. He’ll address it all also in the context of having had cancer, what my situation is right now, that I’m cured of cancer. And that my PSA test has come back negligible. The whole group of things like that he’ll address himself.
Stephanopoulos: But you saw the doctors in St. Louis, your saw your doctor on Thursday in New York, yesterday —
Giuliani: I saw those doctors, they released me, said I was in fine health, nothing to worry about, no prescriptions even. So –
Stephanopoulos: And you saw your doctor again yesterday?
Giuliani: I saw my doctor again yesterday and the only thing they advised me to do is to take one aspirin a day — which is not even a prescription.
Stephanopoulos: And you’re back on the trail?
Giuliani: I’m back on the trial, ready to go, hail and hearty, feeling great and you know actually reassured by the fact that I had so many different tests and they all came back 100 percent.

I sincerely wish Rudy the best, but this is worrisome. Such a severe headache CAN be a sign of serious problems, some of which are life-threatening. Before proceeding with his Presidential campaign, Rudy owes us a COMPLETE medical report from his doctors, not the syrupy say-nothing “report” we got from wife Judith on ABC News the other night. Her so-called “statement” had “cover-up” all over it. Please, Rudy… tell your doctor(s) to release everything.

Sounds like it might have been a migraine. I suffer with those from time to time and once or twice they were so bad that I blacked out. If all his tests came back negative, there’s a good possibility the doctors will diagnose that as a migraine.

He was really cured by his endorsement from Pat Robertson and the 700 Club. They just happen to be praying and mentioned that someone with a bad headache would be miraculously cured. Works every time!

Rudy has a history of dropping out of a race when he starts to realize he can’t win. That’s what he did in 2000 when the polls were clear that Hillary was going to clean his clock, and that’s probably what he’s thinking about doing now that he’s off the radar in virtually every poll. He’s way behind in N.H. (not even campaigning in Iowa), behind in Florida, and behind in the national polls. I think he’ll drop out in the next two weeks.

Americans want real change and we want the most qualified candidate to win in 2008.
America is the largest enterprise in the world and only one candidate from either party is qualified to run that enterprise which is why I’m voting for Mitt Romney………..GO MITT!

Call me Rudy. I have fought for 40 years have “the worse headace ever” often & my insurance denies coverage for prevention coverage. Try being a severe migraine sufferer, and a TMD sufferer from an accident with 6 surgeries under your belt and having to fight your insurance carrier constantly. I’ll be willing to bet you’ve never had the double headache: the physical pain and pain of insurance denial, appeal, denial, appeal, denial. Sorry you were ill, but everyday people truly suffer.

This man does not look well at all. Look at his color something like a sheet. He needs to get off of the campaign trail NOW. God knows if he didn’t contract something from the towers coming down. He walked around the area without any pertection over his mouth or nose. He looks horrible just look at his color?
If I were his wife I would give him two choices me or the campaign?
He is not going to make it so he should pick his heath over trying to be President and that is a fact.

Interesting. I also thought Rudy looked very pale on Friday night’s ABC News, but I thought it was maybe just the lighting or camera, or even my TV set. Since the country first became aware of Rudy Giuliani in 2001, he has aged considerably and very noticeably. Politically, I don’t think he can withstand the religious onslaught of the Republican Party’s two currently-leading candidates. As a former Republican, I can attest to the fact that it is NOT the same organization it once was. The term “Theocon” perfectly describes today’s Republican Party hierarchy. Rudy may have “proclaimed his faith”, but is clearly not religious enough to be nominated. He should consider his health and resign from the campaign now, and perhaps he can recover from whatever is ailing him.
Posted by: rmberryman | December 22, 2007, 3:57 pm 3:57 pm
Addendum: There is ONE candidate running for the GOP nomination who is more like what the Republican Party USED to be: Ron Paul. Ron Paul is actually closer to a Libertarian, but is currently the most sensible candidate running in EITHER party, even if the media mostly ignores him. Mr. Paul believes the United States should be LESS involved in everyone else’s affairs. Hear, Hear! And he is NOT a theocrat!

Why in today’s society where HIPAA legislation has been put in to place to protect our privacy over medical records, do we think we have the right to bombard this man over his health records?
Posted by: juli | December 22, 2007, 4:03 pm 4:03 pm
The HIPAA laws (which are obstructive) have already “protected” the “rights” of the Virginia Tech mass murderer and allowed him to commit his crimes. My wife works in a hospital where even parents cannot get information about their own kids and vice-versa! And when it comes to a man running for President, we SHOULD have a right to know his medical condition(s). Rudy had my vote until a couple of days ago, but now I will NOT vote for him unless his medical records are released.

Rudy, give it up, you have too many skeltons in your closet to be our President. We don’t need our goverment run by the New York Mafia. Why were you working so fast to have the buildings of the World Trade center hauled away so quickly? We would like to hear from some NY Firemen and NY police about this.

The board is turning hateful because we are fed up with all the lies from government and all these people running for our President. We don’t think any of them have the goods to deliver. At least people are venting by writing and not using violence. Freedom of the press doesn’t just belong to journalists. Thanks to ABC for allowing us this freedom to write our feelings and concerns. When we are no longer to write and talk about what WE feel is wrong, lies or deceptions, we will cease to be the United States of America

I had suffered from migraines since I was a tiny child. These involved nausea, light sensitivity. I didn’t want to see, smell, touch, taste anything. I couldn’t keep down any medication. UCLA doctors didn’t know what to do with me. I suffered for about 35 years until I moved to Albuquerque – altitude 6,000 – 7,000 feet. It was there with the low pressure weather systems moving in so suddenly that I realized most of my migraines were weather / low pressure / barometer related. I moved from Albuquerque and have been migraine free for 2-1/2 years. I would imagine that the pressurized cabin Rudy was in did not have enough pressure and his veins/arteries expanded. There’s no place in the cranium to accommodate swelling, so you end up with a killer migraine. Rudy, get better soon. Be well.

A brain aneurysm, along with a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), would be one of the first things the docs would check for – after his complaints of such a severe headache.

I think he’d make a good President but his health – or anyone’s health – comes first. It’s amazing once it goes how everything else that once was important fades into the background. Plus he could be in remission from the cancer for seven years and it’s just not detected growing by standard tests. Tests don’t find everything, not by a long shot.
Posted by: Sally | December 22, 2007, 8:32 pm 8:32 pm
The severe headache symptoms – including blinding pain caused by pressure change in an airplane – are identical to those that I suffered from for over 10 years – until I saw an otolaryngologist and had an operation to clear out my sinus cavities. I had it done a year ago – have flown a dozen times since then – and NEVER experienced any more pain.

Sounds like a migraine and could be a cluster migraine which is very bad because of the pain level, and difficulty in treatments. Pressure points can be the back of head when laying down, so the person cannot sleep laying down.

Could Guiliani’s bad headache with flu like symptons be a sign of the cancer returning? He has been okay for seven years, so it could be a warning. Your body knows better than the docters test sometimes, docters don’t always get it right? He should really drop out since his pass is catching up with him anyway, because the chances of getting the nomination are slim at the moment.
Posted by: Alessan | December 22, 2007, 10:34 pm 10:34 pm
It certainly sounds like he had a migraine, which could have been brought on by all the strains he is experiencing on the campaign trail.
A migraine, in and of itself, probably would not have been enough to turn the plane around, however. It’s more likely he was also suffering from nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, etc … all of which can be consistent with migraines and can make them seem all the more serious. And thus we arrive at the “flu-like” symtoms that he initially complained about.
His doctor likely advised him to get a little more sleep, eat a little healthier, keep hydrated, and to avoid foods that may trigger migrains (like chocolate, caffeine, dairy) etc. And that “aspirin” a day is probably not exactly “aspirin”, but rather migraine medication.

One Excedrin Migraine over-the-counter tablet a day thins the blood and prevents a migraine. I know what I’m talking about. I’m a former migraine sufferer — that one little pill once a day works. Don’t make so much of this. It’s honestly no big deal.

I’ve not decided who I’ll vote for yet, but I think it’s important to have Giuliani in the running, the more candidates the better. It would be a shame for his health to impact his candidacy again. I think Hillary would have benefited from having defeated Giuliani for her seat rather than somebody thrown up at the last minute. It certainly would have helped her resume for President now. Ditto for Giuliani, if he had been able to continue, he’d be a stronger candidate now. They both lost something the last time they faced off (or didn’t I should say).
Also while I’m on the subject… Those of you who have already made up their mind have been suckered by buying either the republican/democrat party lines. If you’ve already got a bumper sticker on your car or a campaign T-shirt, you need to take a deep breath, go back and rethink what you’re doing. You want to be a rabid fan, get into sports or follow Zeppelin on tour or something. You’ve got until November, another year people, wait and hear it all before you make petty rash decisions on a stuffed suit’s talking points. None of the turkeys in this race are fully cooked, all of their platform are in outline form. Nobody has presented a complete and consistent vision yet, and if you’re convinced otherwise I’ve got some magical snake oil to sell you. I think a lot of the partisan, petty comments here reflect very badly on yourselves, grow up, stop acting like little brats. Make intelligent decisions, don’t just be a knee-jerk puppet for someone’s campaign.
Let’s wish Gulliani the best of health, because if he drops out it weakens the debate, the contest and in return the other candidates. Clinton, Giuliani, Edwards, Obama, Romney, Huckabee and yes even ‘lil Paul all need to prove themselves here. Competition is good. Your vote should mean more, let them earn your choice. Don’t be a sheep for anybody. Let the primaries decide who the strongest choices are, not an unfortunate turn in someone’s health.
And while I’m at it, what is this “he should just drop out because he probably won’t get the nomination” garbage? That’s straight up quitter talk, you must not have very high expectations for whoever your next President is going to be or yourselves. Give up when it gets hard? Anybody who thinks that way, should be deported by catapult and probably sterilized just to be safe.
Maybe I should run, I’ll grant everyone’s political wishes with a “dumb tax”, I see a lot of people here who could really help fill up the Federal coffers. My policies could pay everyone’s health care, taxes, bills, and buy everyone a new car! Make a difference… Me in ’08! I look really great in a suit too.
In the meantime, have a very Merry Christmas, a wonderful New Year, and remember it’s very bad manners to talk politics and religion when you’re drinking egg nog and exchanging gifts

Can someone point me to similarly intense questioning by Stephanopoulos concerning the health records of a candidate? First of all, it is no business of Stephanopoulos. Secondly, it would be illegal under HIPAA laws for any doctor to gratuitously release a patient’s medical records. Third, I want to see Stephanopoulos medical records including recent drug tests.

One could now go to Times square, use port authority, really cleaned up the city, crime went way down. I do not care how many wives he had, he has guts and is a true leader. I did not say he is the kindest or compassionate person, he is not, but he is a true leader. He has my vote! Same thing happened to me on vacation. I had a bad head cold starting and I flew down to Florida. Not a good idea as the plane cabins are pressurized. The headache was the worst I ever had after 15 minutes in the air, and when I got off I was totally deaf for 2 days. It seems you are not supposed to fly with any sinus problems for that reason. You can cause permenent damage to your earl canalss if you do. I was lucky. Rudi and his staff made the right decision. As I said .. I was very very lucky. If I hadn’t taken decongestiants during the flight I would now be partially deaf.

I think we saw some evidence of problems earlier at the Des Moines Register (“Does Not Register”) Iowa Republican debate. The “moderator” (Nurse Ratched) asked Rudy about police excorts for the mistress at public expense and when the camera zoomed in on him he was sweating like an Iowa hog on a hot day. It’s hard to believe he was fazed by the hundredth asking of that question. All the candidates should be releasing their medical records. Mitt Romney clearly the most qualified candidate to lead this great nation forward. He has two major enemies that he needs to get by though.
1. The Democrats

Almost all of the Democratic candidates favor open borders, amnesty and medical care for illegal aliens as well as strict gun control for Americans. Those sentiments are echoed by Giuliani, McCain and Romney if you look at their records. Huckabee wants to educate illegal aliens at the expense of American students and Ron Paul claims we can’t find them to deport them. ( try checking the protest marches ) If Texans start seriously talking about secession again I’ll move back to add my vote and defend the Rio Grande at one border and the Red River on the other. America is in serious jeopardy of losing it’s sovereignty. Maybe the Republic of Texas will fare better.

Just like they did with Nixon, Reagan, Bush, etc.
And they still think losing two out of two elections to each of them was some sort of Mission Impossible dirty trick.
These children are hilarious.

Any parity in Lib networks ever starring former GOP Prez Press spokesmen, like their Dem counterparts, Sallinger, Moyers, and Stephanopolis?
I didn’t think so.

I’m really sad that Rudy got a headache, but, really, dont you see that it is planned that Rudy gets a headache( big deal) and George Steponallofus gives him time to campaign for free. I’m just glad it was a headache and not a hemmoroid. seems like old George sure wanted all the details. VOTE PAUL!!!.

I live in NYC and feel as one of the previous posters, that Rudy had a huge impact in cleaning the City. However, I don’t agree that of the current field of candidates Rudy would make the best president. Rudy’s greatness was best displayed in law enforcement but he ignored the facet of being an effective uniter. As Mayor, Rudy did not sit down and at least listen to leaders of the black community. He did not demonstrate any racial openess or inclusiveness and that was a mistake. Also, in a number of times Rudy has been too stubborn to the point that it has hurt him politically, especially with regard to the loyalty and support given to friends such as Kerick. I don’t wish Rudy the presidency but I do wish him well.
