Jenna Bush Phones Home

ABC News’ Ann Compton Reports: As if she hadn’t been in trouble enough with her parents over the years, 25-year-old Jenna Bush pushed the envelope again — reluctantly — on national television.

The President’s daughter was taping an appearance on the Ellen Degeneres show, promoting her children’s book,  when the mischevious host challenged Jenna to pick up the phone and prove she can dial straight through to her father anytime she wants.

"They are going to kill me. I’ll be in so much trouble," Jenna moaned while tapping the private number into a phone which Ellen brought out from under her chair. "You’re not recording the number or anything?" Jenna asked.

No, but the phone was patched into the studio’s audio system and Laura Bush can be heard and the President, too, when he is handed the phone.

"Are you mad?" Jenna asked her father.

"No, not at all," he answered with a chuckle.

Jenna said she feared that after such a stunt she wouldn’t get anything for Christmas.

And how could she reach her folks so easily?

Mrs. Bush staff tells ABC News it was the one evening at the White House with no holiday receptions, and President and Mrs. Bush just happened to be sitting in the residence at 8pm as the show was being taped at 5pm in Los Angeles.

Miss Bush, who recently got engaged to her long-time boyfriend, Henry Hager, may want to make amends with her parents if she hopes for a White House wedding.

Asked about that possibility in an exclusive interview with ‘World News’ anchor Charlie Gibson, First Lady Laura Bush replied, "We haven’t decided."

President Bush went on to give a rare glimpse of his personal and family life, adding, "It was behind, Aspen, the presidential cottage (at Camp David) Uh, Henry came, uh, earlier in the day and said I’d like to see you."

"I knew," Bush continued after some prompting from Gibson, "because I’d asked Jenna earlier that if Henry ever asks you to marry him, would you say yes. She said absolutely, I love him."

Asked whether he made the young suitor sweat, the President admitted with a laugh, "Well, yeah, a slight bit, not a lot."

I love it! Whatever issues I have with Bush – I do appreciate that he is a caring & devoted dad. It’s important that his daughter’s be able to reach him for a quick call (or prank Ellen call!) His job as father is just as important as his paying gig. I think the public tends to forget that a lot of days.

Dear Bellamomma,
It doesn’t matter a twit to you that Bush is a criminal? do you only care that he is a “good father”. That’s the basis for the rationalization of Mobsters and the shows like the Sopranos. I guess you don’t have a child that was killed in Iraq because of Bush’s nefarious actions.
I’m not forgetting anything, and what in the world does a “prank Ellen call” have to do with any of this. Not a twit, Bellamomma, not a twit.

Im sure he loves his kids and would never allow them to go to war. But he is so full of hippocrisy, i cannot believe how many people support this clown from the conservative mindwashing ….?? !!
He stands there talking about the issues that evangelicals want, including being against Gay marriage, yet both his own daughters totally support their gay married friends openly. And his VP’s daughter opposes his legislation and supports gay marriage openly.
How can Conservatives reconcile supporting a president that raised his kids oppositely from the conservative agenda values?
They are clearly supporting a two-faced, hippocrite.

The hatred towards President Bush by some reflects badly on Democrats. Hatred doesn’t look good on anyone.

It’s fine that many don’t like President Bush, but he is not a criminal.

Dick & George should both be celebrating the holidays in Irag, next to the troops, day in and day out until this war is over and every single troop comes home to spend christmas with thier families, friends. That would boost moral!

Jan…..are u not aware of the death and destruction of innocent lives in Iraq, caused by this idiot for a president? I do not feel hate for this president, I just think he’s in over his head when it comes to making decisions about what is best for thte US. do some research, write to your president and ask him about spontaneous recovery. this guy not only requires a mha or a psych eval, he was never treated for his addiction. this guy relapsed a long time ago.

Not since the Thanksgiving turkey pardon have I seen the Bush-haters politicize what amounts to absolutely nothing. Some girl called her dad on TV and it got some laughs. End of story.

Give me a break. Do you really think that she can pick up a borrowed phone, which has a call history on the bill, and dial the President direct and then have him appear unscripted? This was staged.
