Pages Gone Wild
In addition to the (now former) scheduler for Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., Mike McHaney, being caught up in an internet pedophile sting — see those Smoking Gun documents HERE and WARNING, some of it’s pretty vile stuff — today the Washington Post tells more about another House Page scandal.
Thankfully, this one does not involve any adults, just Pages Gone Wild.
Two Republican Congresswomen have in fact resigned from the Page Board, saying there isn’t enough supervision of the Pages.
"I thought the Mark Foley incident was a wake-up call," Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite, R-Florida, tells our friend Mary-Ann Akers of the Post. "Apparently it wasn’t … I would not let my 16-year-old grandson come up here."
Yikes.

I am a former Senate page and I am shocked by these new allegations. Yes, I wasn’t a House page, but judging by the tight ship the Senate page program runs I am baffled that these House pages can get away with what they do. Seems like the pages and House members need to learn a lesson from their colleagues across the chamber.

The article written by the Washington Post needs to be fact-checked. The person who wrote it got SOO much wrong about what really happened and didn’t bother to make any corrections. I was told by a page today at work that none of the other pages were “watching” or “aiding” the act EVER, and that there was a big miscommunication leading to this article. A more accurate article is the “Associated Press” article on this issue.

The fellow from Cantwell’s office sounds like a , and the page program sounds like it is never going to be put under control. It’s too bad, but neither story surprises me. I guess that’s partly why Congress has an even lower approval rating than President Bush. I guess, once one gets to Washington, D.C., pride, dignity, morals, responsibility–it all goes out the window. I’m actually sorry for the people who commented on the Post story by saying the pages’ behavior was no big deal–some actually made fun of the women who resigned from the Page Board. And some sought to blame Democrats, like Republicans were blamed as a party for Mark Foley and Larry Craig. I’m sorry for them, too. The people who govern in Washington—both elected and unelected—have wallowed in a cynical, permissive never-never land, completely unrepresentative of the country as a whole, for far too long. Neither party has been willing to stand up and fight the malaise. It’s gotten so bad that, at this point, I’m as suspicious of the finger-pointers as I am of the wrong-doers. This is a political blog, so to end on a political note, this sort of thing is just one of so many reasons why the country must not allow 36 straight years of Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton. And folks–please be skeptical of anyone who says it’s no big deal–it is, and it should be dealt with. And don’t trust people who say it’s all the Dems’ fault this time, or it was all the GOPS’ fault last time. It’s Washington’s fault.
