White House: Bush Knew in August Iran Had Halted Nuclear Weapons Program

ABC News’ Martha Raddatz Reports: The White House made a stunning admission Wednesday that appeared to suggest President Bush has directly contradicted himself about when he learned U.S. intelligence that Iran had halted its nuclear weapons program.

During a press conference on Tuesday, the President told reporters that he was briefed that there was new intelligence information about Iran,  but nothing specific.

"I was made aware of the NIE last week," Bush said Tuesday. "In August, I think it was [Director of National Intelligence] Mike McConnell came in and said, we have some new information.  He didn’t tell me what the information was; he did tell me it was going to take a while to analyze."

However today the White House is saying the President was told much more.

After taking a reporters’ question earlier today about exactly what the President was told, White House press secretary Dana Perino provided a response to reporters Wednesday night.

Perino stated Bush had been told in August that Iran suspended it’s covert nuclear weapons program.

"In August, DNI Director McConnell advised President Bush that the intelligence community would not be able to meet a congressionally imposed deadline requiring a National Intelligence Estimate on Iran because new information had been obtained just as they were about to finalize the report," Perino wrote in an emailed response.

"He said that if the new information turns out to be true, what we thought we knew for sure is right. Iran does in fact have a covert nuclear weapons program, but it may be suspended," Perino’s email said.

Perino also said McConnell told the President the new information might cause the intelligence community to change its assessment of Iran’s covert nuclear program.

The latest National Intelligence Estimate — declassified excerpts of which were released on Monday –  found that Iran actually shelved it’s nuclear weapons program in 2003.

Despite the fact that Bush was told in August that U.S. intelligence agencies believed Iran’s nuclear weapons program had been halted, the Bush administration continued to raise the rhetoric against Iran, calling for a third round of United Nations sanctions.

The President even warned publicly in October about a World War III if Iran didn’t cease their weapons program.

"I’ve told people that if you’re interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them (Iran) from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon," Bush said in October.

Ok so continuing to enrich more and more uranium, enough to build a bomb with isn’t proof of their ambitions either? Look they stopped their program because in order to continue it they need enough weapons grade uranium! I mean would you continue building a house without a foundation? Its not rocket science to point out that a nuclear weapons program cannot continue without the necessary materials.. Idiots

Unbelievable.
And yet he still sits in office and everyone in life goes about normal…as if there isn’t an elephant sitting in the living room.
He continues to do what he wants, say what he wants-when he wants. And doesn’t even get penalized for it! Unbelievable!
Bush is crazy. There is a void of intelligence, sensibilities, logic, compassion, etc, etc.

President George W Bush is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths in Iraq as a result of an illegal, aggressive invasion that he launched on the basis of lies. Now he is trying to launch another aggressive and illegal war against Iran, also based on lies. The man should be impeached and spend his remaining years alone in a cold prison cell.

What a liar! He keep’s on lying trying to pick a war with Iran when HE KNEW it was all BS. This man is a nut case and he should be removed from office. And we don’t need another Republican just like him!

It will take the us decades to rebuild the trust of the world, and george w. bush tore it down in eight years. We have to rebuild this great country of ours by taking care of our own us citizens and stop rebuilding-destroying other nations. We are only as strong as our weekest person, look around, we have hunger, poor people, no medical. give me God back in this country.

What evidence, exactly, do we need before there are sufficent grounds to impeach the entire White House gang? To paraphrase the neocon master, I’d rather not have the proof of their insanity be a mushroom cloud over my town and soldiers quartered in my livingroom.

just like saddam hussein? saddam wanted to convince the world he was close to having the nuclear bomb, until someone took him up on it. until recently, very recently, ockmadinijods own statements leaned heavily towards convincing everyone that he is close to having one with the thousands of centrifuges operating. why wouldnt bush doubt the intel or at least postpone changing course until it was finished being analized?

Remember, Iran was BRAGGING about their nuclear program and have no intentions to stop. I think the Intel is bogus

It’s funny to see someone who still supports this dolt, call someone else an idiot. This shouldn’t surprise anyone. This diversion merely takes people’s attention off Iraq and the real reason for this war. Re-distribution of this nations wealth.

Posted by: rewire1 | December 5, 2007, 9:33 pm 9:33 pm

Why is it that George W Bush has still not been impeached and removed from office? In fact, why are Bush and Cheney not arraigned before the War Crimes Tribunal at The Hague? US Intelligence (an oxymoron if there ever was one) fed Bush the baloney that Iran did have a nuclear weapons program prior to 2003. Bush threatened and bullied Iran on the basis of this fantasy. Iran has never admitted to having a nuclear weapons program at all and there was no evidence of it either. But that didn’t stop the threats of war. Now the same US Intelligence has admitted that Iran does not have a nuclear weapons program but Bush is still raging about some perceived Iranian threat. Let’s get some perspective here. Iran has the unfettered right to enrich uranium and that is set in concrete in the NPT. Neither the USA nor any other nation, nor the UNSC has the right to demand that Iran abrogate its legal rights. Bush has deliberately lied and misled not only the USA, but his allies in the Group of Six and engineered two sets of sanctions against Iran that had no basis for being placed. Now that idiot is still saying that Iran is a threat. The only threat to world peace is the USA, which has made war on so many nations, assassinated or deposed their elected leaders and governments, not complied with its international treaty obligations and is still doing so. It is high time that the USA was dealt with by a special UN commission and the best remedy would be if the UN removed the USA from the UNSC and removed its veto powers. The USA is far too dangerous, especially with what seems to be a certifiable imbecilic pathological liar as President. The quicker he is charged with war crimes, the better for this planet.

All the plays on words do not change the bottom line. Another opportunity for diplomacy thwarted by either the president’s ego or a calculated plan to further the cause for war.
I cannot beleive that any American president, any professed Christian, would miss the wide open opportunity to pursue diplomacy and perhaps if diplomacy succeded, a more permanent, more verifiable, nuclear monitoring program.
All it requires is an “I’m sorry, I was mistaken about your nuclear ambitions.” We have issue with them and they have issues with us. There is a great deal to settle. An olive branch in a moment of opportunity can save much bloodshed in the long run, and if it fails, the most powerful weapons of mass destruction in the world are in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean flying American flags.
I would not want to be an Iranian with a such an aggressive man in the White House.

It is incredulous to me that the Bush haters are so weak minded in their thinking about what Bush has done for us. What their feeble minds fail to comprehend is that everything he has done was to protect us from another 911!! What will it take for you haters to see the light? Maybe another jet flying into your personal residence will help.
Here is some more history for you weak minders to ponder… Chamberlain believed that Germany had been badly treated by the Allies after it was defeated in the First World War. He therefore thought that the German government had genuine grievances and that these needed to be addressed. He also thought that by agreeing to some of the demands being made by Adolf Hitler of Germany and Benito Mussolini of Italy, he could avoid a European war.

Kenny…you obviously supported a president who never served a day in his life in the military and better yet protested and openly stated on foreign soil how he despised our military! Guess who that was…your beloved Clinton!!! Who’s the real traitor, and look at the mess Bush inherited from his lack of doing anything about terrorism. You all disbelieve Intel’s WMD story…so why are you believing Intel now? Because it serves your agenda also known as Bush Derangement Syndrome. Bush was right not to make any decisions based on this information. The “facts” are very questionable and can’t be trusted at this point, especially with Ahmedinejad shooting off his mouth all the time about how their “peaceful” nuclear program is moving forward. Seems the hole has been dug by the libs and their unwillingness to acknowledge any kind of threats aimed at America and their allies.

What a liar! This man our sacred “leader and President” will wind up getting us all killed if given enough time. How can a man of such so-called integrity and religious righteousness continue to lie like he does and people still support him? He and his administration seem intent on destroying as much of America as they possibly can: Our armed forces are about worn out by the misguided, poorly executed and unending wars in Irag and Afganistan, our economy is worn out by near $100/barrel oil and the lowest value of the US dollar in modern history, our welcome is worn out in more countries now than it ever has been as hatred toward us increases seemingly unabated, our society is wearing itself out as we the citizens fight each other with such animosity in support of our precious political beliefs and whether or not we support the President and his policies. Yet, the lies continue (he knew in August, yet persisted in his accusations????) This is a guy who has become a victim of his own power and the “yes” men/women surrounding him who don’t have the guts to challenge him on his ideas. Unfortunately, this guy is the leader of our country, so as he goes down, so do we all.

For the less informed, previous Iraqi intelligence showed questions about its accuracy. Bush however, took them as facts and ran with it. In fact, their assertion between Al Qaeda and Iraq was proven false by intelligence leading up to the war but the ignoramuses in America believed Bush and Cheney instead and whoever opposed them were labeled unpatriotic. Thank you.

Bush ignored the intelligence in the months before 9/11 that suggested an imminent attack. He then distorted the intelligence to invade Iran. He blew the cover of Valerie Plame, whose husband publicly denounced Bush’s war plans with Iran. And now he completely refuses to let the current intelligence report get in the way of his plans for Iran. He doesn’t believe in intelligence. He believes in LIES.

So GW was told. He is to say this intelligence is accurate. If its not, doomsday is coming. Bad intelligence got us in Iraq. Dems, libs and repubs all voted to authorize the war in Iraq on bad intelligence. Now, magically, our intelligence is sound, accurate and we are suppose to believe it. Iran stated they were building there reactors so deep underground that NO bombs could reach them.

I am sorry to say that I feared a Bush presidency before the beginning of his first election. Regardless of the bickering back and forth, the reality is, our country has lost global respect, security has not been improved, the economy is out of control, the dollar is in a free fall, and our liberties as US Citizens have been slowly corrupted. Believe what you may, but our country has wasted trillions and accomplished little value. Security is a complete act of smoke and mirrors. Despite all of the rhetoric, the truth is that you can never have complete security. It is not possible. For every new fence, camera, guard, and frisk, there are still one hundred ways to circumvent. Let’s stop bankrupting our country to kept out the boogie-man. Let’s focus this countries might and industry in bringing back American values, respect, growth, positive domestic policy, and stop shaming us in the world opinion. It easy enough to shout opinions from your porch on main street when you don’t know the truth. I, having held the positions that allowed me to see the truth behind the public curtain am sorry to say I am ashamed of what this country has become in the last two terms. Seriously, when even the cabinet and top advisers are publicly disagreeing with the President, the public should take the hint. Unplug from the ipod and myspace for a moment and write your congress-person, form your own opinions, read the WSJ, learn about global economics, defense programs, and policy-makes and act to rebuild this country before the truth and our country’s future is swept away.

Hang on, you guys that are swallowing the latest load of baloney from the US (un)Intelligence brigade. They now admit they are wrong about Iran’s mythical nukes, they were wrong about Iraq’s mythical WMD and they knew it then, but they are saying that Iran stopped its nuclear weapons program in 2003. Is that so? Iran has not admitted it has ever had a nuclear weapons program, so why should anybody believe this latest revelation from the US Intelligence community? They don’t have a shred of evidence about this, just like they don’t have a shred of evidence about anything else Iran is doing, otherwise they’d be waving it in our faces. It’s not a matter of appeasement, nor a matter of deterrence. Whether Ahmedinejad and his mates are loonies is something else – there is a principle of legality here. If Iran has the right to enrich uranium under international law and the NPT, then that’s the end of the matter. The USA does not have the right to prevent this under any circumstances. Also, Iran is under no obligation to the so-called “International Community” to give them any information. There are 192 nations in the UN. 135 of the Non Aligned Movement nations support Iran’s nuclear program, a clear majority, let alone all the others that also support Iran. Around 160 of those 192 support Iran. So let’s not have any more crap about what the International Community demands, because it’s only a handful of nations, led by the USA that are bullying Iran on the basis of a pack of lies. By the way, this is a completely different situation than that of Neville Chamberlain. Iran doesn’t want to be appeased, it just wants to be left alone, not bullied by the USA, which is trying to deny Iran its legal rights. In fact what is really rankling the neocons in the White House is the fact that Iran would be happy to completely ignore the existence of the USA. Iran does not need the USA, doesn’t want to do business with the USA and considers the USA a warmongering pox on the planet.

He just obesses over and over about every country except ours . If it’s not Iraq he is obessing over it’s Iran . It’s like his brain is stuck on one channel and that’s it, he does’nt care about the outcome. That is scary , I actually loose sleep at night just thinking that one morning we are all going to wake up to martial law and our freadom as we know it will be erased .

Can anyone trust Iranian leader who intents to wipe out other nation from the map? What if they do have a nuclear technology? will they it to support their intent? most likely yes. Having or not having nuclear technology, they should be isolated anyway.

Posted by: Amagadon | December 6, 2007, 12:47 am 12:47 am

Many are forgetting, that Iran and their crazy President Ademanutjob said the Holocaust did not happen during WWII and he wants Israel blown off the map.
He acted as though he had a Nuclear weapon or was at the least hiding something. If it quakes and walks like a duck, then it must be a duck….in this case, Iran’s President is insane and cannot be trusted, no matter what a so-called report says.

Posted by: Scottyron | December 6, 2007, 12:55 am 12:55 am

I don’t think anyone disputes that Iran is not acting with all of the best intentions. Clearly they have hidden motives, but yet, that is politics. Perhaps their motives are sinister, or maybe they are not. I’m not going to debate that. However, the question is, with the world diplomacy that Bush has shown over two terms, is he really still the man that you want representing this nation and making such important and possibly world altering decisions? How many times must he be wrong about ‘staying the course’? How many chances will he be given when America felt it so important to pull Clinton into impeachment over his infidelity and dishonesty with the American public about cheating on his wife. A cheating President doesn’t scare me. Yea, Clinton had his problems. No President comes without some scandals or skeletons. Yet, a President that does hide material facts about spying on its citizens, shady internal affairs with it’s administration, and refuses to listen to his advisers, that is a President that I do have a problem with. Come on people, if this was your stock broker, would you seriously still let him invest your money after he told you to ‘stay the course’ for 7 years while watching the bottom fall out on your personal hard earned savings. It’s time for people to realize that Bush is brokering our future and he’s ignoring reality.

Whatever…when Iran uses WMD’s against Israel or an American interest, over the next 3 to 10 years, what will you say then? Right now, until Pres Bush leaves office and into the next Administation, Iran may not attack…but will they wait? Remember, the Iranian nutjob of a President has a huge ego. He was involved in the hostage crisis of the 1970′s and he can’t wait to blow up Israel. He will do anything to fight or kill Americans and also destroy Israel. Regardless, we have to be ready on the defense and ready to fight.

Posted by: The Real ? | December 6, 2007, 2:08 am 2:08 am

So, if that is truly the case, that we need to be ready to prevent Iran from using WMDs, and maybe we do, how is Bush the perfect candidate for solving this issue? I no longer believe that Bush can handle any situation in Iran or Iraq any better than he can handle domestic affairs or domestic disasters for that matter. Nothing about Bush has proven any resolve that he is on top of things or making any possible situation any better. I pay my President to run my country as its Chief Executive, with concern for fiscal policy, growth planning, and the sense to know where best to focus its energy and resources for the common good. And, if truly founded, to take decisive and immediate action in protecting the countries people from real and immediate threats. Yet, we bust our budget, waste our resources, and focus our efforts on unfounded claims and fear mongering from 7 years from this administration. If Bush sees a nuke with our name on it, I expect and back the full might of our forces, until that day, he needs to let those more intelligent than him run what is left of this country and stop making more enemies for us while busting our countries economy. Hopefully the next President can handle the job. Texas gun slinging and rhetoric will only take the US so far with nothing more than Bush’s hot air behind it. And if the President really knows about something we don’t, about real life nuclear weapons, not those imaginary kind that breed fear for his political agenda, then shame on him for not already using his executive command for sending in special forces to correct the problem. But yet, he appears to have done neither. So why is he in office? What protection is Bush providing, and how does anyone stand up for this man? Seriously, do all those Bush supporters really believe that Bush is such a success that they can’t even begin to consider perhaps this job could be better handled by another. Or does he really have you all believing he is the only one that can keep you safe at night?

Posted by: ajoke | December 6, 2007, 2:08 am 2:08 am

months ago, i was surprised and incredulous at this rhetoric. given the light of the NIE report, now i feel insulted, as i hope the american public now feels. in regard to how this administration feels that the public could give the slightest bit of credence to such rhetoric, let alone that it continues to seep out this administration’s collective mouth (despite said administration being aware of information to the contrary) is evidence that the administration is delusional and clearly doesn’t respect the intelligence of the voting public – such remarks ought to result in the public immediately crying foul. scarborough said it best on MSNBC, “the president is either lying to the american people or is stupid”,
personally, i find it noteworthy that this was not ONCE mentioned on foxnews; however, as an aside, i hope that they do, i’m highly interested in seeing how Fox attempts to twist this story into neutrality – i anticipate that perhaps this ridiculous spectacle is beyond their manipulation ability.

Obviously Bush has been sucking on China’s lead pipe to long. He should be locked away in a padded cell for the criminally insane not president of this great country. No wonder our young are acting out in violence, school shootings, mall shootings, gangs, etc., look at the example in Washington. The greed for power and money in the Bush administration is destroying this country. During the Bush reign of power the national debt has been driven to unimaginable proportions, the health care system is broken, the infrastructure on this country is in shambles, immigration is out of control, a new breed of homeless due mainly to all the good jobs being shipped to some foreign country, out of control living expenses and home foreclosures by predatory lenders, the middle class are now becoming the poor and the homeless, and what is Bush’s main concern, he wants another war!!

Are you not aware of the gaping holes in this report and the background of the writers like Thomas Fingar? Why is it that only the Weekly Standard, an openly partisan source, can report what this guy said just a few months ago that Iran WAS developing nuclear weapons? Why is this ignored?
It’s because your unprofessional and petty hatred for Bush comes before getting a story right. You people are pathetic losers and far worse liars than what you attempt to accuse Bush of being.

His second term was because war presidents are re-elected. I never voted for this moron and if anyone had taken the time to listen to his inability to form simple phrases he wouldn’t have received enough votes to stay on the ballot. Ajoke wrote here, “So, if that is truly the case, that we need to be ready to prevent Iran from using WMDs.” Who the hell appointed the USA to prevent anything happening on the other side of the globe? I don’t recall the USA being elected policeman of this planet. If Iran acquires WMD, it will be no different than Israel, India and Pakistan acquiring them. None of these nations, including Iran, are a threat to the USA, therefore the USA has no business preventing anything. I am so fed up with the USA rampaging throughout this planet, illegally interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign nations, illegally deposing elected governments and leaders, or even assassinating them, wor even worse illegally waging war on nations that are no threat to the USA, such as Iraq, using a pack of lies as a pretext. No wonder people are moved to fly aircraft into buildings in New York. I’m quite surprised that somebody hasn’t yet smuggled in a suitcase nuke and detonate it in Los Angeles. If the USA didn’t spend its time subverting the politics, internal affairs and economies of other nations, the USA would be a hell of a lot safer. The best thing that could happen is for the USA to merely go and mind its own business and that is, what happens within the confines of the continental USA, nowhere else.

Posted by: Ziggy | December 6, 2007, 8:58 am 8:58 am

This revelation only reinforces the fact that this idiot is pathologically stubborn in his thought processes, even in the face of overwhelming facts to the contrary. But for the fact that this information was brought to light, this would have been deja vous to the Iraq situation. When are the American people going to wake up and stop letting this administration allow their pre-conceived foreign policy dictate the facts, rather than letting facts dictate foreign policy?

Do we still buy into the incompetence-as-a-rule for the supposed failings of our intelligence gathering agencies? Given the billions (probably trillions) spent yearly on fantastic spy satellites, high tech surveilance, and ongoing global black ops, is it reasonable to assume we did’nt notice Iran had suspended their weapons program almost 5 years ago? I’m willing to bet we knew before some of their own people did– we ourselves may have even derailed it by hook or crook. So quibbling over what the August assessment meant to say, or what Bush thinks he thunk he saw is irrelevant. Nothing of importance happens anywhere without these jokers hearing about it first.

This is an impeachable offense (among a mountain of them he has committed). Why is the country just sitting back and letting this go by and acting like it’ just an inconvenient blip on the radar screen? Withholding crucial knowledge while misleading the public in a matter of huge import to national security is a giant felony at the very least. Bill Clinton almost gets impeached for saying “I did not have sex with that woman” and this chimpanzee starts bogus wars, kills over a million people, lies through his teeth on huge matters of public concern…and there’s nary a peep about impeachment. What forces could possibly be keeping this guy in office? This is another illustration of how out of control the U.S.Government has become. The United States Constitution was drafted to prevent any loose cannon’s from fomenting war without the support of Congress and “We the people”. To continue deceiving the people of the United States is an act that should not be allowed by any elected President. The mechanism to stop him has obviously been broken and must be fixed, quick, fast, and in a hurry. Checks and balances in our government are necessary for a reason, and this President has become the poster child for that cause. This President should not only not be awarded a “Presidential Library”, he should not even be provided a library card. God help us. Politics is a ugly profession and you are only as good as the people around you. Bush didn’t pick a very good staff, it doesn’t mean that Iran wants to play footsie with the US either. They would just as soon attack the US as Israel only if we were closer. Irans leaders expout hate with almost every message, remembemer that when they have enough uranimum enriched to make a dozen bombs. They already have a missile capable of going 2500 miles with the Russians help.

Was Bush’s most recent miscue more of a hassle to American’s paying higher gas/fuel oil prices or his buddies in big oil purchasing oil futures? WWIII has an effect, even if it is another Bush lie!

What I find amazing isn’t so much that Bush was “less than truthful” ;) about “what he knew and when he knew it” or even that the WH is now “admitting” this…but really that the Bush apologists are trying to spin this with the nonsense that because the NIE was “wrong” about WMDs in Iraq prior to the war. that we shouldn’t believe them now.
A) they weren’t necessarily “wrong”; there were definitely many in the NIE that had serious reservations as to the existence of WMDs, but the administration cherry-picked the intelligence
B) if someone misquoted or misused your findings the first time, wouldn’t you double your efforts to cover your butt the second time?
Just another example of “Georgie Porgy Pudd’n and Pie”…lie, lie, lie

Iran always hated the US but more so now then ever before. I also think they are dangerous with or without nukes. But the longer George keeps the war rolling the fatter him and his big oil pals get.

has anyone heard the fact that this braindead idiot has barrowed more moneythen all of our previos presidents combined this is for his little unjust war he lied us into with iraq and it looks like hes going to do it again with iran. i understand iran hates the u.s. and they are a danger but with this country lacking any credibility he should not start another war were we will be standing alone he wouldnt dare look at the saudis he has to much money tied up with them and his daddy is thick with them to but most of the 9/11 hijackers were saudis im waiting for the decision makers rateings to go below 20 it shouldnt take long it will be a good day when george and his ring of idoits are uot of washington for good

Posted by: CARL | December 6, 2007, 7:19 pm 7:19 pm

uh, the people who wrote this NIE are the same ones who wrote the one in 2005 that claimed iran had, was in pursuit of or developing nukes. which one is right? as a matter of fact, one of the “authors” was, in july of this year, still standing by his 2005 NIE. if the one in ’05 was wrong and this one right, why would you believe them if it took them FOUR years to figure it out?

hey ‘no to dems in 2008′, I did read pages 240 and 241. The 9/11 commission concluded that…
“We have found no evidence that Iran or Hezbollah was aware of the planning for what later became the 9/11 attack. At the time of their travel through Iran, al Qaeda operatives themselves were probably not aware of the specific details of their future operation”
Do you REALLY feel Iran’s ‘involvement’ in 9/11 is worth going to war for???? And by the way, we are NOT LIBS, DEMS, NEOCONS, REPUBS, ETC ETC ETC. We are ALL AMERICANS. Stop trying to divide the country, you and others who PREACH this HATE (like Rush) are doing FAR more HARM than the terrorists!

VNJD stated, “Perino stated Bush had been told in August that Iran suspended it’s covert nuclear weapons program. You mean the covert nuclear weapons program they said they didn’t have?” VNJJ, you are assuming quite erroneously that the NIE is correct. In actual fact, the NIE has been wrong on so many occasions or has deliberately spun whatever information it might have had to appease Bush and Cheney. NOWHERE has it been found that Iran had a nuclear weapons program prior to 2003. NOBODY in Iran has claimed this either. The IAEA has NEVER suggested that Iran had a nuclear weapons program, then or now. In regard to Iran, the NIE is a load of unbelievable crap and that’s all there is to it. The simple truth is that Bush and Cheney have suddenly realised that if they order the bombing of Iran, this will bring repercussions to the USA from which it will never recover. Iran is not the pushover that Iraq was and I’d hazard a guess that some Iranians have whispered in Bush’s ear that an attack on Iran might result in some millions of Americans dying in the USA, not just overseas. So all of a sudden, out pops the NIE that gives Bush an escape clause, although with some embarrassment. as for putting our trust in Ahmadinejad and Rafsanjani, nobody is suggesting this. What I suggest is that the USA merely keeps its nose out of the affairs of other nations, including Iran. It is obvious that Iran resents the constant interference in its domestic affairs by the USA, Iran does not want to do business with the USA either, but the USA, self-appointed and unelected policeman of the planet continues to persecute Iran and other nations. The moment the USA stops this meddling and bullying, the world will be a far safer place for all.

I am sick and tired of hearing that Bush Lied about Iraq. Here is a quick lesson about the US constitution. We have in this country something called the War Powers Act: It says that a President can not start a war without congressional aproval. Bush went to congress and made his pitch for military action against Iraq and used 20 pieces of Intelligence to support his case. Congress then had the RESPONSIBILITY to review the reasons (intel reports) he cited and vote yes or no. They voted YES after looking at the same intelligence he looked at. So exactly how did he lie???? Or are you libs trying to say that congress voted without checking the facts… If so, then who is the real idiot? Clinton caused the mess we are in by not doing anything about Bin Laden when he had the chance. HE cost us 3000 US lives in one day. Not to mention those lost in our embassies, our marine barracks, and the USS Cole. What if we had not engaged IRAQ? And when we chased Al Quaida out of Pakistan, what if they had went to Iraq where there actually were WMDs? What if the next attack was bio, or chemical? Better safe than sorry. Diplomacy will not work if your adversaries will accept nothing other than your death. This war on terror is real…if you can’t accept that, it may cost you your life.

antihillaryarkie wrote, “Clinton caused the mess we are in by not doing anything about Bin Laden when he had the chance. HE cost us 3000 US lives in one day.” Actually the USA financed and armed the Afghan mujaheddin and this is yet another example where the USA interfered in the affairs of another nation and eventually got bitten. If the USA had not stuck its nose into Afghanistan when the USSR were involved, then Bin Laden might have gotten wiped out by them. What if we had not engaged IRAQ? antihillaryarkie also asked,”What if we had not engaged IRAQ?” I can answer this. Iraq was never a threat to the USA and if anybody really wants to know the reason why the USA embarked on this highly illegal war, just read Krassimir Petrov’s article called ‘The Iranian Oil Bourse” and then you’ll know why. Look it up on the Internet. Incidentally, al Qaeda would have NEVER gone to Iraq while Saddam Hussein was in charge, as he was a sworn enemy of Bin Laden and would have killed him on sight. This was what amazed me most of all – Bush’s allegations that Saddam and Bin Laden were in bed together, something so nonsensical that I can’t believe that anybody bought it. How stupid can people be? Saddam Hussein, butcher that he was, was no business of the USA and now the USA is paying the penalty for its illegal interference. But you really need to stop fantasising and just research the facts, not believe in concocted propaganda and spin from the White House and the neocons. They’ve been lying to your people for decades and they are still doing it and you still keep them in power. Suckers!

“Clinton caused 3000 lives”, give it up you bunch of liars. Bush was at the helm plenty of time to do something, records show he was NOT WORKING 42% of the time leading into 9-11. If he had been doing his JOB, instead of playing patta-cake in daycare, with his cabinet, 9-11 would not have happened. Lying about a lie, to cover-up another lie, to diffuse another lie, is the way this administration avoids impeachment hearings.

This is really unbelievable! I can’t believe the gaul of saber rattling after the fiasco in Iraq.

Good grief, can’t we please just get together and decide this bozo needs to go now!!?? I think at this point he has passed from the worst president of my lifetime, to the worst ever. I’m not sure our country can really ever recover.
How could enough people in this country have been so uninformed and foolish as to have re-elected this man, after his performance of the first four years? Those who did might want to reassess their information sources, and improve their understanding of our government, the players, and world events before casting another vote. An uninformed vote is a dangerous thing and this is one prime example.

antihillaryarkie writes: “Congress then had the RESPONSIBILITY to review the reasons (intel reports) he cited and vote yes or no. They voted YES after looking at the same intelligence he looked at. So exactly how did he lie???” Lie by omission. They reviewed only the reports he wanted them to review. The reports he used to sell his war. Refer to the Plame affair if you think I’m making this up.

I can’t believe that there are people that actual spin these occurrences right along with the rest of the Republicans. Oh why do you think they stopped; “It’s the Bush Administration” says the average Bushy! Your a sheep!
I’m a Republican and proud of it, I however am not Proud of My President. If you put this guy in a room with a detective (Name your agency) they would tear him apart with all the lies that he spouts in an attempt to hide his true intention. Don’t you see that’s all you get with this guy; half truths and half the story because the rest is “National Security” or “States secrets”. These people are so underhanded that they defy the judiciary committee in there attempt to find out what went on during the Prosecutor firings. The average Bushy thinks “Oh its a political witch hut” NO you incredibly stupid people , That entire act constitutes a slow methodical take over of the united states prosecutors , A coup attempt or take over of a region of the government to ensure local prosecutions(Get the Democrats) and rulings would go their way! I for one do not trust the Iranians but I can see what these characters were building up to! Here’s some food for thought. It’s a definite possibility that one day unless our habits and resources change, we will have to aggressively take over an Oil Producing nation or territory to ensure the survival of our way of life and maybe the very existence of the United States of America! Scary isn’t it!These Guys are so deeply involved with the commodities (Weapons and oil) that this
May be their way of securing their own families legacy’s.

IMPEACH THEM!!!! What if Hitler and his band of psychopaths, freaks, monsters and madmen, with their cruel methods and the worst of intentions for other human beings, had been allowed to go on for another year? The suffering of many simply would not have happened. It is time to stop them Bush is insane, and Cheney is a madman!

Don’t just write on this comments board, tell your representatives to support H. Res. 333, Cheney first, then the rest of them.
And to the true believing Bushies…WOW, with all that has
happened, you still believe. Don’t let
warmongering, warprofittering, incompetence, ignoring the constitution and the rule of law get in your way.
“Go bush…” you don’t sound stupid at
all, still believing. Maybe you can visit your noble leader in jail.
