We should “wait and see” how the science of Global Warming evolves a bit – don’t jump at the first declaration of “the sky is falling” – if we had jumped in the 1970′s we would have been deliberately dumping CO2 to offset and ice age. The jury is still out.
Sunspots are easily linked to previous warming periods in history but aren’t considered a factor because the UN (a political body) has determined that CO2 is the culprit.
Finally, enjoy the upcoming ‘mini ice age’ for the next 10 years that NASA has recently predicted… I’m buying a good jacket.

The Democrats love to tax the rich and redistribute it to the poor to buy their votes. What we saw in Denver was just another Liberal game to take from the rich (US, Canada, and Europe) and give to the poor (China, India, etc.) But in this case, we get NOTHING in return.

Did anyone read the quoted text from his speech above? Because I think Bill makes it pretty clear that he is not suggesting slowing down the economy. He was simply stating the obvious. Rich countries slowing their economies could help the environment. But that wouldn’t stop poorer countries from trying to jump start their own economies. So the slowing economy strategy is NOT Plausible. He then goes on to discuss creating new jobs in green technology fields, thus fueling the economy AND helping the environment. I’m not saying it was an eloquent speech, but don’t misquote the guy.

God forbid that us Americans should consider anything other than our own economic welfare — even at the cost of our own future. The comments here indicate terminal myopia to a laughable extreme. BTW: Bill never drove our economy into the ground — that I believe is some dude named Bush.

At a time when severe winter storms were hitting California and Baghdad had snow for the first time in memory and most of the midwest was freezing, Al Gore resurfaced to say that global warming was much worse than we could ever have imagined. When people finally wake up to the fact that we’re being lied to, all this carbon trading bull will die out, and those who wanted to get in on this $150 trillion industry will have to find another way to make money. If all the people advocating global warming actually believed it, they wouldn’t be doing what they’re doing. In other words, they would be practicing what they preach.

In the real carbon offset business, he looks forward to being paid for directing other carbon consumers to invest in carbon neutral projects through Generation Investment Management which Gore is the founder and chairman. So Gore will profit from mankind’s misery. I’m glad to see he finally has developed the capitalist instinct (like his daddy did with Occidental Petroleum and Armand Hammer). When Gore personally is using carbon, as when he flies in a carbon belching Gulfstream jet, one of his companies would pay some other guy not to fly or plant a tree or do something to offset Gore’s carbon belching so that Gore can feel elated about himself and live as he wants.

I can’t believe this headline is still posted here. It is terrible reporting. Bill did NOT suggest slowing the economy. He said it as a strawman alternative and then KNOCKED IT DOWN in favor of transitioning to a sustainable, greener economy which would gain jobs.

The only fair reading of what Bill Clinton actually said in full is that slowing down the economy is NOT the right way to reduce global warming. He says we COULD slow down the economy but that won’t work. Instead: “The only way we can do this is if we get back in the world’s fight against global warming and prove it is good economics that we will create more jobs to build a sustainable economy that saves the planet for our children and grandchildren.”

A great greening of the Earth is happening as Mankind releases million year old plant and plankton fertilizer from its underground reservoirs. Wheat, especially, loves more CO2, but the vast majority of trees like it even more.
Since the very minor *greenhouse* effect of C02 is tiny and *logarithmic*, meaning another doubling has much less effect than an initial one. CO2, being much less of a greenhouse gas than water vapor or methane, another doubling may lead to a degree increase in a century or two (or it may not, depending on how well you believe the weatherman’s latest predictions) but since plant fertilization is linear with CO2, if we double CO2 again, we double the *greening* effect. There is a lag in time before a tiny tree becomes a huge CO2 hog, but over time, this greening effect on land and sea will turn the Earth into a living paradise as plant and animal biodiversity and biomass have time bask in a fertilized atmosphere, tended to by rich countries, it being only rich countries who can afford such luxuries as studying endangered species, frog killing fungi, honey bee population crashes, epidemics, or launch satellites to study real problems like the ozone hole.
Isn’t it just an odd coincidence though that the *one* unproven (only exists in simple models of poorly understood chaotic feedback systems) “crisis” that liberals latch onto is one in which rich nations must atone for their sins of success and stop being envied at all (so those poor envious desert dwellers will stop flying airplanes into our financial and military centers)?

If Bill is so hot about global warming (pun intended), why was he so cowardly about Kyoto? Remember, the Senate had voted unanimously to vote down any agreement that would be detrimental to our economy, and when Kyoto was ready to be ratified, Clinton never even submitted it to the Senate (because he knew he would lose). So he just sat on the sidelines for a few years, and then started criticizing the current administration for not doing anything about Kyoto (of course, those countries who have tried to implement Kyoto have failed miserably, and the U.S., without Kyoto, has done a better job of reducing greenhouse gases than any of them).
So this is just another Clintonian fairy tale, designed to woo gullible voters but not designed to actually do anything. The fact that there are some number of people who actually believe the garbage that comes from this political family is both scary and disheartening; obviously the complaints about the education system in this country are accurate.

This was a really dumb comment by Bill Clinton. There are a million different ways to express the sentiment that reducing industrial production would aid the fight against global warming. “Slowing down our economy” is perhaps the dumbest possible way. As for Clinton’s statement about slowing down the economy – he’s losing it. However, global warming is a real phenomenon. It is all about balance and even if CO2 admissions weren’t to blame for global warming, we don’t know what the real effect will be with the complete imbalance in the system as it stands today. As we are continuing to emit more CO2 into the atmosphere, we are cutting down the trees which absorb CO2 and convert it into breathable oxygen which we need to live. Every human disease is caused by an imbalance in normal physiology. Drugs work by reinstating the balance. It is no different with the environment. We need to cut our CO2 emissions and stop cutting down trees in mass quantities – both of which the Kyoto protocol calls for.

I think that many of the people are taking this totally the wrong way. If one were to think about momentum and inertia and apply it to economics then it would be pretty obvious to say that a change in a new direction would slow the economy in respect to current methods of energy consumption, such as home heating, automobiles, etc., and profit from that consumption. To move in that new direction, however, jobs will be created for research, design, and manufacturing. Just like when someone was needed to build our first automobiles…I’m sure it took a larger work force that what it took to make horse carriages…It took more people to make light bulbs than candles…His statement makes sense if one looks further ahead than the tip of their nose….but that is the sole thought process of conservative america…Going with the flow is much easier than changing direction.

Plus, the carbon emissions from converting trees into paper and other natural products are miniscule when compared to the emissions from the manufacture of synthetic plastics and other man-made substitutes for natural products. If you want to really cut CO2 levels, cut down all the old trees, plant new ones, and stop your whining, morons.

FWIW–Anyone interested in a little empirical info on question of relation of economy to CO2? We had a little thing called the world wide depression back in the 1930′s with a economies declining in the range of 30 percent. The CO2 in the atmosphere was gradually rising before, during and after this massive economic catastrophe. Lost my sources on the CO2 but they were reputable. Human activity is simply not the driving force for either atmospheric CO2 or any other macro-environmental condition. The news cyle, however, was probably devoted to non-existent declines in polar bear populations. Go figure.

I’m from Australia, where this global warming debate is also becoming mainstream. The problem is not our large economies slowing down, but those of emerging economies ramping up.
Consider this.
We, in those large Western Economies take the things that they do not have for granted, things like electric power. The biggest producer of greenhouse gases on the planet are coal fired electric power generators to supply electric power to the masses. Emerging economies like those two largest on the Planet, China and India are not currently subject to the Kyoto Protocol, because they are emerging. In the main, vast millions of people do not have access to electric power at all. So, as their economies become stronger, more people have access to electric power. In China alone, they will never catch up to the percentage of people that have electricity that we already have. China alone is opening coal fired power stations (because these are the cheapest to construct) at the rate of, and I’ll capitalise it for effect, ONE PER DAY, and they’ll be doing this for the next ten to fifteen years, so that could be five thousand and more in the long term, and this is just China, and still it won’t reach half the people there. India would be the same.

This post by Jake Tapper is clearly a total misrepresentation of what Bill Clinton said. He was saying the opposite of what the headline here says.

We dare not slow down the economy. Our projected spending liability for Social Security and Medicare over the next 25 years is $40.8 TRILLION (tax) dollars. We can’t tax our way out, borrow our way out, nor can we rely on our GDP to increase in double digets each year to pay it down.
We are going to need some radical bipartisan reform, which will be painful for many, if we want to survive.
Funny none of the candidates for President are addressing this issue, which may very well be the defining issue of the times.

Yes, sometimes human beings who are not 100% selfish have to sacrifice a little comfort so that our environment is not destroyed by burning temperatures. However, it is clear from reading the comments that were already posted that most americans had rather drive their hummers, run their heaters, and continue to fill up the local landfill than to allow their grandchildren to drink water in the next forty years. Basically, Bill just rambles. It’s a very fuzzy piece. Or, just maybe he realized what he said about slowing down the economy was pretty stupid because NO country will do that (except maybe the US if Hill gets in – (HEAVEN FORBID!!!) All the same, if you look at what he said closely, it is clear that he sees slowing the economy as a short-term solution because he says we need to “prove it is good economics” to do so – to “go green”, to shut down industrialization, etc. But Bill is quite the dancer and he is also accomplished at uttering things that are so convoluted that no one can figure out for sure what he means. Then later he can say, as usual, “What I meant was . . .”

Who can trust Bill Clinton? Who can prove without a doubt that “global warming” real and that it is due to greenhouse gases emitted by human activity? A number of reputable scientists disagree, but they are summarily dismissed as lunatics. The hype of “global warming” is political, not scientific. It has happened before, and there is some evidence to show that it is due at least in part to volcanic activity deep within the earth. We need to keep our economy growing. Roughly, only 25% of the earth’s surface consists of land mass. About half of the land mass is uninhabitable, so only 50% of the land mass is inhabited by people. (25% X 50% = 12.5%) Only 12.5% of the planet is inhabited.
Most of those people do not live in industrialized areas. In fact, half the world’s population lives on less than 3% of the “potentially habitable“ land area. (0.125 x 0.03 = 0.00375 or 0.4%) and maybe half of the people on that tiny percentage of land actually live in industrialized areas. (0.4% X .5 = 0.02%) When you finish doing the math, you find that man-made Global Warming proponents are trying to tell us that the activities of the people living on only 0.002% (that’s 2 tenths of 1%) of the earth’s surface are responsible for altering the climate/weather/temperature of the other 99.8% of the earth, 75% of which is oceans which have an immensely huge impact on our weather. UNNN-believable!!

I can’t make heads or tails of what Bill actually meant. If we “go green”, it will create millions of jobs? Does he mean government environmental scamming jobs? “Million and millions and millions” of them? Who’s arguing about efficiency? The debate is real energy vs. fantasy energy. How would bio-fuels reduce CO2? How does Hillary plan to pay for her worthless windmills? Is it “good economics” to “take their profits” (Hillary’s words) from companies that provide the REAL power of our economies? People make money by using energy. You reduce energy, you reduce wealth. A car that gets 100 mpg would be lovely, and we wouldn’t need Billary to convince us of that. I work in the healthcare field and most of my business comes from the state medicaid program. The people in other countries are stunned that our government actually pays for doctors, hospitals, food, medicine, medical equip., etc. Why? You think carbon dioxide is a problem? Try living without it. All those plants on the earth we are destroying with it just happen to breathe it and use it to produce oxygen. “Yes, but too much is bad” Ever see how much stuff grows on the sides of the roads and highways? Those plants aren’t dying. Think ethanol helps? Did you know that it is much less efficient than gasoline? It makes your engine burn hotter and less fuel efficient. The EPA gives “MPG Credits” to the auto makers cars that can burn it so they can falsely claim it gets a higher mpg than otherwise.
Your heart may be in the right place, but if it isn’t backed up by your brain then what body part are you using to make decisions?

Reputable science is showing that the between 96 and 100% of change in “global temperature is natural and not manmade. That means in the worst case if the earth temperature was to change 5° over the next 10 years we could attribute .2° to humans. Not enough to make noticeable difference in the sea level or anything else. For this the Clintons what to impoverish America? And besides since 1998 (2nd warmest year on record, 1934 was the warmest) the mean global temperature has been on a steady decline. Our records only go back to 1880, nothing in the world history. Prior to that the 11th century was far warmer then it is now or for the predicted future, even by the most pessimistic global warming model. In that century there were far less Atlantic storms, and far less plagues and famines then there were in the centuries before and after. Scotland was an agriculture center, and in England they made wine, too cold to do that now. So what is the problem if the Earth gets warmer? However, it is not, solar energy patterns (there is no human influence there) is indicating we are heading for a much colder period that could last for the next 40 to 60 years.
It should be noted that when a natural disaster strikes it is those depended on government who are the hardest hit. This is true for anyone, rich or poor and anywhere in the world. So what Bill Clinton is proposing is the perfect liberal solution to a non-problem, reduce prosperity, and increase dependency on government.

It is about the right winged nutter media taking a stament that Bill made and twisting it around to sound like he wants to stop the ecconomy or stop the United States from working or what ever the heck they are trying to say. The fact is Global warming may be happening it may not be happening but how about this…..Suppose that global warming is in fact not a real threat what is the harm in doing something about what many perceive to be a major problem in most large cities of the world Carbon Monoxide build (see Bejing. Now lets assume that there is really nothing to worry about with smog or pollution except it is reall dirty and makes it difficult to breath and makes everything dirty and so on…Now I ask what is the problem with trying to make that filth disappear? The air will be cleaner, in all probability there will be new jobs created because of the technology that will be created becasue of the advancement in science (See US spce program circa 1960′s). I also call this the automobile safety belt syndrome. When it was shown that safety belts saved lives did the Auto Industry go GOLLY WE REALLY NEED TO PUT THIS IN ALL CARS….NO! it had to be mandated byt OH MY GOD THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!!!!!AHHHHHHHHHHH! Now I am not sure but wouldn’t it be nice to know how many people are alive today because they had to wear a seat belt! There is always resistence to inovation and advnacement for the human race (see Ludites) and those who are getting in the way of realizing that we can do soemthing about the environment we live in weather it has anything to do with Global warming or not is of little cosnsequence. What matters is quality of life and for me I want clean air and water for starters!

Mr. Tapper, I assume you physically typed this essay yourself, and therefore, I assume you actually took the time to press the key for the two single-quote marks that surround the sentence about slowing down our economy. As a trained journalist and writer, you presumably did so because you knew those words represented a nested quote inside another quote, indicating that the words were not Clinton’s own, but someone else’s.
Therefore, it is obvious from this punctational giveaway that you knew Clinton was using the words about slowing our economy down as a hypothetical quote or idea expressed by a hypothetical someone else.
The lie that there is some question about what Clinton meant is entirely exposed by this, your own usage of punctuation which clearly signals that at the time you wrote this article, you knew that he was not saying those words as an expression of his own beliefs, but to represent someone else’s.
Here is the relevant portion. I draw your attention to the single quotes surrounding that sentence within Clinton’s full quote:

Changing your headline to the question “What did he mean?” does not undo the essential dishonesty of this entire article. There WAS no question of what he meant until you decided to create one.
And by your use of the single quotes surrounding those words, you reveal that you knew this all along.

He said that he imagined that it might be possible for industrialized nations to say that, but they’d be wrong to do so, because it wouldn’t be realistic and wouldn’t solve the problem.
So, now, because of this idiotic and intentionally obtuse mischaracterization, the bloggosphere is full of people quoting it as fact. Much like the never-said “I invented the Internet” quote from 2000.

Here we are sending almost all of our manufacturing jobs to China. We buy these products & help their economy. Soon we will not be able to afford even the chinese products because we will have lost so many jobs. How many products do the Chincese buy from the US, that are actually manufactured in the US? The economy is in turmoil and all Americans see is the wealthy getting the bailout. I see a way of fixing it and it is very easy, and will not just help a few people but everyone in the United States. We have set aside $700,000,000,000 for the bailout correct. Set aside approximately $330,000,000.00 of the $700,000,000,000.00 which would leave $699,670,000.000.00 left to feed the buzzards of Freddie, Fannie, AIG and so on. Take the $330,000,000.00 and send it to every man and woman legally in the United States and have not committed a felony, right at a million dollars a person even the children. Make the parents the executor of the children’s money and make it mandatory that all be invested for their futures once eighteen they are then able to touch the money but only if they attend a higher education program, if not they have to wait till age 24 when they may have some kind of career going at that time. Takes care of federal or personal educational loans, covered. The adults have to pay taxes first on the million at the 32% rate, which would automatically send approx. $ 69,300,000.00 back to the federal Gov. Then they can use the money to pay off mortgages, which will help these failing banks, then pay off high interest rate credit card loans, then buy some kind of alternative fuel type car or at least a fuel efficient car. This would help with the environment and help with homeland security. Not only would it do those things but it would make sure all Americans would have money for medical insurance and should be made mandatory for the use of the money, this would help our failing hospitals from non payment of services rendered. The big thing would be the solution for Social Security for all ages. The amount of taxes paid on capital gains could go straight back into Social Security for the future generations.
