Clinton Misses MLK March in South Carolina

ABC News’ Kate Snow and Sunlen Miller Report: Senator Barack Obama just marched through the streets of Columbia, S.C. with hundreds of people around him.

It was quite a scene – a crush of media, people screaming his name, kids and adults straining to see the Democratic senator from Illinois, shouts of "fired up! Ready to go!"

One sign near the front of the march read "no Clinton dynasty".

Senator Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., had been scheduled to march as well but, much to the delight of Obama staffers, her flight was delayed. She missed the march.

She is scheduled to speak at an event honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. now underway at the Capitol, as is Obama and Senator John Edwards, D-N.C.

But the visual that will be all over local newscasts on this MLK holiday, is one of a joyous Obama, smiling, marching with throngs of supporters – and not a Clinton in sight.

OBAMA, OBAM, OBAMA, OBAMA, OBAMA, can’t get enough of this guy all over the news. The media can;t stop giving us a 24/7 dosis of Obama. He is their man!
To much biased coverage in his favor and not real coverage on issues, all the media do is covering personal attacks and innuendos form the other campaigns adn leave Obama untouched!, they know that int the sympathy contest Obama (Mr Smiley)have more chances to win that in discussion of the real issues.

Yes she does & yes she has my vote!!!!!!!!!

I to believe that ABC Good Morning America is biased to Obama. I thought
in the enws if one candidate was show it was just a stated rule that someting on the others candidates were shown as well
ABC tends to make sure that Senator
Clinton is show- but in a bad way.
I thought today the clip and piece of LIwinsky was in bad taste and it proves what I have been sayinh
Where is the justice in the reporting from Abc gOOD mORNING aMERICA.
Normally I enjoy this program but have begun to look to other morning news shows because the report of election 2008 is so biased

I lothe Obama. His supporters are racist. I’ll be voting for Hillary.

What do you mean “her (Clinton) flight was delayed”??? Are we really expected to believe she flys “commercial”??

Posted by: jok | January 21, 2008, 11:36 am 11:36 am

This whole thing is tiring. Both candidates are good people. Both care about the country and are patriots. Both are democrats. Whoever is the nominee is going to get my vote. I just wish we could turn the page on this stuff. Maybe I will just vote for Edwards and that will be that.

Excuse me, private aviation is no different than commercial. If she uses a major aiport rather than private she is prone to the same delays everyone else is. You raise and excellant point Halli Casser-Jayne, how sad people refuse to accept the blindly obvious fact that racism and feminism are still very much alive in this Country. Why do you think their called hate crimes?

Posted by: BJ | January 21, 2008, 11:47 am 11:47 am

I’d love for the people who claim they’re “tired of” Obama and that his “supporters are racists” offer one shred of proof to substantiate their claims. You’re telling me Obama gets more coverage than Hillary Clinton? Calling him names (Mr. Smiley?) and launching unsubstantiated smears against his supporters isn’t really how we conduct ourselves in a serious democracy, is it? (I know it is; I’m not naive. However, I’m hoping that others recognize sentiments like theirs for what they are.)

I am offended that someone would call me (a middle aged Anglo female) or anyone else a racist because I (we) support Obama.
Shame on you.

So is it a requirment to attend a parade of a black man. When was the last time Obama attended a parade of President George Washington.

Posted by: Martin laughin | January 21, 2008, 12:53 pm 12:53 pm

The media is, in fact, obsessed with Hillary, in an unhealthy way. When she wins, the story is, “She won!”, and when Obama wins, the story is, “She lost! Can she come back? All Hillary, all the time!” It has been nearly impossible for Obama to break through the Hillary narrative that has gripped the media since she announced. So I guess I’m glad her plane was delayed.
She’s my Senator, and I couldn’t be less happy about it.

Posted by: tired of bad grammar | January 21, 2008, 12:54 pm 12:54 pm

BTW, did anyone else watch Colin Powell on the View this morning. In discussing the history of Civil Rights, he stated almost word for word the same thing Hillary said about MLK and Johnson. Jump on him.

Posted by: Curious | January 21, 2008, 12:58 pm 12:58 pm

To those who say that Obama supporters are racist, I agree with Kate, shame on you.
I support Obama, I am a black male, but I do not support him because of his colour or his gender, I would never have supported a candidate like Jesse Jackson, or Al. Sharpton.
I like Obama because I feel that he is inclusive, regardless of colour. People also forget that he is as much white as he is black. I like his message, I feel that it is time for change, and he inspires me. I am tired of the Clinton -Bush dynasty, and especially of the Clintons. I think that if Hillary Clinton is the nominee, I am likely to vote for a republican, if Mcain is the nominee.
So, rather than simple name-calling, Briana, perhaps you should think a little bit. Besides even if you think that Obama supporters are racist, which I do not believe that they are, does that make Obama racist?

Posted by: Destempel | January 21, 2008, 1:03 pm 1:03 pm

Ahem… when’s the last time ANY of us attended a George Washington parade? What a ridiculous parallel to attempt to make.
And I’m sure everyone will love how you just relegated the status of MLK to a mere “black man.” If that’s all you see and know about him, you’re telling us a lot more about yourself than you may have intended.
It’s a bummer for Clinton’s campaign that her flight was delayed, plain & simple. One of those items of chance that happens, and now Obama will gets tons of media play because he was there sans Clinton. It happens.

Guess what Bri, more people hate her than him. And people hate her with a reason and with passion. Even if she wins the nomination, she will not win the general.

Oh and he will make up for his loss of votes but we all know she will not. Who do you think will put her over the top? That is the problem with Clinton supporters, ignorance and inability to think in strategic terms.

I am appalled by the shameful and blatant bias of the media with regard to Sen. Obama’s campaign. The press has descended upon Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton like a pack of wolves. The media is primarily responsible for promoting the “race card” in this primary. As an example, during the Nevada debates it was revealed that Obama supporters and the press helped forward Clinton’s accurate remarks concerning Martin Luther King, Jr. and Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson as insensitive and inaccurate. The press has given Obama a free ride and interestingly, issues of gender in this political race have been relegated to the back of the bus. Women will continue to be and always have been at the bottom of the heap; one only has to look around the world especially in parts of Africa and in the Mid-East. Women continue to be physically threatened (beaten and raped) and denied civil rights (yet the U.S. continues to cast a blind eye and do business with these countries as usual). This political race would be quite different if Obama was an African American female and Clinton was a white male. I am amused by Obama’s camp bemoaning the activity and involvement of former Pres. Bill Clinton; as Sen. Clinton’s spouse, I can understand his frustration. His remarks have also been tweaked and twisted. As an African American male, Sen. Obama is exploiting the late MLK’s wonderful legacy (even though he may deny this and perhaps it can’t be helped) and let us not forget Oprah. We all need to keep our eye on the prize, and that prize is the most capable candidate who is Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. It will be against great odds if Clinton wins this election.

With Bill so aggressively campaigning I have come to this realization: Bill is running for a third term by proxy. I voted for Bill over the elder Bush (George HW), but I must now admit that George is a man of far superior character than Bill ever was or will be. Frankly, I don’t want him anywhere near the White House again. 8 years was enough.

People are tired of dirty politics. That is why Obama is supported by so many, including head of the senate judiciary Leahy as well as many others. These are critical objective thinking people. So to all of the clinton supporters. Are the high ranking senators duped too. I dont think so. Anyone actually paying attention will reject the Clintons. Their way of winning elections is the old dirty politics. America is ready to move forward not backward.

Michelle Obama campiagned for Obama in Nevada but they BOOed her off the stage when she spoke in EBONICs and could not even pronounce the name of NEVADA.

Posted by: RadarLOVE | January 21, 2008, 1:48 pm 1:48 pm

And you point is what Mary. They didn’t like what Jesus Christ had to say in the bible days either, and it doesn’t decrease anything he said. It all only proved to be true. Take a shot at Obama’s wife it what you would stoop too, it won’t work. She’s strong, she can handle it. LOL

The fact is that Obama has stayed above the fray. Maybe the press would give the Clinton’s a bit more positive coverage if they has something positive to talk about. The Clinton’s are running the dirtiest of political campaigns. There is no-way they will ever get my vote after running this type of campaign. This good cop bad cop scheme deployed by Hill and Billy Clinton is truly abhorrent.

Posted by: bross2 | January 21, 2008, 2:19 pm 2:19 pm

Bush the first was VP, 1981-1989, and, as former CIA director, he was more involved in the Reagan administration than Hillary was in Bill’s. Bush the first was President from 1989-1993. Hill and Bill were co-presidents, to hear her brag about it, from 1993-2001. Bush the second wil have been president from 2001-2009. If Clinton wins two terms, that will mean BUSH-CLINTON-BUSH-CLINTON FOR 36 YEARS!!!! 36 YEARS is too much!!! We cannot fix this country with a re-hash, a re-run, a has-been!!!! That is what the sign ‘No Clinton Dynasty’ at the King march means. BTW, LBJ refused to support voting rights provisions of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Dr. King kept up public pressure, focused attention on bloody voter suppression in the South, and forced LBJ to support the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Hillary was a Goldwater Girl at the time. Her demeaning and innacurate comments about MLK were just about playing the race card against Obama. It’s a good thing her ‘plane was delayed’. She doesn’t belong in a King march.

God! So many Clinton campaign staff on here workin’ it. I am in Nevada. I got seven calls last week all purporting to be from the Obama campaign telling my my caucus address. Five of them were wrong. Only when I called the Obama campaign office directly myself did I get an accurate answer. Also, the two calls I got from Obama headquarters staff correctly identified my caucus location. There was LOTS OF FUNNY BUSINESS last week. I mean, I was being told to go to locations over ten miles from me. . . . and to “be there by 11:30 AM.” Point: you had to be there by 11:00 AM.

Also, to BJ:
I’m not sure you intended it this way, but drawing a parallel between “racism” and “feminism” is pretty ignorant. “Racism” is unjust discrimination on the basis of race; “feminism” is a cause on behalf of gender equality (or against unjust discrimination on the basis of sex/gender).
More generally, the descent of political discourse to accusations of racism and sexism, whichever way they cut, will benefit no one except the right wing of the spectrum. Why is it that the left constantly self-implodes through petty divisiveness?

Posted by: Chris | January 21, 2008, 3:35 pm 3:35 pm

Wow….so many people on these blogs are so racist and ignorant, no wonder America is becoming a joke. If you vote for Obama you must be racist??? If you vote against Hillary you must be sexist??? Look at the character of the people involved. If Hillary was male or a green alien with hermaphrodite, asexual abilities, she would STILL be loathed by 52% of the population. If Obama was Jesse Jackson or a crack pot Alan Keyes there would be cause for alarm. The only thing that provokes these stupid comments is that the people making them are emotionally attached to the Clintons and very slow mentally. No wonder Obama appeals to educated people that didn’t grow up in an overtly racist US. Now we’re just kindler and gentler about our prejudice. HEY PEOPLE…..can someone compare Hillary to former TX Gov. Ann Richards????? Now that was a female leader worthy of respect.
Being female isn’t Hillary’s problem, its being a cold, calculating, power-mad opportunist masquerading as a bleeding heart while Bill cleans up for her that has people willing to vote for McCain or Bloomberg if she becomes the Dem nominee. For example…….NONE of these candidates, except for Obama and Bill Clinton himself, would be caught near a predominately black church if they weren’t campaigning. Let alone a “march”. And she definitely wouldn’t have that accent.

Dear Chris – How quickly you dismiss gender in this contest for leadership. Thank you for adding credence to my post.

Posted by: Diane Fadeley | January 21, 2008, 4:22 pm 4:22 pm

what I am sure about is that when someone compares feminism to racism, they misunderstand the substance, history and objectives of feminism. As someone who clearly cares about the politics of gender, I would think you’d agree on this point.
Also, I think you’ve misinterpreted my response to your original post, which was not aiming to put you on the defensive. Generally, I think the misogyny underlying much of the anti-Hillary sentiment is just as reprehensible as the racism behind the Barack-is-a-radical-muslim smears. And I think you are correct that gender has taken a backseat to race in the media coverage–my point is that, for better or for worse, the Clintons want it like this. Now, the following may be a lamentable fact about US politics, but there is a reason both Barack and Hillary have worked to neutralize the questions of race and gender, respectively, in order to broaden their appeal (except in cases where being African-American or being female works to their immediate advantage). Hillary wants to be pigeonholed as the ‘female candidate’ as little as Barack wants to be perceived as the ‘black candidate.’ So when debating this whole ‘race card’ issue, it’s important to consider who it benefits and who’s behind it–and in both cases, it’s more likely to be Clinton than Obama.

The Clintons are dishonest. Period
They do not deserve to be rulers forever. They are divisive, hateful and angry .
Boot them out.

Cannot understand why this country is so engross in Race. The the eys of God, there is nothing but one people. COlor of the skin may be different but in truth be bleed the same, eat the same, shelter the same. The basic necessities of life is waht all people in the universe try to achieve. to this effect, society and its norm has made this distinction of color (black and white, yellow and green, pink and blue). Honestly, if we all sit down and distinguish the real color we all find that white is white and black is black and now human being is white as a sheet of paper and black darkness.
America, it is time to quite living in the past – isolate this ideology of race is a factor that determines ones fate. No one is better than the other, start thinking outside the box for the future is upon us and to blind to see it. What ever decision we make this coming election will live with us for the rest of our born lives. Therefore my adice to America is vote for someone not because of the color of his or her skin but by their qualities, honesty, and truthfulness.
God bless America!!!!!!!

countless individuals throughout the world pronounce Nevada “Ne-vah-da.” It’s been driving this native Californian nuts throughout the last couple of weeks as I hear it pronounced thus by many leading news figures.
More to the point, Michelle Obama speaks in some of the clearest English you’ll ever hear. If you took the time to actually listen to her, you’d realize your great error. She’s a graduate of Princeton and Harvard Law School

Bill Clinton is giving the American public the finger again. Remember the finger delivered in the White House when he said: “I am not having sex with that woman Monica Lewinsky.” He looked bothered, passionate, indignant, and wronged as he pointed his finger in your face. He lied. Spread the word about the Clinton finger.

Briana – Actually, I am an Obama supporter, asian-american, and not a racist nor a democrat. Are you voting for Hillary because she’s a woman? Because I am not voting for Obama because he is black or democrat. I support him because he’s the first politician that has actually made me WANT to participate in the campaign process. We held an extravagant mlk day parade in our downtown this morning and the scene was similar to the festivities reported above. Hundreds cheering on behalf of Obama without a Clinton supporter in sight.

Barack Obama is fabulous! He has come from behind to become an amazing competitive force and not only has to compete with other candidates but with a former President of the United States. The reason I support him is because he is all about substance and people love him across this country. Go to http://www.barackobama.com and read his Plan for America and check the Issues instead of making false claims. Those who post empty statements on this site have no substance.

I would just like to say that I believe the Press has favored Mr. Barack Obama who is somewhat qualified but lacks the experience. I would really like to get to the issues but I do not believe this is going to happen. We need Healthcare for all Americans and education for our children not like todays policy no child left behind because they are left behind. Mrs. Hillary Clinton is also qualified and has shown it in the Senate. The people from the state of New York can really testify as to how Mrs. Clinton’s has helped them. I believe that all this arguing will distroy ths Democrates.
