Despite Controversy, Paul Supporters Have a Dream
ABC’s Z. Byron Wolf Reports: The biggest — really the only — major controversy to embroil Ron Paul’s spirited, grassroots and libertarian-minded campaign for the Republican presidential nomination arose last week when allegations of bigotry surfaced.
But you would never know it by judging how the Texas Congressman’s supporters are plotting their latest fundraising explosion.
As voters in New Hampshire went to the polls and gave Paul 8-percent of their vote January 8th, a reporter for the New Republic reported on old newsletters he had unearthed.
Published with Paul’s name on the masthead, unattributed writing in one newsletter spewed some vitriol in the direction of perhaps the most deified American of the last hundred years, civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who according to the newsletter, which Paul has now denounced, was a "world-class philanderer who beat up his paramours" and "seduced underage girls and boys."
Paul responded immediately to the New Republic story by distancing himself from passages in the newsletters from 1992 that argued against enshrining Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a national holiday.
"It’s in there, it’s bad, I recognize that, and I had a moral responsibility. But that doesn’t mean you can indirectly charge me as being a racist," Paul told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer of the newsletters.
"Everybody knows I’m not involved in that kind of language," he added, before disavowing the writing in the reports, which he says he often did not read.
"That’s not my language. That’s not my life," he said. "I honor and respect the civil right movement."
Paul compared himself to a publisher of the reports and asked Blitzer if publisher always know every word in their magazines.
But his supporters have gone a step further on a pair of new websites.
"Please join us this January 21st as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, by acting together to support Dr. Ron Paul, a new hero who fights for the same American principles of liberty and justice for all," reads a banner on the site.
Two previous websites helped raise half of Paul’s nearly $20 million net for the last quarter of 2007.
Supporters commemorated November 5th, the so-called "Gunpowder Plot," a failed attempt in the 17th century by Guy Fawkes to blow up Parliament in England, by raising more than $4 million for Paul.
On December 15th, Paul supporters commemorated the Boston Tea Party at with yet another online fundraising drive hauling in more than $6 million.

These newsletters were old news for Paul supporters. Dr. Paul addressed these newsletters on several previous occasions, many of which were on youtube about a year ago (in case anyone was seriously interested). Its disappointing to realize that New Republic is no better than Fox News.

Wow – I’m blown away!! Ron Paul finally exposed!! Is this “stop the press news” or what!!
Golly, folks with all the fair and balanced press that Ron Paul has received from major media throughout this 2008 election run… (wink, wink) – I kind of feel cheated with this “out of the blue” harsh innuendo….what are we now to think about our champion when major media finally now – tells us the “facts”? Maybe…we shouldn’t support Ron Paul after all… (sniffle, sniffle). Gee whiz – ah shucks!
Please, big media, spare us… any reader even remotely current on American political history knows these decade old debunked allegations against Ron Paul are not “news” but just more “olds” and of the worst form – the old tried and true classic political smear character assassination techniques in the traditions of the muck rakes of old. Wow, how convenient just less than two days prior to one state GOP caucus and another state primary! Who could have ever seen that one coming? And didn’t this smear story first begin to break on the eve of the New Hampshire primary? Hum…….
A word to the wise…please do some credible research and stop with the laughable “arm chair” investigative reporting! Try wearing out some shoe leather and talking to the people who have known Ron Paul and what he has demonstrated with his words and deeds for decades. You should maybe start with going to his home state of Texas, and contact Austin NAACP President, Nelson Linder, who has known Ron Paul for years and has recently clearly stated that Ron Paul is not a racist. Perhaps if you would stick around long enough Mr. Linder could clue you into some of the real problems with “real” racism that face black Americans daily. Or don’t you care to hear those facts….I’m sorry… I didn’t hear your response? ….I’m still waiting?
Perhaps big media should spend half the energy they have wasted in attempting to silence Ron Paul’s bid for the GOP presidential nomination and put that same misguided energy toward doing some good in exposing the racism that is entrenched in the American judicial system against black Americans nationwide of which Ron Paul is adamantly dedicated to exposing and rectifying and so are his supporters.

Actions speak louder than words. Ron Paul’s actions have proven time and time again a dedication to human rights, equality, and respect for all peoples. Throwing empty allegations of bigotry and hatred serve only to divide, not unite the American people. If there is any hope left for America, it can not be found in a divided country.

Isn’t it interesting that no one can find anything current and credible to trash Dr Paul with? They must be getting desperate and frightened out there.

Ron Paul is a man with integrity who sees all people as individuals, regardless of race. I hope he raises lots of money to continue his fight for America. Want to save the economy, vote for Ron Paul.

“How can we get this guy Paul?” “We can bribe.. no. We can get him a girl and then blackmail, no. We can say he’s against the troops. What, they support HIM!?! WELL WHAT THE HELL IS LEFT THEN!?! Well he’s old and he’s white, and people of color do seem to be warming up to his message–Johnson, your brilliant RACIST, an old, white RACIST, that’s gotta work. That’s it, run with it! And what would be better than to get a libertarian to do it, so it looks like he’s alienated from his own base. Perfect! I know just the 20 year old Giuliani supporter to send this idea to. I ‘ll get right on it! Good work Johnson. Good work!” Please people don’t believe the men behind the curtain. True libertarians see people as individuals and not as seperated into manageable groups. They do not play the game of divide and conquer. If Ron Paul was really as bad as they say, they would love to have him in their debates and not lock him out. They would build him up to knock him down. Not suppress and outright mock his ideas from the get go. Ron Paul is a threat to the tyranny of the powerful minority of the elite. That is why he must be destroyed. It is the price that he is willing to pay to restore your liberty. That’s pretty honorable to me and not unlike Dr. King. To slander Dr. Paul is to slander the ideals of Dr. King. That is why he is honoring Dr. King’s birthday. That is not a racist. The people who want people of colors’ lives to be dictated by government, and not by they themselves, are the REAL racists! Wake up and see the light!!!

Granted you brought up the old newsletter writings, but Dr. Paul is so clearly a supporter of individual rights and liberties that its impossible to smear him with that. And he handled it just right. The best is all the publicity on the march and the Liberty PLEDGE, also on a link. Please check out the links, learn, be inspired, and join the revolution!

You forgot to mention that members of the NAACP have come forward in defense of Ron Paul, stated that they know him well, and that the whole racist story was a blown out lie and not true.
I can’t get over how the only reporting the media will do on this guy is negative in nature. And that is only if they decide not to ignor him completely.
Ron Paul is the one honest candidate that consistantly speaks the truth about what is going on in this country and why. And for that he gets nothing but negative remarks from talk show hosts and the media.
It is a long way to the end of the primaries. Let’s see who has what it takes and will be standing at the end.
I could name three campaigns in the republican party that are about a handfull of states from petering out already. And Ron Paul’s name would not be on that list.

I LOVE the subtle “which Paul has now denounced” NOW????? He denounced it over a decade ago. Nice try ABC. Why is this news? Oh yeah, as YOU said, “really the only — major controversy to embroil Ron Paul’s spirited, grassroots and libertarian-minded campaign” You NEEDED to find SOMETHING. I have a great idea! Why don’t you take the side of the PEOPLE instead of the big corporations? Wouldn’t it be NICE to have a good night’s sleep for a change? Or perhaps you stopped caring LONG ago! How said!

The outright denial on this board is unbelievable. People, look at his own site, read those numbers. Those numbers show a man with no real support. What about all those straw polls his site says he won, strange when it comes down to actual votes, he finishes at or near the bottom. He lost my vote in the last debate when he would not support our navy officers for their actions against the Iranian boats. He blew it off like those boats were not threat at all, pack 20 lbs of c4 in the bow Mr Paul and will be picking up dead sailors off the water.

Paul is either lying about his past racism or is an incompetent manager. Neither are acceptable as president.
Posted by: Robster | January 18, 2008, 10:40 am 10:40 am
Mike in Michigan – 1st, your primary is over, so your comment means little. 2nd, Dr. Paul agreed with the passive stance taken by the captains of those Navy vessels and agreed that any more hostile actions taken by the Iranian boats would result in their destruction in “5 seconds”. He just disagreed with the other candidates neo-con desire to ramp the agressive tone toward Iran. With the war in Iraq costing us $500 million a day, spreading the war to Iran would be economic suicide.

The media against Ron Paul is so obvious, that it’s almost funny and is too ridiculous to deny it.
The Paul Campaign has been forced to go to extreme measures to reach voters, and thanks to their unpaid volunteer force they are able to canvass, call and attend public venues to get the Ron Paul message out. Ron Paul has spent less in all 4 post primaries than any Candidate running.
Ron Paul is staying steady and is growing his support and donations across the country. No wonder Faux News deleted the segment from the South Carolina Debate when Brit Humes asked the question about Ron Paul’s electability, Ron Paul laid into Brit Humes, and rightfully so. Ron Paul informed Brit of the truth regarding the other Republicans, and what the Republican Party has turned themselves into. Ron Paul also stated some very important truths, but you will only see it on YouTube.com. Ron Paul is not your typical politician, in fact I do not think of him as one. Ron Paul is an intelligent true conservative, which follows our Constitution, and laws, period. Ron Paul does not sugar coat anything, and is not pandering to special interest groups for votes, he wants to do what is right for WE THE PEOPLE, and our Constitution. I recently read that Giuliani is having a very difficult time in Florida, and I am not surprised. People can see through his lies and deception, but then again he is Faux News and Murdoch’s golden boy.
Ron Paul’s money comes from individual donors (his website updates with donor names in real time). In fact, he has received more monetary support from active and retired members of the military than any other candidate–Republican or Democrat. You might do some investigating to find out who funds the other candidates (www.opensecrets.org). Here’s a hint: it’s not individual donors.
We haven’t even seen Ron Paul spend money yet and just take a look at his following. When all the others are broke; Ron Paul will still be there!
Please answer these questions;
Last week in the South Carolina debate, didn’t Ron Paul say something about the US already being in a recession and it was getting worse fast? The other candidates were basically saying, no not true, economy is not great but doing fine. Now this week the economy is so bad we need an emergency stimulus plan?
Why can’t Ron Paul’s enemies challenge him intellectually? Why do they fight him with this media censorship?

Dont put words in my post. I never said DONT support him, i said he does not have the support needed to win, his website will back that up. The primaries have also backed that up to this point. Again, its not what you or i say, its what the voters say. 4 states down.

Using 20lbs because thats all it took to kill more than a few aboard the USS COLE. Granted it was supply ship and not a destroyer, but you get my point. As i havent stated, i DO agree with some of Dr Pauls stands. But again, i dont see widespead support. I see support, but not at the numbers needed to win. At the end , they will count delegates, Ron has 2. You need 1191 to get your parties nomination. A sweep of super tuesday would do it for him. But i dont see that happening.

Ron Paul has an 11 year history as congressman. You can look at his record and get some idea what he thinks; and whether he has followed his conscience in his votes. He has taken the time to study economics and can speak intelligently about our economic problems and their roots (which is more than most of the candidates can do). Hillary will probably look to Summers (previously president of Harvard and Sec. of the Treasury under Bill Clinton) – you know Summers, he is the one that believes that women can’t think clearly or do serious math – if elected Hillary would bring Summers back to solve the economic problems. (Summers himself announced that on a televised Charley Rose program). Summers has already admitted on that TV interview with Charley Rose that he had no idea that the globalization free trade Summers championed would cause the destruction of the American middle class. (Summers should have asked some of the middle class – it does NOT (contrary to his opinion) take a Ph. D. in economics to figure it out !! ). On Charley Rose’s program, Summers proposed solving it “by more education for the displaced workers”. Somebody should write to Summers and patiently explain WHY THAT won’t work . Summers proposed the government would pay for the “more education”. Charley Rose wisely said “and how would the government pay for that ?” Summers’ answer “by collecting the millions and millions of dollars of uncollected taxes ” !!! Makes you want to cry, doesn’t it ?
I don’t believe Ron Paul’s record shows that he is a racist; but I do believe he has the record of an earnest thinking man. He is an experienced physician and does understand how the federal government and pharmaceutical companies have worked in concert to virtually destroy what used to be the best medical care in the world. And he just might have some good ideas about how to begin to fix the problems!! (And he doesn’t need or get $400 haircuts or live in a 28,000 square foot home – as Edwards (“Mr. Workingman” is reported in the Christian Science Monitor)! Our politicians need to have some daily contact themselves with the problems and issues that real Americans – you know, those who don’t net over $50,000 a year – how real working families live today .

Ron Paul is the only candidate that actually tells it how it is, too bad most people believe what MSM tells them instead. This country needs to wake up and take back our great nation before it is too late. We have pandered to the media and big business for far to long. We need a leader who is not afraid to tell us what really needs to be done to straighten out this unbelievably huge mess our country and economy are in. Take a little time and read what Ron is all about and you will see what an honest man really looks like. Go Ron Paul, you have my vote on election day!!

There is tons of dirt and skeletons to be found on every single other candidate with any real chance of winning — including racist charges against Obama (quotes from his own book), McCain (words spoken from his own mouth), etc. Don’t even get me started on Huckabee…
So you must ask yourself then, why is Ron Paul being singled out? I think the answer to that is he’s got them all running scared now. He’s growing more powerful every day and this is just the beginning. Even Cafferty on CNN has said that the amount of devoted supporters Ron Paul has is amazing and more than any other candidate.
I’m putting my money on Ron Paul to win. Why? Because he is the only politician I’ve ever seen that does not lie or pander, his record in Congress speaks for itself, he’s the only candidate that voted against the Patriot Act and regulating the Internet, he believes in individual rights, and quite simply, he wants to give us our country back.
Plus he makes a lot of sense when he talks about ending the war, getting rid of the criminal IRS and his economic knowledge is phenomenal.
Guess who I’m voting for in 2008 come Hell or high water?

Media write untruths about racism, and then the Ron Paul supporters stop reading their silly stories and commenting? Ron Paul had it right on the blowback and Al Queda, so when will the media understand and see the real truth about Ron Paul, unfortuately, I think it will be when they are out of business, and in the food lines.

FOR “Mike in Michigan.”
Ron Paul is guilty of being “irresponsible” and “negligent” by not paying more attention to the articles that went out under his name. He’s NOT guilty of “racism.”
This was also the time when he was an OB/GYN. He was of course hands on, delivering babies. He never was sued for “negligence” or “irresponsibility” as a doctor. He didn’t have someone deliver babies for him. He didn’t have anyone taking his place and making decisions as a Congressman. In neither of this jobs did he become “negligent” or “irresponsible.”
BUT when it came to newsletters/article, where others were involved he laid back and was trusting.
Understand man??
I’m Hispanic, my husband’s African American. We’re NOT buying that B.S.

Ok, so the media is criticizing Paul. Yet they do not criticize the things as much for those who are the front runners. Sure they may bring a few things up about them, yet Paul is barely mentioned. I believe the media has a lot of bias, and I do not believe this will be the end of this movement. Support this movement he has started! Believe in it! Well, then it must be a conscious effort to present only one side. Congratulaions, your not fair and balanced ,either.
