ABC News’ John Berman Reports: Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney calls himself a Michigander. He was born here. His father was governor. He says that, for him, Michigan’s economic woes are personal.
Moreover, he says he takes great pride in Michigan’s auto industry, which he says he is uniquely suited to help save.
"What a thrill it is to come back to Michigan, particularly in winter where the skies are cloudy all day, and trees are just the right height, you know, almost all the cars you see are American made, like they ought to be."
Being surrounded by American made cars might be a welcome change … from his own garage.
Romney drives a Mustang now, but the Boston Herald reported records show Romney owned a 1985 BMW and a 1996 Saab Turbo 9000.
The Herald quoted a GOP insider saying Romney treated the classic BMW — his favorite — "like his baby."
No word if the trees in his yard are the wrong height.
UPDATE: Since the posting of the story above, the Romney campaign has provided a further list of the cars he has owned (in addition to the BMW):
- 2005 Ford Mustang GT
- 2002 Chevy Silverado truck
- 2005 Cadillac SRX crossover SUV
- 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
- Buick Skylark
- Chevrolet Caprice Classic
- Chevrolet Caprice Classic station wagon (complete with the wood paneling).
- Dodge Durango
- Dodge Ram
- And a 1962 Rambler that was a gift from his sons.
Also, some semantic experts point out GM bought SAAB some year ago. Unclear whether that still makes it a foreign car or not.
