Edwards: S.C. Deserves Better Than Clinton-Obama Bickering
ABC News’ Raelyn Johnson Reports: South Carolina voters eating grits and ham at the Country Ham House in Greenville this morning, were served a side a politics from former Sen. John Edwards.
Rehashing the personal jabs that were thrown by Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama during Monday evening’s Democratic debate, Edwards told several hundred voters, "That may be the way they do politics in New York, it may be the way they do politics in Chicago, but South Carolina is better than that, and you deserve better than that."
"While they’re intent on tearing each other down I’m intent on building up the people of South Carolina, giving them a real chance, focusing on jobs, healthcare, the things that really affect their day to day lives,” Edwards told reporters after the event. “That’s what my campaign is about, it’s what it will continue to be about and I think that’s what people in South Carolina deserve.”
While Edwards may have been sidelined in Monday’s debate — he’s now using the squabbling to his advantage. A senior Edwards campaign advisor tells ABC News the campaign is launching both a television and radio ad today in South Carolina.
The television ad is entitled “Grown Up” and will say that Edwards was the only grown up in the debate, where Obama slammed Clinton for working as "corporate lawyer" for Wal-Mart, and Clinton shot back at Obama for ties to Tony Rezko, an indicted Chicago developer.
The radio ad will also speak to the bickering between Clinton and Obama. It will echo Edwards’ line of defense in the debate — asking how Democratic Party in-fighting will help solve the issues facing American families.

Rick Santorum's Full Speech at CPAC 2012
I agree with Edwards, the surest way to hand a victory in November to McCain, Romney, or Huckabee, will be to continue the infighting. This doesn’t serve either candidate, the Democratic Party, or the country well. Stick to the issues; forget the personalities.

I have said before that as I long time Clinton supporter I think they will live to regret the very harsh recent rhetoric. This only serves to split the party and will give Republicans more ammunitions. I am especially surprised at Bill Clintons tone. They really need to tone it down and bring their discussion up to a higher level like John Edwards.

I am still looking forward John Edward to be in the white house next year. If he’s not a president, being a vice president of the U.S. still fine.

Thank you for saying something about John Edwards. Not only is he deserving of more coverage, he’s also the most worthy candidate for the nomination. His poll numbers will continue to go up around the country as more and more people hear his message of real, transformational change…without the undue influence of corporate lobbyists and PACs.

John Edwards is the best candidate for the job of President. He has a plan that is written out on his website. He’s consistant in his answers and he has honesty on his side. He knows that we will never have a chance with lobbyists in the back pocket of the politicians. Hillary Rodham and Barrack Hussein need to stand aside since they aren’t willing to give up the money train to help America.

I think that both Obama and Clinton campaigns are showing the true face behind their slogans. Same old politics, dirty tricks, smear campaign tactics and innuendos. They want to win at all cost!
I am tired already of the bickering and nasty stuff coming out from both sides, they are already hurting the party and both candidates are bounded for a match with the Republicans! I’ll vote for Edwards!

John Edwards is the biggest fraud of all every Bill this man voted yes to has hurt the same people who are stupid enough to vote for him. You can want him all you like No Person with at least a 6th Grade education will vote for him. He will be done after Sat and out of money! Not his but the tax payers that he gets from Fed matching funds.
He wants your votes but he takes your hard working money to do it.
Its so easy to see how the AMERICAN PEOPLE are like sheep that follow the WOLVES!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Nando | January 25, 2008, 12:12 pm 12:12 pm
Nando-They ALL get federal matching funds. I am sure Obama and Clinton get a lot more of our tax dollars in matching funds then does Edwards. He unfortunately had to give in this time around (he did not take matching funds in 2004) to matching funds because the money being raised for campaigns has gotten out of control and it becomes a matter of whoever has the most money wins the election. It’s a sad statement about the way we elect those who are supposed to represent us.

The best man for the job is Joe Biden. But ill take either Obama or Edwards as a consolation prize. I will never vote for Hillary. McCain has a better shot at getting my vote.
Posted by: waleeg | January 25, 2008, 12:49 pm 12:49 pm
Nando, the truth is that John Edwards has co-sponsored the Patients Bill of Rights (didn’t pass both houses) and has worked hard to make many bills more progressive with some important modifications or amendments. He has said that his vote to authorize the war in Iraq was wrong (something Hillary Clinton has not been willing to say, by the way), and he’s the most aggressive candidate on getting us out of Iraq. Clinton and Obama each have raised over $100 million, and have opted out of public financing. Personally, I would much rather have worthy, viable candidates receive public financing than from the likes of Enron, ExxonMobil, and Halliburton, et al, ad nauseum. Although I’m very skeptical of politicians in general, I’m certain about the wisdom of supporting John Edwards for president.

John Edwards is brilliant, and he deserves a more serious look by all Americans. The media needs to give him more attention, as he deals with the issues. Just because he’s not a woman, he’s not in from a minority ethnic group, he has a Southern accent and he’s nice-looking, doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have brains! Start paying attention!
Posted by: Sally | January 25, 2008, 1:13 pm 1:13 pm
Peter – that’s exactly the reaction the Clintons want you to have. That’s why they orchestrated this whole thing to play out like it has. Sure, maybe Obama wins on specific point-by-point analysis, but in the end, its an appearance of two campaigns just going at one another.
Exactly what they want.
Why? Because they know Clinton wouldn’t be seen as anything more anyway. And they know Edwards won’t have the resources to run a national campaign. So to win all they have to do is give the appearance of knocking Obama down to their level, while helping the media to define his candidacy as that of just another African-American who can do well among African-Americans but who can’t win among whites.
Its brilliant, in sort of an evil scientist kinda way.

Edwards needs to go sit down. No one is listening to him and he knows it. His campaign will be toast in a few weeks.

Ha, Obama and Axelrod should be back to Chicago soon so they can strategize how are they going to deal with all the facts coming out of the Rezko trial. The buzz in Chicago is that the Feds and the Prosecutor Fitzgerald will bring down some big names during the trial. Fasten your seat belts!

i love you eric in la, tell it like it is. thanks for all who wrote positive notes for edwards. he is the best candidate on both sides.

You all sound very nice. But you need to read Sam Donaldson piece. It’s not a garden party. It never has been. In fact, before T.V., it was far worse. The papers sensationalized it all, but it was in words. The papers sold like crazy, even though it was ugly. So now it’s on T.V., no where near as ugly as it used to be. But it’s still sensationalized, ’cause ratings count.

i agree irma, sad but true, across the ages- i guess it is human nature, we must hold on against the current, try to stay grounded in the madness. edwards message is easiest for me to hold on to. i believe he is genuine. not wanting to play games. the others are good people. i just dont feel they see the whole picture as strongly as jre

Great news, the Edwards campaign announced that in the first 25 days of this quarter, campaign has raised more online than the whole 4th quarter – the vast majority of which will be doubled by federal matching funds!!
Go Edwards!!

I don’t think that Edwards position himself well in this campaign. Fight for middle class means make money from middle class for him. the reason of Hillary and Obama took so much attention this year is that both of them represents so contrasting things before people. new vs old, past vs future, nice vs nasty, heart vs game, truth vs fales, grassroot vs status equo, honesty vs lying. there is no too much room for Edwards.

Apparently nobody remembers the earlier debates when Edwards and Obama played like a tag team against Clinton until she had to defend herself. Until then, she was critized for talking issues rather than “answering their petty charges”. Now Edwards says he is the “Grown Up”. How sad.

I just sent an online contribution to John Edwards. I have never in my life contributed to a political campaign. But, I trust this guy, and more than that, his economic and health care plans are fantastic (the latter copied by Clinton). And, he is going to get our guys and gals out of Iraq in his first year in office. I don’t get to vote ’til February 5, but I know he will still be in the race, and my vote will be for JRE.
PS. My health insurance costs $1000 a month. My mother is 87 and now requires care I can’t give her that will take every penny my dad left her and more. Believe me, I have thought hard about who I trust to get us out from under the control of the big insurance companies. John Edwards for President.

Edwards will be worst nightmare for the lobbyists, drugs companies, oil companies, the corrupt Washington establishment, and the right wing Republicans, thats why they are pouring all the money into Hillary and Obama campaigns; they know Hillary or Obama can’t win the general election, one has way to much baggage and polarized and the other has only empty promises, big slogans and big speeches; but no record. Well at least Hillary is also a a fighter and she will not go down easily…but Obama…hmmm Obama will run to hide behind Oprah, Napolitano, Tyra first or run behind Kerry, Dashle, Jackson, etc. He can’t handle the heat! Hillary and Obama are winning or on the lead only because they have political machines supporting them, all millions of dollars and surrogates covering all the press and media, take that away from them and put them in the same page with Edwards and they both will have not chance!
I was undecided before; but I like a President that can stand on his own on priciples and has the guts to fight big groups, big packets and corruption! I believe Edwards is the right man!
Edwards for President 2008!

Gee, John’s numbers must be going up for us to hear such baseless nonesense like the above comment about haircuts. If anyone is interested, I read that the campaign was reimbursed for two such haircuts. For someone with John’s well-documented wealth, who cares what he spends on a haircut? As long as he sincerely cares about stopping the fleecing of America by powerful monied interests, and I believe he does, who in their right mind gives a rip about this minutia? Edwards 08!!!

N>C> deserves better then a plaitifs atty. who lives like a Saudi prince, and gets $400 haircuts

This is ridiculous. Thank goodness someone had the decency to stand up and tell Americans “Hey these guys are acting like three-year-olds!” Stop the bickering and the mudslinging and get down to the stuff that really matters!

Regardless of the vote, let`s hope at least he has the guts to demand that retirees on Soc Sec get rebates along with the $1,000`s for those earning up to $150,000, PLUS tax breaks if they own a business. Those on Soc Sec surely need it the most to meet high costs of gas, heating, clothes, food and home repairs and will spend it quickly. Bush and Pelosi want the bill passed quickly, not to get the money into the hands of those who need it, their plan will hardly do that. but to obscure the fact that
business owners are getting a triple benefit (rebate, tax cuts and stimulative spending) while the poor get nothing.

This is of course, cynical but fair opportunistic politics by John Edwards. Ironically, his campaign complains about the lack of coverage of his candidacy, but in this case, that also means far less scrutiny as well. If the media was scrutinizing the Edwards campaign, it might point out to the voters in S.C. (who may not have viewed previous debates) that it was often Edwards who was the most combative in previous debates, when he thought that strategy suited him best at the moment.

Craig, excuse me, but you need to get a clue. Edwards is not going to drop out of the race. He’s going all the way to the convention, the nomination, and to the White House. The American people are starting to wake up. They’re beginning to see that when you vote for a candidate that’s marinated in corporate cash, you’re going to get a president that’s beholden to those same powerful monied interests, the ones that will forever stand in the way of the solutions we need. Clinton is one of the worst in this regard, but Obama’s funding sources are virtually the same as hers, and they each have raised over $100 million. These two candidates will only succeed in making the world even safer for multinational corporations, instead of creating a world at peace that addresses the needs of all human beings. John Edwards is the only candidate that will bring real, transformational change to this nation and the planet, period. Sadly, the others are merely spewing a lot of empty rhetoric. Edwards’ poll numbers are rising and the campaign reports record fund raising for this month.
