McCain’s Lucky Charms

ABC News’ Ron Claiborne and Alyssa Litoff Report: John McCain will tell you he’s a bit of a superstitious person, at least when it comes to Election Day omens.

Today, the Republican presidential candidate admitted to carrying the same coin he found — face up — on a street in Portsmouth, N.H. on the day of his last campaign stop of 2000 in his left pocket.

He said he was also wearing the same sweater (green).

"Any superstition you can imagine, I indulge in it," he said outside the New Hampshire Union Leader, the state’s largest newspaper which endorsed him this year as it did in 2000.

"Whatever I can do that’s superstitious, I’ll do it," he added.

The former senator from Arizona also said he also made a stop there on the day of that primary.

When asked if he cared to make a "Joe Namath-style" guarantee of success, he responded: "No, no, no. I’m superstitious about that, too."

In an effort to recapture the political magic that propelled him to an 18-point win in the New Hampshire primary in 2000, he held his 100th town hall-style campaign event in Peterborough, N.H., where he had the same kind of event with the same kind of large, enthusiastic crowd just before the 2000 primary.

Last night, he ended his campaign in Portsmouth, just as he did eight years ago.

Truly unbelievable!! I had thought that McCain would be the one to stand above the crowd, not stoop down to pick up a penny!! My allegience in the republican party is relly starting to falter. What on earth is the matter with these guys, does anyone understand the meaning of being presidential, besides Hillary? How does this leave us with?

Like Giuliani, McCain will succumb to his own demons. After all, “character is destiny”. Ask the survivors of the USS Liberty.

If John McCain WERE president and got the 2 a.m. call and he couldn’t find his lucky coin, what would he do? Is this who we want for president?
