Obama Flashback: Ted Kennedy Is Old and Needs a Spine

So, apparently, JFK has been reborn. Who knew?

Barack Obama was understandably appreciative of Ted Kennedy passing the torch to him today.

A few years ago, though, Obama wasn’t as appreciative of the liberal lion.

Attending a 2003 AFL-CIO forum, the then-state senator took issue with the prescription drug bill Congress was putting together, which Kennedy was helping to negotiate.

"We gotta call not just Republicans," Obama said. "We gotta call up Ted Kennedy, and say, ‘Ted, you’re getting a little old now, and maybe, you been a fighter for us before. I don’t know what’s happening right now, Ted, get some spine. Stand up to the Republicans."

Watch the video HERE.

Ouch.

UPDATE: A writer from the  Huffington Post e-mails to say they broke this a few weeks ago. I did not know this — I got the link from YouTube — but credit where credit is due. Here’s the HuffPo link.

I love this article. Ted Kennedy is bad news anyway. Remember Chappaquidick? Does it ring a bell? Our generation is a lot different that his time and specially the situation of our country still at war, immigration, and bad economy. We need a strong president who can lead on day one. Hillary Rocks!!!!

We just have to remember one quote that said false prophets will only lead those unpure of heart, and that prophet has his own ambitious agenda. Sort of remind you of Obama, the media and his supporters. They must all have the mark of the beast.

Why aren’t people questioning the hypocricy of Obama saying he is running as a Washington outsider and hates lobbyists and then aligns himself so closely to those who are Washington and lobbyists through and through when it comes to Teddy Kennedy and John Kerry. Having to use these folks to get the nomination (if Obama does) will be draped on Obama’s shoulders by the GOP big time.

of course obama speaks out of both sides of his time and time again but the ignorant pseudointellectuals think they have aligned themselves with their messiah watch thats the biggest spoof yet it will only be more taxes more programs to incourage people not to work heah its their right you cant say anything because its racist

Yes, I also remember Chappaquidick and what Ted Kennedy did when the young girl drowned. He did not report the accident until several hours later?

Posted by: Joven Kuan | January 28, 2008, 9:53 pm 9:53 pm

Well say goodbye to the middle class definately.
One rich boy backing another rich boy. Both who went to private schools and one who flunked out of Harvard.
We will get to see the rich get richer(for those were the only ones before this race baiting stuff went on-that supported Obama)
We will also see more welfare, welfare and welfare for those that don’t want to work from Obama and his liberal lion.
What a wonderful Camelot very fitting for the dark ages. And both camelots ended poorly if I remember the stories correctly.

So you just happened to find this on YouTube Jake? Just like the Huffington Post happened to find it? And just like the National Review and Atlantic Online happened to find it today?
Maybe you should do some reporting and find out where this video came from and why it’s being pushed now?
This was used previously to push the dumb idea that Obama hated liberals like Ted Kennedy while loving Republicans. Now it’s used just to entertain a few morons who can be fooled into thinking it means something.

Dear Senator Kennedy and Mrs. Schlossberg , Thank you both very much for the thoughtful GIFT- its’ everything we ever wanted …and MORE! Signed, EVERY REPUBLICAN

The amazing thing is how many people bought into the Obama-craze. Pawning the country future in dire time on heresays

Guys, these anti Obama comments seem to be getting a little desperate.
It is QUITE clear that he is exciting this country like NO ONE has done for the longest time. I am a Republican who knows it would be easier for us in November if we ran against Hillary and Bill’s third term – the ONLY way that we will be able to beat Obama is if we see a terrorist action late in the election cycle and the people of this country move toward McCain for security. Obama is a brillant speaker and is a running a campaign that will eventually put HRC out of the race. His secret is very, very simple – he is authentic which is a word that the Democrats have not been able to say out loud since the Gennifer Flowers Sixty Minutes Interview in 1991. If we see an Obama/McCain final, we will see a fair and clean race between two fine gentlement who will help the other after defeat. This is what this country needs more than anything right now.
CONCILIATION.

Kerry and the Kennedys are going to help the GOP win the general election because if you think the right hates the Clintons, multipy that by 2 when it comes to those guys (elitist)from that part of the country. The red states just got stronger in color. Obama is destined to lose because of those affiliations. The latino vote will not go for Obama, McCain looks better by the day.

Posted by: bob | January 28, 2008, 10:57 pm 10:57 pm

EASY-Not as desperate as all the fanatical cult of Obama supporter who are out there blogging every day, with little substance just like Obama. By throwing out jabs like, flower and Lewinsky and this race bull that the media played over and over again, to try and brainwash the public with all the old dirt that everyone new about when Hillary was thier candidate, before Obama came around with all this do called hope hoopla. What a cult classic. The false prophet has really come, hasn’t he in Obama.
Obama will definately bridge the gap, now-I think not now that he has Kennedy backing him-how will get the repunlican right wing won over when it matters to pass a bill in Congress. Now our country will really be at a stand still.

Posted by: Dave | January 28, 2008, 11:13 pm 11:13 pm

Ted Kennedy is agaist any woman being President so he backs a simple minded man like Obama. The latino vote will never back him.If he is the nominee..I will vote for McCain.

Posted by: ANTONN | January 28, 2008, 11:17 pm 11:17 pm

This had been an awfully interesting democratic primary election thus far. But, it is getting very dirty. Both the Obama’s and Clinton’s campaign need to stop this nonsense and start behaving better. Either one would help the country’s standing and health. But the way it is going, enough dirt is thrown that I am afraid either of them will lose the general election. Of course, this is very typical of democrats, anyway. They know how to hurt themselves quite well. They could not win the white house decisively in 7 out of the past 10 elections. It is probably better not to have Ted Kennedy & John Kerry (and Bill Clinton) involved in the general election. They may fire up the base and may help the nominee lose the center.

Posted by: Commoner | January 28, 2008, 11:18 pm 11:18 pm

Kennedy is just afraid that the Clinton dynasty will surpass the Kennedy dynasty, it’s in self indulgence that he makes sure the Kennedy Legacy outlast any other in his lifetime for his own sake, for he could not keep it alive and get the nomination himself in “79″. Why not support someone who doesn’t have a family with strong political ambitions and won’t do anything more than one term at best. How self imposing.

Posted by: DeeDee | January 28, 2008, 11:24 pm 11:24 pm

Kennedy’s endorsement for Obama looks very powerful now, but I think it will have a negative effect on Obama’s candidacy within the next few days. Obama shouldn’t have courted Ted Kennedy’s endorsement. As people say, “Be careful what you wish for”.

Posted by: Otillap | January 29, 2008, 12:00 am 12:00 am

Obama has blamed the Clintons for embracing the past. What a hypocrite. He’s know enthusiastically embracing the legacy of a president who’s been dead for almost a half century. This worm with a pepsodent smile will apparently say anything.

And as for Ted endorsing Barack, thank GOD!!! He wants to change America with 40 year DC veteran pulling his puppet strings!

Vote Republican if your tired of the racism. We have room for all races. Bring us your tired and your poor. We are not the white party or rich party. Look at the Democratic party which has all the money and race problems. Obama and Clinton have 200 million dollars each. Which Republican is rich like them. All the Democrats are scum lawyers to. That should tell you something

God, this just gets worse and worse. Now Ted Kennedy endorses Obama and gives the Camelot touch? I was a 40s baby who believed in JFK and his magic. I still remember where i was the horrible day in Dallas but that was a different time and we were all a lot more gullible. It was before we knew that JFK was just a man like all of us and a time when we believed in the legend of Camelot. These days I dont believe in fairy tales and I cannot help but wonder if Mary Jo would have supported Obama if she were still alive

Posted by: Sandy Gauntlett | January 29, 2008, 7:04 am 7:04 am

Obama has not run anything. How can people think he could run our Country? You must be ignorant, or just totaly out of touch. Run a State for a few years and get baqck to us. I,m a Democrat and can’t believe these are the best canidates we can put forward, we should be ashamed.

Obama gets Kennedys endorsement….Wow, now that’s change in Washington. You think that Obama might help old Ted push his WAY too left agenda?

Posted by: Scott | January 29, 2008, 7:35 am 7:35 am

Funny-how no commentator is analyzing Patrick Kennedys reason why they endorsed Obama. If people actually can think for themselves it sounded like it was just Obama’s message they endorse(like Uncle johns’s), not on what he can do in the white house or his agneda on the core issues. He also said in the interview he will be behind Hillary if she is the nominated candidate. So an endorsement does not say much since he and his Dad can change thier minds down the road.

Posted by: DeeDee | January 29, 2008, 8:03 am 8:03 am

I am saddened for both my country and the Kennedy legacy. I think this does great diservice to the memory of John and Robert Kennedy. It reminds me of Lloyd Benson’s observation about Dan Quayle. Obama — you are no John Kennedy — not even close. Obama is an inspiring speaker but haven’t we demonstrated with George Bush taht we need substance? Remember his first campaign about he was a uniter?? If this is who this country elects — doubtful when the Republican machine gets hold of him — god help us.

It’s just funny how it all panned out, the endorsementon State of the Union, Obama and Ted laughing and sitting together last night. It entertained my thoughts that Ted may have just bought his son a VP on Obama’s ticket. Why not who want’s thier dynasty to be strongest political dynasty more than any other in the country, our so called royal family the Kennedys. It looks like Ted bashed the Bush dynasty and the Clinton dynasty in one day, no one should ever be as strong as those Kennedy’s.
Good job, Obama taking a old status quo politician in your helm, it’s nice that politicians can be bought and call in favors later in Washington. Looks like Obama has alot of favors he is gonna have to make good on.

In accordance with this article (and clip), Ted Kennedy did mention that Obama has the courage to stand up, for the American people, against matters with which his political peers disagree (ie. against the war in Iraq).
So what does this clip show? This clip says that Ted Kennedy embraces a candidate that is not afraid of the establishment (even if he [Ted Kennedy] is a part of that establishment). It tells me that Ted Kennedy is not afraid to support a candidate who is against Cronyism. It also tells me that Obama is able to inspire even the oldest and most experienced members of American politics to embrace new ideas and ways of solving problems unique to this period for the nation.

Endorsing Obama is the biggest favour Ted Kennedy could ever do for Hillary Clinton. Once this incubates a while in the minds of the electorate, I predict a huge backlash. At this point it is up to my generation to inform the younger voters about Chappaquidick. No Mr. Kennedy, we have not forgotten. The youngsters need to Google this and become informed, the ones who were around at the time it happened need to refresh their memories. Ted Kennedy should have counted his blessings that he was able to get away with what he did and just disappeared into the night just like he did the evening that young woman drowned. WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN TED. Hillary, you will prevail.

Kennedy’s endorsements reveals how bad the disconnect is between Dem. Party far left and majority of Democrats and independent voters. They only grudgingly tolerated Bill Clinton and his policies because he got them the White House back. Once elected they deserted him like rats on a sinking ship. They’re showing thier stripes with Obama’s endorsement. Obama skills and accomplishments are significant. The only hole in his Presidential resume is experience, and he just doesn’t have it yet. Hillary Clinton has it at and is electable. Democratic Party far left is flexing its political muscles with this endorsement. An exercise that will split the party and endangers changing the policies to get country back on track. This country can’t afford anything that would hobble or obstruct those changes.
Senator Kennedy, you blew it.

GO BARACK! The Kennedys have always fought for the people that need it the most. So many people have been inspired by their leadership. Although I was only about 10 years old I remember RFK giving speeches and can only guess how many people have been inspired by this Great family. I think this endorsement is HUGE for Obama and hope that he gets the nomination and then the presidency. Finally, there is hope after years of failed leadership.

Posted by: Mike | January 29, 2008, 9:34 am 9:34 am

Aren’t the Kennedys the epitome of the Washington establishment and the political “old guard”? I am wondering if the Kennedys endorsement of Senator Obama doesn’t place Obama squarely in the camp of the old-guard Washington establishment? And by not getting the Kennedy endorsement, doesn’t this help separate Senator Clinton from “Washington as usual”? I wonder why the pundits don’t see this endorsement as situating Senator Obama in the middle of Washington politics as usual?

Posted by: Saki | January 29, 2008, 10:02 am 10:02 am

If you fools think Obama can win the moderate hawkish center, with the liberal Ted Kennedy at his helm, you are crazy.
Democrats fall for this every time. They always nominate liberal candidates (Kerry) and it never works. Need the center, folks.. and that means a pragmatic moderate. The only one left is Hillary. Think about it, folks. Do you want to feel all warm fuzzy until November, then live in republican hell for 4 years after that? Or do you want to be realistic.

Posted by: Independant mind | January 29, 2008, 10:03 am 10:03 am

I about died laughing! The Kennedy’s were not great and were never a great family. Old man Joe was a bootlegger and bought everything for his boys. Do some serious reading about that family and the only current family they resemble is the one in power right now. No matter what, too many remember they and they were a nothing then and are a nothing today. Teddy is just trying to buy back the WH for future Kennedy offspring.

I just about had it with these liberal socialist candidates Obama with his double speak say nothing talk, the victim mentality of Clinton and Obama. The fairytale impression that people respect a coward senator who should be rotting in a jail cell Ted Kennedy.
How will a Lib bring us together when they are the ones splitting up the country?
This President to my dismay has reached over the aisle more times then anyother to only have his hand smacked. The immigration Amnesty bill is a Ted Kennedy Liberal Hate America bill.
To vote for Obama, Hilary or Edwards is a treasonable act against this country!! None have experience each is stupid to say that taking away the tax cuts is not a tax increase, ummm dopey if taxes were lowered and then you take away that lowering you are INCREASING taxes.

The Kennedys are correct. Who wants to live in the harsh and ugly world of compromise and back stabbing that the Cs wallow in. Let us remember that in the most important vote she ever made in her Senatorial experience, Hillary voted to give Bush the authority to preempt war in Iraq. Now after nearly 4,000 American lives have been lost, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis are dead and 2 trillion dollars spent, she says no one can know the future. But it was not a wrong decision based on predicting the future, it was a wrong decision based on not being able to clearly view the present. She did not understand the “urgency of now”. There was no evidence of WMD or an Iraq/Al Qaeda connection. She made her decision because she was all wrapped up in the feelings and fears of the public and the political correctness of materializing an enemy to fight for the moment. All the policy wonking wonders in the world, cannot bring back the lives that have been lost. She has shown us that the kind of experience she has does not necessarily make for good leadership. When others were swept up in the politics of the moment, he really had the coolness to see the situation as it truly was. Do you want to hear Hill unapologetically say for four more years “If I knew then what I know now?”. There is a reason she is trying to dirty up Obama’s stand on the Iraqi war, it is because there really is no excuse for a leader to botch it up at a crucial moment as badly as she did. Lets not be fooled by someone who claims competence even after making the biggest error of our time, and then tries to vindicate herself by lying about someone else’s good record.

Posted by: maddymappo | January 29, 2008, 10:38 am 10:38 am

It is far too early to take a hard line stance regarding any candidate. History has shown us that over time, the real truth comes out and the candidates true colors shine through for all of us to see. Americans we should be more patient, open minded and far less naive so we can form our own opinions based upon our FEELINGS and good SENSES our creator gave us! If you stop to think, you will find you are able to make your political decisions YOURSELF and not be swayed by your fellow man’s opinions. You know, use YOUR brain. It works! God bless you all!

By the way, I heard that Bill practically begged Ted not to endorse Obama. Sounds to me like the Clintons thought the endorsement would’ve been pretty helpful to them!

all you libs do is throw out allegations against President Bush with no facts whatsoever!! you ignore the facts, you ignore History, you ignore the corruption of the Democratic Party, to a point that you blame the race baiting being done by Obama and Hilary on the Republicans. I think Ted Kennedy is digusting to have not stayed neutral. Obama is no JFK and it is a betrayal of his brother’s memory. What must Caroline be thinking?! Obama is beautiful words, full of nothing. And if she and her uncle really listen to each debate, in every case, it was Obama who uttered the first attacks, not Hillary. She is gracious as well as strong, smart and equipped to do the job of President. I think Obama’s arrogance came thru loud and clear in his snub of Hillary Clinton last night. Of course he would speak out and stand up for what is right about Ted Kennedy or anyone else. This is likely one of the reasons Ted Kennedy endorsed him! Reading through all these “party” comments scares me beyond words for my grandchildren’s futures. This election depends on Americans, and most Americans are so party-minded that most seem completely unwilling or unable to listen to anyone in the other party or that might not agree line by line with their every opinion (which may change tomorrow). How VERY sad! And how NOT what our founding fathers envisioned for us 200 years down the road. They must all be tossing and turning in their graves. We are no better than the men and women sitting in seats of power who play Russian Roulette with our tax dollars, vote themselves raises, garner dollars and perks for their home states, and vote for impossible wars that have nothing to do with us. The cartoonist said it best who said, “We have met the enemy and he is us!” Thanks to KCl! You are the only voice of reason that I have found in this entire site, but what a shame!
