Obama Warns SC Voters of ‘Hoodwinking’

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller Reports: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., warned a Sumter, South Carolina crowd against the "hoodwinking," "bamboozling" and "okey doke" by people in other campaigns.

"Don’t be confused when you start hearing a whole bunch of this negative stuff. Those are the same old tricks. They’re trying to bamboozle you. It’s the same old okey doke……Don’t let people turn you around because they’re just making stuff up! That’s what they do. They try to bamboozle you…. to hoodwink you!"

Obama said that game where people "try to pretend you said stuff you didn’t say," is a game that needs to end.

Addressing the doubts that people have about this presidential run, Obama ran through the list, "I know that there are some people who I’ve been hearing say, ‘well, you know, he can’t do it. You know he’s too young….or African Americans can’t do it or he’s got a funny name or Clinton is too strong," Obama spoke about the critique of his candidacy, "Always some reasons why you can’t do something, but you know I’m one of those people when you tell me I can’t do something…..that’s when I decide I’m gonna do that."

Obama urged the predominately African American crowd that he’s on the brink of something special in South Carolina, with the primary just three days away, but it can’t happen if they do not go to the polls on Saturday.

"There’s nothing false about it, it’s no fairy tale," Obama blatantly said to the crowd, answering criticisms from both Clintons.

Here are 4 questions for the candidates during the next debates which have not been answered.
Do you support the Military Commission Act that empowers the president at his discretion to declare any U.S. citizen as an enemy combatant and subjected to detention without charge or due process, which could include anti-war protesters?
Do you support the John Warner Defense Authorization Act which allows the president to declare a public emergency and station US military troops anywhere in America as well as take control of state based national guard units without the consent of the governor in order to detain disorderly American citizens?
Do you support National Security Presidential Directive 51 which establishes a new post-disaster plan allowing the President to be charge of all three branches of government for as long the Presidents determines the duration of a national emergency, instead of the Congress making that determination? If you do, how is this different from a dictatorship?
Do you support the bill before the Senate called the The Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Act which allows the government to spy on all Americans Internet and email communications?

This is very simple…. who has been distorting “facts”? Hillary. Who is attacking? Hillary. Why else would Barack Obama feel the need to defend himself? Hillary. Why is is that Barack is defending quotes that were taking out of context and Hillary is not? If you recieved 1600+ complaints that voters were being turned away, wouldn’t YOU investigate no matter what the results? Why is your husband in the next primary state ALONE? Is HE running for president? People pleeaasse. DO you trust Hillary to tell you the truth AMERICA? Really? the TRUTH?

It is OK for Obama to say this, but Cuoma is a racist when he says shucking and jiving.

Posted by: Siler | January 23, 2008, 9:19 pm 9:19 pm

Yes, I do trust Hillary to tell the truth. I am a 46 year old Male, and the Clinton presidency were the best years of my life, financially, and in many other ways. I see most of the support for Obama is people 30 and under who were still kids living at home in the Clinton years. Hard to judge how hard it was when you were being taken care of by your parents.

look at how bitterly these two are fighting, like a couple of children. would you want children running the nation in times of war, or worse, taking complete control and hijacking the nation in a bout of childish rage? the republicans are no better. we need better options and the destruction of the two party system that has let ALL of us down!

The Clinton years were RIGHT in the middle of the high tech revolution…THATS why the times were good!

Are you saying that because he is an African American he cant take over as president because there are too many problems in the U. S caused by George Bush. Are you saying a black man cant fix some of these? We need a white woman to do it?
Shoulds we wait until America is back on its feet with relatively fewer problems before we take a chance on a black person to lead. I’ve never been so insulted!

Posted by: Peter Dent | January 23, 2008, 9:35 pm 9:35 pm

The Billary team are kidding themselves if they think Hillary will loose in this race because Obama may pull more of the black vote. Hillary will loose because the Billary team is turning off those over 50 white women that she is so sure of getting. Not many of us remarry and not many of us want to be subjected to her on the news.

Posted by: cjvwise1 | January 23, 2008, 9:57 pm 9:57 pm

Qualifications? hmm, What qualifications did George W have? He was the black sheep of the family. He lost more money than he ever made. He became an owner of a baseball team with no money down. He became Governor of a State with no Qualifications. He bacame the President of these United States of America with no Qualifications, then you guys decided to teach him a lesson and let him fix his mess and you got a worse mess. Now America wants Qualifications.. Is Bush still laughing? All the way to the bank…. lol

Some of us under 50 white women feel the same way…go Obama!

Posted by: Jay,
Correction Jay: most of Obama’s support comes from: 45 and under, College Edu. in the 100,000.00 range. Most of Hillary’s support is Blue collar workers(men&women), HS edu., some blacks, and Hispanics.

Posted by: Former Democrat | January 23, 2008, 10:28 pm 10:28 pm

Jay – I hear you man. I was there during the Clinton years doing quite well too. But college was a fun time in my life too but it doesn’t mean that I can go back. Electing Hillary to the White House doesn’t take us back. Nominating Hillary Clinton will only inspire the GOP, repulse Indis, and split the Democratic party between pro and anti Clinton – essentially assuring 4-8 years of the same divisive political paralysis. That is just not good strategy. Take another look at Senator Obama’s website and see what issues are really at odds with your views. This guys spoke out against the war when it mattered, when it was hard. That speaks volumes to me.

Posted by: EddyNewHope | January 23, 2008, 10:41 pm 10:41 pm

The obama supporters arent going to change their minds. Neither are the Clinton supporters. The whole Clinton strategy was to bring Obama back down to earth . The thing that folks dont understand is that is where he belongs. We are talking about a guy who is taking this HIGH ROAD stance that we who are over 15 years old know is a pile of crud. We understand that obama is taking using a political strategy. So Clinton, Edwards, and the Republicans are all taking turns popping the guys baloon. So what. The scary thing about it is that Senator Obama COMPLAINS so much about it.

Posted by: tom | January 23, 2008, 11:20 pm 11:20 pm

You know, back when I was young, getting started after school in the 90′s, I was thoroughly for the Clintons. They could defile the White House for all I cared and I’d tell anyone with ears that those Clintons could walk on water. It didn’t matter.
Well, now that I’ve grown up a bit and I’ve got children of my own I’ve begun to see the importance of integrity. These past 7 years of non-stop Bush lies have made me rethink the importance of integrity, honesty, and basic decency to the actual functioning of democracy. It’s for this reason that I’m swearing off the Clintons for good. 4-8 more years of Clinton narcissism and complete disdain for honesty as though it were ‘naive’ will damn near kill this country.
Clintons – they really will say anything, do anything. They’ve got 35 years of experience that absolutely proves it.

Bill Clinton was a great president who was hated by the right for no substantive reason. They hated him because he was popular. I still like the guy. I’m voting Hillary because I work for DOD and she is on the Armed Services Committee, plus you get 2 for the price of 1 with Bill as her husband. I don’t know Obama, that means risk. If it’s experience vs. change, I prefer experience.

I think both of them are playing games so they can be more outstanding and that the voters can focus on them.obama is not more innnocent then the clintons and people are falling for it without noticing it. I see it like this :The bad cop is attacking the innocent guy ,Wake up folks this is all politics games.just like a movies,Bill is playing the bad and intelligants cop and Obama is the victim who is being missunderstanding and being treating bad. ..It is working and they are enjoying it and we are the one who is falling for it.The press are giving them lots of attention because that what they doing for living. They also think the african-amercian will fall for this.one is giving a comedy show, marching on the street like dr king did and the other one is speaking of understanding the choses of the black voters.Well give me a break this is all non-sense.Think about this who ever becomes president do you really think they gonna change alot? At least let us focus on the facts and who can help the country not all this non-sense.

“Yes, I do trust Hillary to tell the truth. I am a 46 year old Male, and the Clinton presidency were the best years of my life, financially, and in many other ways.”
-Jay
They were the best years of my life too but Bill is not going to become the president again. Hillary and Bill are NOT one person.

Posted by: Deirdre | January 24, 2008, 9:05 am 9:05 am

A Clinton presidency would mean 4 more years of a polarized do-nothing Congress and a continuation of vehement Red State and Blue State America politics.
Is no one tired of the out-dated campaigning style of a former president and first lady? They are old. They don’t know how to change. Hillary didn’t “find (her) voice” in New Hampshire; she found the same old voice she and the former president have always had: get people to argue and then blame the victim of their distortions for starting it.

Posted by: New England voter | January 24, 2008, 10:01 am 10:01 am

I am an Independent for Obama. If the Democrats are stupid enough to nominate “The Clintons”, then I will take my Independent vote elsewhere. I will not take partial blame for helping them take the office again. We have had the same two families for ever and I find that troubling. In fact I will purposely vote against “The Clintons” and maybe if they lose, someone fresh will emerge in ’12.

I’m a 66 year(older than dirt)white female and I’m not so sure that Hillary would be right for me.
Under her health program I couldn’t afford to get sick until 2017. I’ll be pushing daisies by then. And I quote:
“. . . You know, President Kennedy said in his inauguration that he wanted to have a man on the moon by the end of the decade. Well, I want to have universal health care coverage by the end of my second term.”

At one of Bill Clinton’s appearances in SC on Wednesday, an elderly black man stood up and said “black people are voting for Obama because he’s black. But he can’t win and he will make sure the Republicans win in November.” Clinton showed “concern” while a few others nodded.
After it was over, reporters tried to get the man’s name. He refused to identify himself and left with his BODYGUARD! Now, tell me. How many people attend town hall meetings with bodyguards, especially elderly black men in SC? This guy was a plant by the Clinton campaign used to continue to play the race issue.

Hoodwinking?……YOU LIE (hoodwink us)about YOUR political positions. You COVER UP (bamboozle us) about your unscrupulous business ties, dealings, and fundraising practices in Chicago? You (okey doke us) about your own wife’s professional PAID)relationships with Corporations doing huge volumes of business with “Walmart”?
You SAY ‘you didn’t know what was going on with the Rezko group’… but you certainly got to where you are LARGELY DUE TO THE REZKO RELATIONSHIPS AND THEIR BUSINESS DEALINGS! YOU WERE A LAWYER FOR GOD’S SAKE! OBAMA, YOU DIDN’T “MISS” WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH REZKO… YOU EXPLOITED IT!…….GIVE ME A BREAK!

Obama likes to talk all that “New kind of Politics” stuff but if you look at his record and history you will nothing that is “New”, just the same old stuff. Goggle Tony Rezko and read about Obama in the Chicago papers, learn about the 15 year connection he lied about in the last debate, read about how he used Republican tactics against his fellow Dems to remove them from the ballot. The media tries to make him look like a saint, but he is FAR from that. Tony rezko goes on trial in Federal Court next month for political corruption, that should be interesting

I hope that the voters in South Carolina go to the polls in the greatest of numbers, black, white, latino, asian etc., with the understanding of the historic opportunity before them. They have the opportunity to vote for a genuinely GREAT MAN in SENATOR BARACK OBAMA, a black man who’s intelligence, vision, character serve as an inspiration to ALL AMERICANS. I worked on the Clinton/Gore Campaign in 1992 but can no longer suppor CLINTON STYLE POLITICS which attempts to degenerate American political discourse down to its most base levels.

Posted by: Christopher London | January 24, 2008, 11:56 am 11:56 am

Well, we should use our sence and vision, not our….Obama got his law degree from harvard and he was the president of law affaire school. I think he is genius and his brain is sharp. Can’t he do much better than some ex-presidents? I am sure he can.
I am 62 years old.

Even Hilary wins the White House, the economic during the Bill Clinton’s era won’t be back. One of the reasons attributed to the rosy economic during his era was the windfall of “.com” revolution. No matter who the president was, the economic grew itself. On the other hand, Hilary already claimed Bill would not be in her cabinet when she is the president. So, those who think they vote for Hilary will get Bill should wake up and see the truth. The truth is what we need now is somebody who can unify the country and push the agenda to fix the social security and health care which our parents really need now.

Wow. Even CNN anchors commented last night (during Situation Room) on the racist tone of Obama’s speech.
Its really ugly and disappointing.

Although the 90′s were a fun time, I really don’t get the sense Sen. Clinton is somebody we can trust. Trust and honesty are what differentiate the Bushes and Nixons from the honorable presidents.

The Clintons want a second chance. America wants to turn the page.

I am once gain saddened by the evident generation divide. I have a friend who was once a “Goldwater Girl” (I am in my sixties). Later, after some political maturity set in, she joined me in the “children’s crusade” for Eugene McCarthy.
No one is getting any younger. Everyone is getting older. Having said that, my support for Obama is not race nor gender based. One of the reasons I support him is that I do not want a role-confused former president in the White House. When Hillary Clinton was making some of her first campaign speeches, Bill had a hard time standing still behind her. Now he feels compelled, as do some of our bloggers here, to defend HIS presidency during Hillary’s campaign. He even periodically lets the word “we” slip during campaign speeches.
I loved and hated the Clinton years. He was clearly the most intelligent president we had had for a very long time. He was also the most contentious. His “zipper issues” still haunt their marriage and they were seldom seen together in public until the campaign started. I was pleased to see Hillary Clinton become senator. I privately say that I think that was part of the deal she and her husband made after the whole Lewinsky debacle- that he would help her do that and stay in the background. He can’t do that (and clearly won’t do that) during the election campaign for president. I don’t want “two for the money” this time around.

Obama is attacking because he’s lost the last three primaries/caucuses. He hasn’t won one since Iowa and so apparently he’s decided that he needs to get nasty.

Posted by: cdh | January 24, 2008, 1:07 pm 1:07 pm

Agreed Judith. As someone who also made the journey from Goldwater to McCarthy, I admire Hillary but would rather have Barack in the White House. Think about the message that would send to the rest of the world….

Kathy– I guess you should have volunteered for Obama in Nevada. We were NOT told that at all. I guess he was playing nice and polite in mostly all-White New Hampshire. As soon as he hit NV with people of color, specifically Latinos, his tactics were negative and desperate. You could tell that Obama’s desperation directly stems from his ego and his sense of entitlement. He is crushed that he didn’t win because he actually thinks that he is entitled to be coronated King. Wake up, Kathy. I know that I had to.

Posted by: ginamc | January 24, 2008, 1:37 pm 1:37 pm

I thought Bill was a pretty decent president, but come on! What does that have to do with Hillary? Unless you think that Bill will be running the show behind the scenes the same way people said Hillary did when Bill was President. Seriously though, as far as trust and who is lying and who isn’t, there has never been an honest politician(at least not a successful one). ANYONE who seeks power over the lives of others is not to be trusted.

I have been reading alot about this election and the candicates but we really need to think about one thing and that is we need a president that has the experience and not a preacher that is going to inspire but not get anything done. I’m a white women in her forty’s and if obama had the experience I would vote for him but he does not so that is why I’m voting for Hillary!

Posted by: Retha | January 24, 2008, 2:52 pm 2:52 pm

Judith and Keith — just as in the 60s, you both seem once again confused and caught up by emotions. Seems you are both reactionary in your analysis and justification for supporting Obama. Judith–Bill’s “zipper issues”–what does that mean? Were you one of the ones that were standing in agreement and judgment with Ken Starr and the Republicans on that one too? C’mon it is no one’s business. I just find it odd that the Clintons have been the only ones victimized and smeared endlessly by the REPUBLICANS for decades. And, now it is their fault for the Republicans behavior. That’s right, the Republicans. Think about what you are saying here. These are absurd rationalizations.
Just look at Hillary as an individual. She has a WAY BETTER record than Obama. Look at his Rezco record. It is pathetic. You can rationalize that and his recent behavior since New Hampshire all you want, but the realities remain. He is way weak on Healthcare and other basic issues. Issues that he still will not talk about are delineate with any specificity. I have seen him in person, NV and was NOT impressed with his tactics towards Latinos. Speeches, speeches and NO QUESTIONS FROM THE AUDIENCE. I could only imagine how he would be if were elected for Prez, he’d be so disconnected — as it is, he says he’d surround himself with “other competent individuals.” Please, we have had way, way too much of that already with W. Then where would we be? At least Hillary is calling for transparency in her office. Also, think about this — Obama hasn’t even served 1 term in the Senate. He is immature and sorely lacks experience. Please, wake up. His tactics and the people that he has himself surrounded with– many are former Clinton people. Again, wake up. Obama is behaving despicably in S. Carolina — manipulating Blacks with such racial overtones and language as hoodwinked, bamboozled and that is not exactly positive or presidential. And if that is any indiciation of what his administration would be like — NO THANK YOU.
Electing a totally capable, highly intelligent, highly-competent, hard-working woman to the White House would be sending every bit as much a positive message. PLEASE get out of your emotional state and start thinking rationally — the future of your country depends on it.

Posted by: Monica | January 24, 2008, 3:05 pm 3:05 pm

This is a good message/speech Obama is making here. He is telling the voters, don’t let the lies stop them from going to vote. Don’t believe the hype/lies the Clintons are telling them. There is not one sentence in that speech I find racist. He is giving an uplifting speech about hope, pride, and never give up no matter what people tell you. That was an insprirational speech. If you are talking about the words “hoodwink” and “bamboozle”, those are words many people associate with sleezy politics. Nothing racist about that.
