Obama’s Plane Strikes Parked Plane on Runway
ABC News’ Lisa Stark and Sunlen Miller report: The plane carrying Sen. Barack Obama struck another plane while taxiing at Midway Airport in Chicago early Saturday morning.
At 2:45 a.m. Central Time, the Gulfstream 2 plane that carried Obama, nine other passengers and two crew members struck a parked Cessna 208 general aviation plane, which can carry 10 to 12 passengers.
There was minor damage to the wings of both aircraft, although no one on either of the planes was injured.
Inside Obama’s plane, the hit was so small that no one realized they had clipped the other plane’s wing until someone on the plane, looking out the window, noticed the swipe.
The plane, because it was taxiing and heading to park, was not under the control of air traffic controllers at that point.
Members of Obama’s campaign staff, Secret Service members and two crew members were flying along with the senator.
Before leaving his Las Vegas event that evening, Obama commented that he only had one hour to speak to the crowd, so his pilot wouldn’t get "cut off" and so he wouldn’t get in trouble with his wife. Obama will be in Chicago today, enjoying a prescheduled day off with his family.

There’s no excuse for this, the Obama plane striking a parked plane. Obama campaign needs to tell his pilots to stay awake and watch it! Also, I think Michelle Obama should be more flexible with her husband, knowing ‘what time it is’ in this campaign and how short the window of opportunity is between primaries. Perhaps he just should stayed overnight in places instead of rushing so ‘he doesn’t get in trouble with his wife’ and I feel as though she shouldn’t make him get back if it is too late, prescheduled or not.

I would have a comment but the Obama campaign has decided that their new tact is to call anyone who disagrees with them racist.
Remember folks in the new America, African Americans are not to be criticized under any circumstances that just wouldn’t be culturally sensitive.

Terrible of the Clinton campaign to use provocative racial language just to make ethnicity an issue in this election. Obama has been respectful and not once played the race card.
The Clintons are cold, calculating, divisive, and would surely fire up Republicans.

Would you look at the comments on here? Wow they’re rediculous. First of all Obama spoke very openly about the whole Rezko incident on a tv interview FOREVER ago and the dealing that Obama did with that man was 100% legal and there is no evidence of Barack’s wrong doing AND no favors were granted to Rezko on Obama’s behalf. As for the racial thing call Al Sharpton and complain about that. It’s rediculous and even I could see Bill’s statements although childish were NOT racial. As far as the incident with the plane, accidents happen. I wish people would stop with the critisizing and conspiracy theories. It’s a waste of time. I’m sure everyone can agree it’s starting to get old. It’s a presidential race and the issues are important but it’s funny America is spending more and more time bickering and carrying on about useless information and insulting the candidates then they do on the real issues. I think it’s time to play fair discuss what’s important, and realize we all want the same thing. A GOOD president and everyone is entitled to an opinion on that one.

The surge has defeated AQI and the insurgency. Iraq is close to being that Free democracy capable of sustaining itself and serving as an allie in the terrorist war against America so .. when will he get asked… Mr. Obama is it time to CHANGE, CHANGE, CHANGE course in Iraq or did the Presidents goals succeed and will you as President be able to handle a political hot potatoe like George W. If Hillary was on her way home and her pilot had an accident would she or her family at home wanting to see her be to blame? Is it really Barack’s fault that Al Sharpton pulled out the race card? Would Hillary not be worth voting for if Kerry endorsed her instead of Barack? (she was seeking it too) It doesn’t matter what either of the two of them do the media will make it seem much worse than it is and then people on here will twist and turn it to make the candidate they are NOT voting for look even worse. Again may I remind you people that there are more serious issues than Hillary’s tears or Barack’s pilot. Issues like global warming, education, the economy etc. I have never come on here to see any of that discussed just childish remarks about the opponet. Hopefully no matter who we get they will also focus on the maturity of some Americans.

The pilot was in a hurry. Very unfortunate it happened. I am glad that no one was hurt. It is hard to maneuver a large airplane in close quarters. It will be an expensive repair for both airplanes. Hillary did not put down Martin Luther King, she was just defining the real goals of MLK from the fictitious ones Obama was utilizing. And Hillary Clinton helped in MLK’s movement. From what I remember, MLK wasn’t always hinting at race for his deterrence like Obama’s camp does. MLK was more congenial toward whites and blacks.
Obama should stop accusing and pull himself up. That’s how minorities have prevailed in the past. Give us something tangible: a plan for “change” for one thing. Hillary has presented at least two very specific ones. At a time, arrogance and self-righteousness ends, and action begins.

a couple of posters got it straight…there are NO planes parked on runways. And I recall Obama’s pilot flew him to the wrong airport a while ago; wonder if this is the same one. the pilot seems rather careless. and I assume Obama’s going to cover the repairs to the other plane. Accidents happen, but two plane-related mistakes in the past several months points to either a very careless pilot, or a very clueless person using said careless pilot. Hey, investigative journalists…any curiosity toward checking this out?

All of the idiots who keep complaining about him taking a jet, you do realize campaign funds pay for it, right? he’s worth about 1.3 million. Not THAT much compared to the others. And how else is he supposed to campaign? Just because you’re for better fuel standards in general doesn’t mean you can’t take a plane. ridiculous.

Definitely time for new pilot.

People, let’s not forget…the media picks on whoever has the lead and gets nominated. The are only picking on Hillary right now because she’s an easy target but if Obama gets the nomination they will dig for dirt on him and treat him very badly in the media. The media industry is in such disarray right now that they will do and say anything to get a ratings edge. He will get brutalized in the media because they will take off the kid gloves by that time and start the hard-hitting journalism.

Until any of you know all the details about the aircraft collision, your comments about it is just a bunch of gobbledegook.
If the story is about the collision, then the fact that Obama was aboard the aircraft, is only coincidental. I am glad that no one was injured. The pilot in command at the time is in deep doo doo with the FAA.
Obama seems like a likable sort of a guy unlike Hillary who seems like the wicked witch of the north east.

I know there are many Obama supporters who would like to draw analogies between Obama’s campaign for POTUS and John F. Kennedy but remember one thing…JFK came from a long line of business leaders, politicians, etc…and he himself had combat experience in the military. Obama is a gifted man but doesn’t have the same “type” of experience that JFK had when he became president. Although I wish Obama well in his pursuit of the office I can’t help but think that another term in the US Senate and the added experience gained from that extra term would’ve helped him immensely. He chose to run a bit too soon in my opinion. He should have served another Senate term then went for it.

Anyone who thinks Obama is playing the “race card” is out of their mind. That is the LAST thing he wants to do, because the only way for him to win is to run as a PRESIDENTIAL candidate, not as a BLACK PRESIDENTIAL candidate. Got it?
If you ask me, it is the CLintons trying to make him slip up and play it, because they know that’s the only way to beat him.
Just keep that in mind over the coming weeks.

Why do politics in America make people so stupid? Why does everyone become so hateful and irrational? When will you poeple stop and thing and understand that if we don’t pull together as We the People, and do it fast, this country is doomed. Criminals from both parties, posing as politicians, are using your ignorance against you. The sooner you get that through your head the sooner you can begin to change it.
Posted by: Getting Sick | January 12, 2008, 5:15 pm 5:15 pm
Yep, that’s the strategy, blame everyone else (the other pilot for “cutting him off”)when things go wrong. Anyone that does not believe Oprama’s camp is playing the “race card” is living in a cave. The “race card” always gets played when there is a percieved “tie”. O.J. Simpson was very close to being found guilty in his murder trial; “race card” gets played. Man, I am so sick of the worn out, grotesque “race card”. What would be done without the “race card”? The other side of these events better find the way to neutralize the “race card”. Does anyone ever get tired of playing victim? The recent comment by announcer that was claimed to be “racially charged” about Tiger Woods lacked one important ingredient; intent. Anyone can claim comments are racially charged. Seems no one EVER has to prove it. They call Al Sharpton and it’s suddenly big news. When someone spews their racially insensitive remarks towards me, I simply look them dead in the eye and say something like “oh, you’re not talking to me like that because I am Greek, are you”? They shut up, get a funny look on their hypocritical mug and leave real quick; and I laugh and laugh. This is the land of equal opportunity, nobody says you have to like it.

I wish Senator Obama would ask supporters, opposers, friends, foes, and all others to refrain from interjecting his race into the campaign.
Since he has one parent from a dark-skinned race and one from a light-skinned race, it is clear that he is 50% of each. To call him of “either” race is disingenuous and, frankly, irrelevant.
Of course, it would be nice to see his mother in the campaign some time, right?

What’s of much greater concern than the inadequacies of the candidates and the juvenile comments by our “news” media is the very poor job our NEA dominated education system is performing.
Many of the posted comments are riddled with bad spelling, wrong words used for the meaning intended, and incorrect punctuation. Our Nation is “dumbing down” and our education system is aiding and abetting that dumbing down.
America needs a strong leader who can go over the idiots’ in Congress heads (yeah, like the Great Communicator of the 1980′s) and force a real change. What changes do I suggest? Dump the IRS and replace income tax with a national sales tax, get the Supreme Court out of policy decisions and get back to their intended purpose: rule on the constitutionality of laws passed by Congress. How about setting a standard a wannabe elected “official” needs to meet before he can stand for election? How about restoring the First Amendmend by repealing McCain-Feingold? What about performance measurements and criteria every “educator” must meet to teach his or her subject matter? Why not have a merit system for teachers? Pass a test or go find another job? That’s just for a start. Add in closing the borders to illegal immigrants and start enforcing the law as it pertains to illegals.
Not the President’s job, you say? If it is not, then whose is it? There are many who judge the candidates on their stance on abortion. So you do think that it is the President’s job, to ban abortion? Wake up, he does not make the laws, Congress does. The President, among other duties, is the Executive who enforces laws of the Country.
Before you vote, educate yourself. Don’t vote on emotion, vote on the facts as you understand them. Look at the whole candidate, his record, his achievements, his or her statements compared to his or her actions, past and present.
Ronnie, where are you when we need you? Is there one out there who can fill your shoes?
Frank./

I think all the candidates are being pushed to fly and travel way too much for safety and personal health reasons. We should give them some slack, and they themselves, to travel a little less(safer) and take some personal time to relax and smell the roses. We don’t really need to put them through some kind of physical endurance contest like this is Sparta in modern times. Plus it would add some dignity back into the process.

Attention: ABC reporters. Please don’t report about aviation unless you take the time to learn a little about your subject. Airplanes land and take off on runways, taxi on taxiways, and park on ramps. An airplane would never be parked on a runway unless 1) the aircraft was disabled, or 2) the runway had been closed for an extended period of time. I gather from your story that the Cessna was hit while it was parked on a ramp.

Of course he didn’t for all of you dumb sheep, he wasn’t a senator until 2006. He couldn’t have voted to go to Iraq. That vote was in 2003. He has voted to fund it though and will continue the war if he is elected as will all of the other democrats. I just can’t imagine this empty shell being president. Obama and Clinton are elected to represent the voters of their respective states, not campaign for another political job. They should both resign their current positions if they wish to run for another!
As far as Obama’s house dealing – interesting how a senator making a few thousand per year can purchase a house with a million dollar plus price tag and fly around in a Gulfstream 2 Jet – not a puddle jumper as the story would make it seem. As far as the environment goes, yes, flying around to campaign goes against the current rhetoric, but then, he’s a liberal, you’re supposed to do what he says, not as he does – a la Kennedy – claim to be for alternative energy, as long as it isn’t in my backyard.
I think we can do better for President than either of the inexperienced democrat senators, Obama or Clinton.

I like Ron Paul very much. I very much liked Ronald Reagen. I haven’t seen a politician like Reagen since. I do not like government. Talk about the most wasteful entity on earth. The people create the businesses and jobs. The people make all of the money, even the money that government spends. The government creates nothing. It takes your money and then goes about the business of complicating everybody’s life. The original constitutional mandate for the federal government was to provide for a common defense, the military, and regulate interstate commerce. I would say it has went beyond those things. The federal government isn’t allowed to tax by the constitution. Only the states have that authority. We are still operating under an emergency withholding act to fund WWII. How many people really know that? All of the race baiting and other shenanigans that the politicians create is to distract the masses because god forbid they ever wake up and take their country back, and we all buy right into it, or at least most of the sheep out there do. We need to stop fighting amongst ourselves and start paying attention to what is going on with our country.

This is the problem with people in this country. Look at all the rediculous comments that have absolutely NOTHING to do with the minor ground collision between two aircraft. Why can’t people focus on issues at hand instead of getting off on rediculous political soap boxes?
OK, so two highly experienced pilots accidentally collided with a Cessna 208. Maybe the ramp was packed full of aircraft and they didn’t have a marshaller. Whatever the case, I’m sure they’ll have it repaired.
I’m sure it had nothing to do with politics.

Maybe this was a “CONSIRACY THEORY” type warning to Barack Obama, by those that are threatened that he might win. Can’t even trust your friendly pilot these days.

Safety is priority for all! Keep yourself, family and crew safe!
Obama’08 for President!

DO you consider that maybe with all the flack the Clintons have taken the past few days, this wasn’t just a co-incidental “accident” but an attempt on Obama’s life?….ie Ron Brown???
I wouldn’t put ANYTHING past the Clinton machine. Especially when the first “black” President, Clinton, is being accused of being racially insensitive and had to grovel at the alter of Al Sharpton on Sharpton’s radio program.

I support Ron Paul. I’m black and I am disgusted by the way he has been smeared.

Even though he is a democrat, maybe Obama has the brains to know that Al Gore is a screaming idiot. (which is why he flies private jets; no big deal!!!)

(quote)”total hypocracy …. another liberal flying in a private jet … !”
2 important notes:
(1) The reason we have primaries is that not all party members have the same beliefs. People aren’t clones! In today’s Republican party you have the Religious Right, the Corporate Executives, and the Libertarians. What do they have in common? Not much. And the Democrats were even more fractured than the Republicans, before Bush united the Democrats.
(2) These guys are in a RACE. Time is money. Time is votes. Would you force a liberal NASCAR racer to use a 4 cylinder economy car? Get real.

Read Romano’s comment. A candidate’s plane clips the wing of another place while trying to park and he’s launching some nasty comments about not being able to say what he wants about black people. Sounds like the only person thinking about race is you pal. Obama has never done this. It’s only the Clinton machine which likes to lie and paint it this way. More specifically, it’s Bill Clinton that keeps interjecting race into this race — and only because he finds it politically expedient to do so. It’s quite clever really: Say you can’t say anything about Obama because he’s black and people are overly sensitive (a false claim) in order to be able to say negative things about him later. God, that is so Clintonian.

betsy wetsy said:
“and he wants to be prez??? so his wife can run the country. give me a break..
some president and first lady they would make!”
Aw, c’mon betsy. It worked for Hillary. Haven’t you been counting her numerous references to “we” when speaking of her husband’s accomplishments? (cough…delusional…cough-cough)
And Chasmaniac:
“Its obvious all that leaning to the left caused the plane to veer off and strike the other.” :D
Very funny!!!
John McAdams:
“Rules for Presidential candidates:
1. State your goals and plans to reach your goals.
2. Ignore the other candidates.
Then maybe the american voters will know exactly what you stand for.”
Gee, that sounds like Huckabee logic…
Hey, now!

I know someone who works at that airport and he was told that the pilot got his job because of affirmative action

I assume it was the “left wing” which was hit……

Republicans sure can’t adjust to any new or subtle information can they? Nobody says that you can’t fly if you are liberal. We don’t have much choice after Reagan trashed the alternative energy programs and took the solar panels off the White House. What we (and Obama and Hillary and Edwards) are saying is that there needs to be things such as carbon trading and a new energy policy. But thanks for taking our choices away. It’s what you do best.

If Midway weren’t so crowded, this might never have happened. The Chicago area needs a third airport!! This proves it!

What a Joke..nothing happened, no one hurt and just a lawsuit in the future for the damaged planes!
A very important fact is that the object of this endeavor is to choose a candidate…not their Driving Skills..I JUST HAVE ONE QUESTION..DO THE CANDIDATES BUY CARBON CREDITS for their OIL guzzling travels? Do they but from Gore’s Company of do they one of their own!
Far as i AM CONCERNED..THEY ARE ALL FILTHY RICH AND WANT TO TAKE MORE OF MY MONEY FOR THEIR LIFESTYLES..THEY HAVE MADE THEIR MILLIONS…AND THEY DO NOT WANT ANYONE ELSE TO …How about a new oath of office..I WILL GIVE UP ALL MY MONEY, PERKS AND BENEFITS..I CAN AFFORD THAT THE LITTLE FOLKS CANNOT.
How much money do these folks spend for campaigns? How many people could their millions have helped!

To the poster of this comment:
“rediculous. First of all Obama spoke very openly about the whole Rezko incident on a tv interview FOREVER ago and the dealing that Obama did with that man was 100% legal”
Don’t know how this got on this particular blog as it is off subject. But I do have to comment on it. So you say Obama spoke openly about this and all was 100% legal………..DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK & RESEARCH. The problem is everyone believes whatever they are told and actually know nothing about the situation no matter what candidate we are discussing.

“It looks like Obama’s pilot has about as much experience flying a plane, as Obama has in Washington.”

I couldn’t have said it any better, why is this news any way.

To call this a conspiracy is insane. Thats like saying the crew was high from all the freebase being cooked up in the back of the plane.Sounds to me like the crew wasnt paying attention to what they were supposed to be.

God Bless America.
In how many other countries can we so freely both publicly post such comments and opinions without negative recourse as well as have so many people even caring enough about our democratic process to read all of these opinions, even those that seem ignorant!

This is a horribly researched story.
Posted by: Baj | January 13, 2008, 5:58 pm 5:58 pm
Obama must take care and cannot treat any incident as just an accident. After all he is fighting for a President’s post in a Nation that is notorous is terminating two of its Presidential candidates Martin Luther King and Senator Kennedy and two of its Presidents,Lincoln and JF Kennady.
Posted by: Never_Provoke | January 13, 2008, 11:06 pm 11:06 pm
I was present and witnessed the accident, it wasn’t the pilots fault at all, the ground agent marshalling the plane in was mostly to blame for the pilot running into the parked plane. He barely clipped the wing and Obama’s plane had nearly no damage and flew the next day.

well, as I see it your right how can he get blamed for a plane being crashed, he does not fly the plane. Also we are forgeting wasn’t his mother white?? and his dad black, so he is just as percent he should be able to get both votes base on person not race.

Safety is a pilot’s first and most important responsibility, period. That being said, I know from personal experience the space on the ramp where they are parking his plane (at least where it parks now) is EXTREMELY tight, and I’m surprised (& happy) fender-benders there don’t happen more often. Good job to everyone maneuvering the metal around!
