Romney Demands McCain Apologize For Iraq Claims

ABC News’ John Berman, Bret Hovell, Ursula Fahy and Matt Stuart Report: Campaigning in Florida Saturday, former Gov. Mitt Romney demanded that Sen. John McCain apologize for claiming Romney had proposed a "date for withdrawal" from Iraq.

"Governor Romney wanted to set a date for withdrawal similar to what the democrats are seeking which would have led to a victory by Al Qaeda in my view," McCain said earlier today at a campaign event in Ft. Myers, Fl.

When asked about McCain’s claim while speaking with reporters in Lutz, Fl., Romney said McCain was being "dishonest."

"To say that I have a specific date is simply wrong and is dishonest and he should apologize," Romney argued.

"That is not the case, I’ve never said that," Romney said emphatically, arguing McCain was "trying desperately to change the topic from the economy and trying to get back to Iraq. But to say something that’s not accurate is simply wrong and he knows better."

During an appearance on Good Morning America on April 3, 2007, Romney did express support for private benchmarks and time tables.

When asked by ABC News’ Robin Roberts on "GMA" if he believes there should be a timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq, Romney replied, "Well, there’s no question that the president and Prime Minister al Maliki have to have a series of timetables and milestones that they speak about, but those shouldn’t be for public pronouncement."

Romney has also previously stated he expected a move to a support role in Iraq in 2008. At an event in New Hampshire in September, Romney said,  "I think you’re going to find sometime in ’08 that by virtue of success of the surge militarily, we’ll be able to move to the support role."

Forget a date for withdrawl… Just do it. A leader LEADS, and doesn’t decide to continue a failed foriegn policy. Otherwise you aren’t leading anything. Your just continuing to execute the mistakes of the past administration. Oh and your a sheep who will do what your told. Since when does a president take orders from a General. Last I checked the Exectutive was given the authority for that judgement. Don’t put he blame on the General, he has to follow YOUR orders. LEAD, darn it!!!

Mitt deserves no apology…In fact, McCain deserves an apology from Romney for not admitting that Surge was working until it (NOT ADMITTING) became such a political liability for Mitt. It’s evident that even despite the data supporting McCain’s assertion that the surge WAS working, Mitt didn’t want to admit that McCain was right on t his issue because he knew that would strengthen McCain’s hand on the political front. We can expect more of the same from someone that is more interested in his own political welfare than the lives of our soldiers in harm’s way and the general morale of our country.

You dont know your history, if you think Mitt has wanted a withdrawal you have your head in the sand. I just moved from AZ and I am sorry but Mr. McCain is showing his disparate side.
It is sad that Romney has to release the facts to combat someone trying to hide it.
Governor Romney Criticized Withdrawal Timetables And Instead Talked About Setting Metrics To Measure Progress:
Governor Romney: “You want to have a series of things you want to see accomplished in terms of the strength of the Iraqi military and the Iraqi police and the leadership of the Iraqi government.” (ABC’s “Good Morning America,” 4/3/07)
Governor Romney: “Could you imagine the setting where during the Second World War we said to the Germans, ‘Gee, if we haven’t reached the Rhine by this date why we’ll go home,’ or if we haven’t gotten this accomplished we’ll pull up and leave?” (ABC’s “Good Morning America,” 4/3/07)
Governor Romney Has Warned About Bringing American Troops Home Too Quickly:
Governor Romney: “Well, there’s no question we all want to see our troops home as soon as we can possibly have them home. But we have to recognize that if we bring them home too quickly or in a way which leads to a collapse of the country or perhaps the Iranians grabbing the Shia south or Al-Qaeda playing a dominating role among the Sunnis or a Kurdish population destabilizing the border with Turkey, you could then end up with a regional conflict which would cause Americans to somehow have to get involved again – this time at a much more ugly situation with more casualties.” (“Laura Ingraham Show,” 3/9/07)
Governor Romney: “I Don’t Think We Should Run Our Foreign Policy Based Upon Elections, Election Schedules Or Anything Of That Nature.” “But Mr. Romney said he did not agree with Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, the New York Democrat, that President Bush needed to resolve the war he started before he left office and not hand it off to his successor, as she said while campaigning in Iowa on Sunday. ‘She can do what she likes – but I take exception to her conclusions,’” Mr. Romney said in an interview while campaigning across this state today. ‘I don’t think we should run our foreign policy based upon elections, election schedules or anything of that nature.’” (Adam Nagourney, “Romney: Clinton’s Wrong About Bush,” The New York Times, 1/29/07)
Governor Romney Has Consistently Said There Must Be “Clear Objectives And Milestones”:
Governor Romney Said There Must Be “Clear Objectives And Milestones” In Iraq. “This effort should be combined with clear objectives and milestones for U.S. and Iraqi leaders.” (Romney For President, “Governor Mitt Romney On Iraq,” Press Release, 1/10/07)
President Bush Has Himself Talked About The Importance Of Setting Benchmarks In Iraq:
President Bush: “Iraq’s Leaders Must Continue To Work To Meet The Benchmarks That Have [Been] Set Forward.” “As we help the Iraqis secure their capital, their leaders are also beginning to meet the benchmarks they have laid out for political reconciliation. … There’s been good progress. There’s a lot more work to be done, and Iraq’s leaders must continue to work to meet the benchmarks that have set forward.” (President George W. Bush, Remarks On The Fourth Anniversary Of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Washington, D.C. 3/19/07)
President Bush “Pleased” Iraqi Government “Meeting Benchmarks.” “I was pleased that he’s meeting benchmarks that he had set out for his government. One of the benchmarks was to move Iraqi troops into the city of Baghdad – troops that will be complemented by our own troops. He is meeting those obligations. A second such benchmark is that he would change the rules of engagement so that criminals, regardless of their religion, would be brought to justice in equal fashion. He is meeting that benchmark. Thirdly, he passed a budget of which $10 billion is available for reconstruction. He said he would do that; the budget has been passed, he has met that benchmark.” (President George W. Bush, Remarks Meeting With Ambassador Ryan Crocker, Ambassador-Designee To Iraq, Washington D.C., 2/16/07)

Romney deserves an apology if he was lied about. McCain is worried and is trying desperately to swing the focus back to the war where he thinks he is stronger. So much for straight talk John!

The honorable Senator John McCain has become a nasty, petty, vindictive old man, if he wasn’t already. A shadow of the man who served America proudly. McCain has lost his presidential timber.

If I was McCain I would change the subject too. Do you suppose he has trouble balancing his own checkbook or does he need Greenspan’s book for that too? Come on John. Don’t be afraid to address your weaknesses just admit it! Don’t pull some low life Bill Clinton crap. Admit it. You don’t know anything about the economy. There is no shame in admitting you are weak between the ears. Don’t be afraid.

sounds like a bunch of rush babies throwing a tantrum when they can’t have they’re way. McCain is telling the truth and romney is caught in a lie again. Romney was caught on tape, laughing and telling his phone bank volunteers in Michigan “to tell them anything, promise them anything, just get their vote.” That,s what he is doing now, telling you anything to get your vote and you suckers are falling for it. Whether he gave a date to withdraw or said there should be a date to withdraw dosen’t matter. what matters is that he wants a date or timeline to leave iraq and the terrorist know all they need to to do is wait him out. Just like when Romney promised Michigan voters he could get their jobs back, he’s lyng. Those 20.00 an hour jobs are never coming back, they are gone forever. He might be able to bring in some more 8.00 an hour jobs so his cronies abd bush’s can get richer quicker, but the good jobs are gone forever. Thank you Reagan, thank you George Bush, thank you Mitt Romney. So all you rush babies and ditto heads keep thinking this a great economy and believing in the great conservative dream and while you’re at it don’t forget santa, easter bunny and the tooth fairy. Just remember when bush 2 took office gas was 25.00 a barrell, milk was 1.75 a gallon, wages were 8 to 15 an hour. the only thing taht hasn’t changed is wages, but hey his tax cuts are working great aren’t they!!!

Looks like McCain is desperate and is not fit for the office of the Presidency. He has adopted the tactics of Slick Willy and Hill. He has voted against the tax cuts, is in support of amnesty, and is just another RINO. Perhaps Rush is right this is exactly what the democrats want, someone who can split the party. He should apologize to the Mormon troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and quit playing the religion card as he has from the start of this campaign. He is the ultimate flip flopper on almost every conservative issue. Perhaps the chickens will come home to roost and this angry old man will be put out to pasture and retire amongst his cronies.

Will the real John McCain please stand up? John McCain is not in the same league with Mitt Romney … and he knows it. Now, he’s proving it to the world. He should be forced to PROVE this accusation. There must be a reason why every “real” conservative in America is anti-McCain. He is unfamiliar with the word TRUTH!
