Clinton-Backer: Tough to Criticize Obama Without Being Accused of Playing the Race Card

Lanny Davis — the former White House special counsel to President Bill Clinton, and backer of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY — said on MSNBC’s "Morning Joe" this morning, "It’s very hard to criticize Sen. Obama without being accused of playing the race card."

it’s not tough. It’s impossible. That is why polls overstate obama’s support

Ha…..Lanny Davis a Clinton Apparatchik from the impeachment era makes a comeback! Things must be real bad if Lanny’s showing up.
Dare I say End Times coming?

It takes not more than 5 minutes to releae one”s tax return. Here is the instruction for you Hillary:
1. Open up the email client from the comuter wich has the Tax Return soft-copy. Click to compose a new mail.
2. Type in the email address of CNN, CBS, NBC, or ABC or any news organization.
3. Click the attach button. A selection window will pop-up.
4. select your tax return from the selection box. Click attach.
5. Click the senc button. … DONE.
(Instruction above may slightly differ in different os/version/system…but anyone with minimal email knowlodge (i.e. not a dumb) can figure that out.)
In fact if all the steps are done correctly it takes less than a minute.
If your excuse is that you don”t have that time (5 minutes max) then you must be hiding somthing dangerous that would distract most of the voters from you… I suspect.

It is impossible to attack Sen. Obama if those attacks are personal, which, as has been illustrated by the Clinton campaign in recent days, is the only course they can take since on the merits of his voting record (against the war in Iraq) and his outspoken stance on NAFTA is difficult to counter. By the same token, it should be pointed out that if Sen. Obama attacked Sen. Clinton personally, he would run the risk of being a sexist. Since he attacks her policies, voting record and judgment, he does not. A look at the last five days shows the Clinton camp distributing a photo of Sen. Obama in traditional Somali garb, while the Obama camp has put out fliers on Sen. Clinton’s stance on NAFTA and the holes in her Health Care Plan.

I think Lanny Davis’ comments should have been re-worked to relfect rerality a bit more: “It’s very hard to criticize Sen. Obama when your positions and policies aren’t a great deal different than his.”

Spoken like a true cult member. Obama has no positions other than I agree with Hillary. of course the cult believes Obama is the creator of all positions.

I think Obama has already peeked and the arrow is headed in the down direction. Obamasites and the media act like he’s the immaculate conception or something. I don’t get it. You can’t even say his middle name without being accused of being a racist or slinging muslim hatred. It’s really a sad day for America when the Pesidential contest has turned into an MTV beauty contest. Wake up people Obama is fooling you all. None of the focus group last night could mention one thing that he has done, just like his campaign chrony, but he makes them feel good. I call that…. a drug of choice.

Hey great question. For all the hillary voters and to all republicans how are you going to beat a candidate who has a “following” not voters? His followers have no clue what he is running. Anytime you go after Obama, either the race card STOPS YOU. Or the media goes after you like you were the biggest bigot. There is not win no matter what you ask him or question. You are either a muslim hater.
We are not allowed to use his middle name we cannot question him about his affiliations with certain people. We cannot question him about his record.
We have created a man who has a following not voters. I feel like we are fighting religious following. How do you question a candidate that hides behind the media, or his followers, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton?

Posted by: RACE CARD STOP SIGN | February 27, 2008, 4:00 pm 4:00 pm

If you want my vote this fall:
Why you don’t expose yourself to us for more full scrutiny? Why are we not allowed to use your middle name? Why do we have to treat you like a super star?
I am not allowed to question your background but you want me to vote for you.

Posted by: My vote | February 27, 2008, 4:08 pm 4:08 pm

Absolutely TRUE. Somehow there’s this unspoken message that my support for Hillary (the most qualified candidate) means I am a racist(furthest from the truth). WOW.

Barack Hussain Obama needs to be accountable to his record, his background and his patriotism. He needs to open up a dialogue with the public and not just the stuff on his phony website. I am tired of being told one side of the story by the cable news.
I think You have created a candidate that is getting a free pass to the white house and none of us have questioned or have no clue who this man is. He is an enigma to all of us and ignorance is not good in times like this

Posted by: BHO | February 27, 2008, 4:16 pm 4:16 pm

H Aslan Aslani-Far you are simply repeating media spin on the Obama photo. This photo, if you’d like to check the facts for yourself, was released during Obama’s Africa’s trip in 2006. On Feb 8, 2008, the National Examiner, a tabloid paper, printed this photo along with story of Obama’s Africa’s trip. So, how in God’s name was this photo just released to the Drudge Report? I’ll wait for your response.

What’s the big deal about this middle name ? My dad gave me a middle name which I do not like. I have it in my official name; but while telling people or writing down somewhere I do not offer that info. Perhaps Obama does not like his middle name too. And so he does not use it. Period. If you like Clinton or McCain, vote for them. They are great candidates. But I found my candidate who inspires me and I will stick with him as long as possible.

It’s impossible to criticize Clinton without being accused of playing the gender card. So it looks like they’re even. What’s Lanny’s point?

Actually, it seems no one is allowed to say anything, especially if you’re his opponent! When ever Hillary or her surrogates say anything negative about BO, it’s the fact that they dared to say something about him that becomes the news and not so much what was said. The pundits behave as though the case has been made to bash Hillary for “Heresy” against BO. They create lies to back up their argument, such as “Obama stays positive”. He attacks all the time…..except his attacks are worded as poignant questions, while Hillary’s criticisms are labeled as “negative attacks.” Yeah, we noticed it long before SNL and Hillary called you guys on it. Too bad the masses are not as dumb as the pundits are to think so.

Obama Expess Train: How is Sen. Obama not proud of his heritage? He openly acknowledges his African roots and has spoken quite frankly about his Kenyan father. It would be more than difficult for him to hide his African-American ethnicity, unless you would prefer him in white face. As far as the Anglo Saxon background, his mother is American and white and I’m not certain that necessarily qualifies, but if it does, has he really been hiding it? The greater issue has been, as your comment shows, his birth of a Muslim father. In which case, he changed religious affiliation long ago, much as many people in this nation do. Does that somehow make him a candidate who is hiding something? Remember, this occured long before his Senate race and this campaign, it happened while he was in law school.

Barack “H” Obama is the golden child, that has brilliantly played the card of, if you question me: its because I’m black you scrutinize me, if you go after his islamic roots: you are a narrow minded inconsiderate person, if you ask about his thin record: you are extremely rude and have no clue about this person.
All questions you ask and want to know will never be answered. Its up to the public and research for themselves. My vote is either for Hillary or Mccain.

Nah because if hillary wins ohio ties TX, wins vermont and PR which is what the polls are showing , they will be even in delegates. Then FL and MI take play and Obama is out.
Fact if FL and MI are not counted they lose in Nov, since FL dems are threatening to boycot the nov election if they are not counted. If they count the votes Obama and his followers burn the american flags.
And dont give me thats not fair speach u obama bandwagoner’s or you 3000 college students getting paied to blog for Obama’s campaign. He removed his name from the MI campaign trying to cut off Hillary and it backfired. Obama was also the only person to campaign in FL , releasing videos there for 2 weeks.then caliming he made a mistake. So it’s his own deal on both counts. And why do we want a man who can’t even figure out where to run his ads to direct our foreign policy. Has anyone looked at all the genreals backing clinton as oppose to 2, that are backing Obama? What does that tell u about foreign relations. Heck even the BBC did an article about Barack Hussein rejecting foreign meetings with them.
So yeah this is going to be very interesting.

Mona: That “irony” as you call it is as applicable as pointing out that George W. Bush shares the same name as Curious George and how crazy it is that one of these “George’s” is in fact, curious, while the other completely lacks any kind of curiosity whatsoever.
It’s silly.

I am really scared that Barack Hussein Obama is going to become the next president. I am running as far away from him as I can. Why did MaCain apologize? Barack Hussein is his name, this is ridiculous.
I don’t particularly like MY middle name, but it is in fact MY middle name. Perhaps Barack should change his name if he doesn’t like it. What are we supposed to call him if not his name?

Posted by: Patty | February 27, 2008, 4:45 pm 4:45 pm

@everyone claiming they’re somehow “shocked” that this usage of his middle name is not right:
Each and every one of you know exactly why Cunningham and others are using Hussein the way they are. It’s only to attempt and paint a false picture of Obama as on the side of the extremists, a terrorist, a muslim, etc. A blatant attempt at fanning the flames of ignorance and xenophobia. This is extremely clear since he also inserts “Muhammed” as a non-existant middle name. The only purpose is to spread fear and make innuendos that are patently untrue. You know EXACTLY why this is being done, don’t pretend it’s somehow “PC” or ridiculous.
If McCain’s middle name was “Adolph” and democratic supporters continually emphasized the “Adolph” part and spread other lies that he was a Nazi supporter, would you be posting this garbage about being surprised anyone thinks it’s an issue? Clearly McCain AND Rove himself – yes, Rove himself see this is an issue. Don’t play coy.
“Barack” is a form of a word found in the Bible.
General OMAR Bradley has an Arabic first name!!!
General John Abizaid has an Arabic last name!!!
King Hussein of Jordan is a staunch supporter of the US!
John McCain’s daughter is from Bangladesh!!!
and so on and so on…

I am not voting for a man who is not allowing is to scrutinize him, question him w/o being pummeled to floor, or labeled a racist

Posted by: nonsmearable | February 27, 2008, 4:49 pm 4:49 pm

Here’s the dilemma people are pressuring me to feel; that because I am part African, I should be voting for Obama. That was irritating from the beginning. I never once felt “guilty” going for Hillary. To me, if it’s going to be a question of gender vs. race; I relate to my gender’s experience far more. I was well aware of the low “expectations” for girls long before I knew about the conflicts of race. The way I see it; BO is a different color, but he’s still a MAN. Do you notice in history, it isn’t until one studies United States History that the role of women as leaders becomes extinct. In childhood we are given Betsy Ross as a feminine “news maker”. Think about that one girls……In the United States women were last to own property, have jobs, somewhat equal pay, the right to vote, we even had to fight for the right to have a say over our own body. Even now, we are under constant pressure about OUR bodies. Our country is by far, one of the most sexist in the Western World. In this primary race we are made to feel that our role is not anywhere near as important of a history statement than to have an African American MAN. Hillary, my daughter, my sister, my nieces, my friends and my female students are far too important to be discounted this way. A female President = real change.

Posted by: irma | February 27, 2008, 4:50 pm 4:50 pm

Give me a break. This is just another ridiculous Clinton campaign explanation for their failures. They used just about every slime stunt in the book to reel in Obama including subliminal racial and cultural tactics and they didn’t work.
As a candidate that’s black(biracial) …don’t they understand Obama had to watch his every step so as not to come off as being too black or urbane to his white constituents. Keep in mind, that in the history of our country there has only been 5 black candidates that ever received enough white support to win their statewide offices. This number includes 3 senators and 2 governors. Blacks had always had the burden of being both competent and non-threatening to whites.
In addition, with regard to this contest Obama had to be extra careful not to make any statements that would remotely be perceived as being sexist toward a female candidate. The man had to walk a fine tightrope and he did it brilliantly. Lanny Davis is talking hogwash.

This will impress me:
Show me your affiliations, show me who you were associated with before you became a candidate, show me that as a white, asian, indian etc we are allowed to scrutinize you w/o being questioned
show me that you can be open to all and show me that you are a real candidate that would defend USA
then you will maybe earn my vote

Anyone with a brain knows full well the Obama camp has been using the race bating game ever since New Hampshire. Jesse Jackson Jr. has been threatening black super delegates for a month now. So has Jesse Jackson himself just to name two of a long list in the Obama camp. I’ll vote for Obama when Osama bin laden is the only one left in the race for president.

Not sure what polls some on this site are reading…but RCP shows Obama leading in Vermont and Texas, behind but closing in Ohio, and losing RI.
The problem Hillary has is she needs big wins to pull even in the delegate count. Barack is also winning over super delegates. Rough week for Hillary.

Patti: If you don’t call someone by their middle name, you call them by their first name. How many times was President Nixon addressed as Milhous? Apart from the courtesy of addressing someone by the moniker they chose, Sen. McCain apologized because he understood that the host repeatedly said Barack Hussein Obama (not once, but three times) in a poorly veiled attempt to disparage him or incite some kind of emotional response from the audience. He was not just innocently referring to the candidate. It was a really idiotic attempt to make an issue of the subject. Do you ever recall anyone addressing President Bill Clinton as Jefferson, his middle name?

Wil: I didn’t answer Marlene’s question because I am not Matt Drudge nor do I work for the drudgereport. How do I know how they obtained the photo other than their assertion that it was sent to them by the Clinton camp? That is their assertion. Last night Sen. Clinton had the opportunity to unequivocally state that no one in her campaign was responsible for distributing it. She did not say that. She said, she personally did not know anything about it, which Sen. Obama accepted. However, just because she didn’t know, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. All I have it what has been stated. If Sen. Clinton had said it absolutely did not come from her camp, I would not have made the assertion.

Why should voters vote? The news media elects the president anyway. They should report the facts and give equal time to all the candidates and let the voters decide, but they do not. They spin the stories and analyze the facts to achieve thier desired results.

Posted by: onenibble | February 27, 2008, 5:19 pm 5:19 pm

The photo: again you folks who hate Obama just don’t understand. At no time did Obama create a big stir about the photo itself; the issue was about the tactics of hate behind it. He posed for the photo, it had circulated before, anyone who has followed the guy has seen it.
You have to put it in the context of how it was used–and thanks to lots of your open minded folks on this forum who so ably demonstrate the problem with using it: so many folks who don’t understand and who were ignorant of the facts immediately started jumping to the wrong conclusion and repeating and insisting on long discredited rumors. Remember, Hillary’s biggest supporters are folks who don’t have a lot of education so it is quite likely that a picture like that, without explanation and out of context, will of course create the desired, and completely inaccurate, results.
To whoever the Muslim is who said he wouldn’t vote because Obama repudiated the photo: talk about flimsy arguments! He has never repudiated the photograph, and has never seemed anything other than proud of his African roots. You have fallen into the the trap the Clintons have set for you, and haven’t even tried to climb out.

The folks on this list who are so hateful that they will say or do anything other than look in the mirror and see their true selves.
Fact: Barack Obama has NEVER objected to his middle name being used; as McCain rightfully recognizes, however, the tone of voice used by Cunningham was what was objectionable, because it was used as a pejorative. It was used in an attempt to engender hatred and fear. It was used in an attempt to marginalize and minimize not because of the individual’s politics or platform, but because of his pigment and heritage.
And you folks who are so blind or deaf or self righteous or mean-spirited or afraid or bigoted or racist won’t see the truth of why even McCain was appalled by the way the name was used.
It’s not the name, folks, it the attitude of the person using it, the tone of voice, the implied meaning. And what came out of this guy’s mouth on stage was the sound of ugliness.

When will the shameful media ask BO the tough questions? When will we see real journalism?
Obama says he will “unite” this country and, therefore, shows his ignorance. This is a country built on checks and balances – the fighting is part of the positive tension that works to make this country great.
We don’t need a mediator! We need a LEADER!

Lance D: The link you provided reveals that the contentions are from a dubious, wholly biased source that relies on unsubstantiated allegations. In George Allen’s telling moment there was no question that the words were his own, and for them he paid a price. If these are echoed by Sen. Clinton, which they surely will not be, they would be a horrible blow, but this link is not much more than silly O’Reilly inspired propaganda.

Zombie State: Glad we agree, but I do think it is important to view opinions. Surely you would also agree that no one candidate can actually win the election by themself or even achieve their agendas alone. If you want to support your candidate of choice, you should, in particular now when so much is at stake for the country. To that end, they should all disclose pertinent information as to finances, etc.

I may support Obama, but I don’t hate Hillary. In fact I will probably vote for Hillary if she is nominated and prove her metal against McCain.
So, as a voter questioning whats Hillary hiding in her tax-return is not hate. Neither it’s hateful to ask Obama his wavering position on public financing.
But, the people who are speaking here against Obama are mostly giving hate speech by lying about his faith…from their cave. We still have a lot of BIGOTS in this country… my hope is their number will decrease soon…. and America will get back its lost glory…and exactly that is what Barak can bring….and that is why I support him.

Lou: Actually it was Hillary Clinton who said in last night’s debate that she couldn’t make good on her promise to create 200,000 new jobs in New York because Al Gore wasn’t elected as she thought would happen. Sen. Obama never said such a thing and given the way he has been able to bring so many people together and the courtesy and respect with which he handles the opposition, it is likely he will succeed in this endeavor far more than Hillary Clinton ever could.

Zombie State: Fair enough, but one question…do you think that Sen. Obama, as a candidate, extends every courtesy to his opponent? Do you think that he listens? Do you think that he is willing to explicitly say when he is in agreement and assert himself when he is not? My point is, I think part of the reason why Sen. Obama is treated the way you say is because he extends courtesy and respect to his opponent, the moderators and the general public. The fact that Sen. Clinton may say something that he agrees with, and the fact that he is willing to agree to find commonality is a good thing, no? I mean, repect for others opinions, an acknowledgement of their abilities and the willingness to find common ground are all requisite in being a leader. And for those who point to experience, remember Abraham Lincoln was a one term Congressman before becoming Preisdent, and he is generally considered the greatest leader in this nation’s history. I’m not suggest that Sen. Obama will rise to that level…it is a summit beyong most people’s reach, what I am suggesting is that Sen. Obama does share those qualities of bridging great divides, a gift of oratory, and a willingness to listen, with Lincoln. That is not so bad a starting place after 7 years of certainty that has led to near ruin.

Noha- You sure you’ve voted democrat all your life? Please!! You sound like a baby throwing its toy out of a pram!! ‘If Obama wins I am going to vote McCain’!!
Yeah go ahead after all McCain wants you and your kids(thats if you have any or ever want to have any) serve in Iraq for the next 100 years!! By his own admission he also doesn’t have a clue about the economy!!
I am from the Uk and have been following the elections very closely- One might want to ask why?!! Because unfortunately our prime minsters always tend to follow what ever the American president instructs them to do i.e Blair following Bush into the war in Iraq.
So yes the American Election does matter to us here in the UK as well cause we don’t want anymore Bush like Presidents.
What the Democrats need is to be united not divided(thats what the rebuplicans want)! Both Democratic candidates have similar and better policies than McCain
My Point- Back whoever the nominee is but don’t give us this nonesense that if one loses you are going to vote republican!!
You might as well switch over to the republicans now cause it looks like Obama is going to be the nominee

any good candidate uses whatever advantages they have — Sen CLinton uses women — and Sen Obama by staying above the fray – kind of dares people not to go negative on him — but they do and they will and he handles it with grace–
He was more than solicitous of Sen Clinton at the debate
Lanny Davis went to Yale Law with the Clintons and he is an antique from the fights of the Clinton-Monica period–
He needs to step off the stage along with all the other remnants of that period –
I am of the opinion if Sen Clinton had her own advisors – not her husbands leftovers– she would have been better off
Hillary Clinton was a better candidate than her campaign portrayed — but I don’t feel bad for her because she is better suited and will be a great Senate majority leader – where her policy knowledge can be best used for the people of this country
But for President – there is no doubt Obama is the right choice

THIS IS SO TRUE!!!!!! I believe that is why some of the Mainstream Media are so reluctant to criticize obama or demand that he answer their questions about his “elgibility” to be a candidate for the nomination for President: it is because they are all scared that everyone will scream, “RACIST!!!!”. Oh, but it’s ok to be sexist against Hillary “because THAT is more socially acceptable…….NOT.
John, I am feeling exactly the same way. I, some friends, and my cousin on the West Coast are not going to vote this year if obama is the nominee…..I am hoping that other Hillary-supporters and people that loathe obama will decide to either: 1) not vote 2) write-in Hillary Clinton on the general election ballot, or 3) vote for Nader the Independant.
HOW ABOUT IT, anti-obama people? How do you feel about this? Let’s start a Movement. It’s “Payback Time” for those obama-hate-slingers, and the Media, as well………

To those bloggers who say they will vote for John McCain if Sen. Obama is the Democratic nominee, I have to ask: Are you racist or poor losers? Given the fact that the two candidates themselves have, on several occassions, said their policies are 95% the same and that it really comes down who voters believe will best deliver on these campaign promises, voting for McCain, who has said he would continue the War in Iraq and continue the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, it seems severe to vote for Sen. McCain and the motivations of doing so leave little room for anything other than racism or being poor losers.

Obama’s race is irrelevant to me. Early on in the campaign, I thought hey, here’s a guy I could support some day; but right now he’s barely into his first term and IT”S HILLARY”S TURN!
Now, as the campaign has entered this fierce stage – and his campaign’s tactics belie his messages of hope and change (still not clear on whatit is and what it’s going to look like if he ever became chief executive), I’ll never support him if he succeeds in stealing the nomination from Clinton.
People wake up!
P.S., he showed his true colors last night approximately 10 minutes into the debate when he threw up his hands and looked over at the (male) moderators as if to say “Do you believe this woman?”

Posted by: twinmom48 | February 27, 2008, 6:09 pm 6:09 pm

Yes. Obama and his campaign may continue play this race card against the media during this campaign. Then if Obama gets elected as the U.S. president, the media, congressmen/women, or whoever wants to criticize our president Obama need to be even more careful with his race card or something else when he occupies the executive power.
What about the gender card in Clinton’s hand? Clinton wouldn’t complain as Obama did, and this is why I respect her as a good woman politician. Is this part of the reason why the media treated Mrs. Clinton so badly and unfairly?
Baby who cries more gets more candies, but people may not want to do the same thing when they select their president.

Posted by: ying | February 27, 2008, 6:09 pm 6:09 pm

First off, Obama DID NOT VOTE AGAINST THE WAR. He was not even in the senate. All he did is give a speech about the war, like hundreds of others did.
Secondly, if Obama gets the nomination, I will vote for McCain. I don’t vote for a person blindly. I vote on issues. Obama is a climber not a doer. He has less than three years in national politics and half that time has been spent running for president. He has been cochair of the subcommittee that oversees Nato, yet he has not convened even ONE hearing. He is incompetent when it comes to foreign affairs, saying first he would go into talks with foreign leaders without preconditions, then backtracks and says he would not– there would have to be some intention assessed on that other governemnt first. He relies on Clinton to answer the questions in the debates and then he repeats her answers. He would not outright reject Louis Farrakhan’s support beause he is still pandering to the fraction of the black community that looks up to Farrakhan.
I have tried to like Obama, to feel good about his candidacy. I just simply cannot. Everything about him shows him to be inexperienced, out of his league, deceitful, wishy-washy. Ties to Rezko, Farrakhan who Obama’s own pastor praised to the high heavens, yet Obama has not rejected: these are all very troubling to me. Do I think that Obama is a muslim plant to undermine our country? No. But, at best, he is a rookie who is power hungry and has not earned nor shown to have the ability to lead this country.
I will vote for Hillary. If Obama wins the nomination, I will be campaigning for McCain. At least I know he is a patriot and loves this country.

Posted by: jasoninpa | February 27, 2008, 6:12 pm 6:12 pm

I saw Lanny D’s interview this morning and he was absolutely right! All the furor over the “fairy tale” comment made by Bill Clinton before the SC primary was distorted by the media and exploited by the Obama campaign. Obama and his campaign deliberately used false information to paint the Clinton’s as racist and I found it extremely disturbing considering the Clintons’ previous work for African-Americans in this country and because it was untrue and members of the media knew it. Most of the people who heard about that particular comment, never heard the actual comment. It had nothing to do with race and everything to do with Obama’s changing position regarding the Iraq war. It’s one of the reasons I will not support Obama if he wins the general election. His campaign is not based on unity, it is based on hypocrisy and deception. It’s worse than the same old “politics as usual.”

jasoninpa – some interesting reading for you and any bloggers that have any issue with Barack Obama’s experience:
Senator Obama’s opponent insists that he is too inexperienced to be President of the United States while claiming “35 years of experience” for herself. Hillary Clinton graduated from law school in 1973 some 35 years ago, and her “35 years of experience” since then actually has consisted of 9 years working as a lawyer, 11 years as the wife of the Governor of Arkansas, 8 years as the First Lady of the United States, and for the past 7 years since November 2000 she has served as a US Senator from her adopted state of New York.
Barack Obama graduated from law school in 1991 and returned to his home in Chicago to direct a voter registration drive and work as an attorney representing community organizers working on voting rights cases and on civil rights cases. In 1993 he became a lecturer of constitutional law at the University of Chicago and in 1996 was elected to the Illinois State Senate where he served for 8 years prior to his election to the US Senate in November 2004. Combining his service as an Illinois State Senator and US Senator he has been an elected official responsible to voters for 11 years, while his opponent who claims to have had “35 years of experience” has actually been an elected official responsible to voters for 7 years.
During the 1960 Democratic primary elections then Senator John Kennedy was also told he was too inexperienced to become president, and by such notable members of the “old guard” at the time as Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Adlai Stevenson, and Lyndon Johnson. Kennedy was told to wait his turn! But, of course JFK won the 1960 Democratic primary and went on to defeat Richard Nixon in the general election despite Nixon’s protest that “Kennedy is too inexperienced to be President.” It wasn’t true then about John F. Kennedy and it isn’t true now about Barack Obama.
Abraham Lincoln also did not have much “Washington Experience” prior to becoming President of the United States. In 1834 at age 25 Abe Lincoln won election to the Illinois state legislature where he served a total of 8 years from 1834-1842 during which time he taught himself law and was admitted to the bar. In 1847 he was elected to US House of Representatives serving a single term from 1847-1849 before returning to private law practice in Illinois. On October 16, 1854 a 45 year old Abraham Lincoln delivered a powerful speech against Slavery in Peoria, Illinois and in 1858 was elected to the US Senate, just 2 years before being elected President of the United States in 1860. Not much prior “Washington Experience” for “Honest Abe” but he sure made a great President. Could it be that having sound judgment and strong character are a lot more important to being a great President of the United States than is the amount of one’s prior “Washington Experience?”
Senator Obama has served in Washington long enough to understand what needs to be changed and unlike his opponent he has already begun making changes by refusing to accept money from lobbyists and political action committees. He is proving that being beholden to such money peddlers is not necessary. He raises money for his campaign directly from the people to whom he is accountable, people like you and me.

I think that when Obama is up against McCain, if that is the ticket, McCains superior foreign policy experience is truly going to show Obama to be a total rookie. And I don’t think that the media is going to continue to let Obama have such a free pass, because the Republicans, unlike Clinton’s campaign, don’t have to worry about dividing the party. Republicans (both parties really) thrive off of tearing into the other. I really feel that Obama is going to sink hard.
Obama’s “momentum” cannot hold up. He has been so seriously hyped up that there comes a point sooner than later where people are going to start to wake up from their drunken state and their going to have a hangover. Time for inspection will come in, and they will find that there is little substance to Obama. Obama has been marketed by his campaign and by the media as a brand. You might buy a product that looks good, take it home and then realize it’s crap. I have no doubt that’s the case with Obama.

Roberspa- Most of the national polls show that Obama will beat McCain the general elections. But Clinton will not!

Posted by: Kofiharrr | February 27, 2008, 6:23 pm 6:23 pm

The one good thing about Obama being the nominee is that McCain will wipe him out, and then in four years when McCain is a disaster, we will get Clinton as the nominee and as the president. Then we can begin to repair our country.
Obama is the emperor who had no clothes, and the man running the curtain is David Axelrod.
Buyers remorse is going to sink in on Obama fast. If he were to become president (which I don’t think he will), people are going to be asking “where’s the change, where’s the change?” Only to find all the promises to have been nonsense.

If you want to talk about discrediting a woman’s rights activist that dared to stand up in China, you better be prepared, because you will be chewed up like Obama is being devoured by the smart America public. Obama in last night’s debate talked about 20yrs of public experience. How difficult is it to subtract 1991 from 2008 and say it is 17 years? Who is he trying to impress with the lies?
Matt

Posted by: MattOhio | February 27, 2008, 6:27 pm 6:27 pm

Most of the national polls show him beating McCain doesnt mean much. Why? Because in the general election, it is about winning states. We saw this in Fl in 2000 where the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Bush, thus giving him the delegates from FL. In state-to-state matchups, Clinton would actually win more delegates than McCain, whereas Obama would not. Obama has won more delegates in the primaries by and large because republicans for one have been voting for Obama just to get rid of Clinton in open primaries. Also, like in WA state, we saw that caucuses favor him against Clinton because he won by a large margin in the WA caucus but in that same state’s primary he won by only three. Also, in FL and MI were counted, they would be about tied in delegates right now. Obama did, by the way, have ads running in FL, while Clinton did not. And it was the Republican led legislature in FL that changed the date of the primary, thus causing the Democratic 2 million voters to be disenfranchised.
Lastly, those polls showing which candidate beats which at this point are outright silly. It’s actually a wonder that Obama is not showing as leading McCain by a significantly wider margin, given all the media coverage of Obama, and all of the lack of scrutiny he has had. The Republicans are going to tear into that lead super fast. Mark my word.

MattOhio – Matt I don’t dispute Hilary hasn’t done her bit and even Obama said himself last night that she would be a good nominee, However at this point in time as he quite rightly put it ‘He would be the better nominee’
I just think that whatever the outcome is there if very little difference between them in policies and democratics from both factions need to rally behind whoever the winner is in order to beat the Republicans to the White house.

Haslan,
Your guy is made for short, shallow, “feel good” statements/opinions. Hillary knows how to defend the specifics – really the heart of her plans. That’s a debate. Of course he wanted to move on; but his sexist manner really showed through in that moment.
Usually, it’s just his arrogance I can’t stand.

That is so true! ESPECIALLY since the MSM wholly supports his racist card playing. They just edit a few videos and voilà!! Amazingly, Bill and Hill, who have, for their entire lives, fought for Civil Rights, have become RACISTS and of course, the AA community falls for it all.
As if MAGICALLY, these 2 people who have helped them, fought for them, supported them all their living days, overnight became racists? They just wanted/needed an excuse to jump on the Mr. Hope bandwagon and the MSM accommodated them by editing 2 videos from SC. It’s all total crap. And the MOST hysterical thing I see in all this is the schmoozing and stroking of EGOS…….the MSM polls tell us that the HIGHLY EDUCATED, SMARTER people vote for Mr. Hope. Bwahahahahahahahaha! They are being played like a fiddle and are too stupid to know it. Smart? Highly Educated? I think not. If they’re ignorant enough to believe the Clintons are racists, I suggest those so-called Highly Educated Mr. Hope supporters get a REFUND from their schools.
Mr. Hope and his shills are going to play the race card one too many times and sooner or later, it will come back to bite them in the *** and I can’t wait until it does.

Seriously, folks, the unseen and unrealized victim in all of the political circus this election year has got to be the Civil Rights Movement.
I am a white, middle-aged professional woman, and I very much admire Dr. Martin Luther King and his work bringing together blacks and whites. This hateful, divisive political campaign year may further divide the Movement that Dr. King and others had worked so hard to achieve years ago: I am personally appalled by many, many things in this campaign, including the “bullying” that goes on by blacks toward black super-delegates, trying to get them to switch their vote from Hillary Clinton to obama “because they need to be true to their race”, as well as the denouncement of what Bill Clinton said, after he, himself, has worked for years to further the black-cause. It is dispicable the way these people are being treated—–do you think that Bill Clinton actually said what he said in the way he said it, after all the years he has championed blacks? It is the way his words were twisted by the obama campaign that led to the backlash against Bill Clinton.
I, myself, now have to take a step back and analyze for myself if I will actively participate in Civil Rights Movement activities in the near future. Some hurtful and dastardly things have gone in in this political campaign, and I KNOW I am not the only one that feels this way…….

Posted by: Unity | February 27, 2008, 7:45 pm 7:45 pm

Well, I think it’s tough on the media and Barack facing a woman; even a comment like “you’re likable enough” can get you in trouble. With any minority candidate, whether through race or gender, every comment will be seen through that lens. I think it’s unfair to say that you can’t win unless you say something about Barack’s race–why not hit him on policy? Why not win on your own merits? Why does this man even whine about not being able to compete against a black man? Sad, sad, sad. They just haven’t had a very good campaign–and truthfully, Clinton has had much more time to accumulate dirt. Surprisingly, Obama hasn’t flung much at her.

Posted by: Jerome | February 27, 2008, 7:58 pm 7:58 pm

This is absolutely true. It is incredibly unfortunate since at the dawn of this entire campaign process, none of the candidates were hoping to play the race or gender card. Then came the Iowa caucuses and debates. The media first implied that the men were “ganging up” on Hillary during the debates. So the American viewers started to say it was true. Since then, we listened to every word trying to find masked and obvious versions of sexism.
Then, in New Hampshire, the same happened in terms of racist remarks. Later, in S.C., Pres. Clinton said that Obama’s thoughts on the Iraq war were a fairy tale and the media spun it to the Clintons being racists and calling Obama’s run a fairy tale–which was never said. The media has tried at every chance since then to make it look as if any comment is a racist comment.
Unfortunately, in today’s society, sexist comments are still allowed. They should be avoided as much as racist remarks. But what shouldn’t be avoided is the right and freedom of our press to actually question candidates. Instead, the media relentlessly questions and scrutinizes everything about Hillary, McCain, and Huckabee. However, this same level of scrutiny has not been applied to Obama.
As a Democrat, I want to be excited for both candidates. However, the media and the many “fans” have justly or unjustly biased me against Obama. I want to know that my President has been taking to task for every decision and promise made. Currently, this has not happened and that is why I am not sure he is best for the job.

Posted by: hopeful for Hill | February 27, 2008, 8:11 pm 8:11 pm

This is the saddest of all. Our country has come a long way. And for AA’s it has been an all too difficult road that has not yet reached fruition. For the first time in our history, we have an opportunity to make history with two candidates who represent people who have been fighting for decades for equality.
For me, the choice is easy, maybe even bias. We so often choose those whom we feel represent us. When these two candidates emerged, I really had to think and research the records of both. What we already know about Hillary, we know. She hasn’t always been right or even forthright, but there is no question about her committment to our country. Unfortunatly, there is not yet enough known about Obama. And, the questions about who he is cannot be properly answered prior to the nomination. I personally do not appreciate those whom Obama has choosen to associate himself with, those he has choosen as his mentors and the radical ties they represent. It’s my sincerest hope that this election does not undo all the progress that has been made for both women and AA’s….but it’s not looking good.
Obama is black and white, so who does he really represent? I’ll close with this analogy.
Your on your lunch break at the mall. You see a smashing outfit that you know will look great on you. You buy it, take it home, cut off all the tags, throw away the reciept and on saturday night you put it on…..only to find that it looks terrible in all the wrong places. And now your stuck. Don’t you wish you would have taken the time to make sure it fit properly?

Lo and Behold! What many of us have been saying that the South Carolina “joke” of a primary is that Bill and Hillary Clinton did not play the race card. That would not have been a wise thing for them to do in the first place, and it would have been beneath their years of work for equality. Now, after all the media have skewered the Clintons at every turn, and after blacks have gone ballistic for Obama for a race card played by the Obama camp and the media,
“morning JOE” admits that Bill Clinton’s words were twisted and falsely reported. Joe admits that Bill Clinton did not call Obama a fairytale; he called the media’s lack of scrutiny of Obama’s votes on Iraq a fairytale. All this time, the Clintons have been demonized again and again. Ted Kennedy told Bill Clinton to butt out. Why? Because he was already preening and propping up Obama to be the nominee. It is obvious that the northeastern senators from Massachusetts do not like southern men (Carter, Clinton, Gore). They think they are smarter and they want us to nominate their candidate. No, thank you. While the major networks (CNN, MSNBC, FOX) and others have had a field day bashing the Clintons and given Obama a free ride while promoting him, the rest of us are fed up. We saw this lie and other lies from the networks from the very beginning. It took morning Joe to admit that colossal error! So much for the free press!

Hillary and Bill have covered theirselves in mud with their own actions, and inaction, over the years. They did not need Obama for that LOL. Get real he was the first President accused of rape and the first to be caught having sex in the Oval office and Hillary stayed with him. Want to talk mud?

Posted by: Sam | February 27, 2008, 9:39 pm 9:39 pm

FURTHERMORE: I fully understand John Lewis’ decision to back Obama now. He, as well as other blacks, were supporting Hillary when South Carolina exploded. His state of Georgia (fueled with anger/pride from the black vote) voted overwhelmingly for Obama. He has been under extreme pressure to endorse now rather than waiting for the role of superdelegates at the Convention. Will the blacks in his state punish him the next time he runs? Some black minister in Atlanta is already planning to run against him. You talk about a racial divide! I see a schism regarding race that will probably last a good while. Many of us, and obviously the Clintons, are deeply hurt by this race. Blacks, as well as whites, will have some scars after this. Ask any of the blacks who support Hillary.

Posted by: georgia | February 27, 2008, 9:42 pm 9:42 pm

RealB58, Obama did not walk a tightrope. In fact the cameras were more than happy to pick up his dropped lines that were meant to send Hillary and a lot of females on the defensive. In fact the media was more than happy to help him ATTACK Hillary and constantly. Even now with the publics outcry about it they still defend him and they are being defensive, desperate and attacking Hillary for having a problem with them defending him. Come out into the light and face reality. It’s okay to notice the facts.

Posted by: Imahillady | February 27, 2008, 9:45 pm 9:45 pm

Okay. John Lewis has succumbed to the wishes of racists. If put before GOD and asked who does he feel is more qualified to be President….I think most of us know the answer. The segment of the black community that kicked the Clintons to the curb to vote for a “black” man who has done nothing for them have really hurt the racial relations in this Country.I suppose those that support Obama also think OJ is innocent.

I don’t agree with you on this issue. You can criticize someone without appearing to offend that individual. This is called constructive criticism. The Presidential election is very important, because it concerns the life of every American. Let’s use a simple, but important part of our lives to draw a distinction. Let us assume a patient wants to undergo a life saving surgery. Now, this patient is given a choice of two surgeons to perform this operation. One is a “rookie” and one is “well known”. Initially everyone goes to the “well known” surgeon, but as time goes by, the “well known” surgeon makes mistakes and the staff and patients leave for various reasons. As these patients and staff leave they try the “rookie” and guess what? He’s a lot better than the “well known” doctor and everyone is impressed.
Well this is the story of Obama and Clinton. Obama never had an easy ride because from day one, the odds where stacked against him and he beat the odds. If race was a factor that favors people, why didn’t Bill Richardson win states with a lot of Hispanic people? Why didn’t John Edwards get a free ride based on his race? Also if race was a factor in this race then Obama’s 11-0 straight wins wouldn’t have materialized.

Pat,
I do hope you are succesful in pointing people in the correct direction. This guy has been fighting for the middle class for years! And he is perfect with his points. Race be damned! He’s concerned with the country……Of the people, by the people and for the people.
One of the few journalist’s who is willing to speak the unpopular truth about the “Sad State of Affiars” this coutry is heading into.
The USA is only 235 years old (give or take a couple as a girl would say) It has been said that our values will fail, our system is flawed, and our beliefs will crumble and blow away like dust in the wind……WELL, I don’t accept that analogy. I will fight for evey god given right that those before me have died for. I covet their sacrifices and hold them in my heart.
These are the reasons I hold my hand over my heart during the “pledge”. These are the reasons I applaude those who “salute”. These are the reasons I find it comforting, to see our “leaders” wear the USA flag pin on their lapel.
History will judge if our beliefs are correct, that all MEN (and Women) are created equal, that WE have nothing to fear but fear itself, and not just some, but ALL “HAVE A DREAM”.
Most of us are ordinary, not extrodinay. But, we must be mindful of of whom we chose to catipulte to “greatness”.

Well with Nader running now he will take some of those male Independence voters away from Obama now ….In which help McCain and he will still carry the conservative? The sad part all the Clinton voters going to be in play now? I don’t see all of them going Obama way…
Hillary was the best shot espically with Nader running now, Obama going to lose the white male voters now, split the Latino and probably lose the women votes now…. Hey still get his 90% African America….
There going to be allot of new Rep voters this year now…. Obama already slipping behind McCain now…. McCain picking up all those Clinton voters now….
REP in office for another 4 years…. I be voting for REP first time in my life…. Not voting for the cult movement with no experience!!!!!

How come Barack Obama was known as “Barry” by all of his friends and family but when he went into politics he suddenly became “Barack”?

Posted by: navymom | February 28, 2008, 1:15 am 1:15 am

to those who see through the artificial halo that’s been planted over obama’s head, bravo!
btw, jasoninpa, agree re national polls meaningless for the general election, but it is interesting that today mccain polled ahead of saint obama! this is while the media lovefest is still going on and the young people with their notoriously short attention spans haven’t yet moved on to the next fad, so it is interesting.

navymom, the name thing is interesting, isn’t it? how convenient! btw, the proper spelling for his name is baraq. somehow i don’t think that would go over so well, as it makes clear that his name (and lineage) is actually arab. perhaps if his parents had spelled his name that way, he’d still be going by barry.

You the media made this about race. You trying so hard not to see this man win. Simply ridiculous. Thats why hes winning. You own prejudice will get him in the White House simply because America is tired of media and other entities using whatever tactics to get your way. What makes you think that your self interests or candidates can do it any better than anyone else?

Sad but true story in Ohio, about blacks who support Hillary are being harassed, ridicules, and threatened. Racism is alive and well.

Matt OHIO
Good try on the Pakistan answer. But it ain’t working. Here’s one reason why – From the mouth of HRC at a rally in Belpre OH-IO:
“We have a war against al Qaeda and the Taliban who attacked us. And the masterminds of that attack are still at large, and we’re not winning,” Clinton told the packed auditorium in Belpre.
“We have to put our best resources in against those who attack the United States. No one can attack us with impunity. They have to be brought to justice. And that means wiping them out. Because until we do, we will remain at risk.”
See this is exactly the type of stunt Romney would pull i.e., criticizing your opponent for a view you hold or held last week. And that’s why so many people don’t like him. So at the debate the other night that what she was doing, i.e., trying to scare your typical weak kneed dem into thinking BHO was gonna invade another country ending in “Stan.” But BHO don’t wanna invade another Stan. He, just like HRC and everyone else with a pulse, wants Justice to visit UBL. So your gal Hill pulled a Romney. And pullin a Romney is lame. That’s all I’m saying.
Now if you wanna say, Ol Hills raised the issue to point out that she can out-nuance BHO, fine. Hills says bring UBL to justice and BHO says strike him. One phrasing, according to HRC, is apparently better than the other.
So you got yourself a new slogan of the day. Meet me in Ohio for a battle of Nuance!

One of Britain’s most influential black figures today accused Barack Obama of cynically exploiting America’s racial divide and gave warning that he could prolong, rather than heal the rift.

Posted by: bryan | February 28, 2008, 9:10 am 9:10 am

The media never (at least appears) to be unwilling to investigate nor report the rumor that the race card message came from the Obama’s campaign, yet they carried the news about Obama’s fury over a picture!
I now have to read more news from the International community because they are more balanced by attacking or praising both candidates instead of reading about the news from the US media.
Obama continues to fuel the division of the black vs. other race by threatening and pressuring other black fellows to support him under ‘you don’t want to stand in the way of a black man…’. What does the election have anything to do with color or gender? we are supposed to pick the best possible candidate to lead us in the next 4 years. The US media makes it more like this is a game of American Idol.

A senior official from the Obama campaign contacted Michael Wilson, Canadian ambassador to the United States, and told him that the Senator was going to harshly criticize NAFTA during his race against Clinton in Ohio, but added: “Don’t worry… it’s just campaign rhetoric…Don’t take it seriously”.
Just words? Barack lies to Ohio about NAFTA

It’s sad but it’s true. Anyone who dares to even ask any question about Obama’s lack of accomplishments, is labeled as a racist. He is running for the top office in this country, Why shouldn’t he be closely scrutinzed ? If he is as honest and open as he claims to be, then he should have no problems answering hard questions.
He keeps saying that he is against the Iraq war, then why does he keep voting to fund the war that he is “opposed” to ?
Why doesn’t he answer questions about his 17 year relationship with Syrian slumlord Rezko ?
If Obama is the nominee, then I will donate and campaign for Sen McCain.

Everybody has the right to criticize Obama, especially Lanny Davis the for ever Clintons’ supporter. But it has to be about substance i.e issues and not about race or other personal attacks. Obama has accomplished a lot, he is very well educated, qualified and has the right skills to bring people together -Unifier- and not a divider. He has a good reputation and is clean as Joe Biden said once.

It is really sad to say, but a big part of this race is about race. The Clintons were accused of injecting the race card, but they did not. Their words talking about honoring Martin Luther King and a President’s help in getting civil rights legislation passed were twisted by the media and the Obama camp. The criticism of the media’s lack of scrutiny of Obama’s Iraq voting record (the same as Hillary’s) was twisted by the media and the Obama camp to mean Obama was called a fairytale.
Now, a superdelegate, John Lewis, who has always supported Hillary, has bowed to the pressure to give his vote to Obama. A black minister in Atlanta is already planning to run against him. Do you think the black population he represents will support him then? There are a multitude of issues where the race issue is front and center, but everyone walks on eggshells afraid to discuss anything for fear of a backlash. I am proud of how far we have come in civil rights for all, even though we have a long way to go. A case in point, people are not afraid to talk about the gender of candidates being an important area for bias. It is accepted. Obama may as well get used to the terrain. He can dish it out against Hillary, but he needs to quit crying foul if someone mentions race. Race has split this campaign already, and there is still a long way to go.

As an African, I would dearly love to have an African American as the president. However, I look at Obama and, although I hear good words, I see a blank page. One of his strongest points is that he opposed the Iraq war. It is true he did but the media and political pundits should have educated voters on the fact that HE WAS NOT IN THE SENATE at the time so we do not know how he would have voted! If we go by his records in the Illinois legislature, he would have most probably voted “present” ie neither against the war nor for it. Another point the media should have highlighted is how has he voted on issues related to the war???? But no one talks about that – he is obviously a media favorite. When JFK ran for the presidency, his faith was mentioned and discussed. No problem then. Now mentioning Hussein is taboo and discussing the fact that a candidate’s parents are muslims is politically incorrect. Everyone should take pride in his/her name and religious ancestry. But no one can talk about this man without being accused of something so we are all left with a blank page…..at least until the republicans start firing on all fronts and the “swift boat” adverts start rolling on TV. Obama is brilliant, inspiring and has potential for greatness but, like good wine, he needs time to mature. It is sad that he is being hyped up so that when he is brought down, he can only drop into political oblivion!

Obama makes my heart flutter and my knees go weak. I think I’ll vote for him.

All I know is that liberals should rejoice when the three candidates are a leftish Republican and two lefty Democrats. If they could drop their obsession with a war that is finally taking a turn for the better (especially for Iraqis) they might well throw themselves a party! They’ve already won.

As an Italian woman I support Barrack because I believe he can handle the job as president with dignity and stability. I’m ashamed of how Hillary is portraying women with her fake debate graciousness only to scream with finger wagging the following day then to Blame the media for her failing campaign. Is this how she’ll act as president? No Thanks!

“Clinton-Backer: Tough to Criticize Obama Without Being Accused of Playing the Race Card” lol
AND THAT IS NOT PLAYING THE “RACE CARD”?
Typical hypocrisy coming out of the Classless Clintons camp!
Why not CRITICIZE OBAMA ON THE ISSUES?
Especially when the Clintons have so much PERSONAL BAGGAGE, they should be the last one to be getting personal!
Monica Lewinski was ALSO in the White House and worked more closely under the President than Hilary. Does that make Monica qualified to run for Presidency? lol

It’s not about race so much as it is about woman being 2nd class. The press is all over Obama while they dump on Clinton. Im a man but if i was a woman, i would be tickd off big time. Sadly to say, men in this country are not secure in there manhood to vote for a woman who is smater than most of them. I have faith in Texas and Ohio. not to go for what the press is doing by building up Obama and dumping on Clinton.

May the “bright light” of Obama reveal it’s consequential dark shadow of his inexperience to the electorial masses.
He projects the same optimism and hope to his party that George Bush did to his.
I will go with the candidate that exposes all of their scars and mistakes before I go for the delivery of a snake oil salesmen selling hope.
We as as a collective
group of individuals have a remarkable short memory.

6/20/08 I watched Barack’s comments about the opposition going after him for being young, inexperienced, having a funny name, and the reminder that he is Black. Let them try the first 3 but don’t dignify the last one with an acknowledgemen Everyone who can see, sees that he is black – I felt that was a needless remark that could make the matter worse. My prayers are with you – we really need you!!!
