Clinton’$ Ca$h Woe$

Senior staffers of the Clinton campaign have "voluntarily chosen to work without pay this month," our colleague Kate Snow reports.

This, even though she loaned her campaign "$5 million from my money," to help keep her campaign afloat.

Clinton’s doing well in the polls, and she had a good Super Tuesday, but these are not signs of strength.  Though, to be fair, Mike Huckabee and John McCain have had senior staffers go without pay (as had Rudy Giuliani) and, of course, Mitt Romney self-finances his campaign to the tune of more than $40 mil, so far.

Thoughts?

I think its definitely a sign of weakness, but as much as anything its also a starting gun in a fundraising race as both campaigns try to use this news to their advantage.
At the end of the day, it will matter only insofar as it impacts advertising and field staff, which seems to be in obamas favor starting out.

How many $5M checks do they want to write? They better figure that out, because Obama has raised $5 million online since the close of polls yesterday.

Posted by: David | February 6, 2008, 9:42 pm 9:42 pm

I don’t have a problem with the Clinton campaign borrowing $5M from HRC.
But I do seem to remember that She touts 35 years of public service experience. According to her she been fighting for our rights, children’s rights and women’s rights since graduating from law school at age 25.
So my question is how do you squirrel that much $ working in public service so that $5M is chump change?
Public service and volunteer work must have paid handsomely for her.

Didn’t Bill just make $ 20 million on his dealing with Ron Burkle? I thought ABC actually posted all candidates net worth and the Clinton were worth 41 million. I think that was before the 20 million that Bill received recently. Then Bill helped a Canadian connect up with a Mid-East person. The Canadian got the deal and Bills foundation and library received $ 130 million total. Why isn’t Hillary compassionate enough to pay her own workers? She obbiously has the money. Why aren’t the laws followed? There is a minimum wage, overtime etc that should be followed, right??? We need to have a Justice Dept investigation and government hearings. She could cry during the hearing and Americans would certainly vote for her (unless she cackled again and that would turn some people against her). More than there already is.

HILLARY ROCKS!!! She will be able to recoup those and more donations will start coming. THe reason why Obama has the money is because of O as in Oprah. Without Oprah, Obama is N(None).

Posted by: Very Independent | February 6, 2008, 10:13 pm 10:13 pm

Politico reports her worth is @ $60 Million. I feel sorry for the people of Kazakhstan to see their hard earned money being personally loaned by Hillary to her own campaign.
I’m quite sure she didn’t make $60 Mil in her 35 years of fighting for change in the private and public sector. What a joke.

Posted by: Ryan | February 6, 2008, 10:15 pm 10:15 pm

That means, personally, HILLARY has more liquid assets than OBAMA. Without OPRAH, OBAMA no dinero. Muy mal.

Her having a good Super Tuesday is a sign of strength. She stayed ahead of Obama – a tough rival!

Oprah is limited in how much she can give.
Obama’s money has come from a wide variety of sources, but especially people fed up with the way government is doing business under the Me Generation of Bush/Clinton.
No matter the numerous references to Obama being Muslim or people putting his middle name in capital letters or talking about a black conspiracy, the Me Generation will soon be swept out of the presidency (Thank God)

Need to call some friends to send some money to her campaign. She deserves the support from us, the real people.

Posted by: Ken | February 6, 2008, 10:39 pm 10:39 pm

OPRAH used her influence to raise money for OBAMA like what she did in California but still HILLARY prevailed even with flip-flopping Ted Kennedy support for OBAMA. You cannot beat the CLINTON MACHINE! eh!

Posted by: Very Independent | February 6, 2008, 10:42 pm 10:42 pm

Some people have claimed that Oprah is the source of Obama’s fundraising success. This isn’t true at all. While it is true that Oprah has a large female following, polls show that women still tend to follow HRC. How then does Oprah’s support help Obama’s fundraising? It doesn’t really, Obama has been successful raising funds because of donations from folks like me. I’m a white male (currently registered Republican) from the South and not an Oprah fan. However after following all the candidates, I fell in love with Obama as a politician. So have millions of other Americans and we, not Oprah, are the reason for his successful fundraising campaign. Regarding HRC’s campaign loan, she had not choice but to disclose it and try to put a positive spin on it. Candidates are required to disclose their financial contributions. HRC’s campaign is smart enough to realize that if they didn’t disclose the bail out first, then Obama’s camp certainly would and they would definitely make it look like a sign of weakness in the HRC campaign. With the news of HRC’s donation, it seems as though Obama’s campaign continues to move forward with a message of Hope, while HRC’s campaign is showing signs of Despair.

Posted by: Jerry | February 6, 2008, 10:44 pm 10:44 pm

Whatever you say, again, you cannot beat the CLINTON MACHINE, you can combine OPRAH and the KENNEDYs influence but HILLARY will always prevail. Besides, we need a President who can start on day one not another experiment like George W. Bush. Look what’s happening right now, economy is so bad, lots of job loss and foreclosure. America needs a strong leader right now for it to recover not a rookie.

As long as Hillary loses it’s OK by me.

Posted by: Scott | February 7, 2008, 12:55 am 12:55 am

Using one’s own money is always “smart”. Boy it worked great for Romney. If Hillary, with Bill at her side and most of the establishment, so much name recognition cannot put Obama away on super Tuesday but loses states 13-8 then she is doomed. Look ahead to next seven contests. She will losde all of them while hoping to make a stand in TC and OH, a Rudy 08 strategy. She is done.

Posted by: Adnan | February 7, 2008, 1:12 am 1:12 am

since polls closed on feb 5th, obama has received over $6.2 million in donations alone. thats insane.

Posted by: joe | February 7, 2008, 1:27 am 1:27 am

I’ve given $850 to Obama so far. I started with $50 a month and when we tied after Super Tuesday I smelt blood. Now I hear Hillary had to donate her own funds, I want to bankrupt her right out of this race!!! I’ve never donated to a campaign or phone banked or put stickers and signs on my truck. I’m 40, white, and an idealist. Obama is an idealist and thinks like me, coming up with the ideal solution and then working to get to as close to that as possible. His ability to raise funds is a testament to the excitement that he generates. If you do your homework you’ll find Obama is far more authentic and actually believes in what he’s saying. He is substantially further left then his opponent which means a better deal for the people, you and me!!
Please everyone donate to Obama, even if its $5, be part of history!!!

Posted by: Truth-is-Gold | February 7, 2008, 1:35 am 1:35 am

as far as the international community is concerned – you guys have a win win – so long as the republicans dont get in.
you should do away with this crapola, and put hilary as president and obama as vice – that way you have the best of all situations – and keep the idiots that want to blow you up in check as they will definately crap themselves with Hillary in the white house!!!
about time for this change too – america is supposed to be the home of the free!

Posted by: roboz | February 7, 2008, 1:37 am 1:37 am

(First and foremost let me say that I am a Hillary supporter)
Don’t you all see what’s going to happen? Everytime she has looked vulnerable she has SURGED ahead. 10 bucks says over the next few days she’s going to raise a LOT of money.

Posted by: AT | February 7, 2008, 2:04 am 2:04 am

Another question is , how did obama get the money to buy a $2.4 million house?
to be sure, that’s not public service either. And, neither he nor his wife were born into money.

Posted by: vick | February 7, 2008, 2:31 am 2:31 am

This is a ploy to raise money! It worked I gave OBAMA $100 more today. BTW he bought his house with the proceeds from his two books. Look it up.

Posted by: disabledOIFvet | February 7, 2008, 3:46 am 3:46 am

I looked online and Hillary has more working cash than Obama (it even shows her 5M loan to her campaign). It’s another ploy – like the crying stuff before every primary now – it worked once so why not do it every time. She is an embarrassment to women – I do NOT want her representing me as a woman.
By the way, Very Independent – Obama was matching Hillary’s big corporate fundraising well before Oprah endorsed him and she hasn’t given a penny to his campaign. Don’t you read the news at all – Obama’s money comes from hundred’s of thousands of individuals giving 10, 50, whatever they can – his campaign is financed by everyday PEOPLE.

I hope most progressive citizens in America will now help Hillary in raising the money to enable her to continue her campaign. She has over many years worked to make America a more progressive society for all citizens, she has a proven track record.Obama is the new kid on the the block,he is yet to pay his dues and prove that he is comitted by actions rather than words to real change. His time will come in the future if he proves to be worthy.
Now history presents the United States with its chance too elect their first female President. Do you have the courage to make history?.The world is watching!.

Concerning Fundraising and the Clintons:
Hillary Clinton, A Chinese Fund-Raiser, And Straw-Man Donors Inexplicably Linked
A poor family is making big donations to Hillary Clinton… and their donations just happen to track with the donations of a wealthy Chinese businessman.
One of the biggest sources of political donations to Hillary Rodham Clinton is a tiny, lime-green bungalow that lies under the flight path from San Francisco International Airport.
Six members of the Paw family, each listing the house at 41 Shelbourne Ave. as their residence, have donated a combined $45,000 to the Democratic senator from New York since 2005, for her presidential campaign, her Senate re-election last year and her political action committee. In all, the six Paws have donated a total of $200,000 to Democratic candidates since 2005, election records show.
That total ranks the house with residences in Greenwich, Conn., and Manhattan’s Upper East Side among the top addresses to donate to the Democratic presidential front-runner over the past two years, according to an analysis by The Wall Street Journal of donations listed with the Federal Election Commission.
It isn’t obvious how the Paw family is able to afford such political largess. Records show they own a gift shop and live in a 1,280-square-foot house that they recently refinanced for $270,000. William Paw, the 64-year-old head of the household, is a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service who earns about $49,000 a year, according to a union representative. Alice Paw, also 64, is a homemaker. The couple’s grown children have jobs ranging from account manager at a software company to “attendance liaison” at a local public high school. One is listed on campaign records as an executive at a mutual fund.
The Paws’ political donations closely track donations made by Norman Hsu, a wealthy New York businessman in the apparel industry who once listed the Paw home as his address, according to public records. Mr. Hsu is one of the top fund-raisers for Mrs. Clinton’s presidential campaign. He has hosted or co-hosted some of her most prominent money-raising events.
People who answered the phone and the door at the Paws’ residence declined requests for comment last week. In an email last night, one of the Paws’ sons, Winkle, said he had sometimes been asked by Mr. Hsu to make contributions, and sometimes he himself had asked family members to donate. But he added: “I have been fortunate in my investments and all of my contributions have been my money.”
He’s got $45,000 laying around and decides to continue living at home with mom and dad instead of getting his own apartment?

The Clinton way to fundraise – sell influence.
The 1996 United States campaign finance controversy was an alleged effort by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to influence domestic American politics prior to and during the Clinton administration and also involved the fund-raising practices of the administration itself.

It is a sign of weakeness no doubt. I think time is running against Clintons campaign. It is a victory for BARACK OBAMA.YES, WE CAN. YES, WE CAN generatte huge amount of money for this gentleman to win the nomination and then proceed to General Election and finally beat the Republican and become the president of the United States. May God bless America.

To all of you claiming Obama gets his money from Oprah, that’s bogus. All you are doing is trying to excuse your insecurities.
Obama’s money comes from his book sales and speaking engagements. He only has about $1 million in personal worth. Being a senator is a 6 figure income as well. He knew his expected worth would balloon if he ran for Prez, so the $1.6 million house was a good investment. His books are selling like demo CDs.
Obama had to be convinced by others to run because he thought he was too new. That is why he thrives with small online donations. MANY people wanted his candidacy. This is why he has gathered over $6 million online since Feb 5th polls closed, while Hillary has to “loan” herself $5 million. Her cash cows are tapped out.
Accept it. He’ll win the next 3 states. Soon you’ll read about people leaving her camp for his.

5,000,000 Now we understand why she cries. With many more people donating $ 10.00 to Obama we will give her a run for her money and a final embarassment by capturing the democratic nomination.

No matter which candidate you support, this story points out THE biggest problem behind the never-ending campaigning: money. Each and every candidate has to continuously engage in fund-raising to remain competitive. Some are more successful than others; all have run into rough spots. Intrinsic to our immensely fallible political system is the candidates’ constant hunger and need for cash, so much so that the Presidency may as well have a price tag on it. I can foresee Drew Carey someday saying “Now up for bids on the ‘Price Is Right,’ the office of the President of the United States. May I have your opening bids?”

Looks like TNR has got the goods on HRC today in an article titled “With Friends Like These …”.
But this type of behavior is well known.

I’m pretty sure the Clinton campaign released this information about the personal loan, so that her supporters will participate in her latest $3M online campaign. They are such cynical spinmasters.

Before I just wanted Hillary to win and I was just giving her my vote. Now I’m going to FIGHT for her and give her my heart and as much money as I can. I already gave today and will give more Friday!!!!
I BELIEVE in her and WE need her!! We cant roll the dice with someone who just gives you some fancy speech. My children need better then that. Hillary, I will fight with you!!!! Obama thinks he has all your votes, but you cant get his. Well, Obama..you will NEVER have my vote. Its not that easy!!!
HILLARY 08!!!!

Those of you that see me know I do not support any lib usually, but if it came down to Obama or Hilary I would go for Hilary, mainly because she has more knowledge not necessarily experience of the Presidency. If it is McCain v hilary, I am contemplating voting for Hilary.
As far as Obama, he is made up from the press, how many other 1/3 term senator do you know of?? Scary if he wins, that means that people do not think for themselves!

This is totally poor planning. She underestimated the power of Obama. She thought, (as she did when she voted for Iraq war) that everything will be over on Super Tuesday.
People, cannt you see this woman is lacking the sense of judgement!

Barack will be eaten alive and no amount of folks voting race is going to overcome the landslide. Clear Channel already ran its Hillary bombs a long time ago. Its old news. It just doesn’t hold up now all these years later. But Barack is new blood, a new victim. And the Dems just keep sending lambs to the slaughter. That is part of the reason why we have Super Delegates. They are established folks that have some sense to know that sometimes the wave is a wave pond, not an ocean.

Well you got that wrong. Her staff OFFERED to go without pay but they are being paid.

Posted by: Eric | February 8, 2008, 12:23 am 12:23 am

I can’t believe you poor slobs fell for her little game. All she is doing is playing “Poor Hillary” again…this time with your money…really making fools out of you…laughing all the way to the bank.
Her sob stories just don’t work. Oh and if you don’t think so look back over the past few weeks:
1. Tears in New Hampshire and Chicago
2. Supporters in the audience fainting…either her or Chelsea come to their aid
3. Hecklers:
(a) Heckler with putdowns to women about ironing shirts to rally women’s vote
(b) Heckler in Colorado on 9/11 and Bill just happened to know exactly how many muslims died on 9/11. Good one…play on patriotism and show muslim community they are loved too
Now just expect to see more fainting fans, more hecklers, low on campaign funds, plus any other stupid trick that always works on her followers.
Oh Lord, I feel another crying spell coming on…something on Katrina no doubt.

Ok…all you fools who got taken with this money contest of Hillary’s…do you know she sells/rents out lists of her campaign contributors? What a deal…more money into the campaign couffers and more names to sell to the junk mail brokers.
I would keep an eye out for ID theft if I were you…but them I’m not. I contributed to Obama’s campaign.
