Deval Patrick’s Timeline Doesn’t Mesh with Reality

Speaking to the New York Times Sunday, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick attempted to excuse his friend Sen. Barack Obama’s lifting of part of his October 2006 "Just words" speech.

“In a telephone interview on Sunday, Mr. Patrick said that he and Mr. Obama first talked about the attacks from their respective rivals last summer, when Mrs. Clinton was raising questions about Mr. Obama’s experience, and that they discussed them again last week," the Times’ Jeff Zeleny wrote. "Patrick said he told Mr. Obama that he should respond to the criticism, and he shared language from his campaign with Mr. Obama’s speechwriters.”

But Obama was quoted using Patrick’s language before the Summer of 2007.

"’We hold these truths to be self-evident, all men are created equal.’ Those are just words," Obama was quoted as saying in a March 19, 2007 New Republic story. " ‘I have a dream.’ Just words.”

So….the claim that Patrick an Obama "first" discussed this last Summer does not make sense.

It should also be noted that in addition to the "Yes We Can" slogan that Obama used in 2004, Patrick used in 2006, and Obama uses today, other language from the two clients of political guru David Axelrod has come from both men’s mouths.

To wit:

Patrick in June 2006, at the Massachusetts Democratic party convention:  "I am not asking anybody to take a chance on me. I am asking you to take a chance on your own aspirations."

Obama one year later, as quoted in USA Today: "I am not asking anyone to take a chance on me. I am asking you to take a chance on your own aspirations."

Just words?

- jpt

UPDATE: Some folks have pointed out that when Obama borrowed the line on voting your aspirations in Portsmouth, NH, on December 21, 2007, he footnoted Patrick, saying, "Don’t vote your fears, I’m stealing this line from my buddy, Deval Patrick, who stole a bunch of lines from me when he ran for the governorship, but it`s the right one. Don`t vote your fears, vote your aspirations."

But in my original post, I wasn’t referring to that quote.

I was referring to a month before, in November 2007, when Obama according to news coverage stood on the steps of the Clarendon County Courthouse in Manning, S.C., and, according to USA Today, said:

"Now, I’ve heard that some folks aren’t sure America is ready for an African-American president, so let me be clear," he told his mostly black audience. "I never would have begun this campaign if I weren’t confident I could win. But you see, I am not asking anyone to take a chance on me. I am asking you to take a chance on your own aspirations."

Don’t believe me OR USA Today? Fine.

Check out the Obama website where they have the speech posted — no credit to Deval Patrick is given:

"Now, I’ve heard that some folks aren’t sure America is ready for an African-American president, so let me be clear: I never would have begun this campaign if I weren’t confident I could win. But you see, I am not asking anyone to take a chance on me. I am asking you to take a chance on your own aspirations."

You guys are ridiculous. If this is the harshest accusation you can come up with against Obama, you’re desperate. Both Hillary and Obama are democrats for crying out loud. Maybe you should devote your time to looking at flaws in what the REPUBLICANS say.

And look how well Patrick has done as Mass gov. and how many Mass voters voted Obama. Experience does mattter qwhen the job one is applying for is President of the United States.
If it’s just words, make them your own, not someone else’s recycled rhetoric.
Even his book was taken from one of his preachers speeches.
This man’s candidacy is a hollow shell or a theatrical set, the script of the play used once already in Mass. The Republicans will rip him to shreds.

Sticks and stones will break your bones…but this coverage on “words” is just getting ridiculous. Get over it. Cover something with some substance.
If this is all the Clinton camp can harp on…it’s a good sign Obama will whip the Republicans good in November. If he can get past Bill Clinton’s dirty political games, the rest will be a piece of cake.

You guys must understand that: how many times we have seen Hillary reading speeches?
They are speeches written for her by other people. Can we generalise that she can’t manage to write her own speeches?.
Do you also understand that they are people known as “Speech Writers” for President? Should we say now that all Presidents are empty head or what? Guys, think, think, thiiiiiink!!! and do not blame Obama for nothing.

Lets see Rezko ring a bell.Really hes got plenty to hide. As to the tax return issue really Clinton does not need to release them until she actually wins the nomination.Voting is about looking for a candidate that is able to do the job the best and he is not it.How come the great unifier refuses to compromise on Fla and Michigan.Political rules trump the constitution since when.

Posted by: girlinvt | February 19, 2008, 12:14 pm 12:14 pm

Wow, the Clinton supporters here all sound pretty desperate. So Patrick was off a bit on the timing, big deal. Obviously we all know that he and Barack are good friends and have spent time together on and off the campaign trail. Obama already said he should have credited Patrick for using those lines in his speech.
Hillary needs to avoid being the first candidate in 16 years not to release her tax returns. She also needs to release the names of the donors to the Clinton Library and Clinton Foundation. She should also explain why she is taking money from federal lobbyists and PACs.
Those are news stories. Any interest in covering them, ABC?

President Clinton, at one of his many public appearances to support Deval Patrick’s historic campaign for Governor of Massachusetts said this about the Republican Party: “When they start the nasty attacks, you know their running scared because they are losing.”
Perhaps we should apply his words to his wife’s campaign. She’s my Wellesley sister, but I am becoming more and more uneasy with her and her campaign each passing day.

This is just evidence of what is wrong with the news media. Instead of talking about stuff that matters, they focus on really pointless fake controversies like this one manufactured by the Clinton campaign.

Obama the Poser for President!!!!! The reality is if no one brought this to America’s attention, everyone would still think WOW he is such a great speaker,NOT. First of all the words alone do not belong to either one of them, we all know they come from great men who came before them. The issue here is Obama not taking just a few words but a whole segment of the governor’s speech. Now he is saying Hillary quotes him as well,” Yes we can,” belongs to Cesar Chavez. One line and a whole segment of a speech are two very different things.

Hillary’s health care plan forces everyone to buy insurance, even if you can’t afford it. Is that the best we can do for families struggling with high health care costs?
Hillary’s health care plan forces everyone to buy insurance, even if you can’t afford it… and you pay a penalty if you don’t.
The way Hillary Clinton’s health care plan covers everyone is to have the government force uninsured people to buy insurance, even if they can’t afford it.
“…forcing those who cannot afford health insurance to buy it through mandates…punishing those who don’t fall in line with fines.”
- The Daily Iowan, December 21, 2007
Punishing families who can’t afford health care to begin with just doesn’t make sense.
Barack Obama believes that it’s not that people don’t want health care, it’s that they can’t afford it.
Barack Obama believes Americans who don’t have health care coverage desperately want it; they just can’t afford to pay for it. That’s why the Obama plan covers every American by reducing costs more than Hillary Clinton’s, saving the typical family up to $2,500 per year.
Bill Clinton’s own Secretary of Labor, Robert Reich, wrote, “I’ve compared the two plans in detail…But in my view Obama’s would insure more people, not fewer, than HRC’s.” – Robert Reich, December 3, 2007
The Obama Health Care Plan:
Offers health care coverage for all Americans similar to that of members of Congress, and subsidies to help those who cannot afford it.
Reduces insurance costs more than Hillary’s plan, including capping insurance company profits in places where they have taken advantage of people.
Saves the typical family up to $2,500 per year.
Read the entire plan at BarackObama.com.
Barack Obama. Health care we can afford. Change we can believe in. THIS IS A MAILER OBAMA MAILED OUT THAT QUOTES THE DAILY IOWAN AS A SOURCE FOR DISSING HILLARYS HEALTH PLAN.APPARENTLY HE COULDNT GET ANYTHING OTHER THAN A COLLEGE STUDENT NEWSPAPER TO QUOTE FOR HIM. DONT BELIEVE ME GOOGLE THE DAILY IOWAN CHECK IT OUT.

Much ado about nothing.
When Hillary started with the “pretty words are empty” I had the same thought, that Obama should quote MLK and Lincoln and Jefferson…
Would Obama be accused of stealing my response ?
If you want to get picky, ol Hillary has used hubby Bills old speeches !
The very idea, for Hillary to suggest that thoughtful words are meaningless is a bigger issue. Winning elections and solving problems by using cunning tricks is not an admirable trait. She might rty working on her words and writing….

It’s better to know Obama is dishonest now, than later if he was to be nominated. He has really done nothing as far as his past experience and his WORDS are what people are excited about. So Words are NOT just words. Who is this guy? If he has written 2 books, why did he use someone elses words?

Dear Mr Tapper,
Most of your postings are good but sometime you try to stretch lot of insignificant stuff. As you pointed out, the two are good friends and share the same political guru.
WHY DIDN’T THE HILARY CAMP MADE THEESE ASSERTIONS OF PLAGIARISM THE FIRST TIME OBAMA USED THOSE LINES? I guess at the time it was just a simple coronation that was going to happen. So why mention the fact that an insignificant candidate was “lifting” lines from friends.
I often find myself repeating lines from my friends when I like them. What’s the big deal: you’ve been on this issue for three days now.

Umm, this article makes no sense. They didn’t first talk last summer – they “first talked ABOUT THE ATTACKS” last summer. They’ve been friends and involved in each other’s campaigns for years. He was talking specifically about this phrasing that was being criticized yesterday.

“But you know in the end, don’t vote your fears. I’m stealing this line from my buddy (Massachusetts Gov.) Deval Patrick who stole a whole bunch of lines from me when he ran for the governorship, but it’s the right one, don’t vote your fears, vote your aspirations. Vote what you believe.”

Funny, how the obama supporters will turn around and throw the blame on Hillary. Maybe amazing is the word.
Your obama is a typical politician who will do as every other politician as a presidential candiate. He will cheat, lie and dump on his rivals – just like EVERY OTHER politician. Your obama is just a HUMAN – unfortunately you supportes have given him a halo, wings and free reign on everything. He actually brings up the racist issue and turns right around and blames this on Bill Clinton and you foolish people jump on this like it was sent down from God to Moses. You supporters have obama actually believing all this stuff that he is a deity. I watched him briefly last night and take a really close look – he is arrogant and condensending – just turn off the sound and watch his facial expressions and his eye movements – look how arrogant he is. But you supporters will never believe this because you love to hate Hillary Clinton and you ACTUALLT BELIEVE whatever obama wants you to beleive. I would call this type of influence from obama DANGEROUS. If he can influence you to believe what he wants you to beleive – what can he influence you do against the USA?

Posted by: Lou | February 19, 2008, 12:50 pm 12:50 pm

If any of you former Obama supporters are disenchanted with the fact that Obama is another unoriginal politician without original rhetoric (although you have to admit he’s fairly good with the delivery of said unoriginal rhetoric) take heart, Biden was able to come back and make a second run even after being disgraced for his copycatting of another politician. I say Obama in 2012!!

One other thought, Deval Patrick for Vice-President in 2012!! That way there will be absolutely no confusion about what the campaign is saying because it will be exactly the same thing coming out of two mouths.

Hey JT,
There’s a good question from Sinsouza. So Obama is borrowing great speeches from his friend,Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick. His friend was elected on those great speeches, what is Patrick’s performance rating as the governor of Massachusetts? Also so let’s see Obama had both Kennedy, Kerry and Patrick in his camp from Massachusetts and people still voted for Hillary?
Real Change is a woman in the White House

Posted by: mona | February 19, 2008, 12:56 pm 12:56 pm

The real story here people is not two friends sharing effective lines, it’s that both candidacies – Patrick’s and Obama’s were packaged by their shared media svengali, David Axelrod. He’s quoted in the New York Times Magazine while watching Patrick’s inaugeration last year with words to the effect of: This is nice but wouldn’t it be great if we could land the presidency.
Both candidates and campaigns are similar: both came seemingly out of nowhere with rhetoric that took the place of solid resumes. Patrick has proved to be a major disappointment; fortunately, Massachusetts is not the world stage and the stakes smaller. I remain concerned that we cannot afford to invest in someone so untested on the strength of a media driven campaign.
Copying speeches is only a small part of this issue. The media needs to report on the ties between Obama and Axelrod that go back 15 years. This period covers those years in the state senate where he recorded all those “present” votes. I’m sure that Axelrod deduced it’s easier to fabricate a persona than spend time defending a substantive record.

People, you can’t steal if it is given to you.
Although after reading many of these posts I think that perhaps some of you have had your brains stolen.
Obama writes most of his own stuff. He is up 20 hour days and all over the country. He is a brillant orator. Hillary has speeches written she is also up 20 hour days. She is not a brillant orator.
To level the playing field her camp yells that Obama used someone else’s words…If you can’t compete with the messanger try and kill the message…
This has been reported on before and it is a non story. Let’s all look over Hillary’s stuff and see how much she lifted from others shall we? Oh, wait…her campaign said they wouldn’t sign the pledge that she hadn’t lifted a phrase or two…but that didn’t matter since she wasn’t running on the premise of hope anyway.
Gee, folks, this is way on to petty to be taking up any press or cyber ink.
When I heard what she said about “just words” I looked at my husband and said without ever having heard Deval Patrick, “oh, so “I have a dream” or “all men are created equal” are just words too I guess”….other people can come to similar thoughts without it being a vast right wing conspiracy….
Petty and grasping at straws….negative and devisive….that is the Clinton campaign. I have been a dem my entire life, but I will not vote for Clinton if she is the nominee…won’t happen and you can quote me on that without attribution.

Not to offend anyone, all the comments here clearly show why Obama supporters are more educated than Clinton’s. Do people really understand what “plagiarism” means? If Obama was all “stolen” words, how can he (with a tenth of experience in the political arena) put up a more effective campaign compared to someone with three decades of established political dynasty (including a presidency)? Think people. Think. If you can’t manage your campain for two years, how are you going to manage the whole country for four years?

If his zealous sheep-like supporters will take one sober moment to reflect, they”ll shake off the spell of demagoguery that Obama has cast, aided by the unquestioning media that fabricated him. Some say he’’s riding on nothing but great oratory. Today we learn it’’s great plagiarized oratory. I”ll go a step further–he’’s a second-rate speaker with meaningless lines that insult our intelligence, who stutters his way through debates and interviews. Great orator? The new JFK?? This is such a non-issue. The original quotes (FDR, King, etc.) are so well known, there’s no need for attribution. The timeline above proves that from 2004 to today, they have been sharing ideas and campaign phrases/talking points since they have run similar campaigns. When asked to name an inspiring figure, would anyone fault someone for saying Dr. King (it’s certainly not a very original answer); it’s still a valid point to make. When someone says words don’t matter, the obvious response is to demonstrate words that have mattered. Case closed, let’s move on to actual issues

Posted by: Kevin | February 19, 2008, 1:10 pm 1:10 pm

I forgot to add that in this election year, we’re electing the President of the United State. Nowhere on the primary ballots or later, in the November election, will we see the name of David Axelrod, the force behind his success. I also forgot to mention that Obama’s campaign manager is Axelrod’s partner in his media firm.
Try to get hold of the article that was written in the late 80′s that refers to him as a hatchet man. Also, check out last year’s New York Times Magazine article that focuses on this man’s loyalties (or lack thereof). For someone who is now agressively seeking John Edwards endorsement he has some surprisingly unkind – yet illuminating comments about Edward’s candidacy in 2004. Illuminating in the sense that you can infer that he thinks Obama is the perfect vessel for him to test his strategy for “placing” one of his clients in the White House.

Posted by: twinmom48 | February 19, 2008, 1:11 pm 1:11 pm

Deval Patrick actually told Obama to use the phrase “just words”… which are the only original words used by Deval Patrick.
What a joke. Clinton is so desperate. Unfortunately for her, about 75% of the population can stand the Clintons anymore.
Time to move on, folks.

WestCoastMessenger, if Joe Scarborough wanted to ensure a McCain victory in November, he’d be rooting for Hillary to be our nominee.
And I find your “I say Obama in 2012″ line to be confusing… are you saying that if Hillary’s the nominee, she’s bound to lose, or are you saying that if Hillary’s elected in 2008, her presidency will be so godawful that she won’t be able able to run for a second term in 2012?
Obama 2008. And that’s final. :-)

But with hillary and all her distortions and dishonesty, you think she should be queen of the white house. You people are unbelievable!

This last minute bit of desperation on the part of Clinton is truly pathetic to watch. If Democrats respond to this in their voting, they are truly an aimless herd of easily manipulated sheep. I’m a Republican, so it’s no skin off of my nose, but wow, is this how anyone with any character would want to win an election?

Hillary Clinton used a ghost writer to write her book (Barbara Feinman). HRC then refused to give the woman any credit for her writing. I don’t much fault HRC, except that she lied when she said she wrote the entire book herself in longhand!
But these are small matters and it is a shame some people would seek to distract us by focusing on such trivial minutia when issues of real importance abound.

How come we never hear about:
Hillary’s refusal to release her tax return?
Hillary’s avid support for Bush’s idiotic war?
Hillary’s support of a misguided and belligerent foreign policy?
Hillary government mandated payments you’ll be forced to cough up for her health care “plan”?
Hillary’s ABSURD claim to 35 years of leadership experience, starting when she was 25 years old?
Disenfranchisement in the NY primary?
Bill Clintons smarmy backroom Uranium dealings with shady Khazak dictators?
THE LIST GOES ON.

If he is “fudging” on inconsequential, insignificant matters such as being a copycat (pretty childish actually) what other truths is he taking liberties with. Man looks, speaks and behaves with such arrogance, I predict it will be his downfall. Humility and lack of pretense are most important in the political arena. Add this to his wife’s misspeaking over the weekend about this being the first time in her adult life being proud of her country – oh my goodness – some people just don’t know when to put a cork in it.

All this so-called plagiarism and recycled Resko dribble is such a waste of cyberpace when we have so many real and pressing issues to consider in the coming months. Hello, does anyone care about the American people? Or are some of us too busy trying to look like chief inspectors in charge at the expense of truth, thought or just plain common sense? I think the Clintons were done a disservice during the Whitewater/Lewinsky investigation. Have we learned nothing?

Do I sense a tinge of jealousy around the success of a career woman? Her success has always been in the public eye. Why would you want to try to tear it down?

You Obama speech defenders aren’t getting it. Obama’s CLAIM TO FAME is his speeches. That’s all most people are going by, since heaven knows there is not much else. When you’re a front runner for President BECAUSE of your speeches, then this IS sort of a big deal. But defending the guy who walks on water is amusing.

Alas, Obama is a fraud. However, Hillary is a bigger fraud by blatently misrepresenting her own experience as a leader. The practice of law is copying on a grand scale. Rember JFK’s statement, “when it is not necessary to change it is necessary not to change.” That was “copied” from Lincoln’s ststement, “if you like that sort of thing that’s the sort of thing you will like.” Obama utilizes many of the Reagan tactics of optimism and a “vision” for a better future. Is that a fraud? You bet it is, but at least it is a better alternative than political party warfare that fits poorly in our two party political system. We have a winner take all system, not a parlimintary system that requires compromise in Congress brcause our executive branch is seperate from our legislative branch. So I say excuse Obama’s copying “fraud” and eschew petty partisanship politics and concentrate on the real issues. As far as I can determine both Republicans are happy to “copy” Reagan.

As a college student, this is the best news I’ve seen from the campaign! I now know if my professors ever accuse me of plagiarism, I can simply say I “borrowed” a few phrases from a book I read a few months ago and I happened to share the exact same ideas and words with the author… no big deal, right.
Perhaps some enterprising reporters should research Obummer’s college papers to see how “original” they were. There’s already a good excuse floating around he may want to consider borrowing “I was high (on pot or blow) at the time I said that” by Joran Van Der Sloot.

Sen. Obama’s borrowing from Mr. Patrick may or may not be problematic. But here is a question that is troubling, as it might elevate Sen. Obama’s recent misstep into a pattern.
Senator Obama — In your speech on Super Tuesday, perhaps by coincidence, you used key phrases from a 1984 speech by Jesse Jackson (“Our time has come. Our time has come” DNC), a poem by June Jordan (“we are the ones we have been waiting for” — “Poem for South African Women”), and a song by Norman Hutchins (“a change is coming”) – but you did not credit any of them for the key lines in your speech. Isn’t this the kind of speechwriting that doomed Joe Biden’s presidential campaign in the 1980s, and why should your speeches be held to a different standard?

Irregardless of whether the words Obama used in his speech were plagerism or not look at what he said. He is comparing himself to Thomas Jefferson, Franklin Roosevelt, John F. I am a conservative republican and have been my entire life. I will vote for Obama in Primary! You might ask me why??
He will unit this country to vote against Democratic nominee comes November. He is a god sent for us. I was very worried when I saw Clinton running and thought we would have to hand over the oval office. But by looking at Obama’s records and dealings, I can insure you McCain will win in November without even trying. I have seen how bias the media has been. That is because there is a big disparity based on percentage of population in National Media. They are allowing Clinton bashers and Obama blogger and supporter act like mobs and giving them a free range. We the Conservatives watch the National media as a source of entertainment. It is our Soaps. What they are doing to Clinton is ungodly. That will teach all those politician in Washington a lesson. The one president who was called the Black president is now portrait like the biggest racist. I get a laugh when I see Kennedy’s thinking he is the best president for us. Wasn’t Kennedy the reason our children are left behind??? What else can you expect from a drunken murderer. I get a laugh when I hear they are using every good deeds Clinton did for blacks against him. He should have opened up an office in Trump tower instead of Harlem. I had a great day yesterday reading all the stuff out there about Mr. Borack which will be brought to the open as soon as he wins the nomination for his party. Join me in insuring another Republican presidency comes November. Vote for Borack.

I sure hope you experts in 20th century speeches realize that the “Ask Not What You Can Do For Your Country” in JFK’s speech was recycled from Theodore Roosevelt.
And parts of MLK’s “I Have A Dream” speech came from a southern preacher in the 50′s?
Just checking…

Posted by: KJ | February 19, 2008, 2:04 pm 2:04 pm

let’s talk about patterns here. Clinton won’t release her tax returns, just as the Clintons have withheld vital documents about their time in the White House, just as Hillary Clinton stole her own billing records — only to have them magically appear in the White House! — just as she withheld documents surrounding the White House travel office, just as she rooted through Vince Foster’s file cabinet and withheld those documents as well.
The Clintonistas should be careful going down the attack road. They’re a heck of a lot more vulnerable than Obama is for trading a few clever lines with a friendly pol. (And I’m sure Clinton comes up with all her material on her own of course.)

Mr. Obama has portrayed Mr. Rezko as a one-time fund-raiser whom he had occasionally seen socially. But interviews with more than a dozen political and business associates suggest that the two men were closer than the senator has indicated.
Mr. Obama turned to Mr. Rezko for help at several important junctures. Records show that when Mr. Obama needed cash in the waning days of his losing 2000 Congressional campaign, Mr. Rezko rounded up thousands of dollars from business contacts. In 2003, Mr. Rezko helped Mr. Obama expand his fund-raising for the Senate primary by being host of a dinner at his Mediterranean-style home for 150 people, including some whose names have since come up in the influence scandal.
oh but what did obama say ….
OBAMA: I’m happy to respond. Here’s what happened: I was an associate at a law firm that represented a church group that had partnered with this individual to do a project and I did about five hours worth of work on this joint project. That’s what she’s referring to.

Posted by: eleven22 | February 19, 2008, 2:10 pm 2:10 pm

If we want to say that using literal phrasing from someone else without attributing the original author of the those phrases is plagiarism, then EVERY POLITICAL SPEECH ever made by a politician not written by that person is plagiarism. Such as: The State of the Union address, Inaugural addresses, virtually everything George W. Bush has said in public are the words of others. Much of what Reagan, JFK, probably FDR—-noted for being extraordinary orators–and most other major American politician. Even comments made in Congressional sessions are sometimes written by others.
Hillary speaks words written by speechwriters at times. Hence, she’s a plagiarist, too, no? Do Hillary et al. say “This speech I’m giving was written by x, y, and z.” If not, that presents to the audience that the words are hers–in addition to the ideas, most important of all. Hence, Hillary’s guilty of plagiarism according to her own definition.
Yes it is the same thing–literally.
If he’s taking someone else’s ideas wihtout crediting them–to their disapproval–that’s plagiarism. With approval? No. Patrick and Obama are more thna just friends, they’re poltical colleagues.
The Biden comparison is ludicrous. He was presenting things about himself as being himself. Obama and political speeches written by speechwriters are about ideas, vision, beliefs, values, and policy. Not trying to represent who the speaker actually *is* and what their background is.
This is as much a chracter issue for Hillary et al who use speechwriters as it is for Obama.
Of course, typical Hillary to offer a negative about Obama rather than contributing something positive to promote herself as qualifed and deirable as president.

Posted by: jackstpaul | February 19, 2008, 2:12 pm 2:12 pm

Let’s face this, if Senator Clinton had used a whole paragraph belonging to someone in her speech without giving credit to the person, the News media would have ripped her into pieces and her campaign would be over within weeks if not days.
Senator Obama quoted those words with full force and vigor like they were his own words and was applauded because to the audience he was being inspirational but little did they know that he was cheating.
Senator Obama is not untouchable and the media should treat all the candidates equally and fairly instead of favoring one more than the other. Noone else has brought divisiveness into this campaign than the media.
Thanks!

The point is that the MSM has portrayed Obama as “brilliant” mostly because of his speeches. Now they are not going to do much with this story because it would make them look bad.
If he is using words from other people to make speeches, then he is NOT his own person. He admits he writes them, but doesn’t admit to using others words. THAT IS THE PROBLEM.
Haven’t you noticed that when he is not preaching, I mean making a speach using teleprompters, he stutters and stammers. he is NOT a good speaker then. That is why he doesn’t want to debate again with hillary.
He’s disgusting, and so is his wife for making that statement about for the first time in her life she is proud of this country. Who do these people think they are???

Posted by: Susan | February 19, 2008, 2:18 pm 2:18 pm

Susan ,
They are people who think they deserve the presidency . They are full of themselves. They are stuck up snobs. Obama thinks he is the gift from god. He believes in himself to be a messiah of men. When he is really a fraud among sinners.

Posted by: eleven22 | February 19, 2008, 2:21 pm 2:21 pm

you know, i just came out of college and I can tell you obama could have gotten away with taking quotes from his political friend if he just stated before he said more that was going to. simple as that….BUT HE DID NOT. and that is in fact plagiarism. I cant even write a report without making references because of the consequences of plagiarism. In college if we plagiarize we can get expelled and hold an awful that would lead to our credibility. I do not see how this is a different case, If i’m not wrong even if I was suppose to take wrk from my old reports I had to make reference to them too. So here we have the academics of America saying one thing, and allowing a political figurehead do the other? what is up with this? so i presume if he gets away with it, then all college students can begin to plagiarize and get away with it of course with an endearing speech that his friend allowed him to use those words after the fact.
Especially since Obama has written many books and speeches, you think he would know the basics of MLA and referencing.

“You Obama speech defenders aren’t getting it. Obama’s CLAIM TO FAME is his speeches.”
Jo, see what I wrote about JFK, FDR, Reagn AND Hillary HERSELF.
No, the claim to fame isn’t SPEECHES, it’s IDEAS. He’s not regarded due to elocution or mere words, it’s to ideas above all and the ability to ARTICULATE THEM.
Eleven, he didn’t take whole speeches; he used the same or similar phrasing in a few instances. Patrick and Obama are on record from having said a year ago that in 2006 they strategized on how to respond to the “speeches and words, not leadership and accomplishments” charge because they expected Patrick would be attacked on that basis in his Mass. Gov race, as Obama would, too.
Quit peddling falsehoods.

Your timeline argument also doesn’t make sense. He could have talked to Patrick about this possible attack by Clinton at the timeline you pointed out but that does NOT preclude him from talking to Patrick about speeches, rhetoric and ideas from before.
Indeed, Patrick used Obama’s “Yes we can” refrain in 2006 before their discussions in 2007 and which proves that they talked about this stuff for a long time.
Logic and reasoned arguments are helpful for journalists – also facts.

Posted by: Vik N | February 19, 2008, 2:45 pm 2:45 pm

Oh man. I just read every last one of these comments. I must be really bored. However, I noticed that the people on each side of the issue(the Pro-Obamas and the pro-Hillarys, if you will) are almost literally saying the exact same arguments over and over and over again.
As a completely undecided voter thus far, and one with no party affiliation, I will say that all of you are making the Democratic party look pathetic. If I were a Republican, I would be sitting back and quietly laughing at all of you.
And as for the so-called journalist who wasted his and our time covering this: deep down, don’t you realize there are more important things to cover? I saw a mere sprinkling a comments mentioning that we should be talking more about our soldiers dying for a war that has no end in sight. Only a sprinkling. So sad and yet so indicative of the duplicity we Americans show every day. We all complain about the economy being in a dive, we all claim heartily that we support our troops, and yet when it comes down to it, we’d much rather just hear about little bickerings like these, or Brittany Spears’ latest antics, or who moved on to the next round of American Idol instead of confronting head-on the very thing causing our financial woes and endless grief: the war in Iraq. And yet, it’s too easy to just say we Americans have become complacent. After all, is it not true that these trivial subjects are what is being force fed to us by the MSM? You can’t expect the public to be informed of the issues that actually affect us when those issues are increasingly getting buried and hidden by frivolousness.

Oh Grady, you just don’t get it. Obama is not real, he is a fake.
He is NOT the second coming, like his cult followers would have everyone believe.
If you people would watch his speeches, he is reading off a prompter!!! Those words are just not coming out of his mouth. He does not speak in front of crowds without a prompter.
If you notice, when he is asked questions, he stammers around trying to come with words. He just can’t think for himself.
And you want that for a president?

Jake, It’s not that I don’t believe you on this. It’s that I simply don’t believe anything you write. You lost all credibility as a writer and political correspondent earlier in February, when you wrote: “The Holy Season of Lent is upon us, can Obama worshippers try to give up their Helter-Skelter cultish qualities for a few weeks?” It was incredibly offensive to anyone who happens to be Christian, it compared Obama supporters to followers of Charles Manson, and revealed a level of maturity somewhat below that of my 16 year old. But more disturbing than all of that is the fact that ABC news would retain a reporter with views that are so clearly partisan.

Jake don’t get wrapped up about these Obama-zombies. If you say anything that may paint the man in a mildly negative light you are going get all these insane posts. Half try to character-assassinate you and the other half will character-assassinate Hillary. Because those are the best argument the followers of the ‘hope’ and ‘unity’ candidate have.

Behold, another one of Hillary’s solutions for America:
Slime, defame and besmirch the only chance we have of beating McCain in November.
I guess she is a VERY close friend to McCain after all.
And oh yeah- What about Bill’s shady Khazak uranium deals with a not-so-benevolent dictator? Is that why they refuse to release their financial records? Hmmm…

Gosh Rob, that is another thing wrong with this whole thing. Everyone is afraid to criticise Obama on anything, for fear of being called a racist, and that is what you just did to the writer of this article. It’s not right. and I for one am sick of it. I don’t like Hillary either, but by God it is time someone started bringing crap out on this guy. The MSM won’t! They are all “followers” and drank the “koolaid”

Why Can’t Obama Answer These Questions?
1. Why does Obama’s health care plan leave out 15 Million People while Hillary’s health car plan covers everyone?
2. Why DID he vote for BILLIONS of dollars in Bush giveaways to the oil companies?
3. And this one is of deep concern to Baby Boomers who are now becoming the age to begin receiving social security: Why would Obama, a supposed Democrat up the age of retirement and cut benefits to people who have paid into the system for the benefits they deserve?
And why won’t he debate Hillary?
Is it because he can’t explain the inconsistencies between his rhetoric of hope and change and what he will actually do or has already done?
Is it because he wants to be held to a different and less stringent standard than Hillary?
She has already told us her plan and what she will do and how she plans to go about doing it?
But Barrack Obama doesn’t want to be pinned down or held accountable for the things he says, so he says basically nothing.
We want to hear what you are going to do and how you plan to do it, Mr. Obama.
The people can’t live on rhetoric, nor make informed decisions based on high sounding words with no facts or details to them!
I particularly want to know why you are pressing for $120 BILLION in aid to Africa — where you grandmother actually lives, in Kenya — while upping the age to get social security and cutting the benefits to people who were born in the country to which you are supposed to give your pledge of loyalty, and who have put that money into the system?!
Thank you for taking the time to read and consider what I have asked here.

Why is this even an issue? And why would Hillary, of all people, make it an issue? She was running as the “experience” candidate until she stole Obama’s “change” message. It seems to me that if there’s one person in this race who has nothing to say on the issue of “plagiarism,” it’s Hillary.

Also, remember Obama used the ‘yes we can’ slogan in 04 which patrick used in 06, and during the 06 camphain Obama was actively supporting him in Mas. So the exhange of ideas would have occured over a longer period of time (rememeber, 15 years of friendship), and specific issue might have been discussed at a particular time. So come on, stop trying to make a issue where this is none!

I find it ironic that any FACTS backed up with responsible journalism, such as that by Mr Tapper, is instantly attacked as “not mattering” and being a Clinton supporter.
These typical Obama supporters are tearing our party apart. For them it’s Obama or nothing and that’s not in the spirit of the Democratic party. Get with it or we wont win in November.

I think these young Obama supporters are in deep denial. These kids who blindly supported Mr.Obama are feeling ashamed of their gullibility and naiveness. It hurts. And here their immaturity kicks in. They become very stubborn, being in denial, not admitting
their errors. Actually these Obama supporters are the victims of current politics. They bought one of the most expensively marketed products which actually worth not very much. They feel duped but admitting it make them feel bad and hurt so denial is much easier. Attacking the opponents or anything that make them feel justified, kind of nice to nurse their hurt feelings. Yes, these people were victims of marketing. They know it and we know it. That is why we cannot make these kids/people decide the 2008 election

Experience matters…that’s why Clinton can’t be President. Her experience in the White House proves how divisive she is. Her universal health care task force failed miserably because she couldn’t reach out to the other side of the aisle to gain support for it. AND, scandal after scandal in the White House is experience we don’t want repeated.
Who cares where Obama gets his lines? He delivers those lines exceptionally well, and inspires people. Compare his delivery to McCain’s and Clinton’s use of Obama’s lines and they just have no umph! Obama is an excellent orator and it’s very obvious that the Clinton campaign needs to tarnish this any way they can, even if it’s hypocritically so.

I’m surprised the Clinton campaign let Obama off the hook for stealing Deval Patrick’s speech. Obama didn’t just steal Patrick’s speech…he’s stolen Patrick’s entire campaign! Which speaks to the authenticity and genuineness of Obama’s campaign, rhetoric and message.
The people of Massachusetts voted for Deval Patrick’s campaign/message in 2006, but when they saw Obama running the same campaign with the same message two years later, they thoroughly rejected it. They were played for suckers once and wised up.
Most people usually catch on to a snake oil salesman. Unfortunately for Democrats, they look like they aren’t going to catch on fast enough. But the rest of the country will in time for the general election.
And on another note, Obama (along with Deval Patrick) promises all of this magic change, which leads to the following questions. Just what has Deval Patrick “changed” for the better in Massachusetts in his two years there? And what, if anything has Obama ever “changed” for the better in his entire life?
The only “change” I have ever seen Obama accomplish is that his campaign (Deval Patrick’s really) has changed alot of Clinton supporters into insane, rabid, foaming at the mouth Clinton haters.

A candidacy based on words, even if and especially since they are inspirational, should be those of the candidate’s. That’s the reason there is more scrutiny here. Base a candidacy on honesty, and when there are lies, they are more glaring. Base a candidacy on fighting for vets and voting records show that’s not always the case, that issue will become glaring. If the root of his popularity is his inspirational words, which seem to be the case, I would think that his own constituants would want them to be his own. How inspirational can someone be that only speaks the words he’s given??

Can’t people remember the WhiteWater Scandal with both Clintons caught right in the middle? Remember Monica L. and BillyBoy lying to the American People and remember when he was impeached for Perjury? Remember Vince Foster being Auf’d. Remember how Ms. Williams (current Clinton Campaign manager) broke in and ransacked Vince Foster’s office looking for some kind of damaging evidence about Ms. Clinton and then tried to cover it up to protect the “First Lady”, after Vince Foster was killed but before the Police arrived? Any just why won’t Mrs. Clinton release her tax returns? What IS she hiding? And does anyone remember the Dems pledge (including Hillary) to not put their names on the ballots in Fl, and Mich, nor to campaign in those states? Yet Hillary did indeed have her name on the ballots and did indeed campaign and now wants those votes to count (sorry Fl and Mich) even after she made a pledge to the American People and to her Party to not have these votes count? Doesn’t anyone remember that?? What about her vote to give authorization to start the illegal and immoral war in Iraq that to this day she still can’t explain nor apologize for it? Have you forgotten that? Remember what Billy Boy said – you get two for one when you elect us. (I am crediting Bill Clinton for that line). So, essentially it’s a vote to put Bill back in the White House. Why can’t people remember these things? The Clintons show a clear pattern of low blows, underhanded and sometimes downright illegal tactics and speaks volumes on just how the Clinton’s run their life and their political careers. Yes Clinton has the experience to run this country on Day One – to run it the same way it’s always been run for the last 100 years – lobbyists, corruption, we all know the rest. Obama isn’t twisted by the political coes in Washington. He’s not corrupted by the money sucking corporations, he hasn’t sold out to Big Business. He is fresh – he is alive – he is progressive – he is the New Century Leader. He is offering something different – something new and something we have always JUST hoped for – all races can agree – but never actually thought it could be obtainable. A vote for Obama is a vote for the future. A vote for Clinton is a vote for the past. Clear and simple.

You may not be aware that Hillary Clinton did not write It Takes A Village. She hired a ghost and never gave the real writer any credit. Google it if you want details.
This holier than thou attitude that seems to prevail amongst the Hillary supporters is surprising considering the laundry list of sins committed by the Clintons. There is one thing for sure, Hillary is going to cause the Republicans to get back in office.
When she starts throwing mud, then she further divides the party. She will carry this same divisive attitude into the White House and she will get down to the business of paybacks to those who opposed her or fought against her. She will take that same combat attitude into the world as she meets with our enemies and tries to improve our standing in the world.
Hillary is the one who should be feared because she is the one who can hurt you the most. Doesn’t anyone have any fear of a dynasty or co-monarchy setting up here.
For 30 years we have had a Bush or a Clinton in office. Bush 41 and Bill still stump together for their Foundation. There is another George Bush, son of Jeb, who is half Latino and would be ready to run in 2016. Then Chelsea would be in her 40′s in 16 years would be about ready to run. This is getting dangerous and we the American people need to turn the page. We need somebody else to look after our interests other than a Bush or a Clinton. Obama may not be who you want, but we need to stop this co-monarchy before the democratic process slips away into acceptance of the next Bush or Clinton.
I quote… “Absolute power corrupts absolutely”.

It is getting just a tad bothersome. When many of us are ready to say, “Yeah, this guy may be mostly rhetoric with a few progressive ideas thrown in the mix, but man oh man is it GREAT rhetoric!” and then we start hearing lines he’s using popping up all over the place?
I already accept that most politician’s contributions to their own speeches amount to a read through with pencil in hand. But in this situation I’m like many others: I keep wanting to plug my ears when I hear people saying he’s about nothing but rhetoric; but now to hear he’s running short on rhetoric too?
That speech he gave after Super Tuesday was in my opinion bar none the best I’ve ever heard live (I mean, on TV but JFK, MLK, all those guys were before my time). I want to know that those were his words, I really do.

Senator Obama and Governor Patrick have been close friends for a very long time. Obama was with Patrick just days before his “just words” speech back in 2006 in Boston to endorse him.
Patrick is a brilliant speech writer and orator. I was at the rally in Oct 2006 and can tell you it was nothing short of exhilarating. It wouldn’t surprise me if he is a speech writer for Obama.
All this talk of Obama using Patrick’s words is just nonsense. There are many more important things to write about than two close friends helping each other get elected. Its time to discuss the issues and move on from this nitpicking.

I’m sad for my nieces – one is six years old and she knows Obama’s name. Cheating is OK, he says. John Trigger-Happy Anger-Problem McCain is better for this country than this fraud. The damage is already done – he should have at least acknowledged he should always attribute things like this. He should have done it with a much more serious tone than he did.
(And no, Obama fans, don’t follow up with Hillary did it too. She did not copy entire paragraphs from another guy’s speech. When she said “yes, we can” or “no, we can’t” it was an obvious retort or response to her political opponent during a campaign. And a ghost writer for “It Takes A Village” does not count either, not at all. Hillary hired the ghost writer then had to re-write the thing herself, it was in horrible shape.)

The YES WE CAN slogan was originally coined by Cesar Chavez (Hispanic labor leader) and his movement in California.
I have been bemused at people complimenting Obama’s speechWRITING talent. To the best of my knowledge–ALL presidential candidates use speechwriters. Presidential candidates are worse plagiarizers than ad-writers. If the novice listener doesn’t factor that reality into their evaluations; they should learn that lesson immediately.
Good speaking abilities are judged in three categories:
1. Good delivery (voice control and quality and body language) -
2. If the speaker is speaking extemporaneously (spontanously– or, with little time for preparation (ex: debate) :
Knowledge, clarity of thought, wit or humor, skillful use of language
and good delivery (see above)
3.-IF JUDGED AS AN ORIGINAL SPEECH WRITTEN BY THE SPEAKER: the ability to make a clear and logical argument, factual accuracy, and use of powerful, vivid imagery. All intellectual property must be credited.
If you are listening to the speaker’s original thoughts, they will normally reflect how the speaker communicates spontaneously. In other words, they will still use the same style, syntax, knowledge level and clarity of thought.
If you want to evaluate how much of Obama’s speech is his own work; compare his debate exchanges to his stump speeches.

Obama is CORRUPT, his slogan of change an ILLUSION.
1) A houseowner wants to sell both a house and adjoining land. Obama can afford to buy only the house. No problem, the criminal Rezko to the rescue. Rezko pays full price for the land, whereas Obama gets a discount of $300,000 on the house. Nice to have criminal friends like this!!! (reference ABC News)
2) Exelon Corporation had not disclosed radioactive leaks at one of its nuclear plants in Illinois. Obama, a senator for Illinois introduces a bill to make disclosures mandatory. Seems like Exelon doesn’t like it. Each draft of the new bill by Obama goes more and more towards Exelon till disclosures end up being “voluntary”. What gives? How about $250,000+ donations by Exelon to Obama’s campaigns!!! Obama is not change, he is WASHINGTON BUSINESS AS USUAL. (reference New York Times)
People need to stop believing their fantasies about Obama and realize that Hillary is the one who has been fighting for them all along. All the way back to 1993 when she tried to introduce universal health care (before it became politically fashionable).

President of the United States because he is a “different” kind of candidate? Because he is “change.” ROTFLMAO. You Obama supporters are seriously not thinking this thing through. If you SERIOUSLY think that Obama is a different kind of candidate, then your just deluding yourself or you just don’t care. Either way, it’s creepy. I do agree with you, though, he gives a great speech! I will give him a 7 on a scale of 10 and Duval Patrick a 9. I give the speech writer they share a 10. A different kind of candidate? And apparently he’s being caught in small lies that amount to small compromises in integrity now (to prop up an image of perfection). That image will have to fall at some point. I’d rather it fall now, than when small compromises have the chance to become much larger ones in the White House.

seriously who cares?…..they are buds, pals borrow from each other all the time..if it was such a big deal why isn’t gov. patrick up in arms about it?

Well, Obama admitted he used Patrict’s “Words” and should have credited him when he used the “Words” and didn’t. I believe he credited him later when this became an issue for some reason. The good people of Wisconsin and Hawaii didnot see this as an issue, neither will Texas and Ohio and the remaining states. Another non productive fishing expidition by would be “anglers”, to put Senator Obama in a picture that only fits your preconcieved image. Get mad about the message “Words” not the messenger.

I wonder if Obama’s student supporters feel they can do the same on a term paper or essay.
Many students feel that it is OK and lift entire essays. You can but them online. So if they are cheaters, then it is no problem to follow someone else who does.
I wonder how my professors would react if I said I lifted some of my friend’s term paper but it’s ok because it’s my friend and she gave me permission.
I mean it’s only words,right?

If words can be owned–and I’m not sure these simple stock phrases can be “owned”–but if they are owned by Deval Patrick–they can only be “stolen” by Obama if Deval wants to press charges. If I come home and find you in my living room eating out of my fridge, do you automatically go to jail for trespassing or stealing? Not unless I press charges. If I am the injured party, and I don’t press charges, nobody else can do that for me. What Deval Patrick gives away as a gift cannot be stolen–whether he approved it before or after it was “taken” is not the point.

This is the biggest non-issue thus far in the campaign. This was NOT a scientific publication, it was NOT a journalist making up sources, it was NOT an author lifting pages of another’s book. It was similar words of a well travelled Democratic speech writer appearing in two different speeches he wrote.

I care! Obama has great words and nothing else!

Perhaps the speechwriter shouldn’t have used the same words for two so similar candidates in such a short timespan. The larger question is whether “the words” really mean anything. Patrick hasn’t had too much success creating coalitions within his own party in Mass. and his term so far has been disappointing at best. His recent state of the state address reflects a governor that’s either out of touch with economic realities or who continues to push hope and belief over any viable plan for action.

Clinton shouldn’t be criticising anyone about a lack of experience. I wouldn’t let her take care of my goldfish much less run the country. I don’t think McCain is the greatest thing to ever come down the pike but it would be interesting to see how Obama would have reacted in the prisoner of war camp that McCain led his men through and eventually out of in Vietnam. It’s rare to have a candidate who’s leadership and character has been tempered as McCain’s has.

Nobody is talking about what matters.
The “just words” quotes that Obama lifted were spoken by Martin Luther King, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and our forefathers and signers of the Declaration of Independence. The reason that those words have inspired generations and are quoted today is because they were spoken by men whose actions spoke far louder than any words they spoke. It wasn’t those words that have transcended time but the weight that those words held due to the courage and leadership of the great men that said them.
It’s important to understand how “just words” can manipulate even when they are someone else’s. Actions, on the other hand, are the only communication who’s source is unquestionable.

What is most ironic is this:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident…that all men are created equal…”
was indeed JUST WORDS, in the sense that, at the time, “all men” meant “the right kinds of wealthy white men.”
So, words do need to be buttressed by consistent authentic ACTIONS, else they just mislead, as those words misled Obama when he ‘quoted’ them in Patrick’s context.
About actions. The press hasn’t yet done a sufficiently thorough job of informing us about the comparative track records of the candidates, and the extent to which they allow themselves to be influenced by corporate interests.
For example, what’s the story on the energy bill, and how Obama, Hillary, and McCain stood on its various aspects?

I am a Democrat from Massachusetts that voted for Gov. Duval Patrick. I was a fan of his since a year before he announced that he was running for Governor of Massachusetts and appeared in an interview on our Town television station. Wow, was I ever impressed. I told a friend, he will be our first black President. He won the Governors race by a landslide!
I along with many of his followers am extremely disappointed in what he has done in 14 months in office. He hasn’t done a thing. Not one thing, and now he just signed a 1.35 million dollar book deal, about his life story. This man is a nice, wonderful guy, but a as far as having the ability to govern, he is a fraud. I am positive after hearing the disappointment in his constituency that he couldn’t get elected as “dog catcher” 14 mos. later.
The man is incompetent and a con artist. We’ve all been had. Our only saving grace will be that Duval will take him so that we can get a Governor that knows the political arena and can work with a legislature. Disgusted!
