Hillary: Bring Me the Head of David Martin Shuster

I don’t think President Bush reacted this strongly — at least publicly, and personally — to Dan Rather’s "Memo-Gate" scandal.

But apparently, MSNBC correspondent David Martin Shuster’s apology and suspension aren’t enough for Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y. She refers to them, in a letter to the president of NBC News, as insufficient.

Here’s the text of her letter to NBC News president Steve Capus:

Dear Mr. Capus,

Thank you for your call yesterday.  I wanted to send you this note to convey the depth of my feeling about David Shuster’s comments.

I know that I am a public figure, and that my daughter is playing a public role in my campaign.  I am accustomed to criticism, certainly from MSNBC.  I know that it goes with the territory.

However, I became Chelsea’s mother long before I ran for any office, and I will always be a mom first and a public official second.

Nothing justifies the kind of debasing language that David Shuster used, and no temporary suspension or half-hearted apology is sufficient.

I would urge you to look at the pattern of behavior on your network that seems to repeatedly lead to this sort of degrading language.

There’s a lot at stake for our country in this election.  Surely, you can do your jobs as journalists and commentators, and still keep the discourse civil and appropriate.

Sincerely,

Hillary Rodham Clinton

This prompts some questions to throw out here for discussion.

1) Would this set a bad precedent — as in, should presidential candidates try to dictate to media organizations who should be their employees?

2) Would Shuster’s firing fit the offense? Too harsh or just right?

3) Do you share Clinton’s view that Shuster’s apology was half-hearted? You can watch it HERE. What more could or should he have said?

4) I don’t doubt that Clinton was offended, deeply. But how much of this public war against MSNBC and David Shuster is because of that outrage, and how much of it — if any — is politics, to galvanize female voters and get them to the polls?

Are they saying that other candidate family members are “pimps”? Hillary has worked hard as First Lady and as Senator. SHOW HER THE SAME RESPECT YOU WOULD SHOW TO ANY OTHER CANDIDATE. Name calling degrades the one doing it much more than the one who is being abused by this type of school yard bullying. CAN YOU PEOPLE PLEASE GROW UP???

The questions show an attitude of arrogance and the belief that the media and journalists are above accountability. The freedom of the press is used as a shield for comments that know no bounds in decency and viciousness.
Shuster should be fired and MSNBC should cease sheltering him from full accountability.

This isn’t about Chelsea Clinton. It’s just another cynical opportunistic Clinton ploy to get votes.

Shuster should be fired and MSNBC should cease sheltering him from full accountability. However, that is not enough. MSNBC reporters are playing God these days, since HRC ran for Presidency. Can anyone tell what their problem is? Anyone???

Par for the course for Hillary Clinton.
If you go against her, she will do all in her power to destroy you. If she can get a few extra votes in the process, hey, that’s gravy.
She has no problem demeaning women who have crossed her or her husband during their previous White House stint. She is a hypocrite.
She’s getting attention, and now she’s milking it for all it’s worth. Frankly I can’t understand why she is spending so much time on this, and not focusing on her campaign – I guess she feels she can’t win on the issues?
What happens when she gets into power, and someone, say Jon Stewart, mocks her health care policy. Is she going to shut that show down? Even though he’s not any more of a reporter than Schuster is? What we see on TV is just a reflection of talk radio. Extremism is what drives ratings. For MSNBC to set up yabbering fools on their own shows, and then throw them under the bus when they go “too far”, is preposterous.
Even though I am a female voter, her demographic, I remember how the Clinton White House used the FBI to investigate their “republican enemies”. I remember them using the IRS to audit “bill’s ladies”. She is frankly too dangerous to put in the position of the presidency.
This should serve as a warning to everyone.

we watch chris mathews and msnbc regularly, and long before they are caught with this kinds of remarks,we felt that msnbc and hardball was very partial in their comments for obama and very much against clinton.DO NOT TRY TO INFLUENCE ANYBODY.we do not want to get stuck with the president of any news persons pick. The fact that you said these nasty things, you do not deserve to be on that job.

Come on people, don’t be so easily manipulated. A tear here, a seemingly endless well of indignation there, Hillary is pimping her daughter for votes and you are buying it.

Posted by: Get Real | February 9, 2008, 8:47 pm 8:47 pm

The comment was in very poor taste, and disparages a young woman,. who like her mother, hanldes herself with dignity. When Don Imus insulted the ladies basket ball team members, there was a tremendous level of commotion that culminated in his separation from the station – why is this different ? The family members of candidates are not ‘fair game’ for mean spirited attacks – that the Press would be able to handle themselves in this manner while hidihg behind the 1st ammendment is disgraceful ! Sexual slurs are just as inappropiate as racial slurs !

We all say things that sometimes we wish that we could take back. However that said, I would never have taken that remark back. Clinton states “that my daughter is playing a public role in my campaign”. If she is out in public helping her mom then Chelsea is free game. Yes her mom was “pimping” her because she asked her daughter to sway the Super-delegates and money in her favor. Only diffrence is Chelsea is not getting paid or winning votes its going to the “PIMP” Sen. Clinton.

In answer to your questions, JPT:
1) I believe a candidate may express an opinion about whom a media organization should or should not have on its staff. Top news analysts for the major networks are, in my opinion, public figures. The media organization doesn’t have to take the suggestion about the hiring or firing. A free press needs to be free of government coercion, and Sen. Clinton is an elected official.
2) I think firing would be too harsh. I think a reprimand and suspension and having to deliver the public apology are sufficient. He needs to be given a second chance.
3) I thought his apology was sincere and contrite. I think he felt very humiliated.
4) For Sen. Clinton to prolong this matter after the apology does, in my opinion, arouse suspicion that the campaign would like to use the situation to generate sympathy among voters.

Posted by: Chuck in Denver | February 9, 2008, 8:56 pm 8:56 pm

The media needs to stop running to mommy when it comes across somebody who wont take their bullying.
This might be a minor attention getting ploy on Clinton’s part. However lets not go overboard on “media rights” or “bad precedent”. This is hardly a case of a presidential candidate trying to “dictate to media organizations who should be their employees”.

If the same comment had been used in reference to the Obama campaign, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and the NAACP would be screaming bloody murder. Where are they at right now?

Posted by: Bob | February 9, 2008, 9:01 pm 9:01 pm

this is ridiculous, it was a slang term kids use all the time for all kinds of things. chelsea is not a young girl or a child. accept the apology and move on. i am thinking this will backfire for her if it goes too far. can chelsea speak for herself? she must know folks that use this kind of evolving slang. it is just that. MOVE ON!
if we are really going to pick it apart- where did the expression “rule of thumb’ come from– it was the legal width of the switch that husbands were aloud to beat their wives with-in ancient times– now are we going to demand a firing if someone slips up and references that phrase? you get my drift….

Posted by: lori | February 9, 2008, 9:01 pm 9:01 pm

If someone had said that Obama was pimping out his wife Michelle, not only would they have been immediately fired, their career would be over, and the network would be groveling. In fact, I dont even know if would be safe for the guy to go out in public.
MSNBC’s coverage of this race has been one sided, mean spirited and repulsive.
Fire both of them. Clinton, her entire team and any supporters should boycott this station until they start behaving like journalists.
If I had a daughter, I wouldn’t let her watch the mysoginy that passes as news commentary on this broadcaster for fear she might begin to think lesser of herself or her potential as a woman.
Enough already.

Posted by: s.b. | February 9, 2008, 9:03 pm 9:03 pm

Shuster should not have to apologize! Like MSNBC can’t handle reality? poor itsy, bitsy, wittle Clinton… Shuster hurt her teeny tiny feelings. Anyone who watches the news or reads a paper knows, in fact, Hillary “P-I-M-P-E-D” her daughter for her own sake! And why is this so? Because the “good mother” already made it public she did not want Chelsea to answer questions all along. She’s now switched positions and based on her previous stance, she’s PIMPING CHELSEA.
So our illustrious STRONG EXPERIENCED LEADER RUNS AND HIDES every time the news hurts her fragile feelings? OMG. What a lame excuse not to debate! Imagine this: A Commander in Chief who wimp out because her fragile feelings get hurt every time someone throws a stone.
The hypocrisies of the Clinton clan shine yet again.

Haven’t seen paranoia like this since Tricky Dicky. Better up that Prozac prescription and pass some around to the rest of the nut cases at campaign headquarters.

Posted by: Steve | February 9, 2008, 9:08 pm 9:08 pm

The comments from the Obama-ites are telling. Since he didnt single out the Bush twins, Romneys sons, Edwards daughter shows this is more bias against Hillary’s campaign that MSNBC shows everyday. On super Tuesday I turned to Fox news to watch returns since every other channel was drinking the koolaid of Obama. He need to go this just says that sexism isnt as bad as racism. When they are both equally bad.

Posted by: toby olive | February 9, 2008, 9:09 pm 9:09 pm

I get the outrage, at least initially. But I think the harping on it by Clinton is likely to backfire.
Has anyone ever heard the term “pimping my ride” “pimp my crib” or other variations? That expression — and other variations — have become a part of modern slang and don’t necessarily mean someone’s turning tricks on a corner.
And i, as a woman, thinks she doth protest too much at this point. It’s coming across as very calculated to me.
If only she could find some way to blame obama????

Posted by: Colleen | February 9, 2008, 9:09 pm 9:09 pm

I support Obama, but I also think this guy should be fired, and whoever was laughing at the comment in the background as well. The media should raise our standards of discourse and the terms we use to describe them. A subtle part of all discrimination is the terms used to put down the target, and the subtlety of it is as dangerous as anything. There is no place for this kind of talk, and if it goes on behind the scenes and slips out the just demonstrated a pattern the the network is obligated to deal with.

Obama should thank Hillary for not doing debate. Did any one remember SC debate?

Posted by: Humm | February 9, 2008, 9:14 pm 9:14 pm

While I am not a staunch supporter of the Clintons, I am in agreement with Hillarys letter and believe MSNBC has gone to far, both with the “Pimping” comments and another I heard that Chris Matthews suggested Hillarys political career has been built off her husbands philandering.
Where is the line of decorum? Nappy headed ho’s got Imus removed, so why not these people? Chelsea is the daughter of a former American President and to equate her as being pimped out, is basically calling her a political ho. It’s wrong, its indecent and media needs to be held accountable for their actions.
Isn’t it bad enough they infuse their opinions into the political process w/o also having carte blanc to insult the candidates at will. Objectivity-pffft!

Posted by: Scott-NH | February 9, 2008, 9:20 pm 9:20 pm

1) The media needs protection from the candidates.
2) I think even suspension is to much. He was asking a question, not making a political statement.
3) The apology should have been the end of it.
4) This is just a stunt by Clinton to get some free press and votes.

Posted by: Z | February 9, 2008, 9:24 pm 9:24 pm

I think that the networks need to maintain a high level of professionalism in their work. This remark that alludes to a young lady’s involvement in a campaign, however public it may be, falls far short of acceptable standards. As a Christian conservative, I feel that MSNBC needs to hold Dave Shuster to account. As Christ said, “But the things that come out of the mouth come form the heart, and these make a man unclean”.(Matt. 15 verse 18). One may disagree with the Clinton s on political matters but we need not stoop to vulgarity.
It would be a gracious act for the Clinton campaign to forgive this man for clear “he knows not what he speaks”.

Posted by: Paul | February 9, 2008, 9:29 pm 9:29 pm

The media guy has been suspended from his job for his use of the slang; so the ever-mean and unforgiving Clintons are just grandstanding FOR SYMPATHY VOTES .. AGAIN!
If the ‘parents’, Clintons, were this outraged when the relatively YOUNGER MONICA LEWISNSKI WAS HAVING HER LIFE DESTROYED by a ‘stained dress’ in the Oval Office by the Clintons, then one could consider Hillary’s present response as genuine.
Where was the outrage for Monica Lewinski, who WAS USED by the far more ‘adult’ Clintons? And to think of it, there was more than a mere slang that “that woman, Miss Lewinski” had to endure!
I am will to wager that Chelsea DID NOT volunteer to assist in the Clintons PERSONAL AMBITIONS for a THIRD TERM!
That is why her unenthusiastic politicking seems like she is being ‘pimped’. The Clintons are desperate as their fortunes begin to drift away!
No more debasing of the Oval Office by the Clintons.
The Clintons may ONCE destroy their White House legacy, deny Al Gore and ENABLED THE BUSH-WHACKING OF AMERICA!
Never again, the Clintons!
ABCD: Anybody But Clinton Dynasty!

This is a stunt by the Clintons to keep attention focused on them this weekend instead of all the winning Obama is doing in the elections.
The comment was ill-conceived but in no way rises to the level of outrage that the Clinton campaign would like us to believe.
It is another effort by them to manipulate us, just as the tears manipulated us, just as the complaint of piling on manipulated. And if it doesn’t look good in the upcoming elections, you can bet she’ll come up with something else to focus our attention.
Team Clinton stops at nothing and that is why some of us question the wisdom of putting her in the WH.
BTW, I’m in the column with folks who think Chelsea should be speaking out on her own behalf; she is an independent adult woman who should have a voice. Hillary is out of line in taking the lead in this charge, especially if she really believes each woman is empowered independently.

Posted by: kitty | February 9, 2008, 9:33 pm 9:33 pm

I thought Mrs. Rodham Clinton was running for President. Hillary sounds like she is running for Queen, and plans on using the White House fence to place the trophy heads of her opposition.

Posted by: Doug | February 9, 2008, 9:34 pm 9:34 pm

#1 – Yes
#2 – Even the suspension was ridiculous. I’m no fan of Bush, but I thought Hillary’s remark about how it took a Clinton to clean up after the first Bush and it will take a Clinton to clean up after the 2nd Bush was in very poor taste, but she thought it was hilarious!
#3 – I heard Mr. Shuster’s apology and I feel it was sufficient and sincere.
#4 – Given Hillary’s history of headline grabbing right before primaries, I, as a woman, resent her trying to galvanize women to secure votes. And although she had every right to be upset over the remark, she certainly played it to the hilt, didn’t she?

Chelsea only made the call after her mother was in her eyes or Hillary’s dissed. She has been so protected now when things get hot she starts to come out! When a spouse is calling it is a big difference then when a young girl that the Clintons have said they wanted to stay out of the public eye starts making calls. Hillary should have had her call people when her father was cathing so much deserved heat!POOR HILLARY!Get used to it you want the highest office and the BUCK and FLAP stops at your door!Someone put Chelsea up to that call and yes she was PIMPED!!!

Posted by: Carolyn | February 9, 2008, 9:37 pm 9:37 pm

Jose,
If this were simply the first time this happened right before an election, I would agree with you that the opposition was being unfair to Hillary.
But how often do these little incidents have to happen with such perfect timing before you see a pattern of manipulation emerge?
You don’t think Hillary is smart enough to know exactly what she is doing? Yes, she is defending her daughter but the level of her outrage is out of proportion to the event. She has made it a political firestorm because she can take advantage of this.
This has nothing at all to do with Obama or any other candidate. It has to do with the mindset of this woman.
I am a woman of certain age and a mother. I would of course be upset if someone said something foul about either of my daughters. I have read and reread the comment and honestly cannot figure out why this has become such an issue. This was a misappropriation of a term–nothing more–and to make it into something more grand or more sinister is ridiculous.

Posted by: kira | February 9, 2008, 9:43 pm 9:43 pm

FIRST OFF- to all the Clintonites bashing MSNBC- You must all get your news from ABC then. I bet you all just LOVE George Stephanopolous. Watching THAT man analyze Obama when he is so obviously pro-Hillary nauseates me more than anything. Sorry, ABC, but you too are not free from fourth rate commentators.
And now, on to your questions:
1) God forbid Hillary ever become President. Anti-thing remotely anti-clintonite and she will call for your head just as she is calling for Shuster’s. I understand why she might be offended, but an apology should be the end of it. Get over it. I know you are a petty woman, but at least try to fake some forgiveness. You did it for Bill all these years. The word “pimp”‘s use as slang in the English language is so commonplace that many times it does not even connote prostitution anymore.
2) Shuster’s suspension is enough already. Firing would be uncalled for.
3) I disagree with Clinton that Shuster’s apology was half-hearted. That should have been the end of it. This is the type of bitter, go-for-the-kill politician that Clinton is. What more could he have said? “I apologize to Queen Hillary, here is my head, I fire myself”. That would make her happy in Hillaryland.
4) This is a Clinton stunt, period. Free publicity, since her campaign fund is running dry as a bone.
Enough already.

Posted by: jan | February 9, 2008, 9:45 pm 9:45 pm

Kira,
If someone had insulted your child on NATIONAL TV (not just in front of a crowd of 2 or 3) I would hope that you would be outraged.
If not, that speaks volumes about you as a parent.
Is Clinton using this to her advantage? I’m not convinced she is. I genuinely think they protect their daughter, and have always done so.
That being said, if somehow it were discovered this was a part of their strategy, it wouldn’t surprise me either. That’s just the nature of politics, politics that Obama as well exploits (though, of course, no one ever reports).

Posted by: Jeremy | February 9, 2008, 9:47 pm 9:47 pm

Sorry to say, but truth is opportunist Obama took advantage of the Bill’s term “Yes I can” and advocated “Yes You can” and all the people started running behind him. Clinton haters are just playing games and are not focussed on the issue. Once game is over and reality syncs in everyone and economy pinched, I will be here to see the reactions.

Posted by: Humm | February 9, 2008, 9:48 pm 9:48 pm

Unfortunatley the media no longer reports the news. They believe their personal prefference are the news. I have noticed this lashing out against Hillary by many of those who should be reporting the news instead of trying to make it. I’m starting to believe this may actually be the attitude of the networks to support Obama. Whenever the Clinton’s say anything that involves an african american, the media twist it into something they did not say. There was the supposed ” racial” comment by President Clinton about Obama taking the SC vote because he was black, just like Jesse Jackson did, which is the truth. Well guess what every night I hear news commentators saying the exact same thing, Obama is getiing the black vote, but no one calls them racist. Why is that?? Then there was Hillary making the observation that Martin Luther King’s dream required President Johnson bringing it to fruition. The media tried to turn it into something on the lines only a white man can get things done. She never said or implied that. What she accuratley observed was that it takes politicians to bring about laws. There was nothing racial about it. Then there are the commentators during the debates trying to get Hillary to start an argument with Obama such as was seen on CNN. If this continues I believe the FCC should step in and pull the networks licenses for their partial support of one candidate over another.

Young girl??? Chelsea is 28 years old!!!Good Lord. She has been living on her own, starting her career. It’s time for momma to cut the apron strings!

Posted by: Doug | February 9, 2008, 9:55 pm 9:55 pm

Jeremy,
I am 19 years old. I don’t have kids. I do, however, have a general idea how I want to be treated as a woman, and I do have an idea when a word used commonly by my generation is misunderstood by an older generation. That seems to be exactly what has happened in this instance, and all the people on this forum who are trying to instill more weight into the word than it currently carries simply don’t understand my generation.
And I do understand the patterns of behavior that the Clintons are displaying as being about a whole lot more than protecting a 28 year old woman who should be able to defend herself.
Here’s the deal: Hillary can be upset about the comment; that is her right as a parent.
But she is also a national candidate for the highest office in the land and running, supposedly, a gender neutral race–until she falls behind in the polls or in primaries and then suddenly the gender card is back in play. For her to abuse her position to twist this into a platform is wrong, and it does disservice to women everywhere who have fought for equality.
For her to make the sort of demands she has made is wrong. She is a public figure and when she allowed her daughter to be her surrogate, Chelsea became a public figure.
I think the older generation need to chill a bit. The term isn’t bad as we use it and isn’t a huge insult. The Clintons have overreacted and dragged a lot of their supporters along with them. That is a shame.

Yes David Shuster should be fired. All candidates have family members helping in their campaigns. But nothing like this has been said about any of the other candidates. Mr. Shuster’s comments were him using his position to show favoritism toward Obama and try to get viewers to think the same. I also believe Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill Oreilly and the rest of those partial newscasters should also be fired. It is not the news’ job to tell us what to think.

Posted by: Aaron | February 9, 2008, 10:13 pm 10:13 pm

Humm.
Sexual harassment is only appropriate if the person who is harassing you is in the position of affecting your career, promotion, position, etc.
Simply using a word you find offensive is not sexual harassment. This commentator was not in a position to harm Chelsea’s career, nor was he is a position to hire or fire her mother.
This entire thing is so overblown–it is all politics.
And here’s another thing: if Hillary was such a concerned mother, she should have taken this entire thing under the table and handled it quietly instead of trying to get miles and miles of free publicity from it.

Posted by: kira | February 9, 2008, 10:13 pm 10:13 pm

Wow! This is unbelievable…especially when I consider all the names I was called growing up. The difference here is that Hillary is a candidate for president of the United States…and she takes such an offense like this? Even after the guy apologizes no less. Sure, the remark was out of bounds and outrageous…but give me a break. This is simply a political ploy, and nothing more. Just play the “woman is victim card” for all it’s worth. I just can’t wait to see how she will use the power of the United States to show her disgust if/when she is called another name as president, you think?

TV and media journalists often are the first to pick on candidates’ faux pas, however, they themselves take liberties in deviating from civility and respect in their reporting.
I personally have no sympathy for Mr. Shuster.

you obviuosly have no idea what your talking about. If a negative, untrue comment like that was made about my child on national tv, I would be doing the same and more.

Posted by: aaron | February 9, 2008, 10:22 pm 10:22 pm

Humm,
Personal honor has little place in a political race. Besides, it is a slippery slope to try to impose one person’s sense of honor on the rest of people.
I have read and reread the comment. I am not overly offended by it. It does not offend my sense of honor.
If he had made comments about Chelsea’s sexual activity on the campaign trail, that would have been over the line and out of order and indeed offend my sense of honor, because the guy would then have been tryig to crawl inside a private life.
But what Chelsea is doing on the campaign trail is open to discussion and speculation. The only thing this guy did wrong was use a word some people find offensive. And from there it has gone way overboard in terms of reaction.
But what does it say about Clinton as a candidate if she cannot react with more restraint than she has? She made a bad call in making this a public feud with MSNBC. She should have contacted the company, aired her complaint, made sure they understood her concerns, and got on with her campaign. Instead, she’s making a public spectacle of a minor incident. Her sense of honor seems to be missing in action for her to take what should have been a private discussion public to garner a wave of support.
And it is so strange that this ALWAYS happens when bad news is in the offing.

Posted by: kira | February 9, 2008, 10:26 pm 10:26 pm

Kira,
Hillary just lodged the complain and let MSNBC and law take it course. We are making it big and more we discuss about it more the false illusion of Hillary doing it will created. So, less you discuss about it more you will be focussed on issue.

The only reason I don’t know what I’m talking about is because I don’t agree with you. That is the same approach to life that I see Hillary Clinton taking in this instance: if the news media does something I do not like, I will make life miserable for them. I don’t want a petty dictator in the WH. We already have one.
I am appalled by the senior generations eagerness to restrict freedom of speech–when it suits them.

I neither like nor dislike Hillary Clinton, but I dislike very much the approach her campaign uses. I dislike her attempt to manipulate all of us. I dislike negative politics and of the remaining candidates, I think she indulges in negativity the most.
I listen to all debates and give her ‘props’ when she does well. I have read a lot about her to determine if she has the substance necessary to be elected. She obviously wants to be president very badly and has positioned herself to make that dream a reality.
But somewhere along the line the heavy-handed tactics began to take over.
For the sake of us all, she needs to moderate her campaign’s behavior before she turns off questioning voters like me.

The Shuster remarks were extremely offensive. What makes it worse is that Shuster and Carlosn and Matthews and Scarborouogh have all used offensive, sexist remarks against the Clinton campaign for months.
Should Shuster be fired? If Hillary and Chelsea were black, he would have been fired on the spot.
Anyone has a right to complain about what is said on the airwaves – that’s not an infringement of free speech. Only the government’s interference can be an abuse of the First Amendemnt.
MSNBC hasbeen shilling for Obama for months. The only regular who tries to be fair is Dan Abrams.

The cry baby is milking this as long as she can for some sympathy votes..
Yes the Hilary supporters may feel pleasure in this crying.. but one thing no one can deny is that the independent and intelligent voters are going through this would be turned off from Clinton by this disproportionate crying and complaining.

Posted by: moeen | February 9, 2008, 10:43 pm 10:43 pm

Perhaps she doesn’t want him fired, but she wants stricter enforcement of rules of civility toward public figures like herself. The media should also be careful to stop overdoing doing things that show hatred to her.

You cannot, should not turn against somebody who so many people are already against … unless if this person isn’t just a fellow human being.

Posted by: PC | February 9, 2008, 10:49 pm 10:49 pm

This issue has nothing to do with political affiliation and a lot to do with the gender issue. There is nothing wrong in having Chelsea campaign for her mother. She is a young woman capable of making her own decisions and she is born into a politically active family. It is very much like children getting involved in their family business, or help with household chores. Shuster displayed very poor judgement in his choice of words as he expressed his biased views about the role of mothers and daughters in the political world dominated by males. Shuster has the right to express his thoughts, and Hillary Clinton has every right to respond and communicate her perspective. If indeed this incident gave Clinton another “women’s power” boost, then, thank you to people like Shuster who created the situation. His apology fell short because he remained arrogant.

Since when did Hillary become a mother first ??? That is such a joke. Hillary’s out for power, and nothing else !

I find it frightening how many people are for censoring the press. That’s always turned out great in the past.

Posted by: KGC | February 9, 2008, 11:00 pm 11:00 pm

Hillary should think twice, we do not censor the press or oppress the press, there was a mistake, it was corrected through and apology and that should be enough. MSNBC and NBC should continue their work as part of the democratic process in the US and in the world.

I don’t understand why the rightwing press thinks it has the right to use innuendo and hatred in its dialogue. It isn’t about free speech. It’s about being civil human beings. I’m sadded that our country has sunk so low.

Posted by: Mike | February 9, 2008, 11:17 pm 11:17 pm

Hilliary has ever right to be upset, it the aplogy was given in true regrett it would be one thing, but it was not. It was given because he wants his job and that is the only reason, he is not sorry for what he said. Yes the younger people throw words out as verbs that are ugly words as though they are nothing, and that is part of the disrespect of women that has been going on for the last 10 years. Obama would have gone nuts if his wife or daughters were talked about that way, don’t think he wouldn’t just because young people are so crazy about him, he is a respectabe man. Chelsea is working with her Mom, any daughter her age would love to be doing this with their Mom, so stop slaming Hilliary for having a daughter who loves her Mom and wants to have this experince, who wouldn’t want to help their Mom become president.

WHERE IN THAT LETTER DID HILLARY ASK FOR “THE HEAD OF DAVID SHUSTER?” THERE YOU GO AGAIN……..PERHAPS YOU ALL SHOULD GO WORK FOR THE ENQUIRER, OR THE STAR OR ANY OTHER MEDIOCRE NEWS RAG BECAUSE YOU CERTAINLY AREN’T JOURNALISTS. THE MEDIA DURING THIS CAMPAIGN HAVE BEEN SHAMEFUL IN THEIR THEATRICS, VERBAL ABUSE AND DOWN-RIGHT SMUGNESS. YOU WOULD NEVER, EVER GET AWAY WITH SOME OF YOUR REPREHENSIBLE REMARKS IF THEY WERE ABOUT THE MALE CANDIDATES IN THIS ELECTION! LETS SEE HOW SMUG YOUR NET WORKS ARE WHEN PEOPLE QUIT WATCHING AND QUIT SUPPORTING YOUR SPONSERS! I WILL NEVER WATCH MSNBC AGAIN.

name-calling is what politics and political commentating is all about, and always has been. the fact that this issue is getting so much attention is silly. this guy shuster is just a small part of it and to fire him for saying “pimping” is ridiculous. this is a small transgression, equalled and exceeded on a daily basis by bill o’rielly and nancy grace. it’s a circus and if chelsea wants to get in the ring she shouldn’t expect anything less. clinton and her supporters need to rise above and move on.

Re: NURSERATCHET
WHERE IN THAT LETTER DID HILLARY ASK FOR “THE HEAD OF DAVID SHUSTER?”
Nothing justifies the kind of debasing language that David Shuster used, and no temporary suspension or half-hearted apology is sufficient.
I guess you read it in such a hurry you missed it, but there you go.

lori…this is ridiculous, it was a slang term kids use all the time for all kinds of things.” LORI, THIS WASN’T A KID USING THIS LANGUAGE, IT WAS A TV NEWS PERSON. AND, MY CHILDREN DO NOT USE THE TERM “PIMP”, “PIMPED OUT” OR ANY OTHER VARIATION. A PIMP IS A PIMP, PERIOD. AND THE OTHERS HERE ARE CORRECT. IF ANYONE HAD SAID OBAMA WAS PIMPING OUT HIS WIFE FOR HIS POLITICAL GAINS, WE WOULD BE HAVING RIOTS!

Posted by: NURSERATCHET | February 9, 2008, 11:38 pm 11:38 pm

Why Hillary is losing her focus on race and fighting with TV and getting involved in controversy?!
This is terrible, since the Obama just going to kepe winning if she don’t get to the issues. I wish it was Bill run again.

Posted by: sam | February 9, 2008, 11:51 pm 11:51 pm

It somehow is staying outside the publics attention, what exactly Chelsey was doing for what Shuster’s comment went nuclear: she was making phone calls to states’ superdelegates in behalf of her mom. I doubt it very much that this was her own idea – she was couched by either her mom, or by her dad, or by her mom’s campaign manager. Usually this is a job for political or cultural dignitaries – I never knew that Chelsey is one. Shuster’s choice of wording is disgusting, of course, but politics IS a dirty business, and if one doesn’t want to be smeared – s/he stays away from the mud. Hillary should know that better than anyone…

Posted by: torero | February 9, 2008, 11:53 pm 11:53 pm

… and, if Mrs. Clinton is so upset by uncivil behavior of the only one US press outlet during the primaries – just wait when general elections start. Hillary is such a polarizing figure of the 2008 campaign – and, probably, in the whole D.C. – that remarks from all other outlets will become a chorus… So, i next time we’ll be discussing her husband’s extramarital affairs – in details – on the national TV will shut down all the TV stations?…

why is it NO ONE has piled on Oboma the way they have on Hillary? why are the “guys” at (can’t class you as the press)msnbc act like nasty Jr. high school jerks? For gosh sakes grow up & try to conduct your self like the ABC press. Try to come up to their level.what is it about you guys-you don’t like smart strong women? just for once i would like to see the press act like real news men & not stoop to the tabloid’s- by calling women degrading names & talk about her husband messing around. My god -he lied about sex-Bush has lied about the war that has killed or crippled our best & the brightest young people. I would dare any of you to
make a few remarks like this garbage about Oboma- he has you guys right where he wants you. You can’t say anything bad -because the he & everyone would call you a racist !! I don’t ask for favors-just FAIRNESS-try it some tme!

Posted by: robert | February 10, 2008, 12:46 am 12:46 am

I am so sick of the media and their polarizing effect. They talk about how polarizing Hillary is, but quite on the contrary. They have been setting her up to fall for a while now. I am sick of this media. A bunch of self, righteous conservatives that have no idea what true morality is. they preach about it, but they are so corrupted. Obama is a show pony that they are pushing, with no substance. Hillary will kick everyones butt even with all the conservatives in the media still trying to hold her down. Stop trying to brainwash this country. Unfortunately, so many people obviously can’t see what is happening and are falling in blindly, next thing you know, we will have another war hungry, republican president. We might as well hang a bankrupt sign on our country and start immigrating to Canada or England.

Posted by: Shiree | February 10, 2008, 1:01 am 1:01 am

When Chelsea entered the public realm recently to campaign for her mom, you have to take stuff like this in stride. Yeah, the comment was wrong, but freedom of speech and freedom of the press trumps your demands. You’ve made your statement, now move on.

Posted by: Brent | February 10, 2008, 1:18 am 1:18 am

Imagine, this outrageaus comment was made about Obama. For good reason the word ‘racism’ would be all over the place. But calling Hillary Clinton a ‘pimp’ and her daughter basically a ‘w.’ seems to be just okay.
One more story for the press: ‘Shame on you!’
Go Hillary! Show those sexists what you are made of!

Posted by: john | February 10, 2008, 1:33 am 1:33 am

I am not a fan of MSNBC, they are too left wing as far as I am concerned. However, Hilliary having a cow about the phrase”pimped out” seems so disengenuous to me. She and Bill both, because of their political ambitions, agreed to expose a much younger and more “vulnerable” Chelsea” to all the salacious details of Bil’s sexual exploits with a very young and vulnerable Monica Lewinsky. What a farce!!! MSNBC YOU ARE WIMPS!!! HILLIARY IS UPSET AND YOU GUYS GO LICKING HER HEELS. I SAY LET THE SHOW FO ON WITHOUT HER.CALL HER OFFENDED BLUFF. POLITICAL EXPOSURE IS MORE IMPORTANT TO HER THAN HER DAUGHTER…THE PAST BEARS THIS OUT!!! DIDN;T HER HUSBAND KICK MONICA TO THE CURB?…SHE DIDN’T THINK THAT SEXIST

Posted by: Gilbert Lopez | February 10, 2008, 1:48 am 1:48 am

I didn’t really understand the comment when I saw it on TV and I certainly don’t understand why it’s so offensive to the Clinton campaign. I think they’re trying to get some sympathy votes or something.

Posted by: dem in chicago | February 10, 2008, 1:50 am 1:50 am

I watch MSNBC from time to time. Some are good; some are okay. I’ll rate my time allotted to the news as follows: 1) 60% Foxnews; 2) 30% CNN; and 10% MSNBC. I look for straight news first. I don’t think your news programs are designed that way and I only view your channel for commentaries which as a subject matter interest me the least based on my viewing habits that I just described. I was sorry I missed Mr. Shuster’s comments to know whether it was taken out of context or not. I hope you can straighten out your problem with H. Clinton and get that debate going.

Posted by: Ken | February 10, 2008, 2:18 am 2:18 am

Of course ‘freedom for the press’ is one of the pillars of democracy. But MSNBC should rethink if they really want to encourage this kind of offensive and outrageous language and this kind of sexism. If they are serious about equal rights (another pillar of democracy) they should fire Shuster now, and please grow up, you are out of kindergarten, boys!

“I don’t think President Bush reacted this strongly — at least publicly, and personally — to Dan Rather’s “Memo-Gate” scandal.”
So all this time, you guys have been this cowed by choice?
I had always hoped you were badgered into it.

Posted by: Memekiller | February 10, 2008, 2:38 am 2:38 am

I’m sure Mr. Shuster regrets making the comment, but he and the rest of the MSNBC crew (Chris Matthews especially)need to think before they speak. I usually tend to admire David Shuster’s reporting, and certainly do not want to see him fired. As to Bush not responding strongly in public to “Rathergate”, that was because he knew that Rather’s story was factual.

Posted by: Ed | February 10, 2008, 2:49 am 2:49 am

Shame on you MSNBC!! I grew up watching NBC news and now that I live in Italy I tune in on internet almost daily. Unfortunately for you, anyone with a little brain can see how biased you MSNBC has become and how you promote your pet candidates. Whatever happened to reporters telling the news instead of their interpretation of the news. I don’t care what YOU think!! I want to know the facts and decide for myself. It’s about time you come back to the roots of your profession.

Posted by: John | February 10, 2008, 4:22 am 4:22 am

it either you dont have Children or you hate Hillary so much that you would even leave her on the accident scene as soon as you realeised it was her. because when something unfair and unjust is said about someone, even someone you dont love, fairness and justice are fundamentals of democracy. this is the same reason that racism is bad, the holocaust was bad etc but here we go again, everything said is just an opportunity to attack Hillary. one wonders????? you dont have to wait for an injustice to be done to you to react, thats why the laws are there, to prevent injustices to prevented before they occur, and when the do, so as to met necessary punishment for the offenders. Bill Clinton was crucified for using fairytale and Obama in the same sentence. Not that people didnt hear the whole sentence, the described it a racial, and Bill is still paying for it. Hmmmmmm, interesting. Its like its okay to attack Hillary, but not Obama. Guess what, if Obama wins the Democratic nomination then we have McCain come January 2009. It will just take the FBI raising the alert status one notch for Americans to have a reality check. and back to earth.

All of those people working for MSNBC should go back to school to learn some manners. they should learn to respect a young lady. The way they are conducting themselvs tells me that they are not educated to be on the news. Stop your name calling and look at yourself before you start talking about another person. You should look in the mirror first and throw the first stone if you are not a sinner.

Comment from Germany:
First: Here in Germany a reporter with such a rude comment most likely would have been thrown out and i think, that would be a good idea. With his comment he helped the Clintons quite much, as many would probably think “I help this poor little girl”.
BUT (second): Chelsea Clinton is not a little child anymore.
At Feb. 8 there was a detailed report in the biggest and highly respected german newspaper “Sueddeutsche Zeitung” about the work of Chelsea Clinton (second page of the business section).
After studying in Stanford and Oxford she was employed at McKinsey in New York. She earned right at the beginning several hundred thousand Dollar per year. At the end of 2006 she changed to the HEDGE FUNDS “Avenue Capital” at Wall Street where she is CURRENTLY EMPLOYED. Her annual salery is estimated several hundred thousand Dollar.
Here in Germany someone like Chelsea is considered as a true lobbyist. Very interesting for germans, maybe also for US citizens and it seems that this is not commonly known.
In germany many of these hedge funds are responsible for the unnecassary asset stripping of many companies and the loss of thousands of jobs.

Quite frankly, this did it for me! I used to love MSNBC but since the fiasco with Don Imus, Scarborought’s put downs of Miika, allowing Chris Mathews biased commentaries and now this!..I’m done with it. I’m going to stick with C-span and Jim Lehrer Hr. for news..I can listen, interpret for myself rather than a pundit’s biased interpreation.

“I don’t think President Bush reacted this strongly — at least publicly, and personally — to Dan Rather’s “Memo-Gate” scandal.”
He didn’t need to. His surrogates did it for him — and Dan Rather, a star at CBS for decades, was forced out of his job in disgrace. I’d say Shuster is getting off easy

I remember from years ago that salome had asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter and of course it was delivered as requested. Is this what Hillary wants? God, how blood thirsty can a woman be.

Posted by: Ralph Garner | February 10, 2008, 8:55 am 8:55 am

It’s obvious to most observers that Hillary is upset because she feels your network has turned traitor on her after all the years you were defending the Liars from Arkansas. How dare you do that.

Posted by: JR | February 10, 2008, 9:30 am 9:30 am

I seem to remember a time just before the presidential race started in which Hillary’s campaign was shutting the media out and giving very little access to her to such an extent that it appeared that she was just openly hostile to the media. Now she’s asking the same media to bow to her demands?

Posted by: Jamie | February 10, 2008, 11:02 am 11:02 am

Shuster used a phrase that is in todays cultural lexicon. The fact that the Clinton’s are going after the verbage and not the Facts is why it’s just another Clinton political game.

Posted by: David | February 10, 2008, 11:02 am 11:02 am

1.) Interpretations aside, where in the letter did she ask for Shuster to be fired? There are tons of interpretations you can take out of the letter, requesting he be fired is one, taking him off the campaign trail is another, re-assignig him to another position until the election ends is another. Of course though, Tapp the Hack interprets the most unflattering for HRC.
2.) If he were fired it would be becasue Capus wanted to send a message that the other purveyors of misoginistic comments must stop and this was the straw that broke the camels back. Capus may figure that Spit Muchews is the biggest offender but the language used by Shuster and the fact that he is a hack reporter for a show that has almost run its course gives him a good out to send a message and posisbly get in the good graces of the next president.
3.) Of course it was half hearted. He should have apologized for being a pitiful journalist as well. There is absolutely nothing unseemly about the 30 year old daughter of the former president of the and possible future president to lobby Super Delegates on behalf of her mother. So, not only was the language he used inappropriate, the premise of his thought was utterly stupid and politcally naive. Maybe he shouldn’t be covering elections. Hell, Romney’s boys didn’t go to war becasue they were trying to help diddy get elected. How did that work for them and their inheritance? Was it unseemly for them to go out and campaign on behalf of their dad? He really was pimping them out, “Just think of all the money we lose boys if daddy’s investment doesn’t pay off in 2008 and I have to do it all over again in 2008″? Maybe Shuster can go write that book.
4.) Everything every politician does is to galvanize their base and get them to the polls. Tap the Hack portrays Clinton as Count Calcula in a league of her own when John McCain is the biggest out-right bamboozler of the press corps and the voters in this race. Check out Matt Welch’s McCain “The Myth of a Maverick” for many of McCain’s passes from the media. Mavericks aside, HRC sent this letter in the hopes that they may tone down their anti-everything Clinton bias and possibly put a hold on the swoon they have for Obama. She may have trouble with the latter but lets hope she makes some headway on the former.

Posted by: SEERYER | February 10, 2008, 12:01 pm 12:01 pm

I think it’s interesting that the author choose to provide a link to the most abject apology while providing Clinton’s comments to the indifferent “apology” that was originally provided. Another example of bias.
Check out the “apology” on Morning Joe, Shuster referred to it as a housekeeping chore.

Posted by: K | February 10, 2008, 2:27 pm 2:27 pm

YOU DON”T GET IT!!!
Shuster need to be FIRED and that is my right to say and go after GE advertizers for the blantant sexism being promoted on MSNBC.
Keep it up…the media serves us and since women is over 50% and a prime target base of advertisers that take our money to pay for those over blown arrongant windbags on MESSNBC.
It’s too bad you don’t like how parents responds when they get mad and want this jerk FIRED and the rest put on notice that we are watching you and the next time this happen…you are gone too.
I don’t give a rat azz about Shuster career…he’s a sexist jerk and deserve what is coming to him.
My daughter means more to me and when she ask questions about why the men are so nasty, I say don’t worry they won’t be on TV anymore.

I’m a female and support the Obama campaign. I do agree with Senator Clinton the word was inappropriate. I do agree MSNBC has taken the necessary action in this case. However, for every action it’s not necessary for a reaction. It really shows Hillary is in a desperate state at the moment. She is so focused on this non-sense while Obama campaign is kicking her butt. So, if I was her adviser, I would suggest to her — to focus on the bigger picture (win the election). If Hillary loses the nominee, it is possible she will come back after MSNBC. So, be prepared for the Clintons, they will say anything and do anything!

Has anyone seen the issue being discussed in the past Sunday’s Meet the Press? None but Gwen I raised and discussed the David S issue very rationally. You should have seen the faces of Tim R and Chuck T!!! That spoke something about their professional journalism. Shame on you, NBC reporters.

Posted by: Jkan | February 11, 2008, 10:51 am 10:51 am

First Clinton has all the right to get mad, NBC is totally wrong!
They openly support Obama, thus tilting the news for him, hey was not one of there reporters caught on tape saying such!
yes the word was not used in the meaning it normally is but used to describe marketing but again leave the daughter out of attacks,
Though if Chelsea is campaigning she should answer questions pertaining to the campaign by reporters and especially if they are 9 years old.
Now to show you hypocrisy, if the reporter said that about a republicans daughter, the reporter would be given a promotion!
