McCain Attacks Obama on Earmarks
ABC News’ Bret Hovell Reports: Senator John McCain, R-Ariz., called on one of his democratic rivals for the White House, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., to disclose how much money Obama has allocated in so-called earmark spending while in Congress.
"The Senator from Illinois, who says that he wants transparency in government, will not reveal the number of earmarks that he received in 2006 and 2005," McCain told a crowd of supporters Thursday in Burlington, Vermont. "Is that transparency in government? I don’t think so."
Watch the VIDEO HERE.
It was the second day in a row that McCain attacked Obama, signaling both Obama’s success in his field and McCain’s decision to direct his focus towards the general election contest.
Earmarks refer to specific spending items that members of Congress can insert into legislation. Eliminating earmarks has been a continuing theme of McCain’s campaign and career in the Senate. He says regularly on the stump that he has never asked for or received an earmark project.
"My friends, examine my record on earmark and pork barrel projects, and you will see a big fat zero," he said today in Vermont.
Speaking with reporters Wednesday in Washington, D.C., McCain singled out Obama for not providing many details on his policy proposals, and instead using broad generalities on the stump. He reiterated that attack in Burlington.
"I haven’t seen a lot of details on many of Obama’s proposals – in fact, very little detail," he said.

If it is true that he had been doing cocaine or crack cocaine back then, then he has lied to the American people and his autobiography is nothing more than fabrication about his drug use being limitedto teenage years.

The money for Obama’s earmarks will pale in comparison to what we’ll have to spend to keep troops in Iraq for a hundred years. Does McCain really want to get into a fight over spending?

My doctor said today that any man who votes to permit late-term aborted babies that are born alive to be killed, is not a Christian.
Martin Luther King was a Republican. He would be turning in his grave if he knew how little Mr. Obama values the sanctiy of life. Mr. King stood for values and respect of children and the unborn. Mr. Obama stands for: Abortion, killing of live babies, Gay Marriage, the legalization of marijuana.
What kind of role model is this man for our young.

I want to know how much medication McCain is on right now
Posted by: Bryan R | February 14, 2008, 1:19 pm 1:19 pm
McCain pressured the Bush Admin in 1992 for $5,000,000 in wastewater treatment money for Arizona – when he couldn’t get it into a spending bill he tried to get the EPA to fund it, but they refused. In 2002 McCain got $10,000,000 for the University of Arizona to create a new law center named after former Chief Justice Rehnquist. In 2006 he tried to get $14,000,000 into a Defense spending bill to create a “buffer zone” around Luke Air Force Base (also in Arizona), despite no support from the President or the appropriate committee. So, I guess it depends on what the meaning of “earmark” is – if you are powerful enough in the Senate, you find other ways of getting your pork projects funded.

When President Bush said that McCain fathered a black child out of wedlock, and that McCain lost his mind when he was a POW, what was he referring to?
What about the articles in the Washington Times about McCain’s temper caused fellow republican senator from Mississippi Cochran to say that McCain does not have the temperment to be president?
McCain makes Dole look young and healthy by comparison.

Yes but D, Why would this Larry Sinclair chap makes these statements and offer to take a lie detector test?
It is disturbing that the Obama camp has not responded, denied or acknowledged the “frivolous” lawsuit in any way?
Could there be some truth in these accusations? Mr. Obama’s sex life is his own business, but if he was smoking crack in 1999 that could be a problem.

The GOP slime machine has already started in on Senator Obama – just days after Senator Clinton noted that Obama had so far be spared this sick crowd’s wrath. Time to see if Obama can take the heat and return fire. But please – no false rumors and personal attacks. There is enough loonie statements on policy matters from McCain to fill 10 campaign war chests.

Relax Mark, I stated I thought it was a hoax, remember. But if it has any truth to it, don’t you agree it should a least be investigated?
Honestly if it was rumored that Mrs. Clinton was having a gay affair and doing drugs, the MSM would be on it like a buzzard on a crap wagon..lol

This Larry Sinclair “rumor”: has been around on the underground news for months. The MSM knows all about it, but would never use it against Mr. Obama. However, I know the Republicans will. They play very dirty, and Mr. Obama will have to at least address this rumor to clear his name.
Silence is not an option. The repubs will have much more “dirt” coming up.

McCain hitting Obama on earmarks, and as one poster noted above, Obama responding about wasted resources going into Iraq for a hundred years are fine. I’m confident the candidates will keep their barbs at that level.

I just read the entire Sinclair v. Obama complaint (it is Smokinggun). So, Mr. Sinclair goes on YouTube and makes allegations against Obama, then files a lawsuit asking for an injunction against Obama and the DNC preventing them from making any comments about him and stopping them from investigating Mr. Sinclair? He alleges a 1st Amendment violation – which is impossible because Obama and the DNC are not the government or agents of the government. Finally – Mr. Sinclair is actin as his own attorney (if there was any merit to his claim, don’t you think some enterprising lawyer would take up his cause, at least for the publicity?). This lawsuit (filed February 11) is going to get tossed at the first hearing. p.s. I’m an attorney.
Posted by: D | February 14, 2008, 2:03 pm 2:03 pm
I agree. Can you imagine what we could be doing with the money that we are spending in Iraq? McCain would probably be better than Bush, but Obama would be a change that this country really needs right now. Don’t fall fod the republican swift-boating.
Posted by: mike | February 14, 2008, 2:09 pm 2:09 pm
To D. I don’t think Larry Sinclair’s objective was to win this lawsuit. I think it was an attempt to make this more public and legitimate putting pressure on the Obama campaign. Remember, if you push too hard against powerful men, sometimes you wind up hurt or dead. Seriously D, what lawyer in his right mind would take this case right now?? Way too hot to handle.

That a religious belief is the basis for denying the right of a woman to choose as to wether or not she will bear a child is more than enough reason to invalidate any potential legislation to deny a wamn that right. I am personally against abortion. Most of the pro-choice advocates I know are not pro-abortion under any circumstances. The issue is not abortion, the issue is whehter or not the government gets to tell you what you do with your body. I think that abortions after 12 weeks should not be permitted, a fetus has not significantly matured and that it is enough time to come to a calm and rational decision. To permit the government to have the final say on suh an issue is to open the door to the government having a say as to who may breed and who may not. Making premarital or other than marital sex illegal. If you think that is far fetched, look to the FISA statutes, originally set to allow for monitoring of foriegn powers regarding known threats, it has been subverted to accomdate domestic warrantless tapping of all electronic communication, without recourse, and now the President would have without any accountability. Giving the government so much power is inherently stupid, and inherently dangerous. I find it amusing that the party for less government would so willingly give up so many personal freedoms.

Jordan – actually I think it might be a little premature for Obama to respond to this Sinclair thing. I don’t know anything about it – just read here its some lawsuit. Responding to it just draws attention to it. I guess its a balancing act. You don’t want to let any damaging claim go unchallenged, but you also don’t want to advertise every attack – the serious ones and the nutcase ones alike.
Like I said, I don’t know anything about Sinclair, and his allegations may be serious. But at the moment, they’re not politically serious, I don’t think.
Posted by: Paul | February 14, 2008, 2:17 pm 2:17 pm
Paul, I do agree with you. There is a very delicate balance here. Like I have stated before, it sounds more like a hoax, but if left festering too long, it could cause more damage later if Mr. Obama becomes the Democratic nominee. The Republicans will use this any anything else they can get their hands on to destroy Mr. OBama, or even Mrs. Clinton should she become the nominee.

Your right Stella, if this Monica Lewinsky they would have it all over the news.
Did any of you watch Tucker Carlson last night. Boy was he anti-hillary. I thought the news was suppose to be un-biased and fair news reporting.
He actually gave the Black Panther Fist in defiance of Hillary Clinton to AL Sharpton right there on National TV. He said “Power to the People” right Mr. Sharpton. And he was snickering when he said this with that smirky look, like he was proud of himself. This was all to do with AL SHARPTON saying that he is doing all in his power so HIllary Clinton does not get the delegates from Florida and Michigan.
I actually called MSNBC Complaint line to complain about his negativity and rudeness to Mrs. Clinton.
The whole show was about knocking her down.
It was really disgusting.
I called the Stephanie Miller show this morning and actually got on the radio to let them know of my disgust for this man and MSNBC in their bias reporting on Mrs. Clinton.
Of course, Miss Miller thought nothing was wrong with that and laughed it off.
She is so Pro-Obama it is disgusting too.
Oh! and by the way, before any of you Obama people think that I am a HIllary supporter, I AM NOT!!! I respect life and I respect the little babies rights. I am a Catholic and believe me alot, and I mean alot of the Catholics are voting Replublican this year because of our faith and our morals. And contrary to the lies the Obama is saying that Republicans are coming up to him and whispering in his ear, that “they are going to vote for him”, that too is a lie and a fbaricaiton. Just in my small circle of friends….ALOT… and i mean ALOT>>>>>>>>of the christians and Catholics have not even voted in the primaries/…….their all for McCain.

Michelle Obama had a $150.00 per person luncheon for her husband, so that he could help pass a law that would kill late-birth aborted babies that were born alive.
He(Mr. Obama) voted for it three times to pass, and thank God the fourth time it came up in Illinois, he wasn’t around, so the law stayed the same to protect these babies.
Obama is a murderer and so is his wife.
Sure, we want a First Lady like this for our country.
Michelle is all about her $2,000,000.00 home and her $600,000.00 lot adjacent to her $2,000,000.00 home. She is so pretentious. She will do all she can to get to the white house. Again, these people call themselves Christian.
In the meantime, Obama’s grandmother whom raised him and supported him lives in a hut in Kenya with no electricity.
And he brags all the time during his speeches that when he becomes president he will take care of the people in Africa.
Heh! Obama how about us! Doesn’t your Trinity Church already take care of that Country.

Why is it that 10 years ago almost all republicans thought global-warming was a hoax? Today, thanks to Al Gore many are starting to believe we do have a problem. I can only imagine how much better off we would be today had they counted all the votes back in 2000. At least today we have some real hope with some forward thinking candidates. Mary, watch out for that Train!

stella – you can believe what you want, but that doesn’t make it true. I have no idea why the media aren’t reporting this Sinclair lawsuit (although it is on Smokinggun for anyone to read). It was filed February 11, so Obama has some time to respond (I’m not familiar with the timelines in Illinois). I suspect he will move to have it dismissed. Remember, anyone can make an allegation. Mr. Sinclair hasn’t produced anything close to proof as far as I know. Don’t you think it is a bit suspicioud that Mr. Sinclair is filing a lawsuit to get an injunction against people trying to investigate his claim?
Posted by: D | February 14, 2008, 3:09 pm 3:09 pm
I am afraid D is right about the lawsuit, and I believe that he should get his fair day in court as should every person on God’s green earth. Of course that is probably beside the point as many poster’s on her believe that it is the media that should judge this case rather than the legal system. Guys if you believe in our justice system, which may be a stretch for some of you, then why don’t you see how this plays out. If you think Obama gets a free pass, why don’t you guys go over to the website the RealMcCain, and see how much of a free pass that Mr McCain gets for his so called straight talk express. And when you counter with the Rezko thing about Obama I will raise you a Keating 5. Most of these are attempts a character defamation rather than substantial stories. These are meant to get knee-jerk reactions because many in our society live in the moment rather than thinking long term. Look if you believe that McCain is a better candidate or Clinton is better candidate then tell us why other than using innuendo and gotcha moments. I am afraid that our country needs alot more help than that and to pretend that this type of stuff is substantial ignores the larger issue that this country is facing.

CUBAN flag – It wasn’t “his office”. It wasn’t even an official Obama campaign office, there is no evidence that anyone officially connected to the national Obama campaign knew about the flag, and the Obama campaign has stated that the flag was “inappropriate”. Nice try, but stop lying.

Dear Cuban Flag: I went to that site you mentioned. I am sick to my stomach.
What are we dealing with here! This Obama man is disgusting.
We need to impeach him before he becomes president;
His issues:
Okay to kill babies.
okay to abort babies.
okay to do cocaine and crack
okay to intimidate individuals whom want answers from you, like the allegations brought on by Sinclair and your Rezko dealings.
okay for Gay marriage
okay for you and your goons to intimidate Mr. Sinclair
okay to steal health plan program of hillary clinton and call it your own
okay to belong to a black church and live by the black rules of that church, and your church damns the jews
okay to have the most “RACIST” organization in the world “The Black Panther Organization” support your campaign, and it’s on your site
okay for yor church to give Farrakhan an award…a racist mongor among all men.
okay to lie to the AMerican people in your two books
okay to claim your not a muslim,
and we can go on, and on, and on.

Josh, with all due respect. If someone running for the highest office in our land is lying about his background and drug use, I think it is a very important factor in deciding if we should choose to vote for that person. It brings up serious character flaws. Honesty for one, and the question of: Is the drug use still relevant and continuing?

Mike: Sorry to inform you but your lack of judgment should be tested.
You are undoubtedly blinded by this Obama and cannot look beyond your nose.
Get real! Get the true facts! This man is not presidential material.
He is a liar, a drug user and a fake!!!
He is stealing all of HIllary’s plans. He stole her health plan, and now is is stealing her college program. He now is offering 4,000,00 to each child that goes to college and they have to do public service if this money is given to them. THAT IS HILLARY”S PLAN”. She presented this plan in the beginning of her campaign. He stole it!!!!!!!
I will admit I was a Hillary supporter, but I switched over to McCain because of my religious values.
I’m sorry, but that who I am.
I am a christian, and I will remain that. I know in my hear whom I am suppose to vote for. SO there!!!!
Posted by: stevem | February 14, 2008, 3:30 pm 3:30 pm
stevem, Hillary and Barack are very similar politically so it makes sense that a lot of their policies are going to overlap. It’s 4,000 not 4,000,00 for college, and wouldn’t that make a lot more sense than sending the money to Iraq. As for voting for McCain and being a Christian, does your religion approve of the death-penalty? Does your religion include destroying the environment for our children and grandchildren? Does your religion approve of depriving children of healthcare? You need to examine all your beliefs…

Okay, I just googled Sinclair. First off, the only references that came up on the first page of returns were blogs. Sorry, but it ain’t a serious political charge until it makes at least Drudge or a tabloid paper or something.
Second, being a blog rumor doesn’t make it false, though many will see it that way at first blush. I’ll bet I can find blogs saying Obama is an extraterrestrial, too – and that’s how most people would see this, if they ever hear about it.
So in short I wouldn’t recommend Obama address this. If the rumor takes off, he may have to. But it isn’t there yet.

I agree with U Spam. Something is wrong with so many of our presidents middle names.
Bill Clinton’s middle name is Jefferson? Who gives a kid a last name for a middle name? Actually a lot of presidents have last names for middle names. Look at Dubya’s middle name – Walker. His dad had two middle names, Herbert Walker. JFK had Fitzgerald. I don’t know what the heck Nixon’s middle name is supposed to mean – Milhouse? FDR had Delano?
I mean, who gives kids names like these? Do these parents somehow know their kids will someday be immortalized in presidential portrails. Or do they become presidents to get back at all they beatings they take growing up because of their odd middle names?
Anyway, compared to John or Robert, Hussein is just odd enough to sound, well, presidential.

Whosoever is free of sin throw the first stone to Mr. Obama or his family.
We can not expect an overnight makeover on our loving bleeding America, but I assure you that with the same speed in which internet goes, if we were to go in case by case of precedent cases that are used to justify judgements we will see the truth reached with lies.
We are to pray for our next President so that he be enriched with wisdom from above and not from beneath.
Take heed America, even walls have ears and the holes where foxes hide are going to be open! Let’s take care of our country with dilligence. Please bring down the walls that are only separating peoples rights and needs.
Let’s leave the hipocrisy and acknowledge truth. At the end we will be glad we did.
And remember is not about judging justice, is about giving to Cesar what belongs to Cesar…Take heed, stand and have honor and life.

This may very well be the most mportant election in our lifetimes. It certainly will be historic–an intelligent, intriguing Black man, a seasoned, skillful woman, a Republican war hero–all vying to become our next President.
A lot of comments have the basic thrust that even discussing issues related to personal behavior are tantamount to baiting –race-baiting, liberal-baiting, conservative-baiting.
I say, let’s put all questions on the table. Vet then all. If in fact, Mr. Obama is the hope for us all, then he will have no objection to answering sincere questions concerning whether he has used cocaine more recently, as Mr. Sinclair claims. Whether recent or not, it is probably an illegal act, perhaps even a felony.

Obama race bates after NH and you don’t think that is fear mongering? Then how did all those African Americans that were voting for Hillary switch so quickly? And benefit Obama. Shocking how that just happened to work out in his favor. Did Obama do anything different like offer ideas or plans that would help that community? No. Obama is a race baiter that took advantage of fear and hatred that he himself created. Sick, shameful and he should be thrown out of the race for it. And things come around that go around. I think Rezko and Larry Sinclair will show the voters what a liar Obama is. Shame on Obama.

Obama is a serious chain smoker. His wife has been trying to get him to quick for years. My mother saw a photo of him a few weeks ago smoking next to his campaign manger in the back of a room.
And your right if Hillary did this the media would stop the world to tell the story. When Hillary was first lady I remember hearing about when Kings would come to the WH and they started to smoke inside. Hillary would stop them and tell them they had to step outside. And they did. Can you image telling a king that? I like the way Hillary takes a stand.

Did anyone forget about NAFTA under the Clintons.” The American people has lost almost one million jobs, and Bill Clinton want to say it was a mistake. Yea, only if you have got caught in your lies. Or did you forget about when Bill became President, Hillary had 8 years to fix healthcare, instead, they were involved in the “Whitewater” scandal. C DEPP it is a lot more to the Clintons, and I advise you to study your history books. You been watching too much TV. So what Barack blows smoke, and what hidden sin is in your closet. Yes a president suppose to set standards, and the cocaine is just rumors. Stop being so judgemental, because they all lie, Hillary lie better, and they all take our tax dollars. Hillary do not want to reach out among both parties and she has presented the attitude to go into office to fight the Republicans. This certainly want accomplish anything. Don’t be hung by your tongue on fals allegations that has no merits.

Issie – Hillary is anti-NAFTA. It’s a hoot that she will probably undo her husbands legislation. For someone who had a non-paying position, she did make changes in health care by just trying to change it. My premiums were reduced by $220/month because she brought the subject to the public forum. I worked free-lance audio in the capitol during that time (paid my own health insurance) and she really tried to get health care legislation through, but if you remember, she was really put down by many politicos from both sides, lobbyists, forums and news orgs for not being a senator or not having been hired and especially the fact that “no one voted for her, they voted for her husband”. It had to be with some satisfaction that she became a senator. She has been cleared of Whitewater and since the opposing faction didn’t bring the Clintons down by doing that, they moved on to putting Ken Starr on the payroll to really humiliate and embarrass the president, his family and the rest of America. I don’t know how anyone could lead during that time but Pres. Clinton did. The sad thing is that when either side plays this game against the other side, it certainly is hurtful to the recipient of such slings and arrows, but the real hurt of all this infighting in our government is all of us. When everyones eyes are on the scandal what is going on elsewhere?
