McCain vs Obama…Cindy vs Michelle, That Is
ABC News’ Jennifer Parker, Bret Hovell and Sunlen Miller Report: Michelle Obama, the wife of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., Wednesday attempted to clarify remarks she made Tuesday about being proud of the country.
Michelle Obama has been criticized for the comments, with some suggesting her remarks were unpatriotic.
Campaigning in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Monday, Michelle Obama said, "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change."
In a rare move, Cindy McCain, wife of the Arizona senator, took on Michelle Obama’s comment Tuesday as she introduced her husband at a rally. "I’m proud of my country, I don’t know if you heard those words earlier. I’m very proud of my country," she said.
The Arizona senator also made a subtle dig at Michelle Obama’s comments during his victory speech Tuesday night.
"I have never lived a day, in good times or bad, that I haven’t been proud of the privilege" of being an American, McCain said in Columbus, Ohio.
In interviews on Wednesday, Michelle Obama attempted to clarify her remarks.
"What I was clearly talking about was that I’m proud in how Americans are engaging in the political process," she told WJAR in Rhode Island today.
"For the first time in my lifetime, I’m seeing people rolling up their sleeves in a way that I haven’t seen and really trying to figure this out – and that’s the source of pride that I was talking about," she added.
Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., was asked about Michelle Obama’s comments during an interview today and she stressed how proud she was of the country.
"You know, I’ve been proud a lot of America," Clinton said during an interview with WJAR Wednesday. "I think we’ve all been disappointed in our country. But I’ve been proud of America on many occasions during my lifetime."
Senator Obama also attempted to clarify his wife’s remarks Tuesday and expressed frustration that his wife’s comments had become political fodder.
"Statements like this are made and people try to take it out of context and make a great big deal out of it, and that isn’t at all what she meant," Obama said during an interview on WOAI radio in San Antonio, Texas.
"What she meant was, this is the first time that she’s been proud of the politics of America," he said. "Because she’s pretty cynical about the political process, and with good reason, and she’s not alone. But she has seen large numbers of people get involved in the process, and she’s encouraged."
The reaction by McCain’s wife Tuesday has taken many people aback.
Cindy McCain has generally stayed out of the political fire and spent much of last year telling audiences that her first reaction to the idea that her husband might enter the presidential race was “No!” But she stood next to him during a press conference after the Tuesday rally.
The two were asked what they thought of Obama’s comments, and if Cindy was responding to them directly?
“I don’t think we have any comment on that, do we?” McCain said Tuesday, looking at his wife. “Do you have any comment?”
“I just wanted to make the statement that I have and will always be proud of my country,” she replied.
Cindy McCain was given another opportunity later in the day in Columbus, Ohio, to amp up what one veteran campaign reporter called a “spousal spat.” Did Cindy McCain intend for her remarks to “tweak” Michelle Obama?
“Well really all it was about is I always have been and will always be extremely proud of my country. I’ve led a very fortunate life. It was nothing more than that. I’m just very proud to be an American,” Cindy Mccain said.
Somewhat subdued, perhaps, for the drama-hungry press corps.
But if the general election turns into a McCain-Obama match, maybe it was an opening skirmish in the battle between each candidate’s biggest supporters.
ABC News’ Kate Snow contributed reporting. This report was updated to include Michelle Obama’s attempt Wednesday to clarify her remarks.

I’m with Michelle all the way!!! I was NOT proud to be an American UNDER BUSH! I was ashamed of my country’s leadership, Iraq, our rights being ripped away along with the Constitution. The moment I realized that Obama just might be the next President, I different. Proud. Proud of what we will show the world when we elect OBAMA. A Texan for Obama ALL THE WAY!

Obama talks alot about national health care but the rich have right offs the middle class mostly white will pay taxes to have the health care plan an the blacks an latinos will be the ones to benefit from this, no thanks. There are too many uneducated white Americans that are voting for Obama.
Bush was bad as President but McCain has moreexpreience than Obam Hillary an Busch combined

I think that Michelle made an innocent comment. I think she is just very proud of her husband. Cindy McCain should just keep her mouth SHUT the same way she has been, or somebody will start talking about her past.

Michelle shouldn’t be proud of the fact she got into Princeton and Harvard through Affirmative Action, not by her grades. Stepping over qualified people is nothing to be proud of.

This just shows how cocky the OBAMAs are getting.

Why is it everyone is all for freedom of speech as long as it is speech that they like. I am 40 years old this year, and I have to say, there has not been a lot to be proud of from the office of the President for the last 22 years. Scandals and lies, promises of prosperity followed by realities of debt and despair. It is no one President’s fault, but here we are. She believes in her husband and has great reason to do so. She should stand by what she said.

I am sure Michelle Obama did not mean to say what everyone is making what all the news broadcast are trying make it sound like she was not patriotic, well to to even let your family be put through the scrutiny and lies I’d say you have to be very patriotic. And as for Cindy McCain she can finally step out from behind her husband to say something he will need her to help get their party behind him because he still has memebers of his party that are not totally behind him yet.He has done some flip flopping of his own.

Michelle Obama has spent all her adult life working for those who have never seen the American Dream. She’s a good woman, an intelligent lawyer, and she’ll make a wonderful First Lady!

After saw CNN news,Michelle Obama the day before. On Monday, she told a Wisconsin audience that
For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country, because it feels like hope is making a comeback…. not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change.”
I am shocked, Isn’t it should be proud of your country no matter what?
this woman is hungry for power, I have really doubt that she is love this country, I can not imagine if Obama elected, what will happen next!!! I am not American but live in America, I think I love America more than her, I am not American yet, but I can not stand for this statement, I just hardly understand American voter why vote for this Obama family who even do not love their country unconditionally???

I for one am a proud American. I find it very sad that because a person invests so much hate for our president they cannot see the greatness this country has. I see greatness everyday in the people I meet in my town daily. I believe that this country is “We the people” not the president or any branch of government. I am “we the people” and find the remark very offensive.

This is the second time I’ve heard Michelle Obama make a disparaging comment that sounds divisive. First, she says she’ll have to think about whether she’ll vote for the other democratic candidate if her husband loses in the primaries and then she says is only now proud of her country because of her husband’s lead in the democratic primary. It comes off bad and she’s obviously too intelligent to say these comments were a slip of the tongue. I will vote for whichever democrat wins the primaries, but the Obama camp is really starting to make feel like I will have to hold my nose before I vote if that candidate is Obama.

Why so many people still think Michelle Obama made an innocent comment???
If Obama elected she is first lady, her word will represent America.
If you are Amerian, You can point out the problems in this country, people together make this country strong, But no matter what kind of president or what kind of situation, you should always love your country.
OH, by the way I agree with you RON, You can judge a politician by judging his wife.

Michelle misspoke. Big deal. We ALL know what she MEANT to convey, and we ALL know that she is NOT “unpatriotic.”
Be sure to carefully examine the (hyper-partisan) motives of anyone who tries to spin this non-story otherwise.

Michelle and Cindy have the right to say whatever they feel. If one has been proud of their country forever, good for her and if the other has just become proud, good for her. In all honesty I haven’t been 100% proud of this country in the past seven to ten years myself. Get a life all of you out there who has nothing better to do with your time than try to make someone look as small as you must be feeling.

Cindy Lou Hensley grew up in affluent circumstances in Phoenix, Arizona, the daughter and only child of James and Marguerite Hensley, who founded Hensley & Company in 1955. She attended Madison Meadows Elementary and was a rodeo queen in 1968. She went to Central High School in Phoenix. She graduated from the latter in 1972, having been a cheerleader there.
Hensley received her undergraduate degree in education and a masters in special education from the University of Southern California. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. There she participated in a movement therapy pilot program that laid the way for a standard treatment for severely disabled children; she published the work Movement Therapy: A Possible Approach in 1978. Declining a role in the family business, she then began a special education teaching career working with disabled children at Agua Fria High School in Avondale, Arizona.
Not to mention:
She founded and ran the American Voluntary Medical Team from 1988 to 1995, which organized trips for medical personnel to provide emergency care to disaster-struck or war-torn third-world areas.
So no, she wasn’t a law student, but I would say that the use of her free time and wealth has been for a much better cause than some…

This is ridiculous!
We will look at anything to try and get an edge in politics? What about talking about policy?
To tell the truth.. I am not particularly “proud” of my country when we are more concerned with minor mis-statements than we are with the issues.
ShaTry this … Get up in front of a group of people and try NOT to stick your foot in your mouth. Judging by a lot of comments in this blog .. I think a lot of you would have trouble with that.

I am a Libertarian and with the democrats on the chopping block, I’d rather vote for the green party than a non experienced give away artist.
My vote goes to John McCain, this election is far too important for the safety of Americans and the free world to let some liberal freedom robbing democrat lead the way to the poor terrorist run country we would then give to our children.
McCain 2008.

Furthermore, Michelle founded and ran a community service organization here in Chicago. If she wasn’t proud of her country, she wouldn’t have devoted time and effort into bettering impoverished neighborhoods in Chicago. Last time I checked, Chicago was in the United States of America.

I remember being proud of my country as a child, but by the time we finally got out of Vietnam shame had set in. Like Michelle Obama, I have never once – no, not once – felt proud of my country since then, and I have grieved the fact that my children were brought into a decaying society. What is there to be proud of? Look at where we find ourselves – we are a country that attacks a sovereign nation without provocation. We intrude in the politics of other countries and are known as the world’s bully. Our debt burden is greater than any country in the history of the world, and with more and more jobs being shipped out, we are going to have to pay that debt by delivering pizza to one another, as a famous comic once said. Need I go on? Oh, yeah, there are those of you who will say we are the most generous people in the world – never mind the fact that many countries give a greater percentage of their gross than we do. Our health care costs more than anyone else’s and our infant mortality is higher than some. And I’m just getting started. Our young women walk down the street dressed like only hookers would dress in the ’60′s. We need to examine our values individually and societally and commit to building a new America, and we can do it. Obama offers the inspiration we need, and I’m slowly overcoming my own cynicism as I listen to him speak.

Michelle Obama should have kept her big mouth shut. It is a disgrace for a person her age and who has used the freedoms of this country to stand up and say that the only time she has ever been proud of this country is when her husband is running for President.
God Help Us if he were to somehow win.
He he gets the Democratic Nomination most democrats will be voting for Mcain. Which is even worse than Bush.

Throughout the inglorious reign of George W. Bush, I have remained exceptionally proud of my country — of its citizens, its soldiers, its first-responders, and its remarkable, sustained goodwill and compassion toward all humankind — but I have been UTTERLY APPALLED, DISMAYED and OUTRAGED at the corruption, malfeasance, incompetence and illegality of my BushCheneyRove federal government.

Yeah, I too am very proud of a country that invaded a sovereign nation over a lie. Yeah, and oh so proud of a country that let a city like New Orleans sit and fester while people died and the culture that once was there has been changed forever. Cindy McCain, of course she can be proud of her country, when you have all the advantages at her age. I bet she never had to worry about what drinking fountain to use or being able to sit inside a restaurant back in the 50s and 60s or riding in the back of a bus or wondering when the next cross was going to be burned on her grandparent’s lawn. I bet she could always walk right through the front door of a hotel. I bet she never got called the n-word for no damn reason right ?
“I’ve been proud of my country !!” Yes great words, depending on your honesty and your personal experience in this country.

People are saying that Michelle does not love her country. Can anyone tell me where she said she did not LOVE America. You can not be proud of something and still love it. If your child gets caught stealing…you are not proud he/she done that but you still love them. Let’s not try to spin this into something that she did not mean.

I love this country, but I’ve not been proud to exchange my increasingly worthless dollars for euros and other currencies. Thanks to Bush’s war that has saddled us with massive budget deficits, we’ve flooded the world with our dollars. Are you proud of that Cindy McCain?
Posted by: Enrique | February 19, 2008, 8:37 pm 8:37 pm
Even When Carter was President and we were in despare as a nation, I was still proud of my country. I wonder, shouldn’t Michelle be proud that we won the cold war….we are sending billions to Africa for AIDS relief….we defeated communism and the Berlin wall came down freeing millions. I think the only reason she feels pride is that she sees a real chance for power.

Cindy was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. She can’t relate to the average American who doesn’t live a priviledged life. How dare she question Michelle’s patriotism?
Posted by: Enrique | February 19, 2008, 8:40 pm 8:40 pm
Michelle Obama’s comments were incredibly stupid, but I think they reflect the attitude of the average IVY LEAGUE graduate. She and her fellow elites enjoy all of the advantages that our free, capitalist society provides, yet they have nothing but contempt for the country that has given them these blessings.
Her husband Barry is unbearably arrogant, and most dangerously, is unconsciously incompetent – he is honestly too stupid to realize how much he doesn’t know. Beyond that, anyone who believes he can “heal the country’s soul” is not to be trusted.
Posted by: ds | February 19, 2008, 8:41 pm 8:41 pm
Some of these posts are missing the statement…first time she is proud in her wholde 40 PLUS years not in the last 8 years under Bush. That kind of scares me. I am 40 plus, and there have been countless times I was a proud American. She shouldn’t be in OUR WHITE HOUSE IF that is her true beliefs.
Posted by: Maria | February 19, 2008, 8:43 pm 8:43 pm
I hope Michelle Obama meant otherwise, but seeing how she has not yet corrected the interpretation, it would appear the interpretation is correct.
If she prefers another country she should go there along with others. We have our faults, but what a terrible comment to make.
I have lived outside the country and European government is far inferior. This is the greatest nation on Earth and nothing less.

I think we can all say that at times we have been dissapointed in our country. Doesn’t mean we don’t love and respect our country WE just have the courage and the intelligence unlike some people (many whom seem to be on this post) to recognize that there are many areas in which this country needs to improve and should work hard to do so.

While she loves her country, Barack Obama supporters have to admit that Michelle Obama mouth got ahead of her brain.
Michelle Obama’s “For the first time in my adult lifetime I am really proud of my country”, not only alienate some Democrats but “fire up and ready to go” those reluctant conservatives to vote for war hero John McCain.
The Cindy McCain incident is an example of how the Republicans will use Michelle Obama statement to motivate their conservative base with 30 seconds commercials whether is fair or not.

Michelle unintentionally misspoke — you know, just like Junior Bush has every hour on the hour for the last 7.5 years.
Cindy *intentionally* inserted herself quite awkwardly and unconvincingly into the middle of this pathetic non-story to score cheap political points.
But at the end of the day, it truly matters not; those who’ll buy into this claptrap are either hardcore Clintoneers, or they planned to vote for George W. McCain anyway.

She can’t claim it was a slip of the tongue because she said it in two different speeches, AND in one of the speeches she left out the word “really” in front of “proud.”

Michelle shouldn’t have said that, but it will pass, I think. In the general election, the Republicans will try to use it, and if it goes anywhere, Obama will make an appeal to McCain to keep wives out of it – keep the attacks on him. Obama comes out looking like the guy defending his wife. So the issue becomes a wash.

As soon as I heard Mrs. Obama’s glib remark, I thought, “that’s why you don’t want newbie Dems in office.” Because they’ll make remarks like this, that the nutjob right can sooooo easily attack. If Obama gets in, it’s going to be 4 long years of him stepping into freshman traps like this. How could she say something this dumb, even if she believes this “is the first time she’s proud of her country?” Is she really so hopelessly naive about what can and can’t be expressed in the post-Bush era? Go home Mrs. Obama, take the hint that loudmouth harpie Teresa Heinz-Kerry didn’t, and shut the hell up. Stupid, STUPID remark!

*Please* fellow Obama supporters, resist the Clintonian/Republican urge to “go low” on Cindy McCain’s issues. Respect her privacy.
Don’t sink to their level. It doesn’t reflect well upon us, or, by extension, our candidate.
Even though our opponents are attempting speciously to create an “issue” over Michelle Obama where no “issue’ actually exists, we must not permit ourselves to be dragged into the muck with them.

Ohhhh, so Cindy McCain is taking the holier than thou route? Maybe she shouldn’t have dated a married man….oh yeah, and maybe she shouldn’t have stolen drugs from charity to support her habit….maybe then she could throw a few stones. Shut up Cindy, you’re an idiot.

Mouth Piece Michelle… For some reason, this broad is reminding people of the obnoxious Theresa Heinz Kerry.. Remember First Lady wannabe, John Kerry’s Blabbing Wife, whose vocal public appearances were all but shut down by the Kerry campaign. Before it’s over, I predict the same fate for Mrs Obamanation..She is even more Radical..

Oh yeahhhh, the McCains are a fine example of right wing morality.
McCain was still married and living with his wife in 1979 while, according to The New York Times’ Nicholas Kristof, he was “aggressively courting a 25-year-old woman who was as beautiful as she was rich.” McCain divorced his wife, who had raised their three children while he was imprisoned in Vietnam, then launched his political career with his new wife’s family money.

Well, yeah, Jill, on this point I have to agree with you. Too many Democrats regrettably turned a blind eye to Clintonian subterfuge too often not to admit it now.
Ah well…better late than never.
Now, when can we expect YOU to begin admitting the truth of our many claims and grievances against GW Bush and his former rubber-stamp GOP congress? : )

Let me get this straight – Cindy (not running for president) is bad because she was addicted to drugs, but Obama (who is actually running for POTUS) is okay even though he was a big drug user.
Got it. LOLOLOL

I’m tired of liberals not being proud to be Americans. If you’re not proud of this country, don’t run for President.
Posted by: Brian York | February 19, 2008, 9:46 pm 9:46 pm
I’ve never posted before, but I feel I have to say something. I think what Obama said sounded wrong, but I don’t think she meant it that way….what’s the saying…”think before you speak,” well, she didn’t and now it’s been turned into a big deal. And about McCain, I think that there isn’t one person in this entire country that has been squeaky clean in their life. If there is, they must be a robot and not human. But then again, a robot would be created by a human, so once again, we’re back to no one being perfect.
The things that I’ve noticed with this country of ours, which I’m proud of, especially for our soldiers who fight for our freedom, no matter what the cost or how they feel…they do their job and I stand behind them! The problem is that we, as a people, think that we have to be liberal or conversative, not in between. I haven’t seen one candidate yet who has stood for the middle class. It’s always been either for the poor or the rich, and the middle class always having to pay for everyone else. Why is that? Then you wonder why there are so many people in this country that don’t want to work and provide for their kids….why should they when they can get so much for free?? And the worst thing is that children are having to pay for it…their future in our hands…Democratic or Republican…think about the people who are paying the taxes the most in this country and give the middle class a break for once. Wishful thinking on my part….I’ll just be prepared in paying even MORE taxes to cover those who don’t put in, or for those who have so much money, that we cover for them, too, because they pay people to find loopholes for them.

Posted by: Mark | February 19, 2008, 9:48 pm 9:48 pm
Cindy McCain I’m so glad you said something because now the media has to acknowledge what Michelle said. Otherwise they were trying to sweep it under the rug….just like they always do when it comes to democrat gaffes.
Posted by: Jill | February 19, 2008, 9:48 pm 9:48 pm
Lisa, if you’re referencing Laura Bush, I don’t think I agree. I think she’s been a fine First Lady. I’m not too happy with her husband, but I’ve got no problems with her.
Don’t have any problems with Cindy McCain, either. Though if I was working on his campaign, I’d try to think of a tactful way to tell her to stop looking out of the corners of her eyes when she’s on stage next to him. That’s a little creepy.
Actually, I just had a thought that she looks like someone wearing contacts when they start fitting poorly – I know, used to wear them myself. Its annoying, and I found myself looking out of the corners, because that seemed to force them back into the right position. Maybe its time to go to glasses.

Michelle said this same remark twice (in two separate speeches) and in one speech she left out the word “really.” So all this defending her is quite ridiculous. She knew exactly what she was saying, and we all know exactly what she meant.
Now I’m off to see if Obama can “save my soul.” According to Michelle he’s the only one who can.
LOL What morons.

My how some people assume things.
Obama is not good for this country. I have not voted for him just because he is black and I never will. Nor will most blacks when the general election comes up. We are going to end up with a person (Mcain) who is even worse than Bush. Yes it is possible.

What a disgraceful comment from a potential first lady that this was the first time she really felt proud of her country. What a shame! Obama wants to retreat in the face of adversity. McCain is absolutely right. Regardless of the past, Iraq is the battleground against tyranny and terror. Shame on you Michele Obama, shame on you!

Perhaps people are taking her comment out of context. My read is: For the first time in her adult life (the last ~20 yrs), she sees hope returning to a place of prominence in this country, which makes her proud of her country. Regardless of her intent, I give her a pass. I’m not voting for Cindy or Michelle or Janet or Bill or Carol.

I agree with the thought Michelle was expressing in that she hasn’t felt patriotism for this country in a long time. I am a 58 year old Texan. Born and raised here. Live in Dallas now. Believe it or not, I am John McCain’s favorite DJ. My afternoon oldies show is broadcast in his hometown and he listens whenever he’s home in Arizona. He told my boss: “Please tell (me) I listen to his show and really get a kick out of his humor.” I felt deeply honored that a man such as John McCain actually even listened to me in the first place and, to think that he thought I was funny…well, that made my entire year. I have’t had the chance to sit down and speak with John but I’d like to invite him and the nominee for the Democratic Party to spend some time on the show. Our format is not political but there are a lot of other things we could talk about. Like rock and roll. If I got a chance to speak with Senator McCain personally, I’d just like to have him explain to me what he really meant by “we’d stay in Iraq for another 100 years if we have to.” I feel pretty sure he wasn’t speaking in a literal sense. It wasn’t as if he were PLANNING to be in Iraq that long. What we have to remember is, when he answers a question about the war, we, as Americans, are not the only one’s he’s talking to. As much as I detest the current administration, I didn’t understand why Vice President Cheney got such a bum wrap for his statement that the “enemy is in their last throes.” He wasn’t saying that to the American people as much as he was saying it to the enemy. He was also sending that message to the troops who cold use a morale boost. I’m gonna follow this up in a bit. If I’m posting too much, just let me know and I’ll shut it off for the night. ;)

I get so freaking sick of everyone saying “you should love your country no matter what” and that type of naive comment.
I guess that means Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and others involved in creating our country were terrible people. They weren’t “proud” of the representation that England was providing for its colonies and decided to fight for what they believed in rather than blindly supporting mother England.
Apparently that makes the founders of our country evil “America-hating” liberals.

Since the early days of his candidacy, I have strongly felt that Obama has no love for America; the fact that his wife saw no reason to feel proud of this great nation, even one time over the last 44 years, just shows they both have disdain for the country they are so power-hungry to lead.
The Unites States of America desperately needs another Ronald Reagan, not another Jimmy Carter- and Obama is no Ronald Reagan!

But there is Something wrong with the Republicans who would put negative, where only positive lives. I would NEVER want Cindy for my first lady. Cindy is a very negative PETTY kind of person. Cindy and Hillary are two peas in a pod. Both have Republican Fathers. PETTY CINDY, HILLARY PETTY CLINTON, two-of-a-kind!

I love America, I love what it stands for, but recent events (i.e. invading other countries, torturing people, shoveling money into oil companies pockets while the economy crashes) have been completely UNAMERICAN.

Obama just spoke, and it sounded all fine and good, but it means nothing. And you can’t unite a country where half the people think differently than you. Why do liberals always think they have the magic wand to make all the political differences go away just because they’re in office. Arrogance, that’s what. Didn’t work for Clinton either. He didn’t unite the country nor did Bush. And Obama wouldn’t either. Nor will McCain when he becomes President. Quit acting like Obama is God.

I have always been proud of the United States of America. I always will be. I will be ashamed of our citizens if we elect a president who’s first lady isn’t proud of our nation. I will still be proud of my country, I just won’t be proud of her or her husband.

I do get tired of politics, though. I think of it this way: McCain’s experience and/or “maverick” attitude won’t mean diddly if he puts the wrong people in is cabinet and/or doesn’t listen to good advice. Likewise, Obama’s inexperience will evaporate overnight, if he puts the right people in his cabinet and sticks to his principles.

Michelle Obama has no right to be first lady of our great country if she is in her forties and has never found a reason to be proud of the United States. The real character of these people are starting to come out, too bad it has taken so long. Is that how it is Michelle? You are so selfish that you have never been proud of this country til a bunch of it’s misguided and misinformed residents decided to vote for your husband? Personally, I would not be proud of him. Every time someone asks him about a comment made by Hillary Clinton, he comes back with something that Bill did during his term. So, what is he saying there Michelle? That women are only defined by their husband’s actions? That women do not have minds of their own? That by electing Hillary, we would just be electing Bill, because women are incapable of independent thought? It is what is sounds like to me. Set the cause of women back about a hundred years and probably cause the biggest resurgence of white supremecy groups in this country in a century if he is elected. Yeah, he’s a lot to be proud of. No thank you. If Hillary is not nominated, I will vote for McCain. I live in the South and I have a duty to protect my children.

Be proud of your country when it deserves it. Being proud of something when it doesn’t deserve it, makes it meaningless.

Somewhere John McCain is grinning like a cheshire cat. Watch as more scrutiny comes upon Michelle now that the cat is out of the bag. I’m sure she’s said other extremely offensive things that will be unearthed now. This is getting exciting!

Liz, in the last 20 something years there has been nothing to be proud of? Nothing? Sorry, but it is YOUR words that are meaningless. And ridiculous.

Ok. You’re all correct. All of the Dems are bad. I’m asking Obama for my money back and I’m voting for Nader again. And just when the Democrats might have gotten one of their votes back.
The best thing about all of this negative back and forth is that it is destructive of the Democratic party. You might think that you would want to stay positive, because you will just end up with Bush’s long lost uncle John “let’s have another war” McCain.

With spouses like Michelle Obama and Bill Clinton, Barack and Hillary may as well make their concession speeches now.
I’ve thought for a while that Michelle Obama was going to be too abrasive for many people’s taste. While we should judge the actual candidate most closely, you can’t deny that their spouse can help or hurt the cause.
As for Bill Clinton, I’ve thought for ages that he’s deliberately making all these supposed “blunders” to sink his wife’s campaign. His ego would take a beating if she got his old job. Plus, the idea of him unleashed in the White House, but with few responsibilities, is not something I’d care to see. His song could be “Who let the dogs in?”

Good for Cindy McCain.. No doubt, she will, appropriately, continue to stay in the political background; behaving like a lady, as well as a true American who inherently respects and honors this unique and great country. Cindy is looking more like a First Lady..

It is almost funny that you people are fighting about these silly words and slips of the tongue. Seriously people, there are bigger fish to fry.
Rather than focusing on Michelle Obama’s words, I prefer to look at those who attack her for them. Honestly, I feel worse for those who blindly follow their leaders and are “always proud” of their country. Lacking pride in things your country does is not un-American…it is UNIQUELY American. It is our duty as Americans to question our govenment and hold them accountable…something that has been sorely missing in recent years.

So what am I to do in November??????
Posted by: Not Me | February 20, 2008, 1:03 am 1:03 am
Far too much has been made of Michelle Obama’s comments. I love this country and I served it from 4/1985 to 4/2005 but I’m not proud of everything in our history. I’m not proud that we obliterated the Native Americans, enslaved other human beings, placed Japanese Americans in internment camps and continue to pay equally qualified women less than we pay men for the same job. To me America is at its best when it practices the principles it was built on…namely “liberty and justice for all”. This election is historic no matter whom you support and it is something Americans can be proud of. This year we can choose between two card carrying members of the AARP or the young guy, or choose a woman, a Black guy or a Vet…we have historic choices and historic voter participation. I’m more proud today than I was approaching the 2004 election.

This was a prepared speech. A speech she has given before. She is a law graduate hence her timing and delivery. She and her husband are fully aware of the power of language and choice of words.
They were trying to intimidate people and it blew up in their faces . If you on’t vote for Barack you don’t want a country you can be proud of.
Michelle I am in law school, I got in the old fashioned way – my grades. I am paying for this myself through my own sweat. Shame on you for wanting and taking the soft option. Did you care about who you denied? Shame on you. I think you and your husband are two faced.

I guess what I’m not understanding is why Michelle Obama can get a free ride over her “misinterpreted” quote, yet Bill Clinton’s statements prior to the South Carolina primary were also misinterpreted and the Obama camp has labeled him a racist.
I think its pretty pathetic that the media is choosing the Democratic nominee and not the people. Or should I say….its pathetic that the American people are too ignorant to see how biased the media is.

Of course Ms. McCain has always been proud to be an American… she has never had family or friends killed in a pointless war, she has never waited 8 hrs on an ER, she’s always lived in big mansions and has never wondered how she’ll make it to the end of the month. I’ll be proud of being an American if I were her too!
I’m glad she’ll never get to be our fist lady.

Just in case no one remembers, it is written into our founding documents that we, as citizens, should take care of and protect our government.
I’ve lived in another country – for a long time – and had to answer for all of the negatives of many years of scandalous US policies – I’ve always defended the US – with the thought that the people here have always come together to prevent really terrible abuses from happening – and I feel that coming on right now. After SC I felt that whatever came of Obamas candidacy, he’d made a change in the country – to the positive – that a very large number of people were again turning to civic responsibility. I’m over 60 and this is the first time I’ve felt something like this as well. I guess this is, for me, the first time that I’m really proud of the country that I’ve always loved.

The Obamas are proud about their committment to healthcare.
They are simply liars.
They have done nothing especially when it effects their interests and if they are such blatant liars on this subject then they are not to be trusted on others.
If they cared about healthcare then why does Michelle work at one of only a handful of hospitals in the whole country that doesn’t offer a discount to the uninsured ? Why as the Senator of Illinois has Obama never addressed this? A hospital that charges hugely inflated margins on care and medicene.
Why has he never questioned that this goes on at a “not for profit hospital” that made 100 million profit last year. A hospital that is a serious contributor and fundraiser for his campaigns. A hospital that tripled Michelles wage to nearly 300k when he was sworn into the Senate. A hospital whose management at her request found her couple of board positions (externally) when she asked and she picked up another 50k plus a year.
This is well known at the university of Chicagos hospital where the Obamas didn’t pick up the nurses votes. Dont just believe me read the Sun and the Tribune and Crains.
No Obama votes from me.

Tasteless…
Michelle and Barack should strive towards excellence and stop throwing nasty comments here and there. Like Thierry Freeman rightly pointed out, first it was the Deval stuff and now it’s an issue on patriotism. In my view, Michelle/Barack should simply apologize and explain this as a mis-statement due to the pressure of the day and stop trying to be defensive at all times. Just yesterday, I was very close to being an Obamite…. but might reconsider if comments like these keep coming out of the Obama camp… Please be patriotic and this is vital…

This buisness about Michelle Obama mispeaking and Obama’s non-plagerism is just more of the typical political rhetoric that clouds the real issues of this country instead of dealing with reality. This is exactly why Obama is so appealing. He’s a breath of fresh air in politics and he’s going to take it to the house. The Whitehouse that is!

I always wondered why it wasn’t compulsory to vote if an elected leader was supposed to represent all the people.
Now I understand. I thought I had three choices:
A man whose military outlook scares the crap out of me.
A woman whose lack of conscience worries me silly.
A man whose self agrandizing beliefs will send me broke.
SBut then there is option 4:
A vote I don’t have to cast.
It’s a disaster no matter who it is so I might as well let someone else choose and pretend it wasn’t my fault.

If you were born in 1961 and by the age of 7, Martin, Malcolm, Bobby, and Joe had died, and by the age of 30 your country had seen Ron Brown and Mickey Leland die in plane crashes, and then go to war with Vietnam and wake to Vietnam living in your neighborhood, then go to war in the Middle East, and the villan still lives in Pakastan’s mountains and many boys dead from war and not returning to be a “surviving POW” like McCain, then perhaps you would understand Michelle’s comments.
After all justice isn’t blind and neither should American Patritorage be… we should love America enough to take off the blind folds and help her have a better vision.

Geeeze can’t you people read? Nobody said you have to be proud of everything about America, but let me repeat this slowly for you morons….IN A PREPARED SPEECH Michelle gave TWICE….she said for the FIRST TIME she was proud of her country. Yes, in the first speech she even left off the word “really.” Now don’t insult our intelligence and tell us she didn’t know what she was saying. No slip of the tongue excuse for this Harvard-Princeton grad.
I’m just glad she said this early so conservatives can run with it. Nothing like a person’s own words used to destroy their chances. Let’s roll!

On 60 Minutes in her first real interview, Michelle was asked if she was worried about the safety of her husband should be become president. Michelle said something like “As a black man, my husband could get killed going to the gas station.”
As a black man? What does that mean? I don’t know a lot of black men getting randomly shot at gas stations, Michelle, unless of course you’re talking about black men killing other black men. Does Michelle realize that most blacks are killed by other blacks? Somehow I doubt she would admit this, because you see, Michelle likes to divide us (and shame us) using RACE. And now she wants to make us ashamed of our country. Not going to work.
Michelle, you’re not fit to be First Lady, don’t quit your day job.

It seems as if a lot of you are biased people. ALL of us LOVE this country! But being proud of its policies is another thing. America the beautiful has killed off the greatest leaders of our time, made racial and hate wars against the poor.. like you Eric and Jill. Michelle Obama and her spouse is living proof of the American dream, but they worked for it. Give that, at least, the respect it deserves. It sounds like a lot of you are proud of how we look like war-mongers to the rest of the world, all the soldiers who dies in Iraq, Vietnam… that people are losing their homes, and the Katrina incident? Well, ya’ll need to get a little hope. Have a good day…

Look, this is real simple. Michelle can be ashamed of her country and it’s policies and whatever hell else she wants to be ashamed of about America.
But don’t expect Americans to vote you & your husband in office. If you aren’t proud of America, then you shouldn’t be President & First lady, it’s as simple as that. Out of the millions of people who ARE proud, why in the world would we pick people that are on the fence, so to speak. We don’t have to resort to that. And we never will. McCain, you’re looking better all the time, and so is your wife.

Maybe Michelle needs to spend some time in Africa, and see what her future might have been if she hadn’t been born over here. How does Darfur look to you Mrs. Obama? Rwanda? and all the other murderous hellholes that we have to send millions to just to keep a handful of people alive. Are you proud of the land of your ancestors? You got real thriving democracies over there, don’t you? Why not take a visit and stay there. We’ll elect someone to represent us who actually likes the country they’re representing.

I’m utterly amazed at the intense focus this remark has received! I can’t believe some of the uneducated comments written here are based more on emotion rather than on any real knowledge of the issues, actually hearing the entire speech or understanding we all are imperfect people. Can any of you honestly say that you have NEVER made a comment that someone else completely misunderstood or misinterpreted? Who are any of you to sit in judgment of a person’s ENTIRE character based on your perception of what she said? Some of you are so fueled by your jealousy because of your ineptness to step out and make a difference. This petty focus is why this country is going to hell in a hay basket, because people like you can’t discern what is truly important. Folks, our country has a lot to be proud of, but even an ignorant, uninformed person could see we have a lot that has got to change. Starting with our children. Are your grandparents as proud today as they were when they were kids? To say that we should be proud of America at all times is to deny the very issues that are eroding this once great super power. America has too much potential for us to be satisfied with what we have today. Put your money where your mouth is!

Dearest Jill (and other hate-mongers)… this country was also built on the backs of slaves who never got a dime nor any respect for all the work, sweat, blood, and tears that they gave to this country – but that has been forgiven. It is ok for you to be for Mccain, for others Hillary, and others who want solutions, answers and change from Obama. This is what makes America great! We all have a voice – an EQUAL voice. Hate, however, and racism is another thing… I agree that Michelle was speaking from the disillusionment with the past, but believe me, SHE loves the USA. If she didn’t, what woman in her right mind would allow her family to be ridiculed and placed in danger (from rascist fascists and multi-mega rich oil people). they have courage, and they are follwing the democratic process of taking a stand. Now if you do not choose to stand with them, that is your choice. When will WE as a COUNTRY stop judging people for the color of their skin and start looking at the content of their character. None of us know the pain this woman carries. You all have made me decide to vote OBAMA!

Does anyone here really believe because she left an “er” off one of her words in a 45 minute speech, that she has not been proud of the United States?
This was a 45 minute speech done with only two 3×5 cards and some people here are parsing a sentence.
Politics at this level are tough I realize, but please. I watched this speech on c-span live in Sunday. It was a good speech – uplifting while also talking about the challenges the country has ahead of it. Michelle needs to clarify this in her next speech.

It is a shame how C. McCain has taken Michelle Obama’s comment out of context. It shows how petty some politicians can be. There are still a number of people who want the institional racism to live on. Then there are the positive hopefuls who want change in the right direction like Obama and his wife. Let’s talk about the real issues America. Don’t forget their are a number of people around the world who are waiting for us to destroy ourselves from within.

For those of you who can read, i believe that Michelle’s comment said ‘For the first time in my ADULT life’. Not for the first time in my entire life. In the last 20 years your country has been riddled with various scandals in the white House, war mongering and general socio-economic decline. Bill Clinton was charismatic but in many ways and embrassment, as for George W., he justs serves to entertain the rest of us with his constant blunders whilst alienating your country further. The Dollar has fallen so low that it is a joy to come and shop in the US. I think you guys should get a grip and stop looking for little insignificant things to hang your prejudice upon. Obama may well be your next president so get with the program. Yes YOU CAN!!!

I FELT AN EMPATHY I SELDOM HAVE FELT WITH ANYONE CONNECTED WITH POLITICS. THESE NEGATIVE HEADLINES I’VE SEEN IN PAPERS AND BLOGS ARE TOTALLY UNFAIR, TAKING THAT ONE LINE OUT OF CONTEXT. SHE WAS POINTING FORWARD WITH HOPE, NOT DENIGRATING THE PAST. I KNEW EXACTLY WHAT SHE MEANT BY THE LINE. JUST COUNT THE NUMBER OF ‘GATES’ WE AMERICANS HAVE HAD TO LIVE WITH. I URGE ALL TO SIMPLY VIEW/READ THE SPEECH IN ITS ENTIRETY AND THEN COME TO YOUR OWN CONCLUSION. I KNOW THAT IS AN INCREDIBLY DEMAND ON ANYONE’S TIME. BUT I URGE ALL AGAIN, FOR THE SAKE OF FAIRNESS.

Sorry, I cannot say I have been proud of politics in this country over the past 8 years (and many times my pride came and went). Earlier someone made the comment that we should be proud of our country all the time no matter what. That is BS. If you have children, are you proud of them when they act up in school? Are you always proud of yourself? NO. I love my country, but there are many times I can do nothing but shake my head at the actions of the politicians ‘leading’ us.
Therefore, Michelle’s comments are right on. I like McCain and I like Obama. A matchup between them will be a win win in my book.
All these people stating that they will be voting republican for the first time? I ask why? What is Obama doing that is angering you? Every solution he has come up with for political problems provides carrots and sticks and shows that a great deal of thinking was involved in developing the idea. Sure makes me like him more and more for his message and his substance.

Even if we take Mrs. Obama’s remark in the most literal way, she is simply being honest about her personal feelings, that she has not been able to feel proud about America,… that is until now. We should not be harsh or judgmental because she has admitted that her feelings of pride has been stopped up. Even if we want to start to pretend like we can understand the inner landscape of her mind we should simply try to be understanding about her personal admission (and also consider that this remark might even have been offhand, and can not yield any detailed psychological profile of her anyway) I really believe little can be garnered from this remark concerning political decisions. Much of being made out of little (or nothing). There is nothing in this remark that relates to fitness to govern (not to mention that she isn’t running for elected office either). And then to extrapolate psychological and political conjectures on to her husband seems to be getting really out of bounds.

I listened last night as various news commentators chastised Michelle Obama for her remarks, taken out of context, on how proud she was of her country at this moment in her life. Let me be clear, before Obama, there has never been a credible Black candidate running for the office of President. Before Obama, there has never been a Black man that could galvanize this country into supporting him for the office of President. Before Obama, Blacks had little to be proud of when it came to ‘Politics’ in America.
I served for twenty years with honor in the United States Navy on both submarines and surface combatants – few can say that. I wore my uniform with pride, dignity, and a conviction that only a person willing to die for his country could identify with and understand. I have never been more proud of my country than I am now. My country has finally said with a strong voice at the voting polls that ‘yes’ a Black man can be president of these United States.
That is what Michelle was trying to say people – nothing more!

Michelle Obama would be the most disrespected first lady in history. The fact that Obama supporters don’t see anything wrong with a person in this position being disrespectful to the history of our country plays into the notion that they are part of a cult. All the signs are there. Remember, if you can’t question the leader it is a cult.

I have had the priviledge to work with many African Americans during 35 yrs of public service. Michelle’s sentiment unfortunately happens to be shared by many in the African American community.
When you live your life expecting your government to solve your ills and believing liberal commentary about how “bad things always are” its difficult to be proud of the system of government that has given all of us so much and is the best country on earth.
I honestly believed her when she said it was the first time she was proud of our country. Let her speak more and tell us how she menat it, instead of her husband out to defend her. BHO has displayed the same attitude during his campaign in subtle ways. No flag on his lapel just one small but revealing example. The flag is a symbol of the heart and soul of the US. Just as burning it shows disrepect, wearing it is a sign of inner commitment to the ideals set forth in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. I like the Obama’s but I doubt their heart felt attitudes toward our country’s past accomplishments.

How could the wife of a possible President say this the first time that she is proud of her country. I just do not like the sound of that at all.
I am always proud of my Country sometimes I do not understand what goes on with it but ALWAYS PROUD OF IT.
I think she had better clean-up that statement and say what she meant to say.
To me when I look at her face she looks so very angry but that is the way I look at it I could be wrong.

Regardless if I’m proud of Bush being the president which I’m not has nothing to do with the PRIDE I feel and have always felt being an American. If Obama would some how become President I’m sure I wouldn’t be proud of him either since I do not care for his American Idol nonsense now. I am a Democrat and unless Hillary is the candidate I will not waste my vote on Obama! I will have to go with McCain.

Seeing Cindy McCain comments, made this WI undecided do some research and choose Obama. Anyone who has affairs and dumps his wife & children for an “heiress” is not fit for leadership. And it takes 2 to tango, her moral compass is sickening as well. Cindy was born into extreme wealth, of course she has no understanding of Mrs. Obama’s words.

I find it hard to believe that ALL of you bashing Michelle for what she said, have been 100% proud in this country your whole life. With Bush’s approval rating so low, I would think most people would find it hard to be proud of what this country has turned into.
Besides that,
You are contorting her words to mean something completly different. Get over yourselves and actually listen. And don’t even attempt to tell me that after all of the crap that has gone on with this last presidency, that you are completly proud of this country. :|
Because we all know that would be a big, fat, lie.

WHAT! This is amazing. Not only are Michelle’s comments taken out of context, so is her record. She did not depend on affirmative action to get into school. Princeton and Harvard are no joke and would be offended at your comment. Obama has momentum and uneducated comments only bring more people on to his side from every demographic.

My ancestors was not asked if they wanted to come to America. If they would have been asked you best believe they wouldn’t have come. Just read about the 2 million who jumped to their deaths on the voyage here. AND I’M NOT LEAVING FOR THE SIMPLE FACT MY ANCESTORS BULIT THIS COUNTRY AND DID NOT GET PAID ONE THIN DIME. You can hear the desperation of the Clintonites and the few McCain supporters. Look, the voters in Wisconsin did not consider this or the other negatives floating about Obama to be an issue. Neither will most voters anywhere. Give it up and move on to the next topic. You’ll only become bitter and self-hating.

Two points need to be remembered:
1) To be proud of one’s country is different from being proud of any administration (whether current or present)To feel no pride for one’s country reeks of the need to become a citizen of another country for which one can feel some pride.
2) If this was an error in communication, she should apologize and clarify….not her husband, not people here

The United States is a powerful country, that doesn’t always act in the best interests of black people or poor people or women.
The electorate has been largely apathetic; the politicians cynical and calculating.
The country has been ruled by the special interests of large corporations.
The global environment is going down the toilet.
I have to say, Michelle Obama’s words make sense to me.

What some of the people from above need to realize, is that Michelle Obama was talking really about the people turn-out in the rally. She wasn’t talking about being “sarcastically proud” of her country.
If some certain person says something like THAT, one should know all the details about it and investigate. After knowing all the details, then they can give whatever opinion about it they want.
I admit too, that I thought of her saying whatever she did meant something else. So I am guilty as well.
Now I know what the deal really was.

We do great things everyday to help people all over the world. She has been an adult for 25yrs and nothing has ever made her proud to be an American? I can not forgive that comment. She needs to make a public apology and explain what she meant, if she didn’t mean what she said.

Cindy has had a fortunate life. Is she proud of a country where billions of dollars are spent on a war that continues to take the lives of our soldiers while senior citizens have to die in the summer time because they won’t have enough money to pay their utility bill if they turn on a fan or air conditioning; or decide whether to eat or buy their medications? where racism still lives? where people were sold into slavery? where poverty continues to live and much much more?

Symbols of our country matter.

Proud to be in the country whose leader should be impeached for lying to the people about an issue such as nucelar armaments and then to ask the people to send their son or daughter into live combat to further their greed(oh…strategic interest) to another country’s soveign mineral rights? Who do people who support such nuts think they are? Pride in a country comes through consistent representations of truth, liberty, and equal rights!!!

Unfortunately Rick, the President having an extra marital affair while in office is deeply disturbing. I wouldn’t pick him as husband material but I would still pick him for president. I know the country was much more respected when he was in office except for the all the Republicans who wasted our tax paying dollars on investigation after investigation. The ecomony was doimg well with a nice surplus that Bush gave to Haliburton & friends.
And no, Michelle didn’t say anything about walking in my shoes. I said it before everyone else did.

Truly amazing! Whenever the obamas make a negative statement in any category, there is an immediate outcry of defense for them and of course excuses. However, if Hillary even breaths incorrectly, the obama supporters jump upon this and bash her with really unkind words.
The media plays everything that obama says as “golden” and gives him free time on the air, while suppressing Clinton at every turn.
This is showing bias by the media and is really unacceptable. And unfortunately the media, knowing exactly what they are doing, makes no effort to be subtle. Yet, I recognize the media’s effort to stop Hillary Clinton from being elected and I understand that is politics in the USA, this is how presidents are elected here.
On the other hand, the obama supporters on these threads are really hateful towards Clinton. You don’t have to vote for her or like her – can’t you just be decent?

I don’t understand the American people on why they want Obama in the White House. He didn’t swear in as Senator on the Holy Bible, he turns his back when the Pledge of Allegiance is said. Didn’t the Iraqi’s state they would get the US, but the next time it would be from within. What better position than from the Presidency. I don’t think he can bring change. If you want change, then change your congressman. If it came down to just Hillary and Obama,I would vote for Hillary just for the reasons above.

There will be attacks against Obama. We know. But Obama is ready. He was born ready. It is nothing new for him to be “attacked” by words, etc. I’m just glad that people are tired of hearing attack ads, mudslinging, and name calling. We just want a vibrant president who doesn’t appear as if he can’t make it through 4 years in office, because he’s looking fatigued even now. Obama’s fresh. He does have experience. His brain isn’t any slower than anyone else’s up on those stages. He’s ready from day one.

Nice, Mccain & Hillary voted for the war and Obama didn’t. I believe it was because Obama didn’t have a vote not yet being in the Senate. I believe it was Obama that said in ’04 when rallying for Kerry that he didn’t know how he would have voted. Nice, to change your words whenever it works best for you. Or did he “misremembered”?
I like the way Michelle is being defended as her words being misconstrued. I believe it was the Obama camp that tried to label President Clinton as a racist for saying it was a fairy tale. He never said it was a fairy tale for Obama to become President he said his story on the war was a fairy tale that’s why Obama took his speech of of his website.
So, you need to watch what you are crying about. Turnabout is fair play.

just because Michele has not been proud of her country does not mean she doesn’t love her country. I don’t understand what one has to do w/ the other. If you had a child that was running amok, making bad decisions and hurting people you would not be proud of that child, but you would still love him just the same. I am w/ Michele 100%…you cannot question a person’s patriotism just because they disagree w/ the actions of the president; or don’t want to wear a pin on their lapel. btw, I wear a peace sign on my lapel, and it doesn’t not lessen my degree of patriotism.

Michelle Obama should be ashamed of herself for making such a statement. Not only does it tell me a lot about her patriotism, it tells me a lot about how the Obamas see themselves. As an American you should always be proud of your country. You may not be proud of a president or the political climate but you should always be proud of your country. In some countries around the world this kind of talk would be banned. Maybe Michelle should get on her knees and thank God this awful country lets her say such things…

IF she is a true American and she has some political savvy, she should know better than to say something that stupid. It’s not the first time. There’s been some sarcastic talk suggesting that this counrty, under the Bush administration, doesn’t have too much to be proud of. WE THE PEOPLE are the country…not the administration. If you think the war was illegal…if you were never convinced that Iraq posed a threat to the US…if you thought the US was INVADING a soveriegn nation without good cause…what did you do about it? Did you write your congressmen and senators? Did you speak up when “patriots” were calling for war in Iraq around the water cooler at work? DID YOU STAND UP TO BE COUNTED?
I’m proud of my country (WE THE PEOPLE who are willing to give our money to help natural disaster victims in other parts of the world). I’m not proud of the Bush administration who either totally lied to us about WMD’s or was so wrong, it borders purposeful, criminal incompetence.
There’s a middle ground between those who would never say anything negative about our counrty because they’re soooo patriotic and those who would blast our country for Iraq because they’re soooo patriotic. Let’s find that middle ground and choose a candidate that will make decisions based on the total truth of the matter, sing our praises we deserve it, but also tell let us know when we need to do better.
WE THE PEOPLE!

Michelle Obama IS snobby sounding and appears to have a large chip on her shoulder. Of course she is proud now, her husband has hypnotized half the nation. I guess she wasn’t proud she was able to accomplish all the other great things in her life. Instead of letting people know that they too could have accomplished those things, she makes it seem as though african american people can’t be truly proud of our country unless a black man is president. I see her views as very passive aggressively racist. I truly believe that the first african american president should not have that chip on his shoulder. I think they both have it and I don’t think it’s healthy.

The kind of statement that was made by Mrs. McCain shows the importance of electing a President who stills has the common touch. Mrs. McCain went on to later that she has lived a priviledged life and that is exactly why Mr. McCain should not be President we have had enough leaders who have never had to worry about whether the decisions being made for them would effect their everyday living. We need a President who’s had to depend on his leaders making the hard choices that help to benefit him. That’s the problem with the Clinton’s as well, for them this is all business as usual. For Senator Obama this is about changing the conditions of everyday working Americans. To do that you need to have been an everyday working American. Senator Obama is the only candidate who can provide that kind of leadership.

Being a proud American can mean many different things to many people; being a 50 year old mother of high school athletes, every time I hear the Pledge of Allegiance or Star Bangled Banner before one of my childrens’ contests, I feel not only proud but also grateful to be an American. How can one listen to our national anthem and feel nothing?

Wow! Cindy McCain has spoken!! It is a know fact that certain people in this country do not get the same preferential treatment as others, because of the way they look. The reasons could be their skin color, facial features, a woman’s weight, etc.., and some will be treated differently. So therefore, their American experience will be different. I guess the Republicans are still compassionate. That’s what we started hearing 8 years ago. It’s as if God said, OK, prove it!! Katrina!!! Go down there to the Gulf Coast, and let us see if they’re going to back up their words. We better pray that someone in this race will.

i don’t think anyone here can say that they have always been proud of their country. i’m proud to be a american but i have not been happy with all the changes that have been going. i am 40, single black mother of three, currently two. i make a little under 40 a year. does the system work for me? NO. i don’t qualify for nothing, and by time they take taxes and health benefits out of my check, i’m robbing peter to pay paul. So maybe this is the first time that she can see the light and be apart of it. why knock her for that. Cindy has not said nothing all this time why now. From the whole time Obama has been in the running, nothing positive has been said from the media that has stood out. When will he get his props??? obviously he is doing something right if he is getting votes from the people. you all need to get off her back for her what she said. How many times have you all said something and it was twisted. Not to be races, but i bet all of you making these comments are white. nothing else to say. GO OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m a 60 something lady who lived through the awful sites and sounds of the civil rights struggle, the deaths of MLK and Bobby Kennedy. I also lived through the 8 years of the Clinton’s and stuck by Clinton when the Lewinsky transcript was placed on the internet by Ken Starr. No statement as trivial as what Michelle O. said comes close to the pain that Bill Clinton placed on his country, his party and the Oval Office.

Some of you people will find any reason to spew hate over the internet. Michelle Obama is a very intelligent, faithful woman. I did not hear her say, that she is not proud of her country. Her comments simply reflect the feelings of a lot of proud Americans remembering a time when a woman or man of color would never have had a chance at this all powerful position. It’s time that you get used to the reality that this country is changing for the better, not that it wasn’t already great.

You can be proud of your country for some things, love it for other things and feel REALLY proud of it when things change for the better. There have been many wonderful actions (and sentiments) during this election that have made me really proud of this country and there are times my pride grows larger and times it grows smaller. Bush’s actions have made me less proud of this country.
Let’s celebrate the good. I’m sure both Obamas are proud and patriotic citizens and I’m sure, as they head around the country on the campaign trail, they are seeing a lot to make them more proud.
It makes me less proud of this country to hear people say that Michelle Obama is where she is because of affirmative action. She is a strong, articulate, and admirable woman. Cindy McCain the cheerleader should continue to keep her mouth shut if she can only open it to slander other people by insinuating they are unpatriotic. Do we want more Bush-style Macarthyism in the White House?

I just can’t imagine the American people can accept a first lady who was not proud of her country. This just tells us how little we know about the Obamas. The media so far haven’t done their job of scrutinizing the Obamas (they are so intrigued by things Bill Clinton is or isn’t saying or doing). I don’t know what the Washington media and pundits are thinking. U.S. presidency is not “affirmative action.” We don’t owe it to the Obamas.

What you Republican GOP members do not understand is this. Main stream America does not want any of you to lead them anymore. You guys are so out of touch with the average American citizen you have no idea what they are feeling. Go had bash Obama and his wife, you will go down just like Hillary is going down. You will get your heads handed to you in the general election. The American people are intelligent and they do not want anything to do with anyone from your party. Get a clue GOP; this is what happens when you do care about the regular people out there or when try to kill someone when they make a mistake.
When you do not have a job, or loosing your house, or your savings are being depleted and your pension has been stolen. National Security does not mean a damn thing to that person. You guys have your head so far up butt you can’t see the light of day. Try learning history you can learn from it. This is your lesson from this election take notes. Go ahead and vote for McCain and your 100 year War in Iraq, your to stupid to even capture Osama Bin Laden after spending 8 billion a month. God Bless America and the people of America.

McCain said: “I have never lived a day, in good times or bad, that I haven’t been proud of the priviledge, of being an American.” Well, fine Mr. McCain…
You also said that you were serving in the military while MLK was demonstrating for equality for all people……
The fact of the matter is plain…..No one who is not of color can relate to the pain suffered by those of color from a country that used them in Vietnam and treated them like second class citizens upon return…….
This type of foolishness makes no sense……
Why should anyone be proud of a nation that allowed dogs to attack protesters?

Nobody is proud of America after Bush – one more example of how much more in touch the Obama campaign is than any stupid Republican.

She will be a great first lady and barack will be a fantastic president. These words that she said does not mean that she was bashing the past of our country. She just knows that Barack and change the way our country runs and she feels confident about that which makes her a strong person. I am all for the obamas. freedom of speech.

Ummm lets see Princeton and Harvard grad couldnt just say I have to tell you that its the first time in my adult lifetime that I’m proud to see all of America working for change.I didnt need to go to two colleges to think of that, nor do I need a college education to know what she ment.I have always been proud of Americas steps toward equality for all be they large or small. And even when there were monents that I was ashamed of things done in the name of this country I have always had the knowledge that Americans would fix those moments and make them right.I also noticed that the words I am sorry for my poor choice of words was missing from Michelles reply.

What’s the big deal about not being proud to be an American? Bush has the whole world hating us, we’re putting our noses where they don’t belong and imposing our governmental system on countries that don’t want it and/or aren’t meant to run that way, we could care less who we let into the country, etc.
I’m not proud and haven’t been for a long while. President Obama could very well change that, though…I have a very good feeling. Hope is just around the corner, folks!

Just add this to the growing list of things she’s already said that are disturbing. Not sure when this is all going to end for them, but it will. If they do get the nom, going to have to write Hillary Clinton in for my vote. Would be interesting if after the Republican attacks get done with Obama, that Hillary gets written in enough to win the election!

In reality, Michelle Obama knew exactly what she was saying and she meant every word of it. She is as vacuous as her husband. If the only time she can be proud of America is when hubby is in the limelight, this nation will be ill-served by the Obamas at any level of authority.
Trying to qualify her statement is ridiculous – and should be called for what it is… a sound bite born of ignorance, hubris, and arrogance.
If Obama is nominated I’m going to do something I wouldn’t have even considered 25+ years ago; I’m switching parties and voting for John McCain. John doesn’t have trouble being an American and proud of it when times are only good for him. He’s proud to be an American period. As much as I hate to see a Republican back in office, it’s a damned site better than the possible alternative.

Why do people think we should be proud of our country right or wrong?
I am proud of our country when we do good things. I always love our country, but pride is different. Pride comes from accomplishment and is earned.
What Michelle was trying to say is that this is a proud moment for our country. She was saying something positive. We are entering an era where politics are positive, not ugly.
Come on, people. Let’s not turn it ugly. Relax. We love our country because we are free to express ourselves and not be crucified because of it. She was really saying something very hopeful.

Our nations history is rich and rife with moments to be proud and moments to be admonishing it’s leaders. I have never NOT been proud of my country. I cannot imagine a politician or their spouse making a public statement like that and the people being forgiving. Her weak explaination is silly. I am proud of the senator for doing as well as he has. I will not vote for him, if that time comes, for my own reasons.
Keep the wife in the backgound if you want to do well, Barack!

I have no problem with Michelle Obama’s comment and I understood it. Many Americans have become frustrated with the state of affairs in recent years, yet they still embrace their heritage as Americans. Many Americans have not been proud of the way things have turned out in this country with the economy, our role in an unjustified war, and myriad other areas, but these campaigns — not just Obama’s — give people a sense of hope, that given concern over the state of affairs and the electorate coming out in droves, this nation can exercise its resilience by overcoming seemingly insurmountable problems instead of wallowing in despair like other nations have done.

“clinton is grasping at straws. i know what she meant, and so does clinton and all these others trying to make this sound like something else.” Did you actually read what Clinton said in response to this (in the article?)? It sounded like she sided with Obama? Read again – and this wasn’t something from the Clinton camp – this was something from the Repubs and you will see much more, if you survive past the debates tomorrow.

Shame on you, Obama, to say that ‘For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m proud of my country’. But – I guess these are “Just Words”. Empty words. Obama is nothing but a con. His words turn out to be nothing but a phony, stealing words and speeches from others. Maybe he needs to consult Deval Patrick again. Patrick is a disaster as a Mass governor. The people in Mass saw this coming, they heard all the phony speeches before and they just don’t buy them. They voted for Hillary.
There is nothing real in the Obamas, they just want the power, to turn this country upside down, which is the CHANGE, that they want. We don’t want leader who is not proud of being American all the time. GO HILLARY – THE ALLTIME PROUD AMERICAN.

“What we have learned over this year is that hope is making a comeback. It is making a comeback. And let me tell you something — for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment. I’ve seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues, and it’s made me proud.”
There’s nothing there. People love Michelle Obama, and attacking her is going to go over even worse than attacking Barack Obama. The right has to play to nationalism because it is, as they say, the last refuge of scoundrels.

Anyone who is still proud of the United States after what we’ve done in Iraq is a sick human being with no sense of decency or morality. The best among us are deeply ashamed of what has been done in our name, the worst among us are strutting around, make loud fools of themselves while the rest of us try to minimize the damage they’ve done. Michelle Obama speaks for me.
Posted by: Robert | February 20, 2008, 5:40 pm 5:40 pm
Michelle said it was the first time in her adult life that she was REALLY proud. She didn’t say she wasn’t proud of our country. She was emphasizing just how proud she was now due to her own husband’s plans for change in America. She said she was REALLY proud–she was saying just how much prouder she was now. Not that she wasn’t proud before. Fox News, I heard on Air America, (and they played the clip), actually cut out the word “really” from her quote. You can hear her say “r” then there is a blank, then the tape goes on.

There is a trend here and I hope everyone is following it: Ms. Obama’s nasty comments toward Clinton and now against our great country! How can they explain this one away and smooth it over? What about our soldiers who are serving overseas right now? Who does she think she is?! Why is it okay for her to say such things and the media helps smooth it over and when Bill Clinton, another spouse, says something – it gets so much press and discussion and helps sway voter pattern in the states with more African Americans? I am tired of this and now I’m voting for Clinton here in Texas; at least she’s withstood all of this extreme media bias where nothing gets smoothed over for her.

Bill O’Reilly, for example, just now said he wouldn’t want to organize a “lynching party” for Michelle, UNLESS there was proper evidence.

The world is watching just how petty and stupid this argument truly is….she’s unpatriotic, she needs to go back to Kenya, she is ungrateful, affirmative action this, affirmative action that….
You all are pathetic!
And the world is getting a real good feel of the type people we have in our country. I think they understand NOW why Bush was put back in office in 2004, look at the caliber of people we have voting!

What was the conversation prior to this remark from Michelle? Get a grip, people! You need to put things in perspective and get the whole story, not just some sound bite. The media and politicians (including Cindy) spin things at their whim with little regard to the truth or the whole story, just enough to use to their advantage or cause an uproar. I don’t know why Michelle should even have to explain herself, I guess some people aren’t bright enough to figure it out the first time.

Michelle Obama looks like somone who is very bitter. And she may have good reasons. She definitely meant what she said. She probably loves the country today because people are voting for her husband and believeing all the nonsense he is dishing out like “change” “word has meaning” etc. etc. Michelle Obama will immediately loose her pride in America as soon as Barrack Hussein looses in the election.

I am I still love Obama’s rhetoric, depite some of which was stolen from another politician. But I just can’t see Michele Obama be the first lady of this country. I’d be worried if she said things like that while representing my country to the rest of the world. It’d be such an embarrassment. Remember she is not an average black woman, she’s got an ivy league education, makes 6 figures a year, lives in a 1.6 million dollar mansion, now aspires to the first lady, but she was apparently not proud of her country in which she has been able to achieve all those things.

I read the entire text and am getting more of a larger picture of the Obama couple; this is not the first time they’ve said something offensive or done something offensive to me (taking lines from a speech that was already said by his friend, he has used drugs and there are some concerning things about his dealings with a felon and drug use that have not been addressed) I guess I don’t know anything about this guy really and my gut thinks that he really couldn’t do the job as President. At least Clinton’s skeletons are out – why else would she go back into the limelight like this – wouldn’t you think she would know that if she had more skeletons they would be discovered by the GOP again? She seems smarter to me anyway. I’m willing to give this woman a chance – i trust her more than this guy that I have a weird feeling about!
Posted by: William | February 20, 2008, 5:53 pm 5:53 pm
In a casual conversation between everyday people, most would have known exactly what she meant by her comment… and most still do, but because we treat politics like a football game, even a misphrased sentence becomes fodder for the opposing team. Truthfully, I’d be more proud of my country if we could collectively stick to the important issues instead of squabbling over baloney.

I like Michelle — she reminds me of ME. I have put my foot in my mouth any number of times, and all it amounts to is trying to get a point across and not parsing the words too well. Maybe she should take lessons from Bill..how many ways can you define “IS”? At least she has something concrete and meaningful to say which is more than we can say about the trophy wife with the less-than-pristine past. I too have been bitterly ashamed of my country for some time now…where to begin? Torture? Starting wars without even getting the consent of congress? Throwing out Habeas Corpus? Rigging the Supreme Court with wingnut activist judges? We need Obama so much. And Michelle, too.

What I sense here on this site is a bunch of losers who just cannot stand to see the day when a person of color will rise to become president. Please be advised, this is perhaps the reason the Republicans are fighting immigration as they are…….This country will one day truly be integrated at all levels.
It’s amazing how folks will fight to keep power…….There is only one African American governor in the US….
Are you fellows proud of that? There’s only one African American United States senator? Are you losers proud of that?
There’s never been an African American or woman president or vice president…..Is that something to be proud of this country? Never has there been an African American female supreme court justice? What is that to be proud of? Never has there been an African American attorney general, secretary of defense, FBI director, CIA director, Federal Reserve Chairman, Speaker of the House, and the list goes on and on and on and on……And you knuckle heads talking about being proud of America…..Proud for what? slavery and Jim Crow?
You people need to catch yourselves and back off Michele Obama with your envious and silly selves…..

When I was a young marine, the pride I felt for my country had been instilled by public school education (designed to make us good capitalists and never hear a socialist word), the Boy Scouts, and endless movies about the heroic American cowboys and cops. It was a pride based on nothing but images and other peoples’ opinions. It was knee-jerk. The amount of history I was taught would have filled a small bucket, but the amount that was ignored and not taught would have filled a football stadium. During the Vietnam War, I felt shame for my country. Since that time I have felt more shame and embarrassment than pride, because of the unjust wars that my country has brought to other people, always poor, usually brown or yellow. The abandoned Indians, the 6.5 million dead in Indochina, the 50,000 murdered Nicaraguans, the 250,000 murdered Salvadorans, the drowning blacks of New Orleans, the million-dead in Iraq–will someone tell me what there is in all this that makes one proud? Their “pride” is the football-brain pride of “Hooray for our side!” I will be proud of my country the day that it changes its national behavior, ends racism here, provides the necessities of life to all, and stops exporting weapons and war itself to people who can barely afford food. There will never be peace until peoples’ demands for justice are heard and satisfied.

Come on ABC, quote it the way she said it.
First she said she was “proud of my country.”
Then later that day she said “really proud” in a pathetic attempt at damage control.
Does this mean she hates America? No.
Does it tell us something about her, just like her husband’s refusal to put his hand over his heart during the national anthem and his refusal to wear an American flag pin tells us something about him.

I guess you feel rather safe in cyberspace behind your little terminal…..It’s easy for you to say such vile things, huh?
You must really live a sad life…..
May the Lord help you…

I understood exactly what Michelle Obama meant and she was not saying anything that betrayed her as unpatriotic. This current election is something very special and in her lifetime, she has never seen anything like it. I am an African American woman and I say to you all with great assurances that I have never been as proud of our country as I was when the Iowa caucuses voted for Obama. I can’t remember any other time in my entire life that I had that kind of pride in the United States. This is such a major bridge to us–you can’t know how big this is to many of us that a White state would vote for a Black candidate for President. That’s what Michelle’s was remarks were about.
The reaction to her, especially from non African Americans, shows there is still a lot we don’t understand about each other. Michelle’s remarks have absolutely nothing to do with disparaging or hating the United States. I hope those of you who have taken offense with it can learn to grow in your understanding through this process. There will not doubt be other issues of cultural communication that will arise. We’ve never had a black man as a potential presidential nominee until now. If Rush Limbaugh is such a patriot, then why isn’t he supporting his party’s potential nominee, one of the greatest modern war heroes in our country?

Is this the only thing people can attack Barack and his wife on? If so this is going to be a cake walk to the White House. Grow-up and get a life! And yes, I too have not been very proud of this country for a long time…better to say I’ve been embarassed to admit I was American with an idiot like Bush as a president. What a joke. Well we are sending this idiot back to Texas!!

This is PATHETIC. Michelle’s words are taken out of context and she even clarifies this (non-)story. Clearly she is a proud American and she seems very likable and genuine. Try to focus on politics instead.

I don’t understand how or why people are so frothy mouth rabid about the Obama’s. Basics: Barak doesn’t salute the flag or cover his heart at the appropriate times and Michelle has never been proud of our country for her whole life. Conclusion: How could anyone of sound mind accept these 2 representing the United States of America in any capacity.

Cindy McCain was stealing narcotics from seriously ill people; what a wonderful role model and First Lady she’ll make.
These Republicans have no shame in their hypocrisy; can you imagine the manufactured outrage the theocrats in the Republican Party would be spewing if Michelle Obama was a drug embezzling felon?

Michelle did not need to clarify anything. The truth is that some people are deprived of the capacities to go beyong the spoken words trying to capitalize on every spoken word and turn it into their advantage.
Obviously the level between a Harvard graduate and every body else is clear.
The graduate americans who follow Obama do UNDERSTAND his speeches and those of his wife.

Who Are We?
It sad and unfortunate that the objectivity that makes us human is fading away. We sit or stand before God and claim perfection, whereas we know that no one is Perfect; We stand and proclaim we are all equal whereas our actions show we do not mean it; we find it easy to talk about the mistakes of others whereas we have our own mistakes; we preach to others to let go but we do not, we call for fairness but we are not ourselves fair, we say a lot of things should be done in the interest of Our Great Nation, America whereas in reality these things are not in the interest of Our Entire Country but in the interest of a few, Why? Why? Why? Why? For how long can we continue to do these things?
Let It Be Known That The Way We See Others Is A Direct Reflection Of Who We Are. Let Act, Speak And Do Things As Civilized Race. We may contractditions because we are different and see things differently does that mean we must destroy those who are different, see or do things differently? Why can’t our contradictions be non-antagonistic and productive reflecting the diverse source of energy that propels America to Greatness. Why can’t we accept that every citizen has a right to express his or feelings based upon their individual experience. When we all do not share the same views on any one issue, should we then be embittered.
Examine your concience because you do this nation no good nor yourself.
We need to change and repect the rights of all to free speech and their opinion though we may not agree.
Thanks.

McCain is trying to make something out of semantics. Stupid. Typical Republican effort to win something. For the life of me I don’t understand the mentality of the party. They think they represent being strong. Whereas what they really represent is narrow mindedness.

Obama has divided the democratic party beyond repair and now his wife is going after the rest of the country. I believe that if he gets the nomination the divisions he has created will cause the Hillary supporters to vote republican just to vote against him in the final election. All this from the great uniter

I can’t believe what I’m hearing! It’s NO BIG DEAL when Michelle OBama mis-speaks – but don’t let Bill Clinton say anything about Jesse Jackson. That’s all you reported for a week and because you “made a big deal” about it, the blacks stopped supporting Hilliary and now support OBama. SHAME ON YOU. You should take your responsibility to report the truth unbiasly more seriously. SHAME ON YOU.

to the guy by the name of Bill, don’t be a hypocritical idiot, Michelle couldn’t get into those schools because of affirmative action, you want to say that every white person in this country is smart? Not all black people needs the help of affirmative action when they succeed. A student have to get good grades and reach the top to be kept in schools like Princeton and Harvard, they dont keep students there because of their color. You should not make yourself happy by thinking that Michelle is a dumb person or any black person that goes to famous schools because of their color because that is not the case, they still have to excel like anyone else. As I said before they are lots of dumb whites, not all white people are smart. I believe Michelle worked hard to accomplish the success and education she now have, the press misquoted her on what she said about being proud of her country now, I am sure her statement meant a broader sense, if people would open their minds and stop looking for the Obamas to slip.
Posted by: nancy | February 20, 2008, 6:54 pm 6:54 pm
For you Obama supporters who are supporting him because you think he’s going to bring the troops home – guess again. His campaign NOW says that it is just a “goal” and that he reserves the right to change his mind once he is in the White House. WOW! Blew my mind too!

To Joy: loving one’s country and being proud of it are two very different things.
I am a 39-year old white woman, and cannot honestly remember being proud of my country, except maybe once or twice–and those were more about being proud of groups of people within the country. Cynicism about politics…the sense that big money controls everything…two soulless wars fought for the wrong reasons…a complicated history of exploitation of groups of people to achieve the economic and territorial superstatus that we now “enjoy”–there’s not not much to be proud of. However, I still love the country, and keep working for change, because I believe that people CAN change, and can work for the common good–provided they are led to see it as the common good.
I respect Michelle’s honesty, whatever she intended to say. I also think people are forgetting the “really” part of the quote as well…I know Fox News omitted it from their reporting and their website. Deliberately, I’ll bet.

WOW…FIRST BARACK DIDN’T WANT TO WEAR THE U.S. FLAG ON HIS CHEST AND ANOTHER THING HE DIDN’T PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’S FLAG! WHAT’S NEXT? BURNING THE AMERICAN FLAG SHOWING IT’S OKAY TO BURN THE RED, WHITE AND BLUE BECAUSE IT DOESN’T MEAN ANYTHING? BECAUSE BARACK DID SAY “NOT WEARING THE FLAG DOESN’T MEAN ANYTHING PATRIOTIC OR UNPATRIOTIC…”

In what other country would Michele Obama had a chance to attend her fancy ivy league schools–ONLY in AMERICA and ONLY because of AFFIRMATIVE ACTION. They want to see Hillary’s tax returns? Fair enough! Let’s see your SAT’s and LSAT’s, Michele and Barack. I suspect you got in over more qualified candidates. You should be GRATEFUL for the opportunities this country has given you both. At least Hillary got into schools on her merit. BTW: How is Obama going to reform PUBLIC SCHOOLS when he’s never attended PUBLIC SCHOOLS???—no, he’s the “guy from the ‘hood” that went his whole life to ELITE, EXPENSIVE private schools paid for by somebody else. What a load of crap.

I’m sad that our country is so split. What happened to the respect for one another? Even on this board. Sure, you have to vote for someone, but I wish we could listen to each other, rather than bash one another before letting others get a chance to express how they feel.
We are so divided and so hurt. It makes since that Michelle is proud to see change in our nation. But more change needs to happen. If Obama can do that great! If McCain can, great!
But bashing isn’t going to solve much. It just distracts you from the true problem, our division.
So please. I will not be able to legally vote in the next election, but I hope that rather than form strong judgments or pick a party, all you voters will seriously listen to each candidate and decide as your own person, who will be a respectful leader who will listen to the people.
He may not do everything right, but if we would just unite, then maybe our country can make a comeback.

People will continue to act as though there is no war on terror and that “deplomacy is the best course of action” until there is nuclear, biological, or chemical weapon parked in their pretty little marked parking space at Starbucks. Until that point, the general public will continue to turn a blind eye to what our current president has done for US, he has “hit the bully before the bully hit us”, and thank God,(what ever God you may pray to).

Michelle dont have to explain anything to the media, they took that statement and turn it around, sometimes things happen in this country that makes one discouraged. I am sure Michelle meant her statement to be understood in a broader sense, not for those who wants to turn it into a national disgrace. As for Senator Cain’s wife, she can go to hell because if her husband gets into the white house, we will see an escalation in the war, higher taxes and the poor working class living on the street.

If the statement made by Michelle Obama were made by Bill Clinton, it would be printed on the headlines. It would be a non-stop comment on talk radio. As for me, I am PROUD to be an American.
NOTHING changes that. Not George Bush, not Bill Clinton, not Ronald Reagan, not any other President or official, elected or not.
America is my country, and I am PROUD to live here and be an American. Never, and I mean NEVER, have I ever not been PROUD to be an American.
I am PROUD of the men and women who serve this country in the military and other capacities around the world and at home.
I am PROUD of those who serve this country and especially PROUD of those who have given the supreme sacrifice.
I do not need a political campaign to be PROUD of America for the first time.
Maybe, must maybe, the Obama’s time would be better spent apologizing to Americans, especially American service men and women for a particularly offensive remark.
Instead, the Obama campaign is in damage control trying to explain and spin what they want us to believe that Michelle Obama meant.
Michelle, we know what you meant…exactly what you said.
I wonder what would have happened if Bill Clinton or Cindy McCain would have said the same thing?
Would they have gotten the same kid glove treatment being doled out to the Obama’s by the press, ABC in particular?
Not in this life…

I’m not there all the time & surely not enough, but there are plently of people who’s sleeves have been rolled up & they have been working. On more than one occasion, Mrs. Obama has said things that reflect an attitude that this has been the first time she has been proud of her country in her adult life. She attempts to explain away what she says but words speak for themselves and said repeatedly, even in different ways, shows the real ATTITUDES of the people saying them. Hopefully, the Obamas will face tougher scrutiny over the next few months and people can hear all of their responses and make up their own minds based on more information.

How many of you are proud that we fought a senseless war that resulted in over 58,000 pointlessly killed (I was there–1969/70 So I know what I’m talking about.)

If true, this is yet another example of corrupt Republican’s who have been running this country into the ground. If you are thinking about voting for McCain, you should check this out. Pretty much like the last presidential election, anyone checked the electronic voting machines lately, or who bought out who? You honestly think Mrs. Clinton is going to win when we all know what is going to happen if she really does. How many black riots have you been in because things didn’t go their way?? Do you realize what will happen to our economy due to rioting if Obama doesn’t win this? Black history will tell you that it will happen & devistate our economony if Clinton wins & it will run true to form roiting in our 25 largest cities in our country. Give it up you Clinton fans & go for the most economical vote, Obama has already been fixed to win to avoid our countries economic disaster, riots. I was actually thinking of voting for Obama. I served 23 years in the military to hear this woman say such a thing. I know she has freedom of speech, but she also has the freedon to keep her Anti-American mouth shut. My fellow veterans if this is what we worked for then vote Obama, if not then it sounds like McCain in 08.

Obama laid out a lengthy Pakistan policy last summer in a speech at the Woodrow Wilson Institute where, responding to National Intelligence Estimate reports that Al Qaeda had re-constituted its forces in Pakistan, Obama called for air strikes against Al Qaeda targets if the United States had clear-cut intelligence.
Obamas willingness to bomb Pakistan in order to fight terrorists makes Obama a hypocrite.
When we went to war in Iraq, it was thought that Sadaam had WMD’s. We know that Osama does not have WMD’s and yet Obama says he will unilaterally start bombing Pakistan if he finds Osama or other terrorists there.
Obama claims, and most people agree, he was against the vote to authorize the use of force against Sadaam in Iraq. Obama claims he was against the Iraq war from the git go, because there were no WMD’s, and so what if Sadaam was supporting terrorists and threatening the west. Terrorism and supporting terrorists was not a good enough reason to go to war in Iraq according to Obama.
But now, under the same circumstances of harboring and supporting terrorists, Obama says he will bomb the sovereign nation of Pakistan.
Obama the flip flopping little weasel. God help us and the world if he gets to the White House.
Bush was wrong about Iraq, and his execution of the war was stupidity. But Obama is Wronger Than Wrong. Obama says he will go to war in Pakistan for a lesser threat than was in Iraq.
Don’t get me wrong, if Osama is found in the mountains of Iraq, the US should, with the support of Pakistan, go after Osama. But, the US cannot do it alone.
The problem for Obama is he said this was not a good enough reason to start bombing Iraq.
I am not against Obama because he is Black. I am against him because he is Wronger than Bush, and Wronger Than Wrong.
He is wrong on how and when to fight terrorism, he is wrong to take money from sleazebags under indictment to help buy a house, he is wrong on his immigration plan, and he is wrong to steal Hillary Clintons plans for Health Care, Education, and the Economy.
I live and Texas and were starting to see that Obama is all Hype, and no Hope.

Americans should always be proud of this country. Is it perfect? Not at all. But it’s pretty dog-gone good.
What other nation in the world could survive the ineptness, hate, and greed of the past 16 years without suffering a coup d’etat or riots in the capital?
In other great powers, certain religions or skin colors are ghetto-ized or else protesters are attacked by the military, forced to confront tanks with nothing but skin and bones.
The comment is a mis-speak, but Obama must pay the price–if his wife is campaiging, she represents his campaign. (And I appreciate they haven’t denied the comment and Obama hasn’t had to order his spouse to back off) –When Bill was making tasteless, crass comments last month, Hillary denied them, said they weren’t representative, etc. But they are–for all candidates.
Every speaker makes gaffes. McCain’s comment about Iraq and 100 years is similar. Let it pass and watch to see if they repeat the same mistake later in the campaign–that should be the worrying sign.

Feeling un-Proud of America?

Cindy McCain should not criticize Michelle Obama. Cindy would be serving jail time for drug theft if her husband wasn’t a Senator. She is certainly not the kind of person I’m proud of. She who lives in a glass house shouldn’t throw stones!

I am a lifelong Dem…never voted anything but “D” on the ballot. But if Obama is the Dem candidate in November, I will leave the party and likely vote for McCain. Obama is and arrogant elitist that has NO substance whatsoever. And what I can figure out from his “light policies” is that he is a very traditional liberal democrat, which under normal conditions I’d be excited. But…we are being lied to: he is not “unique,” different, a new kind of politician, a uniter and all these other crazy things he claims to be. He has no new or original ideas–they are recycled “old” liberal democratic party ideas. He wont change Washington. If anyone is really listening–he sounds a lot like Bush in 2000 (albeit more eloquent). So, there is no way I could vote for him this fall. I’d be a hypocrite for doing so (as will millions of Americans who have bashed Bush). Obama is an opportunistic light weight. The emperor has “no” clothes! And, Michelle’s recent comments give us a glimpse into the psyche of this family. It’s beyond frightening!

This is not a first for Michelle. She has made some other pretty outrageous statements and she is clearly playing the political game oldstyle. She like her husband gets a pass from the press. Only the republican opponent has been able to get away with challenging her. If it were Hillary, she would be a racist.

In my opinion, Michelle is one of the brightest, an achiever, proud American that America ever produced. America should rather be proud of Michelle Obama. If she was not a black woman, the media would not have spinned this cruel allegation out of context. Her statment rather reflects a character of a states woman. Those who are in the business of misinformation, are doing deservice to the good people of America who hope for a better inclusive America.

a teacher of english composition for 35 years, it is my experience that people with harvard university degrees consider their words carefully: they know what they are going to say and they know how they are going to say it. Mrs. Obama’s first utterance was quite clear–it is what she believes. Her explanation is not easy to follow; it is fabrication. If she is not proud of this country, she is unfit to be first lady, period. Is that clear?

Michelle will not do or say anything to disenstate her husband from being the president ot the united states. I PRAY THAT OBAMA GET TEXAS AND OHIO. I believe in Hillary, but Obama has more chracteristics for being the president of the united states. Obama will focus on more important things than worrying about the media. Seems like everyone missed the real point of the comment.
Let’s start with the mandatory acknowledgment that John McCain is a true American hero. A freedom fighter who suffered and sacrificed for his country and is owed a debt of gratitude that can and never will be repayable. Never.
And don’t count on Mr McCain to ever let you forget it either. He mentions it in every speech that he makes. Which has to tell you something.
For Commander in Chief McCain, there will be only one mission left. Root out the enemy where ever he may be hiding/plotting to destroy the harmony here in beautiful harmonious loving American and kill him/her.
Repeat until there is ZERO threat remaining.
So, under that regime, there is simply one code of ethic to follow. Here it is:
You are either with us or, you are a terrorist enemy.
Simple right? Down to earth John McCain will keep it nice and simple for everyone to understand.
Here’s an outlandish proposition, If we were already operating under the McCain dogma, it would not have been shocking to have seen ten commando garbed soldiers of fortune drop out of the sky and bag her right there on stage for an attack on the glorious freedom America so dearly honors.
Given the fact that your rights have been totally stripped by the Patriot act, It will not be that difficult for this mission to be accomplished.
In fact, I would not be writing this because I am not stupid enough to miss the point that I too under that sort of regime would be a terrorist.
The new American motto, suspected until proven loyal to the party. Free Water boarding available for all citizens suffering any doubts about allegiance to the national credo. You know, the one that says, our book is right yours is wrong.
There was no intention for this to be harsh sounding or ranting in any way. But, if you fail to read the comment by Mrs McCain in this way, you are in for a nasty eye opener in the event that he gets installed into the Big house.
you’ve been warned.

after reading majority of the comments were posted,i feel sorry for those whom attacked michelle obama, not because i´m an admirer of obama, but because they didn´t show a sense of realistic thinking, all what they´ve manifsted is their rejection to their rights as human-beings who live on an american soil(the promoters of democracy & human rights).
my respond to those which i consider them really ignorants is:
she is an elite graduate, and eloquent person.and i don´t think a witch like cindy are eligable to evaluate her, because she really doesn´t understand nor comprehend what she´s said.
second of all, when a person say something and others don´t get the meaning of their saying, that person the only one could clarify what he/she meant.
finally:i´d like to say no matter what the clinton´s would do- Mr. barak would win the nomination, and would beat mckain.

I am not proud to read posts that people who “love” our country spew out. This is disturbing and disappointing. This is what people from the world read and decide America is all about? Anyone who watches the speech Michelle gave will understand what the context of what she was saying. This kind of thing is why people DON’T WANT to be involved in the political process. The opposition and the media put “sound bites” out there to get news out of no news. Because they know people will watch the news show and buy a newspaper or read an article on the net.
Those who have supported another candidate will not be voting for Sen. Obama anyway. I that pray most Americans are NOT reflected in the shameless posts here, very ugly and mean spirited. The kind of remarks aimed at chocking the HOPE right out of people. Sen. Obama has character and faith that people of all races and beliefs can come together to work together. After reading these comments, it sounds like we have farther to go than I had HOPED. As a teacher, I love all my students the same and see in their innocent faces what the future CAN BE. Young people are not born with mean spirits and hate, adults teach it to them. The youth are moving us into the direction of a better future. They don’t think like some people here. Good for them.
Please move on people. This was much ado about not much. The point is to work TOGETHER as Americans not tear each other apart. We can do better.
MLK said “We can live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” Please check yourselves. Someone will win and someone will lose, but we all have to share this earth together. God Bless America (and he will when we treat each other as he commanded us to do.)

Ignorance of our history? Can this election open up an honest dialogue about the differences we all live in this country? Can we even begin to acknowledge the times during the history of this nation in the past 200 years that America has not upheld those ideals it promotes?
Ignorance of our foreign policy? Our nation has achieved monumental success and is a global superpower. Yet we turn a blind eye to how we got there. We are not ready for honest dialogue not yet.
I am sure there are many times though a parent may love their child, they are not proud of some of their decisions.
Our history is not free from the stain of blood of those Americans who were sacrificed on the altar of the Almighty Dollar to create the empire we now have.
WE still have a long way to go in this nation before we LIVE the ideals set forth in our Constitution. For those very ideals of Freedom and Liberty were written with slaves in the next room while genocide of Native people occured throughout the land to make way.
Both people have a history and a wisdom that has been discarded, deemded to be of no value simply because it was not European.
Yet it is those very values and wisdoms that were trampled that have saved America from itself time and time again.
We need to ask why instead of condemning. We don’t all share the same opinions, religions, culture or values.
True democracy makes room to maturely discuss them. We have come a long way, we have not arrived yet.

When the GOP starts picking at stuff like this it simply means they are SCARED. They should be. The reign of propaganda and terror is nearly over. McCain and his wife need to think twice before throwing stones, especially over something so trivial. McCain was still married and living with his wife & kids when he started chasing/dating Cindy. McCain was one of the Keating Five, big stink there. Cindy started a charity and then used it as her personal pharmacy to feed her addiction to painkillers. She was offered a “diversion program” rather than jail. McCain was in bed (seriously) with a lobbyist by the name of Vicki Iseman and his handlers had to clean up his mess. And THESE people are going to point fingers at others? Give me a break. Anyone but McCain in ’08. He’s just W’s Mini Me.

The distruction of America was said,
“It will come from the Inside”, not “The outside”. Obama is that man.
He’s all talk! Inspiring? Apparently,
Michelle has been very uninspired for most of her adult life! That’s alot of wasted time. Hillary has proved to withold many trials and tribulations and has never let anything get in the way of her work and as first lady, Senator and I believe she is definately the stronger presidential candidate. She’s proved that she is a strong leader
just from her track record. Insiring talk is “Just Words!” With no real experience to back it up. Maybe Oprah can be his vice President. I salute Hillary Clinton and John Macain, 2 very proud and experienced candidates whom are very proud to be Americans all of their adult life!

Good evening all…I just wanted to make a few comments coming from a background that seems to be targeted for their valid opinions. As a 22 year old minority female, who is active in politics, I am extremely proud of where this country is today as opposed to where it was say last February. I am also a Social Work student and intern. During this historical time, politics are on the table all the time and bringing it up at work has become a norm. Recently I was speaking to a young co-worker about her experience as a new social worker the year Bush was inaugurated. She told me that the day after she was hired was the first day that Bush was in office–and it was also the day when 90% of the grants that fund our agency were cut. Now, you want to talk about being proud? Talk about someone who believes that this country is in dire need of change. One of the comments on here states that blacks and hispanics are the ones who reap the benefit from health care reform…think about how much of the total population is white…and how much of them are poor, and then compare that with either the LATINO (because Latino–not Hispanic–is pc) or the black populations. Currently people in this “great land” are creating a black and white…there is no gray and that is unfair to the exception. Next time you have something to say, don’t be so stereotypical. And thanks Mrs. Obama for standing up for what you believe.

Give her a break. She is for one heck of a ride as possibly the first black first lady. People seem to think since she is black, it will be different for her than any other first lady. I think not. I think all first ladies had a hard job where they have to watch every word they say of it will be plastered around the world.

Mrs. Obama graduated with honors from Princeton. She attended schools for gifted and achieving students all of her academic life. She worked for and earned everything that she has accomplished in spite of haters. – When my father attended a large midwestern university in the 1940′s and 1950′s, he was told by more than one professor that they would never award a black student an A, (this professor used the N word, not black student). My father still managed to become a member of Phi Beta Kappa in spite of racist professors. When he entered medical school at that same institution, their quota was to admit only 2 black students per entering class. He earned the highest score ever recorded on his surgical board exams when he took them. Many high achieving African Americans have had to endure racism and skepticism from suspicious and envious whites and blacks, but we never let it hold us back. I am proud of Barack and Michelle.

I believe that Michelle Obama is a beautiful, intelligent, and hard-working woman. I’d like to see some of you get on stage sometimes three times a day, on the road, missing your kids, and see how you come out. Michelle grew up as an African American female in a sometimes racist and unfair society. So, I agree this is the first time I’ve been really proud to be an American.

I agreed with Cindy McCain, initially. However, I remebered that Michelle Obama was very careful to say her ADULT life, so I decided to do some math. Michelle is 42 years old, so that means that her adult life would have began in 1987, the same year George H.W. Bush ran for president. Following Bush’s presidency was Clinton, and following Clinton’s was George W. Bush. Therefore, I believe that Mrs. Obama was trying to take a sublte swipe at the Bush-Clinton-Bush pattern in the white house. I also now understand that she was trying to say she’s proud b/c it looks like it’s a pattern the American people are actively ready to break. Could she have worded her statement better? Certainly.
If were honest though, we love our family members, thought they may not always make us proud. Why shouldn’t the same be so for our country. A president having an affair with his intern and lying about shouldn’t make us proud. The fact that women still earn .80 on a man’s $1.00 shouldn’t make us proud. Being deceived about weapons of mass destruction shouln’t make us proud. (please note, all of the events I mentioned happened between 1987 and now.)

pa·tri·ot·ism
–noun
devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country; national loyalty.
proud
–adjective
1. feeling pleasure or satisfaction over something regarded as highly honorable or creditable to oneself (often fol. by of, an infinitive, or a clause).
2. having, proceeding from, or showing a high opinion of one’s own dignity, importance, or superiority.
3. having or showing self-respect or self-esteem.
4. highly gratifying to the feelings or self-esteem: It was a proud day for him when his son entered college.
5. highly honorable or creditable: a proud achievement.
6. stately, majestic, or magnificent: proud cities.
7. of lofty dignity or distinction: a proud name; proud nobles.
8. Chiefly South Midland and Southern U.S. pleased; happy: I’m proud to meet you.
9. full of vigor and spirit: a proud young stallion.
10. Obsolete. brave.
I post this to demonstrate the difference between pride and patriotism. To draw an analogy consider America your child. You always love them but sometime there actions are disgraceful and you are less than proud of them.
The short version of this: You can lack pride in your country and still be patriotic.

Saddam DID have weapons of mass destruction – you were not lied to. He admitted destroying such to an embedded FBI agent.
What Michelle Obama did was show the true perspective of the liberal democrats … nothing anyone does, except them, is right or good enough. And, if what THEY do FAILS, then it is someone ELSE’S fault! They live lives of double standards and they pick and choose those things which they haven’t enough backbone to act upon to become indignant over. They want a socialist system in which to live … that way, no one EVER has to be personally responsible for their shortcomings or failures. The race card would certainly become outdated – - however, look at how many liberals whine and bellyache (still) over KATRINA … has ONE of them EVER accused the idiot Mayor-chocolate-NAGIN (WHO is prejudice??) of not handling the situation as it should have been? HE, and the state of LA, are THE ONES responsible for the tragedy that happened – they’d known for DECADES what would happen if hit by a hurricane of that magnitude … yet, they didn’t even maintain the levees as they should have (much less apply for matching federal funds with which to do it) or even make sure that their own citizens were evacuated BEFORE the hurricane hit(& they had DAYS!) They’d rather blame Bush and the Federal government … no personal responsibility on THEIR parts, oh no … even though George Bush allotted MORE money for those levees than anyone else prior! This is just one little example … if a far left liberal gets into the white house, things really WILL be the administration’s fault because all those of the same ilk will not take care of themselves … they are waiting on the GOVERNMENT to do it. And, as far as Michelle O., she truly showed her IGNORANCE and the fact that she sees only from a very narrow and “gimme” frame of reference.

This is a moot point, simply because the Mccain and Clinton camps are grasping for straws as they unsuccessfully try to slow the momentum of “The Obama Movement.” It’s sad to see such “experienced” politicians have to resort to such desparate tactics because a “newbie” has come along and stolen the show. Those that are smart enough to see past all of the spin-doctor tactics are the ones who will actually vote. It’s a blessing in disguise for the Obama camp simply because it opens their eyes to what people will resort to when they are desparate for votes. I am sure that they will be much more careful in what they say, and how they say it.

I am truly thankful that for the past 7.5 years that we have had a president that has stood tall and protected the unborn child instead of a man like Clinton who had such a hard heart that 2 times vetoed the partial birth abortion bill. Both Hilary and Obamma have no respect for the unborn and new born where the “mother” does not want the child. Since Roe about 50 million babies have lost their lives and then add to that the many who would have children of their own this country will pay a high price not including the devaluing of life of the old and feeble but the handicaped. Just from a pratical stand point think about how the lost of this many wage earners will affect Social Security. We have lost our soul and Obamma is not going to help us recover it.

My country tears for thee, sweet land f liberty of thee i sing! For those of you that can honestly say that they have always been proud of America, has never journeyed outside of America or followed the history of the country! Here’s where Hope comes into play. A feeling that something will change, for the better. Once again Hope being a word of starting the journey, With Obama in the white House, free speech will be relished and protected.

Well, now we know that Cindy McCain can speak up for herself, and more importantly, for Our country.. Sometimes a few well chosen words are more impressive than a continual flapping Mouth Piece.. I now have a higher opinion of Mrs McCain.

It is interesting how they chewed Obama up for lack of words. Noteworthy to mention, everyone borrows words. We all hear phrases or words that we feel expresses what we mean and oftentimes use them. Please tell me who doesn’t! Nevertheless, the look a like Joan Rivers (Cindy Mcain) actually opened her mouth to remark on something that was said by Michelle Obama. Thank God Michelle said that or we might never have known that the trophy wife had a voice. Girl get a life.

You all pay way too much attention to the Executive. Who especially gives a crap what their Husbands/Wifes have to say? It’s Congress that’s in power in this country – they write the laws. If they wanted to impeach the chimp they would have – you saw what they did to Clemens and his wife. You can vote for the Prez all you want, but you can’t vote for 48 Senators, and if you’re in DC, you can’t vote for any of the ########.

I am really tired of dirty politics, now it is mccain’s wife turn playing on words after Hillary Clinton. Shame on you cindy, I felt that politicising of innocent words of micheale is a disrespect act to american people, we are not discredit or make use of prefernces one candidiate over the other by this kind of dirty politics but on the polices, authencity, inteligence, electiblity, experiance, judgement and others. Don’t be wrong that we are following you when you tell us what it is not right. With out doubt, I knew that Micheale Obama used those statement to put across somthing else not the way you said. If she was not proud of her country, she would not have shown green light to her husband to run for the presidency. Please take a lesson from Hillary since a wise person learn from somebody’s mistake.

.Most McCainians were ready to vote for Guliani or Romney before McCain realized how weak the GOP field really was. McCain lost the GOP nomination back when Bush ran, and he’s going to lose the election in November. “Superstitious Navy Aviator?” Give me a break. So what will he attribute the economic woes of this nation too, walking under a ladder? breaking a mirror? People may have bought Bush’s fear politics in 2004 but this is a new day, and McCain has far less appeal. Let’s talk about experience. How much experience as Commander in Chief, did any past Commander in Chief have before they were first elected? Did Arnold Schwarzennegger have any political experience before becoming Gov of Cali? And Ronald Reagan….nuff said. The job of the President is not to micromanage the entire nation. Your a fool if you think that it’s The President’s job to make sure you go to school, get a good job, stay out of trouble, raise your D**N kids, keep your neighborhood free of filth and crime, and live a decent life. BUT it IS a President’s job to unite people under one cause. It IS the President’s job to motivate people to want to change this country, as well as themselves, for the BETTER. If Mr. Obama can do either of these things, he has already succeeded where Bush has SO MISERABLY failed.

If you are not a minority you really wont understand the true meaning of what Michelle is saying. This is not racist this is a fact. Cindy McCain Stole drugs from her own company. Barack Obama wrote about his use of drugs. Lets see our present President used COCAINE. How many people are in this forum are without drug use or abuse of some sort.

Unfortunately, in this country more people recognize Cindy Lou Who than Cindy McCain and perhaps for good reason. Cindly Lou Who never bashed the Grinch or took a cheap shot when she had an opportunity.
I agree with Michelle – what have we had to be proud of in the last 12 years of the Presidency? Let’s face it, there hasn’t been a lot to be proud of. We spend billions of dollars on a useless war and ignore the victims of natural disasters in our own country. Our health care system is third world and American made goods are a distant memory. We let China poison our pets, our kids and our medicine. And Osama bin Ladin is still a free man (and don’t say we don’t know where he is)!
Is THIS an America to be proud of?
When we put Americans FIRST, then we shall truly be a nation to be proud of, and I think we are slowly making a comeback. It definitely IS time for change.

McCain, Clinton, and the media have once again blown up a simple–and true–statement from the Obamas.
Though I believe Michelle could–and should–have worded this statement differently, just to make it really clear, her whole point was obvious–for the first time, she is proud that her countr is actually participating–and I mean REALLY participating–in the political process.
There are much more important issues that need to be discussed–attempts to undermine the Obamas can wait until another day.

Bush said he had a drinking problem, which he overcame years ago. There is not evidence he used cocaine, as you allege. Obama admits he used cocaine –and had the audacity to do so in front of impressionable teenagers.
I’ve never used illegal drugs, but a friend of mine died 2 days ago as a result of drug and alcohol abuse. He was in his 40′s and left behind a lady who loves him dearly and a 2-year old son, who will not remember his father.
I think it was grossly irresponsible for Obama to go to a high school and tell of his own drug abuse. What a poor example. Kids aren’t going to listen to “do as I say, not as I do.”
If we want our kids to respect moral authority, we need to support leaders who’s lives advocate for a high standard of moral integrity.

Michelle Obama meant exactly what she said. She got lost in her speech and could not find her line so she inserted her thought. She has made several slip ups, she said she will think about supporting the democratic ticket, if her husband is not the nominee. Definitely this is the attitude to show for party loyalty very patriotic. Whenever she and Barack Hussein Obama get off the speechwriter’s script there a freudian slip. I call it the real truth. Obama has already shown what he thinks of this country in the way he does not recognize the American flag or the national anthem. Yet these pied pipers democratic are going to let him be their presidential nominee.

Honesty is The best policy. There is no reason to hide the truth. I am truly saddened by your loss. That is why it is important to inform and educate. History is known to repeat if allowed. Now someone needs to help that 2 year old or he may fall prey to the same lifestyle.
Now do you really believe every thing Bush says. Since he says he only had a drinking problem.

This is such a non-story! I’m not an Obama supporter but I’m honest. The women clearly stated that “..for the first time she was REALLY proud…” For those of us who had at least a 6 grade education can infer that she was already proud from the beginning but is now prouder. In addition she was referring to the political process. People, there are many substantive reasons to be against a particular candidate but I’m sorry this doesn’t pass the smell test. Furthermore, I think it more disturbing that I’m seeing edited versions circulating with the “REALLY” deleted. Folks lets advocate a non-corrupt process. Smears should not be tolerated.

I wonder how many of these folks who are claiming that Obama misspoke ran to defend GWB when he made some verbal blunder? My guess is zero. That’s how the game is played. The person you support can do no wrong and the person you are against can do no right. It’s all a very stupid game that brings out the hypocrisy in all of us. I can think of other reasons to not want Barack for president other than his annoying wife making stupid statements. Things like his policies. Very charismatic guy with very scary ideas.

I would have to agree with Michelle. There is not a whole lot about this country in the last seven years under Bush to be proud of. She like many of us are disgusted by the hypocracy and corruption that have been the hallmark of this administration. I also understand what she says in another context. African American people have not had the best time of it in this country and we have a long way to go to heal the racial divide in this country. The fact that all kinds of people are being attracted to Obama’s message is something to be proud of.

America stood idle while Bush stole the 2000 election and then re-elected the dim-wit after he invaded the wrong country. America stood silent while Bush and company stifled dissent about a war and created “free speech zones”. America stood idle while W committed treason by outing a key CIA agent… all for political revenge. America stood silent while Bush dismantled the Constitution. America stood silent while this administration trampled our civil liberties and tapped our phones and read our email. Yeah, I guess maybe I can relate to what Michelle Obama said. Shame on Americans for not being proud in being an US Citizen. There is something fundamentally wrong with their mind or they have been in a closet the majority of their lives. The oppertunities given to citizens of this country far outweigh what any other country can give you on this planet. It is not handed to you like some of the movie stars we see, most of us have to work for it. But its there. Education, job oppertunities and advancement in your life if YOU apply yourself is out there in the US. This crying game from many of the bloggers is whining for a socialist type of government. That is contrary to what our constitution upholds and the ideals many throughout US History have fought for. You can whine all you want like Obamas wife but she has had a great life ($350K a year), and like you have little to whine about.

As a white female supporter of neither Bill, Cindy, nor Michelle, I have to say that her remark (and don’t forget she DID say ‘adult life’) struck a cord with me. She’s right. We Americans have gone from being the proudest most-loved nation in the world to being the least loved nation. And we’re becoming a 2nd rate country. This has all come about in my ADULT lifetime! Am I proud to be an American? Absolutely! Am I proud of my country and what it’s done in my name as an American? Not too much lately. And by the way, Cindy McCain. Mrs. Obama DID NOT say she wasn’t proud of her country. She said for the first time in her adult life SHE WAS PROUD OF HER COUNTRY because people are hungry for change. Big difference from the spin you and the Hillary supporters put on her remarks.

Amen to Alyce Claerbaut!
I read this blog and my heart failed me for the low and arcaine remarks touted by a great number of you.
These remarks expose the obvoious feelings of bigotry and prejudice that still has a hold on many in our great nation. (two words that have not been stated through out this discourse)
I am an American. I was born an American and am proud of that. However, that does not blind me to the flaws of my country. It is clear to me that our experiences in this country can differ soo greatly that our perception of a valid statement could cause such opposing reactions.
This moment in our nations history has been the greatest source of pride for many in this country and for my generation. If we actually knew our contry’s history we would understand this.

When someone prefaces their remarks – the original boneheaded one – and the supposed clarification of those “boneheaded” remarks with “Let me tell you something” – they really want you to listen to what’s coming next. In both cases her words were very deliberate. My 13 year old son was quick to focus on “in my adult life”. Presumably, this is a reference to the gains made through the hard work in the 50′s and 60′s by civil rights champions. (I digress here but the fact is that King and others did not pass the landmark Civil Rights legislation, that master politician, Lyndon Johnson did – because that’s what it takes, someone with sharp elbows and a knowledge of the legislative process.) Don’t tell me words don’t matter – they’re reflective of her true beliefs.
People should check out Newsweek’s cover story this week. You may not be aware that her senior thesis focused on her experience as an african american at Princeton. It’s under lock and key and not available to the public but the little attention given in the article to her campus experience makes it seem that it was in college that she picked up that chip on her shoulder.

Mrs. Obama did say she was proud of her country too, only she qualified it to say for the first time in her adult life. Well, let’s see, she was born in 1964, so her adult life began in 1985. Reagan was in his last term, followed by Bush, Clinton, and Bush. Her words struck a chord with me because I am very proud to be an American. But I’m not proud of what the leaders of my country (for the most part) have done to the prestige, morals, and morale of my country since 1985. I, like Michelle Obama, for the first time in my adult life am proud of America because the people are hungry for change. And with a less spin and venom from the Clinton camp, maybe we’ll get the change we need. I know what we’ll get with Hillary or McCain. This white female will vote for at least a chance to get away from the past 20 years.

Even parents can be disappointed by their child but does it mean that they do not love their child? This woman is right. Today there are far more people paying attention and voting for change that there have ever been in the history of this country. How many people do you think even knew about delegates and super delegates in 2007? How about now? People paying attention to this process and if you did not get what she was saying, you need to buy, “Comprehending…for Idiots.” It is pathetic.

Michelle Obama back-tracking on her statement is too little too late. People’s first thought is normally their true feelings. The Obamas are an arrogant pair that feels this country has not given them enough. While they mock this nation they are urging people to let them lead, they have had priviledge lives that some of us can only dream about. They are living in a multi million dollar home with vacation homes all over the country and this is the one time in her adult life that’s she been proud? I am a non-white american who is either rich or priviledged. I have a way to go still to even reach what people call ‘upper middle class’. However, for each item on a list of want I have for america, there are dozens of blessings I count on. I am proud to be an american because at the end of day….I am still richer, better and have more opportunities here then I can ever dream of elsewhere. This country is a glass half full for me while the millionair Obamas see it as a glass half empty. I truely do not believe, I want that type of thinking in the whitehouse….I do not believe they understand the true depth of love people have for this country even in the worst of times.

The best thing she could do for her husband if she wants him to win the nomination is to stay home and keep her mouth shut. If she wants him to lose, keep on campaigning Michelle. John Kerry had the same problem with his wife, she had a bad mouth on her too and it certainly did not help him.

I’m a little younger the Michelle Obama, and I’ve been proud of my country my entire life. Our backgrounds are quite different; I went to high school and college (an historically black college) in Mississippi before joining the Navy. I actively supported any democrat because I beleived they were good for America. Even after serving for six years in the Navy where I gained an appreciation for our strong military and a recognition of just how many jobs the Dept of Defense provides for American (world’s largest employer once you count all the subcontractors), I still voted for Clinton (both times) because I thought he better represented me as a Black American. By the way, I voted for him while teaching ROTC in Baton Rouge, LA; I gladly left the state in 1998 when I saw how ignorantly corrupt many local and state officials were who knew the state’s infrastructure (schools, roads, levees) was in sore need of repair, but squandered and stole tax dollars instead of taking care of the of the people who elected them. Anyone who sees the tragedy in New Orleans as the fault of the Bush Administration is not looking at the whole picture; it happened well before 2005, and rebuilding homes will not fix it. In the time since, my family and I have lived in both Japan and Italy, and I’ve visited dozens of countries and talked to thousands of people worldwide (including Iraq, which did have weapons of mass destruction) — I see the regard that citizens of other countries have for America as well as the respect the democratic, freedom-loving countries have for President Bush. Many forget how we cheered when he vowed to “stay the course” in the war on terorism after 9/11. He promised we would not falter and we would not fail, but because so many of us are weak in our own resolve, we call our leader who has done what he promised us he’d do a failure. Unlike Michelle Obama, I’ve always been proud of America, but I’m saddened that there are those who believe the president who has failed us (or at least me) in the past 16 years was George W. Bush.

You know people there are Americans that are not living the American dream. She did say in her Adult lifetime.Meaning she was really proud until she grew up and saw the wickedness that is everpresent in this country. Most of you that cannot understand what she is saying probably never had to struggle to pay bills see poverty or know anyone in that situation.Of course you’re proud. All you see is opportunity because someone made it available to you.You have benefited from someone you may know or the family you were born into. There is a class and race gap in this country that keeps the majority of those with darker skin in a lower socioeconomic statis.Of course she would see the pains of others it even though she may not live it because most people of color know what is like to struggle and look at how many people in her race( especially men) are locked up in prison, on there way there or dead.Who would be proud of that.African Americans are brought up to beleive they will never be seen as good as their white counterparts. Blacks are told they have to work twice as hard as a white person to get minimal recognition. So when she see’s America embracing this election it does something to her and it is overwhelming. She feels a pride she may have only felt as a child. So if you’re proud good for you.Not everyone is happy and proud all the time.If you’re well off of course your outlook is going to be different from the not so fortunate.Duh.

If she bashed her country, or her fellow americans in that thesis …
Barack’s rocketship is out of gas.
Publish that thesis — to remove all doubts.

I want to say Bravo & Ditto to Tony regarding all the vitriolic criticism of Michelle Obama & Cindy McCain too. Let’s “turn the page” & agree to a higher level of public discourse than this petty nonsense.

San Francisco CA said: “People’s first thought is normally their true feelings.”
So I guess Hillary meant it when she slammed stay-at-home Moms with her,”I guess I could have stayed home and baked cookies, but I chose to have a career instead.” remark. Sure wish she had!

Please, lots of people struggle to pay their bills every day. Not everyone on here was born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Trying to make amends for what you think she meant is useless. All I know is that I didn’t get an extra 230 points added to my SAT scores to get into an elite school. I could have used it.

Michelle Obama should try living in another country , if she is not happy here . It’s like her husband said ” time
for a change ” for both of them ! Thank
you Michelle for telling the world how
you feel about American & American,s !

I don’t even think your Obama can “change” such bitterness you have.

So I guess if her husband loses she won’t like America anymore, how sad, if you don’t get your way or if things aren’t exactly the way you think they should be, then you take it out on America.

While I think too many people are making too much out of a remark taken out of context, it did get me thinking. I’m a bit older than Michelle but there haven’t been any times I was ‘really proud’ of my country either. Notice the ‘really’ in my statement and in Michelle’s. Yes, there have been time I’ve been proud but not really proud. And there have been too many times I’ve been appalled. Like our federal government’s response to Katrina, like Bush Sr. cancelling Carter’s funds for alternative energy research, like the way tabloid news has slowly taken over almost all national news, like the U.S. invading Iraq, like Reagan’s obviously flawed ‘trickle down’ economic theory padding the pockets of the rich while the middle-class shrank and the poor class grew as well as our national debt, etc. Think about it. 35 million with no health insurance, 35 million going to bed hungry in our country. We have a lot of work to do before we can be ‘really proud’ if we are being really honest about our country.

I think Michelle was refering to the fact that she is proud of this country for voting for a black man for president. White people have repressed blacks and have never given them the chance for the power and lifestyle that they deserve in order to live the American dream.

i’ve been following the american election and i think the mindset against which michelle made the comments is one more reason why american jails are disproportionately fill with blacks am. MICHELLE YOU ARE INVITED TO SPEND A WEEKEND IN sonewein, Monrovia liberia, WA. after which you would be proud of AMERICA FOR EVER AND EVER, AMEN

I am and have always bee proud to be an american, no matter what the situation. We truly do live in the greatest country in the world. I have voted in every election since I turned 18, some times the other person won but I have always supported who ever was elected. This is the first time in my life (52 years) that I would actually think about moving to Canada should that ignorant idiot that does not pledge to our flag and his big mouth wife (the Obama’s) get elected to lead our great country

Why must we love our country “unconditionally”? There is so very much wrong with this country! Look at what we’ve done to native americans (stolen territory/broken treaties, african americans (slavery/segregation), vietnamese (unjust war) and iraqi’s (un-lawful war/stolen oil) all in the name of democracy! Get some grit people, and stand up for what is right. “My country, right or wrong” IS dead wrong. We need to work to make our country ethical and moral again. If you are happy with the status quo, then you are part of the problem! Go Michelle! I couldn’t agree with you more.

Cindy Mccain was a special ed teacher to severely disabled children. She has a son who is a marine and has done double duty in Iraq. She faces the possibility of her son being killed in this war- what was that post of her not experiencing real life?

Time to put an end to “democracy”. Time to put an end to “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness” Time to dig the grave for “evil capitalism”. Time to spill the blood of burgeoise on the streets. Time to implement ‘from each according to his capability, to each according to his need” Time for change. Time for Obama.

John McCain for PRESIDENT!!

The only reason I write this note is because of McCain’s wife, who proposes to originally be against her husband running for President, so easily jumps on the ‘political’ bandwagon of lies and deceit.
I have never liked politics because to me it’s all a deception. There have been few instances where we actually had Presidents that were ‘for the people’. Those Presidents were assasinated!
I personally understand Michele Obama’s comment and what she meant. Mrs. McCain stated that she has been fortunate – well good for her! I am sure that she can appreciate America – because if she was in another country, she would find out what it’s really like in the real world! We need a President that knows what it is like in the real world.
The President’s job is to do what’s best for it’s people, not just a select ‘fortunate’ few.
America was and is Blessed by God; and no matter how much man tries to remove God – He is and always will be running the show and at this point, I firmly beleive that God designated Barama for this position…

I think Cindy should proud to be an American ,proud she was able to write false perscriptions for drugs through her charity, proud she was a drug addict, proud to channel money to her husband from her vast company fortune and refuse to open tax records,Thanks Cindy you inspire me. NOT

Can we really afford to have Michelle Obama making these stupid/moronic statements as first lady? Think before you talk. Since most of these supposed innocent statements are halftruths. I agree…both Obama’s are inexperienced to lead our country and really deep inside they are unpatriotic (until now since they have lots of money). I am really scared of Obama being president…Change that I can believe in that’s scarier than now!!!

I understand what Michelle Obama meant.
and I believe most intelligent people
understand and can relate to what she was trying to verbalize. The feeling of inspired by your pride in your country.
I think Michelle Obama will be a 1st lady that we can be proud of.She will take on real first lady projects that make a difference in the working classd communities of America.Real issues that relate in everyday lives. Those of you who prefer Cindy McCain and before you bring up her disabled Children’s charity she started, look in to her diversion of pain killers. She diverted (that means she stole them)painkillers that were supposed to be for children who were getting operations.she was facing federal charges which were dropped due to her hubbies influence.
The same hubby who wants to increase funding for prisons and harder sentencing for drug offenders.
Posted by: christine n | May 31, 2008, 11:21 am 11:21 am
I doubt any child was deprived of pain killers because of Cindy McCain’s drug addiction. Besides, you liberals have a long history of overlooking law breakers and people with vices. So get over it.
Besides, I’d rather have a former drug-addict as a first lady than a man as president who signs laws and then does his best to cover his tracks after breaking them and depriving a woman her day in court by inducing others to lie under oath.
I’d also rather have a former drug-addict as a first lady than a woman who asks what her country can do for her husband instead of what she can do for her country.

Do you really want a president who will start the 3rd Intifada because he doesn’t know what the heck “undivided Jerusalem” means?
Posted by: w3 | June 18, 2008, 7:44 pm 7:44 pm
How on earth people can actually support Michelle Obama is astounding to me. The woman doesn’t even like her country. If everyone gave up on America when something didn’t go right, we wouldn’t be here today.
Cindy may not have the picture-perfect image, but she at least doesn’t publicly proclaim public distaste for her country. Just looking at Michelle’s expressions on TV and in magazines is disturbing. She appears to be constantly conniving, with an almost evil look. Let’s say Barack wins the nomination (also a disturbing thought). What if something goes wrong? What will Michelle do, jump ship? Switch countries?
I’m not sure about the rest of America, but I know I would prefer the wife of a decorated veteran in the White House.

I think that Cindy tried to stay out of everything because everyone thinks that she is just ditsy and wealthy because her family owns a popular beer company and they wont take her seriously.

I am a white male and I was open to change. Not because I am against the war in Iraq. I think George Bush will be vindicated by history. He may not be a good speaker but he is not stupid. I was willing to look into Obama as a serious contender because he did come across as intelligent and charismatic. A born leader. I was impressed. Bt not for long. The irreverent Jeremia Wright taught me a lesson. Yet, it could heal some wounds to have a colored president. I soon began to realize that this guy is associated with hate mongers and that what sounded charismatic is really rather hollow and unstubstantiated generalities. Change? What change? For better or worse? At my expense? I always thought I am middle-class. But under Obama I will be rich and must be taxed poor. And Michelle clearly meant what she said. This “out of context” excuse is becoming old. Do I want somebody like Michelle in the White House?

I am overwhelmed of the change in America. I was there with segragation, busing, being black attending a white school or rather interacting with whites for the firest time in my life,…. it was hard some of the white accepted us some did not..therefore, I can relate to Ms. Obama’s remarks and so can you, if you see reality of america, it’s history…slavery, civil war and even it’s beginning of its treatment of the Indians.. I welcome a change …. Obama ,,,yes.
