Obama Defends Driver’s Licenses for Illegals in Interview with ABC News

ABC News’ Teddy Davis Reports: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told ABC’s David Muir Saturday that his support for driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants will not block his path to the White House because he and G.O.P. frontrunner John McCain share substantial overlap on immigration.

"I think they will pounce on any issue that has to do with immigration," said Obama, referring to Republicans, "but my position has been very similar to John McCain’s, who’s may be the likely Republican nominee, and if he wants to try to parse out this one issue of driver’s licenses, an issue of public safety, my response is that we have to solve the overall problem and this driver’s license issue is a distraction."

McCain does not support driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants but he shares Obama’s support for giving illegal immigrants a path to citizenship without requiring them to leave the United States.

Obama defended his stance on driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants on the same day that La Opinion, the nation’s largest Spanish language newspaper, cited his support for licenses — and Sen. Hillary Clinton’s, D-N.Y., opposition — in its endorsement of Obama.

"We were disappointed with her calculated opposition to driver’s licenses for the undocumented, which contrasts markedly from the forceful argument in support made by Obama," wrote La Opinion’s editorial board. "We understand that this is an extremely controversial issue but we believe there is only one right position and it is that of the senator from Illinois."

While Obama’s position on driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants helped him win the endorsement of La Opinion, Republican Party officials believe that it could become a lightening rod in the general election.

"With positions like this, it’s easy to understand how Obama is labeled as ‘most liberal’ Senator," said Republican National Committee spokesman Alex Conant, referring to a study of 2007 votes by National Journal magazine. "It’s a position that may appeal to the left-wing, but the vast majority of Americans reject. There’s no question it may help in some primaries, but it’ll hurt him in the general. To the degree that immigration will be an issue this fall — and it will be — so will Obama’s unpopular stance on drivers’ licenses."

Asked about the Republican criticism which is already being directed at him, Obama said, "Well, I’m sure that the Republicans will try to make immigration an issue because they’ve been talking about it in political terms instead of trying to solve the problem. But I’ve been very clear working with John McCain and Ted Kennedy and others that we have to have a comprehensive reform package and if we are doing what we need to do to control the borders, if we are doing what we need to do in cracking down on employers who are hiring undocumented workers and undermining U.S. workers then we shouldn’t have a problem with driver’s licenses because we will have legal workers here in this country as opposed to illegal ones."

"So, I’m interested," he continued, "in solving the problem, not perpetuating the sort of political football we’ve been seeing out here."

During his interview with ABC News, Obama also brushed off the suggestion that his recent endorsement from MoveOn.org, the liberal anti-war organization, could undermine his centrist image.

"Well, David, I’m hearing this theme of Republicans suggesting that I’m too liberal, keep in mind that it was only last week that I was a follower of Ronald Reagan," said Obama, referring to criticism recently directed at him by Clinton for comments he made about the former president to a Nevada newspaper. "This is the politics of the past, where folks are trying to parse out and figure out who’s Left and who’s Right. I’m interested in solving problems, that’s what I think the American people are interested in, they want to get past these old ideological arguments that dominated so much of our politics over the last 20 years."

"They want to see problems solved," he continued, "how do we keep people in their homes, how do we make sure that they get jobs that pay a living wage, how do we make sure that everyone has health care, how can kids go to college. If we’re focused on those issues then I think we’ll do just fine."

"Look," he added, "we’re here in Idaho, considered perhaps the Reddest state in the country where the last time out you had 5,000 Democrats participating in a caucus, we had 13,000 people in an arena, just a few moments ago. So, I think it gives you an indication people are interested in looking to the future and not getting into these same old divisive arguments."

The interview will air Saturday on ABC’s "World News".

When will the public wise up & realize this guy will be the death to our country if elected?!!? Stuff like this just proves what a complete moron he is. NO WAY I would EVER vote for him!

Obama is thinking constructively. He deserves to be rewarded and he will take the country in the right direction.

Giving driver’s licenses to illegal aliens only continues to provide support for a very problematic situation. It cannot be defended. Find a path to legal citizenship first. Vote Hillary Clinton.

The “details” of his plan are just a “distraction”. I’m surprised that he has ANY supporters. Oh, I forgot it’s not about race. I think some people would still vote for an Obama/Kwame ticket.

Obama definitely gets my vote. He understands that our country’s problems are complicated. Most people are tired of the politicians running this country. They are tired of the bickering about trivial things. Let’s elect a President who wants to get our country back on track. Go Obama! Yes we can!

Good for you Obama! You are a man of integrity…we certainly need you as our President. Let’s work on solving problems instead of playing the blame game.

Just a quick comment to the friend above who is opposed to the idea of issuing driver’s licenses to undocumented persons.
I worked in the legal profession for over 20 years. I know that it is critically important for safety on the roads that everyone who drives a vehicle in any state has studied the Driver’s Manual and has proven their knowledge of the laws of the road by being able to pass the tests to get a driver’s license.
It is not like anyone is providing a driver’s license to everyone — ONLY THOSE WHO HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO STUDY AND LEARN THE LAWS AND WHO WANT TO OBEY THE LAW AND DRIVE LAWFULLY CAN OBTAIN A DRIVER’S LICENSE. Am I not right here???
Should we penalize them because they are trying to do the right thing and obey the law?? Aren’t we saying that we want undocumented people to obey the law?? Then when they are trying to be good Americans and obey the law by getting a driver’s license, let’s allow them to do so!
Furthermore, if we deny people driver’s licenses, they are not able to obtain car insurance AND THAT LEAVES EVERYONE WHO DRIVES IN DANGER OF AN ACCIDENT WITH SOMEONE WHO HAS NO INSURANCE COVERAGE TO PAY FOR DOCTORS, CAR REPAIRS, ETC.
In my home state of Oregon, have seen the devastating problems that arise in accidents with uninsured motorists, and there is no reason for that to happen, if we take the anti-immigrant anger and rhetoric out of the discussion.
I think we need to be realistic and reasonable on this issue. A driver’s license does not equal citizenship — what it does show is a desire to obey the law, study hard to learn the law, and the courage to seek a driver’s license that could be used against them. It also proves that undocumented workers can and do obey the law in obtaining a driver’s license in order to drive, and that they can and do understand the laws governing driving. I agree with Barack Obama’s support of driver’s licenses for undocumented people who study to earn them!

Giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants is a matter of public safety. These people still drive regardless of whether or not they have licenses. Giving them licenses allows the cops to do their jobs more effectively. People forget that cops across the country support Obama’s position.

My bottom line. We will always be lied to, we will never elect the most intelligent, righteous candidate. Actually, in the current field, that would be Ron Paul. If you dismiss this, I suggest you do some research. As to people pulling for Clinton, please look at Judiciary watch, and do a google search under clinton contributions overlap. Obama might be real, or maybe the antichrist, but to me, there is no contest. At least there is hope with Obama. Just think of how many people are becoming involved in politics. This is because people are not being apathetic because they feel hope. We need to nurture that hope.

Obama, give it up, Latino voters have got your number. Too late to kiss up now. Plus we all ready know your typical political moves and the Latinos are not falling for it. Hillary represents real longterm solutions for Latino concerns. Also, too many of your supporters on these posts have denegrated the Latino community, so buzz off.

before Obama (in a debate) is against giving illegals driver’s licenses now he is for it? A flip-flop.

Posted by: anon | February 2, 2008, 3:12 pm 3:12 pm

You made my points, michaelinphilly. Without drivers licenses, the rest of us end up paying. People will drive anyway, since in most cities our public transportation is almost nonexistent.
Obama is inspiring and will make a fine president. Can’t wait for November and then January 2009 when there’s NO MORE GW!!!!

Posted by: Jackt51 | February 2, 2008, 3:14 pm 3:14 pm

Very true, michaelinphilly, not giving out a driver’s license only creates more hazards. This is America. People will find a way to come here one way or another. We can work with people or continue the same arrogant & punishing positions we’ve had toward the very people that make our country better — immigrants.

And comparing Obama to Bush is a joke. They couldn’t be more different. Obama is an intelligent, self-made hardworker who never had anything handed to him by elite parents, or a spouse that used to be President. All these racist people posting their idiot opinions in here, make me ashamed to call myself American. I am white, well-educated, upper-middle class, and seriosuly want to begin to move beyond the politics of hate and rage, and division. Obama offers a vision that i think is right for our time, and i fully embrace it.

Yet another reason for illegals to remain illegal.

It is a sad state of affairs when the Laws of our Father can not be held to be Just. How can I trust you with so much when something so small can not be dealt with. It is wrong, think 1986 and remember what we called for. They need to return and get in line behind those who seek a proper and legal entry into the USA. Increase the work permits by triple during the first 3 months prior and 3 months after the I-date. But seat a date for all prosecution. There will be those that have covered their trail with paperwork that does not belong to them. They may be the ones you open your plan for amnesty. Simply because their true stories need to be heard and that weak point can be closed forever. This last is more dangerous then the first. Because they climb faster to the top, because they have motivation to have the other around them. They know one another, secretly but known to many.
Illegal immigration is wrong. It is not something you give an ear to. The ear shoould have been the original visa process. In fact all our actions state we wanted to encourage the illegal immigration. Our fees, our abuse here, or sad eyes for the legal immigrant was never available to them ( yet we give it to the illegal). It is not right and anyone that thinks this way needs to be voted out of Office.

Roca, are you seriously playing the race card? That has been a huge problem with the Obama campaign. Quick reactionaries who scream RACISM! That is far more devisive than what even Republicans do. In case you didn’t notice, the Republican media played short clips all day for you all to scream racism before knowing all the facts and you all took that bait. I am black and spanish (Puerto Rican) and I cringe when people careless jump to that argument. You immediately place people who are not racists on the defensive and against you. I also teach in a Latino community, mostly Mexican and Mexican American. Those who were here during the Clinton era, have fond memories of those times…. They remember the right wing as being the attackers, the very right wing that is promoting your candidate….Just a couple of reasons why the Latino vote will go to Hillary!

EDNH, Get a clue my friend, i was hit last week by an illegal immigrant that had no driver’s license. Just to let you know my friend. If you would read up on your INSURANCE you would understand there is something called Undocumented Driver coverage its issued by all insurers to protect its members. This covers you from situations such as your presumed rhetoric. It happened to me and i didnt have to pay a thing. Try reading your insurance instead of spewing venom.

Posted by: FALSE INFO | February 2, 2008, 3:30 pm 3:30 pm

At first I didn’t agree with Obama on this issue, but after a little thought, I do. I am firmly against allowing illegal immigrants to flood into our country, they should have to wait behind people legally on lists, but if they are here, driving without a license or insurance guarantees there are more unqualified and uninsured drivers getting in accidents.
Personally, I think not allowing police to arrest illegals, (they are breaking the law by being here) doesn’t make sense. It shouldn’t just be INS’s job.
I’m glad Obama is firm on closing the border to illegals, and really fining employees large amounts for hiring illegals. That is what will really change the picture.
People, please don’t choose a candidate on one issue. Look over the big picture. Anything they want to do needs the support of Congress. Remember Obama (and Edwards) wants to end corporate influence on Congress and the presidency. Clinton takes large amounts of corporate dollars so she won’t be able to make big changes like he will. Obama is the best choice to get us out of Iraq, to get affordable health insurance, (read his plan on his website under issues)balance our trade deficit, reduce federal debt, etc.

Temporary Driver licences need to be given to all party’s coming into the USA for more then 30 days that wish to have drivers priviledges. Entering the USA without documents is illegal. Driving without a license or permission in the USA is against the law. Now, which part of this do we not fully understand.
A person must be identifiable, if not, he/she should be held until that identificaton can be properly determined. An individual found inside the USA without documents need to be deported immediately. If he deserves a chance to prove his status in court, then he will be held accountable for time in prison if it proves to be a lie. If he resists the order of the court; then he should do hard time. Bleeding hearts or not. It is wrong to allow entry without documentation. If false documents are used. Immediate deportation and cost need to be recovered from the Country of origin. Run a tab … World Court must allow seizing property belonging to that Country and sold for the expenses to be paid. STAND and Be Counted!

Are people not reading, they are not citizens of the USA, when they become a citizen, then they can have citizen rights. Title of our country United States of America, to get a license you should be a citizen of the United not just a State resident in America. At the time of citizenship they can do the legalities to be a good driver, one rule should be to speak English.

In any case, the posts here who represent Obama support, are the best repellents for more Obama support. I felt highly insulted by Obama supporters saying negative things about Hillary’s Latino support. Now Obama is kissing up to Latinos and you’re all jumping on that bandwagon. Too late!

Would getting a driver license also mean having to purchase insurance? Insurance is equally important to me. I came into this country from Britain, 44 years ago, the old-fashioned way, through Immigration and Naturalization Services and now a US citizen. Would have been much easier if I could have just toddled across the border from Canada!

Divers License for Illegals, Uzis for Felons, Cocaine for Druggies, Let’s make it all legal if they’ll vote for ya. Democrats will allow anything. In Texas they have enrolled thousands of illegals in voter registration and block requirements to prove you are a citizen. They take oaths to uphold the law of the land. But that is just another lie….

Obama is shamelessly using the issue of giving drivers license to illegal immigrants to gain latino vote.
He wants to reward people who broke this country’s law by entering illegally.

giving illegals drivers license is like giving a recurring DWI(driving while intoxicated ) theirs lices to drive. They shouldn’t be able to get them till they can prove they are legal citizens of the United States of America. Beign republican or democrate has nothing to do with it. I won’t vote for Obama I am voting for Hillary at least I havent felt insulted by her.

I don’t know about the rest of you living in places when there is a large immigrant population but in Miami they are driving without licenses and are causing hit and runs daily. Maybe if we have them get licenses, we can save a few American lives! Go Obama 08!!

Posted by: Bywill | February 2, 2008, 3:40 pm 3:40 pm

I am a Canadian citizen, and in our country, driving licence is not equal to citizenship. Whether you are a citizen, a permanent resident, a refugee claimant or whatsoever, you get your driving licence after passing the required road tests, and this driving licence is issued for public safety for all on roads and protection from potential accidents endangering people’s life and property, that is why all drivers need their driving licences to get the proper and mandatory car insurance.
Therefore , it would be idiot to think that issuing drivers licences to undocumented aliens is equivalent to giving them citizenship or recognizing their illegal situations in a country.
Thanks for understanding.

Another issue of the issueance, I believe but I’m not an attorney, there is such a thing as an international drivers license how about if the immigrants investigate this instead of our governments. It is great they want to join the USA but I am out a job. We have bigger fish to fry. The name/background of this candidate should concern this country. Sure he’s probably nice but where the Homeland Se curity?

Giving driver’s licenses to illegal aliens for votes, and I am sure if Obama needed votes from certain other illegal aliens who wanted pilot licenses he’d give them too to get elected!
It is incredible how gullible people are showing themselves in falling for this guy!
No one really knows his experience or lack thereof, yet they want him to run the country!
No one knows his track record, yet they want him to run the country!
No one knows his ties or the extent thereof his links to people through his bagman Rezko, yet they want him to run the country!
Some people defiantly place feel good speeches over researching who will have control over the lives of 300+ million people!
People want to elect a man who has extreme knowledge in Constitutional Law of the US and if you check into some of his exploits thus far, his shady deals and dirty money are all barely within the limits of the law! This is what he is an expert in doing!
This man’s links visa vie his bagman money and political fixer Rezko, who’s close friend is Mr. Auchi, an Iraqi Billionaire who has had ties to the Baath Party since the ’50s, made millions brokering weapons to Iraq in the ’90s and as well as being the largest shareholder of a bank that held personal accounts for Saddam!
Yet people believe a guy who simply says “I don’t know my chief financers connections, isn’t good enough for a rational thinking person!
Yet people want and trust this person to hold the highest office in the land not knowing whom this person is, aside from some feel good speeches!
Wake up America and look at the people behind the figure out there making you feel good with speeches! It is ridiculous that no one to date has demanded solid answers from this man that is ridiculous to say the least! Demand full and accurate transparency not poor rhetoric!
Be careful of what you wish for, and whom you chose to have the finger on the trigger of the most deadly arsenal weapons in the world!

I love it when these neocons resort to lying about Obama’s religion. They either get their information from emails forwarded about “Obama is a Muslim” which is patently false. They never look at their own side. Bush, the guy who Jesus told to invade Iraq. McCain – a 71 year old Bush clone who has said publicly that he will keep us in Iraq for “100 years.” And Romney who was being touted as a great money manager and who has thrown away $35,000,000 of his own money on a failed campaign. This gives us an idea of how he would spend OUR money. As far as religion goes, it is seperate from government as the Constitution (or what’s left of it after Bush) and makes no part of this election. If you want to argue invisible entities, ask Jesus and Muhammad to duke it out amongst themselves. Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama. That’s the way it’s gonna be whether the neo cons like it or not. Thank Mr. Bush.

It is disappointed to hear that some Latinos support Hillary Clinton. Look at the 1996 immigration law her husband passed, which pushed for more enforcement. As a Latina, I want a President that will fight for the rights of citizens and non-citizens in America. We don’t need someone who will only use our people to win. Do your research on Hillary and you will find a lot about her, including her stance on driver licenses for the undocumented which she is against.
Get a glimpse on what Hillary said… “Anybody who committed a crime in this country or in the country they came from has to be deported immediately, with no legal process. They are immediately gone,” Mrs. Clinton told a town hall meeting in Anderson, S.C., Thursday. On Wednesday, she told a crowd in North Bergen, N.J., that such criminals “absolutely” need to be deported. A day earlier, she told a rally in Salinas, Calif., that aliens with criminal records “should be deported, no questions asked.”…
“No legal process,” the New York senator said at a forum in Tipton, Iowa, according to a political news outlet, the Politico. “You put them on a plane to wherever they came from.”
I support Obama because I truly believe he will bring about CHANGE, and is a respected organizer

Posted by: A | February 2, 2008, 3:56 pm 3:56 pm

Hillary has laid out an actual plan. She is not throwing out little perks day by day to get any votes from any groups. Of course not everyone will be happy, but the course of reforming immigration needs to be humane and fair. Latinos know that Hillary will seek that path over any other.

Allowing illegals to attain a drivers license is a good idea. Each state can then identify people who are here illegally, test them to make sure they can drive competently and then collect revenue from them. Otherwise they drive illegally and don’t get identified. This encourages them to start abiding by the laws.
It will cost billions to kick everyone out resulting in increased taxes for the citizens. If you are illegal you should identify yourself and allow your self to get in line for a work visa. We need to loosen our work visa standards to allow them to come here and work and pay into the system. People just want to blame someone for their bad votes for Bush for the past 2 elections.

Irma,
You did have to pay something when that illegal immigrant hit you last week. Sure there is Undocumented Driver coverage, but you paid for that extra coverage in your insurance premium. Providing driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants will decrease the chances of people being hit by unlicensed/uninsured motorists, thus decreasing the amount auto insurance companies have to pay for repair and hospital costs. As a result, our auto insurance premiums won’t be as expensive.
You probably didn’t have to pay anything out of pocket because you have excellent auto insurance coverage (and probably pay a higher premium for that coverage than more basic plans). Some auto insurance plans don’t cover 100% of expenses incurred when an undocumented driver hits you.

“I see a lot of people yelling for peace but I have not heard of a plan
for peace. So, here’s one plan.”
1. The US will apologize to the world for our “interference” in their
affairs, past & present. You know, Hitler, Mussolini, Tojo, Noriega,
Milosovich and the rest of those good ol’ boys: We will never
“interfere” again.
2. We will withdraw our troops from all over the world, starting with
Germany, South Korea and the Philippines. They don’t want us there. We
would station troops at our borders. No one sneaking through holes in
the fence.
3. All illegal aliens have 90 days to get their affairs together and
leave. We’ll give them a free trip home. After 90 days the remainder
will be gathered up and deported immediately, regardless of who or where
they are. France would welcome them.
4. All future visitors will be thoroughly checked and limited to 90
days unless given a special permit. No one from a terrorist nation would
be allowed in. If you don’t like it there, change it yourself and don’t
hide here. Asylum would never be available to anyone. We don’t need any
more cab drivers or 7-11 cashiers.
5. No “students” over age 21. The older ones are the bombers. If they
don’t attend classes, they get a “D” (for “deport”) and it’s back home
baby.
6. The US will make a strong effort to become self-sufficient energy
wise. This will include developing non-polluting sources of energy but
will require a temporary drilling of oil in the Alaskan wilderness. The
caribou will have to cope for a while.
7. Offer Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countries $10 a barrel
for their oil. If they don’t like it, we go some place else. They can go
somewhere else to sell their production. (About a week of the wells
filling up the storage sites would be enough.)
8. If there is a famine or other natural catastrophe in the world, we
will not “interfere.” They can pray to Allah or whomever for seeds,
rain, cement or whatever they need. Besides, most of what we give them
is stolen or given to the Army. The people who need it most get very
little, if anything.
9. Ship the UN Headquarters to an isolated island some place. We don’t

Irma,
See what you think on this. You seem to be a soul in kind, with me :)
I want all of the Obamathon supporters to realize that I was impressed with his appearance, his calm, his great style. I will vote for him if he wins, no doubt about that.
I just believe that if you strip away the desire to apply even more golden clothes to the emperor, you cannot possibly compare ‘beliefs, hopes, dreams’ to fact, figures, dates, bills, and actual events.
But Obama is getting it both ways when he says ‘I would have never . . . ‘ or ‘I would have done that differently . . . ‘.
How does he know what he would have done? He is able to say what he would have done, without facing the consequences of his actionsand that’s weak at best.
In hindsight, and it seems in his general view of himself, he can remain 100% correct on all issues, in all discussions, involving anyone that steps up to the challenge, any place, any time, any how.
The point here is that he wasn’t elected to high office at the time of these momentous decisions, and when faced with supposed facts, from sources one would think could be trusted, he did not have to face the wrath of his choices.
And as a result he more than likely would have voted Present, anyway.
And as for experience, just what incredible levels of experience has Barrack obtained, and how did he come to this Rosetta stone of knowledge?
Ambassador somewhere? No. Secretary of anything? No. Department of Labor, Education, Defense, Environment . . . . No.
He has a whole 2.5 years in high office, as a Junior Senator who started running for President after the first year.
He was in the state senate for 8 years, and that has its involvements, not on a national scale of course, but still, there are decisions to be made. Unless you vote Present a hundred plus times. Then you don’t have to make ANY decisions now, do you?
But let us remember that to this day, Illinois is not some bastion of escape for the ills of America. It has problems. Vast, unaltered problems.
Chicago (check that ABC headline – I wrote this in another blog 4 hours earlier), Chicago is still run-down, old, polluted, filled with crime, poverty, traffic, drugs, guns, pornography (if you care about it, me, its your right to have it), prostitution, low wages, slum housing, communicable diseases, homelessness, lack of medical insurance, child abuse, rape, arson, and hunger.
I do not see any difference whatsoever in Chicago or Illinois in general, having had Obama in the state house for 8 years. The above problems were there before him. And they didn’t evaporate because of him.
The conditions that Mr. Obama found when he entered the state house, were the same conditions he left behind. But higher callings were, uh, calling.
So what, you say. So everything, I reply.
I do not believe that someone who hasn’t been in high office, let alone only lower state legislatures, has the fight, the experience, the know-how, or the qualifications, to be President Of The United States. They just simply cannot prove their abilities through actions.
If one has little to point to when presenting their evidence, they do not win the case. Unless your OJ Simpson.
But when the state that was left behind, for ego and ambition, is no better off today than it was before your arrival, that may be all the evidence that is required. It speaks volumes. And its speaks truthfully.
It is the deeds that you do not the words that you say.
He is a nice man, a well presented man.
He is very articulate. He is successful and professional. But he is vague, non-descript, imprecise, and deliberately convuluted.
He takes the high road because he can avoid contentious details that way. He votes ‘present’ on bills that require his decisions, even in the US Senate and explains them away with incorrect, if not misleading, excuses.
He doesn’t take a positionhimself but derides those who were brave enough to try and decide. Up or Down. Not ‘Maybe’.
But he is well versed and attractive. Savvy and inspiring.
But he is not prepared to lead because his habit of jumping positions before he has adequately completed the job he was elected to do in the first place shows weakness, ego, and pride.
And he cannot make a tough decision that might have consequences as evidenced by ‘Present’, ‘Present’, ‘Present’ . . . 130 times.
Ambition and a sense of right, like a royal mandate from God, though long dispensed with by Reason, drives the ego to reach for what one hasn’t yet proven their capacity to deal with.
One does not reward ambition with position, unless results prove the merits behind doing so.
There are no ‘merits’ found in Illinois that one can point to as a reason to entrust the defense and governance of the United States, to the purple prose and poetic rhetoric of a junior politician.
Google Illinois and take a peek: Crime rates, health rates, public housing conditions, wages, guns, disease, traffic, pollution, job rates, foreclosures, unemployment, literacy rates, homelessness rates, business failures, bankruptcies . . . there is nothing in Illinois very different than a lot of US states.
I know that momentous change is not accomplished by one’s self. It takes a village. And it can’t be done in just 8 years. But it can be started. It can be seen as a beginning. Unless of course, there is no start, and thus no beginning.
And when you promise the heavens and promise the earth, one can reasonably expect miracles from the miracle worker. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.
But there are no miracles to be found; no proof of real recovery. No example of corrected troubles that would cause the Nation to burst through Illinois’ borders, desperate to experience this new promised land.
It was promised, yes.
It just wasn’t delivered.

People can’t stand the honest soul that keep it real probably it’s politics or human nature we need to change our way of life period. All because obama made truth statement about immigration issues some group of fellow americans inside this room wanted to hang themselves over path to citizenship for folks been here working already that’s best way to handle the problem instead of thinking of deporting (12)millions out of america “INSANE”

What an IDIOT!
Isn’t there one candidate that is not a TRAITOR to the law-abiding American citizen? If you are not going to do anything about America’s porous borders expect apply band-aids, then take the money we are wasting on the Dept of Homeland Security and establish a workable legal immigration plan. If many peasant farmers can make their way into America without any resistance, don’t you think any terrorists (assuming there are actually any) would be streaming over here to cause destruction? Get real. This country is going to hell in a handbasket and none of the Presidential candidates today show any signs of reversing the slide.

>>>>before Obama (in a debate) is against giving illegals driver’s licenses now he is for it? A flip-flop.<<<
This is not true. If you read the transcript of the debate in which Sen. Clinton had such difficulty with the question (sorry I can't remember which debate that was by date) you'll see that Sen. Obama said quite clearly that he supported giving driver's licences to undocumented workers because he saw it as an issue of national security … which it is. In addition, as pointed out, it provides a great protection to other motorists (the uninsured motorist coverage is something *we* have to request and pay extra for and it's cost is based on the number of uninsured drivers and likelihood of a collision).
I commend him for taking — and not retreating from — a position that he (and others) feel is the best approach, even when he knows that it will subject him to violent criticism.

Posted by: Elizabeth | February 2, 2008, 4:29 pm 4:29 pm

Those people come here to work not to drive. Crack down on employers and there will be not illegals here, nor wages going down. But the Republicans will never do that, No!!! They’ve been so happy taking political contributions from these employers or pitting on side of low-income electorate against another for political gain. That’s why Mitt Romney has never complain when those illegals were working for him. Even Lou Dobbs, the demagogue-in-chief, i wonder why he has launched a campaign to close the borders instead of a campaign to crack down on employers or boycott products or services coming from these businesses?
Go Obama!!! I’ve been waiting for this may whole life, a politician who is asking us to think and who is calling for the best of us not the worse.
If there is no job here for these people they will not be there, that’s the bottom line.
Finally, i don’t see any pandering here, it would have been much more easier for him to denounce it.

I don’t have a problem with giving illegals driver’s licenses – as long as it is indicated on the license that the person has not been able to show proof of legal residency.

Posted by: genlin | February 2, 2008, 4:31 pm 4:31 pm

Requiring all non-citizens and citizens alike to have a valid driver’s license has been statically proven to increase more insured drivers and improved public safety on the roads. It is called accountability and taking ownership of managing a difficult problem. The driver license is just one database tool to track illegal activity and problems caused by illegal Immigration.
However, the root cause of illegal immigration is economic in nature and which is fueled by the U.S. government’s weak relationship to the government of Mexico and the rest of Latin America to address this very issue and associated root causes. Illegal immigration is a symptom of a greater problem.
Illegal immigration issue needs to be handled by emotional sober approach or the cost to the tax payer will be mis-managment with cost over-runs to fix the problem throughout the issue’s life cycle. (sound familiar… Iraq?)
There are those who want to rant and rave about this issue just raise the ire of people and offer no realistic plan how to pay for the cost of deportation at the expense of unproductive flag waving.
We need to move our country away from the subjective flag-waving nationalist linguists to the objective data-driven problem solvers and manager-leader realists, who can produce international results not parochial politics as usual.

Obama is doing anything to win–including illegal thing. Giving illegal immigrants driver’s license is illegal, it will be harmful to other citizens. But because the Latinos want it, and Obama wants Latinos’s votes, so he support it.
Is this Obama really honest and trustworthy to be a good presidnt?

If they cannot afford to buy insurance, will they stop driving? Of course not!!!!!!!! Obama is trying to get the Hispanic vote – it is so obvious! I can’t believe Hillary is not on this bandwagon.

If illegals immigrants are a threat to society because they are illegally driving…do we here a pattern forming in this sentence. Illegal, illegal, illegal. I am a born citizen and if i illegally drive i go to jail and lose my privelage. If they are illegally here-wrong, if they illegally drive-wrong so….jail them. They all ready broke law if they choose to drive-DEPORT
As for them providing ID, you can get id w/out driving privilages. It’s called a green card or just a state ID. If they truely do not belong here, DEPORT that simple.

Posted by: callenfallen | February 2, 2008, 4:49 pm 4:49 pm

How does one provide legal documentation and proof of identity, in order to obtain legal documentation, when one is illegal?
No valid birth certificate. No valide social security number.
How can you give a legal identification to an illegal person, unlawfully in the country? Wouldn’t they be subject to deportation upon such a request for a license? And if not, why not?
I know that when I was in England, and I had no National Insurance I.D. number yet, I had to prove who I was with my passport, what I was doing there, if I was employed, why, by whom, and how. If I failed to answer any of these questions right, my a$$ was an hour away from a deportation ride home.
Now can it be that hard?
The other question is, however, if Americans will not DO the jobs that some of these illegals are doing, then how do we staff those jobs once we spend 30 Billion dollars deporting all of these folks?
You cannot deport 12,000,000. America, if anything, is consistently in a state of panic, over their world image – al la Al Jazeera commercials from the U.S. and those folks still hate our guts.
We have to have a bit of heart though. We have to find people a way to exist but not a free ride. They are here, so now what. That is a product of a President who said he was going to tighten the ship, run America like a business, close those borders, and get Osama. All lies. And he knew they were lies, as he was saying them. No cigar or sperm on a dress will ever equate to this scumbag, no matter how hard to try or loud your little NeoCon voice box can scream.
So what to do with all the people. Too costly to chuck them out. Do you knock, door to door, business by business? That would take the Gestapo to do, and then many would slip through the cracks. And who the hell wants to be Nazis about this? Awful.
If we are too good, or lazy to do the low wage jobs some of these poor souls are doing, shoudln’t be let them? I mean AFTER the jobs are offered to the U.S. citizens, and we reject them as beneath our dignity to do, shouldn’t we let them have them then? Someone does have to do the work, and we damn sure know it ain’t the CEOs and their families that are going to go out into those fields and pick. Oh no, not them. Not the Waltons. Not the Bushes. Oh no. Some other trash has to do THAT style work, those folks are just too good to stoop that low. B4st4rds.
So let’s get these jobs situated. Let Americans work if they will, and if not, then let’s put these illegal folks in to do the job. fine them, make them pay taxes, put them at the end of the line, DEMAND WITHOUT EXCEPTION they learn to read, write, and UNDERSTAND the English language. Give them a pathway, but not a freebie.
And remember, if you can, like I can, what it was like to be destitute, desperate, tired, hunger, and scared. And to have America there, huge, and beautiful, and helpful, was like having God him/herself right beside you, holding your hand while keeping your head above water. We are that type of country. When we want to be.
:)

Yea, the heck with a plan, lets get sombody in the White House who has visions. People in psychiatric facilities have visions, as does extremists from other countries..
His Vision is color blind. He has self serving interests that do not include the health and welfare of the middle-lower economically challenged people in America. He is so beholding to so many that it will be hard to tell the difference between himself, the
“man with a vision” or the inexperienced flip flopping, pocket lining, criminal associating junior senator from Illinois with zero qualifications to be President other than the “O” factor.

Obama has no respect for our laws. That is why he will give illegal immigrants driver’s license. Obama has no respect for our laws that is why he used cocaine. Obama has no respect for our country that is why he would not say Pledge of Allegiance to our flag or will not wear a our flag on his lapel. All Obama cares about is filling his own pockets and if it be illegals, does he care, NO! I will not vote for him and my husband is American Colombian who’s parents came here the LEGAL way many years ago. They applied for citizenship just like my father did when he joined the United States Navy and came to America. And I am of mixed blood both German and Asian. Illegals have got to go back to their country and get in line to come over here. If they do not respect our laws, now. Will they ever respect them? NO! I can’t respect people who do not respect us and I do not feel sorry for them either. Mexico needs to take care of their own people!

to jon baker,
Crack down on employers, put huge fine on them and they will no longer hire illegals and drive wages down. That’s is the only solution, but you see the republicans can not go against their own special interests they rather use the issue for political football. I want a problem solver not a demagogue-in-chief. If an employer know that a chunk of his profit margin will go in lawsuits or fines for hiring illegal immigrants, they will think twice before hiring these folks.
The DL issue is a diversion, because they don’t want to solve the issue. We here in california have a real problem with all these folks driving without DL. If there is a real reform, we put money and resources in border controls, crack on shady employers and send the 12 millions back on the picket line to apply for a legal status, there will be no DL issue. These employers will be oblige to pay these folks the minimum wage, so there will be no unfair competition in the labor market.

Never should we give a driver’s license to an illegal alien. Driver’s licenses are treated too much like national identification cards for it to be safe for national security to issue them to anyone but those who are here legally.

Posted by: bigstick | February 2, 2008, 5:29 pm 5:29 pm

john,
I agree with you. In some ways the “fence ” is a kind of diversion also. There are 47 Mexican consulates in the US giving out Matricular consulate cards to illegals. This opens all kinds of doors for them. THE US governent allows this to happen on purpose. Hunter or Tancredo were our best hope- now they are gone. We have to push Romney to the right and keep him there. Otherwise, get used to the North american Union and say goodbye to Free Speech, the second Amendment, etc- basically America as we know it. We are near the end anyway. look for a powerful leader to emerge most likely from Europe soon who many will thik is a great man-he wil probably sign some great “peace treaty” in the middle East but he will be evil incarnate.

Posted by: jon baker | February 2, 2008, 5:29 pm 5:29 pm

Hillary said the right thing.
We need to resolve the immigration issue first before talking of driver’s license.
She also mentioned that the license ( remember the fact that it will be marked as one for illegal immigrant) will even expose the individuals to the cops as the cops will know that they are illegal and will tend to treat them shabbily.
The real case is to reform immigration and make the immigration process easier. There will be no need for any special license.

Posted by: TF | February 2, 2008, 5:32 pm 5:32 pm

America is beautiful and all sounds so sweet. Right now I will do the job of an immigrant b/c the jobs in US are getting scarce, I do believe the employer is responsible for putting immigrant to work. Paying to get them out of the country, how about how they arrived. Take them to the border and escort them across the line, not USA problem any longer. Did not invite them, not responsilbe. Love they neighbor but don’t let them take from you. The law stands and should be upheld for everybody, why treat these people different.

Posted by: callen | February 2, 2008, 5:37 pm 5:37 pm

I think this is a great tactical shell game by Obama. Granting illegals licenses will make it possible for U.S. Immigration to know exactly where to find illegal Aliens if the State and Federal government really wants to step up and deport them. This also makes businesses adhere to the law of not hiring illegals. To me this is not a win for illegals but actually a trap.

I am anti-ILLEGAL Immigration, Not anti-immigration. It seems that is a major point the libs seem to ignore. I wonder what other American laws the libs don’t really honor and support. The fact is and the fact ignored by the lib media is that the illegal aliens that have crawled across our borders at night and stolen an identy in order to fraudulently get a job are Felons. If Obama suports Felons, he should Absolutely Not be President or even a Senator as far as that goes. To TF,
Senator Clinton is playing politics and buying in to the mantra divide to conquer. She has changed four times her position on this issue. That’s say something about her character. I respect Senator Obama courage.
DL is a state issue and i don’t even know why it has been raise as an issue in a presidential election. Seven states are already giving DL to illegals notably New Mexico a state that i know, they have to do something for public safety on their roads because Washington politicians don’t have the courage to solve the issue by coming out with a real reform which is tough and fair. I want a candidate to tell me that he will put huge fine on employers who hire illegals and be serious about borders control. I want solutions and not diversion. I want someone who will not pit some categories of the population against others. How about talking about fairness in our economy, helping workers and the middle-class folks which are the backbone of our economy and this country.

Posted by: john | February 2, 2008, 5:53 pm 5:53 pm

Who cares whether or not non-citizens are issued driver’s licenses. You study the laws, you pass the driving test, you get insurance, you should be allowed to drive in this country What the government needs to do is step in and look at the companies hiring illegal immigrants and decide if there are Americans willing to work the same job. If there are U.S. citizens that do want to work the same job, they should get the job first, but if there are not then we need to fill those jobs with immigrants. The government needs to enforce the hiring of U.S. citizens when there are ones willing to do the job, and if none are willing then to government needs to legalize immigrants who will do the job.
As long as there is a DEMAND created by U.S. businesses for immigrant (i.e. cheap and hardworking) labor and as long as the government continues to neglect it’s responsibility to oversee immigrant hiring, immigrants, legal or not, will continue to pour uninhibited into this country. Deport illegal immigrants and more will just come across. Put up a fence, and they will dig under it or they will be shipped from overseas. Until you start addressing the demand for immigrant labor by regulating immigrant hiring over citizen hiring and cracking down on businesses who hire immigrants when a citizen is willing to do the job, immigrants will flow into this country uncontrollably.

What shocks me a little bit, is that a Mexican citizen with a Mexican driver-license is not allowed to drive in the U.S. I assume, we are talking about Mexican driver license holders. Are Americans allowed to drive in Mexico with their license ? So why not the other way round. Driving rules are international by the way. And Mexico is not a third world country, as some state here.

Let me understand this – you’re an illegal .. so you’ve broke one of our laws YET when you walk in to get a drivers license – it’s all good?? Everyone keeps saying cops support this, etc etc – I say b.s.! Just because you have a license doesn’t mean they’d have the means to pay should they cause an accident .. get real!!

For the Hispanics who are so loyal to Hillary why don’t she care if illegals get a driver’s license are not? could it be because she knows that Hispanics generally vote for white candidates any way? Obama is taking a stand on a issue that could hurt him in the general election, if he gets the nomination, simply because the majority of Americans are against the issue, including the Hispanic’s long time pal Hillary! Obama 08!

This move towards tolerance of illegals is simply another step to decriminalize illegal immigration and eventually to create a borderless America. It is not about public saftey. It the first step in a large multistage plan. There are larger forces at work here and, sadly, the average American is the one who will be hurt the most.

It’s so funny that some of you don’t understand Obama. You think politics is only tactics and lies, but not for Obama. He is on a different path. He says what he thinks is best for this country and he also won’t stick childishly to his opinion, if the situation changes, or he gets convinced by somebody else. Intelligent people do so, they change their mind, because they develop. Only stupid think, that their once tediously or shallow handcrafted opinion is true forever.

Obama is for SOLVING PROBLEMS – he sees the big picture. Small minded divisive people keep generating new problems & rehashing old ones. Let the man do his work! Get past tunnel vision so we can heal this nation and move forward! Obama is BRILLIANT! HONEST, FORTHRIGHT AND FOR THE PEOPLE.
Obama – the People’s President.
I sincerely hope he never has the chance to “DO HIS WORK”
Brilliant?
Oh yea, deceitfully so. Honest? Hardly. Forthright? Please, “I have no knowledge what my campaign manager is doing” When asked about Rezko’ contributions.

This is so sad, how the shape of our country is. I agree with some here, they need to go back to their country and do it right! I had to wait months and months for my husband to come here legally. And he had to wait months to get his SS Card and then drivers licence. This was done the legal way. We need someone that will look at the immigration issues and take a stand and quit talking about it. I understand Senator’s Obama’s stance on the drivers licence and it makes sense, and I am positive, that is just a small part of his overall immigration drafts. Don’t look at one little issues, study the bigger issues that are combined with these little issues. Side tracked, nope, conscious effort to protect the American people. yes.

Hillary Clinton, under fire about her commitment to civil rights for her race coding campaign, has lately been loudly proclaiming her fealty to the Democratic Party’s best traditions on human rights.
However, just two years ago, Hillary–the purported “expert” on international relations–said there should be “lawful authority” for torture in some cases.
Her stand was opposite to that of every other major Democratic presidential candidate in 2007-2008, and the heat she took for it caused her to make one of her famous “flip flops.”

Seems to be a link of sorts between economy and illegals. When the economy is booming the issue of illegals seems to take back stage. Or perhaps migrant workers are legal. Might be mixed up there. But when economy tanks, illegals are an issue. I cannot think of any unemployed Michigan residents making it out to California to work in the fields or in orchards. No, I am not in support of illegals – was around for the last amnesty. Texas has taken a lack of insurance approach rather than a driver license issue. No insurance then car can be impounded because it is a problem here. Quotes: “The State of Texas is implementing a new technology program that will allow law enforcement officers to immediately verify whether a person has car insurance. The days
of false proof of insurance cards or dropping coverage after receiving a valid insurance card are numbered! The new program is expected to be
operational in early 2008, only a few months away The goal is to reduce the
number of uninsured motorists in Texas,
estimated to be between 15-20% of all vehicles on the road. Soon, law enforcement officers and other state entities will have at their fingertips immediate, real-time access to insurance information on a given vehicle and/or driver.” Seems highly unlikely that illegals without a driver license will get insurance – so off with their car!

Oh, yeah, Oprahma is on a “path” all right. When people start “supporting” drivers licenses for illegal immigrants, it is too late for common sense; illegal immigrants are breaking the law but seem to have more rights and benefits in this country than legal citizens. I am fairly open minded and progressive, but this is nothing but pandering to the emotions of people that are sick of Bush and his ways. If Bushy had not done so much damage in the last 8 years, we would be cringing at most of what Oprahma has to say. If an illegal immigrant plows into my car; who will pay the damages? What if an illegal immigrant causes an accident and people are killed? Who do you suggest pay the damages, punitive and otherwise? My insurance company? Stick that idea in your hat. An illegal immigrant should not even be here to cause a car accident. More liberal baloney that will eventually do more damage than anyone thought possible. Fix or redesign the INS, that is the solution; no one suggests that idea. Dolts on the loose taking propaganda prone and ill informed voters done with them.

Hillary changed her position on this issue. Obama stated he was for this 2 months ago in a debate. So Irma, I don’t think he is pandering. He is being consistent.
What about Hillary. You don’t think the Republicans are going to go after her about the Clintons’ pardons,( some of which Hillary’s brothers asked for and got and she says she didn’t know anything about it), Denise Rich donating to the Clinton library in exchange for a Marc Rich pardon, Hillary’s campaign treasurer being indicted for failing to disclose contributons, Monica -gate, etc…
Now Bill Clinton is receiving donations from Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan billionaires. What do the Clintons owe them in return?
In the NYT article, it does say that Obama tried to fight the Exelon company even after it had contributed to his campaign. It was the Republicans who held up the bill.
It shows more that you can take money from someone and then oppose their interests.

New York realized what an idiot Spitzer was when he tried the drivers license thing in New York and he backed down after extreme public backlash (of couse now he want’s to tax illegal drug dealers – can you imagine putting that on your 1040?). Our courageous clerk’s at the DMV stood up to him and vowed to issue the drivers licenses, but do their duty and report them as illegals right away. All people want is for immigrants to come here legally, wait your turn, do it right, follow our laws – that’s all we ask. My ancestors were immigrants, and I know many legal immigrants. Much of what we are today is due largely to the hard work and dreams of immigrants. Its not immigrants we don’t want, its the Illegals that flaunt their disrespect for our laws and systems. Systems and laws that you or I, and even legal immigrants, have to abide by every day, systems that many people over the years have had to follow and now can pursue the American dream (whatever that may be for you). I dislike and distrust Obama. His anger underneath his false smile and lack of class in the Hillary snuff sealed it for me. I predict Obama’s support for driver licenses for illegals will ruin his bid for the House. He won’t get my vote and that of as many other people as I can talk sense into.

Obama – this shows your not ready for position of responsibility, much less president, by rewarding criminals. The idea of giving a drivers license to illegals is wrong. They are here illegally and should be delt with based on the laws of our country. Illegals broke the law when they illegally entered our country. If someone broke into your home – what would you do, if your Obama, you would reward them with a drivers license. Obama the defination of illegal is “forbidden by law or statute” Do you know how many of these illegals could be mideast terrorists or criminals and a drivers license would help them greatly. NOBAMA in ’08

This is a cynical attempt to grab the Latino vote. If the Federal government had gotten its act together with regards illegal immigration, then states like New York and California would not have to deal with illegal immigrants driving on the road and proposing to give them drivers licenses.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service – now U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services – is no longer part of the Department of Justice after previously been moved around a number of times. It has been moved to the Department of Homeland Security in March 2003 in the current Administration’s restructuring to provide better security. And, I am not going to even touch that one – just the facts.

“Illegals” of any kind (Hispanics, Canadians, Germans, etc) should not get U.S. driver’s licenses. It is a contradiction to want to give them driver’s licenses, then turn around and want to deport them.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I am tired of my tax dollars paying for services for everyone else in the world and not for the CITIZENS in the United States. I believe in charity, but charity begins at home. There are illegal immigrants that are able to get health care and assistance that tax paying citizens cannot get. And I am not talking about the lazy people who choose to live off the government. That is another issue. I am talking about hard working American citizens that have put their blood, sweat and tears into building this country.
I also have many friends that have moved to the United States legally and have become American citizens. These people feel as though they are being slapped in the face by their country. They went through the process legally and take great pride in being American citizens. They do not wave the flag of their home country. They wave the flag of the United States of America. They speak English and they are hard working tax paying citizens.

Everyone running for office can make all the promises they want to get votes, but it takes the vote of Congress to change the laws. I doubt Congress will allow illegal immigrants to obtain drivers license. If they do, I hope it is used as a tool to arrest and deport illegal immigrants.

As seen on CBS News just moments ago, Obama is stumping in Idaho today, he felt the need to clarify his religion. He stated, “I have been going to church for twenty years and praying to Jesus.
I would have asked in response to his statement, “Where were you worshiping the other twenty five years”?
Still seems to be a nagging thought on many voters minds. Rightfully so….

That thinking obviously is still alive and well, and (2) Voted to fund the war. The statistics are: The majority of Hillary’s voters were the non-elites, and the blue-collar workers. And just about all Iowans are well off. Statistics show Hillary won THROUGH the non-rich, and non-elites. Obama’s campaign is being dishonest AGAIN in implying he represents the common American. Besides the elites, there are the rest of us. Hillary WON through this. These facts are in news reports, analyses of how she won states, pictures of Obama’s crowds of supporters and other places. Then Obama’s fundamental contradiction which perhaps sums it all up is: “The freest of all passes to Obama is the general neglect of the obvious central contradiction of his candidacy — the bipartisan uniter who would bring us together by transcending ideology; is at every turn on every policy an unwavering, down-the-line, unreconstructed, uninteresting, liberal Democrat(!)

Bush’s and Regan were Republicans.
Truman was a Democrat, and a damn fine president. He expanded Social Security, He implemented the “Fair Employment Practices Act”, He was responsible for Fair Public Housing as we know it today.
In 1948 when the Soviet Union blocked off the western sectors of Berlin, he sent a massive airlift to Germany and the Russians backed away.He crafted the North Atlantic Treaty Orginization (NATO) in 49. He was known for being the peoples President. He put a descisive end to the War in Japan.
He issued executive orders to begin desegegation in the military in the late 40′s, long before MLK was doing his part to advance the cause of Civil Rights. He greatly boosted the economy after WW2. You can’t really believe he was a Capitalist??
He was widely known and dubbed “The Fair Deal”

Obama voting to fund the war is not same as voting for the war. Are you suggesting that American soldiers should be left to suffer because some people made the wrong decision. That is what we call a reasonable man who would can differentiate between supporting what is wrong and encouraging what is right towards a common purpose. If you do not sympathise or support soldiers out their for your sake then you are not worth being American. Obama supported the survival of of American soldiers in a wrongly misinformed reasons to send them to Iraq because of his high sense of patriotism.

Democrats could have stopped the war a long time ago, if they would have just stopped funding it. They were scared to do that because they knew republicans would make them look as if they were abandoning the troops. It is a game. Politics at it’s best. If Obama was against the war, he would not keep funding it. Our soldiers wouldn’t die, they would just have to come home, but he and the rest of the democrats don’t want that tag around their necks. The same thing happened in 2003, a lot of dems voted for the war, because they didn’t want to appear soft on terrorism. Obama was sitting in Illinois, with out a real burdon, so he could say whatever he felt and had no cosequences for it. When he becomes a senator, he plays the same politics that they all play. He also voted for the patiot act.

To some of you,
It is about public safety. Even if they don’t buy car insurance. Our law enforcement administration can still track them if they are involved in a crime or an accident. Why? because we have them on record. That’s why the majority of law enforcement unions are for this measure. Any way if there was a real reform and a real crack down on shady employers there will no DL for illegals issue at all.
Way to go Senator Obama!!!
Finally a problem solver and someone who has the guts to tell the truth.
Senator Clinton has taken four positions on this issue, something is telling me that if polls move in a different direction, she’ll move to her fifth.

How do you correlate a so called study of non-citizens and citizens being safer drivers if they get a license versus illegal aliens being safer drivers if you let them have a license? I am assuming that by non-citizen that people are referring to legal immigrants. The people that are here legally have something to lose if they do not follow the laws. The illegal aliens that people are referring to really do not have much to lose and not much money to pay for insurance to begin with.
It still confuses me that people want to give a legal identification and a privilege to someone that is illegally here. To me it seems that the easier you make it for people to come to the U.S. and live here illegally, the more people people will be attracted to come here illegally. It is just another magnet to go along with easy entry, free medical (just go to the ER), easy access to work etc…
Either way the illegal immigrant problem will eventually go away. Either we will never stem the flow and the standard of living gets low enough not to attract the illegal immigrants anymore. Or we wise up and control our borders and crack down on employers for hiring illegals. I am not against legal immigration, but name me one country that is very prosperous and does not attempt to control the people allowed to immigrate?

Posted by: Gscrib | February 2, 2008, 8:19 pm 8:19 pm

Obama is absolutely right. Protecting our borders is the correct thing to do. Driver licenses for illegals is just a red herring by the Republicans. It gives them the excuse to show their red necks, and red faces, and wave their flags around. yet, by the numbers, except for Mccain, none of them have served in the military. They will be the first to show their cowadly, and fearmongering attributes.

Obama represent love beyond division. This what strikes me. A lot of people have assiociated him to the anti-christ, yet he shares the same vision with christ, love your your folks as your self. Some say he is muslim and I say what is worng with being muslim even though he is not but his father was, blacks say he is not black enough but I would say that is racism in it self, whites say he is not white enough but I would say that in itself is descrimination.
The world says this is what American needs to repair its image; sell love to the world but those that benefit from chaos are putting in their best to tear him down. 21st century is the century of love. We have waited long enough for old folks to bring about change but can’t .The younger generation are ready to take their destiny into their own hands starting from America and the wave of change will flow across the world. Yes we can. The world needs love not dirty politics.

Rose Walker: I have to commend you for posting a very intelligent response amongst the rabble. You typed the words right out of my fingers. Does it actually ever bother you, knowing that there are so many uninformed, biased, crude and, oh heck, just plain dumb, individuals who actually have the privilege of participating in the decision of electing the leader of this great nation. The only item I was going to add to your post, was addressed by another, farther down the page, regarding uninsured motorist insurance. Sure, we have that option of purchasing this coverage to cover against damage created by the uninsured. But, my reply to that poster is; did it ever occur to you, that you may not have to incur this additional expense, if every driver had a license and their own insurance. Of course most of us realize, just because a driver has a license doesn’t necessarily mean he or she is insured, but, if illegal immigrants had the privilege of being licensed, I think more would purchase insurance than not. The solution being offered by legislation in the co-sponsored bill by Senator’s Obama and McCain, and supported by Hillary Clinton, may not be the best solution, but it is a solution none the less and one more than anyone else has offered up in Congress. I have proposed one change in Senator Obama’s legislation and have submitted it to his campaign for review. I recently received a return e-mail thanking me for my input and informing me that my proposal is a viable option and is being studied by their staff. I submitted the proposal to the Clinton campaign the same day, and have yet received a response of any nature.

How many more people were deported than under Clinton admin. It is not really worth it to them to stop illegal immagration, because their paymaster are the ones who really benifit from Illegal immagration. They talk alot about it, blame illegals for everything for taking jobs of hard working americans, but it is the companies that hire illegals who are to blame.
If it was not for illegal immigration then they would have to pay more for their big houses, more for their fruits and veg, more for having their lawns and gardens lookings as they do. Do I need to give any more examples.
You have the most conservative president sitting in the WH. What has he done to stop the flow of illegal immigration? All the GOP want to do is to keep it a political issue because it panders to their rank and file, who (the sheep they are) swallow all that garbage hole and vote to keep them in office.
All you who have post here saying you are against what Barak Obama is proposing. How many of you have bought a new house in the last 15 years. Illegal immigration has saved you 15 to 50k on your house add in intrest on 30 mortgage and it doubles the amount of money that it has saved you.

To Bret,
There is only two politicians in this election that i respect and who will stand for what they believe is right even if it means they’ll loose some votes. They are Senator Obama and Senator Mc Cain. I will vote for either one of these two, i have not made my choice yet and i hope that we will have them both in the general election. We ended up in a misguided war because it was supported by 70% of the population and there were few politicians who have the courage to stand for what was right even if it means being on the wrong side of the polls. It is a testimony to the character of these two men, that what you call leadership. Yes Mc Cain vote for the war, but he has shown courage on this immigration issue and i respect him for that.

That is the beauty of the 2008 race; looking beyond our political inclination and being open minded to the truth. Not twisting it to suit selfish ends. The world needs truth. If you think any other candidate may well represent your interest, do encourage them to at least be truthful about most things because truth deginifies a man. I love Obama beyond his political standing. He represents love and he is willing to sacrifice himself to a nation that he believes in. Some say he has no experience in politics but I tell you, that is what has helped his sense of judgement of what should be done right.
Experience some times translates to following the ways of the pundits. The world is tired of sick belly twitching liars that call themsleves politicians. Leaders should be able to inspire some thing in you to believe.
America deserve your patriotism, your children deserve the right to be listened to. Most of us in this blog know where their kids stand on this issue but are not willing to face thr truth or tell their children that they can believe again in the American dream

Gscrib ,
Why do they come here? They come here to work not to drive. So how do we prevent them to come here by cutting their access to these jobs. The best way is to impose severe penalties on faulty employers and even send them to jail if it is necessary. For the rest we should enforce the control of your borders, it is our national security interest to control our borders and ports, not only the Mexican border but also the Canadian border. But some politicians want to keep getting political contributions from employers and playing football with this issue to get votes. A.K.A Mitt Romney who has no problem with illegals when they work in his lawn.
This country that we love dearly deserves better and I pray that it will Mc Cain VS Obama

To the comment about us buying a new house in the last 15 years..we can’t afford a new house, nor can 1000′s of there people are in forcloseer. What has Obama done about that..he ownes a million dollars plus house in Chicago, courtsey of Tony Rezko. We lived on the coast, went thru 3 hurricanes, many illegals aliens came in some to work, some to sell drugs, many belong to gangs, there are many gangs of illegal aliens in New Orleans. Many illegals aliens are picked up on our highways transporting drugs by the ton. Many of the illegal aliens are the dregs of society and Mexico are glad to see them lead, many of them are sent to the U.S. by the Mexican Drug lords….what has Obama done about that issue…nothing, nada, zippo..etc….As the police, the border patrol about the illegla aliens and there drug problems…take a ride with the police in some of the drug areas and you will have your brain and eyes opened…and not in a good way..Wake up America, Obama talks the talk but he ain’t walked the walk…he’s just another suit, smooth talking, but little substance except talk. Talk don’t pay the bills, unless your are a do nothing politican.

It is clear that Obama has no idea what he will face if he makes it to the general election. He thinks he can brush off his voting record, which being the most liberal in the Senate, demonstrates that he has simply locked his rudder to the party line rather than forging a new, post-partisan course. He does not use a substantive approach to deflect the criticism; rather, he tries to flick it away with a quip –”last week I was a follower of Ronald Reagan.” Nice try….
Certainly, I did not construe Obama’s remarks on Reagan to indicate that he was a follower. Instead, his remarks about Reagan being a transformative leader and the Republican party being “the party ideas” over the last 10 to 15 years were nothing more than transparent and short-sighted effort to build his own post-partisan cred. One that will now be used against him and the Democratic party. His assertion was wrong–Republicans were more the paqrty of obstruction than ideas over the last 10-15 years. The ideas that they did have were mostly bad, but the point is that by regurgiting the drivel that Republicans were the party of ideas, Obama implicitly concedes that Democrats were not offering ideas over the last 10-15 years. How are we going to feel when this crap is thrown back in our face in the general? Did he check with Ted Kennedy on this? How about John Kerry? You get my point….
Vote Hillary. She knows exactly what the general will look like and she has what it takes to win.

To Carolyn Walker,
No one is shoving it down your throat. It is alreading in application in seven states, it is a state issue and it is use in a presidential election by pundits for ratings and by politicians who have no real ideas or vision to solve the economic crisis that this country is facing.
This country needs problem solvers, not demagogue-in-chief. We have a problem with illegal immigration. How do we solve it?
We need a realist plan and we need to look at the problem by leaving our emotions aside. It will not be solve by lou Dobbs ranting in his shows or by Mitt Romney demagoguery.
Again, it is a state issue and no president will have to deal with a DL issue, but a president will have to deal with the immigration issue and our homeland security. What are the candidates plans on these issues and what are the chances that these plans can be implemented.
Those who are losing now are working class folks, not Mitt Romney friends who can still take advantage from cheap labor and drive wages down.

One thing Obama can do is work with the Republicans to bring about change. One thing Hillary would do is entrench the Republican base. If Hillary wins, we will be as polarized and divided as we are today if not more so.
The Republicans know illegal immigration must be addressed, know securing our borders must be addressed, and health care has to be addressed. Many of them are as unhappy with the current state of affairs as we voters. Obama can work with the Republican base to bring about change…Hillary will never be able to do that.
I’m an independent (always voted Republican in the past) and I will vote, volunteer and do anything I can to help Obama win. I made my first ever political donation to his campaign. I will do whatever it takes to help Obama win.
I would work harder to defeat Hillary.

ABC/Oprah are focusing on this topic so Obama can get more Latino votes come Super Tuesday. If the Latino voters think that Obama will give driver licenses to their illegal families than they will vote for Obama in the primary. ABC did not the push this issue month ago when Obama clearly stated his position on illegal immigrants during a debate in November. And, Obama continued to tell African-American that we need to accept illegal immigrants in most of his speeches, listen to his MLK speech. ABC is not trying to help anyone but Obama. Obama needs the Latino voters.
Remember during the one the debates when Hillary said that she understood why the Governor of New York supports driver licenses to illegal immigrants but she DOES NOT support it, the media ate her alive the next several days after the debate, which cause her to drop in the poll. But when Obama was asked the same question (twice) in the next debate, he said “YES” (twice) that he supports granting driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. The media did not go after him on the topic as they did Hillary.
Below are comments from Obama during the debate on illegal immigrants.
Obama: Undocumented workers come here to work, not to drive
Obama: When I was a state senator in Illinois, I voted to require that illegal aliens get trained, get a license, get insurance to protect public safety. That was my intention. The problem we have here is not driver’s licenses. Undocumented workers do not come here to drive.
They’re here to work. Instead of being distracting by what has now become a wedge issue, let’s focus on actually solving the problem that this administration, the Bush administration, had done nothing about it.

A note to the wise. Illegal immigration will not stop. No matter how high you build those walls and fences. No matter how many laws is put into force, you cannot stop the tide.
It is human nature to seek a better life, than the one they are living. As long as people are suffering in other nations they will seek ways to enter another nation where they can have a better life.
That is why the pilgrims left Plymouth. They did not apply to the native americans living here for a entry visa.
Europeans came here, saw that it offered a better life than Europe and wipe out most of the native population to achieve it.
The most ruthless empire the world have ever known(the Romans) could not stop illegal immigration. The higher the wall you put up to stop people the more envy in others you make, thus they will find news ways to come to the USA. If the human brain can invent away to travel to the moon, then finding ways around terrestial barriers is not much of a problem

Right, so give potential terrorists a valid driver’s license. After they are illegal, right? Does BO have any clue what the ramifications of this are for the security of this Nation? Being of woman of color, I listen to a lot of black talk radio hosts such as Warren Ballentine, Michael Basiden, etc. Prior to the success of Obama, for many months, we have been preached to about the many problems African Americans faces as related to illegal immigrants and the new world order. There have been many heated debates about illegal immigrants and how we as African Americans must not allow illegal immigrants to receive a free pass and most of driver licenses. Now we are being told by many talk radio hosts that we need to support Obama no matter what. One of the reasons given: 1) if Obama wins, the image for a black man will be elevated in the eye of the world and white people will start treating our black men better. This great but what about our future. My concern is many young African Americans are not looking at the issues but marching the beats of these talk radio hosts that are looking the opportunity to getting a free ticket to the White House. What happen to our conservative black democrat? How can I explain to my families any free passes that are given illegal immigrants? All of my families and friends are following all the rules, paying required fee, and still waiting in line (over 3 years) for their chance to come the US. We have always side against illegal immigration but highly support and embrace legal immigration.

Posted by: voteforme008 | February 2, 2008, 10:13 pm 10:13 pm

Voteforme008,
Illegal immigration is a side issue. That is not the cause of the many probems that african americans face. Those problems are rooted in the pass,
and have yet to be truely face up to by the wider population. Education, self-esteem, housing, poverty. The list goes on, illegal immigration taking jobs away from them is BS. Illegal immigrants are hired by crooks who do not want to pay a living wage. Would you want to work for one of those people. Also illegal immigration has no effect on legal immigration. The waiting time only if they were to be given legal status would that effect the quoter in the country they come from.

To VoteforMe008: You are without a doubt the best writer on here. If Obama were elected there is a good chance that the backlash against the black community could be severe. Everytime Obama said or did something it would be viewed in a racial tone….I don’t agree with that, but I also know it to be true.
Obama has lots of faults and I have pointed out probably every one of them. I do not hesitate to say that ALL the other candidates have plenty of faults also. But, the first black american president will have to be almost perfect and that is not fair but it is the real world we live in. Congressman Gray from few years ago, or maybe Colin Powell come to mind. A person such as Barrack Obama with lots of questionable muslim friends, a radical church, and frankly a weak public record is not the guy. Take care………..

Tennessee..great comments.
The idea that we can actually deport 15 million people is nonsense. I am a logistics expert, so lets examine this. We need to locate throughout the entire US, then arrest, then house, feed, provide medical care, a deportation hearing, and then transport lets say 100,000 illegal aliens per month, for say 15 years straight. Of course we have all their goods, cars houses and stuff to deal with, we have the children of who many are legal US citizens. Heck, we could not evacuate 400,000 people with a weeks notice in New Orleans but you think we can do the above………..never, ever. Now, so what do we do? We close the border and we assimilate those already here….I know many of you don’t like that, but there is NO other options, so quit whining about it.

Are American Taxpayers finally getting tired of spending 3 Billion Dollars a week to provide free benefits to illegal immigrants, who shouldn’t even be in our country???
Are American Taxpayers finally getting tired of spending 4 Billion Dollars a week in Iraq???
Are American Taxpayers finally getting tired of supporting the military industrial complex, to the tune of almost 10 billion dollars a week???

I am part of a truly multi-racial family. White, Black, Latina, Asian even an Aussie. We all have different jobs and different incomes. We have found Sen Obama to be the most racist of the candidates. We have watched as he has slowly ticked off each minority and including females. My Latina s-i-law actually called it that Obama would bring up licenses after Richardson dropped out and he realised he lost the Latinas in Nevada. We thought about turning it into a game a bit of who will Obama love next. I dont mind him in fact we thought we would love him but he is offering us the world but not saying how and not saying what he won’t deliver. My mother says he is like a parent who wants his children to love him so he decides to give them everything they want even if its not good for them and he can’t afford to buy it. The sort of parent who has an excuse for everything but is never responsible. I am a victim of circumstance. She told us to stand up straight and take responsibility and that it was up to us if skin colour was a problem in our lives. I actually feel sorry for Sen Clinton because I can guarantee you the things she is being condemned for people wouldn’t have paid attention to if she wasn’t running against a black man. Our white relatives are divided and they are a mix of normal, politically correct a few feminists and a few closet racists. 90% of black relatives are pro Obama and most of them haven’t voted before. I asked why know they said “i want a brother in the house” I asked about his stance on several issues they didn’t know one. The Latina branch was the most interesting they are the most suspicious and I think a few would call themselves Republicans. They are probably 70/30 Clinton but they know the issues. One thing we all know is race is an issue and Obama is playing it up big take it from us.

Posted by: How come | February 3, 2008, 1:38 am 1:38 am

Tennesse,
You did allude to people being racist.
How are people supposed to not pay attention to Mexico and other South American Countries when the vast majority of the illegal immigrants are from Mexico. We do get illegal immigrants from lots of other countries, but they are all a pretty small potatoes when compared to Mexico and other Central and South American countries. We should treat all illegals the same. But, usually you do focus on the biggest problem first. You would have a valid point if the majority of illegal immigrants were from England and people still concentrated on Mexico. But, trying to infer that because people focus on the out of control illegal immigration from the South that there are other nefarious reasons for their anti illegal immigrant stance is unfounded.
With our slow impotent government, deporting all illegal immigrants is probably not feasible unless the laws are changed or the process is expedited. That does not mean we need to give citizenship to illegal immigrants. The amnesty of 1986 only exasperated the illegal immigration problem. We should crack down on employers with huge fines and implement a mandatory employee verification system. Once the jobs start drying up, the numbers of illegal immigrants trying to enter should drop drastically. This would allow easier patrolling and monitoring of our borders to catch drug smugglers, terrorist and other more serious criminals. Arizona recently passed a law against employing illegal immigrants. It has been reported that illegal immigrants were starting to leave Arizona even before the law went into affect.
That’s it for now…I am getting tired.

Posted by: GScrib | February 3, 2008, 1:44 am 1:44 am

Buzzm1 keep believing that whilst reapping the reward for illegal immigration. Your house for instance if you have bought a new one in the last 15 years, or the money you save on groceries. Don’t go after all of them just one at a time so you can enjoy the fruits of the illegal labor of those already here. Keep believing the hype that illegals can obtain benefits. They risk death to come to the us, many have died. Has that stop the flow, NO. You may or may not play the lottery, but they play it with their lives everyday.
The only real way to stop illegal immagigration is to help those countries south of the boarder to better supprt their own people. Stop Washington from supporting corrupt politians in those countries. Give a lead show them that they too can acheive a good life in their own land. Not risk death and suffering to come to the USA

Illegals are criminals. Allowing them drivers licenses is the exact equivalent of passing out prizes to successful burglars.

Posted by: SJackson | February 3, 2008, 2:00 am 2:00 am

Uhm okay La Opinion endorses Obama because of his position on drivers licenses for undocumented residents? So this is the definitive issue for Latino voters? Of course not! Latinos, including those of undocumented status, care about important issues like every other person such as, the economy (yes undocumented people are losing their jobs too, etc), the war on terror, so on and so fourth. Guess what people, if need be people will drive without a driver’s license no matter what, shocking isn’t it. If this is your pitch to get Latino voters, I’m a little disappointed. How did you get the support of Latino voters in Chicago, a city that boasts one of the largest Latino populations in the U.S? In addition, as a child of an immigrant this is all you can do to appeal to a population with a large immigrant population? If this isn’t a red flag I don’t know what is.

B
Some exit/entrance polls are available on CNN and Fox websites. By and large the majority of voters so far for both Hillary and Obama are close to a tie in percentage wise for different income brackets. Both had instances where they had the highest percentages in the lowest income catergory. Overall Hillarys supporters were close to an even spread over each income bracket.I know this does not necessarily mandate someones education but I was working with what I had as only one had an education breakdown. This was also even except for postgrad which gave an edge to Obama but was less than 4% of voters. What is interesting is the breakdown of votes according to race. I don’t know why but asking this question shocked me. It is as if it somehow encourages racisim as an issue in this election. The results for this were quite telling. The black vote for Obama was overwhelming in near on every instance at least 70+% in every case. (usually 80%) To keep it balanced black voters were on average about 15% of voters. Yet he still had almost the black vote. Demographically over 70% of all democrat voters are considered working or middle class. 20% deemed poor or disadvantaged. The balance comprising upper & upper middle classes. Obama posted good numbers in the poor/disadvantaged bracket. So I guess it is ignorant not to do your own research and see that Obama more than holds his own with the “Uneducated”. Poor education does not automatically equal ignorance. Just as success does not eliminate corruption and greed. It is not a crime in America to be poorly educate or poor.Everybody counts everybody gets a vote. So I say to to you how dare you misrepresent what this country stands for to push your OWN agenda.
“one Nation under God, indivisible,
With Liberty and Justice for all.”
“With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”
“Land of the brave, home of the free”

Someone please help me understand current laws in this country. It is illegal to…cross any border illegaly, hire illegal immigrants but, we can allow them a drivers liscense, pay them S/S, give them welfare benefits, while we look the other way at their citizenship status? If they are here illegally why do they not deserve anything but, deportation. We need to have a national law requiring birth certificates for a drivers liscense. At least Hillary is against illegal’s having liscence’s to drive. I am not sorry one bit about my opinion on anyone here illegally, when so many are trying to come here legally. Last I knew, we were a nation founded in law. How does Mexamerica sound?

Hillary Clinton supported giving Drivers Licenses to Illegals until about a month. Trust the Clintons, they will do anything to win. The truth is that this position – giving DL to illegals, is not a popular position with electorate – but it shows you what kind of leader Obama is.. Not the “do anything, say anything to win politician”. It is a public safety issue. Whether we like it or not, these guys are here – 13 million of them and deporting all of them is not a realistic option, though it is a populist option that will get a politician votes, it is not pratical.

Posted by: Jimmy | February 3, 2008, 9:53 am 9:53 am

How in the world do you think you will stop illegal immgration by continuing to give incentives to illegals? We got into this mess by having a derelict gov’t not enforcing the laws. We were told that Simson-Mizzoli (the 1986 amnesty given to 3 milllion + illegals)would solve the problem. They lied to us. We went from 3 million to 12 million. Our gov’t is a fraud. How do you get 12-20 million illegals and still believe you have a responsible gov’t? Wake up. Be an adult. How do YOU still fool yourself and believe YOU have the Rule of Law with 12-20 million illegals? WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! America is on a fast path to anarchy.

There is no doubt that one of the first things our next President needs to be do is to secure our borders. There is campaign rhetoric, and there is reality when you get into office. We have the Conservatives in office right now, why have they not put all the illegals on a plane and deported them, because it is not practical. We need to seal our borders, both on the northern and southern fronts, but it is unrealistic to deport all the illegals here right now. There are no good pratical options, so you either go with politicians who tell you what you want to hear, or who tell you the truth. God bless our country

I pointed out that as far as exit/entrance polls were concerned the most telling statistic was race not education/income.It is apparent that race is a huge issue in this primary and B and others (not all) cannot acknowledge it as they feel it defames their candidate they seem to prefer to call Hillary supporters ignorant uneducated gullible etc. It is the media supported by the public that are discrediting the candidates. It may not be right but it is real. Also I was then questioning why someone is unqualified to vote based on their education. Just because someone may not understand the finer points of something does not mean they do not understand what effects them. You may not agree with them but again this is their right. How do people say they support a man who advocates a change for a better tomorrow and unity yet want to exclude those who have different likes. What I truly think is appalling is somewhere like Michigan has over 7 million registered voters and approx 1.5 miilion cared to vote and so the story repeats itself across the states. Yet day after day everywhere you go people will tell you what is wrong with government or candidates. I will not hate monger a candidate but I will exercise my right to address selective facts or misinformation presented as facts. I have defended Obama also regarding such comments.

Obama’s position is clear. He has said that illegal aliens should be allowed to get drivers license AFTER they have been registered and are on the path to citizen ship.
I’m in Miami, one of the capitols of illegal immigrants in this country. One of the biggest problems we have here is illegal immigrants driving without insurance and a license.
The reality here is that not having a drivers license DOES NOT deter illegal immigrants here from buying a car and driving.
Obama’s forward thinking will help address this problem.
* If they are registered, they are no longer considered undocumented and we can keep a more accurate count of immigrants because we would have their name and contact information.
* To get a drivers license, they would have to learn our driving rules and pass the test. That will contribute to safer driver practices
* If they are registered and have a drivers license, they won’t be driving with as much fear
The bottom line is that illegal immigrants don’t come to this country to drive … they come here to work. Most illegal immigrants are good, hardworking people who come here to better their lives and live the american dream.
If they have to get across town or go somewhere, do we really expect that they are going to walk, ride a bike or take the bus?
Illegal immigrants are going to drive whether they have a drivers license or not. If we are smart we will take advantage of that.
On this issue, Obama has shown that he better understands the reality of the situation.

The truth is Hillary changed her position on giving Illegals Drivers License about 2 weeks ago, she had been in support for it before then. This is classic Clinton, Say anything, Do Anything to get elected. Friends, Reject the Clinton Dynasty. We have 350 million people in this country, why should we continue to be ruled by 2 families? Returning Bill to the White House will send a message to our kids that honesty, integrity and morals do not matter. Reject the Clintons and their baggage. America deserves better.

life according to the Obama HYPERS. Bringing the youth and other radicals out to vote will win me the election. Since the media has given you a TEFLON coating to say and do whatever you want, coupled with the fact the Clintons arent ALLOWED to critique you because Ted Kennedy and John Kerry WHINE , Obama thinks hes got this big MOVEMENT going.
Except we have gone down this path before. Youth voters NEVER determine the election, and Obama is not being POUNDED by the Republican media yet. His platform is WAY too far to the left, which the media refuses to mention that most of the country will reject this.
But hey. Whateve PSYCHOLOGICAL POUNDING you can use to get Obama the nomination works, the better. Right?

A drivers license is not a right, its a privelege. Obamas position is nothing short of a political calculation to steal Latino votes from Clinton. It may help him now, but this will be a very unpopular position in the general election. he will be creamed by the republicans and by the majority of Americans. No illeagle should have a drivers license. It’s an I.D. which can be used to obtain other priveleges and rights that should not be garnered for those who are not citizens. The problem isnt one of public safety, but of looking the other way. A comprehensive plan with a pathway to citizenship is needed, but only after they become a legal citizen should they have a license. The rational by Obama is stupid. Give a license to someone breaking the law just to make it easier in another area. Thats a shortcut with short term thinking. Do we give in in other areas just to make it easier? No. Hilary Clinton has the right idea. Deal with the issue as a whole and come up with a comprehensive solution. Dont put a band aid on a problem, look for a cure.

GETTING TO THE CAUSE OF THE IMMIGRATION PROBLEM
Why are people allowed to come and work here while using up public services without entering America through the proper channels?
Well here is a shortlist of the most responsible pols.
1) Reagan & 1986 CONGRESS
They passed the first amnesty bill for undocumented workers (called illegal aliens by everyone then, now only by the uninformed or politically motivated because not all are here illegally);
2) The Clintons & NAFTA
Both Clintons campaigned for and gave DEMOCRATIC credibility to this most-Republican, anti-U.S. worker, and sweeping free trade agreement in our nation’s history to that point. It started the unprecedented levels of outsourcing our jobs to other countries with the incentives given to US automakers and other manufacturers to build plants on the Mexican side of the border, known then as “maquilladores”. It also relaxed rules for work visas and created other incentives for U.S. companies to attract foreign workers.
3) George Bush
Ah, yes. Is there any major problem facing America today that he hasn’t created or severely exacerbated?
Here he did more as GOV of Texas where he got elected by pandering to Mexicans on both sides of the border. Only a conservative revolt in his own Republican party stopped him from goal of another round of amnesty imbedded in a path-to-citizenship that he hoped would trigger mass conversions of Latino voters from DEM to REP nationwide, as he did in Texas.
So this problem has been around since way before Reagan even; and please note that no where on this list does the name Barack Obama appear. He had no part in any of this; except now he is trying to lead us towards a measured and balanced solution.
While REPS today lead with punishment for all here illegally and particularly for those few who may have committed a violent crime; progressive DEMS like Obama focus first on public safety for the entire community.
Since the undocumented are here already; and since, though Obama is right that they primarily come here to work and not to drive, still many have to drive to work here on CA streets and highways; then don’t we want the ones here already, properly trained and licensed to operate a
motor vehicle in your state?
This I’d Obama’s position; and he is neither pandering nor agreeing with Latinos on this issue.
Rather, Obama has cited his support of law enforcement, many of whom across the country initially called for drivers’ licenses as an apolitical way to enhance public safety both through more enlightened driving and the limited ability to somehow track these individuals.
It’s unfortunate that Mrs. Clinton and her supporters insist on politicizing it.
Maybe they feel a desperate need to politicize this, because unlike Obama, Sen. Clinton does share some of the ownership of this entire immigration issue as it related to NAFTA and Mexico. Her name IS on the list referenced above as being chiefly responsible for the creation and mismanagent of this problem which involves global trade, immigration, union-busting/undermining, and cross-border labor laws.
And we remember Sen. Biden and others getting some type of mumbled acknowledgement from Sen. Clinton that NAFTA didn’t work out as they had hoped.
Didn’t it? The Clintons went from being the toast of the Ozark Mountains range in Arkansas to being muli-national “Corporate Democrats” as John Edwards refers to them in his caveat that we not replace Corporate Republicans with Corporate Democrats.
And just in case you think it a stretch or unfair to attribute every accomplishment of the first Clinton Administration to Sen. Clinton; well, you know The Clintons will just have to take the good with the bad as well.
And let me also remind you that the most popular former President of the United States alive today often tells audiences how he never made a single major decision without consulting his wife.
I have to add here that I am married 8 years and I would say the same about my wife. She isn’t a banker, but on judgement calls involving any- and everything that is not pricing-related or a snap-decision requiring immediate action, I am right there with Bill and just more comfortable checking in with my life partner before I step off.
The truth, in retrospect, is that I probably consult with my wife more often than not because of her commanding grasp and complete understanding of me, and not of my professional material.
Either way, I think it’s clear that they co-own the content of their 1st stay in the White House; in fact, Sen. Clinton has publicly claimed NAFTA and a few other high-profile events widely regarded as succeessful.
So since American Police Chiefs own the drivers’ license initiative where it came from, at the state level; it is not so difficult a political position for the DEMS to take on, as it is portrayed, when they can run clips of REP law enforcement officials openly calling for such licenses while the V.O. extolls DEM support for all law enforcement officers from FBI agents to small town police chiefs.
TRANSLATION
1. Obama doesn’t deserve as much credit since it is a relatively safe position for this year; and
2) Sen. Clinton deserves more scrutiny and questions about why she still opposes drivers’ licenses for undocumented workers…after she was initially for them, of course.
And since you’ll never get a straight answer from Sen. Clinton on this, let me suggest that the external political landscape moved, triggering a re-calibration of HRC’S immigration policy.
It is hard to tell what Sen. Clinton’s position on this issue will be in the fall or even in upcoming primaries. It is very likely that she may flop back for them once McCain becomes eventual nominee of his party.
So

If Obama was concerned about Americans, yes even Hisp Americans, he would support deporting illegal immigrants wherever they are found. A license does not assure that the illegals are insured, the main concern to Americans. A driver`s license is merely one more step to foster their self perceived legitimacy in being here illegally.

Most Repubs want Hillary as the candidate, because Hillary is the only candidate that can unite the Republican Party. Don’t be fooled that Hillary is fully vetted, the Repubs are just waiting for her to be the nominee before they start. Hillary and her husband still have not released the list of donors to the Clinton Library fund, Remember Bill pardoned Marc Rich, a felon, on his way out of the White House, after March Rich donated money to the Clinton Library Fund. ex-Prez Jimmy Carter said that action was reprehensible, bothering on fraudulent. Bill and Hillary Clinton will explode before November, there are just too many stories about improper activities by Bill. Amnesty was given to 3 million illegals in 1986, costing taxpayers billions of dollars. That legislation, also supported by Senator Ted Kennedy, D-Mass, has resulted in 12-30 million more illegals entering the US over the past 20 years.
We have so many illegals in the US now because of the 1986 Amnesty that Senator Kennedy told us would prevent further illegal immigration.

Posted by: Carol | February 3, 2008, 11:27 am 11:27 am

What everybody overlooks is that the majority of illegals don’t need drivers licenses because they live in the big cities(more jobs) where taxpayers have already invested obscene amounts of money on public transportation projects. Here in san jose ca you go anywhere on a multitude of trains, buses, and shuttles. Why is public transport only good enough for taxpayers and not illegals?

McCain will whip Obama in the general with this. Another reason why Clinton is a better choice. She’s careful with how she frames things. That’s right folks.. she’s more savvy. Republicans know all about him and this small issue isn’t anywhere close to what they will unleash upon him if he is the candidate they go against for the Nov vote!

Who do you think paid for his private school education and college? His white mother and his maternal grandparents which we really don’t hear about on the campaign trail. You insult the African-American community when you make statements like this. This is an assumption that is made about Hispanics as well. As a white female, who grew up poor on the south side with whites, Mexican- Americans, Puerto Ricans and Blacks, I am assumed to have have grown up privileged. It’s the furthest thing from the truth. I am now grateful for the way I grew up, I earned what I have now.

mccain is an ill-tempered dumb old man with a short fuse.
let’s see hillary lived in the white house. OK.
she went to law school and then failed the bar exam.
had to go to arkansas to take the abbreviated version. only job as a lawyer was a part time job at the rose law firm acquired because she was the governor’s wife.
how does that bribe scheme work with TYSON chicken again?
hillary had $1000 and read the wall street journal and it showed her how to make $100,000 in profits on cattle futures.
where was the FBI on that bribery scheme?

What part of ILLEGAL don’t people understand? I am sick and tired of people who are not here legally and get to take part in our emergency rooms, public schools and have access to college scholarships moreso than people who were born here. It is WRONG. It is ILLEGAL. This is a no brainer, people. It is a slap in the face to all who have come here to live and followed the law by studying and doing all required of them BY THE LAW in order to become legal residents of the US. It is wrong to reward people who break the law. It’s time people started realizing this truth instead of kowtowing to Hispanic lobbyists and liberal politicians who only want votes.

No amnesty for illegals. They need to leave and get in line behind all the other people in the world applying to come to the US legally. Allowing them to stay rewards the illegals and then punishes legal immigrants.
The US already gives illegals so much, free education, health care, etc . . . in my opinion, giving them driver licenses would be a huge step towards amnesty.

You know, Obama likes to talk about change–but really, isn’t he a Washington politician just like everyone else? Also, what has Obama done? Has he done anything memorable besides sit on committees and debate with other senators?
I think real change is getting someone outside of Washington–someone different. As for health care, only 2 people actually did something about it. And that’s Hilary and Romney. I give them credit for actually doing something. Hilary for the first Children’s Health Care package–not the recent one that didn’t pass– and Romney for getting universal health care in his state. At least, Hilary and Romney have actually saved lives by getting people health care–what has Obama done? Nothing– a big, fat O.— Zero —

Seems there is an inordinate amount of rehtoric in regard to the issue of drivers license for illegals. Regardless of all the rethoric one way or the other I see the possibility of this being a useful tool to have some control in this area and if passage of such a law occured it should be very specific, no loop holes, and state that you must have a license to drive, all individuals to which the law applies will have 180 days to comply, failure to apply and obtain one will result in deportation. thereafter upon a trafic stop if it is ascertained the individual has not complied with the law he/she must be arrested finger printed, noted in retrievable records and immediatly deported. If it should be found by fingerprint identification that any individual is in volation of the law a second time he/she shall be banned from immigration to this country for life. Any failure by any enforcement agency to strictly enforce this title will be subject to dismissal and prosecution which could result in a fine of up to 10,000 dollars and inprisonment of up to five years.

giving illegal immagrants drivers licenses will NOT stop the hit and run situation. It won’t stop accidents, and it won’t help you financially if you are hit – COZ they RUN! Why? Because they know they are hear illegally and they don’t want to be caught. Making this legal, as Canada did, will not improve anything about this situation. Legalizing just because people ARE going to do it anyway is such a cop-out! We can make a debate over anything….doesn’t mean it makes good sense to legalize it just because people are going to do it anyway. It won’t change a thing.

The Dems are idiots who care nothing about secure borders, they think everything will be OK if we’re nice and take care of everyone. Ship every damn illegal out of the country (I’ll pay higher prices to cover the labor cost as long as it is legal labor and they are paying back to society). You have to make the penalty so high that you remove the temptation for the majority, then all you have to do is eliminate the rest.
And no, idiot, just because you give them a license does not mean they will have insurance, quit living in a dream world.

Actually Hillary is even worse than either Obama or McCain, when it comes to the illegals.
For she wants to not only give them drivers licenses, but also free health care, free college tuition, and just about everything else.
I don’t like McCain. But I will grudgingly be voting for him simply as the lesser of other evils.

We need to understand that some of the illegal immigrants are not here by choice, such as their children who were forced to come to the USA at a young age. I’m not saying that people should sympathize for these children, but I dont think they deserve the same treatment as their parents. These children deserve the equal opportunity as any other children such as being able to go to school, work, drive, etc. Blame their parents? that’s like saying blame your parents or country for putting you into that situation. We need to find the way to resolve this and make a better place to live for all. Not just this country but other countries in poverty as well. And I hope that Obama or Hillary can make some kind of change.

I have had interesting discussions with several Mexican Americans and their pt. of view has been eye-opening for sure. They stated that they are Americans first. They are proud of their heritage which is understood. They believe that individuals coming into the country should follow the laws of the land, become citizens, come in legally, pay taxes, and learn to speak the language, fly the American flag and don’t run around flaunting the Mexican Flag. As one Mexican American gentleman stated: “You don’t come into my house thru the back door and then start demanding your rights!” Another Mexican American woman stated that she was irritated when an illegal Mexican female friend stated that she is receiving “free” medical care, and other benefits provided for by the U.S. and state government, and that they were contacting friends and family from south of the border to come and get all the “free” stuff. Recently a female Mexican immigrant who has gone thru proper channels to procure a visa etc, stated that she understood why most Americans are angry at illegals. She stated that as many try to do the right thing i.e. pay taxes, etc…, “most” do not and “…, “they are here to get what they can get and send it back home. They care nothing about the country, they even bad mouth the U.S. and never have any intentions of becoming legal. They know how to get the “free” stuff.
She also stated that they use the “race-card” freely.
Also interesting is the fact that you never hear about this in the media as one Mexican American stated, “they press does not want people to know about our views concerning illegal immigration. You will never hear about it…”
Also mentioned: You have to have a visa to go into Mexico, no exceptions. To work in Mexico, you must have a visa and justify why you should have a job and jobs go to Mexican Nationals first! If your visa expires, you have to leave the country. You have to pay taxes if employed in Mexico. Illegal Americans are not allowed into the country. If you are found to be illegal, you do not pass go, you go to jail and are deported, pronto!
(I guess they are racist.)

We give driver’s licenses out to people who study and pass the test everyday yet they still drive like morons, cause accidents and death. So when these folks do this they pay a price and many go to jail. What happens when an illegal who’s not paying any taxes, getting ‘free’ stuff and probably still didn’t get car insurance hits someone, maybe a kid? What if they are drunk? What is the recourse for that? They get deported come back a few weeks later. Why bother with the paperwork for a license because their is not accountability on their part either way. Furthermore, giving a person a driver’s license doesn’t give them common sense. So what they don’t have cars in Mexico so these people have never stepped in a car so its all foreign to them? Look past all of this bull and realize that a huge problem in our country today is a lack of individual accountability. If everyone would just do the right things…you know obey the laws, get a job, pay some taxes, go to school, and stop blaming others for everything then maybe we could get somewhere. For the record, I didn’t grow up rich and entitled. I grew up in a blue collar household that scrapped to get by to parents who had didn’t even had a high school diploma. We never took public assistance. Somehow, through all the grit I managed to put myself through school and find some success as have the rest of my siblings. Everything is achievable but it takes the desire to want it and the work to get it.

What happens to the Kids who have no choice? Kids who have assimilated into American society, living and breathing American air their entire lives who are deprived from one day owning a car in which they see their peers drive day by day? They did not make the choice. Their parents took them to the United States at birth for them to make the best out of the land of opportunity. Now we strive to deprive our future? What happens to the families who are having a difficult time balancing their days, being forced to drive their 17 year olds day in and day out? What happened to the land of equality, the American Dream in which the only obstacle in the path to a person’s success is their willingness to persevere? What happens to kids like me?

I know of a 17yr old American in Central NY who had about a half dozen different documents and he was refused for a simple non-drivers ID from the DMV. Here’s a big Duh to the politicians who support illegals drivers licenses…at most make them prove who they are and where they live and give them a non-drivers ID. It’ll serve the same purpose by insterting them into the DMV database. When are people going to realize that political corruption is right under our noses and they still can’t dig up any dirt in Alaska no matter how hard they try.

You Liberals out there are in for some eye openers if you allow Obama to become President of this Country. Illigal aliens with drivers license is just one more huge step Obama is taking in the WRONG direction for security in the U.S.A. No vote for Obama!!!!

Obama says it’s for public safety. I agree on the public safety part, but what obama doesn’t see is that if we give away drivers lisences to illegals we will also be giving away hundreds of thousands of jobs. Does obama think that illegals will not try to get class C lisences?
