Obama Responds to Clinton on Mailers, McCain and Nader

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: After two of Sen. Barack Obama’s mailers, one on NAFTA and the other on health care, prompted Sen. Hillary Clinton to say, "Shame on you, Barack Obama," Obama told reporters Clinton got “exercised this morning,” and that the notion that “somehow we are engaging in nefarious tactics, I think, is hard to swallow.”

“These are mailers that, by the way, went out, started going out several days ago if not weeks ago," Obama said during an unscheduled news conference in Columbus, Ohio. "So I am puzzled by the sudden change in tone. Unless these were just brought to her attention, it makes me think that there’s something tactical about her getting so exercised this morning.”

Obama said the NAFTA mailer is accurate: “Sen. Clinton, as part of the Clinton administration, supported NAFTA. In her book, she called it one of the administration’s successes.”

When challenged on the mailer’s use of the word “boon” to describe how Clinton felt about NAFTA –- a word Obama attributed to Newsday, which later issued a clarification on its use of the word — he responded, “It is true that the mailer went out before the newspaper made the correction, right? That’s my understanding and I will need to check with staff on that. The characterization that she supports NAFTA, I think, is indisputable."

Obama’s staff later supplied clips from Newsday — noting Newsday did not issue a correction, but rather said "boon" was the paper’s characterization of Clinton’s words.

On the health care mailer, Obama said: “She has been the one who has made this difference about mandates the centerpiece not just of the health care debate, but practically her campaign. And what this mailer does is point out this difference that she herself surfaced and describes what the mandate that she’s calling for would mean, which is that the government would force you to buy health care. That’s indisputable. So the notion that somehow we’re engaging in nefarious tactics, I think, is pretty hard to swallow."

Obama denied the characterization that his health care mailer was similar to the insurance industry’s notorious “Harry and Louise” ads that helped sink Hillary Clinton’s bid at health care reform during the Bill Clinton administration.

“I have seen the mailer and I completely dispute that characterization," Obama said. "Sorry, but what I don’t want to do is to just rehash the specific language of the mailer. There’s nothing in there that’s factually inaccurate. What people are concerned about … and that what I think Sen. Clinton would argue is that she doesn’t like how the mandate is characterized because she wants to characterize it as universal health care — just like I don’t like her characterizing my plan as leaving 15 million people out. But there’s nothing in that mailing that is inaccurate.”

Obama was asked to respond to some Democrats talking about whether or not Clinton should concede the race after losing 10 contests in a row. He said it would be a different question for him, because, “I’m the challenger, I’m the upstart. I’m the insurgent. She’s the champ. She’s part of the Democratic network in Washington and, you know, if you’re the title holder then you don’t lose it on points. You gotta be knocked out."

Asked to respond to the recent John McCain controversy spurred by a New York Times article, Obama noted that several of McCain’s advisers have backgrounds as lobbyists.

“Many of them have been running their business on the campaign bus while they’ve been helping him and he’s comfortable with that," Obama said. "And he’s comfortable with rising money from lobbyists who are currently active in Washington. I think that is a problem.”

“I think it is a legitimate issue for voters to ask if somebody  presents themselves as a reformer and all the guys that  are running your campaign are lobbying on behalf of very special interests and industries,” Obama said of McCain in answer to another question.

Regarding a possible presidential bid by Ralph Nader, and whether the consumer advocate acted as a spoiler for Democrat Al Gore’s presidential bid in 2000, Obama said, “I think anybody has the right to vote for president if they file sufficient papers. And I think the job of the Democratic Party is to be so compelling that a few percentage of the vote going to another candidate’s not going to make any difference.”

Obama confirmed that Nader has called him and reached out to his campaign.

“My sense is that Mr. Nader is somebody who, if you don’t listen and adopt all of these policies, then you’re not substantive," Obama said. "He seems to have a pretty high opinion of his own work. … I don’t mean to diminish him, but I do think there’s a sense now that you know if somebody’s not hewing to the Ralph Nader agenda then you must be lacking in some way.”

I don’t recall her saying Obama’s tactics were extremely wicked but they are evil. He is just so condesending does he think less of women I have to wonder?

Obama’s integrity is fully intact, having backed up ALL of the information on his fliers. Plus he was very calm and collected while under attack. This is what is required of a Commander and Chief. On NAFTA, Newsday admitted to using the phrase that the flier quoted. It was later corrected by Newsday, but the Obama campaign had nothing to do with the original Newsday article, it only quted it. Besides Clinton DID support NAFTA strongly. What was evident today in Hillary Clinton, was behavior VERY unbecoming a possible President of the United States. Presidents take positions on issues NOT tantrums!

This man is just a flat out liar. There is nothing else to say.

oh it was really a tantrum with a big ego attached.

That health care mailer first came out WEEKS ago in Wisconsin. And Hillary first acts all excited about it today? I think sincerity went out the window a long while ago and it’s pretty obvious that her “outrage” was manufactured strictly for the media hype.
You’ve got to admit though, that part worked. Every outlet has a “Shame on You!” headline running.

Posted by: Jeff V | February 23, 2008, 8:53 pm 8:53 pm

Every single word of Obama’s mailer has now been fact checked and confirmed as 100% accurate by every major news outlet in America.
Yet Hillary continues to feign overblown emotion and stir up a false conflict. The Hillary campaign has put out negative attack after negative attack after negative attack this campaign. She has no credibility in this matter.

Obama will be brought to his knees.
Things look good now.
But things are changing rapidly.
The Pendulum swings folks.
Don’t count your bamas before they hatch.

If he has this thing tied up ten why the attack?

Posted by: Bishop | February 23, 2008, 9:04 pm 9:04 pm

So much for Hillary going down with poise and class.
Expect about another week of hysterical meltdowns followed by two or three days of tears before the vote.
Is anyone fooled by her stunts anymore?

Interesting how blatantly biased the media is when they cover these stories.
The Obama machine uses dirty smear tactics and the media’s claims “Hillary is Furious” if it had been the other way around the headline would have said “Hillary attacks Obama with Smear Tactics”.
In other words we’re biased because we can be,
we’re afraid of being accused of racism for attacking Obama so we don’t and our blatant misogynistic tactics on Clinton are acceptable-
because after all she’s just a woman.

Posted by: Enough | February 23, 2008, 9:10 pm 9:10 pm

The desperation in Senator Clinton’s “outrage” is so transparent. She began engaging in these sorts of attacks exponentially ever since it became clear that her lead was evaporating.
Her campaign is tanking and these attacks only reveal her to be flailing out of frustration of seeing her personal ambitions vanish before her eyes.

One minor dimension of these little spats engineered by the Clinton campaign… Hillary looks like she’s going to blow a fuse and Obama looks completely calm.
Who do you want with their finger on the button? These guys have to be able to handle tense situations, and we don’t want a president who loses their cool over a totally minor issue.

Obama has placed himself in a position where the media is walking on eggshells. Well Hillary is trying to crack the veneer that Obama has built by showing that he is no different from old style washington politicians which he acknowledged by saying the mailers are accurate and he finds it hard to swallow. What I find hard to swallow is that he believes the American voting public is to stupid to eventually see through the veneer. Go Hillary drill a hole right into Obama’s facade and crack it right open. HOPE indeed, that people will wake up and see that they have been duped, brainwashed and bamboozled by the O Kool-Aid. He’s already too presidential to attend the Black State of the Union and if he’s elected he’ll leave you inhaling his limo fumes as he darts around on his high horse. Do Whatever it takes Hillary and WIN.

Recalling the ‘weak woman’ tactics we saw the night before new Hampshire, please counter this foolishness and call it what it is. Clinton is not above using the sympathy of flaccid minded electorate that can buy her lala ‘I am weak I am woman, give me a chance’ routine.
In this race Obama is the feminist, have no doubt. he is the one meeting women eye to eye, and he would not talk down to Hilary although that crying and pouring coffee routine was a bit much for even the calloused stomached of us to take.
Counter them Mr President.

I had been considering voting for Hillary, but I see her increasingly pandering to the anger in her supporters just as Bush panders to and incites fear in his supporters. I think both of these emotions are way too destructive for our country, and I personally can not afford to entertain them, much less be driven by them. Accordingly, I have decided to support Sen. Obama, because he shows an evenness of temperament and the conditions of character and judgement that are necessary to assume command of our military and leadership of our civilian population. He is a pragmatist, and an honest, hard-working, pull-yourself-up-by-the- bootstraps kind of man, who does not whine and complain about how hard life is for himself, but rather looks at ways that he can provide opportunities for others, who have not had the presence of mind that he was blessed with to make something of themselves. To those who would criticize Sen. Obama, I only ask that before you do so, please read both of his books: Dreams from My Father, and the Audacity of Hope. You will get a very clear picture of his superb intellect and his sincere compassion for others. He has the strength of character and will, the fortitude and courage of spirit, and the faith and compassion for others to become a world-class leader. Under his leadership, America will once again join the highest calling of its people and its providence.

If you listened to the video she said was upset because the mailer was proven to be inaccurate . She wasn’t acting as if this was the first she heard of them. She’s mad that he is still using those falsehoods that were proven to be not true. She’s got a write to be mad!

NAFTA killed our jobs in Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and all over the US.
To vote for Hillary is the same as agreeing to NAFTA. It has ruin our economy and taken our manufacturing jobs.
She only said she would suspend NAFTA. Yea, maybe after the election is over she’ll forget it. Her and her husband profited from it.
Obama is the only one that said he will renegotiate NAFTA and give company tax breaks when they bring jobs back to our community and state.
Wake up people. Clinton’s want NAFTA!

The Hillary’s supporters who STILL deny the facts on the flyers are those who have NEVER read her book. The FACTS about NAFTA is there. She WROTE them herself. It’s a problem NOW because of Ohio. Why don’t YOU voters stop this laziness and do some research? Wait. That’s right—- Hillary knows you’re too lazy to find out the truth about her. It’s QUITE easy to feed you lies.
It’s AMAZING how hysterical she becomes over TRUTH.

I’m sorry he doesn’t like people pointing that out but he continues to defraud the American people.

I don’t get where some people figure that Obama has no mandate in his health care plan. There is a mandate that children be covered, does he plan to have a shakedown of all those toddlers piggy banks? The parents will be MANDATED to have their children be part of his plan and while he keeps bringing up the issue of garnishment in regards to Clinton’s plan, if these parents don’t pay their premium they’ll endure the same consequences. He acknowledged in the debate that for those who opt out of the plan that there will be penalties when they eventually end up sick or in the hospital. Who do you think picks up the slack for these individuals when they end up in the hospital? Common sense and a little bit of intelligence would tell one that if all children need to be enrolled then someone is being mandated to pay those premiums within his plan.

Obama’s integrity is intact. Time is running out Hillary, you have to do the right thing and concede and help Obama build a strong and united democratic party to beat McCain as a drum in November. There is no need to cry, no need to get angry, no need to vindicate, do the noble thing, through in the towel. Yu are the past and Oama is the future.

I do think the timing is suspect. She has to have had these fliers for days and today she decides to come out screaming. SUSPECT???? I think so!
Some days, I’m convience she’s bi polar.
At the debate, her ending was mellow and soft spoken and she loved Barack Obama. And today, like I said, screamin’ like a banshee.

I want the best candidate to win in November, but if there is some dirt that has not come out we need to see it now. The conservatives will use any dirt on them and defeat him in November. The Main Stream Media is doing us a disservice by not questioning him more. He is being set up for a fall.
I want a Democrat to win in November.

I have never felt it necessary to post on one of these blogs until tonight. Mostly I have read them with amusement. Having waffled or been on the fence so to speak between Senator’s Obama and Clinton, tonight my mind has been made up and I must speak. Hillary, the shame is on you! We have watched you attack Obama and tell half truths, all the while he remained dignified and did not bash back at you. Now tonight, I am very surprised to see that he has, but I have to say it is about time!!! Right back at you, but now you cry foul! At least he can substantiate and back up his claims, which is more than I can say for you! Hopefully Obama will make it on the ballot in the November elections so that I don’t have to vote Republican. The more I see of you, the more I know you would not make a good Commander in Chief. You are too moody, emotional and bitchy.

NAFTA, explain why it failed? Then tell how it could work. It had to be good for all the countries involved or it would not have passed through congress. Its a failure because,,, the policies are not being enforced, Hillary at the time this was signed into law, it should have been a success. she knows now that and I quote needs to be retooled. In obama speech, its called half truths. he played this card back in december in the debates, now you are all upset that hillary is angry for doing the same. you are all hypocrits.

If there is any “dirt” about Obama or Michelle do you really think the Clintons would not have found it? They interviewed his kindergarten teacher, for goodness sake!! — Also, his mailers were ‘attacks’ only in that they pointed out TRUE FACTS that she doesn’t like having publicized (her previous support for NAFTA and the reality of what a health care ‘mandate’ means). Compare these to the mailers she sent 1-2 days before the NH primary LYING about his stand on pro-choice (saying that he failed to support legislation in Ill. when in fact he cast ‘present’ votes at the **request** of Ill. Planned Parenthood to protect moderate legislators) and his Social Security proposal (which would require additional contributions only from those making more than $102,000 a year, not the ‘hard working middle class’ and senior citizens as the mailer says) She lies – he holds his temper and keeps campaigning. He tells the truth – she has a public meltdown. Go figure. I know which one I would rather have for President.

jk… you will probably vote Republican anyway once you hear more about Barrak Hussein Obama and his wife Michelle. This is my point. He talks a good game but there is no substance. There is Hypocrisy. The Republicans will attack him as Anti American, Anti Military, Soft on Defense, Afraid of the Terrorists, certainly afraid to stand up to Saddam Hussein by not voting to give the President the power to use force and on and on…he lacks experience blaaa blaaa blaaa.
It’s not about NAFTA people. The Republicans want him to be the nominee. Who do you think voted for him in the primary…RED state Republicans. Wake Up.

Posted by: RJ | February 23, 2008, 11:01 pm 11:01 pm

Hillary’s outburst is unbecoming of a person who aspires to be the next president of America.
What Obama has claimed in his mailers are true. If they are not, then come out with a convincing rebuttal. Instead, scraming “Shame on you, Obama” is not the right response. Rather, it appears as a last gasp of desperation when all else has failed.
Obama, on the other hand, is not buying into her tantrum. Instead, he stands his ground. Why shouldn’t he? Screaming won’t change the truth. The truth is Hillary’s universal health care proposal mandates everyone to subscribe to it and has a penalty clause for those who fail to do so. In fact she has been trumpeting this as a singular difference to those proposed by Obama and others. She even went so far as to lie that Obama’s plan will leave out 15 million Americans from coverage.
On NAFTA, there is no denying it was Bill’s baby and she has hailed it as one of her husband’s achievements. Now before the people of Ohio who have paid a heavy price to her husband’s folly, she is singing a different tune. This smacks of her stand on the Iraq war. She thought it would be a winner like the first Gulf War, and wanted to be on the winning side, so she supported it. When that culculation went wrong and the war became unpopular, she switched sides for political expediency.
Hillary should stop play acting. The Carl Rove-style character assassination of your opponent is not going to endear you to the American voters. Your call to the Democratic Party peers to rope in Obama is rightfully going to fall on deaf ears. They can see this as your act of desperation when all else has failed. Come clean, Hillary. Do the right and honourable thing and bow out before being humiliated by the voters of Texas and Ohio.

Fact: Hillary got caught with her pantsuit down on this one. She has made an issue of 2 areas where her stand on them is as clear as day. I don’t know who her advisor is but perhaps she needs to replace this person too as they do not seem to be doing her any favors with this advice. Yes, it gives her coverage with the media but at what cost when intelligent people learn quite easily that she is lying? I mean, do her advisors, or her, think that this will generate votes? or do they think that people preceiving her as being “aggressive” makes her look more presidential? Obama was clearly more Presiential looking during the debate last week while what sticks in the mind of many was the booing Clinton got for, once again, just being ugly.

Hillary will not bow out. She, and her perjuried husband, both feel that they can still bully democrats that fear the reprucussions if she does win this nomination. There are many books at the local library about Hillary and her actions through the years. The womanh has flip flopped so many times on so many issues that I’m surprised that anyone could still support her. Face it folks, 30 years of Clintons and Bush’s and look at where we are as a nation. 8 with George 1, 8 with Billy the perv, 8 with George 2 and now we are suppose to want 8 more with Hillary and Billy the perv again????

I would rather that the next president of the United States not be ranting and raving from some podium somewhere over a hot-topic issue. Certainly, there will be hot-topic issues in the future for the president to speak about wouldn’t you think? I agree with a lot of the previous posts that facts are facts. This public outburst was strategic in its design, but carelessly conducted. Don’t let your intelligence be so insulted by a person who feels that by squeaking out a tear here and there and a providing an outburst of feigned anger can sway your opinion and vote! Unfortunately, this is probably just the beginning of the tantrums yet to come considering our next president will most likely be Senator Obama. And she said she would be fine! This is fine?

Hey Hillary where is your substance? I guess you have none. Thats why you are crying foul.We all know what they say about the truth. Today all Hillary’s supporter understand that she can’t handle the truth. I feel her pain. The truth finally hit home.
Hey today she realize that word is more powerful than substance.

JKan – I guess different people see things differently. None of the adjectives you wrote sound to me like Obama. They do sound quite a bit like his opponent.
Again, different people see things differently.

It is very unbecoming of a presidential candidate to get so emotional over mailers that spoke the truth. I received mailers like those 3 weeks ago, so I’m sure her campaign was aware of them at that time. This is so obviously a way to get attention, it is pathetic. Does Hillary think we aren’t listening to the debates? I, like millions of other Americans heard her say her insurance plan mandates everyone buy it who isn’t already covered by a plan. As for the NAFTA subject, in her own book she praised it as an accomplishment of Bill’s administration. If even I could see NAFTA and the Chinese Trade Agreement would cost us American jobs, before they were signed, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the Clintons were pushing those trade agreements through for corporation’s benefits, not American workers. That’s the core of Obama’s plans; by taking away corporate influence over Washington, we can prevent bad legislation, etc. from ever being approved.

Hillary’s act is a tactical one.Her camp decided to go negative again, because she is now behind in the polls in Ohio and in Texas. So the tactical setup is to blame him first of negative campaining, so that we are able to justify our attacks.Hillary is a might-greedy person. She will do anthing to win.So the question is, can we trust her.It is very difficult for me, after her act today, to believe in her uprightness and trutfullness.Hillary stayed to long in Wastington. Her attacks on Barack expose the characteristics of the dirty, nasty and divisive politics of Washington, we all are sooo tired of

Only weeks ago I thought I was going to support Hillary. It was her and Bill’s unfair attacks on Obama that changed my faith in them and started to learn more about Obama. To say the least Hillary seems to demand a double standards here – its ok she and bill to attack almost daily, but shame on anyone who dares to attack (or tell the truth) them. As a professional woman and a mother, I am shocked to see Hillary using that kind of language towards a fellow Democrat. Wake up WOMEN – enough disgrace for all of us.

your vote, thank you for providing something of substance to the argument instead of the irrational ramblings of blind followers who just believe what they are told. i, too, had seen those articles, and had observed that obama’s policy positions on pretty much everything were positions previously espoused by others and now claimed as his own. but blind followers just point to his website, his speeches, his propaganda releases, etc., and accept what they are told as true – and refuse to believe otherwise even when confronted with uncontrovertible evidence. it would be nice if facts mattered in this election, but it appears that they don’t. anyway, thanks for fighting the good fight.

I agree wih a lot of you posters here Mrs Clinton lost it big time and it was proven the fliers were right on..Just another Clinton negative outburst to try and make Mr Obama look bad. To bad most of us heard what she said about healthcareand how she would achieve it.,that really really turned me off of her campaign. and again Nafta she did endorse it while her husban was president and Mr Clintons saying she never liked ittells us all something about the Clintons themselves. She admitted she thoughtthe plan was good, why is he now saying she did not like it? Did the two not talk and decide what to say??Yes we can Obama /08

The bursts of emotion out of Hillary are just the same ploy she used in New Hampshire and again later in the campaign (in SC I think?) to sway the female vote. I can’t take it seriously anymore.
I really do think Hillary is a great candidate for the Democrats, but she needs to just stop being a political drone and just be a real, normal person. It’s not that the media is biased against her, it’s just that she’s not a very likable person, at least publicly. For now, my vote will go to Obama unless the REAL Hillary Clinton stands up…

Obama’s mailer actually started circulating in CA prior to Super Tuesday.
But, to sum it up, the analisys reveals that while it was not a comprehensive representation of her plan, there were no “lies” in the mailer.
Or hey! Here’s an idea. Stop the rhetoric, and read their plans yourself!
As for NAFTA:
In her book, Hillary tried to take credit for NAFTA: “Creating a free trade zone in North America-The largest free trade zone in the world-would expand U.S. exports, create jobs and ensure that our economy was reaping the benefits, not the burdens of globalization.” (Hillary Rodham Clinton, Living History, 2003, p. 182)
Personally, “reaping the benefits” sounds like “boon” to me.

Posted by: Michael | February 24, 2008, 2:46 am 2:46 am

Goodness forbid Obama and Clinton actually debate ISSUES (healthcare, NAFTA) rather than make personal attacks. I can’t believe this is being turned into some dirty attack. It’s a PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN people, not a 5-year old Little League game where you can’t criticize the players.

Where was Mr.Obama today in New Orleans?Tavis has taken much criticism for not coming out for the “black candidate” but now we see why. I always remember what I was taught as a child; be careful what you wish for. Go Hillary–you showed up even though the voting in Louisiana was over and you lost that battle. Even if this man is “lucky” enough to win the nomination, I will write your name in!!

Shame on you Hillary for not using those words to Bill, your husband. Why didnt you get in an tantrum when he was in the oval office doing what he was doing to that young girl. NAFTA? Why don’t you ask Obama about the U.S./ Peru Trade agreement? It’s an extension of and flawed model of NAFTA.
Obama publicly supported it (so did
Clinton) and didn’t show to vote on it
(so did Clinton). He attacks NAFTA for costing jobs but yet when given the
chance to prevent the expansion of
NAFTA to another country, where was he?Based on what he’s said he would have
supported it had he shown. He’ll say
this act has protections in it for
workers and the environment but there’s
no teeth in it. Nothing in it ensures
the U.S. and Peru will enforce it, and
we know how much Obama says he trusts the Bush administration to enforce anything. So how does he explain that? In front of labor and farm audiences he’s about change and promises to fight the corporations but in front of his
corporate donors (Exelon, UBS, JP Morgan
& Chase and so on) he’s their ally.
Like the scolding of Exelon (his
largest corporate contributor) when
their nuclear plant had leaks and the
good bill he wrote all to appease the
residents of Illinois and I say this
because he later rewrote and watered down the bill (which didn’t pass the
Senate) to accomodate Exelon and nuclear
regulators. He’s absolutely no different
than Clinton. At least she doesn’t deny
her record whereas he slips and slides
around his record, with the help of the
media and his supporters who clearly haven’t done their homework on his
record. If Clinton should account for
her votes or lack of, then so should
Obama. Hope and Change? Only in your dreams. But I forgot, he is an
inspirational speaker. If you were
really concerned about NAFTA, PACS, and
corporate influence you wouldv’e voted
Edwards.

Posted by: JUNIOR | February 24, 2008, 5:03 am 5:03 am

Hope? Change? Where’s the political courage to take on all that he intends to take on? 6-7 votes where he couldn’t
tell a green button from a red one, but
“Oops, I voted this but meant to vote
that”. He voted 140-150 times “present”,
it’s OK to do that in Illinois, but
it’s an out for a politician who doesn’t
want to take the political flak forthe vote he wouldv’e supposedly made.
On votes like reproductive rights
either you’re for it or you’re not, “present” is supported by agencies like Planned Parenthood to give politicians political coverage on
controversial votes and yet still
block the opposing votes. Is it OK
to vote “present”, yes- but don’t talk
about political courage in that case.
Obama publicly comes out against Iraq
before he can vote in the Senate and
then once he gets in where he can vote
he votes identical to Clinton (with the
exception of one vote where he was
pro-Bush) in unconditionally supporting
a war he did not support nor believe
in. Political Courage? No way. Had he
been consistent with his belief that
this war was wrong to enter into and
voted to not fund that war his
Presidential aspirations wouldv’e been
down the tubes. Did he take on one of
his largest corporate contributors,
Exelon, when there were leaks in their
nuclear power plant? Yes, he scolded
them publicly and wrote a good bill
and then turned around and watered
down the bill to accomodate his
nuclear power producer contributor,
Exelon. Political courage? No way.
He attacks Clinton for NAFTA then
publicly supports the NAFTA extension
Peru/U.S. Trade Agreement (along with
Clinton). There’s a theme in his record and it certainly doesn’t point to the political courage needed to bring on the kind of change he promises. You can go on and on about Clinton’s record but you better start looking closely at Obama’s because you can guarantee the Republicans will be able to do what Clinton has seemed incapable of doing in her campaign, and that’s calling attention to the charade. Obama has had a free pass from the media so far but when Clinton isn’t around to kick Obama’s pass will expire. Time
won’t be on his side in a general
election.

Posted by: sue | February 24, 2008, 5:08 am 5:08 am

Shame on you Hillary. Now you are insulting Barack. After saying that his proposed change is a one you can Xerox. You are loosing this election and you know it. Now you are loosing your temper. Frankly you are too polarizing. Your last stand will be Texas. Adios….

Posted by: Docta | February 24, 2008, 5:33 am 5:33 am

Junior- where are you getting your information? You obviously aren’t even checking out the mainstream pro-Obama media (the same media that thought
Paris Hilton’s DUI was newsworthy) let alone digging further into what any of the candidates voting records/ experience or positions are. Clinton did
visit the family of the officer who died
or her “death officer” as you refer to,
cancelled a rally that was scheduled and
has spoken of it in a couple speeches
since. And where was Obama on the U.S./Peru trade agreement? If he didn’t believe in and support the war in Iraq why did he vote identical to Clinton to unconditionally fund the war he didn’t support and believe in once he actually got into a position where he could vote? Are you even aware Obama has big corporate contributors such as Exelon?
which could explain why he referred to
nuclear power as “green” or contributors like UBS and JP Morgan
Chase ? which could explain why he was OK with credit card interest rates higher than 30% (Clinton and Edwards voted against it, he didn’t). Hope, change and inspirational- yeah, right.

I think it is comical that Hillary is crying foul now…Her pollsters have probably told her she does better when she has the voters’ sympathy. However, the only mistake Hillary has really made is bringing her hound dog husband into the mix. The NYT is right, we do have Clinton fatigue…not caused by her, but by Bill. He keeps her from representing true change. That is why Obama is ahead.

I am an indipendant with a libritarian tilt. I am willing to be taxed in exchange for health insurance, but the idea of the government passing a law that makes me a criminal if I am unwilling to buy something from a private for profit company frightens me! And if a mandate is the starting point for fixing our health insurance problem, it will be a non-starter. Apparently it was possible to pass such a law in Massachusetts but not so in California, that such a law could ever make it through the U.S. congress is nill.
Barack Obama has a talent at working with very conservative Republicans (Senators Lugar & Coburn) to acchieve valuable accomplishments.
In a democracy the only way to get change is to get a ruling majority on issues. Libritarians and independant are in the balance and conservative republican a not out of bounds.

I’m convinced Karl Rove works for her campaign. She is a pro at accusing others of doing exactly what she does and attacking another person’s strengths — unity, optimism, hope — as if they are bad things. Further, she should not have been the one waving the mailers around having a fit for the cameras, it does not appear presidential. She should have had a spokesperson do it if the campaign wanted to go there. Up is down and around is under, Bush lite, she has a lot of nerve accusing the other side of running a divisive campaign.

Mariann Pepitone – you seem to frequently bring up your accusations directed toward Obama as proven fact. I don’t see much difference between you and Republicans who used to say with absolute certainty that Hillary Clinton was a lesbian scientologist.
More than likely both attempts at personal destruction reflect nothing more than the childish playground rants that seem to thrive among those who frequently use the internet for political discussion.

The HRC camp IS going into negative attack mode! Just look at all the “Canned” BO character attacks in the comments posted here. Change is good for Americans, but not in the day-to-day personality of it’s leader.

Posted by: John E | February 24, 2008, 12:12 pm 12:12 pm

Clinton has been in negative attack mode on and off for awhile, depending on how threatened she feels. Her behaviour just prior to the NH primaries was similar, but more covert. She sent out a a direct mailing full of untruths about Obama’s position on choice and women’s health issues, and she did it with only two days to go until the vote (i.e., no time for Obama to have a rebuttal).
Live by the sword, die by the sword, Sen. Clinton — direct mail is a real drag, isn’t it? Only Obama’s mailings are based on facts, and yours on fabrications.

This goes to show how ignorant the voters are and how well the Hope Man Obama is playing you. I bet, most of the shrillers here could even name which countries signed NAFTA.
To those who changed their mind from HRC to the Hope Man because of this, kepp your crap to yourself. You were never going to support HRC anyway.

Newsday says today that reporters used the word “boon” as a characterization of Hillary’s position “based on a review of past stories and her public statements” so it sounds like an accurate characterization of her policies. Newsday also admits, it did not make it clear enough that the words were not Hillary’s but the newspapers.

It may appear that Obama is getting a free pass, but the truth is, he hasn’t done anything wrong. Every attack against him by Hillary has been against his character or has proven to be a contrived effort to smear him. He has righfully attacked her health care plan, and her choice to promote and support NAFTA, never her character.

i really don’t see what is negative when you state facts that is backed up
by different news organizations. Everyone knows that Hillary runs on the accomplishments of her husband, so you just can’t separate the good from the bad you run on all of it. It goes both ways with him or her. if statements are facts let it be. I support both candidates whichever one is nominated it will be better than what we have now, so stop whining.

Accept the fact that we all don’t think or feel alike on all the varied people, beliefs, ideas, solutions etc.
For the past 7 years we have been lied to, misled, had our credibility shattered, lost our moral center – Let’s try something different.
Just based on the diversity of all these comments, Obama has his work cut out for him – to bring us all together. But I believe if it can be done, He is the one to do it.

One can have universal health care by law enforcement anytime. Just make it a law enforcement issue that everybody has to buy it, whatever the cost, enforce it with draconian penalties, and, viola! – you got “universal health care”. Never mind that the cost, which is real problem, could be prohibitive. As fara s the industry goes, corporations love mandated insurance, because it guarantees them the largest possible market, while in the same time leaving them with some vague incentives to self-limit their profits. The nontrivial challenge is to lower the cost, of course, so Hillary’s attacks on Obama’s plan are unfair and completely misleading, yet she does it over and over again…Shame on you Hillary R. Clinton!

Ready on day 1, Really? Hillary is weeks behind in setting up campaign offices and ground works. I saw reports on that her campaigns being out hustled and is inefficient. In Pennsylvania she failed to turn in a full slate of delegates before an extended deadline to do so. In the mist of the race she doesn’t know how the delegates in Texas will be awarded. Ready on day 1, she isn’t ready for tomorrow let alone the presidency.
I think this whole dog and pony show was some one telling her to go down in flames.

Posted by: Randomaxe | February 24, 2008, 8:51 pm 8:51 pm

Randomaxe – I hadn’t seen that, about Clinton not turning in a full slate of Pennsylvania delegates. What’s the end result of that?
By the way, I agree with your overall point. If how a candidate runs a campaign is any indication of how that candidate might run the office sought, then we have to wonder if she’d be ready for day one by the end of her first term.

Posted by: Paul | February 24, 2008, 11:17 pm 11:17 pm

I cannot understand how people remain in denial of the truth sometimes – and in the case of this issue – how Hillary supporters can shamelessly bring themselves to even speak on this matter.
Hillary supporters, stop lying to yourselves! Can you count how many times, throughout this campaign, Hillary has viciously attacked senator Obama? Just last week in Wisconsin, Hillary had the very same type of mailer sent out to Wisconsin residents… And it was totally surreal to me when I heard this woman say “Since when do Democrats attack each other on health care?” I was literally in shock. Oh my _od, This woman can and will say anything!
The truth is, Hillary is not a sincere person by nature. All of the things she’s been saying in rallies lately that resemble any sincerity are echoes of Senator Obama’s speeches. Listen closely, it’s almost funny!
Then she goes and raises some plagiarism issue, while there are countless of evidence of her using the exact same phrases, if not paragraphs of her husband in her campaign – and even Obama’s. Makes no sense.
At some point I’ve seen Hillary’s campaign use even the same ‘change’ signs Obama has been using, and I’ve heard her speak for change. However, most recently she’s stood against ‘change’ and even saying “change you can Xerox on.”
She seemingly initiates conciliation with Obama one night “I’m so honored to be next to you”; then the next day she wakes up and say “Shame on you, Obama.” Hillary has too may faces, in power she is well positioned to use them.
There are just too many conflicting instances to point out on her behalf. The majority of the American people have seen that about her… I just wish her supporters would stop lying to themselves about who’s falsely attacking!
The Verdict: Hillary simply WANTS to be president and will do anything to get there!
Obama genuinely, though somewhat naively, wants to HELP, if president!

Hillary gets petty and meaner, as she gets desperate. She has run a shoddy campaign, and since there is nothing to lose, she is showing her mean side. She has decided to take the Rovian way, and is becoming nastier by the minute. She mocks, she ridicules, she feigns anger, she is losing. Look at Hillary’s ugly side, and you realize that you do not want to see this for the next four years. According to Andrea Mitchell, her campaign is in shambles. She should not take it out of Senator Obama! Everytime she shows her nasty side, it just reminds the country of her high negative ratings.

Posted by: Tonya Simpson | February 25, 2008, 8:31 am 8:31 am

I have heard about enough! I have supported Hillary all along, and then recently thought maybe Obama’s plans are just a bit better. But, after hearing her lastest speech and his retort, Hillary is the best candidate. Obama may appear cool and calm, but he is so arrogant and so condoscending. For those of you who agreed that it has been proved that Hillary was all for NAFTA, you must not be listening closely to her speeches and debates. She has said over and over again that “yes” she was for NAFTA when her husband was in office, but that time showed that there were mistakes with NAFTA. Do you think for once that Obama will not make a mistake? At least, Hillary admits to mistakes. And do we not learn from our mistakes? If Obama has never made a mistake, like misinforming the people in his mailers, then he has not learned very much, has he? As far as Hillary showing emotion, I find it admirable that she allows Americans to see her as a real person because that is who she is. I would rather have someone in the White House who has real compassion for the American People then someone who is just a political machine. On the issue of special interest groups….who are we, but special interest groups. The teamsters just backed Obama. Now that is a huge special interest group with lobbyists galore. Who is Obama meeting with in Ohio? Unions. And Unions are special interest groups. People you need to read it all. Obama lies and smears because he cannot stand on his own merit. If you vote for him, you are voting for trouble and we will be in the shape as we have been during the Bush administration.

Bob says: “Obama’s integrity is fully intact”
Yes indeed. Obama says “I will serve out my full six year term.”
Obama says he is not “invested in the battles of the sixties”
Of course not – others fought those battles for him. Too bad he wants to accept the mantle of the New Martin Luther King but he doesn’t want to do any of the messy stuff – nor to acknowledge what those who went before him did. Too bad he dismisses the battles for civil rights, for ending the Viet Nam war, for ending nuclear proliferation, — even for cleaning up the Hudson River.
Too bad – because those battles are not yet won. And the next President of the United States should be dedicated to winning them, not dismissing them.
Too bad Barak Obama slights those who went before, dismissing people who grew up in the 50s and 60s as obstreperous, quarrelsome, obsolete.
We had “short resume” and on-the-job training with George W. Bush. He wasn’t vested in the “battles of the sixties” either.

A republican will win the presidency and it will all be thanks to the democrats (again) who can’t get along. And the republicans will laugh once again. Thanks for being putty in the republicans hands fellow democrats. Remember what I said when it happens. And decide if it was worth it when you have a republican president for another four years. You all will never learn!
