Philly Blunt: PA Gov. Says Some Keystone Staters Won’t Vote for a Black Man
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a prominent supporter of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that some white Keystone Staters won’t vote for a black man.
"You’ve got conservative whites here, and I think there are some whites who are probably not ready to vote for an African-American candidate," Rendell said. "I believe, looking at the returns in my election, that had [2006 Republican gubernatorial candidate] Lynn Swann been the identical candidate that he was — well-spoken, charismatic, good-looking — but white, instead of black, instead of winning by 22 points, I would have won by 17, or so."
Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has said similar things — see HERE and HERE.
In such a heated political environment, post-South Carolina, can a man in Rendell’s position, of his hue, discuss racism without being accused of being a racist himself?
I suppose we shall see.

In the current political climate, it’s okay for a black person to talk about racism but highly verboten for a white person to do so or even mention it without being accused of being racist. Sometimes, mentioning racism isn’t even required as long as the subject talked about is a black person, just as what happened when Bill Clinton said that Obama’s anti-Iraq war stance in Congress was a “fairy tale.” In a lot of current rap music, it’s okay for a black rapper to mention the n-word but not okay for a white person to do so. There’s a lot of double standards around, and some people will defend them to the death when challenged about it.

The Gov. of PA says – white will not vote for Blacks
Looking at the exit polls tonight – it seems to me that African Americans will not vote for whites (more than 50% of Obama’s Potomac votes are AA)

This can ONLY be a sign of Senator Clinton’s growing desperation.
Her campaign clearly has decided to nuke and write off black voters in a vain attempt to appeal to the “subtle” (and occasionally overt) racism of some white, mostly southern voters.
So long, Bill Clinton. It appears you weren’t the first “black president” after all.

The Gov. of PA is calling the white voters in his states a bunch of racists. It amounts to an attack on behalf of the Clintons to scare white democrats over to their side out of fear of losing to those racists republicans. It sounds like its the democrats who are racists and have been using race to win their seats. The race baiting hurt them after SC and this is bound to hurt them more. And help the GOP while they are at it.

I think it is ignorant to accuse blacks of being racist because of they have massively supported Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton. First off, if they were NOT votng for him, the pundits would be accusing the community of NOT supporting him. Secondly, I would point out that African American presidential candidates in the past did NOT get that kind of support. Al Sharpton ran fro President in 2004, Alan Keyes in 2000, and Jesse Jackson in 1984 and 1988. Jesse Jackson faired better out of all of them, but once again, it shows that the reason Barack Obama is getting somuch support is not only for the color of his skin.
Thirdly, applying that same logic, could I surmise that all of the women that have showed overwhelming support for Clinton in the past are sexist? Since Latinos are showing so much support for Clinton, are they racist against blacks?

I don’t think that the govenor is racist with his statement. It is a well known fact that certain people won’t vote for a person because of their race, gender, or religion. No news here.
However, I think that the timing of his statement is terrible (There is never a good or bad time to talk about this kind of stuff). On the national forum this may be of some concern
With Clinton facing some tough challenges ahead and Obama winning in places which are overwhelmingly white against a white competitor this doesn’t hold weight in the democratic primaries because it would seem that some people wouldn’t vote for a woman.
Using the Govenor’s analogy, if Obama were a white candidate with identical characteristics, like Govenor Ed Rendell said of Lynn Swann, would the margin of defeat of Hillary in many states been greater and the states that Obama lost to Hillary been narrower???

Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton? Got fatigue. It is an act of desparation and panic for Gov. Rendell to be injecting race into the Democratic Presidential primary elections. If Gingrich can see the coming sweep by Obama and is asking the Conservatives to leave the Republican Party, why is Rendell burying his head in the sand. He should allow the white inhabitants of Pennsylvania to speak for themselves. Americans, particularly the young adults, are saying that they are tired of race against race, gender against gender, the politics of fear, the politics of personal destruction and old the scandals that the Clintons have adorned the White House with in the past. Rendell it is time to turn the page to the future! Move with the wind of change of be left in oblivion. Take a look at the rallies on the TV. If you were in Obama’s position I would vote for you. There is just no comparison between Obama and Hillary. Turn the page. Americans are suffering from Bush-Clinton fatigue. Enough is enough.

Governor Rendell’s point of view is just plain stupid and deliberately telling white voters that it is ok if you don’t vote for an African American. He is quoting Chris Rick when he says – “I understand.”

Rendell is speaking bluntly, but his comments are irrelevant. The fact that there are masses of ignorant people is not a basis to support a candidate opposite the candidate that the ignorant people will not support. I support Clinton for experience reasons only, and for no other reason.
It sounds like the media went on a gopher hunt on this one. I’d like to hear the whole context next time.

I have more confidence in the voters in Pennsylvania. For him to compare Lynn Swann to Barack Obama is outrageous.
I think we are more progressive than he gives us credit for. Black people have been voting for whites for years…why is it so hard to believe that whites would vote for a person of color who is attempting to set this country back on course. Remember this, he can’t do any worst than George Bush and may do a whole lot better ….

I believe the people of this state are better than that. I think people want the status quo. Hillary is the status quo. Face it guys. Hillary is going to lose. The people are speaking their minds across this country. We need change and changing names from a Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton is just more of the same. Mrs Clinton is on the brink of losing this thing and now you are seeing people who want status quo run scared. We want real change…not just a change in names.

At this modern age, it is unbelivable to think that someone who is the governor of a state would make such a comment. But what more can you expect from a man who has racism flowing in his blood stream, he is a man of low esteem and virtue, I wondered how he became the governor of PA. This gorvernor needs a new orientation, I dont know if He would have to be reborn. America needs a new direction and for saying what he said i think he would forever remain a slave to his own soul.

I think that the people regardless is caught up in something that they will be sorry for. Remember 7 years ago and look back at those 7 years and see where we are. Let us all ponder and pray before we go and vote with an open mind and an open heart. Don’t let anyone do your thinking for you. Remember the choice you make today or tomorrow will be upon your own head for the rest of your life. Some day we will all have to Report and tell the Lord all about these choices.

Pretty obvious that Rendell is trying to do this Clinton mind trick thing… sort of like when Bill said Jesse Jackson won SC too, or Hillary’s bit about “understanding the pride” of black voters. Clearly they want to (wink wink) signal to white voters that it’s time to circle the wagons. Why else would a high-level Clinton supporter say something that stupid?
The problem is that in 2008 we’re circling the wagons around Obama. For 95% of white dems., race is simply not an issue in this campaign. It’s just about who can lead us out of the mess Bush has made and restore our place in the world.
Look- their whole pyramid scheme of a political dynasty is collapsing. The Clintons should have some class on they way out so they’re not remembered like this.

I think he is right, the ethnic split, will be dangerous for the democratic party. As exit polls confirm, the Democratic voters are already divided along racial lines. Not only between blacks and whites but also Latinos Let’s remember Nevada’s Latinos,Defying their union, which had endorsed Obama, a procession of Latinos maids and short-order cooks headed to Hillary Clinton’s corner.
The risk for the eventual nominee, whether Clinton or Obama, is that an alienated group might tend to stay at home in November — or, worse, send a bundle of votes to a Republican like John McCain. If that happens, the White House could be lost.

HRC will take this country forward, and we will be so much better for it. Obama can not beat McCain in Nov. When the R’s can cross over and vote in these elections that we have had, it doesnt take much to know what is happening out there. There is no way they will vote for Obama in Nov. I have live in Pa for over ten years and the Gov is right, the football player who ran against him should tell you the whole story. The vote was not close, he is a very smart man and i think he would have made a good gov but the cards were stacked against him in Pa. We need to vote who we think will get this country going in the right direction again and i think is HRC

All along I thought that people are people: prejudiced, racist and scared to death to bring about a revolutionary change. And I thought that most white people in America are not different than their counterparts elsewhere. Today, I have a feeling that I could be wrong. The overwhelming support that the young white voters gave to Obama only means that this generation has learnt the hard way that racial hatred will not going to work for the benifit of the country in the long run. I salute this generation for the courage they are showing and believe me, the whole world will stand up in applause for them. The only thing I have for the Penn governor is PITTY. After all he probably learnt from family folks as a growing child about the mythical white supremacy. I could have forgiven him if he were just a common man like me. But NO, being the head of a state, he statement definitely warrants an apology especially if he really wants his frieng Hillary to be in the race.

If people don’t like what the governor of Pennsylvania said that’s too bad. The truth is the truth and some people don’t like to hear the truth they like to hear lies better. I hope the governor is right because I am with him all the way. I believe that you should say what you feel regardless of the fact. I am voting for Hillary for the same reason the governor endorsed her. I do not want Obama in the white house. This is not the time for him and this young generation is dumber than dumb because they can’t read thru him. How did they ever go to college. I can read him like a book without the cover. He is very cunning in his speeches and tries to act like MLK but MLK was educated compared to Obama. Obama wants to be president because he wants to show that a black man can win. He doesn’t know on thing about foreign policy or issues. Why do you think he made that slogan Yes We Can? He means we can elect a black president. He is not interested in the job that comes second and I can see a big disaster in America if he is elected.
Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | February 13, 2008, 1:09 am 1:09 am
What a shame, Ed Rendell was elected mayor of Philadelphia on the backs of thousands of black voters. Yes of course some people might not vote for Obama because he is black the same way some men wont vote for Hillary because she is a woman but you dont hear Obama supporters making that a reason for men to vote for him. Its a sad day in America when a sitting Governor talks this way. So sad indeed.
Posted by: TR | February 13, 2008, 1:13 am 1:13 am
PD: Don’t pity the governor pity America if Obama is elected. If you think this country is in a mess you haven’t seen anything yet. America would be in the worst disaster in history. Electing a president that’s lucky he can count 2 and 2 equals 4. That’s the trouble with this young generation they don’t have the brains to sit on or a window to throw them out of. Get real and wake up. Obama may have went to college but it certainly didn’t make him smart. He was interviewed on foreign policy and he answered every question wrong. I am with the governor. He made the right statement. Right is right and wrong is wrong and he is right. He knows his state better than you do and I am sure PA is going to listen to him. Hillary will win Texas and the large Latino vote. All she has to do then is capture Ohio and PA like she did Feb. 5th. Those were the states that Obama wanted to win but he won the tooth and nail states. Get a grip and face reality.
Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | February 13, 2008, 1:17 am 1:17 am
Let me go on record to say that Obama won at least 95% if not 100% of the black vote which means they did not vote for Hillary. Then what’s the matter with our white people that they did not vote for their own. It too states like NY, NJ, and CA plus AR, AZ and Tenn to do the job. Texas will vote for Hillary but PA and Ohio should do the same as NY and vote Hillary also. I agree with the governor and hope he is absolutely correct.

Racism isn’t the issue here, because Barack Obama is nothing but a glorified George W Bush with a tan, a speechwriter and a motivational course. That’s all.
Man, you Obamajugend will be so disappointed when the cult collapses.

Lynn Swann? Ed Rendell? Who knows? Maybe if each had been taller, shorter, heavier, thinner, younger, older, more hair, shorter hair, longer hair, wider-set eyes, different last name, different first name, different wife, different kids, different house – how on earth does anyone know how many points each of those might have changed? And who cares?
From what I’ve seen, the more Clinton supporters talk, the more damage they do their own candidate. So let us all be perfectly quiet now….

I don’t mind voting for an Afro-American, but can’t you guys do any better than delivering Barack Hussein Obama? Please tell me you’ve got better guys than that in your community.
A fake MLK trying to do a JFK might impress spoiled college kids, but do you seriously believe blue-collar workers in Ohio and Texas are stupid enough to believe in someone who doesn’t care about the details of foreign direct investments or foreign policy?
People have the right to know the fine print here, but all they hear is “Change” and “Hope”. That won’t pay the bills.
Posted by: Rick | February 13, 2008, 2:58 am 2:58 am
There is absolutely nothing– NOTHING– in what Rendell said that is racist. He made an observation that in his opinion about 5% (that is, 22%-17%) of the electorate in Pennsylvania has racist tendencies, That’s all he said. How is that racist? It is his opinion about how many people vote with a racist mindset. He is not supporting them, he is just saying they exist. Does anyone deny they exist? Would it be better to pretend they don’t exist? I thought we are supposed to talk about these things to get it out in the open.
I will vote for Obama if he wins. I will vote for Clinton if she wins. So should anyone who wants to improve the lives of middle class and poor people, black and white.

The time is now and the Govenor is going to be taken to school like the rest of America’s past, he will learn the true meaning of turning the page and he might even find himself on the wrong side of it. Like America, his state has an opportunity for change too. America is falling in love, stop playing hard to get, this is not about division, it’s about addition.

It would be a great devastation to the United States if Barack Obama wins the Democratic nomination. Will America ever learn their lesson? Why do we continue to elect people with absolutly no experience or direction for our country. Of course our country needs change, anyone who has lived in this country at all for the past eight years knows this but we need to elect someone who knows how to go about making change. Barack Obama has little to no experience when it comes to foreign policy and working with the leaders of struggling nations around the world. How about boosting our economy or improving our nations schools? Hillary Clinton has already served in the White House during one of the most successful presidencies that our nation has ever had the privlage of experiencing. C’mon America…isn’t she the obvious choice??

I guess the media is looking forward to focussing on a northern state who’s Govenor can express these racial feelings and endorse Hillary Clintons campaign at the same time. We need to put the Govenor, the Confederate Flag and Hillary in a museum exibit called the past. After reading this Democratic Govenor’s remarks, I’m very proud of the progress the south has made.

Rendell was NOT real popular in Pennsylvaina before this and wins elections by getting huge margins in Philly, his home base. He is up for re-election in 06, doesn’t look like he will be around much longer.
The funny thing is he doesn’t get a lot of the “conservatives whites” he knows so much about and now he has aleinated his liberal white and minority base. For someone who claims to know so much about demographics, he looks like an idiot.

Both Clinton and OBAMA represent DEMOCRAT. So we just want someone who can get the job done. Both of them are capable to lead this country in the right direction. I am just interested for DEMOCRAT to win the general election in November.I think is very tupid indeed to hear from people that BARACK OBAMA is inexperience. It doesn’t make any sense at all. He has been working as a community organizer, taught at the university and he is in the senate almost four years now. OBAMA ’08 .

One wonders if this be the personal criteria the good Governor used to endorse Hillary? Ugh.
The Clintons don’t know the meaning of ethics– a very essential ingredient to leadership. Iowa didn’t count (that had to hurt for all those hard working Clinton volunteers), SC was only about race (so why all the southern white Obama supporters) and caucasses don’t accurately reflect a nation. What Gov. Rendell said is stupid and far from the truth. He labels Pennsylvanians with something they didn’t ask for.
Lynn Swann, the Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Steeler and sports commentator didn’t have enough political fame to win the Governor’s chair.
It wasn’t because of Swann’s skin color alone, the Governor has to give voters more credit to choose than that.
He’s a supporter of Hillary, her campaign is going to be pissed!
States with more whites than Pennsylvania has, Obama is winning. That political block is being voted over. Idaho and Utah. Iowa and Nebraska. Kansas and Maine.
It’s a stupid statement said in a flippant way and Rendell shows his ego is flawed.
Pennsylvanians should punish him with negative commentary and I believe they will.
It will be a smackdown of his views when Obama wins Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvanians, how does it feel to have such an embarrassment for a governor? (I ask this with no sense of pride or gloating, since the governor of the state in which I live is under federal investigation for all sorts of financial improprieties.) You realize, of course, that your “esteemed” governor has called you racists by implication, and that he must have an extremely low opinion of you. After having spent a very enjoyable week in Philadelphia and meeting quite a few very nice people, I think your governor couldn’t be more wrong or misguided. To borrow one of Jake’s favorite questions, what say you?

The is nothing wrong with the Gov statement he is right there are some whites that will not vote for Obama so what is the fuss about. On the other hand we have AA coming out in their numbers to vote for Obama because his war cry is “its out time now” or “our time has come”. Now whose time is he speaking about American time, Democratic time?. He does not explain but its the drive in the hidden message which is vote to put a black man as President, and your time will come. Then you have some that say the black community need this as a role model to be the example for their young ones to turn around their lives, showing them they can achieve the highest position in the land. All these statements are not picked on as being racist so what is so difficult to understand in what this Gov is saying ?

Governor Rendell’s comments represent yet another cyinical attempt by Clinton machine politician to marginalize Senator Obama on the basis of racial divide. It is a shameful indication of a ruthless strategy by a member of the democratic party: the party of coalition. While this may be an underhanded way to attract certain voter groups in the short term ultimately it is a losing strategy for the democratic party.

It is clear that obama is exacerbating the racial tension in America. So much so that obama knows if he loses the race there will be more trouble and racial violence. He is too young to remember the 1960′s but he can always read about it.
Just what America needs.

Why all the bitterness about AA voting for Obama. He is half white so why does he get tossed in the “Black” bucket. Why can’t he be considered a white man?Shows you just were this country is.

So if a white woman does not vote for Obama she is racist? So what do you call all the blacks that are coming out to vote for Obama just because he is black and nothing more.

Wow! The worse kind of racism is the kind that pretends it isn’t. Your statement that blacks have no other reason to vote for Obama than the color of his skin is ignorant! You have swallowed Hillary’s spoon feeding misinformation hook line and sinker.
Ship Ahoy!

Surprise…another divisive Clinton surrogate.
There are people who will not vote for Hillary because she is a woman, but Ed Rendell does not want to mention that.
Obama is a uniter and I am sure some racist people have voted for him because he is the better candidate to change the way government plays a role in our lives. Imagine that!

If there was a poll of Af-Am to identify at least six things about Barack Obama with race not being one of them I would be willing to bet that the majority would not be able to identify more than three. Why? Because they are voting for him simply for the one reason they can identify. Can that fact be considered racist? Is this an indication that he is the best candidate for the job? That is really not an issue. It is however, irresponsible because ultimately, when he loses the we black people will still be at the end of the food chain. Whether Rendell will be considered a racist for stating the truth is really a matter of peception. I don’t get offended by a statement of truth. I am offended by the denial of racism because that is what continues to promote it. It Barack what a white candidate no way would he be where he is now. After all John Edwards was more qualified and express more concern for more people regardless of race than BO has.
