Real ‘Work’? Clinton Swipes at Chelsea’s Profession

ABC News’ Jennifer Parker and Eloise Harper Report: Sen. Hillary Clinton took a swipe at her daughter’s profession today at an economic roundtable discussion at a restaurant in Parma, Ohio, suggesting wealthy investment bankers and hedge fund managers on Wall Street aren’t doing real ‘work.’

The former first lady’s daughter, Chelsea Clinton, works for New York-based hedge fund Avenue Capital Group. She previously worked in New York for McKinsey & Company, her first job after graduating with her master’s degree from Oxford University.

"We also have to reward work more," Clinton told a small group of Ohio residents today. "and by that, I mean, I have people in New York working on Wall Street as investment managers, as hedge fund executives. Under the tax code, they can pay a lower percentage of their income in taxes on $50 million dollars, than a teacher, or a nurse, or a truck driver in Parma pays on $50,000. That’s very discouraging to people."

You just feel like, ‘wait a minute. I’m working as hard as I can.’ All those people you see in your law office. They’re working as hard as they can and they feel like they’re just getting further and further behind," Clinton said.

It’s not the first time Clinton has taken a swipe against her daughter’s profession. Campaigning in Wisconsin yesterday, Clinton railed against hedge funds as Chelsea sat off to the side.

"I saw a sign over here – someone has a t-shirt on, tax hedge fund dealers," Clinton said Monday, "well in this economy we are going to have a fair tax system again. A Wall Street investment manager, a hedge fund dealer, should not pay a lower percentage of taxes on his 50 million dollars worth of income.”

In 2006, Chelsea scolded her mother for telling an audience that young people "think work is a four-letter word." Clinton said daughter Chelsea called her to complain, arguing she does work hard and her friends work hard. Clinton later said she apologized to her daughter.

The line about investment fund and hedge fund managers has been introduced into Clinton’s talking points as she campaigns across the economically struggling state of Ohio.  Clinton is focusing her campaign on the delegate-rich states of Ohio and Texas voting March 4.

Anyone have a line on Team Clinton campaign $$$ coming from persons employed by hedge funds? I bet it dwarfs all other candidates.

The Gallup daily tracking poll Feb 16 to18 shows Clinton closing on Obama from 49%-42% to 46%-45%. Since the poll is based on 3 days polling, I estimate the Monday Feb 18 polling by Gallup, Hillary Clinton with 50% and Barack Obama with 41%.
A Hillary Clinton win in Wisconsin (or losing by less than 5%) may confirm her campaign was effective over the weekend as reflected by my estimate of the National Gallup poll on Monday.
A quote from The New York Times, Feb. 19, 1992:
“Gov. Bill Clinton of Arkansas was comfortably in second place at 26 percent and in a position to take his resilient candidacy on to the string of primaries in his native South.”
Celebrating today the comeback kid’s 16th anniversary by Bill Clinton in 1992, will history repeat with Hillary Clinton in 2008?

How many millions – of the $140m wasted in their campaign – did the Clintons suck out of Wall Street and hedgefunders ? Their hypocrisy is boundless.

Since when is it any surprise that Hilary “sold her sould” a long time ago. After the casualty she was relegated to (by the one-and-only Bill), we must understand that “she has to WIN” something in return for having stayed the aftermath. We can’t be hard on her for dropping to any level in order to rise back to the mountain tops. Hilary has always had her “eyes on the prize”, and there’s no riding quirtly into the sunset for her EVER. She “will be avenged” in the end.

Sour grape comments in this thread — Hillary is willing to stand up for workinig class people. She has done so her whole life. This is not just recycled rhetoric from the Patrick…errr….Obama campaign. She has a long and distinguished career of standing up for the less fortunate.

In his healthcare plan, Senator Obama proposes to dramatically lower health insurance costs in order to make it affordable, and to PROVIDE FINANCIAL SUPPORT to those who may have financial issues.
On the other hand, Senator Clinton proposes to dramatically lower health insurance costs in order to make it affordable, and to PUNISH those who would fail to pay (see universal mandate).
Nevertheless, Senator Clinton insinuates that Senator Obama’s plan discards some Americans!
SHE WILL SAY ANYTHING, .. SHE WILL DO ANYTHING TO GET ELECTED.

WestCoastMessenger – Clinton has done what? Can you provide any specifics to back up your opinion? Are you speaking of her Senate record? One or two concrete examples would suffice.

Posted by: Kevin | February 19, 2008, 5:48 pm 5:48 pm

Westcoastmanager – Like Kevin, I also want to know what exactly Hillary has done for us. Almost everything major she’s been involved in has failed – most spectacularly, she wrecked our chances at getting health care reform in the 90s.
And, her senate career is undistinguished. Please, tell me all about her accomplishments.
And what’s this about being such a great candidate to take on the Republican Attack Machine? Since when has she ever faced a tough opponent (No, Lazio doesn’t count)? Only now, and guess what, the wheels are coming off. Feh.

Senator Clinton has “worked the night shift” (as she claims speciously in a new ad) about as much as George W. Bush has proven to be “a uniter, not a divider” and “a reformer with results.”

Add me to the list as well, WestCoast: What precisely ARE Mrs. Clinton’s “accomplishments,” and what IS her much-vaunted 35 years’ “experience”?
And for that matter, when will she be releasing her tax returns?

Posted by: Mark | February 19, 2008, 6:02 pm 6:02 pm

I suppose this is just me – perhaps the last person alive who happens to be pleased we won the Cold War – but when Clinton says “we also have to reward work more,” isn’t she taking another step away from traditional American perspectives?
I thought the jobs market rewarded our work. Those who want to advance are supposed to work hard, in a marketable job. In other words, we’re primarily responsible for ourselves, and our own income.
Sure, there are exceptions – people who need help overcoming obstacles not of their making, or people who need help gaining equal access to opportunities. I don’t think many in either party is arguing for a complete dismantling of our current safety nets.
That’s all well and good, so long as its in a context of also not dismantling our fundamental American views on individualism, including individual responsibility. We’ve seen what happens to societies that lose their own sense of individualism, and they’re among the most dysfunctional economies – and arguably societies – on the planet.
Several notable examples of this recognize it in themselves, and are trying to re-introduce some sense of individualism – namely the Russians who are desperately trying to rebuild a capitalist economy, and the Chinese, who have somewhat successfully implemented free enterprise zones.

Won’t someone just make Bill and Hillary go away. I am so tired of their negativity. They don’t even know what their daughter does for a living nor appreciate the hypocrisy of claiming to be for blue collar workers when they haven’t driven their own car in probably thirty years! tHEY DON’T EVEN WRITE THEIR OWN BOOKS WHICH HAVE MADE THEM FILTHY RICH. They don’t even shop for themselves, they are an elite amongst the elite. Hillary comes from a spoiled and stress free environment, and while Bill had some real problems in his early life and overcame them, he makes hundreds of thousands of dollars making speeches [I guess words are worth something] He usually is just running around the world making millions for his libary selling his influence [ie. he's just a Presidential lobbyist] Enough with these two! MAKE THEM GO AWAY PLEASE!

She is so utterly shameless and craven; and still peddling class warfare when she has no clue what she’s talking about. Those hedge-fund banking types work INSANE hours. And contribute far more to the national economy in taxes than a blowhard Senator from New York.
I pray her presidential ambitions implode, forcing her to slink back here to New York where her cultish followers will mindlessly reelect her until she’s an embittered old Senator for life. Disgusting.

This speach is simply double talk for income and capital gains tax increases. She would never get elected if she just said plainly “I am going to raise your taxes.”
Also, it’s her view that she gets to “reward” and determine who keeps what through the power of governmental confiscation and redistribution, instead of the free market.
So, really, she should have just said, “I am going to decide who should get what in life, will tax you more and punish free enterprise.”

Does anyone doubt that Mrs. Clinton payed a lower percentage of income tax on the Millions she made last year too? (gee I wonder if that is why she is hiding her financial records). She could have paid more than she owed, the IRS will accept more taxes from anyone who is willing to pay them. Did she step and do what she claims is the right thing?
Will we ever know, or will she continue to hide the truth and mislead the American people.

To vote for Hillary because she is a woman is as specious as not voting for her because of her gender …
How about Michelle Obama for Vice President?

Hi Jason,
The hedge fund and private equity millionaires make all their money off of capital gains and dividends, which are taxed at 15%. Moreover, people stop paying Social Security and other payroll taxes for income above $102,000. Those two factors result in some of the wealthiest paying the least tax.

I do really understand all the excitement about obama, i was young once and believed everything I heard, but having lived through the last 3 decades of history I tend to listen more carefully, and ask questions. No tax breaks for everyone who sent jobs overseas…every car company? Every bank or financial company? Any global company no longer gets tax breaks here in the US, can we make it any easier for them to send even MORE jobs overseas?

Jason, for starters never fall prey to economically disingenuous arguments from political demagogues. General partners are taxed at a lower tax rate (capital gains instead of income) because the “carried interest” they earn is done so through risk capital and is a capital gain (i.e. if their investment fails, they don’t earn anything other than the income from their investment fees, so they actually are taxed at standard income tax rates for actual income, not capital gains). Of course Clinton nor Obama will never admit the truth on this because it doesn’t serve their populist message, shocking I know…

Here is what 6 years in the Senate got us from Clinton:
Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term – 6yrs. – and another year campaigning, has managed to author and pass into law – 20 – twenty pieces of legislation in her first six years.
These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress, but to save you trouble, I’ll post them here for you.
1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
6. Name post office after Jonn A. O’Shea.
7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men’s Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
11. Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men’s Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
12. Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.
13. Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.
15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty. Only five of Clinton’s bills are, more substantive. 16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11 18. Assist landmine victims in other countries.
19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.
There ya go – experience counts I guess.

I think this is hilarious. If anyone knows taxes, what Hillary is saying is a bunch of BS. As a CPA I prepare tax returns of all sorts and finally we picked up a hedge fund manager last year. Taxable income – 37M, Tax – 12M. That’s 32.4% average tax rate. In comparison to another client that had 28k in taxable income (50k in inome minus deductions), that paid $85 single dollars in tax due to child tax credits and energy credits. That’s less than 1%. So Hillary, where do you get your numbers from?
Democrats, please stop with the tax lies!!!!!

Why is who does what work even an issue? How hard you work has no direct effect on me. I add a modifier because it could be you are working hard to become an Oncologist. It could be that you will one day help me or someone I know. Indirectly your hard work helps pull the cart that keeps America strong. But to pit you against me to say that I’m being cheated so we must pull you down doesn’t help me in the end. Am I supposed to feel satisfied that the government got you for me? Equalized things? Our Justice system is supposed to be fair. All else is a crapshoot, as it should be. You want security? You want government to be your nanny?! You want Hilary to have your IRS file?! Well, the largest meat recall in America’s history happened this week. Another glaring example of government security. And the British rate of death for most forms of cancer is twice the rate of America’s under their universal/mandatory Hilary care. I’ll take Capitalism, Freedom and Independence first and foremost!

Why does it cost 2 million dollars a year to govern me? I don’t need that much governance; other businesses that can will move to a place where they are wanted, and they will take the jobs with them. Punish employers and they will leave. Congrats. In the hedge fund industry, we employ a tremendous number of people, who in turn support their families, and they are thankful we earn as much money as we do and employ them to assists us. It is a legal, ethical, and important part of the economy; even if you do not understand it, you need not demonize it or insits that I should pay millions per year to be a citizen. Besides, what do you think we do with the money we earn? Stuff it in a mattress? Everyone we purchase from is thankful for our success — they enjoy it with us. Every account we invest in provides someone with working capital for a new business venture. Punishing our work is backwards — it defeats your goal of full employement. Have you considered what your country would look like without business success? What if you tax away every profitable business? Are you building a country of opportunity or one of failure?

No Mike, that is not correct. Yes, people stop paying Social Security taxes after 97,500 but they are not paying less than anyone. All pay 6.25% (the employer matches). The big difference is the wealthy will not be eligible to draw SS when they retire because their retirement income will be too high.
If you want the rich to pay on more of their income they should be allowed to draw it when they retire.
How about we privatize it and we get OUR OWN money and stop paying for everyone else? This would allow us to pass it on to our kids and we would all be wealthier in retirement since the marke always does better than the < 1% the gubmint gets.

Jeff and Big Dog,
What you are referring to is the income tax rate, which does rise with income level. However, many of the Wall Street millionaires and billionaires, such as Warren Buffett, make virtually all of their money off of capital gains and dividends. This income is not taxed at the ordinary 35% rate, but rather at 15% simply because the income comes from capital gains or dividends.

Posted by: Lee | February 19, 2008, 7:48 pm 7:48 pm

Ken Jensen, actually DIVIDEND income is taxed twice, not CAPITAL GAINS income. The dividend is the resulting income paid to shareholders after the business has paid taxes on its earnings. A capital gain is the difference in the price of a security from the time it is originally purchased to the time it is ultimately sold (unless, of course, the security was shorted – that is, sold first, then purchased back in anticipation of a price decline.)

As someone who works like a dog in IT for decent wages, though nothing like what a hedge fund manager (or Chelsea Clinton) makes, I totally do not care what taxes others are paying, other than I believe we all should be paying much less as a percentage. Envy and discontent over someone else’s earnings is a poison that rots the soul.
Hillary’s and Obama’s class and income baiting are totally, completely unAmerican. In this country we are raised to be the best we can be. This “class envy” and socialist crap is deadly. I refuse to envy and hate that which I’ve love to be – rich. So would the hypocrites but they won’t admit it. I also refuse to vote for anyone whose main constituencies are the old, the poor, the stupid, the insane and the discontented.

Wealthy people who make their money off of capital gains pay this rate no matter how much money they earn. Go to the IRS website and check it out: http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc409.html

Posted by: Mike | February 19, 2008, 8:01 pm 8:01 pm

Idiotic. Hillary isn’t taking a “swipe” at Chelsea’s profession – unless advocating a fair tax is, suddenly, “swiping” at someone or their profession.
This is king-stupid idiocy of the very lowest order imaginable. Is Hillary a touch hypocritical, considering that she moves and breathes exclusively among the rich, many of whom are hedge-fund workers/managers, etc? Hell yes. But it’s only a touch hypocritical, not radically so, because Hillary’s saying two things distinctly here:
1. Teachers (as one example) make far too little
2. Teachers (again as one example) pay disproportionate taxes, when compared to the rich.
That Chelsea works in hedge funds means nothing in the scheme of this argument. Presumably, Chelsea could agree with her mother on these points without getting her feelings hurt. I think that absolutely could be the case. But I think it’s beyond ludicrous to state that Hillary was taking a dig at hedge fund managers, or that profession in general. Very, um, stupid, or.

Or these “jobs” just a payoff to buy access to hillary and perhaps a way to just funnel money?
Politics sometimes is just like pro wrestling. A lot of the fights are fake and everyone knows the posturing is all an act so there are no hard personal feelings. So hillary can act like she is attacking those who are paying her off and not really risk anything.

How can any sensible person argue that liberals like Clinton and Obama support the “working people?” I have been listening to this democrat crap for fifty years and it’s as hollow an argument today as it was back then. I mean, think about it. We get up and go to a job to earn money, right? The more money we make, the better off we are, right? So when liberals tax us more and more, how the hell does that help us?

Chris,
I would disagree that this is what Hillary was referring to. Hillary pegged Hedge Fund Managers, Wall Street Investment managers not paying taxes. She is doing what Democrats have done since the days of Ronald Reagan-Demonizing hard working successful business people to look good to the blue collar worker who remains the target of the democratic party. It has to be an ‘us versus them’ atmosphere or they cant parlay the votes (or so they think).

The top 10% or earners in this country pay 90% of the taxes.
Think what would happen if the top 10% revolted?
Also remember, the top 10% are paying for all the give-a-ways to “stimulate” the economy (read buy votes) but none of their money is going back to them.

This is why dems lose elections with most people. Why should you tax achievement at a higher rate?? You go to school for 4-8 years, earn a degree, go out into the world and make a good living and get punished for it? So the less I make the better off I am? According to dems it would seem so. If I try to reach a bit higher, say a six figure income and BAM here comes the dems tax machine to smack me back down to “my place”!

People seem to blame democrats for this but that the largest and most irresponsible program (from a cost/taxation point) came from a republican president and a republican controlled house/senate:
Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act 10-year estimate cost: $1.2 trillion
All the while cutting taxes for the rich and increasing irresponsible spending for our defense department for our which means our children and our children’s children will be paying this off.

Funny. I can’t fill up my gas tank based on a “percentage of my salary.” I can’t buy medicine based on a “percentage of my salary”. And I know doctors don’t take a “percentage of salary” for their services. So talking about “percentage of salary” as if it is some type of equity measure is stupid. The fact is the Top 1% of this country contributes 80% of the taxes. Tell you what. Let’s have a real “fair” system where we take the annual budget for 2009, divide it up by the 300 million people living in the country and send everyone the SAME bill. Cost to the cost causer. You think a rich person consumes more street light than a poor person? I think not.

Does no one understand how investing works?

I am an independent voter, ready to cast a ballot for anyone sincere and open and honest, with a track record I can admire, either in the public or private sector.
Hillary Clinton is the antithesis of all that I value (and seldom find) in the political arena. Now 65 years of age, I’m no longer voting very much. I dare say there are several people in my condominium building that I would trust and respect more than Hillary Clinton to do the work all of us should expect from a President — which is advancing the interests of the nation around the world, engaging in “service” to the citizens of this country instead of seeking personal power and aggrandizement —all the while articulating and demonstrating a concern for the well-being of all citizens.
Hillary is the near-perfect example, along with Bush, in how NOT to do that job.
Achievements? Someone is badly deluded.

Where do you get your statistics? As a real estate agent/broker let me explain to you that the AVERAGE real estate agent makes less than 20K per year and the average broker makes less than 50K per year. Don’t perpetuate the myth that everyone in real estate is a “Trump” millionaire. By the way most people in real estate are 1099-we buy our own health insurance, pay all our expenses, and work hard for our money. Actually lawyers are charging you $500 to “double check” all the hard work real estate brokers have put in on the frontside. Don’t single out groups of people based on the misperceptions that politicians exploit.

Not only do Wall Street people work long hours, they worked hard to get where they are. Most of them worked hard in high school to get into a good college. Worked hard in college to get into a good business school and worked hard in business school to get into a good job.
In addition, there is debt incurred for all that schooling.

I’m sure she tells each one of them that they’re the only one.

Let me get this straight, Hillary hasn’t done much as a senator and is bashing hedge funds. Barak hasn’t done anything substantial as a senator and get a pass. Both bash anyone who makes more than a rep or senator as being rich, though both have tax returns that dwarf their senate salary. Who is rich is subjective, anyone but a democrat who makes more than 185k is rich. Democrats are poor at that level because their trust funds don’t pay taxes.

Of course, when her opposition (“Mr. Platitude”) is saying that the way to stop “exporting” all those great jobs assembling toys is to jack up corporate income tax rates, as if that is going to get businesses to have more jobs in the U.S. (not to mention jacking up the tax on earned income to 60% between the payroll tax, federal income tax, state income tax, which will discourage work just like it does in Europe), maybe she’s not so bad. Or maybe we need to realize that McCain is the answer.

It’s a shame that Chelsey has been dragged through the mud with both her parents, but she is 27 years old. She should stand up for herself and not go along with her parents warped agenda.
With the Clinton regime we’ll see our healthcare costs sky rocket so the illegals get free health care. At the same time we may lose our gifted physicians and surgeons to other countries where they get paid for their services. In addition to a sharp rise in health care costs we’ll see a rise in taxes to accomodate the “Green Machine” so we can’t afford to heat or cool our homes. We may turn to being cave dwellers as our uneducated, ancient ancesters did.

It’s “Wall Street” and the financial markets that provide investments that ALLOW teachers, et al to retire with a nice nest egg. I have no sympathy for hedge funds, but they hire and pay ‘real’ people too. Accountants, tax professionals, secretaries, researchers, they also rent/lease office space — who in turn hires cleaning staff, mechanics, electricians, carpenters.
This class warfare stuff has got to stop.

Why aren’t students and audiences asking her about her employer and how they make their money. Talk about exploiting this downturn for profit and doing it for the mega rich. Gotta love the Clintons…hypocrisay knows no end with them. Check out Mark Lazary, the major Clinton backer that runs the fund. As an investment banker, we often talk about how other people with normal jobs don’t know what work is. When you go home at 5 or 6pm, we’re still at work. When you go to bed at midnight, we’re still at work. And sometimes, when you wake up the next morning at 6am, we’re still there. My coworkers and I work 90-120 hours per week (that’s 2-3 full time jobs worth of work). That’s 15+ hours per day, 7 days per week. Sure we get paid well, but we work more than twice as much as people who work “normal jobs.” We’re tired of being told by lazy politicians that we don’t work and somehow don’t deserve the money we make.

If people who devote their life to working with the tax code can’t agree on what it does and what it says and how taxes are calculated and paid, how can we trust what ANY politician says about taxes and who pays what?

What has she done for the working person ever? As First Lady of Arkansas, as First Lady of the US, as Senator–she has no record of it.
Has everyone else forgotten Whitewater, a land development deal she was involved in with her hubby and other buddies that, while technically not illegal certainly bordered on the unethical–not quite swindling from a legal standpoint but certainly from a moral one–she and her crew bilked many hard working people out of their life savings.

If you want the tax system to be fair, and save the “people” a lot of money, there needs to be a flat tax of 12%.
No deductions, no tax credits, no write offs. Whether you’re a popper or a prince, you pay 12% of what ever income you make from what ever source. Period.
At the end of the year, if you work for a company, you get a receipt of the income taxes paid to government. That’s your tax filing. No HR Block, no April 15th dead line, and best of all no IRS.
The progressive tax schedule is the most anti motivational tax code that I can think of.
How many of you out there work a lot of overtime? Do you like the government letting you have that 65% of the OT money you busted your butt to earn? I get it, I work harder, longer, and I get rewarded by having to pay more income taxes. Oh, and that’s right, I get to pay taxes on that money again when I spend it too, what a deal. And the same goes for the financial peep’s. Except alot of them don’t make hourly, they get paid salary, so again, they work their butts off to get ahead, and are rewarded similarly.
If the Clintons and the Obama’s were truly for the American People, they would not be pitting the rich, middle, and poor classes against each other, they would be making the tax burden fair, for the betterment of “our” country.

If you truly want a fair tax system then abolish the progressive taxes and make everyone pay a flat rate.

Posted by: adam russell | February 20, 2008, 12:10 am 12:10 am

There is a tax plan called the Fair Tax.
It would replace the federal income tax with a federal sales tax.
It would effectively eliminate the IRS.
Just think, no more: saving old receipts, buying tax software, tracking work miles, trying to figure out how much of you home you use for work, waiting all year to find out if your getting a refund or loosing your shirt, worrying that you filed correctly, 100s of billions of dollars (that could be in the economy) wasted doing taxes, investments based on tax shelters instead of progress, …
It would take power away from those in power, and give it back to you and I.
I think/hope we can get McCain to sign it.
I don’t think HRC or BHO would.
They call making the system even more complicated and confusing than it is now, fair.

“The hedge fund and private equity millionaires make all their money off of capital gains and dividends, which are taxed at 15%. Moreover, people stop paying Social Security and other payroll taxes for income above $102,000. Those two factors result in some of the wealthiest paying the least tax.”
I ran the numbers:
The hedge fund guy would pay $7.5 million in tax at 15% if he made $50 million.
Joe average employee would pay $17,500 in tax at 35% if he made $50,000.
It would take 11 employees making $50k a year paying taxes over their whole 40 year work life to equal the hedge fund guy paying taxes for one year. I think the rich deserve a discount for volume — they still pay a lot more. It might encourage them to make more! And I am not rich!

Hillary is doing damage control. Her people are fast! I saw this morning a post by a blogger Inspired Voter outlining how Hillary’s biggest donor ($100,000+) is Avenue Capital, which specializes in distressed debt AND how Chelsea works for the company. It implied there seems to be a contradiction with Hillary’s lashing out against Wall Street and her relationship with Avenue Capital. Now, I read this. Unbelievable.

Jim Alperson: You are dreaming, and, you have very little faith in your fellow man, and none in the system.
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE NAMES ARE GOING TO BE CHECKED (it takes a relatively short time to do so) and the violators will be prosecuted (and the votes will be removed).
In my own precinct, there were six Paulbots that showed up, having never voted before, and cast their votes for Ron Paul. I checked their names, addresses, and phone numbers against my precinct master list and ONLY TWO WERE VALID.
I have turned the four offending names over to the county auditor and the election commission. They are no longer “delegates.” The Ron Paul web site told them what to do once they got to the caucus; they neglected to tell them that they HAD TO BE REGISTERED TO VOTE, and THEY HAD TO LIVE IN THE PRECINCT.
Oh, that’s right, the Paulbots have been cheating (stuffing ballot boxes) and making duplicate phone calls to phone polls, and making duplicate entries to on-line polls, and buying tickets for non-existent voters, etc. for the past six months, in order to FORCE little old Ronnie Paul on the Republican delegates. In fact, we have been told that AMERICA WILL CEASE TO EXIST, if we don’t elect Ron Paul.
What a laugh! Men with lots more money and lots more charisma have failed to FORCE the voters to do anything.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I do not pay taxes, (I’m 100% Disabled Veteran with my disability pension,) and am no economist.
That said, I will not get into the tax issue.
But health care…
Anyone remember the week of ardent speeches of outrage at the conditions in the back-side barracks at Walter Reed? How about the years long fight the Vietnam Vets had to wage to get the complications from Agent Orange recognized and treated by the government? Or how the Vets returning from the first Gulf War had to fight for years to have the government recognize that the complications from Gulf War Syndrome were not simply imaginary, or worse from some in Washington and the Veteran’s and military health care system, (the beaurocrats, not the actual doctors, nurses, and techs who deal with the vets,) that it was some vast conspiracy by Veterans of that conflict to they’d all somehow made up just to get undeserved care and/or benefits?
(Hint: Google “acinetobacter” to see what neat little bacteria has been raging through our military hospitals, and is now hitting the VA and civilian medical system, and how the government is keeping very, very quiet about it.)
I just got home from a four month stay in the local VA hospital, (San Juan, Puerto Rico,) where I entered for required surgery to close a bedsore that refuses to heal. I went in healthy except for this open wound, (down to exposed bone,) and immediately contracted the first of several systemic infections, (including the above mentioned “acinetobacter”,) only to have the surgeon, (who, due rules created by the local hospital administration, is the ONLY doctor allowed to operate on these bedsores on spinal cord injured vets, and is an OUTSIDE surgeon contracted from his private practice to do so on ONE day each week at the busiest VA hospital in the system, and who canceled my surgery at literally the last minute because I dared to demand that he spend a few minutes to explain to me just what he was going to be doing in this surgery,) and am thus in the process of packing up to move back to my home state of New Mexico, and the VA Spinal Cord Injury center there, to get this surgery performed.
The Veteran’s Administration health care, (this IS Government health care,) is the ONLY place I’ve ever heard of where a pharmacist can change a doctor’s prescription to an alternate, (not a generic, but a different,) medication based on their opinion of what is best for patients they’ve never even laid eyes on, where administrators with absolutely NO medical experience can override doctor’s and therapist’s orders for certain prosthetics based on thier opinions that it’s not REALLY needed by the patient, again without ever laying eyes on the patient, and where doctors have to, at times, lie about their patients condition in order to get them the necessary medications, supplies, and prosthetics in order for their patients to receive that which they require.
The problems at Walter Reed are not isolated, and have not been solved with a few coats of paint and some new flooring. It is systemic throughout the government run Veteran’s Administration and Military health care system, and covered up by rules to discourage evidence of it leaking out, such as no pictures being allowed to be taken in the hospital, (for example of the cockroaches that would occasionally stroll across one of my meals,) and unspoken of punishments for whistleblowers, (such as suddenly finding appointments difficult or impossible to make, finding that chronic problems are suddenly and mysteriously no longer going to receive treatment, etc.)
As a political Moderate/Conservative, neither Hillary nor Obama appeal to me, but Hillary’s plan would obligate ALL American’s to sign up for government health care to one degree or another, with who knows what rules applying, (can you choose your own doctor, get a second opinion, or refuse treatment you know is doing more harm than good without risking future coverage for that health problem?,) which is a totalitarian approach denying American’s some of their most fundamental freedoms. Obama’s is pretty much the same, with the very notable and critical exception that one is free to choose whether to participate or not.
But the bottom line comes down to, once again, the Democratic candidates trying to force government run programs down the throats of Americans, where history has proven time and again that the private sector can provide far better quality at a lower overall cost with much better efficiency, and painting such totalitarian measures up with pretty rhetoric to make the gullible believe that it is in the best interest of themselves and the country to approve such policies.
If you want to see what Government run health care looks like, all you need do is visit your local VA/Military hospital, and get away from the areas easily available to the public, and onto the wards and regular wards, (as opposed to those for public display at, for example, Walter Reed,) and talk to the patients.
I will not promote any candidate in this election, as all have their glaring weaknesses, but encourage all to put in a little research before jumping on any “the government will provide you with …” rhetoric to see just what kind of deal you’re really signing up for.

this is an important comment by mrs. clinton as she is implying that the percentage of income, or AVERAGE tax rates people are paying is how we should be measuring what is “fair”. If average rates are what matters most, let’s just move to a flat or flatter tax system where all income is taxed at one or perhaps two “average” rates and scrap the ridiculous system we have today. and aboolish the irs while we’re at it.

Hillary will destroy the Democratic Party Nominee for President unless it her. It is time for the Clinton’s to go and leave America to leaders that care about the people not just themselves like the Clintons.
Imagine she attacks her own daughter’s profession if it will gain her a few votes.
Hillary has proven to be inept more everyday, first blowing through $100 million, having her husband make remarks that divided the electorate, failure to pursue white males and low populated states, and now remarks on her daughters job?

Funny Hillary made 10 million in the stock market with an investment of 10K and she says it is not work. Oh I guess it is thief. What I hate about Hillary is her stupid idea that she knows better, like not serving her own State as senator, but running off to a all the time dem-district. Funny how she thinks her experience in the White House is credit for work in the private sector yet Bill will not release her record. Funny that the people that help Bill get elected work for other candidates. Funny how the people who work with her in the White House are now Republicans. I guess when you are the Junior do nothing Senator of New York, it is easy to think people do not work for a living, ask anyone who has to pay the AMT at 50k next year. Thanks Hillary, for working so hard to spend my money. Idiot,.

DEBT INVESTMENT FIRM: CHELSEA EMPLOYER & LARGE CLINTON DONOR
* Hillary Clinton sends a hearty message about how she wants to help the American people with the mortgage crisis. However, her 27 year old daughter works at Avenue Capital in New York, a $12 billion hedge fund group. The founder is also a longtime Clinton donor.
This hedge fund company specializes in the “distressed debt market.” In other words, Avenue Capital Group profits from downturns in the economy and foreclosures and bankruptcies. Of the current mortgage market turmoil, Avenue Capital owner, Marc Lasry was quoted recently as saying it was simply “great” for business.
Click here to see some of the $115,000 worth of contributions given to Hillary Clinton’s Senate and Presidential campaigns from friends at Avenue Capital as listed by the Federal Election Commission.

Now maybe we have a clue why Hillary refuses to release her tax returns. I wonder how much is in their which would run counter to the spirit of her remarks? Chelsea working for the Hedge Fund Friends of Bill is the kind of ironic juxtaposition the Clintons specialize in.
Hillary and Bill simply do not care what other people think or feel. It is all about them, all the time. The notion that Hillary has been working tirelessly for the poor all these years is much like the Peron’s claim that they ruled Argentina on behalf of the little guy. It is theater, not reality. Perhaps we will yet hear Hillary sing “Don’t Cry For Me America”.

In response to Ken Jensen’s question, how can a hedge fund manager making $50 million pay a smaller percentage of their income in taxes than someone making $50,000? Capital gains. The hedge fund managers income does not come in the form of ordinary income. Nor does Warren Buffet’s for that matter. These situations are VERY few and far between, and is just populist rhetoric used by Democrats in the pursuit of the holy grail – income redistribution. Liberals tax policy is not based on sound economic theory. It’s based on social issues. Envy. If I can’t have something nice, neither can you. Increased capital gains rates will cause this economy to sink even further. Not that many years ago there was no real alternative to the dollar. Now we have the Euro. Smart money will simply find alternatives and move money offshore. You would be a fool to start any type of manufacturing or labor intensive business in this country.
Obama and Hillary supporters. Beware what you wish for. You may get it.

Now lots of people want to see proof of what Mrs. Clinton has accomplished in her political career – well, can some provide me with what Barry Obama has don exactly. Junior Washington Senator who started campaigning for President 1.5 years into his initial 2 year term. Where is Obama’s foreign affairs experience?, what is his domestic security plan? where his administrative/economic experience?, what exactly has he done? He’s never run a town, a city, a state, never owned a business and had to comprise a budget and meet a payroll (neither has Mrs. Clinton). Barry is an articulate speaker that makes people feel good about themselves, fills them with hope – its a nice sentiment BUT does that qualify you to get the largest administrative job in the world? I think not. This isn’t Willy Wonka – you don’t hand over the factory to some inexperienced kid. Barry fills people with a false sense of hope and change. Change from what to what exactly? Change isn’t always a good thing if its just for the sake of change. Not “politics as usual” Barry says – well, OK. Tell me how politics can be different from what its been for 200 years? He’s going to magically transform the political landscape purely with his charm and well chosen words? Reality Check Mr. Obama. Washington has a status quo and NO President can change that. Even Ronald Reagan had to cross the aisle a bit to get things done. If Barry thinks he can talk the despots and dictators of the world into behaving, we’re in deep doo-doo. Thats a very scary foreign and domestic security policy.

Hillary is an idiot if she thinks that people in the financial services and investment professions don’t do real work. Of course her only experience in that area was when she turned a $10,000 commodity trade into $100,000 some years ago. It’s no wonder, then, that she has a jaundiced view of the investment business. Her experience was based unpon an illegal, sleazy insider trading deal.

EO writes:
Since when do school teachers and truck drivers make 50k? Here in NC the starting salary for a school teacher is less than half of that…..
Please don’t believe the Obama class warfare rhetoric that people are doing so poorly these days. It just not true. We have redfined what it is to be a “have not”. Yes the starting salary may be that low but, as in every profession, you must work your way up the ladder over time to achieve a higher salary. There are many teachers who make more than 50k/year. They also are paid more if they have achieved higher levels of education (masters, etc.) It also depends upon the state in which they work.
Here is the most recent salary data as reported in the Greensboro News-Record:
North Carolina’s average teacher salary is $45,149, which is $3,814 below the national average…. the state aimed to raise the state’s average teacher salary to $52,266 a year by 2008. That would be about $60 more than what is projected to be the national average that year.
So currently the national average is about 49k soon to be >50k. Not too far off. This is by no means an amazing salary but I hope we don’t place such individuals in the category of “have nots”.

How many people in your law office who are complaining about the hedge fund managers and stock brokers are earning over $400 per hour for their work? I have a great idea, instead of commencing socialized, universal medicine, let’s start with some socialized, universal legal instead. I am certain average Joes like me could never afford your legal services…and if we had universal legal, we would never need universal medicine because medical legal fees would drop like an anchor and so would the cost of malpractice insurance and so would the cost of seeing the doctor.
The problem is over 95 percent of the idiots we put into congress and the senate are all happy members of the American Bar Association…just like Hillary and Barack! America, certainly we can do better than this. I just pray the next four years really means something positive for this country. Lord help us!

Just gotta love Clinton. Hard work? Sitting on the board of Walmart? I can just see Senator Clinton cleaning her own bathroom or washing her own dishes. Very unlikely. This is delicious. There is always “hope” in Obama. He wants us to place our “hope” in government to solve our financial, family, personal, and health problems. I even heard him say he wants to set a new course on energy last night. I guess that may mean he wants to burn down our cities for heat or something since he votes against nuclear power, drilling for new oil in our own country, new oil refineries, and clean coal initiatives. Just shut down those mean, evil oil companies and then we will have gasoline and energy to heat our homes. I hope for sanity to return to our country. How in the world can you have two completely unqualified senators so close to getting the Democrat nomination for President of the United States? I long for Jimmy Carter — he at least had a brain.

Chelsea Clinton works for a Hedge Fund Group? Now I don’t know exactly the kind of work she does, but if she’s a working stiff like everyone else, then shouldn’t she report to work every morning instead of running around the country trying to gin up support for her mother failing campaign?
Chelsea was brought into the company solely for her name and I’ll bet the girls never worked an honest day in her life.

Posted by: retiredcopper | February 20, 2008, 6:48 am 6:48 am

This is another fabrication of the Clintons- yes, technically a hedge fund manager may make, in a year, 50 million dollars, but its not real income unless he takes all of it out of the fund and puts it in his bank account at home. He could make this 50 million over a year, and the next day after he declares this “income” to the new Clinton-backed tax authority, lose 150 million in a fluke market crash. It doesn’t make sense to make people pay taxes on money thats only there on paper, not reality.

Hillary has big plans for Chelsea.
After she wins the presidency next fall, there will need to be someone to take her seat in the Senate.
An Oxford education, working for McKensey, Acme hedge fund and now being “pimped out” across the country by team Hillary is a great start for a young feminist in search of meaningful work.
God save the Democratic Party.

If Hillary is serious about helping people that do the “real work” she would work to lower their taxes and reduce government spending. What she is proposing doesn’t help them, it simply put more hurt on somebody else.

Yesterday Angel said:
“The Gallup daily tracking poll Feb 16 to18 shows Clinton closing on Obama from 49%-42% to 46%-45%.
Celebrating today the comeback kid’s 16th anniversary by Bill Clinton in 1992, will history repeat with Hillary Clinton in 2008?”

when there are tough issues to address (both domestic and foreign) will sir obama vote “present” as he has done many times as an IL senator. i also noticed that many republicans are voting for him in the primary as a means of pulling him forward to face Mcain. he is just not electable in any sense of the word.

Just know this: When Hill says a “fair tax” she means raising taxes on the rich. That is fine, but she never mentions lowering taxes on the middle class. And I don’t mean a family of six making $40,000 a year. Why not make everyones first $75,000 tax free. Single, married, whatever. Now that would be a fair tax. But why should they? It is easy to sheer the lesser sheep.

Hillary has admirably represented NY State in the US Senate. She is an accomplished professional woman (which you men just can’t tolerate), an intellectual and a victim of the dirty Right Wing Attackers. I can’t wait for her to be the first woman President and put things right.

hillary doesn’t care who she has to hurt, take down, or mow over to get to her objective. Her promises mean nothing – ask the people of NY. “I won’t run for president” hello, give me a break. As far as her tax break, I am sure it isn’t for the common people like us, only for those that have given something to hillary – and most of us just don’t fit that bill. I don’t hear anything about illegal immigration. This is one of the biggest reasons our taxes keep getting higher. We have to pay for all of the freebees these deadbeat illegals get. Don’t give me that they will do what we won’t. hog wash. they take away jobs from people that want an honest wage. however, I have digressed. hillary the time is now to step down graciously. can she do that? nah. it will be a blood bath if she loses the nomination. democrats have little choice, a socialist or an evil socialist. Making 50k single
6.25% social security tax (or 13.5 if self employed)
10% State taxes (fuel, sales, etc)
16% Income tax
It seems pretty close to 33% to me…
So how much disposable income does each one have? I mean percentage wise. I bet the wealthy have much more that isn’t not related to a house, food, transportation, retirement or health. Also how much does each actually contribute to the economy (not stocks and bonds, but to the actual taxable base).

This is absolutely, totally amazing. I have taken the time to read almost all of the comments and to say Hillary is the most disliked and hated politician in recent history is an understatement. Finally others are seeing her for what she is like so many of us have known all along. Now that she is facing the bright light of God’s flashlight, her true self is in focus. But, will all of those who are shining the bright light on Hillary do the same for the messiah, Barack Obama? Will the false prophet be exposed before it is too late or will we have to discover under buyer’s remorse the fact that a hollow shell was elected and when his rhetoric of reaching across the aisle does not mean he is willing to compromise or involve Republicans but simply to bring them to his way of thinking?
Will he be willing to make the hard decisions when it comes to protecting this country? What would Mr. Obama have done on 9/11? What would have been his response? Get on a plane and visit Osama in his cave and ask forgiveness for our very existence? I guess his vast experience would have guided him through the maze of diplomacy. Or maybe he could have sent his advisor who is a virulent anti-Israel activist to negotiate with Osama.
I don’t like McCain but after you clear away the tons of BS from both sides, he has the least amount still sticking to his skin. Not much reason to vote for the man but at least it’s something.

Yeah, making around $250K per year, like she was at the Rose Law Firm. “Regular” people don’t work in law firms, and they don’t make a quarter of a million a year.
Hillary trying to say she is fighting for the little guy is a farce, and I believe even some of the lefties are starting to realize what we righties have knonw for nearly 2 decades (on the national level): Hillary is a big-time hypocrite who is in it for her own benefit, “POWER”. For 30 years she has had ACCESS to power (through her husband), and now she wants to wield the power HERSELF.
P.S. Ronald, you should ALWAYS count Social Security tax as the 13% number. Just because your employee pays it for you, that is money that could otherwise have been in your paycheck. You are indeed paying the full amount, self-employed or not.

He is hawkish and just spoiling for more war (Iran) and this country has to start rebuilding bridges that the Bush & Co. have torn down. Enemies cannot stay enemies forever. That said, Obama will go after those who have attacked our country and they will pay for all the Americans they have killed.
The point is Obama isn’t looking to start new fights or prolong ones that Bush lied to get us into.

Hilary is without a doubt, the “Say anything to get elected candidate”. I’m glad to see that a vast majority or Americans see just how transparent she really is. Obama, is a refreshing voice and face, but where does he stand on the issues? I think he needs to address them in detail or he will get derailed as the election draws closer. McCain? No, a powerful woman is the women i work with that have EARNED their way up the ladder. I have absolutely no problem with the fact that I answer everyday to a woman. I have respect for her. Hillary could not even get upper NY state economy back on track (another failed promise of her initial Senate campaign). She has a failed track record that includes NYS and her healthcare failure. Her latest campaign theme is the failed strategy of John Edwards. She does not have any core beliefs, they constantly change based on the political wind and strategy sessions. Obviously she is no leader. She is a person that would be hired to dig up dirt and smear somebody, that is her only talent.

Posted by: DMKL | February 20, 2008, 10:25 am 10:25 am

Hey Mikey – Yes, capital gains and dividends are taxed at 15% and people do stop paying Social Security etc at $102,000. But you are 100% wrong when you say that some of the wealthiest pay the least tax. Obviously, these people max out their SS tax, which is double what most people pay. But here’s a tough math question for you: What’s 15% of 50,000,000? That would be $7,500,000. Did you pay over $7,500,000 in taxes last year? Sounds like a lot more than most people pay. The TAX RATE is not the same thing as TAX LIABILITY.

Posted by: Adam | February 20, 2008, 10:48 am 10:48 am

Hillary is right. It is unfair. The $50K earner pays $8K or so in taxes.
The $50M earner pays $7.5M in taxex or 885 times more than the $50K earner.
Just remember, 50% of the population pays 97% of the taxes. The top 10% of Americans pays 70% of taxes. The top 5% pays 50% and the top 1% pays 35%. Yes that’s right, 1% of the population pays 35% of all federal taxes. And yet liberals like Hillary and Obama think that is unfair somehow.

Clinton told a small group of Ohio residents today. “and by that, I mean, I have people in New York working on Wall Street as investment managers, as hedge fund executives. Under the tax code, they can pay a lower percentage of their income in taxes on $50 million dollars, than a teacher, or a nurse, or a truck driver in Parma pays on $50,000. That’s very discouraging to people.”
What gets me is the media never challenges these Statements. People making 50 million will pay 37% of their taxes and those making 50k will pay 25% last I checked 37% was more then 25%..
Here is an idea, LOWER EVERYONE’S TAXES. Stop looking to punish achievement. Obama and Clinton need to be reminded, it is NOT THEIR MONEY. The money belongs to those who work for it.

Posted by: Cliff | February 20, 2008, 10:58 am 10:58 am

What Hillary is pointing out is that many on Wall Street receive their compensation in the form of Capital Gains, which has a lower tax rate than the honest workers who receive a salary which is taxed at higher Income rates. She is right to point out this swindle of the American people and to propose raising taxes on the cheaters. It figures that it takes a powerful woman to point out something so obvious.

Hillary stands up for working class people? what has she done? Has she actually started a company? Provided jobs for them? Use her own money to help people out? The Clintons talk about how wealthy they are but I never hear them helping people financially. Typical democrats, they love to help but not with their own money. Don’t give me this crap that we are hard working people. Most successful business people don’t work 40 hour weeks. So if they make more money than you don’t freaking complain. You also have the same opportunities as they do. Hillary offers dependency on government which is not a good solution. Whatever happened to having dreams? reaching for your goals?
This is the land of opportunity and as a LEGAL immigrant I can attest to that. I came to this country almost 17 years ago with $100 in my pocket and worked my butt off to achieve the things I have. I didn’t need the government or hand outs. I’ve been working 60+ hour weeks since I got to this country and when you do work hard you do get rewarded. I rather have my dignity than to expect the government to give me stuff because I am a minority. No body owns you anything. You have to work and take care of yourself.

That Bill and Hilary are the recipients of massive hedge fund money and take every advantage the tax code offers elites like themselves while she’s speaking out of the other side of her mouth on the campaign trail is exactly why she’s losing! It is all about class warfare. The Clintons are for it because most of the Democrats want income equality and the only way to do it is through wealth transfer via taxation. One of the biggest ripoffs in our country is the taxation of social security benefits. Wait until you retire you numbskulls and think that your days of working for the government are over. I highly doubt that someone who made $50 million pays a lower tax percentage than someone who made $50,000. Just because Hill says it doesn’t make it true. The top 50% of wage earners in this country pay 97% of all income tax collected. “The rich pay no taxes” is a myth. Poor people pay hardly any taxes at all.

YOU’VE spread more poison around this morning than all other posters put together. No elections were stolen. The Supreme Court (including Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Sandra Day O’Connor) upheld the validity of the vote. Get over it and take the Gore/Lieberman sticker off your car (besides, they’re both MEN… eeeyouuuu). Plenty of women supported the decision to go to war in Iraq and plenty of mothers support their sons (and daughters) who are over there trying to establish peace. Maybe you’ve forgotten the stories about Saddam Hussein and his sons maintaining “rape rooms.” If ever a man deserved to be taken out, it was him. No oil has been stolen to my knowledge, otherwise I shouldn’t be paying $3.00/gallon at the pump. Finally, plenty of women have “enriched their cronies”, not the least of which is YOUR CANDIDATE.

I don’t paticularly like McCain;however, if we choose either Democratic candidate we are in for increased taxes and inadequate health care. One must ask why so many Canadians come to the United States for health care. The reason is our health care is superior compared to Canada’s.People having Socialized Medicine not only pay some of the Worlds highest taxes, but are placed on waiting lists months long for even the simplest of procedures. Being in the health care industry for 26 years, much of the outrageous costs is frivilous lawsuits and unrealistic government regulations on the industry which are passed onto the consumer. The democrats have dreams as did Stalin and Lenin which overtime proved Socialism of any sort does not work.

ok, NYLIB, you’re obviously just trying to get under peoples skin. If you truely believe the things you are writing, I honestly would recommend therapy. What is the difference in your brand of sexism over a male who doesn’t believe a woman is capable of handling a job? There isn’t any! You just justify Your prejudices by claimin to be opressed. That is the problem with our world today. Everyone is a “victim” of some form of oppression. Get over it! Work hard and prove yourself. Don’t sit around wringing your hands waiting for someone ELSE to come fix all you woes. If you are truely a strong woman, there is no excuse for being a victim! Get over your hatred of men….that might be a real good place to start. You can never survive in a busiess environment if you cannot get along with the opposite sex. We would NEVER tolerate your swexism in my business.

Hedge fund managers not only pay taxes twice (once at the corporate rate) but there money is at risk of loss if they make wrong investments. Try investing. If you’re right you pay taxes. If you’re wrong, you only get to deduct $3000 per year on your taxes.

I have been hearing this statement for 20 years in politics. Is this only possible if you break the law? Is she lieing again? If this is true…Why Didn’t She and Bill fix this in there 8 years? I would love to know the truth on this claim.

Lets be clear how hedge fund managers are paid because there is a heck of a lot more taxes being shelled out than people think. They earn a fee for assets under management (typically around 1-2% and sometimes even less). This pretty much takes care of the expenses such as overhead, support staff and very expensive research capabilities. Not much left over so little tax is paid on this…Then there is the carry. This is typically 20% of the profits above a hurdle profit rate of return for the fund’s investors. Assuming that a hedge fund actually makes money, capital gains within the fund have to be paid at a rate that is determined based on how long the investment was held (not just this 15% crud people are freely throwing around).
What are the rules for capital gains? If an investment is exited within one year (which is not untypical of trading stock markets, currencies, futures, OTC derivatives and commodities) then capital gains will have to be paid at the MARGINAL TAX RATE, which is much higher than your average 50k Joe pays.
Beyond one year it is 15%.
While the founder of a hedge fund might have a lot of his or her own personal capital at risk in the fund, the majority of the professionals are paid handsomely through the carried interest as normal salary / bonus. They pay their taxes at their marginal tax rates, which I would venture to guess is much higher than that of your average blue collar worker in Ohio.
Couple this with the fact that if hedge fund founders started to liquidate their positions in their own funds, they would be signaling to their customers that they didn’t have a whole lot of faith in their investments which pretty much ties up their capital.
In summary, not only are capital gains taxes paid by the owvers of these funds, but the employees who run them also pay huge amounts of personal income tax at their own marginal tax brackets!

How much did she cry about these awful Wall Street types when she invested in cattle futures back in the 90s? How much is she crying now that Bill’s about to cash out of Burkle’s Yucaipa Cos. investment? He’s schedule to get like $20 million out of that deal. At least she’ll have some cash to console her when she’s sitting at home counting her millions when she loses the nomination. Maybe by that time we will have re-written the tax code and she and Bill can pony up some of the cash they’re raking in now to cover “their fair share.”

NYLIb- “Hillary has admirably represented NY State in the US Senate.”
Uh, the state is the people, not the lump of land we live on. Steadily diminishing population notwithstanding.
She certainly represents the locals in upstate well. Good thing each and every time she was present in the senate to vote down a military budget. This way she can ‘save the day’ by keeping Niagara Falls airbase open even though it was being closed due to her voting record.
I’m still waiting on her promise to bring 20,000 jobs to upstate- that part of NY that you people down in NYC don’t seem to think exists.
Then again, NY State has been shorted for years on federal funding for healthcare, and she hasn’t said a single peep about that. Gotta wonder how somebody pushing for nationalized healthcare would let that fall off the map.

Posted by: Jeff in Niagara Falls | February 20, 2008, 1:31 pm 1:31 pm

So, NY Lib, let me get this right.
With your anointed woman leading the EXECUTIVE branch, women won’t have to deal with the JUDICIAL branch? Will she actually fire them like the White House Travel Office or will she just tell women to ignore what the courts say? She’ll have to make sure only female governors are elected to make that plan carry down to state, county and municipal courts too. Of course, if that doesn’t happen, she could just make it happen, say, in New York. Then women could go there for justice. Kind of like a Las Vegas wedding. Or a Mexican divorce.
Have you vetted this idea with Mark Penn?

A blue collar worker with two kids has to make almost 40000 a year before he will pay one dime in federal tax. Every dime witheld from his check will be refunded when the exemptions and child tax credits are figured up. The more children, the more money you can make and pay no federal tax. There isn’t any hedge fund manager paying 0% taxes. This is the biggest LIE and so many stupid americans believe it everytime Hillary says it. I am more convinced then ever that this country is in real trouble because most americans are just plain stupid. Hillary and Obama are counting on that stupidity!!

I have spent most of the day off and on reading the comments posted here. Some of them are very well thought out and informative, others are, well nothing more than drivel and bs.
NYLib I just have a couple of questions for you: What year of college are you currently in and what is your major?
Ok, here is my take:
If Hillary gets in the WH, we are screwed period. National Health Care will destroy our Health Care field. Do you really want beaurcrats deciding what treatment you need or what meds you need to take? Thats what will happen. As one poster mentioned earlier about the VA Health Care system, it sucks in general. I am also a disabled vet, not 100% but enough that I had to deal with the local VA Clinic and Hospital enough to realize that my disability payments are NOT worth jeprodizing my health over. There are some good VA Hospitals, I have been to one when I lived in a diff state, but overall I would not send my worst enemy to the VA for anything.
Also if you think about it, how will she OR Obama pay for all of these new “programs” that they are promising??
TAXES will skyrocket, oh and dont even try the ending the war meme, because once you do that, what are you going to do with all of the veterans that will end up getting out of the service beacuse they are no longer needed??
Where are the jobs for them to transition to in order to support themselves or their families? You cry about high unenployment now, watch what happens if that would come to pass.
McCain is definetly NOT my first choice on the Republican side of the Aisle but he sure in the hell beats anything the Dems have to offer. I just hope and pray that McCain brings onboard a good and strong VP to help him out.

The Clintons, especially Hillary, never did ANYTHING for the working class people. Regarding her “talents”, the only real talent she posses is brainwashing millions into thinking she is not a crook. If Hillary is elected, she’ll screw up Healthcare even worse than she did during her first presidency (excuse me, I meant “Bill’s” presidency). She is not for the working class or anyone else. She is for herself and will do or say anything to get a vote. It boggles the mind that there are real people who would knowingly vote for her. Unbelievable. Keep drinking the kool aid. Problem is Obama and McCain are not much better. It is a real shame this is the best we can do at the Presidential level.

Oops,,my bad. Looking at the 2007 tax schedules, a blue collar worker with two kids can make more than 40000 and pay no tax. Stupid people definitely keep the democrats in power. 0% is a pretty good tax rate. I bet a lot of hedge fund managers would love to get their percentage under 30. Quick math for the stupid democrats out there.
Blue collar guy with two kids.
40000 per year.
-13600 standard exemptions
=26400
-10700 standard deduction
=15700 taxable income
7800 x .10
+7900 x .15
=1965 total tax owed
MINUS 1000 PER CHILD TAX CREDIT = 2000
1965-2000 = NEGATIVE NUMBER -35
You don’t pay one dime in federal taxes. If you have a mortgage big enough to itemize deductions, the numbers go even farther in your favor. Everybody needs to stop telling me how Bush cut taxes for the rich and soaked the blue collar worker. B#&&#%^t!!

Posted by: Rob | February 20, 2008, 2:01 pm 2:01 pm

Hillary says that lawyers work hard? There’s another whopper. Or maybe she was thinking about Whitewater, where she had to work hard to cover up her heavy involvent in the scheme, before saying she simply didn’t remember much about the deal for which she billed the Rose law firm for more than 80 hours of legal “work.” Each time she mentions her own profession it makes me remember those bad lawyer jokes.

Posted by: Diogenes | February 20, 2008, 2:04 pm 2:04 pm

Clinton is an idiot. She didn’t work as a First Lady, didn’t work (or even live in the state previously) as a NY senator, and now is bashing those that would employ her family and back her campaign. Politicians like her are the reason this country is becoming a 2nd rate nation. Everyone wants handouts and wants the hard-working and educated people to pay for their subsidies. Truly pathetic.
I have to agree with some of the comments above regarding investment bankers. Just to get where they are, they worked their asses off and performed at a high level through high school, college, and business school. Now that they are where they are, they are working double and triple the hours that most Americans do, often at a more intense workplace with higher pressure and risk. The rewards are justified, considering everything they sacrificed and achieved to get where they are, and now the politicians and the lazy want them to pay a higher tax and continue subsidizing others’ lifestyles?!?!
We need a FLAT TAX RATE! Only then will this country become a world class power again. In this scenario, the upper class will continue fostering a high achievement atmosphere, making investments and capital improvements, employing people, and supporting the arts and local community. The lower class will realize their handouts are done, and will now receive their “fair share” of what they put in.

Posted by: alex | February 20, 2008, 2:09 pm 2:09 pm

Let’s face it. Hilary never met a tax she did not love nor a government program she did not support. She believes in that nationalization of one of our biggest industries because to her all problems are best solved by government (a.k.a the collective). She believes in “wealth distribution” through taxation regardless that this cannot be achieved without reduction in prosperity for the general populace, and a loss of political and economic freedoms.

I have always loves this…….
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten
comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it
would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that’s what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every
day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the
owner threw them a curve. ‘Since you are all such good cu stomer s, he
said, ‘I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20. Drinks
for the ten now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the
first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. What
happens to the other six men – the paying customers? How could they
divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his ‘fair share?’
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted
that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would
each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested
that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same
amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.
And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh h now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued
to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to
compare their savings.
‘I only got a dollar out of the $20,’declared the sixth man. He pointed
to the tenth man,’ but he got $10!’
‘Yeah, that’s right,’ exclaimed the fifth man. ‘I only saved a dollar,
too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more than I!’
‘That’s true!!’ shouted the seventh man. ‘Why should he get $10 back
when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!’
‘Wait a minute,’ yelled the first four men in unison. ‘We didn’t get
anything at all. The system exploits the poor!’
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat
down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill,
they discovered something important.
They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the
bill!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our
tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most
benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being
wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might
start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

(response to a post quite a way up, didn’t care enough to catch the name) Okay, I will concede that when Bill C. was President we had one of the greatest economic expansions in history. But he had nothing to do with it, he just happened to be in the White House at the same time the internet created an entirely new type of commerce. Huge (and as we know now, very overblown) investments were made creating huge growth that could not be sustained, thus as is always the case with a bubble economy, came the burst. (kind of like the housing mess we are currently in). Clinton didn’t have anything to do with it, as Presidents typically have very little impact (good or bad) on the economy.
Next, even if Bill could be given credit for anything in his tenure, he isn’t running for president, Hillary is the one running. What has she done, nothing. She talks a lot, but her only experience is being the wife of a president. She has done nothing of substance as a Senator, so again she is just the wife of a politician. I believe it was Chris Rock that asked a question in response to Hillary’s experience claim, you don’t want your pilots wife flying your plane if her only qualification is being married to a pilot.

Hillary wants to make sure people in financial markets pay their fair share in taxes? That’s a switch. Where was that sentiment in 1979 when she was trading large contracts on cattle futures? Her trader, Robert Bone, was barred from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange for three years and his company fined $250,000 by the Exchange for violating margin and record-keeping rules. Tell me seriously that this intelligent woman didn’t know she only had $1,000 in her margin account. If she won’t release her tax statements for ’07, maybe she’ll release the ones from 1979. What? They’re locked up in Bill’s library with her other papers? Yup! Safe and sound!

It seems to me that taxing spending rather than income would level the playing field for all.
Who cares what the white-collar worker earns vs. the blue-collar worker vs. retiree? Taxes would be proportional to spending.
The argument about unfair taxes would go away. Under this system, there’s no need for corporate or personal income tax. It would be a simple and fair system.
History proves someone will eventually spend the money, so there’s no need for estate taxes either.
The best ideas are so simple! It’s so easy, even a bureaucratic caveman could do it!

The Clintons and the media count on the stupidity of the government educated to let them get away with inaccurate comparisons between different classes and professions. The class envy card is beginning to wear thin. It is marked, and I can see it coming well before it is played. People need to look at the difference between the capital gains taxes which are paid by the hedge funds and the personal income taxes of people. Hillary wants to “take” oil company money. They need to look at the percentage, not the amount. The oil companies don’t do all that well compared to ….makeup companies, for example. Who stands to lose if the oil companies are raided? The retirement funds of the teachers, firemen and other real people working hard to retire without too much reliance on social security. She knows exactly what she is doing.

The beer drinker analogy to the US taxation system written by a professor of Economics at a major american university restores my hope in how Economics is being taught in higher education. I only wish that a basic education in market driven economics were neccessary to obtain a HS diploma in our sorry excuse for a public (read taxpayer supported) education.
I am surprised he still has his job and teaching credentials with those views given the intolerant left-leaning slant of the modern university campus. Hope Springs Eternal.

Monicas ex-boyfriends wife also granted a federal earmark of $303,000 for a needle exchange program and condoms for prisoners. That was one of 261 earmarks according to Citizens Against Gov’t Waste for 2008 alone. Most if not all of the earmarks were in return for campaign contributions.

Get Real: I saw that post too on the economy under Clinton but now you’re bursting my belief balloon! You say Bill wasn’t responsible for our economic well-being? How could it not be so? Didn’t he wake up in the morning and say “Honey, I think the market should go up a tad this morning.” At cabinet meetings, didn’t they decide whether the GNP or trade deficit should go up or down?!?! Come on, now. You’re shaking my faith in Clintonian omnipotence!!!

If Hillary has all this “experience” of 35 years…then why did she vote for the war into Iraq. She can’t say if I would have known then what I know now, that is a lame excuse. Her 35 years should have kept her from making that mistake…OH wait she voted on it because if it went good she could have that in her back pocket for when she ran for president…if it went bad should could just blame it on someone else. She voted for the death of thousands as a gamble to look good on foreign policy if Iraq turned out, because she had zero understanding of the middle east/southwest asian theater otherwise. Just incase it went well she could hold that up as an appeal to the hawks…….

Billy Jeff reaped the benefits of the Internet surge and Reaganomics. Economics are trickledown. By the time BJ left office, the economy was sinking again. He did nothing for the economy. Drives me crazy that people give him credit for that.

Apparently, the ignorance of what a hedge fund actually is and what people do to run them stretches from the top down.
The terms “hedge fund dealer” and “hedgefunder” have no meaning at all and yet, nearly a day goes by after the original article was published, during which time the misunderstanding is perpetuated through misguided commentary before someone finally has the sensibility to identify this (20-Feb 10:11:46a)?
The media fuels these misperceptions in part, because its members also fail to understand, and worse, lack the initiative to do the work to clarify / editorialize these bogus characterizations.
Before spewing / perpetuating ignorance, get your facts straight, people and educate yourself on a growing industry that represents the last frontier in this country, where young people who are smart, driven and willing to work hard, can actually still realize the American dream without having to pander to the obsolete rules of baby boomers employed at underperforming corporations.

Posted by: LuxoCrat01 | February 20, 2008, 3:34 pm 3:34 pm

I don’t exactly see how Chelsea’s profession factors into all this. If indeed hedge fund managers don’t pay the same proportion of taxes that a teacher does, doesn’t that mean Hillary is not “showing favoritism?” I mean, if she came out and said hedge fund managers should be taxed less, some of you would be harping that Hillary is trying to lower taxes for people like her daughter. Damned if you do…

Nearly a decade of Reaganomics is what fueled the 90′s boom. Anyone who has lived long enough would know that it takes years to feel the effects of policy. Reagan’s tax cuts, his re-affirmation of Volker and appointment of Greenspan made it very easy for bubba to ride a perfect surplus storm. Clinton paddled out to a good wave during the right swell.

Posted by: Rob | February 20, 2008, 3:38 pm 3:38 pm

Bubba Fet,
Your post is confusing with double negatives but I see where you’re coming from and will let you know that people in the financial services industry do pay higher taxes on average than school teachers. This is especially true for us Wall Street types;) The only hedge fund types that have been widley known to evade their taxes are the Clinton cronies such as Marc Rich (the guy who Billy boy had to pardon while he was serving out his sentence in Switzerland).

Posted by: Rob | February 20, 2008, 3:51 pm 3:51 pm

LuxoCrat: Last American frontier of what? Nowhere do you mention actually DOING anything other than making tons of money. If you start making tons of money but you’re not actually making a product or selling a service then you are creating a bubble. Like the mortgage one that just burst. Baby boomers didn’t invent the rules of supply and demand. Like the rules of physics, I don’t think those rules ever become obsolete.

Oh, I’m voting for house and senate. Never fear about that. I’m truly a very happy person but the future looks bleak on whomever gets in on protecting this country that my father, hubby and son served to protect. That’s their job: to protect and defend the USA. Not institute government programs to help the slugs sit around reaping something for absolutely nothing.
Our church has a welfare program. You want food, you have to clean the church or do service somewhere to earn it. AND it isn’t long term by any means. A helping hand when you need it and then pull up your boot straps and earn a living like a real man does to support his family. I fast once a month and give that money to the church to help those people. I KNOW where my money goes. And the money is enough for 2 meals at a nice restaurant. How much does Hil and Bill give???? Hmmmmmm??????? Put your money where your mouth is, Clintons!

I would truly like to hear a sensible side to the argument for voting FOR the worst excuse for a presidential candidate I have seen in many a year!!
I know how she got where she is-we can’t figure out how someone could stay with a man who,by his own confession, chases any woman he can for the pure sex of it-then comes home to “roost” . We sort of expect that from respectable chickens-but God planned for people to do better and when they don’t-they WILL pay-even Bill and Hill!!!!

I hear you Jaycee56, our Country’s future does indeed look bleak with 3 liberals running. We’ll get change alright, for the worse but the USA is resilient and we’ll pull through. Whichever of these clowns gets elected, I highly doubt they’ll get a 2nd term. If McCain gets it, let’s hope he picks a good VP.

Posted by: Steve | February 20, 2008, 4:14 pm 4:14 pm

So what, big deal.
Bill Clinton remarked once that he wanted higher taxes on the rich because the economic impact on them was far less than on the poor, and he said “I’m rich so I know what I’m talking about”.
Only a Democrat would have such candor. Republicans guard their wealth like fanatics in comparison.

Thanks, Stephanie, I agree with you. It just gets ya down sometimes, chickadee! But we survived the Clintons so we can survive anything after that! I’m wondering if McCain will last till november even. He looks bad, but the pix I saw on Drudge of him hugging President Bush made me want to puke! That has got to be the stupidest photo I’ve ever seen. Even Bush looked uncomfortable. Pathetic. Oh, I like Bush but he isn’t a conservative by any means, but I think he is American’s protector. He truly fights evil.
I’ve never seen anything that says Bill Clinton can’t give his money away to help people. It’s HIS!! He can pay more to the IRS if he wants to or can donate it to someone or institution if he wants to. Nuuuuuu, he wants if for himself. Maybe he’ll leave it to his daughter.
As for me, both my kids are millionaires so I’m spending what I have and leaving none to them. They worked hard and made money so they don’t need mine. We made sure our kids could support themselves. We taught them the value of work and didn’t give them an option. They learned well. They are NOT getting an inheritance.

A worker earning $50 million pays a much higher percentage of earned income in taxes than someone earning $50,000. Furthermore the vast majority of taxes are paid by the very wealthiest earners. Sen Clinton’s claim is a deliberate falsehood probably designed to raise class envy.

Posted by: William Gigante | February 20, 2008, 4:40 pm 4:40 pm

Dear Rick Cain,
You speak like someone who has very little money and is upset about it, or has a buttload of money and didn’t earn it.
Bill only said that because it appeals to your type and gets votes. Him and his wife are notorious for financial scandal and associating with tax evaders. When you go out and bust your tail earning a fortune (like most small business people in America do), you see how fun it is to part with the money.
Clinton’s argument that high taxes on the rich has less of an economic impact on them than that of the poor is fundamentally flawed. Rich people live relatively more expensive lifestyles than poor people (in most cases) and therefore need more money to accomodate those lifestyles.

If HRC were any other woman, she would have faced criminal charges on several occasions.
If she were a conservative woman, the media drubbing of George Allen over “macaca” would pale in comparison to the excoriating treatment she would receive for her past. Just the mean, rude, and vicious things she’s done would alone be enough to sink her hopes as a Republican candidate. Add in the questionable ethics, obstruction of justice, evidence of crimes and hints of other crimes, and the press of all description would have a red-letter field day with her candidacy.
Have you EVER seen her get a tough question?
Have you EVER seen an interviewer rebuke her boilerplate and/or factually inaccurate responses to some of the rougher slow-pitch questions?
This notion of her being a great leader is just laughable. Just ask any of the long list of people who have seen her in action away from the cameras, and decided that enough was enough.

I am pretty discouraged at the choices.
Obama is sooooo liberal! Leagalize Marijana? Is this for himself? When he talks issues, his ideas are SOCIALIST, radical, BIG GOVERNMENT, High taxes, steal from the rich, give to the poor.
Hillary- Populist, FAKE & we’ve already had enough of Bill. Her statements in this article make NO SENSE! The people in the high tax bracket pay what 36%? and how much do the lower income wagers pay…. not 36… I’m thinking half that.

Okay, how about a little meat with my bun? How is he going to do this? He never has any details, just promises. He has promised a couple of trillion dollars worth of new spending. I suppose you all think that the rich are going to pay for it all. This is just classic liberal rhetoric. We’ve heard it many times before. Most of us realize that Robin Hood is a fairy tale. Everyone except democrats.

I believe Mrs. Clinton, as a women, is totally capable of filling the seat as our country’s leader base on her undeniable experience in politics. Unfortunately, I think her campaign strategies are not on track, there may be internal sabotage plots? But most of all, I think we still have a lot of people from the old school in this country and they don’t believe in such a big change (having the woman in the lead), and that’s very unfortunate. However, I believe that the time will come for those changes to happen, if not now, then later.

Get a grip and stop being so sexist, you’re not helping women and neither is she with her vile blubbering. As a woman, I’m embarrased by her.
I have the misfortune of having her as my Senator but not for long. I’m bailing on this nanny blue state like so many other taxpayers who are tired of enabling welfare mutts. Blue states have the highest taxes in the Union and it’s no coincidence. 1.5 million TAXPAYERS left NY last year alone.

How about showing us her tax returns? Nothing about this woman is genunine (how about that “I work the night shift” lie?). She’s only out for herself, and if this lowest low of trashing her own daughter’s profession for political gain doesn’t prove it, I don’t know what does. Take the blinders off folks. I would LOVE to have a woman in the white house. Just not this witch. I want an honest, hard working, genuine woman. Not some shreeking, foul-mouthed wench that rode her husbands coat-tails, that will do or say ANYTHING to obtain power(including selling her own daughter out or, Pimping her out, I guess). If you are so blind that you can’t see through this woman’s b.s., You’re just a lost cause. You must go out of your way to not recognize the deception this woman has tossed about for her entire life. I kind of find it ironic that us republicans are defending the very people that support Hillary. In fact I think a few posts here have shown that the hedge fund industry has made it clear (in terms of various donation amounts) that they are well in favor of their democratic party friends. That being said, we are still big enough to point out that what Hillary is saying is wrong!
What isn’t ironic is that candidates like Hillary and Obama will go around telling everyone what they want to hear. ANYTHING to get a vote.

It’s not Chelsea that Hillary is complaining about. Of course Chelsea is probably paying a hefty marginal rate on her six figures she’s earned by working long hours. Nope, it’s really hubby Bill, who, according to the Wall Street Journal is soon to make $20 million from his “investment” in Yucaipa Companies, run by his friend Ron Burkle.
It’s heart warming that Hillary wants to raise her taxes (assuming they file jointly?). Any guess on whether she’ll change the rate before or after the $20 mm comes through? Someone will have to cover the remainder of her failing campaign…

Clinton and Obama are true to their words when it comes to Big Govt, and Hand outs. A flat tax would be nice a 25% tax cut across the board, I mean rich people can afford a tax cut and so can everyone else, its not the govt fault if someone doesnt try to improve their life and get a education, get a good paying job through hard work, military is a excellent place to start at 18 if a kid doesnt have a goal, playing x-box all day is a waste people who are successful are the ones who get up early and go make a living a honest one by using their God given rights to be whatever they strive for. Im a Plumber and a good one I work 5 days a week 40 hrs and make great money honest money their are jobs out their just some people feel Big Brother govt needs to hand it to them and they are lazy. Socialism will never work people lose their soul when they feel that they are not worthy, and have some self respect to earn money and give their family a good life.My friends America needs to get our people to work and be productive and make our country a great place to live and send corporate America a message that we Americans can do the jobs that no one will do? and we as America stand as a fore father stood up against the idea that Royalitys have the power and they know whats best for us!!! The tax on a 50,000 single person’s tax return with no other income is $6,743.
On the other hand, the person with the 50,000,000 income would get no itemized deductions and no personal exemptions. In fact, a person making 1,000,000 has greatly reduced personal exemptions and itemized deductions.
People with high incomes:
1. Can’t deduct the interest on mortages larger than 1,000,000.
2. In most cases, can’t deduct rental property losses, even if they are real cash losses.
3. Get reduced or no exemptions.
4. Get reduced or no itemized deductions.
5. Are subject to the alternative minimum tax, one of the most unfair taxes I have ever seen.
How about this-
On a family of 6 with a 50,000 income, the tax using the standard deduction is 2,056.00, which is wiped out by a child tax credit, so the net tax liability is -0-. There is an additional child tax credit of 1,944 that is refundable, so the family pays -0- and gets back 1,944 that they never paid in. So, where’s the 12,500.00 tax liability for this family?
A woman with 4 dependent children can go to work & make 18K, pay no taxes & get back $5,099 more than she paid in. If she’s got a babysitting/drug dealer boyfriend living with her, he can take care of the kids & make a tax -free living selling drugs on the side……. unless he’s really smart, & then he can claim one of those three kids- without reducing his girlfriends’ refund-, and report 15,000 of his drug money as self employment income, thereby creating an earned income credit large enough to pay the self-employment taxes & still get back $1,700 that he never paid in.
The people getting really killed are the 2 income families with 125L-200K on a tax return. OUCH!!
Hillary is irresponsible making statements she hasn’t researched. It is because of people like her that we are handing out free lunch to the moochers at the expense of the working families. And…… if anyone thinks $7.5 million is not enough tax to pay on a $50,000,000 income, ask them- who the hell is going to create jobs in this country if there is a confiscatory tax because you happen to be smart enough and capitalistic enough to make the money? Tell them to read Atlas Shrugged & an entrepreneurial view of what life is really all about.

Dear Sir,
I’m the gentleman that Senator Clinton pointed at when she campaigned in Madison, Wisconsin on February 18, 2008. I was wearing a purple shirt and since the hedge fund dealers got us into the subprime mortgage mess, they should be talked about which I have since Rep. Tammy Baldwin has been in office in Wisconsin and she was on stage with Senator Clinton earlier that evening along with our State Senator Jon Erpenbach who I also know. Senator Clinton would make a great president.
Yours truly, LaVern

Actually, people in the higher income levels do pay much less in taxes because there are so many more deductions we can take and ways that we can get around giving the money to Uncle Sam. I am in that higher level. And I pay a lower percentage rate now as a VP than I did when I was a secretary.
I can Incorporate and take even more deductions that way or pay myself as an employee, give myself $70,000 non-taxable for my SEP-IRA retirement account every year, I can pay each of my children $20,000 per year as employees and then invest that money for them. Since they are employees, portions of their computers, vacations, are deductable. I can deduct rental properties and portions of my vacation home.
So even though I may pay a larger total tax amount than someone making 1/50 of what I do, I pay a smaller percentage rate because I can deduct so much off the top.

I would take Chelsea Clinton’s job for a month earning what she does during that month. By my estimate her monthly earnings come to about $30,000.00. After working for a month for that amount I could live well for a year!! It would be nice if they could take her job and divide it up among 10-12 ordinary Americans’. Think what that could do for our damaged economy. Chelsea would then have to take a pay-cut and live like an ordinary American and not a royal princess.

There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both boys and girls feel the impact of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.
