White House Blames Clintons for Document Delay
ABC News’ Rick Klein Reports: The White House on Wednesday blamed the Clintons for a month-long delay in the release of some 11,000 pages of records relating to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s years as first lady, despite Sen. Clinton’s contention at Tuesday night’s debate that she has "urged that the process [of releasing documents] be as quick as possible."
White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said that Clinton representatives have known since Jan. 31 that the documents — Hillary Clinton’s daily public schedule during her husband’s presidency — have been deemed ready for public release by the National Archives.
But under a November 2001 exectuive order, the White House can’t make them available to the public until approval is given by a designated representative of former President Bill Clinton.
"Presently, we have not received notice that the Clinton representative has reached a decision on the release or withholding of any of Mrs. Clinton’s schedules," Perino said, adding that the White House has not objected to approval of any of the more than 550,000 pages of documents released so far from the Clinton years.
"It is our intent and has been the practice to act on any requests as quickly as possible," Perino said.
On Tuesday, Clinton was asked about the backlog by debate moderator Tim Russert. She said she had urged both her husband’s representatives and the Bush administration to move as quickly as possible in releasing the records.
"I’ve urged that the process be as quick as possible," said Clinton, D-N.Y. "And I have urged that our end of it move as expeditiously as we can. Now, also, President Bush claims the right to look at anything that is released, and I would urge the Bush White House to move as quickly as possible."
Pressed by Russert whether, after a month, the documents could be sent to the White House for final review "immediately," Clinton responded: "As soon as we can, Tim. I’ve urged that, and I hope it will happen."
Perino said Wednesday that the backlog exists entirely on the Clintons’ end.
"There are none that are ripe for White House action that we know of," she said. "And, no, to my knowledge we have not been contacted by Mrs. Clinton or anyone else about moving more quickly with the review and release of Clinton material, specifically, her schedules."
UPDATE: In response to the comments from the White House, the Clinton Foundation issued this statement from Bruce Lindsey — the former president’s point person for reviewing documents for public release — indicating that the documents will be sent to the White House for final review within the next two weeks:
"To be clear, there is no delay. After a six month review, [the National Archives and Records Administration] finished the first step of the process of reviewing 11,000 pages of First Lady Hillary Clinton schedules on January 31, 2008. I have been reviewing those schedules and expect to complete that part of the process within the 45 day window allotted by NARA. More importantly, because of President Clinton’s commitment to make public a full record of his presidency, I will be recommending that NARA release more information than they currently have designated for release."

Let’s follow Obama’s lead from last night’s debate as we, too, take her “at her word” and assume that she has indeed tried to urge the federal bureaucracy to release those papers. However,if she is unsuccessful at making this happen, why should we believe that she will be able to get anything done in Washington?
Posted by: Liz Delfs | February 27, 2008, 1:36 pm 1:36 pm
OK HRC ball is in your court. This could turn the tide for you, get those papers out and let the reports write volumes on your experience before next Tuesday, hole a press conference about it. This is it, this is yoru moment to show how heavily your experience weighs in.

Well, if you are going to be in front of the national TV on a debate that you requested, get real and tell the truth. why would she lie publically and advertise herself that she is the best candidate? why can’t she reveal her tax return? she is trying to mislead people by trying to play the gender race over and over. she does not believe in anything. she cares about her ambition, going back to white house. Power hungry that is it.
Posted by: john smith | February 27, 2008, 1:41 pm 1:41 pm
Why are we wasting our time with this nonsense?
Why isn’t the American media doing its job and asking the important questions of BOTH candidates.
Why hasn’t Obama addressed the fact that there were straw donations made to his campaign by an Iraqi businessman?
Why hasn’t anyone asked about Obama’s lack of leadership in the Senate committee on European affairs that he chairs?
Why didn’t Tim Russert or Brian Williams press him on the monstrous things that Farrakhan has said about gay and white Americans?
Why didn’t Tim Russert or Brian Williams address the fact that it took Hillary Clinton to push Obama to answer the question about whether he REJECTED Farrakhan’s support or whether he would just pander to black Democrats?
Posted by: Alex | February 27, 2008, 1:45 pm 1:45 pm
In last debate, Clinton could not face the questions honestly. Here eyes not meeting Tim who raised about her tax returns and records of her. If she is nominee who needs her tax return and who is going to blow that.

It is no coincidence that Republicans are voting in open primaries for BHO, not because they like him. They don’t want her to be the nom. They are going to tear BHO apart if he is the nom. Yea, the Republicans say they would love for Hillary to get the nom., but they are not going to tell the truth, that is not part of their game plan. HILLARY 2008!

I think things do take a while to get done in govt.
What was going on with Tim Russert?? He appeared aggressive in the way he asked the questions. Brian Williams was calm, what happened to Russert all of a sudden?
Overall I thought the debate was great! I do believe some media coverage has been slanted towards helping Obama, even Stepanopoulos said he has seen this when talking on GMA today. Howard Kurtz of CNN also said the media is not scrutinizing Obama. Maybe we as consumers can encourage them to look closer at his record??
Posted by: fergie | February 27, 2008, 2:17 pm 2:17 pm
how can Obama be responsible of Louis Farakhan actions? two different people, two different ideologies and religions. he made it explicit last night that he has denounced him and rejected him. what else do you want. Making false accusations, this is the strength of Hillary supporters. he did not receive any money from an Iraqi businessman. when she loses, she cannot accept it. when she was the front runner at the beginning people did not through these kind of negative accusations on her. she is controlling and mean. be real.

I love all the questions after the 20th daggone debate….why can’t we smear Obama more, but what is the REAL issue?
Since you can’t find anything of substance, then you wish to create something. Who cares if its false?! The responses on Rezko apparently haven’t been enough, so you just keep pushing, for what? Until someone figures out how to effectively create something with Rezko, or anybody else for that matter, that you all can believe in?!?! And now we have Farrakhan…you, black man must denounce this other black man before we will vote for you….otherwise we will call you anti-semitic and a threat to jews everywhere. Apparently that is the only group of people actually worth anything…no other group could come close.
So let’s just keep beating him up with Rezko, beat him with Farrakhan, until someone changes a word in a sentence that will totally give new meaning in order to justify more distortions and making something stick!
But you call Obama sleazy…
Greed and Ignorance is killing this country.

More of her lies and deceit. She came across last night at the debate as though she was mad. Didn’t do her much good because Obama came right back at her – when she told him he was passing out fliers with untruths in them. She just can’t stand it when someone backs her into a corner with the truth. You just can’t trust Hillary. Then to get mad claiming that she is always the first one to answer a question. Did she ever think everyone is treating her with respect in placing her first as a woman. Which is more respect that she has given Obama. Obama stood up to her as usual and gave very good answers.

Sorry, but how hard is it to get those in order?
Enough lies, enough excuses and enough time wasted on a candidate that should never have been considered as a credible candidate for president. What a shame so many more worthy Democratic candidates were all but ignored because of the ‘Clinton brand’.

I must say her response to releasing her tax returns was that she is too busy right now, amuses the heck out of me. BUT she also said she is just doing what everyone else has before and waiting until the nomination.
Fall in line Hillary and do just like everyone else does. Same old same old. TAKE A STAND. DEFEND YOURSELF. SHOW YOUR RETURNS!!!

This is another tale of ‘classic Clinton politics’.
Hillary’s dishonesty and underhandedness can be traced back for years.
There is no surprise here — Hillary is cut from the same cloth as her lying, IMPEACHED from POTUS husband, Bill (“I did not have sexual relations with that woman”) Clinton. Hillary and Bill deserve each other, but the US cannot tolerate another Clinton who will surely embarrass the White House once again.
Anyone but Hillary, ’8.

It is blatantly obvious that Hillary is not motivated to release any records (i.e., records pertaining to her activities as first lady and records pertaining to her income taxes).
I’ve watched her respond to these questions multiple times and she always avoids answering the question and just makes reference to how there is a slow process involved. She never indicates any specific actions she has taken or would be willing to take to speed things up.
Plain and simple: SHE DOESN’T WANT HER RECORDS RELEASED AT ALL, because they contain content that she doesn’t want people to know about. Hillary Clinton does not care about holding to virtues of honesty and openness. She has made that clear beyond the shadow of any doubt.

I am still undecided, but it is ridiculous for the clintons to say the media is not focusing enough on Obama. Do we really think the clinton campaign can’t dig up something themselves and have Hillary actually bring it up during a debate that SHE requested. There is nothing and they know it. The more that I think of it, Hillary is passionate about getting power, not helping people. I’m going with Obama.

Jim Rod is correct on this one. Every candidate in both parties released their tax returns except HC. Think about that. Take off your HC suit just for a minute and focus. Be honest with yourself. Why would she with-hold that important information and stall. I am not saying she is as corrupt as Bush but she is sure acting like Bush. Adam just think about it.

Brian … I didn’t think Hillary was saying that the media doesn’t focus enough on BHO. I think they present him in a more favorable way without good reason. For instance, they seem to dig up unflattering pictures of her to show. They cover all his endorsements regardless if it is anyone that is important or not, and don’t mention the many endorsements Hillary has gotten. I could go on and on. If you really are undecided, start listening to the media objectively and you will notice the bias.

Clinton & Obama are both socialists trying to turn our country into a socialist regime…plain and simple. They both are for higher taxes, which was one driver of the American Revolution and both want to make us more like Europe. If memory serves me correctly, people fled Europe to North America because they were tired of European “management”. These two nimrods are opposite of everything the US was founded on…and people are eating it up!…”We need to be more like Europe…we need to be more like Europe…” I don’t get it! Who cares about a tax return? I haven’t even filed mine yet. I’ve been busy too. You people are grasping at straws. The difference between Hillary and every other candidate is that her spouse actually makes alot of money. If they filled jointly, then she would be releasing his info. too. He isn’t running for Pres. She is. Plus there are years and years of Clinton’s tax returns on file, just not this years yet. Nothing criminal is or has ever gone on with them too. Except maybe that Bill smoked a little pot now and then. If they had done something criminal, the Rush Limbaugh’s of the world would have put them in jail years ago. This is all just a bunch of smear tactics.

Heather: Did you see the picture of Obama wearing the turban? It was on every channel and the front page of the NY Post. The endorsement thing is easy to explain. She is not getting news worthy endorsements. Be honest and look at it objectively. Yesterday he was endorsed by Dodd. He is the first of the other candidates to pick someone. Today he was endorsed by Lewis a top civil rights fighter and congressman from Atlanta ( a friend of the Clintons) and super Delegate. She is just not getting that kind of traction. The popular Kennedy’s endorsed him and the lesser known Kennedy’s endorsed her. I am sure when and if she gets a big endorser they (the media) will print it. They want content, it is how they sell papers.

Why doesn’t the media ask Hillary about Norman Hsu (defrauded investors out of millions), Mark and Denise Rich (traded with Iran while they held US Hostages), Aaron Tonken (stole from Charities), Peter Paul (laundry list of crimes, including stealing a dead man’s identity and fleeing to Canada after violating probation on cocaine possession and fraud), Sant Chatwal (Bank Fraud) and others who have been staunch Clinton supporters for so long.
If anything, the media needs to go after her more.

I think the plan is not to show any records whether it be tax returns or White House daily schedule records until well after March 4th.
I have to side on the practice of transparency anything else doesn’t pass the smell test.

What’s the big deal with her releasing her tax returns? They will show what they always show, that they had shady deals with shady people. It’s always the same.
They despite that they have held the highest offices in the country, they will state they had no idea this one and that one were convicted felons. Their ignorant supporters will be all too willing to believe that somehow the Clinton’s couldn’t afford a $39.95 background check on someone they will do a multi-million dollar deal.
Then the Clinton’s will give back or donate a few thousand dollars and their supporters will think they are just the best couple since Ozzie and Harriet.
Anybody left supporting these liars after everything that has come to light in the last ten years really need some counseling.

Congress can bring charges against anyone of us for not telling the truth. However, we have members of congress promising everything for votes and expecting us to buy into the lies. We need to call them out for these lies. They said they want to help the people of Ohio to get their jobs back. They can not do that and allow our borders to be over run by illegals from Mexico and not stopping the flood of cash back to that country.

It just seems like if Hillary is in the White House, she’ll be an ineffective leader. She’s ineffectual at the simple matter of pushing documents through a review process.. There’s been so many excuses given from blaming her campaign manager to blaming the press. The way she’s handled this entire campaign.. I’m sorry but I can’t support her.

Why should she turn them over? Like some of the other poster’s said the media will just make something up. Why don’t they look into Senator Obama’s past? Rezko would be a great place to start.
I can’t wait until the general election so that Republicans expose Obama for the fraud that he is. But the sheeples will cry that it’s not fair the way Obama will be treated.

One answer as to how Barack Obama was going to pay for the house. I really have been doing a lot of digging. His book! “Obama, the new senator for Illinois, and his wife Michelle, were flush after signing a $1.69m publishing deal on his book, “The Audacity of Hope”.” Surely the date and amount can be verified? The couple paid $1.65m for the house, $300,000 less than the asking price, according to the Chicago Tribune. Rezko’s wife Rita purchased the adjacent lot, formerly the yard of the house, for $625,000, the full price because the Obamas did not want it. Later the Obamas bought a 10 ft. strip of it. The properties had been sitting for a while and the owners wanted both sold at the same time. Obama has admitted to being a bone-head about working with Rezko on getting his house! Rezko has made 46 candidate contributions to both parties to include both of the Bush Presidents, and to Gore and Kerry! The Clintons also arranged a deal for their house. The package that the cash-strapped First Family used to buy a $1.7 million house in Chappaqua, N.Y., is a clever and unusual piece of financial engineering designed to avoid tax and other pitfalls, real estate and financial specialists said today. The deal calls for Terry McAuliffe, President Clinton’s chief political fund-raiser, to personally supply $1.35 million in collateral that the lender, Bankers Trust Private Banking, could seize should the Clintons fail to make payments on a house costing more than three times what a Presidential salary could support. Bill Clinton of course had speaking engagements and deals lined up to pay for it. Has either Clinton or McCain brough up the Obama house deal? There are numerous sites on it and he has always given the same responses that can be verified. If they have not, then perhaps it is posters who keep bringing it up when the information is readily available by hitting numerous websites and do your own research.

the clintons are born liars. they lie right to your face and you take it.
the bushes are born liars. in this case, the bushes have no dog in the race. why would they care about keeping clinton documents unreleased? if you buy what hillary clinton is selling, you are gullible enough to vote for her. if you believe she is honest after all these years, you are too stupid to be considered for debate.
bush is an idiot. a horrible president- one of the worst. but why does he need to keep clinton files secret? why? he doesn’t. and if you think he is part of some grand conspiracy to help ‘destroy the clintons’ you are a fool and should avoid contact with the public. it is amazing how many people (women specifically, by the number posted on this board) buy hillary’s garbage, no matter what she sells, just because they are desperate to have a woman in the white house. for those supporting clinton, it’s not about character- they have none. it’s about having a ‘woman in the white house’, no matter what her credentials are. she has absolutely no experience other than failing in her health-care bid in ’94, then letting the insurance and pharmaceutical companies buy her off of the subject for 15 years. now, because of a campaign, she is for universal health care again. where were you for the last 15 years, hillary? while we suffered, you prospered. or, at least your bank account did. the clintons are self-absorbed, ambitious liars. the bushes are inept, selfish fools. enough of both.

Heather, I do think you are possibly missing the point when you say, “Who cares about a tax return? I haven’t even filed mine yet. I’ve been busy too.” Umm, as far as I know, you are not running for President of the United States, so there’s probably pretty minimal national interest in your tax return. HRC has quite a huge staff and her campaign has gone through money like water. It would be no effort at all to produce these records. The delay has nothing to do with being “too busy”. ALL the other candidates have released theirs, even John McCain, whose wife Cindy is Chairman of the Board of one of the country’s largest Anheuser Busch distributors (i.e. not poor). Don’t fool yourself. For all her talk of being completely “vetted”, Hillary is one secretive lady.
And as far as the records from her time as First Lady: If these would at all substantiate her claims of “experience”, she’d be waving them on TV like Obama’s fliers.
I’m no Bush fan, but at least Laura hasn’t spent 7 years laboring under the delusion that she’s the President too.

You are missing the point about the Obama house. According to the real estate agent, both the house and the lot had to be sold together. That was the deal. That’s why Rezko’s wife bought the lot. Obama lied on national TV when he stated his ties to Rezko amounted to 5 hours of legal work.

The Bush Administration’s account is more credible given that Hillary gave a similar waffle last night in regard to releasing her tax returns. She said she was busy. Please! All she’d have to do is call up her accountant and tell him/her to prepare a copy for public release. It’s not like Hillary Clinton is using TurboTax and preparing her own return. She is being blatantly dishonest.
Posted by: Erik | February 28, 2008, 12:51 am 12:51 am
You rabid Clinton haters and Obama worshipers need to get a grip and open your eyes. Europeans often wonder how we can be so stupid. Don’t you realize that much of what has seeped into your minds, and that you now take for the gospel truth, was planted by a right wing Republican controlled media. The Republicans were furious when they lost the White House to Bill Clinton, and even more enraged when he won the second term. From the beginning, the Republican attack machine stuck its fangs out and set out to destroy the Clintons. It’s amazing to me that so many people allow themselves to be duped. Now look at what’s happening with Obama. Look, I live in Chicago and I can tell you he’s no shining Knight. If you think the Rezko mess is bad (and that is not a fairy tale) check out what happened with Exelon. Exelon, the power company, was contaminating the drinking water of some good Illinois citizens with radioactive waste. To help them, Obama wrote a bill to force some governmental control over such dirty deeds. But guess what? Exelon lobbied and lobbied and lobbied Obama. And guess what? Obama kept rewriting the bill until all of the teeth were taken out of the bill. Now efforts to restrict radioactive contamination of the good folk’s drinking water is “voluntary” and the contamination continues. Oh, but the story doesn’t end there. Guess what Obama got? Over $200,000 in campaign contributions through Exelon. There’s a lot more. So shouldn’t you question all of the fuss about Clinton’s papers and tax return, which she always releases annually. Don’t you realize it’s a ruse to deflect attention away from some pretty serious allegations against Obama. Don’t you wonder why there has been so little national media attention to these allegations? Any other serious presidental contender would have been crucified, especially Hillary Clinton who has been savaged by the media. The plan was to hit her hard, treat Obama with kid gloves, and, thus, knock Hillary out of the race. The thinking was that when push comes to shove, Obama would be easier for the Republicans to beat in November. My question is: How can so many people in this country be so gullible?

I was quite “inspired” by Hillary’s solo chanting widely spreaded on the Internet, how hypnotizing,
“Yes we will. Yes we will. Yes we will….”
Here is what I am hearing people chanting back,
“Income tax return. Income tax return. Income tax return…”
“Release white house document. Release white house document. Release white house document. Release white house document…”

Might want to mention all Dubya’s ridiculous presidential decrees.
How bout a onstitutional ammendment banning this absurdity? Oh no that would take time out from sending emails claiming Barak is a “muslim” because his name sounds different.

Can anyone explain how Obama “got the media in his pocket”? I mean….how did THAT occur? Amazing if that IS the case…..he should be aplauded for having the forethought and capability to get the thousands upon thousands of media outlets to all conspire against Hillary. An AMAZING example of orginizational skills…! It’s gonna be Obama folks….time for YOU to get real now.

Hillary’s claims that she is the most qualified candidate for President, with 35 years of experience. I guess this is what one politely refers to as skirting the truth. Whether it is hidden behind skirts or pantsuits, Hillary offers embellished accounts of her experience when she was “co-president” in the W/H with Bill. Vague references to travel to foreign countries, secrecy, documents, escorts, all that intrigue sounds impressive. The bare truth, however, is that she has no validation to support her claims. Eight years as First Lady, visiting many countries, all expenses paid by taxpayers. No real objectives stated and met, no converts to democracy, no improvements in foreign policy, no real deals revealed. Well……then! No nothing, no vote, no belief, no way, no kidding.

Paul, no one is dissagreeing with anyone that I read – other than with Hillary’s statements – and they may have been an honest error on her part. The reply from the Clinton people to the White House statement did not contradict anything in that statement. It merely said, the approvals would be coming – they haven’t come yet – and that more documents would be released than were previously going to be. So, both the Clinton people and the White House agree that the documents have not been released and they are waiting on the 45 day alotment for the Clinton people to read through the docs – sadly after March 4 – to get the approvals done. So I don’t understand what you think the Clintons disputed about the White House statements. Now, her statements at the debate were false – but she may not have known that.

Mrs. Clinton, will you release your tax return and WH papers before the primary on Tuesday?”
“Well, Tim, I’ve urged my staff to act as expeditiously as possible.” “Well, Mrs. Clinton, you’ve had the papers for over a month. Will you release them before the primary?” “Well, Tim, I’ve asked my staff to release them as soon as possible.” Mrs. Clinton’s REAL answer::::”No”.

HRC and the former president filed a joint return. He is a former president and she a former first lady. Could it be that before their release of docs has something to do with them having to be scrutinizwd by Homeland security,FBI, the current president’s people, national security people, etc. since 911, a lot of things have changed in the dissemination of some information, and it could be their stuff just goes through a different kind of scrutiny. Just a thought. And they have made a lot of money since he was in the White House–she got an advance of 8 million $ on her book + residuals; I don’t think they’re hurting for money or anything is “sinister” in their income. They both get lots of money for speaking engagements–he especially. For me, their tax returns are a non issue. Just one more thing for the media to focus on the negative. Her coverage has been unfair to a degree I’ve not seen before since the media decided to anoint Sen Obama our next president. Does anyone seriously believe that his constant and favorable coverage by the media has nothing to do with his capability to rise as fast as he has , with absolutely no questions on substance on the issues and no questions about how he managed to rise so fast in the Chicago political machine, which we all know isn’t quite squeeky clean. Ah well–we’ll see how easy it will be for him to get all these things done that he’s promising, if and when he gets to the White House.

It only proves why I cannot trust the clinton’s. She will say anything to win. I am a woman and would love to vote for her but the big question is CAN THE AMERICAN PEOPLE TRUST HER? I think she have a lot of skeletons in her closet than any of the other candidates running for presidency. I am still undecided but quite sure I will vote for obama because he seems more fresh, honest and can unite the two parties for the betterment of all americans.

When my tax clients need a copy of their tax returns sent somewhere, they call me, I crank out the pages, and fax immediately. Takes about 5 minutes. Hillary must think we’re really dumb or something. All she has to do is call her accountant…she just doesn’t want the American people to see how much dough they’ve been raking in….and where it comes from.

Many of you have been asking “why should Hillary have to relase her tax returns?” or “what’s the big deal?”
Part the concern with this year’s tax returns goes back to the Clinton’s late 1970′s tax records that were not released until after the 1992 election. When you tell the truth, you never need to cover-up or hide anything or try and prove that integrity is intact. Certainly we know the media can jump on any “dry” facts and try to make them “juicy”. This is only made easier when there actually is a whiff of scandal. But in a situation like this, full disclosure and being upfront is preferable. Then at least we have the option of considering the candidates on the true facts rather than the hidden questions.
In a way, I feel badly for HRC: if she is telling the truth, and if anything in the documents (in the library) can add to her credibility, that would be frustrating. If that’s the case, she ought to be fighting tooth and nail to get it released.

What a shock. She lied again. How about that all of you Hillary supporters? Oh, I know, you just want to close your eyes to all of it. Go Obama!

Hmm, isn’t strange that Democrats do believe in Government doing things? and they are suppose to make it more convenient for us?
So why is it taking her so damn long to release these papers and her taxes? Will we have to wait forever for health care reform or for her to get anything done in the white house?

The Clintons supposedly have invested in a foreign outsourcing company. Could this be the reason for refusing to release their tax returns? It would definitely hurt her standing in OH & PA.

There must be a reason that Hillary is not revealing the tax return. There is no reason on Earth that she cannot make a brief phone call to her accountant and have a copy immediately. That was my first thought when I saw her lame excuses during the debate. We have an accountant and we are lower to middle class income and if we needed it, a phone call is all it takes. It would take less time for her to get those returns then it does to use the restroom. Give me a break. Isn’t she the one saying “Get real”? Well Hillary, until you “Get real” and be honest for the first time in your “35 years experience” How can anyone have faith in you and believe that you are the honest candidate that you want everyone to believe? What are you hiding? Obama released his tax return, why don’t you? At this point, it is probably a moot point anyway. The only honorable thing that she done in this race is stay with the sinking ship. Bravo! As a woman, I’m disgusted by her behavior and really don’t want a woman like her as the first woman president. She is a male politician in women’s clothing. Tears and self-pity are only a game. Personally I can’t wait until this is over. Watching her waffle and dodge questions and play dirty has just made her look bad. Give it up!
