Clinton Says Obama Muslim Rumor Not True “As Far As I Know”
Interesting item starting to circulate on the web tonight like on AndrewSullivan.com…
On 60 Minutes, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, was asked about rumors that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, is a Muslim.
She took a hardline stance against the rumor…then seemed to walk it back, injecting a note of ambivalence.
Watch it HERE.
Here’s how the exchange went.
STEVE KROFT: You don’t believe that Senator Obama’s a Muslim?
HILLARY CLINTON: Of course not. I mean that’s, you know, that, there is no basis for that. You know, I take him on the basis of what he says, and, you know, there isn’t any reason to doubt that.
KROFT: You said you take Sen. Obama at his word that he’s not a Muslim…
CLINTON: Right, right..
KROFT: …you don’t believe that he’s a Muslim.
CLINTON: No! No! Why would I? There’s nothing to base that on. As far as I know.
"As far as I know"?
To be fair, Clinton went on to say that having "been the target of so many ridiculous rumors… I have a great deal of sympathy for anybody who gets, you know, smeared with the kind of rumors that go on all the time."
That said, it’s the "as far as I know" that has some Obama supporters up in arms.
(Like the one who posted the clip on Youtube under the header: "Hillary Clinton Stokes False Rumors about Obama’s Faith".)
I guess the question is how would this look if the shoe were on the other foot.
Let’s try just one of any number of ridiculous anti-Clinton smears.
HYPOTHETICAL STEVE KROFT: You don’t believe that Senator Clinton killed Vince Foster?
HYPOTHETICAL BARACK OBAMA: Of course not. I mean that’s, you know, that, there is no basis for that. You know, I take her on the basis of what she says, and, you know, there isn’t any reason to doubt that.
HYPOTHETICAL KROFT: You said you take Sen. Clinton at her word that she didn’t kill Vince Foster…
HYPOTHETICAL OBAMA: Right, right..
HYPOTHETICAL KROFT: …you don’t believe that she killed Vince Foster.
HYPOTHETICAL OBAMA: No! No! Why would I? There’s nothing to base that on. As far as I know.
Hmm.
And lest we forget this context, from the perspective of Obama supporters: two Clinton campaign volunteer coordinators in Iowa were asked by the Clinton campaign to resign after it came out that they had circulated those insane Obama-is-a-Muslim-Manchurian-candidate emails.
What say you?

Just one more example of the tin ear Hillary Clinton has for what she herself says. I don’t think she meant to equivocate and yet…
I shudder to think what she might say to various world leaders if she were President.

Here is another article all who needs an answer to this question can check and come to their own conclusions!!!
On February 20, Firas Ahmad comments on “Our Obama Problem”
“But for many reasons, Muslims are one constituency Obama does not want to court. With a wink and a nod, Obama’s Muslim supporters continue to work for a candidate who cannot afford to wink back at them. Given his perceived “closeness” to Islam, and the fact that he shares a name with a former Iraqi dictator, it could be strategic suicide for the Obama campaign to vocally acknowledge organized Muslim support. At a time when endorsements are worn like badges of honor, no major candidate is looking for the Muslim vote.”

If you go through Obama’s writings, it appears that he is really an atheist who doesn’t subscribe to any of the world’s religions, feeling them to be “expressions of culture”. It sounds like he joined the church in Chicago for family reasons.
While such beliefs are very similar to my own, I think that they could end up causing him big trouble with some portions of the electorate if they are made broadly public.

Hillary’s response was clearly meant to perpetuate doubt. She nauseates me. It should have been a three word answer, instead Kroft had to ask her twice because he could not believe his ears.
The video which reveals her expressions and body language is worse than the transcript. Disgusting!

OBAMA’S BAD JUDGEMENTS:
1) lets pull out of Iraq now and go back in tomorrow.
2) lets bomb Pakistan without their consent if we find that alqeada is there….no considerations that Pakistan is a nuclear weapon owner
3) voted ‘present’ when most of his colleagues fought to avoid sex shops from being set up next to schools
4) voted no when his colleagues tried to cap the credit card companies from raising rates
5) voted for the Cheney energy bill that has pillaged the tax payers money w/o much returns
6) opted to send out fliers noting a quote that his opponent did not make
7) opted to partner up in a real estate deal with a man under investigation of political fixing and money laundering. 8) Opted to take over 100K in donations from the same man who was still under investigation for political fixing and money laundering.
9) Opted to sustain a spiritual counseling relationship with a pastor who had proclaimed that his hero is L Farrakhan who promotes hate against whites and Jews.
10) Opted to criticize opponents of having close proximity with lobbyist when he had regular basketball games and poker games with lobbyist while in the IL legislature. OBAMA’S GOOD JUDGEMENT: 1)….But he made a speech against the Iraq war. Summary: One mediocre judgment do not equal “good judgment”

First off, if Obama was a muslim – so what? It’s obvious from how he and his family live their life that they would be complete middle-of-the-road muslims. No different than say Jews or Christians in this country.
We are one of the few countries where a Sunni could live next door to a Shiite, with no problems. Muslims live here, because they’d *die* back home. All they want to do is raise families, run their businesses, and maybe if they are lucky, make Hajj. They don’t want to bother anyone. They don’t want to blow anyone up, and they CERTAINLY don’t want Hillary Clinton implying that they do.
The name Hussein means “handsome” not “Death to the Infidel”. For every enemy “Saddam Hussein”, there was an ally “King Hussein”.
We’re fast approaching the point where muslims are being demonized, and I’m getting tired of it. Even Obama is started to tread too close to that line for my tastes in his denials, and it’s all because of Hillary Clinton’s racist campaign strategies. She should be ashamed of herself.
First she tries to alienate women from men, then blacks from latinos, and now muslims from everyone else. While I’m an atheist, I’d be happy to be wrong if that means she has some place to roast for eternity.
She is truly a reprehensible person.

I find it somewhat sad and humorous that people posting on the internet think they know what is truly in any of the candidates minds.
That goes for the news media as well.
No one is courting the Muslim vote in this country because they represent .6% of the population in this country.
I just don’t get the paranoia from the anti Muslim hate mongers. Do they really think .6% of the population is going to take over this country? Let alone one person.

Hillary’s equivocation tonight is the same kind of dirty politics that her campaign specializes in. Doesn’t she get it? That’s what we, the voters, are sick and tired of! And that’s why Obama is replacing our cynicism with new hope.

The two-time Bush voters that are dominating these blogs should be ashamed for even being involved with an election this year. Your track record is abysmal, why do you keep attempting to create chaos between Clinton and Obama? In the end, the party will unite. Go listen to Rush and be quiet.

Look, I am a big Obama supporter and I really dislike Hillary. I hope he blows her out of the water on Tuesday and I think that it would be great if he gets double-digit margins in all 4 states (not that it is likely).
But I watched the video of the interview with Kroft and there is no reason in my mind to think that Hillary was equivocating.
If I only read the text, I might be led to that belief, but watching the video makes it quite clear that she is in no way suggesting the he is a Muslim. The “as far as I know” in text form might seem like an equivocation, but on the video it seems more like a challenge to Kroft as in “if you have evidence to the contrary, please produce it”.

It does not interest me whether he is a muslim or not. What I DO find troublesome is his fulsome religious zeal on stage with utterances that suggest that he is “directly in touch with Jesus”, with his “healing touches” to young women who swoon and sway in delirious tears at his gatherings. This is plain humbug. And stagey. The presidency requires a man/woman of balance and rationality to whom religion acts as a private moral compass, nothing more and perhaps, nothing less. Public religious zeal is scary.

The fact is that, unlike Foster’s death — about which there remains a good deal of mystery — Hillary Clinton KNOWS that Barack Obama is a practicing Christian; she KNOWS that he has been a member of the same Christian church for the last 20 years; and she KNOWS that he consistently refers to biblical stories, images, and texts.
And yet, when Steve Kroft pressed Clinton — repeatedly — to confirm that she did NOT believe Barack Obama was a Muslim, she completely let Obama twist in the wind:
She refused — at EVERY opportunity — to say, affirmatively, that Obama is a practicing Christian; to say, affirmatively, that he has been a member of the same Christian church for the last 20 years; or to mention his consistent references to biblical stories, images, and texts.
She refused — at EVERY opportunity — specifically to condemn the anti-Muslim smears against him, smears which — as Obama rightly acknowledges — are an insult not just to him but to all Muslims.
The Foster comparison you are peddling here is vicious, taboid “journalism” of the worst kind that makes David Schuster look like a choirboy.
Shame on you.

Why did Steve Kroft feel it necessary to ask Hillary Clinton 3 times about her believing whether or not Barack Obama was a Muslim? She answered “Of course not” the first time. Wasn’t that good enough for him? How ridiculous!
And the hypothetical used here is absolutely unbelievable. Asking someone if they believe a person is a Muslim or not does not begin to equate with if they believe a person had someone killed!
Barack Obama wrote a book which included information about his heritage which included him having Muslim roots. All this information was available to the public before this election process began.

I’ve had it with Hillary. She is such a horrible person in so many horrible ways. I am sure somewhere the Good Lord has a place reserved for racists, bigots, and doers of evil against others. Hillary seems to attract these kind of people to her corner. Could it be that birds of a feather stick together? Ummm, makes one wonder.

Hillary’s “as far as I know” leaves the question wide open to speculation.
I, myself, have used those same words when I am not sure about something. I think you could say, “as far as I know” equates to “I really don’t know”. SHAME ON YOU HILLARY CLINTON!!!
Hillary, you need to drop out of this Presidential race and let the country move forward. You are truly a disgrace to our democracy and to our country. Just go away and stay away. We are very tired of you and your “beat around the bush” answers to questions
presented to you. You never seem to have an honest answer.
I have concluded Hillary is mentally unstable. No sane person behaves in the manner she does.

I think the more appropriate comparison would be instead of Vince Foster, talk about the lesbian rumor w/ her beautiful young right hand woman of Muslim decent, Huma. Both politically damaging even though it should be a “so what?” issue, but not a crime as in the murder allegation.

It is amazing how we Americans are talking negatively about the notion of “Obama being a Muslim”
So what if he was a Muslim, or Jew, or Mormon, or Hindu, or Buddhist? Does this change anything? Does this mean he will be able to govern outside the boundaries of the Constitution of the United States of America?
Are we saying that it slipped the mind of our founding fathers that if a non Christian was elected to the office of the presidency of the United States then the constitution will be in danger?
What kind of constitution is this?
This is a constitution that has stood the test of time including a civil war, liberation of slaves, the election of a Catholic to the presidency and his assassination, Watergate and its resignation, and Monica Lewinsky with its impeachment!
It is a shame to consider that if an American Muslim, American Hindu, American Sikh, American Mormon, American Jew, American Buddhist or any other American denomination was elected to the highest office in the land then the constitution will be in grave danger.
The constitution will be just fine. (And no this is not plagiarism. I did not borrow this from Clinton’s last line in the Texas debate)
The constitution will always reflect the collective wisdom of the people of this beautiful country where any loyal American will be allowed to serve within its boundaries.
Please, let us stop this kind of talk because at the end of the day we are only dwarfing our potential.

Clinton gave the sort of answer one would expect to see on SNL, complete with wink-wink, nudge-nudge and a knife in the back.
But you know…after she brought up SNL in the debate, and then appeared on the show, I’m wondering if she knows the difference between SNL and real life? Maybe she’s actually delusional.
We’ll see what she does on The Daily Show – Jon Stewart is certain to ask her about this ‘episode’.

This doesn’t even dignify a response. But I will anyway, because apparently, not much does, and at least this way there is an effort made for the greater good.
Why do you focus on the natural remark “As far as I know.”
Instead of the exclamatory direct answers “Of course not,”
or “No! No!”
What do you want, some other absolute insistence that she knows?
That’s how people in politics talk, Barack talks the same way.
How often do they all say, “As far as I know?”
Very often. Does it sound familiar to anyone who listens to politics?
At this point it seems that everyone involved in the campaigns and the media is sleep deprived.

She knows from internal polling that many of her supporters, especially in rural Texas and rural Ohio, believe these Internet lies. She can’t afford to lose the ignorant-white-racist vote, or she might lose Texas and Ohio. So she intentionally lets the doubt linger. She knew darn good and well what the effect of her carefully chosen words would be. She smiled the whole time, pleased to have the opportunity to reinforce the Internet lies one more time on national TV right before the election. Vile. Just vile.

There are few places where fair and balanced journalism exists anymore.
We now have unfair, imbalanced journalism.
Hillary is the most qualified candidate, and more than deserves to be in this race.
She is the candidate who would govern our country most effectively and efficiently at this time.
She has the best economic and health care plans.
The best course of action for our country would be for her to be our next president so she can fix our problems, and then Barack can be president when he has more experience and is more qualified.
The Clintons are loved around the world. I have heard as much from international blogs.
She would bring hope and change much faster than Barack. He has too much to learn yet.
The last thing we need is another inexperienced president right now.

Re. the attempt to smear Senator Obama with his association with “Muslim” and the snarky remarks about the middle name that was foisted on him by his father at birth:
In old tyme England, a noble who went against the King would have his lands confiscated. In addition, to put the “fear of God” into people, the king would forbid that noble’s sons and grandsons from being able to ever own land. This is what was behind the concept of “corruption of blood.”
The Founding Fathers of this country did not believe in the concept of “corruption of blood.” That’s why they wrote in the constitution that there “will be no corruption of blood.” The Founding Fathers did not believe that the “sins of the fathers” should be visited on the sons.
I beg all who read this posting to please judge Senator Obama on his own greatness.
Peace.

“The last thing we need is another inexperienced president right now.”
I still wonder what experience other presidents have had going into office. Clinton supporters claim that Bill was one of our greatest presidents, yet he was only a governor, like Bush… McCain supporters hail Regan, but he was also only a governor, and an actor before that. This experience argument gets weaker and weaker when you look at those two alone.

Hillary had a golden opportunity to set the record straight– not just on Obama but on how much being a Muslim should not matter, that Muslim is not the equivilency of terrorist or even enemy of the American people and to think in those terms is prejudiced and undemocratic. Frankly, her failure in this makes her look like a certain brand of Republican, reinforencing that she quietly enjoys the benefit religious smearing has afforded her. Grostesque.

If she’d just said “Of course not” and left it at that, that would’ve been fine. But when she follows it up with things like “I take him on the basis of what he says” and “There’s nothing to base that on. As far as I know” she implies that she has no knowledge of any evidence either way and is just taking him at his word, and you know, maybe he’s lying. Now there’s no way she’s not aware he’s a practicing Christian with 20 years membership of the same church – so why the ambivalence?
Maybe we’re reading too much into it, but even if we are, I’d expect a potential President to be able to answer questions unambiguously if they wanted to. Either way, whether she’s deliberately being ambivalent or accidentally, it’s not good.

How much Hillary’s multiple personality disorder is a reflection of the candidate herself or of the people running her campaign is difficult to say. But the Democratic party itself must bear much of the blame. Its adulation of the Clintons went to her head. It bred complacency and a sense of entitlement. The campaign expected an easy win and had no real plan of action beyond Super Tuesday. Since the first Obama surge, Mrs Clinton and her advisers have seemed in shock, vacillating between insisting that everything is still on track and desperately reaching for another personality for the candidate to try on.
Mrs Clinton was never as strong a contender as her courtiers had led her to think. Her claim of vast experience – the crux of her campaign – was contestable at the very least. Once the campaign began, her husband was likely to be as much a liability as an asset, and so it proved. She proudly exemplified a kind of politics (“I’m a fighter”) that many Americans had had enough of. In Mr Obama she turned out to be facing an exceptional opponent, with all the novelty and authenticity she lacked. And then, if all that were not enough, her campaign, once rattled, was woefully managed.
Bearing all this is mind, the real surprise may not be that she is on the point of defeat, but that she still retains – for one more day, at least – some small chance of succeeding.

Posted by: Leslie | March 3, 2008, 8:27 am 8:27 am
I think, after all that has happened over the course of the election, with Clinton’s own staffers spreading a rumor that Obama is Muslim, the leaked photo, and the backlash from equivocal comments in SC, Clinton should have known enough to answer this one clearly. It required a simple, direct answer — “no, I don’t believe he’s a Muslim” — and it would have been over. The reporter pressed her because she was ambiguous in her answer. She left it open to court votes, but this also encourages racism, xenophobia, and fear-mongering against Muslims. A presidential candidate, as Clinton herself noted in the last debate, needs to be firm to put such things to rest. She can’t even live up to her own ethics. I’m terribly disappointed in her response and in the way her campaign has encouraged these rumors.

Hillary the Hypocrite. Barack Obama is forced ad nauseum to “denounce and reject” for days on end, but when Hillary’s supporter Adelfa Callejo made a statement that Hispanics won’t vote for Barack Obama because he’s black, Hillary becomes slick and evasive and makes superficial comments about free speech. Her campaign disgusts me. If somehow she wheedles and whines and lies her way to the Democratic nomination I will sit this election out.
Posted by: Brenna | March 3, 2008, 8:55 am 8:55 am
It appears to me to be more sympathy for Obama. He is being picked on unfairly, according to his camp, when I think they played the race card in South Carolina to ignite their black vote. The picture of him in Muslim-looking dress came from his own documentary, and his ME name Hussein is an honorable name in world affairs. Each possible point for prejudice has been played by his own camp to dredge up anger and sympathy.
Your hypotheticals with Hillary are more fuel to their fire to whip up a sympathy for their candidate. Who has suffered the brunt of this kind of outrageous name-calling? Ask the Obama camp. They can have it both ways. Hillary has been called every kind of insult imaginable in the media, television, print, and the internet. Just look at some of your blogs.
AS FAR AS I KNOW! What does that mean? Why, it’s an honest answer but, look at it now. It’s another little point to drum up sympathy.
Do you think that will divert attention from double-talk to the people in Ohio and the Canadians, or divert attention from a 17-year relationship with Rezko?

Stop the Clinton dynasty once

has always been personal gain from
gaining public office. They have
done very well amassing a fortune
of over $50,000,000 from sources
that they won’t disclose. Surely
the fact that they won’t release
their tax return until “she secures
the nomination,” speaks volumes.
Bill will use the White House to

Supporting Hillary Clinton at this point is to blindly hold on to the desire to have the first female President. She has lost it time and time again, her personality changing like the wind. If it weren’t for her feminist band of supporters, who would seem to support her for President even if she murdered someone, she would not even be in the running in Ohio and Texas…it’s time to look past Hillary and find a new female candidate to be President in 8 years from now…

You know I’m so disappointed in the Democratic race because it seems no matter how hard Obama tries between the media and Hillary Clinton and her desperate attempt to make Obama look black at the same that she’s plays on woman voter’s mostly white women voters by using the scare tactics. It is clear to me when listening to shows like Morning Joe and Saturday Night Live, Hardball that Clinton is getting her way by wining about the media is mistreating me. I’m so sick of her, sick of her and Bill’s dirty tactics.
I believe the Republican Party now that they are a dirty political machine. I should never supported Bill Clinton during his justify impeachment.
Black American we should learn our lesson now that a Black can not be President of the United State because the United States is still not a place where true freedom can raise because if OBAMA does not become President when will we get a Black President? WHEN? OR is Bill Clinton and Now Hillary Clinton our only chance at the President seat.. This makes me sick..
Well Black American and all the other American who feel this unjustified please raise up because now is the time.
I think we should have civil rights movement against the President seat discriminating against Obama because he is Black.
AND ANOTHER THING WHY DO HISPANIC VOTER THINK THAT A WHITE PERSON WOULD BE BETTER THAN A BLACK PERSON WHEN THE HISPANIC HAS AFRICAN AMERICAN IN THERE RACE.. GIVE ME A BREAK. IF THE HISPANIC RACE THINKS THAT SOMEHOW A WHITE PRESIDENT IS GOING TO DO BETTER FOR THEM THAN A BLACK PRESIDENT THAN ASK THEM WHY THEY HAVEN’T GOTTEN ANYWHERE.
A HISPANIC DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT CANDIATE WILL NEED AFRICAN AMERICAN TO WIN ONE DAY AND IF THEY TURN THERE BACKS NOW ON A FINALLY A MINORITY GETTING INTO THE WHITE HOUSE THERE CHANCES FADES TOO!

“Supporting Hillary Clinton at this point is to blindly hold on to the desire to have the first female President.”
Well, that’s not a bad hope… It would be great to see a woman president. But I feel bad for those with such a hope, since Hillary has been run such a bad campaign. I mean, she IS smart and she DOES have ideas… I personally just don’t trust her because of her history and her seeming to feel entitled to the job. Too many scandals, and too much of the same garbage politics, taking away from the good stuff she brings to the table.

oh, and i do think this is a silly article. the dude should not have repeated his questions, he was simply looking to have her say something dumb, and she did. he was definitely going after her, rather than being objective. but, that’s what sells i guess.

Along the lines of saying that Putin has no soul. Now, she is a great spiritual leader?
Like Putin said: ” You’d have to have a head to be head of state.”

Why does everyone have to be so poltically correct when talking about the Obamanation. It seems this entire week was spent trying not offend Obama and using words that Obama would feel comfortable with. There is no need to attack Hillary-she did not call Obama a Muslim. It was Steve Kroft who raised it and why doesn`t someone ask why he raised it since nobody in the media has ever said that Obama was a Muslim. And anyone who attacks Hillary for those innocuous remarks just doesn`t like Hillary.
Also it is obvious that you get your marching orders from Matt Drudge who highlighted it on his web site.

Is Clinton simply incapable of answering a straightforward question with a straightforward answer? Why is that so difficult for her to do?
Posted by: Tom J | March 3, 2008, 10:50 am 10:50 am
The democrats are falling into the Republicans hand because as long as the race goes on it gives them ideas on how John McCain can beat either Hillary or Obama in NOVEMBER. Why do you think the Florida governor is now suggesting he will redo the race. This is all to help John McCain win..wake up Democrats and Hillary get out of the race.
Posted by: betty | March 3, 2008, 11:16 am 11:16 am
Was doesn’t Steve Kroft just ask Obama instead of browbeating Hillary Clinton- repeating the question 3 times like Vincent D’Onofrio.

Hillary is the master of wordsmithing to avoid making a commitment. It’s almost like listenting to Bill when she speaks… Anyone else notice this?
Earlier this week, she failed to ‘denounce and reject’ the support of the supporter that made racist comments, instead she “rejected and denounced her *comments*”. Hillary, and all the baggage the Clinton Fraud and Scandal Machine brings with her, will drag this country down further than it is now.

Do you really mean to suggest that one should deny the suggestion he is a Muslim with the same ferocity that one should deny the suggestion he is a murderer?
How do you suppose Muslim Americans feel about that kind of back-handed slam?

Ms. Clinton’s reply, as evasive as she usually is,completely cements the case that she is totally and utterly unfit for the office of President of the United States of Amerca. Was this man not the one whom she was honoured to sit next two a few eeks ago and now sowing doubt regarding his religion, as if that s were any business of her’s, your’s or mine? Please Hillary, please just shut up and go away. Give America a break. We’ve had enough of the Clintons to last a lifetime!

One of the most interesting things about Obama in this race is how smooth he is on just about every question that gets thrown his way, but the second anything gets suggested about him and Islam he gets super, super antsy, goes on the defensive, and falls over tripping to disassociate himself with anything Muslim. That’s really telling. Not telling because he is a follower of Islam and doesn’t admit it, but telling because it is such a 360 turn from his rhetoric of uniting the country and beleiving in the power of diversity. If he really took the high ground like he said he does, he wouldn’t have to act so scared and devisive on this issue. But instead he plays his card in a manner befitting of the lowest common denominator. His campaign is based off of pure popularity, and I guess he thinks it’s just not cool to be Muslim. Just shows how little the richness of diversity means to him. Diversity is great when it means votes for the popular guy, but not so great when it means really, really having to take a stand. Change you can believe in? Don’t buy it. Change as a slogan to get votes? Well, if it walks like a duck…
As for Hillary, she’s got a lot on her mind these days and testifying to Obama’s religious convictions really isn’t high on the list. It was an inappropriate question to ask her, she gave the type of answer that anyone would give in her situation. It is not Hillary Clinton’s job to go around advocating for and defending Obama. No candidate should be expected to do that for another candidate. She is running for President, not as Obama’s best friend. I’ve never heard anyone ask Obama to take up for her. This is a very DUMB article.

What a non-story. First, she said “of course not” and then if you watch the video you can almost imagine what she’s thinking of the question…
“Why did he ask me that again after I answered once?”
“Is this some joke? Is there something else to this?”
“How the *&%@ should *I* know? Why don’t they ask him?”
“How am I supposed to know if he is or isn’t”
“Is this dumb reporter trying to get me to swear on a bible that Obama isn’t Muslim? Seems a bit illogical…”
“Does he really think I might answer with a yes?”
“What a ridiculous question to ask… twice!”
Yup, pretty much a non-story… the story should be, why did they ask her this question… TWICE even?

I find it funny how the same Clinton supporters that said Obama wasn’t strong enough on “rejecting” Farrakon, are now saying that this is a non-issue. They say the MSM is attacking Hillary and not being fair and balanced. This reporter seems to just want to hold Hillary up to the same standards that she set in the debate. If your going to make a big deal about denounce and reject, the door should be open for people to inspect the phrases you use.
Posted by: Ben | March 3, 2008, 3:43 pm 3:43 pm
Clinton could have said, “No, Obama is a Christian, we all know he is a Christian, and I denounce and reject anyone who insinuates otherwise.”
Instead . . . she refused to categorically denounce the slander, and in true blue Clinton fashion turned the matter into how many times she has been smeared…..
The Clintons will do anything and say anything, and have no shame at all.
Clear as day.

So fa as “I” know!!
Shame on You Hillary!
Your Deceptions Were Described By DOJ Prosecutors as Felonies!
You were projecting on Barak Obama your own misconduct when you said “You have been spreading false, misleading, discredited information”.
You began deceiving the public and the government in 2000 about your top Senate campaign donor and “friend” Peter Paul when you TWICE lied in the Washington Post about taking any money from Paul AFTER you and Bill took more than $1.2 million from him (according to the FBI and DOJ Prosecutor).
Days later after vowing not to take money from Paul you faxed him on your Senate Campaign letterhead demanding he contribute an additional $100,000 in untraceable securities by illegally wiring it to a state committee supporting your candidacy.
You were right when you stated “The American people got shafted and (you’re) going to have to make up for it.”
You subverted three federal investigations to avoid your accountability and used your finance director as a foil to avoid your prosecution for the offenses he was improperly charged with.
DOJ Prosecutor Dan Schwager told the criminal jury in the election law fraud trial of your finance director David Rosen, in May 2005, that the basis of the government’s prosecution was the crime of “denying the public’s right to know that Peter Paul personally gave…more than $1.2 million..to your national campaign.”
You and your agents have denied the public the right to know that fact ever since August 2000!
You used deception about that fact to win your election and re-election in 2006. You have denied the public’s right to know who your largest donor was, how much he gave you and why.
The facts on the public record show that you have subverted: the Office of The President, through Bill Clinton, by using the Oval Office to commit felony violations of the campaign laws, the Department of Justice Office of Public Integrity through its Chief, Noel Hillman who set up a sham indictment and a show trial intended to cover up your illegalities, the federal judiciary through Howard Matz, the judge you appointed with Bill Clinton as co-president, who threw the Rosen trial with outrageous statements to the jury denying your involvement and the FEC itself through a fraudulent settlement that was based on a fourth false FEC report that gave you immunity from investigation!.
Its time to tell the truth at long last- File a True FEC Report That Finally Admits What the DOJ and FBI Have Sworn- You Took More than $1.2 Million in Contributions From Peter Paul and Have Hidden it From The Public ever Since!

All Hillary does is divide American people, hence divide the country unti everyone is ready to kill their next door neighbour because they are not of the right colour, right race ,right religion, or even right gender for that matter. She tried her tricks: blacks against whites, blacks against Latinos, Muslims agains jews , man against women and the list goes on and on. When is this woman going to stop this divisive nonsense??? Maybe until she gets her nomination than she will stop??? Shame on Her and Her Campaign.

Actually Hillary Clinton has united white males, white females, Hispanics, Jews (see today’s NY Post),Catholics, Asians, and others in a coalition against the fraud Obama.

I heard that comment and thought the same thing?? Very devisive is Hillary — I also heard Bob Shrum say that when Hillary comes back — and Bush wonder who is predicting gas at $4.00 a gallon — just where are they coming from?? Do they think that people cannot read, listen and decide on their own — that is what the change is that the Clinton campaign cannot understand — it’s people actually taking an interest and people who cannot be fooled into believing campaign drivel anymore — enough is enough! March 4th should decide that. The Clinton backers keep moving the goal posts, but the American people are smart enough to see it for what it is.

After this comment, I would probably vote for McCain. She’s just so divisive which he really isn’t. He actually has been a uniter. I hope Obama creams her tomorrow. and BTW I really am not a Hillary hater. I’m just so disappointed.

Dear Spock,
Jeremiah Wright, the pastor of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, is obviously a Christian. Neither he nor Barack Obama has ever been a Muslim. Please refrain from spreading pure lies, and check your facts before making outlandish claims.
As Barack Obama has said on numerous occasions, these lies insult not only Obama’s own convictions but the convictions of millions of peaceful Muslims whose religion is being exploited to scare people.
Hillary Clinton needs to do much more to denounce and reject this shameful politics of fear and deceit.

As far as I know, doesn’t mean anything more than that here. I am for niether candidate. That is I havn’t decided so I am not being bias here. Obama can’t be a muslim, he has an Irish name! Hussein is an Irish name right?
The answer to this is real simple!! If he is a Christian let him condemn the Jihad the muslim fanatics have been using against the USA for the last 35 years. Or you could just condemn the people that have doubt!! Steve Kroft is all knowing!! I am sure !!

Hillary as far as she knows he is not muslam, short of calling on god how would she know.Maybe if she asks god to send down the celestial choir the Obamanites will feel so much better on her choice of words. She said there was no bases for believing he was.Of course this does try to blow it up to take some heat off Obama and his Nafta and Rezko melt downs now doesnt it.

For someone who has spent so much time being attacked unfairly all of her political life, I cannot believe that HRC would be able to smear another person so easily. It shows a tremendous lack of character.
There is also a pretty good argument that HRC would have a hell of a lot more ability to attest AGAINST Obama’s being a muslim (Hello? Don’t you ever see him eating pork out on the trail? Do you ever catch him praying furtively to Mecca in the green room prior to a debate?) Arguably, HRC knows Obama better now and sees him more than she sees her husband. This is shameful.

No one disputes that Obama is a Christian but we all saw the shame from Obama when he pretended that the rumors were baseless. A man who cannot recognize his heritage or his past cannot lead. The rumors have a reason and the person who needs to address that is Obama without shame.
Posted by: Voter | March 4, 2008, 11:39 am 11:39 am
I am surprised that the Hillary bashers are picking up on these slim pickings. What she could have said was “Look, the rumors are not baseless and Barack has a rich heritage which includes Muslim — people want to know and Barack is the only one who can answer these questions”. Well Barack did by saying that the rumors are baseless like we are living in a different planet! I cannot understand why he is so ashamed of his heritage!

I think Steve Kroft was trying to make Hillary gossip. How else can a person respond to gossip — she didn’t want to sound offensive to Steve Kroft’s intelligence. Steve Kroft should be asking personal questions of the person involved. This speaks to Steve Kroft and not Hillary. This would not be happennig if Obama had been strong enough to accept his heritage.

Your comment: “…two Clinton campaign volunteer coordinators in Iowa were asked by the Clinton campaign to resign after it came out that they had circulated those insane Obama-is-a-Muslim-Manchurian-candidate emails” reminded me that the Clinton campaign’s original, repeated response to those emails was that they were “an obvious right-wing hit job.” I don’t suppose the campaign has since recanted this. The problem is, Hillary’s history contains so many lies that it all becomes white noise. “Obviously, I wouldn’t be in this race if I didn’t care for the people of this county…” Give me a break!

Only losers like Clinton’s hard core supporters think these snide comments would be beneficial to her. You would think there would be someone in this world who could confirm such an idiotic story.
He went to a Catholic elem school and a fine Christian prep school where he was in the jock clique. Students attended chapel there. Why would he radically convert while attending Ivy League schools thereafter? Some people are just jealous and resort to this crap…pathetic losers.

I cannot honestly see anything wrong with what she said! She was asked/baited the same ridiculous question 3 times, and she said “no” 3 times. If someone repeatedly asks me the same question, around the third time of answering it, I could definitely see saying “…as far as I know.” As far as she knows, he is not a Muslim (or an astronaut or a sushi chef, where are just as (ir)relevant); she doesn’t think he is and doesn’t have reason to believe he is.
What she SHOULD have said in response is: “What does Barack Obama’s religion have to do with my OR his qualifications to be the president of the US? Ask me about my health care plan.”
Posted by: Adam | March 4, 2008, 9:44 pm 9:44 pm
It’s not a question of Obama being ashamed of his heritage, it’s the way his heritage is used as a weapon. After years of being told that we are at war with Islamist facism, it is an obvious attempt to stir up racism when someone uses Barack’s name and claims that he is a Muslim.
Posted by: Jackie | March 5, 2008, 10:15 pm 10:15 pm
There’s been a whole lot of activity by neo-nazis spreading this stuff about Obama being a Muslim and and an unpariotic terrorist sympathizer. It’s all over the internet and church and factory parking lots are being leafletted with it, tee shirts being sold with it. And some of it’s bringing up Charlie Manson’s vision of Helter Skelter – the impending world wide race war. I can’t understand why the media isn’t exposing these people and how dangerous it is to play with this fire.
