Ferarro and the Politics of Race

For what it’s worth — raised on the border of South Philly, which is not unlike Queens — I grew up around hundreds of working-class Gerry Ferraro types.

In a city with a history of racial tensions between working-class whites and African-Americans, I can hardly think of a better wedge issue for the Clinton campaign to use than this one — this notion that Obama has benefited from some sort of political affirmative action.

And I cannot think of a better surrogate to deliver that message than Gerry Ferraro.

Impeccable coincidence.

HILLARY CLINTON is focused on campaign issues. What is important for the American people? I care about pocketbook issues. Press wants to make this about race and is baiting anybody and everybody around the campaigns. Let’s get back to the issues.

hehehehe…..yes, impeccable. Coincidence (wink). Hillary is up +19 in the latest PA polls. She is going for the knockout. You go girl.

Whatever, get a grip. Once again, to quote the immortal James Carville, “It’s the Economy Stupid”.

Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | March 11, 2008, 6:46 pm 6:46 pm

Hillary Clinton would not be where she is if she wasn’t Bill Clinton’s wife. And she is not focused on “campaign issues”. Hillary Clinton is focused on stealing the nomination however she can. She doesn’t give a hoot about the American people. And she’s not telling Ferraro to leave. Hillary has no integrity, no scruples, no conscience.

So you are putting forward this is all just a Clinton plot? Yeah she controls the illuminati too.
I think perhaps you haven’t gotten enough sleep lately and hve been on the trail for too long, because the conspiracy theory is absurd.
Did I mention that yet another Obama STAFFER had to resign today for “slurs” against Clinton?

Before everyone gets worked up about a woman calling a black man…gulp…black. You should know that she is not affiliated with the campaign in a financially paid way. There is no person to “fire”, because she is not working for the Hillary campaign. She is a supporter of Hillary, and although these are not apples to apples, but so is Louis Farrakhan, Rev. Wright, and many other people who love to stick their foot in their mouth supporters of Obama.

An appeal to race is nowhere more apparent than in Mississippi, where Obama again dredged up the picture of himself in African garb. Though Obama had already absolved the Clinton campaign of connection to the picture, he raised it again and blamed Clinton in a primary that will involve the largest percentage of black voters?
Coincidence??

Ya you see rules apply to other people and the other side must be held to the strictest standards.
About your own people, it ain’t important.
The thing is Hillary’s most important demographic is women over 50 and especially 60. She ain’t gonna do anything that may offends these women.

Ferraro said these comments last week, now the obama camp playing it up for all its worth on election day, BY Any Means Necessary but not one column about obama playing racial yesterday (Hoodwink, Bamboozled, OKe Doke) not one word from any MSM.

Posted by: toby | March 11, 2008, 7:13 pm 7:13 pm

Hey if Clinton wants to take off the gloves then that’s her choice. If it is going to turn into a “any thing goes” fight amoung the “supporters” then I would have to remind Hillary that those years of “experience” she claims comes with quite a few ugly situations she may not want brought to light…along with her tax returns. People need to understand morals and values and that once a certain “pandora’s box” is opened? You can’t put the lid back on and today? Hillary left it open and she does so at her own peril.

Posted by: Sam | March 11, 2008, 7:16 pm 7:16 pm

Toby…it’s because it was true. She did attempt a “hoodwink” of the Mississippi voters and even her own supporters have stated as such…..

Posted by: Sam | March 11, 2008, 7:18 pm 7:18 pm

Ferraros comments were not racist, they were spot on true with 80/90% of the black vote it can be nothing more than true.

ECONOMY, please! Does everybody have ADD here? HILLARY CLINTON is worried about securing our nation’s economic health. Why should you be worried about anything different?

Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | March 11, 2008, 7:25 pm 7:25 pm

I have many African American friends who also believe that based on Obama’s experience and track record, he would not be where he is today if he was white. It is not a racist statement unless my african American friends are Racist!! This is exactly why Obama cannot be critized in any way.

Not For Hill
“Senator Clinton wouldn’t be so naive to set the political bar so high in her campaign. There is no hypocrisy here.”
See the problem with LOM’s comment is that Hillary don’t use any bar. So that’s how you solve that one.
Clinton/Sinbad 08? Not anymore. Looks like Sinbad is off the list now.

So many politicians over the years have been brought down for so much less. Hillary and her bunch are without a doubt the most low-down, wicked bunch to have run a campaign for the presidency in my lifetime. What has the United States come to even considering her as a credible candidate? America — you don’t even know it, but you are being judged and you are definitely found lacking!

Posted by: petee | March 11, 2008, 7:30 pm 7:30 pm

Let’s Put Duct Tape on every ones Mouth!
None of these candidates are worth fighting over, let alone to fight over what someone associated said about them.
Wake up please…………..
Who is the one inciting splitting the country up?
I think everyone needs to turn off their computers, their TV’s and get some me time.
Maybe people would start thinking with common sense and reason.
Of course those of you under 18 your can’t vote anyhow, but go into the real 3D world for awhile.

Posted by: seah | March 11, 2008, 7:30 pm 7:30 pm

More Clinton race-baiting, pure and simple.
When push came to shove, the Clintons showed themselves utterly and readily willing to throw black voters under the bus wheels in their unquenchable lust for power and position.
Who will be next?

Posted by: adam | March 11, 2008, 7:33 pm 7:33 pm

You are all delusional if you believe that Obama would be able to run on his thin record of accomplishment if he were White!! Why have we not heard anything about Michelle’s 200k raise as soon as Obama was elected to the Senate?

Posted by: Jerry | March 11, 2008, 7:44 pm 7:44 pm

The Clintons want Bill to be the first and the last black President of the United States.

Posted by: Monk | March 11, 2008, 7:50 pm 7:50 pm

This is a classic case of Clinton-phobia. Anything that happens is a convoluted and manipulative plot from the deceptive Hillary Clinton.
Please. Considering Obama used words like “hoodwinked” and “okie-doked” when in Mississippi and suddenly re-remembered the Somali photo I wouldn’t put it past the Obama camp to create a huge issue of something that I would have never considered “racist”. Mentioning Obama’s race is apparently racist now.

Posted by: Joan | March 11, 2008, 7:53 pm 7:53 pm

I heard this issue being raised before someone close to the Clinton campaign said it, selective media coverage. I am still waiting for the coverage on obama and all his scandal, I guess it will come out after he has won the nomination, then we are so screwed!

Posted by: D | March 11, 2008, 7:53 pm 7:53 pm

Obama is doing as well as he is because he’s an incredibly talented politician who is connecting with voters in a way that no politician has in years. To suggest that he’s done well because he’s black is simply incorrect. How about you ask Presidents Jackson & Sharpton how being black really helped them…
By the way, if Hillary wins Penn by 19 points, I’ll eat my shoe.

LOM…. you make a great point… something to ponder…

Posted by: D | March 11, 2008, 8:05 pm 8:05 pm

Usually my remarks are sarcastic.
However, today I am saddened by the realization of Hillary’s superiority to black people, especially after having voted for her husband on both of his elections.
She has belittled Barack throughout this campaign: (1) “Shame on you Barack” as if he was her child, (2) “Reject Farrakah, don’t simply denounce him,” as if he should abide by her rules, (3) “Fire her for calling me a monster,” as if he should take her feelings more into consideration than his own, (4) “The skies will open and the celestrial choirs will sing,” as if his message is beneath hers.
Yet, she refuses to reject and denouce Ferraro’s blatant racist attacks. She has continuously played the race card throughout this campaign, but cries the victim when she needs to pull out her gender card.
You won’t find a HahaHahaHa! tagline after this post. This post is reality – and it is sad for me and the American people. Hillary has a superiority complex that is bred in the American fabric. Her supporters do not mean to feel this way, it is just the way it is!

Posted by: Sarah | March 11, 2008, 8:07 pm 8:07 pm

Obama is like a stand up comic who had a great routine (which he lifted from another comic), but after that no material. After he “hope” sppech he has shown mothing but ineptidude and negativity.

Posted by: geevill | March 11, 2008, 8:08 pm 8:08 pm

Actually, I think Ferraro’s comments are flawed afterall. She is quite erroneous in implying that Obama wouldn’t have come this far as a white man. He has come this far as a white man. He is just as much white as he is black. So, I’m not sure what point she is making.
Actually, Obama is a formidable opponent and a great candidate. Unlike some un-democrats here, I will whole-heartedly support him should he become the nominee. Can the Obama people say the same?

Posted by: LOM | March 11, 2008, 8:09 pm 8:09 pm

When someone pulls that curtain behind them in the voting booth, they vote their kind regardless of what they say to your face. That’s how I feel about what goes on. The blacks will vote for Obama without question. It’s their first chance. Would you ignore the opportunity if you were black?

Posted by: Joseph Buttice | March 11, 2008, 8:10 pm 8:10 pm

How does this dingbat Ferarro explain Clinton being in this race? Because if she were not a woman, and if it hadn’t been for her marriage, she wouldn’t be in contention either.

If you are an opponent of HILLARY CLINTON I’ll accord you respect so long as you use facts and reason in your arguments. If you reduce it to name calling, then there is no basis for discussion. Please convince me with reason. That being said, the reason we’re having an election is to better America, starting with our economic health, which is tied to a) Iraq, b) Environment, and c) Health Care. It’s the economy!!! Geraldine Ferraro is right. She’s 100 percent right, and it’s about time that somebody was ‘man’ enough to stand up to all this rediculousness from the Obama campaign. They play their little race card whenever they want to garner sympathy votes or black votes MEANWHILE the media is free as a bird to beat down Hillary since sexism is still everybody’s game.
If younger women are not hurt by this, they will be in the future when they are standing their with three little kids and a baby’s father that doesn’t pay a cent in child support and they have to work making 60 cents an hour to their ‘babies’ daddy’s’ dollar and trying to pay 100 percent of their child’s support. Maybe then they will realise what the feminist movement is about.
Good luck girls, because if you are not in it with us old feminists, you can count on learning the hard way and taking up the cause in another decade or two. Either way, you will be a victim of what you say doesn’t exist now.

Posted by: Lynnzy | March 11, 2008, 8:40 pm 8:40 pm

obama-yikes….you need to be enlightened.
Black America DID come out in large numbers, both in 2000 for Gore, and again in 2004 for Kerry!
Another four years have passed and again, you have black america coming out to vote, this time overwhelmingly for Obama.
There were some blacks that voted republican. I don’t know what the percentage is, but they did vote. So this is not new. Four years have passed and Obama is appealing to younger blacks AND whites, thus you have a larger number. Before, the youngers weren’t all that concerned, but he is speaking to them, and they are responding. All races.
I believe that because Obama is in this race, that it has become more of an issue during this election, and is being reported more during this election.

Posted by: LA in Indiana | March 11, 2008, 8:44 pm 8:44 pm

I don’t agree with Ferraro – but think she is being honest about what she believes. And I found Bill Bradley’s comments, which you posted without criticism – incredibly arrogant, offensive – and sexist. I lost all respect for him. But apparently that all mostly went under the radar screen.
But what if the exact same comments he made about her were made about Barack in the same tone?
You know I hate to bring sexism/anti-sexism up, but it is here affecting these dynamics just as much racism/anti-racism.
This should be about who’s most qualified.

Posted by: Lauren | March 11, 2008, 8:46 pm 8:46 pm

It is beyond my comprehension how anyone with any intelligence or ounce of reason cannot see the blatant racism in this primary!!!
91 % OF BLACKS VOTED FOR OBAMA IN MISSISSIPPI!!!!!!! Do I think they know what he stands for? NO. Do I think they care what he stands for? NO. It is like the jury nillification of OJ and the racial division there was with his verdict across the country…same idea here, a black man runs for a high office, no black man has before, so, lets vote blindly for the black man.
Geraldine had alot of guts to say what we ALL know is happening, whether we choose to admit it or not. Is it a slur? Since when is saying a black man is black, or mentioning race at all, a slur.
If OB was white, and campaigning on this “feel good” theme, he would not be where he is, he would be off with John Edwards. I know he is mulato, but he plays black, he refers to his blackness, and he embraces the blackness. When was the last time he mentioned his white mother who raised him for his entire youth after his father, you know, the black guy, left them? NEVER!!!! If he did he might not have the black bloc of voters he know enjoys.

Interestingly enough, I never want to be accused of not looking at the facts so I did a little research on Rezko contributions. In 2001 and 2003, Rezko and those tied closely to him donated bits at a time totaling $7500 to a mayor who later became a co-chair for the Clinton camp. Upon review, it was noted those contributions were made long before any issues related to Rezko became public. The mayor said he does not know him and there have been no stories I could find disputing the above. I could find zero contributions on the record directly to the Clinton campaign. Care to quote your sources?

Ferraro is clearly and unmistakably playing the race card on Hillary’s behalf, sneakily and intentionally manipulating the racial, anti-affirmative action fears of undereducated, poor, downscale white voters, and then compounding it by scurrilously and disingenuously going on Fox News to whine about being called out on her racist strategy, further endearing herself and her mentor Hillary to the dim and the bigoted!
If you can’t see through this bilge, you really don’t understand how the Clintons operate.
Dear God — my Republican brother and father were right about the Clintons all along….

I personally would like to see Obamas tax returns for the years he sat on the Health Facilities Planning Board, the very same board Rezko sold appointments to,and other political favors.Obama was able in his 8 years as legislature to buy a 1.26 million dallor home and finance a senate campaign.

If Westcoast messenger was referring to me, I am a 53 year old fed-up-with-the-old-divisive politics, WASP male New Yorker. I forgot to mention earlier that not only did Clinton get to where she is because of her marriage to Bill, Geraldine Ferraro became a VP running mate simply because she was a woman. She had nothing in particular to qualify her for the position. This is a disgusting immoral argument.

Posted by: Theo | March 11, 2008, 8:56 pm 8:56 pm

Gerry is ABSOLUTELY DEAD ON! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO HAVE THE GUMPTION TO SAY THIS!!!!
It is clear that Hillary is most qualified.
It is clear, by many African Americans own admission that they are simply voting their skin color.
We are in for a rude awakening America. This will be another illegitimate presidency. And yes whites and other races are voting for him just as they are voting for Hillary….but….clearly many are voting for black….and where there are those in majority, as in Missippi, he will win, not because he is brilliantly qualified, but simply because he is black. such a shame. If he is the nominee you will see half of us vote for mcain. if she is the nominee you will see the other half vote for mcain either way…..its mcain…Obama needs to get over himself, stop swaggering around on stage, tell his supporters to stop calling him brotha, and realize he is only as far as he is because he is in fact black.
The country is ready for either a black or woman president. but in this case, she is far more qualified. get it together people.

Posted by: Laura from NY | March 11, 2008, 8:58 pm 8:58 pm

Some folks will vote against Obama because he’s not white; some will vote for him because he’s black. Some will vote against Hillary because she’s female, some will vote for her because she’s female. I have heard a number of clinton supporters use racist code words against Obama. I haven’t seen any of Obama’s supporters say you shouldn’t vote for HRC because of her gender, but I’m sure someone will point some cases that appear to them to be sexist.
One thing I know from the exit polls today and in all the other contests. Hillary’s core support is older females; Obama resonates with young voters. If the Democratic Party chooses Obama, they are investing in the future. If it’s Hillary, she loses to McSame, who has lots more age and experience than even she, and then they lose in 2010, 1012, 2014……… permanent Republican majority, the Karl Rove dream.

Laura, what makes her ‘far more qualified’???
They are both attorneys, both worked for law firms. She was first lady and Obama was a professor teaching constitutional law, and a state legislator. So he was in government a few years longer than she. She was a senator a few years longer than he.
So what exactly makes hillary ‘far more qualified’?

Obama was in with Rezko
Extremely good Friends with Rezko
Obama knowing Rezko was crooked and under investigation, still went to him and use dirty money so he could buy a house.
Michelle Obama was on the land committee
which rushed everything through, so she is crooked too.
Obama helps Rezko with the swindling of the hospitals and the pension fund, and crookedness in Illinois government, after he was a US Senator.
He said he didn’t know Rezko when he was first asked, said they were acquaintances, and that he only seen him at functions. that turned into friends of 18 years, both stories from obamas mouth.
He said he only got 20k from Rezko over his career, turn into 60k now it is up to 168k. How much higher will it go.
What charity did he dump the money into?
wonder if it was a non profit church? or hospital?
why not give it to the courts to return it to the ones who were swindled?
Saint Obama my *#(#*&%

seah, I don’t what election YOU are watching, but I believe you have your facts wrong.
I don’t believe Obama has lied about anything, but if you believe that, that is your choice.
Speaking of Rezko….when he purchased his home, Obama DID say he didn’t think twice about it because there was no proof there was any wrong doing on Rezko’s part, at the time. Yes he was under investigation, and that is why Obama said that is something he should not have done. But again, at that point, nothing had been proven. I understand that and take him at his word on that.
If you want to make a comparison on lying….hillary is still talking about the canadians when it has been stated that Obama’s camp was NOT the one who talked with them with the wink and nod, but it was the clinton camp. The one gentleman even stated the clinton name in conversation, not Obama.
So what lies has Obama told that YOU caught onto?
If you think about it, hillary has stopped talking about Rezko, so there must be a reason for that. If there was something there, she would be jamming Rezko down our throats, as she did previously.

THE CHILDISHNESS OBAMA ADVISER DISPLAYED WHEN SHE CALLED HILLARY A MONSTER IS THE HALLWARK OF OBAMA CAMPAIGN AND MESSAGE. SLOGANS SHORT AND SWEET NO MATTER HOW EMPTY THEY SOUND ALWAYS WORK BETTER WITH THE YOUNG, INEXPERIENCED AND IGNORANT. HOW IGNORANT AND CHILDISH CAN ANY ONE GET BY CALLING SOMEONE A MONSTER? Not raciest, if Obama was a 46 year old white Jr. senator with the limited experience he has, he would not even be in the game. The fact that he is Black is why he is where he is. he has fired up enough Black voters to leave the Clinton camp because for the first time in Black history they actually have a shot at the presidency. Very articulate, well spoken, yes, but my oh my, doesn’t she always seem to have a plethora, a veritable cornucopia, of conveniently supportive “facts” and data for her prodigious pro-Clinton posts, yet never admits to anything even the slightest bit negative regarding Hillary, regardless of the supporting facts….
Frankly, I don’t know of any “civilians” who could so readily and frequently spout so much one-sided information off the tops of their heads….

PA it’s up to you to save the Country again. Just like at Gettysburg.

And I agree girlinvt, he should release his former year taxes as well. But this dispute over taxes was for the 2006 return. Obama DID release his, but hillary refused to release hers.
I know people keep talking about his money, but they seem to forget Obama wrote, not one, but two books. Michelle Obama said the sales from those books paid off their school loans. At this point, there doesn’t seem to be much to look at. But again, if the requirement is there for the candidates to release taxes for certain years, then they should both do it.

LA in Indiana people seem to have forgotten that Hillary Clinton wrote two books as well. Both books did very well…

Absurd too.
Unless of course you’re imploring PA to vote Obama. : )

A”ny time anybody does anything that in any way pulls this campaign down and says let’s address reality and the problems we’re facing in this world, you’re accused of being racist, so you have to shut up,” Ferraro said. “Racism works in two different directions. I really think they’re attacking me because I’m white. How’s that?”
Beautiful. Time to speak the truth.

Posted by: geevill | March 11, 2008, 9:34 pm 9:34 pm

IF HILLARY HAS DONE WHAT OBAMA HAD WITH REZKO, I BET WE WOULD HEAR NO END OF IT. WHEN HILLAY POINTS OUT A FACT OR TWO ABOUT OBAMA’S RECORD, SHE IS ACCUSED OF BEING NEGATIVE. WHEN OBAMA CAMPS CALLS HER A MONSTER, AND ALL UNWARRANTED ACCUSATIONS FROM BEING ASSOCIATED WITH BILL, THERE IS BARELY ANY STIR. WHY SHOULD ANY SANE PERSON ACCUSE HILLARY FOR BILL’S LIBRARY FUNDRAISING? IF HILLARY HAS ACCUSED OBAMA IN SUCH TWISTED, UNFACTUAL WAY, SHE WILL BE LABELLED AS A WITCH DESERVE BEING BURN AT THE STAKE.

Posted by: BIAS | March 11, 2008, 9:35 pm 9:35 pm

you’re way off on the “coincidence” tapper. maybe you should do a little more research next time.
From NBC’s David Gelles
I just spoke to reporter Jim Farber, who wrote the Ferraro story for the “Daily Breeze” of Torrance, Calif. He told me the Ferraro interview took place on Feb. 28th, five days before the Ohio and Texas primaries.

Posted by: tex | March 11, 2008, 9:37 pm 9:37 pm

yeah seah, I guess I missed all that.
I’m really surprised at the racial tone this campaign has taken. If Obama is the nominee the hillary supporters won’t vote for him. And it would be the same if she manages to somehow come out on top with superdelegates and win the nomination.
Now folks are depending on white people in PA to vote for hillary, just because she’s white, not because she is the most qualified candidate.
I know, I know…people will say she is more qualified because she was bill’s wife, but being a First Lady doesn’t provide automatic Commander in Chief status.

The arrogance of a 46 year old punk stating he would never run at the bottom of the ticket as VP with her. Makes me dislike him and agree with Gerry he is lucky to be where he is at now. I am lifelong Dem and before Obama’s comments I thought I will get behind whoever wins, But now if Hillary is not on the ticket, I and a number of Dem friends have agreed we will vote Rep just to vote against arrogance. We don’t need another 4-8year of that!

Posted by: BBB1961 | March 11, 2008, 9:49 pm 9:49 pm

girlinvt, since that is the case, then why did hillary and wolfson go after Lazio as they did when she ran for the senate?
They disrupted his events for his returns. So the hypocrisy is just a tad overwhelming at this point, as she holds out on releasing her returns when Obama has already done so.
It makes people wonder, is there something to hide?

Posted by: LA in Indiana | March 11, 2008, 9:51 pm 9:51 pm

BBB1961, so then you understand how Obama supporters feel. The nastiness from hillary has been over the top. Is this the norm, for democrats to throw their opponent under the bus for the other side? Or are you hillary supporters just suffering from selective amnesia?
As someone stated yesterday, her offering him to be VP at this point in time, as he is ahead in all numbers with the exception of super delegates, is like trying to sell a house that she doesn’t own.

And if she or any of them IS a paid staffer, they should disclose that fact to the rest of us. I doubt ABC meant for these boards to become the province of professional political spinmeisters! It just smells bad. Let ‘em PAY for their advertising like everybody else! THAT’S WHAT!

I don’t know why Hillary Fans can’t just admit and Hillary MAY have made a mistake on the Irak War Vote.
To error is human and all……she is human isn’t she?
I mean you got 10 of thousand of dead and disabled Americans; even more Irakis, a 3 Trillion Dollar price tag.
You got the lost opportunity costs, i.e., toil and treasure that coulda been spent protecting the nation’s infrastructure, chemical plants, nuclear plants, ports, datasystems, etc. You got the negative goodwill throughout the world created by the war.
And UBL is still alive in Pakistan and the Taliban is reconstituting in Afghanistan.
This is not rocket science folks. Even Senator Colburn-OK has admitted that invading Irak may not have been a good idea.
Any takers? Could HRC have made a mistake?

obama-yikes, that has been the case over the years, so I’m glad you said that. At least it sounds like you have some understanding. Black people have a reason for mistrust, the past still hangs in the balance. It has only been what, 40 years since we have been ‘integrated’ into society. so true Commander Guy.
But I guess that is why some say she is getting desperate, as she doesn’t appear too concerned whether the information is true or false. As long as she gets vote because of it, who cares. We usually don’t find out until after the fact whether information like that was true or not, and then its too late to take back your vote.
I guess that is why hillary said she would release her taxes AFTER she is the nominee. You can’t take your vote back at that point.

LA in Indiana What Nastiness? She has done nothing over the top. Obama supporter as well as the press makes something out of nothing. Was it not Obama who was putting out false flyers in Ohio? If you are referring to 3:00am phone add that is not nasty that is legitimate question.
What experience does Obama bring to the table? Does he think he is going to march into DC and all the congress and lobbyist are just going to roll over and say “oh the Obama is here we all need to roll over and do as he says”?
Obama supporters are living in fantasy world if they think he is going to bring real change, To push this point look at last week, he’s campaign is caught writing the Canadians telling them “ not to worry about NAFTA changing we are just telling people that” then Obama aide Samantha Power telling British paper Hilary is “monster” . Now that is nasty! If you think Hilary is nasty, just wait and see if Obama wins the nod. The Rep’s will make Anything Hilary has done (nothing that I’ve seen) like mother Teresa. All I can say if he can’t take the heat get out of the Kitchen. Hillary is tested she has fought the right wing many times and knows how to handle them with poise and panache.

The news is that Ferraro said exactly the same thing about Jesse Jackson back in 1988.
So it looks like Ferraro is simply a lifelong racist.

Posted by: Druid | March 11, 2008, 10:36 pm 10:36 pm

BBB1961, if you don’t think hillary has been nasty, with her kitchen sink strategy, then we aren’t watching the same campaign race.
Nancy Pelosi, and I assume some of the Leadership, they do think hillary crossed the line, whether you want to believe it or not.
And Obama DID NOT, and I repeat DID NOT, do the wink/nod to the canadians. If you weren’t paying attention, and I guess you wouldn’t because they kept it quiet in the news after the fact, the canadians said it was not the Obama campaign, but the clinton campaign. Now I know you might want to quote conflicting stories, but that is what happened, and that is why the MSM stopped talking about it. But that was one of those lies that was pushed to the people of Ohio, and it worked.
And I’m sure there will be another lie or distortion of some sort pushed to the people in PA.
Obama has a hefty enough resume to be President of the United States, even though you may not agree.
Understand, Obama never said “change” would be easy. On the stump he states how difficult it will be, but he reiterates how important it is for people to be involved in their government. Transparency is extremely important to get anything done, and that is what he is pushing for. I’m sorry if you don’t agree with it.

Posted by: LA in Indiana | March 11, 2008, 10:37 pm 10:37 pm

Ferraro’s comment was taken as she intended it, a slur to get a new talking point out there for nervous white voters. Be afraid to vote for a black man because you can’t criticize him without being labelled racist.
Let me put myself out there to say that Hillary’s candidacy has done well by appealing to WOMEN, she has in particular captured unusually high vote percentages among older white women – this is what we call female sexism – tell the guys to move over because gosh, a woman can just do it better.
And not to mention, riding on her husband’s name… we don’t hear the OBAMA camp whining about unfair favoritism and Hillary’s position arising due to her husband’s presidency.
This whole story is nothing but gutter snipe politic’g by the Clinton camp and turns this voter away in revulsion.

before I sign off…I just wanted to remind you folks, hillary won NH by pushing a lie.
The lie she pushed quietly, was that Obama was against a woman’s right to choose. Even though he rec’d 100% rating from Planned Parenthood, she put the lie out on flyers to NH residents.
They bought into the lie, he lost NH.
Well have a good night all, and come back tomorrow to do this all over again.

LA in Indiana I am a news junkie! I had not heard the Canadian letter was from the Hillary camp! Must have feel asleep that day.
look we are going to have to agree to disagree.
I know this, if we don’t have a clear winner soon, we are going to tear our party apart and give the white house to the Rep’s.
Right now it is ours to lose!
A joint ticket would be the answer, but with Obama rejecting that it makes it hard. look Hilary could be on the bottom the ticket, but if you we want the party intact she has to be on the ticket. If not the party will be divided. For that matter she could run as independent and rip the party to pieces!

Posted by: BBB1961 | March 11, 2008, 10:47 pm 10:47 pm

Hillary clinton is NOT focused on campaign issues. Time and time again she and her surrogates evoke race to scare white voters and Ferraro’s just another racist. What a joke! Racism and Sexism are equally bad and for her to act as though Obama is somehow getting an advantage and that blacks are stupid and just follow the herd is ridiculous. Did anyone notice the large number of republicans crossing the line to vote for her in Mississippi? Just like in Texas, white Republicans are trying to give her the nomination because they know that McCain can beat her. And if she steals the nomination then I’m voting for McCain.

Big difference.
So we all know what BHO needs to do. Since Sinbad has said the closest thing to a red phone moment Hillary had on the trip was where the three of them would stop to eat.
It is Clear that if Obama wants to get the exerience he needs to be ready on DAY ONE. He must Find Sinbad and Sheryl Crow and visit the troops in Bosnia. For good measure he should take along “The Rock” and maybe even “Kid Rock” too.
This way he gain the requiste experience to put him on par with Hillary.

The Commander Guy, there is more to that to the red phone moment. As first lady, I’m sure she was there when husband took those calls at 3:00am she has seen it handled first hand.
She knows the world leaders not just from Photo op’s with celeb’s but from state dinners and white house meetings. I’m not saying she had top security clearance to know everything but she was for practical purposes present at 1600 Penn Ave, when many of the world crisis’s happened.
Obama has not a clue about world affairs. He wants to meet unconditionally with our enemies and bomb our allies (Pakistan) on war on terror. If he wins the nod and a terrorist crisis happens (like a 911) before the election McCain wins! He is too much of dove to stand up to hawk like McCain if there is crisis. Hilary on the other hand is tough as nails. Americans have no doubts she can handle our security. These are just my observations. The WH is ours to lose if we nominate the wrong person.

WE WERE LIED TOO AND AS SO WAS HILLARY!
As for Obama claims he was against it from the start, we really don’t know since he was not a member of the US senate when the vote took place. So he says “I would have voted no” it is like a solider saying if I become a POW saying I would never talk! We really don’t know because he was not there! TALK IS CHEAP! ACTION NOT WORDS!

Wikisource has Obama’s speech at an anti-war rally in Chicago in 2002, when he was in the Illinois senate. He was 100% against the war, and was very public about it.

Posted by: Rocky | March 12, 2008, 3:03 am 3:03 am

For starters, Hillary Clinton only rejected the comments (mildly) because she knew they were wrong and would hurt her campaign. But she also knew that plenty of white people who have been desensitized to racism would not see why such a comment would anger blacks. So she took the middle road, effectively playing to the sensitivities of both sides. Too bad this won’t be enough for black people who, like it or not, she will need to win in November.
Barack Obama is clearly extremely intelligent. He did not become the first black president of the Harvard Law Review because of affirmative action. He underwent a very rigorous process like everyone else and he earned the respect and trust of his peers.
He showed the same tenacity in Illinois when he was able to get legislation passed UNANIMOUSLY that had previously faced tough opposition from conservatives. (I am talking about a bill in Illinois that now requires that police officers videotape confessions and interrogations.) When he talks about reaching across the aisle and unifying people, there is a precedent. He has done it before and is the most likely to be able to do it again for the sake of this country. I would like to note that in doing this he had to reach out to people of all races and creeds–not just to blacks or whites.
Ferraro’s comments deserve much more scrutiny but do not expect the Saturday Night Live affected media to actually engage in investigative journalism delve into the underlying issues of why this was and is a fundamentally racist statement.
Finally, it cannot be said enough, Obama has ELEVEN years of experience as an elected official. Hillary Clinton has SEVEN.

Listen, Geraldine needs to go to sensitivity training to learn about racism. She should go, no matter how much flase indignation she portrays. She also needs to be reminded that Hillary wouldn’t be where she is if Bill hadn’t enjoyed her “feminine favors” at least at some point in time…

BBB1961, I don’t think Obama has drawn black voters in as much as the Clintons have driven them away. That is part of her strategy. Divide and conquer by marginalizing Obama as a black phenomenom…

Posted by: John | March 12, 2008, 10:33 am 10:33 am

You want to know why Obama is pulling in most of the Afican-American vote and the black folks are not voting for the wife of “the first Black President”:
From the Washington Post:
The Clinton camp ended up spending nearly $7 million in South Carolina, but Obama won in a landslide. On Jan. 26, the day of the election, Penn sent an e-mail to the senior campaign staff comparing Obama’s victory there to Jesse L. Jackson’s two wins in the 1980s. Bill Clinton made the same comparison to reporters that day, generating even more anger among African Americans who perceived it as a way of marginalizing Obama by portraying him as a black candidate who appeals only to black voters.
As Clinton strategists woke up the next morning, they realized that the African American constituency was permanently lost to her. Only then were some of his closest former aides, such as Sosnik, former White House lawyer Cheryl D. Mills and fundraiser Terence R. McAuliffe, tapped to talk with him about reining in his rhetoric, and a daily conference call was established to try to enforce it.

Posted by: Jeff | March 12, 2008, 12:34 pm 12:34 pm

Still, are her statements the uncensored ravings of a bigot – or yet Another example of the Clinton campaign playing the race card and then saying “who, me”? Comments like Ms. Ferraro’s play into the fears and resentments of some Lower-Income less educated white voters – the same voters who just so happen to be Sen. Clinton’s strongest voting bloc.
Mrs. Clinton should be LUCKY she was married to an ex-president or she would not be where she is. This statement should be laughed at, and women everywhere should be embarrased.

Are you Libs blinded, Obama would not be where he is if he was not Black! That is true. Why is it Racist to say that truth but yet not racist for Blacks to vote for him only because he is Black!
Libs love the Race Card!
By the way Barrack Hussein Obama must be a racist like the talk show host because he was recorded using his middle name!!

Posted by: spock | March 12, 2008, 2:06 pm 2:06 pm

Gerry was on the talk shows this morning. She is not part of the Clinton camp, and only serves the DNC as financial officer. The money she raises goes to the party. Not Hillary or Obama. I also understand she is Super delegate for the DNC. She said what she said was taken out of contents, during a speech she was giving concerning the DNC nomination race. She has not committed to either side.
So as she said: “resign! Resign from what I am not part of the Clinton camp”
She claims she was asked by the crowd: “why do you think a relatively unknown senator with little experience was doing so well” so she answered.
It is the Obama camp who has played the race card every time anyone says anything to criticize his campaign, or mentions his color.
He is using his race to make white people feel guilty if they don’t vote for him, because he is black. I can say these things because; I am an African-American and am ashamed of the way he is playing the race card. We did the same BS when OJ was acquitted and we all knew deep down he was guilty. The madness must stop and Obama is using his color to cry foul, for being criticized.
I was proud of him until they called foul in S.C. when Bill made a comment about Jesse Jackson, which was not racist, I did not take it that way. It was a fact! So you white people who think Obama is the great Black hope! Look closer he is playing the race card every time. No one can speak their mind or their racist in the Obama camp’s eyes.

Posted by: BBB1961 | March 12, 2008, 2:26 pm 2:26 pm

LOM and D, you do raise an excellent point. Here’s the answer.
exit pols make clear that far more obama supporters will support clinton in the general than vice-versa. In fact, Clnton has tried to make that very sad fact a SELLING POINT. And this is consistent with campaign tactics. Clinton is making damn clear she’ll take down the party to win the election. Obama — not so much.
Does that speak to you at all? The answer to your question is that Hillary supporters do not support the party to the extent Obama supporters do. Will you take that information — which you admit is significant — into account when forming your opinions about this race? If not, why not?

Would Ferraro dare to say that Clinton got where she got because she was the wife of the president?
Would Ferraro dare to say that Clinton (Clinton, not 1980 Geraldine) got where she was because she is a woman?
After all, it was easy for her to say, and repeat that Obama got there because he was black.
But of course not, she will not say anything like that about Hillary. But she dared to say that Obama is there because he was black.
Which prove the point that she discreminated between Obama and Hillary.
She is a racist, case in point.
And Hillary with her typical double standards doesn’t do anything serious about it while decrying the monster comment (and he accepted the resignation of his advisor), while confronting Obama to denounce Farrakhan(which he did) … which makes her accomplice to a racist.

Posted by: Yves | March 12, 2008, 3:52 pm 3:52 pm

In fact she did! It was during the same speech she gave when she mentioned about Obama. You don’t hear the Media or the Obama camp saying anything about that. Obama’s people clearly spin everything to be about race when it is their favor.
Gerry said, clearly in that same speech when ask about Hilary that she undoubtedly had advantaged from being a former first Lady. Unlike herself who was put on the ticket with Mondale in 84 to help win the women vote.
Obama’s people have desperate since Hillary is clearly looking more and more presidential and they trying to use the race card to muddy her face. Well most of us including some of us African-Americans can see through him.

It was obviously a calculated strategy because she said the same thing about Jesse Jackson in 1988.
“If Jesse Jackson were not black, he wouldn’t be in the race,” she said.
Really. The cite is an April 15, 1988 Washington Post story (byline: Howard Kurtz),
Here’s the full context:
Placid of demeanor but pointed in his rhetoric, Jackson struck out repeatedly today against those who suggest his race has been an asset in the campaign. President Reagan suggested Tuesday that people don’t ask Jackson tough questions because of his race. And former representative Geraldine A. Ferraro (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday that because of his “radical” views, “if Jesse Jackson were not black, he wouldn’t be in the race.”
Asked about this at a campaign stop in Buffalo, Jackson at first seemed ready to pounce fiercely on his critics. But then he stopped, took a breath, and said quietly, “Millions of Americans have a point of view different from” Ferraro’s.
Discussing the same point in Washington, Jackson said, “We campaigned across the South . . . without a single catcall or boo. It was not until we got North to New York that we began to hear this from Koch, President Reagan and then Mrs. Ferraro . . . . Some people are making hysteria while I’m making history.”

Ferraro’s comments could likewise be applied to Clinton: If HRC were a man, did not have a history-making aspect to her candidacy by virtue of her gender and her role as a former first lady, would she be where she is? Is her public service record really THAT impressive? Or, in the alternative, would anybody really be looking at her twice if her last name were SMITH or JONES? Really, now.
In my judgment, Clinton is intelligent & ambitious, but otherwise unremarkable. She is not unlike countless other strong, bright, motivated women in other professions. Obama is also intelligent & ambitious, but is quite remarkable. He has, in an incredibly abbreviated time period, been able to create positive perceptions in voters about who he is, who we are, what we can do, and where we should go as a country. This is truly remarkable because he is so young, and was vitually unknown just a couple years ago, not because he is black. Black is just a matter of fact (hey, that rhymes!)
Ferraro’s proposition that Obama’s advantage(race)is greater than Clinton’s advantage (gender)is not supported by fact. And how could you even measure that, anyway? This is just Ferraro’s interpretation…her way to explain a phenomenon. To dismiss Obama’s entire political existence in the national arena or attribute it to him being “lucky” to be black is beyond absurd.
Frankly, I think Ferraro’s frustrations and those of HRC & her supporters stem from the belief that Obama does not deserve the nomination for one reason: he has not “paid his dues” yet; age-ism pure and simple.

“With all due respect, your article, missed the boat all together.
Ferraro just doesn’t know the facts.
She must not know he’s half-white, he’s just dark.”

Dear Tom with all due respect, most all of us African Americans have white blood in us, that does not make us white. Even Holly Berry (Oscar winner) whose mother is white, is considered a black women in our community. We are proud of her but she is half white. Most of us AA are the descendants of slaves something Obama knows nothing about, since his black roots are from the African Continents and not the America’s. So believe me Ferraro knows her facts and she is right in what she says. I might add if Obama was an American born black (meaning descent of slaves) he would not be where he is now.
