McCain Loses Cool With NY Times Reporter
ABC News’ Bret Hovell Reports: Senator John McCain grew agitated Friday with a New York Times reporter who asked about his 2004 conversation with then-Democratic nominee John Kerry about McCain possibly running as Kerry’s vice presidential nominee.
Watch the VIDEO HERE.
McCain was addressing reporters on his campaign plane flying between Atlanta and New Orleans. He had just come from a town hall style meeting in Atlanta, where he was asked by a member of the audience whether he might consider Kerry as his vice president, the way Kerry had considered McCain.
"No. No," McCain said in the town hall meeting. “We have very vastly different philosophical fundamental political views. I respect those views. I respect them, I just totally disagree with them.”
McCain continued: “When I was approached, when we had that conversation back in 2004, I mean that’s why I never even considered such a thing.”
On the plane, the Times’ Elisabeth Bumiller, asked McCain about that meeting, quoting a 2004 story in which McCain said the meeting hadn’t taken place. McCain responded forcefully, his displeasure on display, but never raising his voice, telling Bumiller: “there is no living American in Washington” who doesn’t know about that meeting.
Bumiller pressed on, and McCain insisted that she knew of the meeting as well.
“You know it too. You know it. So I don’t even know why you ask.”
The back and forth went on for nearly two minutes before Bumiller asked a question on another topic. At that point, McCain resumed his more typical demeanor.
The following is an ABC News transcript of the conversation:
New York Times correspondent Elisabeth Bumiller: Senator can I ask you about Senator Kerry. I just went back and looked at our story, the Times story, and you told Sheryl Stolberg that you had never had a conversation with Kerry about being, about Vice President –
John McCain: Everybody knows that I had a private conversation. Everybody knows that. That I had a conversation. There’s no living American in Washington –
EB: Okay.
McCain: – that knows that, there’s no one.
EB: Okay
McCain: And you know it too. You know it. You know it. So I don’t even know why you ask.
EB: Well I ask because I just read –-
McCain: You do know it. You do know it.
EB: Because I just read in the Times in May of ’04 you said.
McCain: I don’t know what you may have read or heard of, I don’t know the circumstances. Maybe in May of 04 I hadn’t had the conversation –
EB: But do you recall the conversation?
McCain: I don’t know, but it’s well known that I had the conversation. It is absolutely well known by everyone. So do you have a question on another issue?
EB: Well can I ask you when the conversation was?
McCain: No. Nope, because the issue is closed as far as I’m concerned. Everybody knows it. Everybody knows it in America.
EB: Can you describe the conversation?
McCain: Pardon me.
EB: Can you describe the conversation?
McCain: No, of course not. I don’t describe private conversations.
EB: Okay. Can I ask you –
McCain: Why should I? Then there’s no such thing as a private conversation. Is there (inaudible) if you have a private conversation with someone, and then they come and tell you. I don’t know that that’s a private conversation. I think that’s a public conversation.
EB. Okay. Can I ask you about your (pause) Why you’re so angry?
McCain: Pardon me?
EB: Nevermind, nevermind.
McCain: I mean it’s well known. Everybody knows. It’s been well chronicled a thousand times. John Kerry asked if I would consider being his running mate.
EB: Right.
McCain: And I said categorically no, under no circumstances. That’s all very well known.
EB: Okay, let me ask you… (moves on to another question.)

Great, just great. Way to go, Republicans, this is OUR guy this time around.
Just brilliant. This guy is a total loan shark used-car salesman waiting to take over the Oval Office. No wonder most of our people want to vote for Obama.
Although, then there’s Michelle Obama… maybe she & McCain ought to compare notes on how to respond to the press.

I can’t believe this is the best the Republican party can offer up as the nominee…would you really want this cranky old coot in the oval office with his finger on the button? He’d answer the red phone at 3AM, and it wouldn’t be pretty. He’s not just like this with reporters, I’ve heard through the grapevine that he has treated others with the same cranky attitude – flight attendants in particular.

McCain will “swiftboat” himself, mark my words and the Real Democrats will win the election. And the war will continue. Our spending will stay out of control. We will lose more jobs overseas, and the inflation of prices will continue unabated. Think this election matters; It’s all a lie.

The media is trying to stereotype McCain.

I doubt this was entirely spontaneous. Yes he has a temper, but he is also trying to play to the right-wing base, and mouthing off to the NYT would be a good way of doing that, no?

I wonder if SNL will do a skit portraying the favoritism the press gives their fellow dems over repubs. Cuz I mean, come on, if Hillary wasn’t getting fair treatment, repubs are facing an inquisition.
They can’t even wait for the dems to have a nominee to start trashing McCain. I wonder if John complains a bit, if the press will start getting harsher on his opponent. NOT!

LOL He will get lots of coaching for debates. For all we know, he will get medicated by Karl Rove. But you can bet the RNC is going to do all it can to help him present a cool head image. Just before the TX vote, the campaign had announced he would be taking a break from the trail. He stated he would be taking that time to put plans and proposals together on the party’s policies, unite the party, and begin forming his cabinet after choosing a running mate. I wonder why that has not happened yet? Looks like someone needs a nap. LOL (Just a joke… he i obviously stressed by the race.)

McCain didn’t lose his cool.
You even admit in your piece that he didn’t raise his voice.
If he didn’t raise his voice how did he lose his cool.
So according to you if McCain has a disagreement that means he lost his cool.
This is not journalism. You are supposed to be unbiased. How can you call yourself a reporter.
If you want to lie about McCain then don’t call yourself a reporter.

Am I the only person who remembers that NYT ran a completely BS story attempting to implicate JSM in a sexual affair by using the words ‘innappropriate relationship’ to characterize his receiving money from a lobbyist. If an organization treats a man with that level of disrespect I don’t think they have reason to expect better in return.
Posted by: DangYankee | March 7, 2008, 1:38 pm 1:38 pm
he lied, he got caught in the lie and his response was to get terse with a reporter over it and refuse to anser the question. In effect saying, everyone knows he lied and that the meeting he said did not take place did and that we are just to continue ignoring that. 8 years of this crap is enough. Bush insist that we just ignore his WMD lies, then his terror lies and then his sowing democracy lies about Iraq. 4000 lives later we are no where, and the organization that was being 9/11 is stronger and bolder than ever. Virtually unchallenged in Afghanistan and OUR President says that the man ultimately behind 9/11 Osama Bin Laden, no longer matters. McCain supports this position. Enough, is enough.

Hey Winston, what about Obama bomb bomb Pakistan.
McCain’s was a joke not a policy position like Obama.
McCain knows more about war and peace than Hillary and Obama ever could.
McCain wants to withdraw our troops from Iraq responsibly.
Clinton is unqualified to be president.
She has no knowledge of foreign policy.
She flip flops on Iraq constantly.
Clinton lies saying she wasn’t for the war when their is a video of her two weeks before the war saying she is for the invasion.
Clinton has Gloria Steinham out bashing McCain for his service.
And this is who you wants as CIC.
Posted by: John | March 7, 2008, 1:40 pm 1:40 pm
It is not necessary to raise a voice to be perceived as losing one’s cool. Words, mannerisms, body language, facial expressions, tone, etc. all play a factor in perceptions. Be honest about that.
I think a video with audio is needed to really know how people will perceive him.
Posted by: DCVoter | March 7, 2008, 1:40 pm 1:40 pm
I don’t think you want video of McCain losing his cool on the internet. It would set off too many filters. LOL. But seriously, I want to see HRC losing it. Don’t tell me that woman doesn’t get angry when she doesn’t get her way. I wanna see the footage of her after she found out that BHO won New Hampshire.

Louis McCain is qualifed to be CIC.
Hillary Clinton isn’t qualified to even stand on the same stage as our brave men and women.
She used our troops for political gain.
She was for the war for years when it was popular then switches for political gain lying about how she wasn’t for it when she is on tape being for it.
Hillary voted against an amendment that would have stopped military action in Iraq.
Clinton is a flip flopper.
Even now she is lying about Iraq. Saying publicly she will remove troops right away while her advisers are saying in the background that is just for political gain.
Hillary NEVER wore the uniform.
She has no clue how to deal with foreign affairs.
Hillary thought Musharraf was running in the recent presidential election.
Hillary didn’t pass her DC bar exam.
Hillary is stealing Bubba’s resume.
Hillary didn’t make it on her own. Bubba got her the job at the law firm and got her everything.
Hillary talks about sticking up for children but in 1972 accused a 13 year old rape victim of liking older women.
The detective in that case says Hillary had no evidence to make that accusation.
Hillary Clinton is a fraud.
She is a joke. She isn’t qualified to be CIC.
Hillary said Nafta was great for American and New York.
Hillary is on tape praising Nafta.
Now she lies saying she was against it.
Then she calls Canadian embassy saying take it was a grain of salt yet bashes Obama for the same thing.
Hillary Clinton is a serial liar.

C’mon Folks, anyone is better than Obama
Obama has lied to the American people time after time, Flip flops on everything, and double talks and talks around direct questions, or even his platforms.
He wants to be president for his own personal goals and to make history.
Other wise he would of taken his Senator job seriously and voted, and tried to change things.
If it wasn’t for his high price advisors
he wouldn’t know much about what he talks about.
It is a shame, all the ones who dropped out of the race, could not keep up with the purse strings he is attached to.

DangYankee – I think you are mistaken on NH because she won NH but I dont know which loss you are referring to. LOL It is a tough campaign and anyone would be up and down with wins and losses. This instance was unrelated to the campaign because it referred to a past campaign where he had been caught in a lie of denial. Apparently the reporter struck a nerve.
Over the years and recently we have seen all of them angry on video. Clinton comes across to me as strong but not condescending. McCain comes across as strong but condescending.
Obama comes across as both weak and condescending. His inability to show executive decision making strength several times in the campaign supports that perception. But McCain is perceived as one that would make hotheaded rash decisions if he felt his hack was against the wall (as he has shown on several occasions in his career.)
I will give McCain credit for not always looking down his nose at Clinton and not always reaching out to touch her – which I think is totally disrespectful. Obama does this repeatedly. He also crosses boundaries in the way he addresses women he does not know, ie. a woman elder he does not know should not be referred to as sweetie in a flirtacious manner.
Obama shouldnt reach out to touch Clinton in the debates every time she has made a point that he cant argue effectively. This behavior comes across as a man dismissing what a woman says and is inappropriate. He doesnt try to do that with the male candidates and has no right to do that with her anymore than Bush had the right to be presumptuous and try to give Merkel a shoulder massage. (Merkel of Germany was offended and demanded an apology. She was right.)
Men need to understand that this type of behavior is not appropriate with all women. In fact, touching a person without their permission can be construed as assault in some areas.
Being deaf, (about 40% hearing), I have to read lips, read closed captioning, read body language, and am more attuned to inflection than the hearing community. This actually allows me to not be prejudiced by voices as so many of the prejudicial statements have been made about people (men and women) in positions of power relating to their voice.
However, McCain’s reputation (earned by his actions) over the years is not just as a maverick… he is perceived as a hothead and rightfully so. This might be appropriate for certain jobs but as President, life-ending decisions have to be made and people have to feel confident he will not make a rash one as a hothead. He will have to work hard to convince voters that he has matured and mellowed into a cool headed decision maker and this type of instance can definitely hurt him.

Sounds like McCain has taken a page from the Rudy Guiliani school of Media Relations. Any seasoned politician should know that when they are caught in an outright lie, smile, maintain there is no discrepency between the lie you told and the truth we know, and call for another question. Making a scene just gives the press a reason to do a story on the issue, which is what happened here, and the politician comes off as a hothead, which is also what happened here.

McCain wants to lead a humble foreign policy. His advisers talk about it constantly.
McCain isn’t the one who said we should invade pakistan.
McCain wants to withdraw from Iraq responsibly be handing it over to iraqis and coming home.
McCain knows how awful war is.
Hillary doesn’t have a clue about war.

It is amazing to me that a member of the press would ask the same question over and over again. Apparently they are trying to make some kind of point about John McCain. Well, as an American, who is a Democrat, and who is working, and supporting, and voting FOR John McCain for President of the United States, I can tell you that is why he is such a strong candidate… he DOES NOT put party first.. he puts his country first.. something that people like Hillary and Obama know little or nothing about.
McCain put his country first when he wore the uniform for his country, and he has consistently put his country first when making decisions and sponsoring good, effective legislative ideas in the Congress. At least he can claim to be ‘above” the politics of right and left.. and is for the politics of getting something done for the American people, for the good of the country. That’s what we need, and that is why he has my vote.

McCain needs to learn a lesson.
Stop having the press on the back of the bus and talking to them on the back of the plane all the time.
Be like obama and clinton who almost never interact with the press openly.
The press is out to get McCain to get a democrat elected.
They will over dramatize everything.
They will take your words out of context.
They will run garbage page 1 headlines that should be in the gossip section.
They will outright lie.
They will try and stereotype you in a negative way.
STAY AWAY FROM THEM THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS.

You are a disgrace.

If McCain disagress with a reporter you run front page headline McCain loses temper.
You reporters are outrageous in your lies.

But McCain disagress with a NY Times reporter and the media goes beserk.

They are a periodical struggling to remain relevant to an increasingly indifferent audience. Face it, NYT, American has largely caught on to your tricks. They are being so obvious in their effort to play gotcha with John McCain it is almost laughable. They couldn’t make the affair allegations stick, then they try to posit that McCain cannot legally serve as president, and now they bait him trying to make him lose his temper.

“I am a war criminal,” McCain said on “60 Minutes” in 1997. “I bombed innocent women and children.” Although it came too late to save the Vietnamese he’d killed 30 years earlier, it was a brave statement. Nevertheless, he smiles agreeably as he hears himself described as a “war hero” as he arrives at rallies in a bus marked “No Surrender.”
“A proven leader, and a man of integrity,” the New York Post called John McCain in its editorial endorsement. “A naval aviator shot down over North Vietnam and held as a POW, McCain knew that freedom was his for the taking. All he had to do was denounce his country. He refused–and, as a consequence, suffered years of unrelenting torture.”
“I am a black criminal and I have performed the deeds of an air pirate,” McCain wrote in his confession. “I almost died and the Vietnamese people saved my life, thanks to the doctors.”

Nelly for you to compare McCain to Bush is such juvenile gutter politics like the DNC practices.
McCain for stem cell research, bush against.
McCain against drilling in Anwr, Bush for it.
McCain for importing prescription drugs from Canada, Bush against it.
McCain against earmarks, Bush for them.
McCain served his country in war, bush didn’t.
McCain is the complete opposite of bush on global warming and the enviornment.
I could go on and on.
For the dems to lie and compare someone like McCain to Bush is juvenile.
All you dems can do is lie.
Because the real record of McCain is integrity and honor so instead you try and smear him with your petty nasty attacks.

McCain for closing Gitmo, Bush against.
They have vastly different records.
But that won’t stop the dems from lying to the american public and saying McCain would be a third Bush term.
It gives me the creeps to see Howard Dean who was sking in Vermont during Vietnam lying about his bad back to smear McCain.

If America elects the party of Howard Dean and their childish juvenile attacks against McCain then that is a shameful day in american politics.
Howard Dean isn’t fit to shine McCain’s shoes.

McCain didn’t lose his cool. The reporter lost their cool trying to manipulate the truth rather than discover it. McCain was provoked in a disgraceful manner and maintained his composure. This is a leader who doesn’t check in with the right or the left for his political views and that is why he’s such an easy target and would make a great president.

For all you “believers” who think that Obama or Clinton will withdraw from Iraq, go read Andrew Sullivan’s blog. He makes the point that neither one is being honest about getting out of Iraq. Both will keep us in there infinitum. Wake up dems … it ain’t gonna happen.
Posted by: Howard Deam | March 7, 2008, 3:05 pm 3:05 pm
Msirt you want McCain to diss Bush in the rose garden as a guest?
McCain’s strategy for Iraq is to continue turning over areas to the Iraqis and withdrawl our troops in a reasonable manner.
McCain said it will be for the iraqis to deal with the insurgency in the coming years while our troops will come home.
McCain isn’t like Bush. To compare them is utter stupidity.
McCain knows the horrors of war first hand.
He will bring our troops home with honor.

Posted by: Jerry | March 7, 2008, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm
McCain never said there would be a war in Iraq for 1000 years.
He said he would only allow our troops to help train iraqis if it was a peaceful situation and americans weren’t taking casualties.
Iraq still needs their air force trained.
He said he would leave a very small presence there at the embassy and to train the iraqi air force.
But dems lied and took his comments out of context.
That is how you get ahead in american politics today if you are the democrats. They have no limit to their lies to the american people about mccain.
Posted by: John | March 7, 2008, 3:09 pm 3:09 pm
What does bringing the troops home one way or the other have to do with his ‘anger management’ issue and the fact that he will only get us into further trouble. I don’t know that the USA can ‘afford’ to support anymore wars. And I mean that literally. The +surplus we had when President Bill was in office is long gone and now a -deficit. Thanks to these piddly ‘stimulation packages’ that Bush throws out like bones. THAT’S the reason our country is full of foreclosures, etc like it is today! Hey someone has to pay for the millions a DAY for this war and we still haven’t gotten BIN LADEN!

Tara if you knew McCain’s record you would know that he wants to lead a humble foreign policy.
He has a great relationship with our allies in europe. He wants to close down Gitmo.
He has attended Nato conferences in Europe the last 20 years. He knows almost all the world leaders personally.
He wants to negotiate to settle issues.
THE MEDIA STEREOTYPE OF MCCAIN IS A LIE AND IT IS A DISERVICE TO AMERICAN DEMOCRACY.

He knows the horror of war.
McCain wants to lead a humble foreign policy reaching out to our allies.

I meant McCain NEVER voted for waterboarding.
The bill had hundreds of provisions in it.
Research why McCain voted against it.
The dems stacked the bill with terrible provisions separate from the waterboarding issue.
They did this for political gains.
McCain showed courage voting against the other provisions even though he knew the dems would go out and lie and smear him.
By the way guess where Hillary and Obama were for the vote on that bill.
They both didn’t show up.
But McCain shows courage and gets smeared and Obama and Hillary are praised.

Oh, please. The excuse-making for McCain is absolutely pathetic. Contrary to the myth of liberal media bias, McCain has been coddled by the press for years. Once again, the essence of the story is being ignored. The “straight talker” was confronted with yet another LIE that he told about whether or not he met with someone: he previously lied about not having the conversation with Kerry that the entire country now knows about, just as he lied when he claimed he never met with Lowell Paxson.

Sky another distortion from the media about McCain.
McCain never said he didn’t know anything about economics.
He said he was stronger in national security.
McCain was commerce committee chairman.
He knows plenty about economics.
All McCain said is his best area was national security and the media used that to distort him by saying he knows nothing about economics.
The main stream media is 85 percent democratic and that isn’t healthy for democracy in america.
We will end up with a one party system unless the balance is changed.

Well, I watched the video. He seemed disgusted with the question, but he didn’t lose his temper. I imagine he doesn’t like the times or that reporter. I don’t like the times, but they are a legitimate rag and he needs to deal with them professionally if he is elected. What he needs to do – and I am a little surprised he hasn’t learned this by now – is to say no comment with a smile and move on.
Posted by: Mark | March 7, 2008, 4:02 pm 4:02 pm
John – the video was added within the story LOL. It actually goes on with more details than he reported.
The point here is this – the media’s job in campaigns is to vet the candidates. That means push them into stressful situations, ask the hard questions, investigate the facts, and report the results. They are not good at investigating facts anymore because their job has become all about money (increasing ad revenues and readership).
If McCain cant handle an itty bitty question like this one, how are voters supposed to expect he has the maturity and calm to be an effective president and also work with leaders of other countries without offending them into bombing us?

I must follow up. The news media in America have been pushing for a long time an Obama presidency… not a Hillary or McCain one.. but an Obama one.. this is very clear. The news media is trying its best to MAKE NEWS… they figure this: the country is hungry for new faces, new stories, a new era.. they are saying, or trying to say to all of us… let’s make some history here, let us build up, butter up and make this Obama candidate the next President of the United States.. we would have a great new story to tell on how far we Americans have come overcomming race, etc. and isn’t all this just wonderful??? This Obama talks like King, inspires like Kennedy isn’t he just wonderful?? Yet all of us know, that Obama could not carry JFK’s baggage of international affairs or foreign policy creditentials, and he certainly couldn’t carry ML King’s luggage off the plane.
This guy is an “empty” shell of nothing, and if it is he against John McCain, I feel so sorry for the news media.. because there grand plan will not prevail.. the American people are smarter then all this… for my country’s future I hope so…

I don’t see why this has become such a big deal. If someone was twisting my words and asking me the same question over and over, I would get stern with them as well. Who wants to have words put into their mouth? As a teacher I do the same with my students when they start twisting things around, but I don’t blow up and neither did McCain.
Posted by: Nate | March 7, 2008, 4:08 pm 4:08 pm
John – He didn’t loose his temper, but he could have handled the question better. Its his military background – trust me, the military fighting men don’t like the press. I always vote republican – go ahead and start sending the hate mail now, everyone – but I do admit he needs to learn to handle the questions he doesn’t like a little better.
Posted by: Mark | March 7, 2008, 4:10 pm 4:10 pm
I heard the video (don’t remember his exact words) where he said economics was not his expertise. At the time, I couldn’t believe a presidential candidate would be stupid enough to say that. I think Bush would have, but he had Rove guiding his every move and speech so he wouldn’t make that kind of misstep. I will give McCain a star for his honesty on that, but dumb, dumb, dumb. The democrats will be playing that video all through the campaign while the dollar sinks, gasoline prices, food prices, etc. go up and up and people are losing their homes and can’t afford medical insurance. If he would have had a lick of sense, he would have commented that he had a great economic package that he would unveil as the campaign moves along. So, the republicans hope they can run against Hillary. I think the democrats can’t wait to run against “I don’t know anything about economics” McCain. He did say he had Greenspan’s book. I suppose he thinks we believe he absorbed its principles through osmosis.

So how exactly is a reporter asking him to explain blatantly contradictory statements “harassing” him?
I know, she should have been asking him questions like “What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?” and “Ronald Reagan… a great president or our greatest president?”
Who does she think she is? Asking him a reasonable question and expecting an answer?”
Yes, I’d get upset too if I obviously contradicted myself and someone called me on it. After 8 years of W, he knows he should be ready for that.
He could take a page from the white house press secretary and just deny it ever happened…

Much ado about nothing. That’s what this is. This is not what I would call ‘losing your cool.’ McCain is the best candidate now, just as he was the best candidate 8 years ago. If Obama or Hillary is elected we’ll have social programs pushing America deeper into debt and taxing Americans at greater margins. And when it gets ‘hard, real hard,’ Hillary will cry about it in a coffee shop.

I think we are in serious trouble in November. We have Obama who can’t even answer simple debate questions without relying on his advisors, we have McCain who gave the press “ammunition” needlessly on a plane without clearly thinking his statements through, and then there is Hillary Clinton. This woman has been surrounded by scandal after scandal long before Bill ever sat in the oval office with over 40 suspicious murders, suicides, and other unexplainable deaths since the late 90′s. Research the Clinton Body Count and see all the people that were dispatched after getting in the Clintons’ way. After 8 years of constant war, looks like we are forced to pick the lesser of two evils in November again….

What gets me is that people are so obsessed that they are going to get taxed more. I agree with you. The government should learn some fiscal responsiblity. Yet who is screaming about a worse loss of your income which comes from inflation and the devaluing of the dollar. Your once one dollar bill soon becomes worth 75 cents, then 50 cents. And who is responsible for all this?
Try George W. Bush and his republican collaborators. Why do they care? They can raise prices (oil companies, health insurance companies, etc.) to offset these losses and make even more money.
Republicans are the great taxers; it’s just that they are sneaky about it. Democrats may be for welfare for the poor, but republicans are for welfare for the rich.

The media blares some nonsense about “he’s losing his cool,” and the reporter, good therapist that she is, helps out with “why are you angry?” A fair reading of the video here would suggest that he didn’t lose his cool. Once again the media overplays (as it does with its anointing of this or that candidate having “momentum.” Can we turn, please, to modest little matters such as the economy, health care, and the fact that we are living in dangerous times in a dangerous world?

AJ – bringing back isn’t a bad idea. Perhaps if there was a draft, Americans would be more proactive in letting their congressmen know how they feel about the war. I don’t agree with the Iraq war, but we’re there now and must help stabilize Iraq. Our congressmen, Clinton included, allowed our troops to be sent. Where were the protests then? Many of us here at home say we support the troops, but would never join the military. We place a yellow ribbon on the back of our gas guzzling SUV. We sit at Starbucks, sipping espresso and complain about the war. What sacrifices have we made? The most outspoken, for and against the war, seem to be people with family in the military. That is, those who have genuinely made sacrifices. The rest of America complains now and not when war was waged. Bring back the draft and I don’t believe congressmen or citizens will be so willing to go to war without weighing all the options.

Suppose it were Ahmadinejad asking the questions and badgering McCain . . . and yes, the stupid NYT report was badgering him . . . would you expect McCain to keep his cool then as well?
This is simply another NYT ploy to get at McCain — nothing more, nothing less.
The left-wing media (NYT) has done nothing but paint the most inaccurate picture of what’s going on in Iraq. They’re almost every bit as bad as the Iranian regime.
McCain didn’t lose his temper. Anyone would get tired of answering the same question 20 times. Think about it.

Seator McCain…thank you for standing up to the nitwit reporter. Of course, nitwit is rather harsh for someone who has no idea what a real interivew is — heir apparant to her own cause of instances that mean nothing in a presidential campaign.. as it stands now.
I’d have dismissed her, and walked away.

Where are we going to get the money for more war? Every war supporter should be the only people obligated to fund the wars, present or future. Only the rich kids should be drafted! Including the Bush twins!

What a bunch of screwballs… Tara… You lay it on pretty heavy, don’t you.. I just want to get some things straight.. You Liberals are telling us that your Liberal candidate will immediately end the war in Iraq?? You’re telling us that McCain is less trustworthy, concerning our economy and the military?? You’re telling us that the Libs will give the people “more freedom”. That the Libs won’t deficit spend as much as the Conservatives. That the Liberals won’t lose their temper as much as McCain?? Well.. son of a gun!! Of course we should vote for Liberals, then.. Trouble is…WHO says that they’re all these things???? THEY are not saying it!!! Why do you??

It wasn’t any liberal that has squandered $3 trillion of our tax money on an unncessary war. How about spending something on roads, bridges, and schools instead of dumping it into a desert black hole. We will never get this money back. It isn’t being invested in things we can use. It is a sink hole the size of Iraq. A certain very small group of rich elites are becoming richer while the rest of us are becoming poorer. The liberals are small time spenders compared to conservative war spenders.

Of course he loses his cool. The NY Times is nothing more than a left wing front for the Democratic party. This nobody girl is trying to make a name for herself by bringing up an inconsequential conversation that took place four years ago.
How would you like being pestered constantly over stupid crap? Hey, remember that time you didn’t do the dishes back in 2004? Can you explain why? What was your thinking? Argh!! Move on!

This is the second or third comment I have read about John McCain’s temper. Bob Dole says he has a bad temper “possibly from being caged and tortured for six years by the Vietnamese”. I am beginning to wonder if we want someone with anger management issues at a minimum and potentially other, deeper psychological problems, as president. I don’t mind having a troubled war hero as 1 of 100 senators, but I am not sure I want a troubled person as our 1 president. We have just had 8 years with a president who has no problems lying to us, or allowing torture. I don’t want more of this for possibly another 8 years.

i don’t see anything wrong with the senator’s response. the media is trying to bait him.

I’ll tell you why, my dearest Tara. Because if we pull our troops out, then we might as well convert to Islam. Your new name would be “Tariq.”
If we pull out fast — which both Clinton and Obama say they want to do — and the Iraqis are not ready to take control, then the whole d@mn thing will go to hell in a handbasket again.
A two-year Senator with only a knack for charismatic speeches (NOTE: Obama only speaks to the two telepropters on either side of his head during his speeches — never straight forward) is not enough to lead this country. Nor is a power-hungry, rule-breaking witch in red with a self-serving agenda gonna get my vote, either. She’s unliked by her own peers.
McCain is honest, trust-worthy and would truly put the country’s best interests ahead of his own.
Look, I don’t mind going a little to the left every once in a while. It’s not a bad idea, but guess what — both of your candidates are unqualified.
Posted by: Dan | March 7, 2008, 5:36 pm 5:36 pm
Bush’s endorsement should be enough to know that McCain is not well fit to be the president.
Bush has turned out to be the most anti-conservative republican ever to be president.
Since when is being conservative mean you have to agree blindly with republican candidates? When does being conservative mean you have to believe that its the United States job to stabilize the middle east?
Bush and McCAIN are a bunch of unpatriotic war mongers who care nothing for the constitution or states rights.
No wonder Kerry choose McCain.

I guess that I will have to cross party lines this time a give Hillary my support. She seems to be the only qualified opponent this time. McCain is a coot. Obama has zero experience and Hillary is the most conservative of the 3 so if she wins her party nomination she will get my Republican vote. I do have confidence in her ability to confront the issues. In another post someone said that we need Jeb Bush. I think that we have all been Bush-Whacked enough over the years.

msirt hit it right on the head regarding Iraq, Bush and Senator McCain:
Oh, and BTW, John M., this country will never leave Iraq with honor because our going in was DISHONORABLE IN THE FIRST PLACE!
Since Senator McCain continues to publicly declare total commitment to the Iraq debacle – essentially continuing the Bush Doctrine – he absolutely has no business in the White House.
msirt, with a few words, accurately sketched Senator McCain’s ability (or lack therof) to execute the duties of U.S. President. NICELY DONE, MSIRT!

I’m not a big McCain fan, but this reporter was clearly trying to bring up old news in an attempt to corner or embarass him. When you think about it, there was no real answer to the question she asked. McCain receiving an unsolicited inquiry from Kerry 4 years ago is a non-issue, so I can’t imagine why it’s an issue now.
Posted by: LongT | March 7, 2008, 6:11 pm 6:11 pm
Since when does anyone have to be nice to a reporter? Since they have to pass no tests, take no oath, have no legal authority and are immune to screw ups and scream protection under the constitution, why should anyone treat them with anymore respect than they treat others. John McCain has been more available and open with the press than the evasive Hillary or the “5 questions to a press conference” Obama who refuses more questions than he answers.

I said this elsewhere but this is no example of a man losing his cool. He was perhaps testy towards this young reporter but where is it written that one has to act as if they’re on their first date when responding to a media shill.
When you also consider that she works for the New York Enquirer, I mean Times, you can say that McCain was being too kind to this representative of the most biased media outlet in America.
It’s also old news so get over it. Good for McCain.

Those continuing to shield Senator McCain from queries about his position, let us not forget one BIG simple truth:
In 2004, Senator Kerry asked Senator McCain to join his campaign as his V.P. This would have been revolutionary in the world of politics and the administration of government. Senator McCain refused.
This, to me, declares that Senator McCain puts himself and his Party ahead of the public good. Additionally, anyone who is not suspect that the RNC directed him to refuse the offer – under a promise of the 2008 nomination – is not totally opening their eyes. In fact, there have been repeated comments from the Republican Party that “. . . it’s his turn.”
No, folks, Senator McCain had a superb opportunity to tell the U.S. – and the world – that it was power before people. 2004 was the most telling about Senator McCain’s character, or lack thereof. Let’s stop bringing up what Senator McCain did 40 years ago, and deal with who and what he is today. It is far more relevant.

Was this a case of the MSM trying to make McCain look bad just to draw attention away from the disgusting tactics by their two Candidates??? Yes, it was a New York Times reporter asking the question, but it was ABC that filmed it and made a fuss about it with a link to the video. If the Times had done something with this interview, I can see the point of all your anger. But they weren’t responsible for any publication about it!

Most US Presidents had testosterone. Truman comes quickly to mind, JFK, Nixon, Bushes I and II. Some US Presidents did not. When a bully tries to take over the playground, it takes a kid with testosterone to come to the rescue. Two of the three persons who might be the next President have testosterone. Some of us voters don’t at all mind seeing a candidate get mad.

I think you news people titled it such because he got the best of you and you don’t like that. So much reporting is so biased, it’s not funny. I have a good deal of respect for all three of the viable candidates. If any of the three qualifies as an expert on the carnage, chaos and destruction of warfare and is in a position to speak out against war, it would have to be John McCain. I’m dismayed by Mr. McCain’s embracing this war. I could never vote for anyone who thinks war is the best answer to a problem. As far as the video of his rant, I agree that it wasn’t really a major loss of cool. He just needed to stop cutting the reporter off…that’s what made him look out of control.

Your statement on the surge is 90% inaccurate. Every General, most politicians and most of America would say the “SURGE” is working. I agree that there are going to be casualties resulting from a strategy such as one like the “Surge”. However, war must be fought in a much more “Politico” fashion in today’s world. I believe catching the first train out of Iraq is the most immoral thing we could do at this time. The freedom loving citizens of Iraq need us. We need to fight this scum outside of the Unied States and exterminate it in the Middle East, not here.
Lastly, we are fighting the Taliban and Al Queda throughout the world…Including those in IRAQ. To say, that we’re not show’s the ignorance of one that wants to live in a world that no longer exists since that day in September…The day when your loved ones and my loved ones perished due to a group of individuals that exist all over this world. We as a Nation maybe in big trouble. McCain may not have the right temperment for the job, Obama may be too young and inexperienced. Hillary may be our best bet given the choices we are presented with. Whether or not you agree with Hillary she has been around the block a couple of times even if it has been as a Senator, First Lady, on boards for whomever, etc.. As a middle aged person I look for that. I am sure some people in higher management have colored their hair partially gray because they felt as a CEO the people under them would not take them seriously if they looked too young. I agree. Although, I think that may be changing with the younger upcoming generations. And, yes, kids are smart, however, maturity takes time. And, if you are too old one may become cranky or have short temperment. Anyone have grandparents or older parents? Think about it. Inaddition, do we really want 4 more years of Republican in the WH? Has any Republican ever been in the WH without war while in office?

Sure, we all know it happened, but it’s very legitimate to ask him why he didn’t tell the truth in 2004. I think the question should be asked again in front of the nation in a debate. Lets hear the answer, the spin, the BS. And this is the “Straight Talk” we can look forward to?

McCain subscribes to a sort of 19th century model of imperialism: i.e., using the military to make the world safe for democracy and do so through interventionist, action. McCain is actually more explicitly militaristic than even George Bush.
Four years before Bush adopted the Neo-con doctrine of preemptive war, John McCain was running on a campaign of “rogue state rollback”. That is what he called it. In his doctrine, America was supposed to go anywhere there is an authoritarian dictatorship and help the insurgents any way possible and support them MILITARILY. McCain’s is an even MORE radical, interventionist approach than George Bush’s.
And then, when it comes to his relationship with the American people, McCain has the same Bush attitude, that when he is put in charge, it is his job to make things work, and do so, if necessary, without the constraints that the constitution puts on the presidency. McCain has sort of a “national greatness” type of conservatism which pushes a militaristic component. We are all supposed to sacrifice ourselves to the greater cause as he defines it. So McCain will continue
the precedent of an imperial presidency, with gutted checks and balances, a watered down due process, and where necessary, suppression of civil liberties. McCain, though, is outside of the mainstream hard-core right wing, but he has been very much sucking up to them since 2004 and 2005, as an attempt to win the presidency. So he’s re-inventing himself as a Bush-conservative and will subscribe, with them to to throwing out the whole concept of limited government and doing whatever it takes to win elections.
He may be making a mistake to pander, however. Now with the recession and the failure of and cost of the Iraq War, the country is waking up and seeing the problem with conservative policy-making from the federal government. But among the Party faithful, still, you see people who didn’t support him in the campaign nevertheless lining up behind him: both neo-con warriors who want more war, and right wing evangelicals who want to push their social conservatism.
So you self-described ‘independent’ think twice if you are considering voting for John McCain, I would tell you to be afraid of any President McCain. He has the tight wing mind of an authoritarian and is not really a maverick.

What will McCain do when pressed on real issues, like the contract recently awarded to the French consortium Airbus, to replace America’s fleet of aging KC135 military air refueling aircraft. If you recall McCain was instrumental in having the contract pulled from Boeing. Last Friday a Boeing spokesperson reported the award to Airbus would result in the loss of 9,000 American jobs. Now McCain is running around talking about protecting American jobs. Looks as though he didn’t give much thought when he went ballistic over the no-bid Boeing contract in 2000 and had it pulled.

As an independent, I haven’t decided yet but some of the media and other (you) people are just looking for ways to crucify a totally understandable act of indignation towards a naive or just plain ignorant journalist who is wasting, yes wasting a candidate’s valuable time on a totally irrelevant issue.

Bad headline and an annoying reporter. At least Senator McCain didn’t walk away from her like Senator Obama does when he doesn’t like the questions. McCain let her know he was annoyed by her badgering and by the NYT bias, but he certainly didn’t lose his cool. When you read this article and comments, makes it sound like he went off half-cocked. More bad journalism.
And let’s not forget that NYT piece of rumor-mongering pretending to be journalism that falsely accused McCain of having an affair with a lobbyist. There’s no proof and both parties deny it. That’s what you expect from the National Enquirer, not the NYT.
I’m for Senator Clinton, but if Senator Obama wins, then my vote goes to Senator McCain. Our country has serious problems and we need serious solutions, which are most likely to come from more seasoned and mature individuals.
Obama loves to compare himself to JFK, but it was under JFK’s inexperienced watch that we got the Bay of Pigs, which could have escalated into nuclear war, and JFK was also the one who starting escalating Vietnam. Not someone I want my Presidential candidate emulating!

Shouldn’t the caption read “McCain Loses Cool With New York Times Agent Provocateur.” After the Pink Lady’s recent stunts, I am surpised McCain even lets them travel with him. I think the reporter’s last line “Can I ask why you are so angry . . . nevermind” tells us all we need to know.
Posted by: cavan | March 8, 2008, 8:52 am 8:52 am
Why is your candidate worth voting for? We have to pull this together to align behind a candidate. If all we can say is bad things about the other candidate then your candidate isn’t worth voting for. Do the research, understand your candidate and explain why you are voting for them or why I should. Get the facts “if that is possible” give examples! Give links. This negative stuff just angers and does nothing to choose a good President based on informed decision. Keep it POSITIVE .

It was an amazingly unprofessional performance by yet another N.Y. Times reporter with an agenda. Why are you so angry? What kind of unbiased question is that? Is she a therapist? Besides, McCain didn’t look angry to me, he just looked annoyed, and with good reason. McCain should have asked her what the point was in dredging up old news. Isn’t there anything current she could ask about?

“Lose’s his Cool”? I don’t think so. He stated a FACT! Deal with it!
Go ahead Mr. President, tell it like it is!

An anthropologist once pointed out to me the difference in a white collar definition of aggression and the blue collar definition. Raising your voice is losing your cool to some segments of society. Anything short of physical contact is self control to others.
I don’t think McCain lost his cool. He simply responded to the repeated question with a repeated answer and tried to avoid further ridiculousness by responding with increased firmness. If someone could classify this as “losing his cool” the actions of Ms. Heinz-Kerry a few years ago could be classified as no less than first degree murder.

Actually, the American taxpayer ought to be the ones angry at Sen. McCain especially if you’re concerned about jobs going overseas. Sen. McCain played a primary role in sending the contract to build Airforce tankers to Airbus instead of Boeing. He pressured the Airforce to ignore the Europeon government provided subsidies that allowed Airbus to undercut Boeing. So much for supporting the American economy and workers. Thanks, McCain!

McCain didn’t lose his temper. I saw the video. He was simply emphatic about the points he was making. He didn’t shout, he didn’t use profanity, and he wasn’t disrespectful. This is coming from someone who’s not even a McCain supporter.

I think that Obama tries to impress people by saying that he will make a change. His time as senator, he also said this,so if he’ll do what he says, we’ll see.Hilary dont know, she says whatever the people want to hear, and not what she really thinks. Sometimes she’ll say she’s for something and then a couple weeks later,[in a different state]shell say she;s against it.So I don’t know if we could trust her. Many people say that she’s had much experience, but so has Mcain. When Mcain was trying to tell the reporter that he wasn’t going to say anything, the reporter kept on,and on. If somebody kept asking me the same question, over and over,I would prob. get a little mad too.

I have one question since MCCain’s citizenship was raised on one of the new station what is the outcome is he a BORN U.S. CITIZEN or not. If he is not a citizen of these U.S. then the republican party need another candiate. If this is not addressed fully it will set precedent and cause others to try and run for president in the future who are not born citizens. (example Calif. Governor) this should be made clear RIG NOW!!

dd McCain is a citizen.
McCain’s father and mother were american citizens.
Arnold’s parents weren’t american citizens.
McCain’s father was ordered by the u.s government to deploy.
McCain’s father was serving the U.S in the Navy.
Arnold’s father was a citizen of Austria.
McCain was born in a U.S military hospital.
Arnold was born in a foreign country and was a citizen of a foreign country.
McCain was born on u.s territory in a military hospital to american citizens.
To compare McCain to Arnold is WRONG.
They are completely different situations.
The worst part the NY Times threw out this garbage to hurt McCain with lies.

Hey John, sort of like the lies the right tells about Obama regarding his religion? Funny how we fail to point that out while trying to defend attacks against McCain. I agree with you 100% regarding there being no question to his nationality but why is it the right never defend the ridiculous attacks against dems perpetrated by their own? Most repeat it as gospel. I guess it really is just a matter of character….. or lack there of.

McCain’s outrageous temper in positively legendary around Washington.
So, regrettably, is his womanizing.
I expect many more revelations about both McCain characteristics to surface in the weeks and months ahead.

It’s OBVIOUS that McCain and Hillary’s operatives are earning their money with their planted statements. How can anyone say Obama is arrogant? He’s been taking the high road from day one, taking his ideas to the American people and NOT slinging mud at his opponents, while Hillary and McCain just assumed they’d be crowned the nominees because they think THEY DESERVE IT, even though they both showed lousy judgment that ought to preclude them from being candidates in the first place. To say Obama’s running for arrogance is a total lie, too. He’s gotten tons of death threats from thosesame blue-collar high school dropouts who love Hillary so much, probably just because she’s white. It certainly can’t be for her record (she has none) or her NAFTA stance that decimated the lifeless corpse that was American’s manufacturers. I don’t care who you vote for, but base it on the facts, NOT emotional ravings not based on fact.

One thing is for sure: The republicans have no chance in 2008 with McCain as their choice. I don’t think Americans are too keen on his 100 year grand scheme over there in Iraq, not to mention his attitude towards other nations in the vicinity. I will vote for the small government, antiwar fiscal conservative still running against McCain. Heck, Huckabee would have been better than McCain. Seems to me the republican base isn’t too smart.
Posted by: antenian | March 8, 2008, 8:38 pm 8:38 pm
so sad that this is what the Republican party comes up with. Why is it that 2/3 of the anti-war republican vote goes to a candidate who walks around singing “bomb bomb Iran” at campaign rallies?

Exactly the lack of composure the leader of America should display. If he gets that uptight during campaigning, what’s gonna happen when a world leader pisses him off? What a childish display of lack of composure.

Mark — I didn’t see any “outrageous” temper. I did see outrageous repetition of the same question.
If you ever voted for Bill Clinton or Kennedy (pick one) you can’t criticize “womanizing”.
McCain isn’t my idea of a perfect candidate, he’s just less distasteful than the other two.

I was wondering if you ever considered changing the layout of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2 images. Maybe you could space it out better?
