NAFTA SHAFTA

The AP’s Nedra Pickler obtained a Canadian government memo written after the senior economic adviser to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, met with members of the Canadian consulate — a memo that seems to back up the Canadian Television story and ABC News follow-up reports indicating that Obama’s campaign sent signals to our neighbors to the North that his anti-NAFTA rhetoric should not be taken seriously.

Obama adviser Austan Goolsbee’s comments were summed up by Canadian consulate staffer Joseph DeMora this way: "Noting anxiety among many U.S. domestic audiences about the U.S. economic outlook, Goolsbee candidly acknowledged the protectionist sentiment that has emerged, particularly in the Midwest, during the primary campaign. He cautioned that this messaging should not be taken out of context and should be viewed as more about political positioning than a clear articulation of policy plans."

Goolsbee disputed the characterization, telling the AP, "this thing about `it’s more about political positioning than a clear articulation of policy plans,’ that’s this guy’s language. He’s not quoting me….I certainly did not use that phrase in any way."

The Obama campaign over the weekend falsely claimed the CTV story had been "retracted." It has not.

And in fact, the story seems today more alive than ever. That is, if the press does its job.

If.

“This is a candidate who will do and say anything to get elected,” Mr Obama said about Hillary Clinton.
Could it be that Obama is just another politician and not the Next Messiah?

Obama publicly stated that he will NOT step out of NAFTA; the discussion is about ways to renegociate it on a set of issues.
So what is the beef of this story?

Jake, THANK YOU for having the guts to run this story and Obama’s consistent pattern of lying to the voting public. Obama simply will say ANYTHING to get elected.
Obama lied about opting out of NAFTA.
Obama lied about his 20-year relationship with Chicago slumlord Tony Rezko.
Obama lied about his muslim heritage and NEVER practicing Islam in schools in Indonesia.
Obama lied about his promise to accept public financing in the general election.
Obama lied about his support for single-payer universal healthcare coverage.
Obama lied about being a constitutional law professor at the University of Chicago Law School.
Obama lied about his support of radical extremist groups – when the truth is he attends a church that promotes black supremacy and honors people such as Louis Farrahkan.
Wake up people and PLEASE STOP this charade!

Conservatives in Canada are trying to stop Obama!
I am so sorry and ASHAMED of my GOVERNMENT!
I will do EVERYTHING I can to ensure they are NOT re-elected!
Our Government is run by LOBBYISTS, TOO!
THEY don’t WANT OBAMA!! He wants to take their power away. THAT’S the REAL STORY!
They will do and say anything.

Obama and his camp openly lied about this issue, now that the memo is out makes one wonder what else are they lying about just to ensure a win for their candidate.
It is really a shame because when this broke the MSM was ready to pin this on the Clinton side, they were so sure after speaking with the Canadians that is was another dirty trick by the Clinton camp to tarnish Obama.
Now we have people trying to blame the Canadians saying they are getting into the US elections, another side step to ignore the fact that Obama LIES!!!!

It WASN’T Obama who lied! It WAS our CANADIAN GOVERNMENT!! Check out Canada headlines….CANADIANS are FURIOUS!!

Canada is trying to STOP Obama because they want McCain. Don’t get played, America! Look deeper. TOO much depends on this.

Posted by: sue | March 3, 2008, 8:14 am 8:14 am

Hmmm really Obama did not lie well explain this report then!!
Today Bill Burton of the Obama campaign told ABC News no senior Obama campaign representative called the Canadian embassy. “The news reports on Obama’s position on NAFTA are inaccurate and in no way represent Senator Obama’s consistent position on trade,” Burton said separately in an email.

Where are Hillary’s Tax returns? What about the donor lists? What about the WH records that STILL aren’t released?? She’s a manipulative, conniving beast that will do or say anything to get elected. Wake up people. With her it’s about POWER not PEOPLE. If she gets in the White House, her whole focus will be on getting revenge for those she feels have wronged her. The American people will left out in the cold.

Stop this nonsense. It is just
more Clinton propaganda. The Obama
campaign has always made it clear
that if elected he would choose
to reopen discussions on all
out trade deals that would
assure American workers that
they get equal treatment. Didn’t
anyone watch the latest debate?
Please no more Clintons. Hillary
spent many years working for an
anti labor law firm in Arkansas
while Bill was fooling around with
his girlfriends. The fact that they won’t release their tax returns
is proof that they are concealing
how they made their $50,000,000.

Look, Obama says quite clearly in his speeches and town hall meetings that NAFTA needs to be renegotiated to increase labor and environmental standards, for the good of all members of the agreement. He does not want to “put up a moat around the US” — trade is good, it just hasn’t been good for everyone.

I think you need to drink more coffee and look over the substance of this story.
Gosh , the obama people will make anything up to make it seem he did no wrong.
People this is a problem, not a smear , not a clinton political agenda, it is Obama blowing up on stage. He tells us one thing and does something else, with a foreign country under the scope. we are being lied too, as soon as you people realize this , then maybe we can find out more about what else he has lied to us about.

All you paid, college, blogger students:
You haven’t been out in the real world. Real world doesn’t happen on the college campus, in your classrooms, or your dorms.
We live in an international world, now. Trade with other nations is essential to the US economy, specifically agriculture, which puts food in each one of your mouths.
Free trade is reality. NAFTA, GATT, and a host of other trade agreements will continue no matter who is elected President.
Revisiting is something you do at grandma’s house.
Don’t whine when your mouth is full, and welcome to reality.

THE CLINTON CAMPAIGN IS ACCUSED OF DOING THE EXACT SAME THING AND SAYING THE SAME THING TO THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT.
Why is ABC reporting this as if the Obama camp is the only one that did it? ‘If the press does its job’, it should be reporting this in all fairness, because this is NOT an Obama story. The Canadian government threw BOTH Obama and Clinton under the bus.
Clinton supporters being all self-righteous and going ‘Ha ha ha Obama lied’ need to wake up and smell the coffee. Your candidate is accused of doing the exact same thing, so you’re just making yourselves sound ridiculous.

Posted by: rachelfarleigh | March 3, 2008, 9:20 am 9:20 am

Now he’s changing his mind about troop withdrawal.
AP article from September 18, 2004, titled “Obama Willing to Support More Troops in Iraq” – excerpts follow:
***Democratic Senate candidate Barack Obama said Saturday he would be willing to send more soldiers to Iraq if it is part of a strategy that the president and military leaders believe will stabilize the country and eventually allow America to withdraw.
“If that strategy made sense and would lead ultimately to the pullout of U.S. troops but in the short term required additional troop strength to protect those who are already on the ground, then that’s something I would support,” he said.
America cannot afford to withdraw immediately, said Obama, an early opponent of invading Iraq.
That would create more chaos in Iraq and make it “an extraordinary hotbed of terrorist activity,” he said at a meeting of the Illinois News Broadcasters Association. It would also damage America’s international prestige and amount to “a slap in the face” to the troops fighting there, he said.”*******

Sen. Obama is a neophyte and has no business leading a nation with all the serious challenges we have. While there are many good things about him, his grasp of issues nationally and internationally leave much to be desired. While he creates a circus atmosphere full ofexcitement and energy he couldn’t at this point be the ring master.

Scrutiny, scrutiny, and more scrutiny is why Hillary Clinton will stay in the Democratic race until the convention in August.
Clinton campaigners believe that the beginning of prosecution by Fitzgerald at the Rezko trial (today) marks the type of scrutiny for Obama that the Clintons have already went through at the hands of Ken Starr.
All the tax dollars and time spent to dig up enough dirt to try and convict the Clintons…and nothing…
We shall see if the Obama camp is able to accomplish the same…
We shall see what we shall see…
By the way, vote Independent!

Posted by: Ken | March 3, 2008, 9:49 am 9:49 am

Issue here is Hillary is accused by Obama for NAFTA in US. Obama accused her for the job loss when there were others in the house and senate along with Bill who passed NAFTA.
So, it is understandable when experienced candidate calls Canada and letting them know that NAFTA issue is about vote(for Obama).
If Obama calls Canada and let them know NAFTA issue is a vote(for Obama) issue then it is a double standard.
This shows how an inexperience candidate reacts when the candidate says something without understanding the impact and then the candidate tries to patch it up.
Change = “Make a decision” + “Patch it up if wrong”

Posted by: LL | March 3, 2008, 9:56 am 9:56 am

I think the critical part of this story is not so much what the candidate’s positions are on NAFTA, but instead about Obama’s campaign saying one thing in public and another thing behind closed doors. Obama’s campaign is largely based on how he will transcend beyond “politics as usual” and will lead instead with hope, honesty and inspiration. Obama claims his strong suit is his ability to unite people with straight talk and exercise good judgment in spite of what is convenient within the realm of political positioning. If Obama’s platform is true, this closed door meeting between Obama’s top economic advisor Austan Goolsbee and Canadian officials is in direct contradiction with his primary campaign rhetoric. This meeting sounds like the usual political game playing that happens behind the scenes and he’s certainly not being a straight shooter to the American public. Both Obama and Clinton believe in globalization and free trade (both are far from being protectionists). They also agree that NAFTA has not been favorable to certain parts of America, particularly in places like Ohio where thousands of manufacturing jobs have been lost. The Canadian memo has no reason to embellish or misconstrue what was said in the meeting with Goolsbee. The American public and media has been so enthralled with Obama’s speeches that they are not realizing that although inspirational, Obama is still a politician and is not always doing what is “right”- he is doing what is convenient. It is worse that something like this would happen in Obama’s campaign compared to anyone’s else, because it seems that his whole campaign is based on his holier that image.

Posted by: Debbie | March 3, 2008, 10:01 am 10:01 am

Politico.com has a story today on it’s website about a goon from Obama’camp who telephoned Politico’s headquarters and demanded that their website change an article that the title read” Obama slow to get Catholic votes”…to something not so telling. And actually wanted Politico to change it’s story so it didn’t look like the catholics were soft on voting for Obama.
This Obama campaign is nothing more but lies and intimidation.
Look even the black superdelegates are being harrassed by Obama’s camp to give their support to obama.

Posted by: stevem | March 3, 2008, 10:05 am 10:05 am

When a candidate speaks of dealings with forgeign countries, that country deserves the right to investigate and report to its people the stances being spoken of, when it effects a countries deals and economy! What part of that is interfering?
Obama’s camp said no meeting EVER took place – Not True now!
Obama’s camp now saids a low level ConGen wrote it – the low level ConGen is there to do just that, record the meeting between the ConGen Ambassador and anyone who visits the ConGen Ambassador, just as a sectretary does with Presidents of companies!
The article on AP says Goolsbee wasn’t there representing the Obama campaign, but was there representing the U of Chicago, then why did Goolsbee answer questions put forward about Obama’s position?
obama’s campaign attempted to distroy a highly respected reporter and news media that broke the story, now is it going to go after the Canadian Government and attempt to destroy it for reporting rightly so to its people about what is fact and not fiction being toted about that can affect them and their economy?
Obama proved something to the American people, “words are not just words when held accountable” but only Obama’s words to the American people are just words!

I can’t believe this is happening again, and the American people just seem so Blase about the way obama operates in the world. We already elected a President that had no real credentials and had no Foreign policy experience. But shucks, he was likable. This is not a popularity contest in High School competing for the popular lunch table!! He has so many unanswered controversies swirling around him. I keep seeing the American people just blindly walking towards the sun & the promise of hope with no real solutions or answers. He is lucky Senator Clinton got all the first questions in the debates as that left him the ability to say I agree with Senator Clinton umpteen times & not have to formulate an opinion or idea of his own. WAKE UP people we stared blindly into the sun before. REMEMBER, we are trying to find someone to get us away from that fire!!!

Posted by: Brenda P. | March 3, 2008, 10:22 am 10:22 am

First point to make. Canada might be a lot more interested than the US in dropping Nafta, given a) US just ignores it when any costs to US, see softwood lumber dispute and b) the controls it imposes on Cdn. oil and gas production, eg. Canada required to share all production proportional to population with US regardless of conditions in Canada.
And that turkey above discussing “Canada’s weak labour standards etc.” needs to get out a bit. What’s the matter, can’t handle a foreign language?
As a Canadian, I’ll be pleased to see NAFTA turfed, and I think most Cdn’s agree.

Posted by: nutherguy | March 3, 2008, 10:22 am 10:22 am

This does not surprise me one bit. Obama’s words are rarely consistent with his actions. He sells himself as a post partisan uniter, but his record is the most liberal in the Senate. He says the war in Iraq has distracted us from addressing Al Queda in Afghanistan, but has failed to hold a single substantive hearing as Chairman of the Senate Committee with oversight over NATO’s effort in Afghanistan. During the last debate, he justified his inaction against Al Queda by explaining that he has been busy running for president.
His priorities align with his ambition, and nothing else. He is a master at the art of “political positioning”—missing key votes, failing to be there when the going gets tough and then pointing the finger at others. He is an opportunist and a coward.

I forgot to say that I am very proud of Jake Tapper, he always does a fair & professional job reporting. Kudos Jake. This is something that has been missing in the American media of late. I have also noticed another person who tries to be fair and give the whole story & that is Dan Abrams of all the places MSNBC. (I swear they have obama kool-aid in their water cooler!!) But he tries to be honest as well, and when disparaging things about the Clinton’s are said he will call them on it. I can’t imagine David Schuster saying the obama’s were pimping out their daughter for votes and there not be a huge scandel. But he said it about Chelsea, & then went on Morning Joe & said it AGAIN!!! Then members of MSNBC (Tucker Carlson) had the audacity to say that he “HATES” the Clintons “their mean to him” because the media gets yelled at by them. Well I applaud President Clinton for calling them on it and having the guts to stick up for his daughter. This was cruel, outside the ethics of reporting and SEXIST!! That is why we need more reporters like Jake Tapper and Dan Abrams. Thanks for not drinking the obama kool-aid and reporting on BOTH candidates honestly. I have quit watching MSNBC because of their SEXIST & BIASED reporting and so are ALOT of WOMEN. There is a petition being signed and sent to MSNBC about this very suject. When I saw it I was more than happy to sign it. This was a little aside I thought should be “reported” on. Good job ABC!!!

Great work Jack Tapper! I really like the fact that you have continued following this story and you are probably the first REAL journalist that have done investigative research and followed up with a story. Usually they throw a headline and then it disappears. So again thanks for keeping us informed!

Posted by: Thanks Jack Tapper | March 3, 2008, 11:00 am 11:00 am

So let me get this straight:
Some guy from Canada wrote that some guy from the Obama campaign said something that the guy from the Obama campaign said he didn’t say, and that proves that the Obama campaign is lying? And the reason we know about this is because “somebody” leaked it?
And that is therefore good journalism?
I have never been more entertained in all my life than I have been by this campaign. Seriously.
Obama ’08
P.S. Desperation brings out the worst in candidates and the media apparently . . .

Posted by: Nobodys fool | March 3, 2008, 11:01 am 11:01 am

Gee, I think Obama’s halo is slipping. Here’s what’s fearful about all this. He’s set himself up as something virtually pure and unaffected by the ways of Washington. He stated that one of the reasons he ran instead of waiting four to eight years is that he wouldn’t stay the same person that he is now. That suggests that somehow he would become tainted by the process, a telling implicit admission in and of itself. But, based on his outright false comments regarding his lack of contact with the Canadians over his NAFTA position, he didn’t have to wait even eight months for the taint to attach.
The bottom line is that based on this and other issues, Barak is no longer part of “We are the change we need.”

Posted by: Geoff in RI | March 3, 2008, 11:05 am 11:05 am

I read the original story in The Toronto Star andit also mentioned that the CLINTON campaign was in contact with the Canadians. how convenient that THAT is not being discussed by the media..HOW COME????

It’s about time the story went national! Obama is finally found out! People, spread this story everywhere. Tomorrow is an important day in this campaign and voters in Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island and Vermont need to know what a scoundrel he is!

Posted by: rhopat | March 3, 2008, 11:10 am 11:10 am

To Nobody’s Fool.
The link to the AP story on which the story is based states that the AP reporter has the actual memo. Not hearsay, not innuendo. Fact. A document. The Obama folks can spin this any way they want, but the facts are that a senior Obama campaign adviser met with Canadian officials, and in response to a NAFTA question, told the Canadians that the campaign rhetoric is not truly representative of Obama’s position on NAFTA.
The problem isn’t that Obama’s guy met with the Canadians. The problem is, contrary to his self-righteous presence on the stump, he apparently says one thing in public and has his aides saying another in private. The second problem is that he denies his advisers comments contrary to a memo circulated throughout the Canadian government.

Posted by: Geoff in RI | March 3, 2008, 11:28 am 11:28 am

I believe we can all agree the best way to keep NAFTA in place is to discredit Obama. So a day before election “revelation” should be no surprise.
Rather than blindly believe what somebody who likes NAFTA says somebody from the Obama campaign said. I am going to believe the Canadian Embassy.
On Thursday, the Canadian embassy in Washington issued a complete denial.
“At no time has any member of a presidential campaign called the Canadian ambassador or any official at the embassy to discuss NAFTA,” it said in a statement.

Posted by: Mr. Unite Us | March 3, 2008, 11:30 am 11:30 am

It seems some of the folks commenting and dismissing the story are missing a few substantial facts:
First of all, The Obama campaign denied ANY conversations — yet we now have Goolsbee telling AP “that’s the guys own words, he’s not quoting me”
Umm… so now that implies a conversation DID take place only the words are different than what was “leaked”?
Which one is it? Did or didn’t a conversation take place?
It appears, by Goolsbee’s own comments that it did. If the Obama camp lied and said no, it didn’t, they still lied to the public and the context of the conversation matter less than the denial. If it did take place, and the words are accurate (or very close), it’s the same thing: dishonesty and rhetoric from the “Promiser of Change”.
If it comes out that yes, a conversation did take place but Goolsbee acted on his own without Senator Obama’s knowledge, then we need to question Mr. Obama’s judgment because he hired Goolsbee.
At this point, no matter how it’s spun, it reveals some disturbing reality about the Obama campaign. The real question will be: how many will read it and think about it?
Too many people seem as brainwashed this campaign season as when Bush was re-elected. Wake up America! Politicians are politicians! Hope, honesty, change… it’s BS and always will be. Of all of the candidates this time around, Senator Obama has seen a virtual free pass from the press who have not followed up on or reported on many interesting situations he’s been involved in (meanwhile we get all of McCains and Clinton’s – usually mentioned by Obama himself!).
And before someone ignorantly posts to argue against my independent-voter point, there are a number of mainstream reporters inaccurately saying “Obama voted against the war”. HE DID?!? He wasn’t a US Senator until two years AFTER that vote happened. He didn’t vote at all! In fact, he was quoted as saying he really doesn’t know how he would’ve voted if he had been a Senator.
For those interested, not in changing their opinion about voting for or against him but just to cast a rare educated vote, do some searching. Barack Obama has a fair history of “flip-flopping” on topics depending on who he’s talking to.
Change = New Wrapper around the same old politician.
If we really want change in this country we *must* bring it about ourselves — starting with investigating our options and realizing that words are meaningless during a campaign. All of us must research the facts before we make choices… if course it’s pretty difficult to know where the real facts are.

Thank you so much for keeping this story alive. American voters have a right to know the truth about their candidates.
And, despite what some are saying – this story is far from over. Whether or not Goolsbee discussed NAFTA, the campaign still lied. Obama lied when he said there was no meeting. Why lie unless you have something to fear?!?!

The memo is a summary written by the Canadian offical summarizing HIS RECOLLECTION of the conversation. That is not equivalent to a memo from the Obama campaign stating a position.
Your confusion is understandable considering the inflammatory way this has all be “reported”.

Mr. Unite Us,
Just to clarify something you posted. This story didn’t come out today – the day before the election.
The story, which apparently happened back in January, was aired by CTV the day after the Ohio debate which makes sense as it’s the first time either Candidate directly commented on NAFTA.
After airing, it was quickly denied by the Obama camp forcing CTV to reveal the names of the (allegedly) involved parties to support the story which is likely why more news organizations are now following up on it (more leads).

Obama is a product of the corrupt Chicago Machine. Its interesting how Obama in his debates said I was part of the ethics reform committee to look at shady senators and lobbyists, then he said I don’t believe in deals being made behind doors. I want all deals on the table infront of the American people.
This is just another shady deal by a shady chicago politician. Hillary had her Whitewater scandal Obama is getting the Rezko scandal. There are more and more things I am learning about Obama that really makes me question if he was just a made up figure the media helped rise up in popularity. This guy is full of contradictions and false claims/statements.
This man is a product of Chicago which is notorious for being corrupt and doing business with sleazy characters. Its interesting how the MSM and Drudge are still trying to push hillary out and protecting Obama and the public from all of these scandals. I just hope he is ready for the “527 republican machine” they will not leave a stone unturned and this NAFTA/SHAFTA thing plus Rezko/Farrakhan will all be tied into national ad campaign. I just say good luck Obama trying to win all the RED states you won. You need to pray to GOD if you get the nomination that you will actually earn a single vote from the Hillary campaign. The Hispanics/ the Hillary voters will never endorse him. Good Luck Barack H. Obama you’r Halo is fading and this Yes we Can speeches are about to be retired…You have ties to some of the most radical people in the US and nobody is going to just ignore that.

People will believe what they want to believe and memories tend to laps, as last week when this broke, everyone was believing the Obama camp statements that:
“No one from the Obama campaign ever met with any Canadian Government person”
Even when Goolsbee’s name was revealed, the Obama campaign stood fast on stating the same, that no one ever met with any Canadian official!
No that the past lies are exposed, all we get are more lies and twists, and expected to believe them?
Face facts, this isn’t a forgeign countries attempts to sway voters, it is a forgeign countries telling its population the truth, something that seems to be void of in America!
Obama and his campaign should just come out and instead of twisting and turning rhetoric again, admit the truth, why is it that everything on Obama has to be like pulling teeth?
From Rezko admissions to discrediting a foreign government and reputable media outlet, instead of simply saying, “we made a bonehead mistake” once again!
But that cannot be said when proclaiming “I have the better judgement to run this country” based on a stump speech claimed to be made when running for the Senate, opps he wasn’t running for the Senate when he made that speech, he ran for the Senate 2 years after that speech!
Oh yea it was because he has judgement like Sen Rockafeller from WV does as Chair of the Intelligence oversight commitee who voted against the Iraq war! Opps again, Sen Rockafeller wasn’t ochair of the Senate Oversight Commitee in 2002, and he actually voted for the war!
Words are listened to and checked out, but what the heck, bamboozling is the word of the day isn’t it!

Is it when nothing intelligent to say on the facts of a story, bamboozling is the order of the day?

Obama’s ship is sailing against the wind and the water density is like TAR. I hope that makes sense. The media has given Obama a smooth sail faaar away from scandals. But when the GOP attack machine comes out and enlighten the voters on national ad campaigns about NAFTA/REZKO scandals his ship and the water will feel like tar and against the wind. It easy to ignore scandals when the CNN,FOX,MSNBC just ignore all his faults. Somewhere in the RNC HQ, they are salivating after Obama, and the election will go to mccain.
Thanks Jack for atleast keeping this alive and scrutinizing all candidates no matter what.

here is the beef ,i will spell it out.1]when the story first broke the obama campaign said the meeting never happened and the people on the net said it was a made up clinton smear.2]then when the meeting was confirmed by the canadian gov. the campaign said that nafta was not discussed.3]now that the memo is out the campaign says his words were misunderstood.4]now the spokesman says that this person was not a major part ofthe campaign when he is obamas cheif economic advisor.so for a candidate who talks about his judgement and his new politics its the me old chicago game lie,lie and lie somemore.

Posted by: don tufts | March 3, 2008, 12:11 pm 12:11 pm

So much misinformation, so little time . . .
When Senator Obama said “it never happened” he was referring to the fact that no one from his campaign told Canadian officials anything about NAFTA that contradicted the positions he shared at the Ohio debate. That is not the same as sayng “there was no conversation”.
Now the real question is – why is this news?
Who benefits from this “story” being reported?
Even if everything in the “summary” by the Canadian official were true, what does it prove?
Why is the “narrative” about Senator Obama getting soft news coverage being peddled when he has dealt with one smear after another from “day 1″ of this campaign? (Slush fund, drug dealer, muslim, unpatriotic, ambitious kindegartner, plagiarism, race card, cult leader, and I could go on and on.)
This campaign will be won or loss on it’s merits, and Senator Obama has run a better campaign and is a better candidate than Senator Clinton.
Period.

alison Your savior Obama brought up NAFTA as an attack against Clinton, opps that is politics of old according to Obama, but he did it anyhow! In doing so, he said he’d renegoticate NAFTA, which Canadians want done simply because of all the oil and natural gas they are locked into in by NAFTA to supply the US when Canada can make far more money sending it to China due to export duties!
Bill Clinton was in Toronto saturday night for a fundraiser for African Aides benefit charity long set up with Elton John and Sharkira amongst others!
Geez, why do people for Obama attempt at distorting the truth?
About time some people educated themselves instead of listening to words that are just words!
The count of Obama falsehoods this past week sits at 12 and rising, but he will change it all when his is elected President, yeah right! Just as he has a wonderful record on fighting terrorism sitting on the Senate Oversight Commitee covering NATO…opps, he is Chair of that commitee and hasn’t heald a single hearing on it, but that is ok, looks good on Obama’s resume!
BAMBOOZLED Obama style!

Nobodys fool- you miss the debates, she said her taxes were in the process and it isn’t as easy and here you go, there are things that they have to go through to be released!
Strange, you will throw up inuendos to protect Obama, yet when he is caught red handed in lies, you change the subject, even when he lies saying “I did not vote for the war in Iraq” you believe him, when the truth is he wasn’t a US Senator when the vote took place, and when confronted on it, he states “I was in a tough fight for the Senate” and it was a pivital issue facing the voters when he spoke out on it! Fact is, he didn’t even start running for the Senate for a year after the vote happened in 2002 he made a speech to an anti-war rally of 350 people in Chicago and that is the end of his rhetoric against the war! Everything since has been “I don’t know how I would have voted if I was a US Senator at the time of the vote”!
Facts are facts and this issue is Obama BAMBOOZLING for votes and not telling the truth, caught and spin everything else than the truth once again!

Dear Clear Choice,
There is no need for me to “protect” Senator Obama. However, there is a GREAT NEED to refute the misinformation that floats around the internet as fact.
Senator Clinton hasn’t released her 2006 Tax returns which are already complete and available. Nice try with the old “bait and switch” technique in referencing the 2007 taxes. What “things” would she have to go through to release her 2006 taxes? She has no trouble at all releasing Senator Obama’s kindergarten records and photos, so what’s the hold up?
And in terms of Senator Obama and the Iraq war, you can say what you want, but the fact is – Senator Obama was AGAINST the war and Senator Clinton was FOR the war.
Whether or not Senator Obama was in the U.S. Senate, Illinois legislature, or in the backyard at his cousin’s house, it is a documented fac that he opposed the war. And he was right. Nothing you can say is gonna change it.
We do agree on one thing however . . . America has a clear choice . . . here’s hoping they make the right call.
Obama ’08

Nobody’s fool seems you don’t listen, she has agreed to have them released, she said so January 31 and the process is underway, so no bait and switch like you are doing on a blog about Obama lies about NAFTA!
Obama on Iraq stated nationally in 2004 “if I was a US Senator at the time of the vote I do not know how I would have voted as being privy to National Security issues and Whitehouse conversations” That is the truth of the matter, convinience is to talk of a stump speech and nothing there after! Even his support of Bush in 2005 regarding the war!
So the clear choice isn’t someone who waffles on a subject to gain support, that is old school politics….opps Obama is for change, forgot after rising in politics on dirty money he is the new champion of change…tsk tsk!

Posted by: Clear Choice | March 3, 2008, 1:42 pm 1:42 pm

Yes, Yes, Yes we can!! Select a candidate of substance. Hillary 2008
This and the Rezko deal are at least 2 reasons Dems have to slow down and make sure Obama is vetted before we run him against McCain or a possible surprise Huckabee.
The Republicans will chew Obama up and spit him out as soon as the press gets bored with the same old same old speeches.
Obama’s latest misleading statement regarding Hillary’s Iraq vote which he did NOT have to make is that Hillary did not give them time for diplomacy. Hillary did not give them time? What kind of idiots believe that the length of diplomacy was up to Hillary? Bush is the president and he is the person that did not give diplomacy nor the people looking for WMD’s time.
Obama’s supporters Ted Kennedy and John Kerry both saw the same intelligence Hillary did and they voted the same as her. Does Obama think they are old and incompetant as well?

As a Canadian for those of you who believe it’s just our Conservative govt trying to interfere in your campaign it was actually the NDP (our left of centre 3rd party, I’m a member) who raised it in the house of commons.
For Canadians who are furious at Harper right now, it’s more likely for signiong bad trade deals with the US liek Softwood Lumber, or not pulling out of Afghanistan. As for NAFTA we’re happy to renegotiate.

I’m glad you brought up that Iraq quote for Senator Obama, because as usual, you left the most important part out:
“What would I have done? I don’t know. What I know is that from my vantage point the case was not made.”
You can read a complete Fact Check debunking this much touted Clinton campaign inaccuracy here:
P.S. Did you say something about waffling? Isn’t Senator Clinton the one who is for/against Driver’s licenses for undocumented workers, for/against NAFTA, for/against seating the Florida and Michigan delegates, for/against lobbyists (cause they are people too), for/against negative campaigning . . .

Posted by: Nobody's fool | March 3, 2008, 2:19 pm 2:19 pm

Remember when Dems were up in arms against Republicans like Senator Larry Craig? Not so much because he got caught making a pass a another man, but because they claimed to be the party of “family values”. Well Obama has based his entire campaign on being the candidate of “change” and the candidate of the “future”. Instead what do we find out when news about him actually gets reported? Not only does he have no substance, but his rhetoric is nothing more than OLD politics.
Hillary 2008 we need a nominee that has been vetter for 16 years and has substance to boot.

First of all Ted Kennedy DID NOT vote to authorize the Iraq war.
Second of all Senator Clinton could give time for diplomacy by not voting for the war.
Lastly Senator Clinton has WAY MORE BAGGAGE in the scandal department. So let’s not go there, okay?
P.S. John Kerry knows how to admit a mistake and Senator Clinton doesn’t, just like George W. Bush.

I’m not sure why those latching onto this story assume that Barack Obama is “lying.” Is it not equally possible, or even probable, that the author of the memo in question is himself lying, exaggerating, or simply inaccurately reporting the conversation between Austan Goolsbee and the Canadian consulate official in Chicago?

Posted by: Brad Wesley | March 3, 2008, 2:31 pm 2:31 pm

Posted by: Ken | March 3, 2008, 2:37 pm 2:37 pm

The original CTV story, the one that the Obama campaign denied, may not have been “retracted” but it was certainly “abandoned”. THAT story was that a high level staff member had telephoned Candian Ambassador Wilson to warn him that Obama’s statements about NAFTA would be “campaign rhetoric.” — Someone leaked that story to CTV and it certainly wasn’t Obama. ————- Also, Jake’s story omits this statement from the memo: “”On NAFTA, Goolsbee suggested that Obama is less about fundamentally changing the agreement and more in favour of strengthening/clarifying language on labour mobility and environment and trying to establish these as more `core’ principles of the agreement.” This is quite consisted with what Obama said publicly in the debate. —– If the press is going to “do its job,” it should find out who leaked that false story. THAT’s the story here and it IS the same old politics … but it was done by someone other than Obama.

Posted by: Elizabeth | March 3, 2008, 2:37 pm 2:37 pm

Obama ads running in Ohio right now are attacking Clinton for supporting NAFTA. The ads promise Obama has never supported NAFTA and that he will end it. Sounds like Mr. Obama is a bit confused on the issues—which seems to be a recurring trend.
I applaud you, Mr. Tapper, for refusing to join the media circus that is entirely too fixated on Barak Obama. It’s refreshing to know that there is at least one member of the media who isn’t ready and willing to show his bias.

March 3, 2008 Part of the memo
In his closing section of the memo, DeMora said when Rioux “asked whether we could expect to hear more of this as the elections progressed, Goolsbee thought not. In fact, he mentioned that going forward the Obama camp was going to be careful to send the appropriate message without coming off too protectionist.
“As Obama continues to court the economic populist vote, particularly in upcoming contests like Ohio, we are likely to see a continuation of some of the messaging that hasn’t played in Canada’s favour but this should continue to be viewed in the context in which it is delivered.”
It appears as if once the Obama campaign believes that once it gets out of Ohio and can stop “courting” the economic populist vote they will be able to tone down their rhetoric. Does this statement mean Obama believes Ohioians are suckers or chumps that can be played like fools with a few sweet sounding words?

Saddam Hussein was given TWELVE YEARS to fess up as to whether he still had WMDs or not. How much more time should we have given him? Also, if you recall (or have selectively chosen to forget), several of the leading Democrats said back in 1998 (when Congress gave President Clinton the authorization for regime change in Iraq) that Saddam Hussein would have nuclear weapons in five years. Let see…1998 plus 5 years…that would put it at 2003. If the Democrats HAD NOT LIED back in 1998, maybe we could have given Saddam Hussein a few more years. But we didn’t know that THEY LIED until we actually went into Iraq. Only then did we know that Saddam Hussein mislead his neighbors and the rest of the world. But what if he had nuclear weapons in 2003 and we hadn’t invaded Iraq. The only way we would have known was when they were used. And then you guys would have been all over President Bush for not done more to rid Iraq of its WMDs.

I made a boneheaded mistake when I said Kennedy voted for it.
However, as far as Hillary’s baggage goes, Republicans were after her for 16 long years. Ken Starr spent millions of taxpayer dollars trying to get her.
Do you think that maybe over the years Republicans were at least able to get some of their swift boating slanderous rhetoric stick to her whether or not she deserved it? None of this changes the fact that when Senator Clinton was co-president the first time, she was for NAFTA. And now she conveniently says she was always against it. THAT is the story of NAFTA . . . everything else is just carefully orchestrated smoke and mirrors.

David Axelrod ran the Deval Patrick campaign in Massachusetts that got Patrick elected. They used a very similar slogan: Yes, We Will! instead of Yes, We Can!
Axelrod is running the Obama campaign as well. Massachusetts Dems voted for Clinton over Obama in the primary because they had already seen the hot air campaign from Deval Patrick and that when he got in office he didn’t do much differently from any other politician. Obama is not Jesus. He’s just another slick salesman.

Thanks for the insight Jeff.
This just in . . .
Hillary Clinton is not Mother Teresa either.

The more we discover the incompetence and lack of MATURITY from the Obama camp, the more people are questioning how this guys became the front runner for the democrats.
I blame the media and all the hype they buzzed around him w/out showing all of us what type of candidate this man was.
Rezko, NAFTA, Farrakhan, Wright, Odinga, Soros, all have in common, they are RADICAL THINKERS in their BELIEFS
If I am to believe Obama is a UNITER, then where are his CENTRIST friends, and RITHG wing FRIENDS to show us he has CAPABILITIES to TIE and UNITE this NATION together. All I have seen so far are serious radical people who have INFLUENCED OBAMA’s foggy thinking.
Obama is a hoax and thinking he will bring healing to our nation is laughable. I would like to see how…

Obama reminds me of Walt Whitman,
“Whitman called ”Leaves of Grass” ”the new Bible.” He had a messianic view of himself as poetic Answerer come to heal American society. By absorbing and magnifying his culture’s best aspects, he believed his poetry could help unify a nation fractured by class conflicts, shady politics, and racial tensions. The poet, he wrote in his preface, ”is the equalizer of his age and land. . . he supplies what wants supplying and checks what wants checking.” He offered a recipe for healing: ”This is what you shall do . . . read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life.”

This quote summarizes the very shady characters Obama has been affiliated with.
“Be as careful of the books you read, as of the company you keep; for your habits and character will be as much influenced by the former as by the latter.”

I posted this comment and question earlier and have not yet seen a non-frivolous response:
“I’m not sure why those latching onto this story assume that Barack Obama is ‘lying.’ Is it not equally possible, or even probable, that the author of the memo in question is himself lying, exaggerating, or simply inaccurately reporting the conversation between Austan Goolsbee and the Canadian consulate official in Chicago?”
Now, don’t get me wrong: I’ve seen enough of this blog to realize that it’s a right-wing blog masquerading as objective commentary on a “mainstream media” website. But for just a moment, take a step back from the talking points most of you parrot and seriously consider the question I have posed.
I’d wager that, at this point, this “story” carries no more water than even the NYT’s McCain-Iseman story.

Finally, someone in media is trying to get to the bottom of this story.
BTW, It was not just “someone” from Obama’s campaign, it was his Chief Economic Advisor, senior Obama campaign official, Austan Goolsbee, who met the Canadian consul-general in Chicago, Georges Rioux on Feb 8th. Goolsbee acknowledged telling the Canadian that Obama’s position on NAFTA “is less about fundamentally changing the agreement”

I am getting plenty sick and tired of Obama one speech. His greatest line is he did not support the war. Oh well, that is in the past and can’t be changed. What is he going to do in the future? That is the question. Obama get out.
GO HILLARY you are the WOMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: LJH | March 3, 2008, 5:51 pm 5:51 pm

Obama was proud to say how many great intelligent people were behind his campaign. He is ready to be the president etc.
Today CNN asked obama about this story and he said “Austan Goolsbee acted on his own, I was not aware of this”
So basically Obama is blaming his Chief Economic Advisor for acting on his own….Just displays the incompetent nature of the Obama campaign. If we do well ALL PRAISES TO OBAMA, but if we have a scandal in our hand: RAT OUT THE PERSON AND DEFLECT IT ON MY ADVISORS NEVER ON OBAMA!.
Going from being hailed as Messiah to being referred to as a used car sales man, shows how it goes when the MSM starts to turn on their golden boy. Its not going to get any easier for Obama the future “president of USA” keep blaming all your advisor’s for your inability to handle NAFTA and for all your extremist friends FARRAKHAN and REZKO.
Of course Obama had nothing to do with anything, he is just a message of HOPE, UNITY and YES WE CAN. Obama takes no responsibility for any wrong doings and shady deals. Remember only praises to Obama.

Barack is gone.
Go Hillary!

Trust Obama?????????????????
Vote Hillary!

After reading all of these responses, I’m now convinced all of you Obamabots have drank the koolaid b/c you sound like mindless idiots.
I was considering voting for Obama, although I found the “yes we can” slogans disconcerting & fainting women at his rallies creepy. I went to his rally in Houston but I did not hear anything of substance come out of his mouth. I felt like I was at a pop concert with screaming dreamy eyed adolescents.
Then came the smears against Senator Clinton, the race baiting, the many close ties he has to extremists, the fiction in his autobiography, his shady dealings with Rezko & now, he’ caught red handed in a blatant lie.
As others have pointed out, what makes this SO significant is the fact that he is touting himself as the new kind of politician; he promises a change to the status qou blah blah blah. But in reality, he’s just another smooth talking politician who will say anything he thinks people want to hear.
Personally, I think he’s dangerous. He has caused strife & division within the Democratic party, yet claims he will unify the country? HA HA HA
He has arrogantly proclaimed that his supporters won’t vote for Hilary, but thinks that hers wil vote for him in the general election. I have voted Democrat since Bill Clinton’s first term.
Tomorrow I’m going to vote for Hilary. If he ends up with the nomination, I will have to follow my conscience and vote for Mccain in November. Much to his (and the rest of the Democratic party’s), dismay, I think most Hilary supporters will do the same.
Stay tuned b/c he’ll be swiftboated by the GOP before the first debate. They will expose everything that most of the media is ignoring.

Obama has been running on judgement. What kind of judgement allows a guy to hang out with Rezko? What kind of judgement allows a guy to be friendly with anti-American Bill Ayers. I fear there is more corruption behind the scenes than we have ever seen.
On top of that, if we can’t trust Obama on NAFTA and he fails to tell the truth, what else is he hiding?

Posted by: Speedy | March 3, 2008, 7:51 pm 7:51 pm

GoHillary: I don’t know a single Obama supporter who won’t go for McCain. Let’s give it to the American press corps: in the Bush/Gore election years they reported on trivia and chased after scandals, so they could claim to be first on the story. In this primary season, we’ve seen nothing but the same. Another 100 years in Iraq? No problem. A human rights record slightly below Syria’s? No problem. A deficit built up in 8 years that our grandchildren will be paying off, instead of going to college? No problem. People dying the wealthiest nation in the world because they can’t get health care? No problem. A memo already discredited by the Canadian government, now that’s BIG news.

Here are a few points for Americans to ponder from an interested Canadian:
1. The day before the New Hampshire primary, CNN ran Hillary’s cry-baby routine repeatedly to the exclusion of everything else on the campaign. Barack was barely on the CNN radar. That Hillary won against the odds was not surprising.
2. Why is Barack’s connection to Tony Rezco such a big deal and does CNN keep so shamelessly harping on the falsehood that Rezco is a fund-raiser for Barack when Barack has disavowed Rezco and has delivered all of Rezco’s contributions to charity? Why are McCain’s connections to lobbysts and McCain’s and the Clintons’ connections to Savings and Loans fiasco of the mid nineties swept under the rug? Why did CNN and other news media allow the news item on McCain in the New York Times die off so quickly and avoid any further reference to it? Are these matters not relevant anymore to the candidacies of McCain and Hillary?
3. Being a Canadian, I wouldn’t exactly vouch for what a Canadian official said about Barack’s ambiguous position on Nafta. As Donovan Bailey, the Canadian Olympic Gold medalist, said while training for the Olympics in Atlanta, Canada doesn’t exactly measure up to the US as far as providing equal opportunities for the minorities. I am living proof of that. So, what a Canadian official says about Obama camp waffling on the Nafta issue can be attributed to a bigoted, vested interest, and should be taken with a bucket of salt.
4. In Hillary’s purported 35 years of experience, she must be counting her entire professional life. That kind of yardstick would qualify many to be the President of the USA, especially when the most significant years of those 35 years, the 8 years in the White House, she had no clue what was going on under her own nose.
5. Why has CNN and other media caved in to complaints from Hillary and her cohorts that she is not getting equal coverage in the news media and now run Hillary’s stuff 60% of the time. I am an independent observer from another country. I should know the difference.
6. Why are personal attacks on Barack from Hillary’s camp, some Republicans and many journalists, such as distributing a picture of Barack in Somali garb (it is a Somali garb, for goodness sake, and not a Muslim garb per se), having to disavow Farakhan for something that Farakhan said (what happened to democracy and the free-speech rights of Farakhan enshrined in the US constitution, for crying out loud), and having to defend Michelle Obama’s statement that she’s never been more proud of America as she is now (a sentiment held by many, many interested people around the world after the abyss that the current administration has led the US to) are fair game when any personal attacks on Hillary or McCain are taboo?
7. I have known many nice people from the USA, more than nationals of any other country that I know of. The normal American that I know is a kindly, genial person. I’d like to think that he/she has also enough intelligence not to be blindsided by gutter politics. America, this is your time. Pick up that sceptre that your forbears so painstakingly earned and that your current leaders have so disdainfully discarded. Let your mettle show once again to the rest of the world. Allow the world to look up to you again with awe and respect.
8. To me, it is clear that there is a concerted effort by the same old, same old Washington-types and their cohorts (that includes CNN, in spades) to discredit the only phenomenon in more than two generations to grace our landscape, offering hope for the entire human kind. As Christ said, a prophet is not without honour except in his own land, among his own people.

Obama says he’s going to bring people both sides together but where is the evidence of that in his past behavior?
What stands out in his brief Senate career is his 100% “most liberal” voting record, not a history of fighting across party lines to get legislation passed as he implies in speech after speech. He wasn’t part of the 2005 “Gang of 14″ bipartisan coalition that sought to break the logjam on judicial nominations, though the other freshman Illinois senator and John McCain (who led them) both were. He did support the bipartisan effort to get an immigration bill last year, winning a minor plaudit from McCain, but that wasn’t something the ‘other side’ supported at all, and unlike uber partisan, divisive Sen. Edward Kennedy, he didn’t work closely with the White House.
Where’s the beef? Where’s the proof that Obama will finally begin to DO what McCain has been doing for 25 years? John McCain and Russ Feingold used to joke that they were the only ones who ate alone in the senate cafateria. I doubt Barak Obama has ever been anywhere but at the middle of the pack.

The Canadian government refutes the Clinton allegations.
“In the recent report produced by the Consulate General in Chicago, there was no intention to convey, in any way, that Senator Obama and his campaign team were taking a different position in public from views expressed in private, including about NAFTA,” the statement said. “We deeply regret any inference that may have been drawn to that effect.”

Posted by: Mara | March 3, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

Why has CTV disrupted the link to the FIRST page of their original story?
On that page there was one small paragraph stating that the Clinton campaign had ALSO contacted the Canadian Embassy.
Since most legitimate news organizations are well aware that the present Canadian Government wants Hillary to win the Nomination, it does seem a bit odd that that paragraph didn’t catch the eye of even one Reporter.
Well, it probably did. She just scared everyone off with her, “The media is being unfair. They have no right to tell the American Public the truth about me.”

Ever worked in government? One good piece of advice I got from an old hand was “volunteer to take the minutes”. No-one wants that grunt work, but at the end of the meeting the minute taker gets to ‘paraphrase’ the discussion and conclusions reached, and to record them for posterity. Remember this when you use the minutes of a meeting (or a memo serving that purpose) to try to establish just who said what, and what the context was, and what it all _means_.
