Pelosi Meets with Dalai Llama, Offers Support

ABC New’s Nick Schifrin reports from Dharamsala: US Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi made one of the highest-ranking  U.S. official visits ever to Dharamsala, India, the exile home of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Llama, today.

While standing next to the Dalai Llama, she denounced "China’s oppression of people in Tibet."

Watch the VIDEO HERE.

"If freedom loving people don’t speak out against China’s oppression of people in Tibet, we have lost all moral authority to speak out against any oppressed people."

This visit by 10 members of Congress to the Dalai Lama’s home in exile was planned long before the current protests in Tibet began.

But Pelosi said, "Little did we know, we would be coming at such a sad time. Perhaps it was our karma, perhaps it was our fate … it was our karma because we are here to help the people of Tibet."

Pelosi and the rest of the congressional delegation were welcomed by the equivalent of a state visit, including 2,000 monks and other supporters waving Tibetan and U.S. flags. Pelosi and the rest of the congressional delegation were having lunch Friday with the Dalai Lama and will later hold pose for photographs, and perhaps take questions from the press.

What did the Dalai Lama do to deserve this… doesn’t he have enough problems than to entertain Democrats trying to shore up their international creds!
I think it’s my karma to puke.
Perhaps in the cosmic cycle of birth, death and reincarnation, Peliosi will in the next life come back as a jelly-fish, floating in the sea. Drifting along until she comes upon and stings her ancient foe a barracuda… the reincarnation of Hillary.
All kidding aside… everyone please write to Bush and ask him to reconsider his trip to China unless there is real negotiation with Tibet. We have cut them enough slack… we have used the power of capitalism to loosen their economy… now we have to show them our moral conviction. The athletes may go, but Bush and tourists should be discouraged.

Nancy Pelosi might want to show a little of her leadership within her own crumbling party and quit playing to the Hollywood supporters of the Dali Lama. While what is tranpiring in China is horrific, she is such a grandstander that if she wore platform shoes, she’d get a nosebleed.

The Dalai Llama? Did she pet his nice furry pelt?
I agree with Beebop. That’s really a Dali-esque mental picture!

PELOSI is so stupid , she knows nothing about China and Tibet, and I think she has no right to comment on China and Tibet, human rights in Tibet is good and better than the time Dalai Lama was there, and in China ethnical Tibetans have more rights than ethnical Han Chinese, the violence , lootings and killings in Tibet thesedays were orgnized by some radical Tibetans, Pelosi should shut up and go back to learn some history and chinese today’s social cultures, and then come back to comment !!!

President Nancy Pelosi said she and the ten congressmen will support the Dalai Llama. What can she do? What is the U.S. position on this? Does she know all the facts or acting like a grandmother? “That alright baby I’ll help you against those bad people.” I wonder if she put on one of those Dalai Llama outfits for a photo shot? Thank you President Pelosi!!

While I find it mighty big of Ms Pelosi to stand with the Dalai Lama, what does she propose that we do. I think all or most of us have those same feelings. China has persecuted the Tibetians for-ever, no one has ever helped. It’s a crying shame to me, that the U.S. helps everyone else in the world, but who dares to confront China? Allow the Tibetians to live in peace. That is all they have ever wanted.

Once again Pelosi is overstepping her congressional powers and is trying to make US foreign policy. Before this, she did with with Syria. Regardless of your stance on Tibet vs China, she CAN NOT be making such policy statements and should be reprimanded!

Does Pelosi really know something about Tibet?! NO. The Pelosi Lama knows nothing about it.

Why don’t she come back here an do something constructive for the folks that pay her salary, like the gas prices, pending recession, maybe passing some laws to protect our folks. She has been a poor Speaker an she might have left her brains in SF. My guess she will call for a boycot of the Olympics.

“Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem”, Massachusetts State Motto, or read in plain English “By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty.” Apparently, people of chinese ancestry neither understands nor appreciates the true spirit of America. Tibetans are engaging a fight over the basic value of the American independent war, i.e., “Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils.”

Unless she made this visit as a private citizen, she should be barred from returning to the United States. As a private citizen, she has every right to visit anyone she wants. Anyway, I hope they both had a productive visit.

Nancy Polosi you have done a couragous act. I applaud your leadership. Our present administration has done nothing;as usual. I suppose there no oil in Tibet. Destruction of Tibet and its Buddhist cultue is one of the greatest horrors commited by a big power against a small country. Destruction of Tibetian culture is a great loss to the world. China must get out of Tibet!

Headline should be: “Pelosi looks for international photo-op”. Here closer, in our hemisphere we have Colombia,an ally which has been fighting a narco-guerrilla movement for decades, which now receives millions in aid from Venezuela, and the Democrats give the cold shoulder to Uribe its president.

Pelosi needs to stop interfering in the politics of other countries and use her (elected) time to work on our own country’s issues, of which there are sufficient number to keep her occupied 24/7 365 days a year

Senator Pelosi is to be commended for not bowing to China’s thuggish attempts to demonize the Dalai Lama. China’s leaders seem unable to understand that no one outside of China will believe such silly lies. Funny, China thinks that outright lying is a diplomacy tool! Of course we have to add Bush/Cheney to that category as well.

Posted by: Ramie | March 21, 2008, 10:07 am 10:07 am

Doesnt she have anything better to do than going to India and talk rubbish about independent Tibet? If she really cares so much about freedom of other people, why not call for the independence of Palestine or Northern Ireland or breaking up Spain, Belgium and a host of other western countries. Leave China alone. And for the record, I am not Chinese.

Posted by: Jacek | March 21, 2008, 10:12 am 10:12 am

Such vile bile from the Pelosi haters. Relax. If you go back and actually read this article, you’d see this meeting with the Dalai Lama was set up prior to the protests in Tibet – there is no subversive plot to take over Republican diplomacy. Even your beloved George W. Bush recently met with the Dalai Lama, enraging China’s leadership. Freedom is so inconvenient.

Hey Anna –
Mitch is talking about the Logan act — signed in 1799, making it a felony for any citizen without the proper authority, to represent US policy abroad. “Fact finding” missions, like Charlie Wilson going to Afghanistan, are not the same as this. Had Wilson gone to the grand dirka-dirka of Afghanistan and claimed, “We will support you.” He would have found himself in hot water, too. Pelosi needs to cut the grand-standing and focus on domestic issues… which is funny because I’m pretty sure that’s written somewhere in her job description (ref. US Constitution)

Posted by: jrl0082 | March 21, 2008, 10:39 am 10:39 am

Although, politically inconvenient and perhaps not well thought out, U.S. representatives have the right to meet with anyone they wished and provide an opinion. Unfortunately, our government is not standing unified in its overall position on China.
While Congress makes ill-timed and meaningless grandstand gestures, the entire G.W. Bush Administration has gone out of its way to accommodate Beijing and its Communist Regime… [something I also blame Clinton for] I’m certain Reagan wouldn’t have done so much so.
Beijing has demanded the world remain quiet in its opinions and threats of condemnation for China’s actions… Mainly because of its current economic might- which may not last long after this. In the East, it’s all about putting on a front and keeping up appearances- something old school Britain is keenly aware of.
Beijing is modernizing its military and attacking the Western powers in cyberspace now. They’re aiming to rival the U.S. and E.U. in space. They’re bribing non-aligned nations to diplomatically isolate Taiwan as if it’s a prelude to events similar to that just before the 1962 Sino-Indian War.
Tibet, [much like outer China], are not made up of cultures of indigenous Chinese [e.g. the Han]. China is held together by force more than anything under the Communist regime. Tibet would be willing to be incorporated into a federal republic with China proper- not subjegated under them.
Beijing is attempting to conduct ‘cultural genocide’ within its closed borders and pull in all of Asia under its dominion not to dissimilar to that of Imperial Japan of World War II. We would be wise to look deeper into the eyes of the dragon- unfortunately, both the Congress and the President are not that deep.

Hey anna –
Cause McCain is a SENATOR. He has the authority to represent the US, as it’s his primary function as a SENATOR. You may want to consider boning up on your Constitution, before you start throwing out your 25 cent, bumper-sticker cliches.

Pelosi should stay home and do the job she was elected to. She’s not qualified for this international grandstanding and she’s going to create more problems for us at a time when we can hardly afford them.

Posted by: Bob | March 21, 2008, 10:50 am 10:50 am

Ask Tibetans if we should trust China
What do the Tibetan people and the American people have in common? They trusted China.
In 1950 the Chinese began an invasion of Tibet under the orders of Mao Tse-tung. The Tibetans were told they were free to govern themselves. The Chinese took nine years to build roads and occupy the country with Chinese soldiers. All resistance was crushed in 1959 and the Dalai Lama fled to India.
China today is still a totalitarian government that rules with an iron fist. There is no room in China for dissent and human rights violations are common.
Today you can’t go shopping without buying products made in China. In fact it seems that just about everything we buy is made in China. All the big box stores are a direct pipeline into your home from China.
Dollars, jobs and our economic independence are going, going and gone into the vast land of China.
Our government treats China like a good neighbor, but in fact it is not a democratic society, has no unions, uses slave labor, child labor, prison labor to make all that stuff and ships poison toys, food and drugs to the the United States.
Did you know that our government is run on credit from China?
Lots of American businessmen are makings billions from this relationship, but is our standard of living and quality of life improving?
Do you trust China? The Tibetans don’t trust China. They were fooled. Are we now going to be fooled?
Not finding Solutions is a lack of good intentions and imagination.

Whatever Pelosi’s motives it is refreshing to see at least ONE major political figure stand up to China. Americans are too ignorant or naive to realize that of the 94% of chinese who are Han, 94% of the chinese support the crushing of any other race or nationality whether it lives within the borders of China or without. They are incapable of independent thought when it comes to nationalism adn racialism. Does anybody ever think what the purpose fo the Great Wall was? To keep other races and and nationalities OUT. contrast that with the West’s immigration policies over the centuries and maybe you start to see a diffrence. The parallel with the 1936 Games is not as far-fetched as some say. Oh, maybe it is, since Hitler was white, so there coudln’t be a parallel…could there?

I may have the wrong philosophy, but if it’s wrong to fight….then it’s patently wrong ‘and’ stupid to fight when you get nothing out of it. Or perhaps Nancy wasn’t thinking of backing her rhetoric with US force of arms? Yes..I can see China bowing to a silly grandmother from Berkeley simply because she cast her botox manipulated gaze their way. I know that would sure influence me. Oh …wait…NOT!

I do think that while Pelosi has the interest of freedom loving people in Tibet in mind, she could not care less about the freedom of people in the middle east. She and her entire party would throw the people of Iraq to the terrorist’s as long as it would give her more power in Washington DC.

It is the perfect indication of how woefully pathetic coverage has been in this coutry of Tibet over the years that ABC cannot even spell HH Dalai Lama. that’s L-A-M-A. He is a revered teacher. not an Andean animal. So why is it OK for McCain to do a conveniently timed fly in Iraq and pop off about going to Lhasa, but not the leader of the House of Representatives to visit with the Dalai Lama? Just askin . . .

The American People,”We the People”, are among the most kind, generous, giving and good hearted people on the planet; dispite the few unkind and frightened trash talkers you find here.
We have become free and stayed free because our souls cry out for freedom. We, by the grace of God and the sacrifice of those who have come before us have given the opportunity for freedom to millions all over the planet in these 200 yeras plus.
Why not the People of Tibet? Is it because of all the cheap stuff we get from China that makes a very few Americans very rich?
Why not these good and kind people? Why do we side with the totalitarian dictators? Is it because we have lost our way and feel more akin to dictators than to the honest, spiritual, hard working, freedom loving people of Tibet?
You may not believe in Buddhism, understand their culture, identify with their leader, but can you idetify with freedom, liberty, and justice?
Would Jesus take sides on this?
Here now is your basic 101 test on being a real American, what side do you take?

Nancy Pelosi and our Congressional delegation represents the spirit and soul of a proud freedom loving people.
Those who can so easily trash our own people, our own government, our values, our vision and personalize it in such an ugly and even evil way are not my countrymen.
Who are these people who lurk in the darkness and spit out lies and disgusting remarks, as if they are superior to good people, kind people, just people, people of faith and lovers of God.
My heart tells me these people are just the kind of people who would take away our freedom if they had half a chance. They would imprison us for thinking and hoping for a better world. They would in fact crucify those who got in their way.
How are these people different from the totalitarians we have fought for 200 plus years?

A lot of people here know nothing about Nancy Pelosi much less about China and Tibet.
When Pelosi was just a low-ranking congresswoman back in the early 90s, she was already the most outspoken member of Congress on this issue. I worked in the House back then and Pelosi was very involved in demading human rights in China, bringing up the issues of Tibet and trade fairness with China, in fact she distinguished herself by standing out from the pack on these issues again and again.
Before people here criticize her for scurrying around to make a convenient of this, look into her record in the House on this issue.

Posted by: Joe T. | March 21, 2008, 12:36 pm 12:36 pm

So when is Bush going to grow a spine and have Pelosi charged for overstepping her powers?
This is the second time she has done this since becoming speaker.

Posted by: Nathan | March 21, 2008, 12:40 pm 12:40 pm

Joe T., it’s the wrong issue to be that passionate about. She hasn’t a clue what the real Tibet is about, except her childish girl fantasies of monks and Shangri-La. The issue on Tibet is extremely complex, no less so than Iraq, Afghanistan or Pakistan, or just about any other conflict zones in the world. Her fixation on Tibet makes her dangerous and a poor representative of her district.
While she is calling for troop withdrawal in Iraq, what does she propose we do against China? Will be the embargo of 1.3 billion Chinese satisfy Mrs. Pelosi? Will keeping 1.3 billion Chinese in the poverty of China’s 1960s satisfy Mrs. Pelosi? Maybe we should have a total war with China too? All for what? Putting an egomaniac god-king, the Dalai Lama, to the throne of Tibet? How is a theocracy a better alternative for Tibet?
I’ve long came to the conclusion that those who shout “Free Tibet, Free Tibet” all day long are free of the capacity to think rigorously.

Dear Nancy: Please enjoy yourself on your holiday in India. buy some presents, sample the local cuisine and by all means please feel free to express whatever rhetoric you feel should be the US position on an ongoing crisis within China.
But after you have had all your fun, could you please get your butt back to work and start sorting out all these nagging little problems we currently have in the US? You were elected to do a job–one that you have not done very effectively, to date.

We need action NOW.
Mark and Hui, if Tibet is better than Afghanistan does it mean China is not occupying it illegally and torturing Tibetans?
Army load of Chinese police and army, why are they sent there if Tibetans are happy.
Boycott chinese goods NOW!!
Economic boycott of China is the only remedy for China to respect human rights and stop meddling in peaceloving peoples’ affairs and support nefarious dictators like Sudan. Recently acquired wealth is being used to buy tinpot dictators in africa and also blindfolding some of the good leaders.
It shall end now!!

Posted by: ashok1956 | March 21, 2008, 1:42 pm 1:42 pm

No, no physical war. No peaceloving citizen of world wants that in this time and age. But economic boycott will not only bring fairer world order..a lot of poorer nations in africa, asia and latin america will benefit with this. China has accumulated enough dollars and dares to bully americans and all others. No fair trade. Now this is an opportunity to empower smaller nations and when there is government change in China, trade can be restored at fairer levels for all members of WTO.
Even expel China from WTO, if it does not change its course!!

Most of the above comments are void of compassion for those in Tibet; and most reflect the political struggle of left and right politics. There is a place for that struggle but not here.
Americans of all stripes need to compartmentalize their ideology and reserve it for those moment when it is appropriate.
Dying Tebetians, at the hands of the Chinese Government should cause reflection of what are values as a people are, compassion for the dead, dying and tortured – and unity.
Bless you all,
Jim

I don’t care for much of Pelosi’s politics, but I have to applaud her here. Tibetens should rule Tibet. Not the Chinese. How would the Mexicans feel if we rolled in there with tanks and started to run things? Yes, the U.S. is now married up with China through our various business deals, but it may be time to get a divorce. I’ll take a divorce over an abusive relationship.

Bunch of Tibetan supporters here who couldn’t even tell you the name of its capital joining the bandwagon. It appears that irrespective of our own troubles in Iraq, at home and elsewhere, bashing China is always fashionable. Tibet is a complex problem that can’t be solved with slogans like “Free Tibet” and Pelosi PR trips.

Why is it when the South seeked separation from the Union in the Civil War, it was deemed unacceptable; and a province of China seeked to separate from the central government, most of you all jumped in to call for acceptance? Tibet is part of China, just as Alaska is part of US. Would anyone support the secession of Alaska from the Union if a group of discontented Eskimo staged a violent demostration? Most American would probably hesitate, if not for the oil in Prudhoe Bay, but for the simple fact that a star wold have to come off the flag. Tibet is an issue the Chinese government needs to deal with, as an internal issue. The Palestinians has been seeking independence for how long now? When was the last time House Speaker Pelosi visited the leaders of Hamas or Fatah? Why is the US government not demonizing the Israeli government?
Please do not bring up the human right thing, take a walk in the nearest poverty stricken area and tell me about the human right abuse by the US federal, state, and local government entities.
Allow the Chinese government to deal with the Tibet issue in their own term. The US or any other country have no say in the matter.

As humans we face the “crisis of love”.
How long must we endure the sepratism, selfishness, hate, fear, and terror inflicted upon humanity?
Every crisis is also an opportunity.
May we as a species have our resurrection and adopt love and abandon hate, may we come together for mutual healing and stop inflecting such pain and suffering on each other, may we look on our fellow humans as brothers and sisters and not enemies, may we speak words of kindness and not words of destruction, may we embrace each other as children of God.
There are billions of people on this Earth and we can’t expected them all to understand each other without trying, without extending a hand, without listening and learning.
In the West we look to Jesus Christ as our example of Love. In the East many look to the Buddha as their example of Compassion.
Can we bring these inspirations together in loving wise compassion for the sake of the children of the future?

Once again we are purportedly represented by an extraordinarily self-absorbed woman, who was elected only to Congress, and then by 110,000 votes in a safe district. This is about the same number of votes required to become mayor of Philadelphia. This is why our Founders wisely arranged for foreign policy to be conducted exclusively by the President of the United States. Since her treasonous visit to Syria, Pelosi should have been handcuffed to a cable car in San Francisco.

It is interesting to see that the some American politicans support a theocratic form of government, where the religious leader controls a nation, and keeps it in a backward state.
One has to wonder how many of these politicans would support the Pope controlling the Catholic nations, or a Christian leaders controlling America.
It does not take a system engineer to comprehend that Tibet is far better off today than it was when it was controlled by the Dalai Lama. They now have roads, prospering free markets, a railroad connection to the outside world, Internet connections, cell phone coverage, access to modern goods, etc.
The problem is that many politicans are owned by media, religions, and organizations that profit from the instigation of conflict and war.

Here is what the Chinese government has to say about the Dalai Lama and Tibet:
People with some basic knowledge of the Tibetan history all know that feudal serfdom and theocracy, which were a dictatorship of upper-class monks and nobles, were practiced in the old Tibet under the 14th Dalai Lama, and that the Dalai Lama was the head of serf owners exercising feudal rule. Under that regime, the overwhelming majority of Tibetans were either serfs or slaves deprived of personal freedom. They were often traded or given away as gifts by their owners, and were subjected to torture in extremely inhumane conditions in their owners’ private prisons. Serfdom in the old Tibet was no less cruel and brutal than that practiced in Medieval Europe.
After Tibet’s peaceful liberation in 1951, the serfs and slaves in Tibet strongly demanded the abolition of feudal serfdom and the introduction of democratic reform. However, some members of the Tibetan ruling clique were obstinately opposed to reform. They tried to perpetuate feudal serfdom in Tibet to protect their vested interests. They launched an all-round armed rebellion in 1959, and openly made separatist call for “Tibet independence.” With the support of Tibetan lamas and people, the Central Government speedily quelled this rebellion aimed at splitting China. In order to restore the dark autocratic feudal serfdom, the Dalai Lama fled China, thus setting himself against the Central Government and the Tibetan people. The Dalai Lama has tried hard not to face the truth of his cruel rule in the old Tibet, and he has never shown any repentance for it. Yet he has posed as the “spokesman” of freedom of Tibet and the “champion” of human rights and human dignity in an attempt to mislead the international community. To glorify the Dalai Lama for his so-called “contribution” to the advancement of human rights and call him a “fighter for human rights” not only distorts history but also makes a mockery of freedom, human rights and human dignity.
After the Dalai Lama went into exile following the failed armed rebellion, democratic reform was introduced in Tibet in response to the strong call of the Tibetan people. Feudal serfdom, a most barbarous system, was abolished and regional autonomy was instituted in Tibet in 1965. The serfs and slaves under the Dalai Lama’s rule are now masters of their own house, and they take an active part in the running of state affairs and fully exercise autonomous rights provided for by China’s Constitution and laws. The Tibetan people exercise regional autonomy and manage their ethnic affairs. Tremendous social and economic changes have taken place in Tibet thanks to the support of the Central Government and people across China. Tibet’s population has grown to 2.81 million from about 1.15 million at the time of peaceful liberation, of whom the vast majority are Tibetans. With Tibet’s economy growing at a rate of over 12 percent for many years, there has been fundamental improvement in the lives of the Tibetan people. The opening of the Qinghai-Tibet railway, a great historic undertaking, will greatly boost the economic and social development in Tibet. There was not a single modern school in old Tibet, whereas by the end of 2006, Tibet had 1,011 schools at various levels, enrolling 534,000 students, or 94 percent of school-age children. The rights of the Tibetan people are ensured by law. Tibet’s traditional culture is well preserved. Freedom of religious belief is fully guaranteed. There are 1,780 lamaseries in Tibet with more than 46,000 lamas and nuns. The state has allocated huge amount of funding in these years for the maintenance of lamaseries. Both the Central Government and the Tibetan autonomous government have always given top priority to ensuring proper balance between economic development and environmental protection. There are now in Tibet 38 nature reserves, covering a total are of 410,000 square kilometers. Environmental monitoring shows that Tibet has a good environment. Its water and air are basically pollution free, most of its areas are in a natural state and Tibet has one of the best natural environments in the world. Tibet has never enjoyed such development and stability as it does today.

It seemed that in the mind of the Left, he can do nothing right. On the other hand, I don’t agree with all of his policies either. Regardless, I have never seen such vitriolic hatred for any US President. Even though I did not always agree with President Clinton’s policies, I still respected him as my president. I believe that the way to avoid this cynicism you wrote about is by taking issue with our leader’s actions and policies without resorting to ad hominem attacks.
I will revise my earlier remarks by saying that Speaker Pelosi is an “ineffective leader,” rather than a “poor leader.” I will give her the benefit of the doubt by believing that she means well. However, we need more than just good intentions from our Speaker of the House. All of our legislators who embark on diplomatic journeys need to be careful about the implications of such trips.

I love the Dolly Llama. She was great in that pic with Burt Reynolds where she played a madam of a Texas bordello. Very funny stuff.
I didn’t realize she was in trouble with the Chinese, I didn’t even know she was Chinese.

I’m essentially an isolationist, but if our government is going to talk the talk about going up against the enemies of freedom, then it’s about time we stood up to one of freedom’s worst enemies, China. And the internet goons can make all the stupid comments they want, if they don’t like the way our government does business, stop electing self-motivated idiots like Pelosi and W into office and start electing the people who give a damn.

So the Tibetans are worthy of our help but not the Irsqis?
And how does Pelosi suggest we help the Tibetans? I already have a “Free Tibet!” bumpersticker, and that’s the only support the Democrats are willing to allow.

Posted by: John D | March 22, 2008, 10:29 am 10:29 am

Wow, there is a lot of hatred expressed in these responses. Much of it is the typical liberal mantra “Blame America” or “Blame Bush”. Our nation is so divided within that it become more and more likely that it will not survive as we know it. It won’t get better, only worse no matter who is in office. Why?Because no one can unite a nation that doesn’t want to be united! Pelosi is the worst offender and she is a fool. She does everyhing in her power to divide America, because she hates Bush so much. What authority does she have to make any commitment to the Dalai Lama. Any committments to any foreign leader must go through the State Department. There can be significant consequences of speaking out of turn. China is not really our friend, but there are important considerations to weigh before one confronts a potential military enemy. There is a right way, a wrong way, and the Nancy Pelosi way. Those of you libs who support her in this need your heads examined! You have no idea what is really happening in the world and where we are headed. Nor do you care so long as you get to spout your hatred and get your “freebies” at taxpayers expense. How pathetic!

There is something we can all do about China, either because of the current situation in Tibet, their conversion of our wealth into their military buildup, their currency manipulation, or their attack on our manufacturing base.
Boycott Chinese products. It’s easy. And it’s the most powerful thing we as individuals can do.

Funny that someone who has accomplished ’0′ good in over a year of house leadership is trying to tell someone else how to govern. The U.S. recovered from a depression, recovered from 9-11 and the economy roared for six years. Put the democrats in charge of congress and one year later the nation is on the verge of collapse. Now go ahead and put more democrats in office. I’ll laugh at you fools even if I starve to death.

Nancy Pelosi has no more right to represent our government in foreign policy than I do. We have a Secretary of State whose job it is to speak for our government, whether that be run by a republican or a democrat.
Mrs. Pelosi ought to stay out of the foreign policy basis.

Tibet Autonomous Regional Academy of Social Sciences Institute of Economic Research deputy director of the Wang Yuan in an interview with reporters, said that more than half a century since the peaceful liberation of Tibet, the central concern and strong support for Tibet’s economic and social development, the Tibetan people of all ethnic groups strive to improve the production and living conditions , Tibet’s infrastructure has been effectively improve the economic and social development has entered a new historical stage. In 1972 this Dalai Lama visited an Indian Saint of French Decent – at Sri Aurobindo Ashram Ponidcherry – the Saint is formarly known as “The Mother” by all the Devotee. After going into meditation – she talked to this Dalai Lama – that, “I and Sri Aurobindo, wants to you take back Tibet by Force. Take it its yours.” Dalai Lama never acted to get Tibet back, but He was destined to try this after that day. And so is what I see. It may be noted that Sri Aurobindo passed away in 1950 – and had predicted at least 14 years before China attached Tibet – that China would take over Tibet and then march towards India and other countries. In 1948 Sri Aurobindo – had envisioned that Only USA can stop China’s expansionist culture. JFK was notified about these comments from Sri Aurobindo – in 1962 China’s war against Inida/Tibet. JFK ridiculed saying that US intelligence had no idea that China is going to take over Tibet – and how come a saint sitting in his Ashram – never came out of that ashram for 42 long years – can see this so clearly. But then he did whatever he could – and failed.
I support Nancy Polosi for he visit. Since she is right about her Karma theory – Just as Dalai Lama is destined to take over Tibet – After that statement from The Mother – USA is destined to help Tibet and India to stop China after the declaration from Sri Aurobindo.
So both US and Lama are destined to Free Tibet from the cluches of China – and its the Karma of both to see that it happens!

Once again, the forces of intolerance and violence are loudly trumpeting against Speaker Pelosi for speaking out on human rights issues. All reasonable people should stand up for better human relations everywhere. Tibet, like darfur, Burma, Zimbabwe and other places wher human rights is being trmpled under the feet of principals of dictatorial regimes, deserves better. It is a gaping wound in the conscience of the international community. To dismiss the fight for human rights, autonomy and freedom in Tibet–a place that China took by force under Chairman Mao–is not just a “hollywood” fiction, but human necessity and imperative.

What about the suffering and persecution of the Palestinian people by Israeli government financed by the USA taxpayer?
Why doesn’t Pelosi only raise the stick and not the carrot at foreign human rights abuses and not USA or Israeli human rights abuses?
I’m all for human rights. But let’s face the facts. Sounds like the USA politians (Jimmy Carter aside) uses human rights as a political weapon or foreign policy tool rather than out of a desire to help.

Our President should have said it before any democrat did. There shouldn’t be double standard in human rights! We should reach out to Tibet and help them to get rid of communist oppression.
Olympic games should also be boycotted!

Many of these posts go to show us how many people dislike Polosi. She is not consistent in who she thinks should be free, it’s a photo opp for Libs.. nothing more. If she believed in freedom for all than such dislike would not come form these posts. But sadly Polosi is much like China… she decides who should have freedom and who should not.. and you can add the Dali Lama to that list.. if we are speaking karma, he has some bad stuff around him. He has been putting down the US for Iraq and now he wants us to help in Tibet.
Despite the Dali Lamas phony politics and beliefs, I do feel we need to be tough on China, and Bush should be very strong with them.

So these “freedom loving people” deserve more of a chance than people in Iraq and Afghanistan. The hypocracy is ridiculous. Neo-cons and liberals are the same, intervene, intervene, and intervene some more but criticize the other sides intervention in order to get into power.

Freedom is a very valuable commodity, and I support all people anywhere willing to fight for it.
I just find it insulting that someone who didn’t give a damn about the freedom of the Iraqi people expects us to believe she really cares two bits about the people of Tibet other than to use their leader for a photo-op.

While there is very little on which I typically find agreement with Ms Pelosi, she has long been one of the few members of Congress to have the courage to stand up to the dictatorship in Beijing. Even during the Clinton presidency, she was at odds with said administration over de-linking China’s human rights record with granting them permanent Most Favored Nation trading status. Her comments about “karma” may have been a bit goofy, but at least she has been consistent and courageous on the subject through both Democrat and Republican adminstrations. God bless her for it.

A shame the world didn’t put up this kind of fuss when Saddam & Sons were gassing, raping and maiming. What happens now? Pelosi and that worthless gaggle of bafoons at the U.N. publicly wag their fingers at China and it quietly fades out of the spotlight. Make no mistake, that show was for HER benefit, not for the opressed people of Tibet.

Posted by: Jeff | March 22, 2008, 6:35 pm 6:35 pm

There is a big difference between Darfur and Tibet and invading Iraq for oil, unless they both have oil I don’t know about.
I do understand though that every time we get involved in any way we are bashed. So is the answer to stay out of all other politics in other countries? I guess there is a case for that. And a case for just getting involved if our interest are at stake. Still we call ourselves a humanitarian country so we get involved. We can act like the rest of the world and only care for number one.
We usually cannot win in global opinion no matter what we do.

Good Old Nancy—Anytime there is a chance to get her name in the headlines she jumps at the chance! She is a woman who wants to keep her name in the public’s memory for when she decides to run for president. She has lost the respect of her peers in Washington, lost the support from the public and the only one who doesn’t get it is her. I fear she will kill America when she votes at the convention. It’s obvious she isn’t supporting Hillary because she wants to be the first female president. Hillary is more qualified to lead our country in ’08.
