The Politics of Hope
HARRISBURG, PENN. — It hasn’t been enough for Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, to paint her rival, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, as inexperienced.
So she’s added a new attack to her arsenal: he’s duplicitous as well.
Before a capacity crowd at the Forum auditorium Tuesday afternoon, Clinton assailed Obama for misleading voters on NAFTA.
"My opponent said one thing in Ohio and then his top economic adviser told the Canadian government, ‘Don’t worry what he said, that’s just politics.’"
Boooo! Boooo!
She attacked him for saying he would withdraw US troops from Iraq while his (now former) foreign policy adviser Samantha Power communicated a more nuanced message to the BBC.
"I gotta tell you, there’s a big difference between talk and action, but if you’re going to talk you should mean what you say so people can count on it," Clinton told the cheering crowd.
Her references to Obama — "my opponent" — were consistently met with boos from the crowd.
And then — while Clinton was detailing all the ways Obama can’t be trusted — an interesting yell came from a young man in the audience.
"We hate Obama!" he yelled. "Obama sucks!"
Just one guy in just one crowd. But I’ve been at a lot of rallies this year and haven’t heard anything like it before.
Welcome to the state of the Democratic race.

Mitt Romney's Full Speech at CPAC 2012
FIRST GENTLEMAN in the WHITE HOUSE
With the recent Spitzer blowout, it reminded us of the 1990′s. Bill was impeached as President but if history repeats itself, you can’t impeach a First Gentleman? So, instead of focusing on the most important issues, the country will be diverted again to the 1990′s soap opera. CAN WE REALLY AFFORD ANOTHER SEX SCANDAL IN THE WHITE HOUSE?

Hillary will burn the house down before she lets Obama win. There is no price to high for the Democratic Party or the for the Nation, for that matter, to pay to ensure her ascendency.
16 years of culture war are not enough, Hillary demands 8 more year. And she’ll do anything and say anything to wage it.

Obama is very inexperienced. And on both NAFTA and Iraq, his top advisors, communicated very different messages from what Obama was actually telling voters. Those are established facts so why is it werong for Hillary to talk about it?

Hillary gave factually true info regarding OBAMA. The Canadian memo and Samantha Powers prove she is right. Obama is in Miss. using racial language to gain votes and then paints the Clintons as racists. PLEASE!!!!! Obama is one slick, phony and very inexperienced!

Jake I was waiting for you to post a topic on Obama memo on Clinton foriegn experience claim. The memo clearly outlined Hillary claim of foriegn experience to be false. She did not even hold a security clearance during Bills presidency.
That should be a talking point..

Clinton’s favorite hobby: not telling the truth!. All of her’accomplishments’ in foreign policy, have been unmasked as untrue by Greg Craig, former director of the U.S. Plannin Policy from the U.S. State Dept.
Conclusion: everything coming from her cmapaign is FALSE!

rovian/clintonian, lying, swiftboat attacks from the nasty deceitful hillary.
She should be claiming naftagate as her own as it was HER campaign that did this damage, no matter how much spin they spew!
Everytime Obama responds to her dishonesty, hillary supporters consistently accuse of him of playing the race card. More lies, and that is the only way she continues to try to win. She will be destroyed, as God does not like ugly!

If Jake posts about the Obamma attack memo I am sure he will also post about the author-Obamma’s foreign policy adviser Greg Craig. He is a lawyer who is currently representing the killer of a Puerto Rican solidier. He has also represented Reagan shooter John Hinkley, Cuba in getting Elian Gonzalez deported, Ted Kennedy in his nephew’s rape trial, etc.

Hilllary is lying about the Canadian “NAFTA” issue, as the Canadian government has come out in full press that it was CLINTON’S rep that told them her “NAFTA” speak was not sincere! Our press, however has chosen to bury this declaration!
Also, Obama has had and continues to have the correct stance on Iraq, we did not and do not belong there!
Stop her twisting of facts in the “prevail at all costs” tactics!

Why does it seem like every time Hillary opens her mouth and accuses Obama of something it is really Hillary who is guilty of it? Did she already forget about the “he should be the VP/he’s not’s ready to be VP” comments from her campaign yesterday?
The problem with Obama’s surrogates is that they tell the truth. What Samantha Power said was the truth. By the time a new President is in office the situation in Iraq may be different so whoever it is will need to figure out what to do then. No matter what any of the candidates says, the plan to leave Iraq will have to be evaluated so that it does not jeopardize the troops in any way. It’s common sense. I guess Hillary thinks all Americans are stupid.

Hillary’s just desperately trying to prove how divisive she can really be. Ferraro was backing her up with her “partisanshp! yes!” speech.

Negative attacks are expressions of deep hatred.
I guess Clinton enjoys the fact that it was she who made voter to hate her future running mate, if she really plans to have Obama as her VP.

I can see why she has so many admirers… her audacity is stunning! Sort of like Nero burning Rome… not a good thing but spectacular.
While I would never vote for her… I must admit she can fight and she doesn’t pull any punches. Last weekend, Obama rejected her joint ticket suggestion… so now it’s take no prisoners and make sure to cripple him in the eyes of the Super Delegates! Her next step is to suggest an Edwards VP to get his votes in Penn.

You have that all wrong. Many Clinton supporters are sick of Obama and his nasty hateful supporters. We support the best candidate in November. Catiger: Negative attacks in politics are neither fueled by hatred or race. You have to accentuate the positive and call the other opponent on his less than stellar qualities. It is the political process that has been going on for over 200 years. Just because Mrs. Clinton is a pro, and Mr. Obama is a neophyte, that is no reason to say they are spewing hatred. Mr.OBama and his surrogates have been spewing quite a bit of negativity on their own. Would you say that is hate based, or is he just trying to win an election?

Toby: Mr. Obama only uses those racial “Code” words in front of a predominantly black audience. Plus he launches into his Souther Baptist preacher cadence and affectation. It is so painfully obvious how he panders to the blacks, speaks like an educated Harvard grad to the people in Minnesota. Pure political pandering, and yet, no ones calls him out on this most insincere way of pandering to the people he needs votes from.
Posted by: Jay | March 11, 2008, 2:32 pm 2:32 pm
Hillary is totally distorting Senator Obama’s position on the Iraq withdrawal. He said specifically that “he’d be just as cautious in getting us out as we were careless in getting in.” Powers was echoing the theme but in different terms. Senator Clinton is the candidate of duplicity. Her campaign contacted the Canadian embassy with a wink on NAFTA which she never opposed until she decided to run for office. The irony of the Ferraro comments is that Senator Clinton has scoundered a huge advanatage by poorly managing her campaign. She has failed to lock up the nomination dispite the fact that the electorate has been made up of women to the tune of 57%. This just goes to show that she is unelectable when she faces the entire nation especially after she is done breaking the democratic party. Regardless of the happy face all the party hacks try to put on it.

LOL the misperceptions in these posts amaze me sometimes. The so called memo from the Obama camp has been negated by interviews with others who were with Clinton during the times she touts foreign policy experience as First Lady. Some of the people disputing the Obama camp memo details are Democratic Senators, Republican Senators, former Presidents and Vice-Presidents, and officials of foreign governments. The memo is obviously a campaign attack. Always consider the sources people.

it’s just pathetic that this negative crap is working. she has shown to be just nasty as hell, and people say that she is a fighter. but it’s not a fight… it’s an attack, just because she is losing. so… someone chooses your opponent, therefore you have to tear him down. rather than standing on her record, she rips into everyone else around her.
it reminds me of bush/cheney, any time someone disagrees, they are unpatriotic and love terrorists.
the worst part is the hypocrisy. absolute shameless hypocrisy. say and do anything to destroy the other person, then claim to be attacked when they respond. demand that the other side disclose documentation yet stonewall at every turn. claim that the other side is consorting with felons, yet ignore a public life riddled with scandal.

To error is human and all……she is human isn’t she?
I mean you gotta 3 Trillion Dollar price tag. 10 of thousand of dead and disabled Americans; even more Irakis.
You got the lost opportunity costs, i.e., toil and treasure that coulda been spent protecting the nation’s infrastructure, chemical plants, nuclear plants, ports, datasystems, etc. You got the negative goodwill throughout the world created by the war.
And UBL is still alive in Pakistan and the Taliban is reconstituting in Afghanistan.
This is not rocket science folks. Even Senator Colburn-OK has admitted that invading Irak may not have been a good idea.
Any takers?

It all depends upon your perspective and who you support. No ones is owed this nomination. Clinton keeps saying that Obama is “all talk.” It’s true, he does talk about his policy positions. All the time. And what does Clinton talk about? Obama.
Maybe she should start talking about her own policy initiatives for a change. I’m beginning to think that Clinton is the only real “Obamaniac.” Can she stop talking about him for just a day? We get the message, Hillary: Obama is a childlike cult-leading friend to slumlords who isn’t even qualified to answer a phone, and his supporters are naive and idiotic to approve of a secretly pro-life Muslim extremist. We all understand your campaign’s position – Obama is the devil.
So Senator Clinton, why not tell us a little bit about yourself for once?

The Sinbad-Sheryl Crow-Clinton Diplomatic Mission is Hillarious.
Sinbad has said the closest thing to a red phone moment Hillary had on the trip was where the three of them would stop to eat.
It is Clear that if Obama wants to get the exerience he needs to be ready on DAY ONE. He must Find Sinbad and Sheryl Crow and visit the troops in Bosnia. For good measure he should take along “The Rock” and maybe even “Kid Rock” too.
This way he gain the requiste experience to put him on par with Hillary

I don’t really understand how Senator Obama continues to campaign on a platform of being against the war. He didn’t have the awesome responsibility to vote against it OR for it.
Hillary spoke on the Senate floor saying “This is a very difficult vote. This is probably the hardest decision I have ever had to make…A vote for it is not a vote to rush to war; it is a vote that puts awesome responsibility in the hands of our President and we say to him – use these powers wisely and as a last resort.”
She came from a deeply wounded state from the attacks of 9/11 and as such, was compelled to react to the needs of her constituents: “In balancing the risks of action versus inaction, I think New Yorkers who have gone through the fires of hell may be more attuned to the risk of not acting. I know that I am.”
Hindsight is 20/20. It was also at a time when America was hurt and George W. Bush was enjoying some of his highest approval ratings ever (remember those days?).
I think Senator Obama and his supporters are doing this country a great disservice by diminishing her experience with his continued negative attacks on this issue. I also don’t understand how he can continue to accept the support of folks like Senators Kerry, Kennedy, Rockefeller and Dodd because if Hillary had poor judgment by supporting the war, then surely so do these men. It just doesn’t make sense that he wants it both ways.

Maybe they were smart enough not to vote for someone who says that he is different than other politicians and turns around and says one thing and does another right before the election. Seems like the people of Ohio got it Right!

Senator Rockefeller isn’t running for president … she voted for the war, and never admitted it was a mistake. she is as stubborn as bush. another quote that sealed the deal on her brand of politics was in the debate where she said, and i can’t remember the bill, “I voted for it but I hoped it wouldn’t pass.” what the heck is that supposed to mean?
all in all, i don’t think obama is perfect, squeaky clean, or will not make mistakes. i DO however think that the clintons are a known quantity… known for dirty politics, a trail of scandals over the past 20 years, and will do and say anything to keep their power in washington.
i am willing to take a risk on obama. i am still learning as much as i can, but right now, he wins hands down over the clintons.

I have to hand it to Hillary and her supporters. When it comes to hate mongering, offensive rhetoric, and deception, no one can hold them a light to run by.
If you don’t like something or do something wrong, you just smear it with lies until whatever was really there is so covered it takes a lot of digging to find it. A lot of digging and about $50 million….

Last night at Obama’s rally in Jackson, he blamed Clinton for the picture of him dressed in local African garb. Yet at the last debate, he dismissed this notion and accepted Clinton’s word. Mississippi has the largest percentage of African-American voters of any state and this is an obvious racial play. Can you say “race card”. It’s not hard to see that Obama is again utilizing something he does not believe to get votes. And the media again focuses on poor Obama who is constantly suffering from “Hillary attacks” while he so gentlemanly attempts to “pushback”.

jim: You must not be listening to the debates. She said that if she had it to do over she would vote against the war. The problem Obama has is that he says that if you voted for the war then you do not have the judgement to be president. I don’t remember him saying John Kerry should be held to his standard. I think he said that he supported Kerry in 04. How can you support Kerry’s judgement and not Hillarys’? I think they both voted for the war. If you are chairman of the senate intellegence committee it seems that you failed if you apply Obama’s standard.

Politics = Dirty.
That’s the way it goes and no matter what sort of movement Senator Obama wants to start to change that (a new kind of politics, hope, etc.), it is naive. Completely admirable, but naive. Politics is what makes the world goes around and when in Rome, do as the Romans do.
Senator Clinton is a known quantity and whereas some may want to chalk that up to only dirty politics and scandals, we must remember that both candidates are about 95% the same on the critical issues facing our nation: the economy, withdraw from Iraq, health care, immigration reform, lifting the middle class, etc.
If you want to base your decision on that 5% margin, then you should definitely do so. That is what makes this country so great–freedom to choose. If you are making a decision based on risk, however, be careful what you ask for. Too much is at stake to risk anything.

It is amazing how the hardcore Obama cultists gloss right over the facts, whether it is the mixed message on NAFTA or Iraq. I would really like to see Sen. Obama be an effective U.S. Senator before he becomes president. He’s got chairmanships, he has a lot of power already. I would like to see him effectively use what he has before we hand over the entire executive branch to him. There’s a lot of ambition there but I don’t see any results yet.
Posted by: hopesprings52 | March 11, 2008, 4:06 pm 4:06 pm
I am glad to hear Hillary is drawing attention to the fact that Obama is telling voters one thing about NAFTA and Iraq withdrawal while his senior advisers communicate his real intentions to foreign government officials and media. This point is huge and these are not the only examples of Obama’s duplicitous behavior. In fact, it is Obama, not Clinton, who will say anything to get elected. He likes to talk about audacity–and his hypocracy is truly audacious. He repeatedly points the finger at others and then engages in a more egregious version of the offending conduct himself. Remember how he slammed John Edwards for the support unions afforded him in NV–look who is taking the same support now. Remember his promise to take public financing? Remember when he said he was “a proponent of single-payer, government sponsored healthcare” until he decided it was not politically expedient?
The longer I look at Obama, the less I find to be hopeful about.

Let’s see, Hillary wants the voters in Florida and Michigan to have a voice. (Why should that be construed as negative?)
She has expressed an interest in a joint ticket. (How is that polarizing or fracturing the party?)
Obama and his advisors have no one but themselves to blame now that Hillary can point out some real differences between what Obama says, and what his advisors say he really means.
It is fair game. But I don’t have enough hankies for the Obama supporters who fret when the going gets tough, rather than bucking up.
Last comment. The posts upthread commenting on Hillary’s foreign affairs experience by country is hysterical. The reason that the Obama campaign is focusing on Hillary is because they have NOTHING quite so in-depth to write about Obama.
I’m not sure that’s going to have a lot of traction with the voters of Pennsylvania. But I do know that some have read the unkind comments the campaign have made about the voters of Ohio.

It is sad to see the nation divided between the Republicans and the Democrats and then doubly sad to see the democrats divide on Clinton-Obama.
Hilary is more experienced, and she didn’t cave under the tremendous negativity that political underhandedness and public scrutiny laid on her.
Public comments on NPR last week captioned Democratic supporters going for 16 years on Clinton-Obama.
This sounds like a WIN WIN to me,
We get Clinton’s experience and tenacity combines with Obama’s idealism and finesse. Obama has a chance to become an experienced world leader as VP to the most politically experienced woman, and America, the land of ‘e pluribus unum’ can demonstrate the strength of our diversity, expressed as both genders and multiple ethnicities.
Let’s look far ahead to a bright future, lets not be short sighted. Let’s unite the genders and ethnicities. Let us not fall prey to the polictical divisiveness.

Joris : The number of caucuses he won actually shadow his electability in general election. In Texas, he won 10% in caucus but lost 3-4% in primary. In Washington, he won a stunning 37% in caucus, but only won 4% in primary. Now, if you redo the math again, you will find Senator Obama actually lost the popular vote by a large margin.

Do the people who support Sen Clinton want to open up such a negative image before going against McCain…a war hero.
I just don’t understand a woman who has lists…who throws stones …and is upset when someone calls her a monster…and asks for that person to be fired…turns around and runs a campaign like this.
There were what 5 witnesses to Brodie saying her campaign called before Obama’s.
The whole issue with the Irish resolution that she claimed in her foreign policy…
Her “I am fighting for the Florida voters” when she signed a deal that dissed those Florida voters…and now points her fingers at the other candidates who did
…because SHE is the President.
What is wrong with you people who think THIS is the person we want as our President…ugh.
…if she keeps this up for two more days…that is it for me…
She needs to back off…
or I am taking some time off to start asking about the lists…LISTS…that everyone on her side gets mad if they are alluded to. She is so selfish
It’s all coming out…Tyson and her husband the TAX Record discovery
Her brother the 400k that he had to return

Go look at what each of them accomplished in the Senate last year… it will blow you away at how mmany bills etc…Obama put forth successfully into the process…and how many Sen Clinton worked on…and tell me who would be coming up with more solutions…
Go…I promise you you’ll find your answers in the facts. I think the Daily Kos even lists them on his site…because there is no comparison as to who has the most with the most reaching over the aisle.
If you weren’t all stuck in this thought proces from the arguments with the republicans over the past 7-8 years about the Clintons you would learn with just a little scratch at the surface that she has been there six years and when you look at what Obama did last year alone…
Just go to the Library of Congress and see for yourself.

Crisis08, you need our judgement? My judgement would be that voters need to stop listening to people like you. You rely on nothing other than lies that have been proven to be lies. Obama is a Christian, it’s as simple as that. It’s black and white, no pun intended. He is not a Muslim, and everybody knows it, including you. But you have no other argument, so you continue to spew the same lies you’ve heard other people pass around. Please give it up, it says more about you than it does about Barack Obama.

dl: Again? Sorry I read about his accomplishments over and over here and everywhere, and each time I would just tell the person who posted such things to stop because such kind of posts only would do more harms than goods to your candidate. Let’s see: Authored and co-authored nearly 600 bills within one year? Does it mean 2-3 bills per day? How much had he spent on each bill? How much thoughts had he put on each bill? How much energy and time will he spend on follow-up to make sure those bills indeed work? Even more troubling, how seriously has he been taking his job? which is, indeed an important. Is it because bills are just bills like words are just words? You really should get a clue about who you are supporting.
Posted by: nosense03 | March 11, 2008, 5:27 pm 5:27 pm
dl: BTW, let alone he actually wrote these bills since there is no way, I don’t think he even read the bills before put on his name. Does it show how irresponsible he is? Does it even trouble you? Just calm down, and give me an honest answer. Thanks.

I am sorry do you know what Hillary did on her committees? Do you know how involved she was with her bills?
and what were her successes…
my reference looks at recorded facts. What i know is Hillary is throwing things out like “I was involved with the Irish Peace Accord” …then the Nobel guy comes out and says…that’s not true…and she is being disingenuous at best.
What I know is he was minor on most of those… but loook there are 15 or so significant pieces of legislature and movement compared to her what 6?
I don’t know everything about my candidate…no one does… and I am pretty sure you don’t.

dl: You really need to think more about those so-called achievements. The only thing I read from these stunning numbers is that truth always needs some thought and research. Apparently both of us should do so.
Posted by: nosense03 | March 11, 2008, 5:41 pm 5:41 pm
There are Republicans whose job it is – whose work it is – who specialize in -researching, and scheming, and plotting – to find any and all weakenesses of their opponents. They then exploit and strategically exaggerate those weaknesses, even going so far as to spread rumours and lies.
If you think they weren’t going to mention that Barack had been voted the most liberal Senator, and that’s he’s only been in the national Senate 3 years, and that he was against the war, etc., you are incredibly naive.
It will be their first order of business in ads to portray him as an ‘inexperienced anti-war liberal,’ and there will be lots more smears about possible Muslim ties. You’ve already seen the beginning of it. John McCain won’t condone it. But there are many others in the Republican party who will terrified of Obama, and they will truly say anything.
The Clinton campaign has raised important and legitimate questions and issues to consider when selecting a commander in Chief. While like any campaign, they can’t control all their supporters, I have seen the most hideous lies and exaggerations about Hillary and the Clintons from Obama supporters.
The Republicans months ago, said they would “eviscerate” whoever the Democratic candidate is. How do you think they “eviscerate” (=disembowel) people? With candy and flowers?
They have tried to “eviscerate” the Clintons before. They are the source of all that negative stuff out there. The Clintons have been mostly loved by the Democratic party, because of all their hard work, and accomplishments.
But the Republicans haven’t gotten their chance to try and “eviscerate” Barack yet, but if they get the chance to – they will. They will blow you away will what they will do. And his biggest problem is he doesn’t have enough of a national record to prove that they’re wrong.
I say this as a devoted democrat who has seen this many times in the Republican strategies, and I care. I want a Democrat to win. I don’t think it looks good for Barack in a general.
Hillary has been “eviscerated,” it would really just be more of the same.
Anotherwords, they couldn’t weaken her more. She has more of a proven national record.
Although they won’t admit it, I actually think there are many Republicans who would like the Clintons to get us out of deficit and recession and into record surplus and prosperity, again. Like Bill’s administration did.

Lots of Democrats say to know her isn’t to love her:
A few elections ago there was a fund raiser put on for Gore by his friends. Gore was to be the star attraction. Hillary found out about this event and demanded to be invited and this was agreed to by the organizers. When Hillary showed up she started working the room for money for herself – sucking the money away from Gore. She off some BIG TIME Democrats and some of those people today are supporting Obama despite having been in the inner Clinton circle.
Hillary will have no one but herself to blame when she fails to make her life long vision a reality.

And Clinton’s campaign didn’t talk to the Canadians about NAFTA???
Oops, that’s right, mainstream media didn’t bother to give that story the same coverage!
As to those who say an Obama-Clinton ticket is the way, the 90% of us Obama supporters who would have voted for Hillary before if push came to shove are now going for Nader as Plan B. (Only 10% of us would have chosen McCain as Plan B.) Hillary Clinton is progressively alienating Obama supporters and, especially, blacks. I, and I know of others who feel the same way, would no longer support and Obama-Clinton ticket. We also find it ridiculous that she would suggest Obama get on her ticket when he is leading (the audacity of audacity, as someone wrote)! And that she would do this even as her campaign continues its smear tactics (the noncommital “Obama’s not a Muslim,” the Republican style 3 a.m. attack, and Ferraro). JUST SAY NO TO A TICKET THAT HAS HILLARY CLINTON’S NAME ON IT. If we cannot get Obama, then we must take Nader. These are the only progressives on the table.
As for the more than 25% of Clinton supporters who would elect McCain as their second choice (since it is becoming clear that they are on the same team), rather than Obama, you may get your second choice just by electing Hillary Clinton.

Barack Obama has served ELEVEN years as an elected official. Hillary Clinton has served SEVEN.
Also, I would like to suggest to feminists that it makes little sense for a woman to run on the accomplishments of her husband. Isn’t this against the tenets of feminism–be your own woman, independence, etc?!
And should a woman do so, shouldn;t she then also take credit for the mistakes of her husband–NAFTA and the (anti-gay) Defense of Marriage Act, for example?

Barack and Michelle are my neighbors. They’re the nice couple with the cute kids. Our neighborhood has gotten together, voted, and raised the money to send the Obamas to Washington. Barack and Michelle know us. They know what we need. They’re going to fix things the way we’d like to see them fixed.
When I saw the photo of Barack writing his Chicago speech and Michelle leaning over his shoulders, embracing him, and saying, “I love you. You’re great,” I beamed with pride. You go, girl, I thought. Her husband’s response — a shy smile — made me long to hug them like a couple of Teddy bears.
I want these two people in the White House. I want to see pictures of their darling girls running, playing tag, and squealing as their laughter echoes through the long hallways. I want to go to bed at night in my home, imagining them in their new home, holding hands and whispering pillow talk about how things are going. “What do you think, honey?” I envision them saying. “Does this government engine need an overhaul or an oil-change? Might need a new transmission.”
I watched Michelle speak at the UC Davis rally. She was preceded by
Caroline Kennedy, Oprah, and Maria Shriver. Oprah delivered that great line, paraphrased, I’m not voting for him because he’s black. I’m voting for him because he’s brilliant. All those b’s, alliteration. Barack, because, black, brilliant. The writer in me loved that line.
Kennedy talked about having a president who would inspire people to give service. Her father had called upon the country to transcend the little self and work together for the greater good. Barack would do likewise. She spoke of the “moment” we were having — our “moment” with Barack’s candidacy.
Then Michelle came out. She stumbled up the steps while trying to steer blind Stevie Wonder onto the stage. They fell in a heap on top of each other. A bit of a clutzy moment. I could relate.
The Obama campaign calls Michelle “The Closer.” She lines up all the
logical points for why her husband would make the best president. They are precise, intelligent conclusions and evidence of what a good attorney she must be.
She adds the emotions by spelling out how the detractors attempt to destroy her husband: He’s not white enough. He’s not black enough. He’s too young and inexperienced. She sets up their snide comments like bowling pins and knocks them down one-by-one with counter arguments.
She adds, “He’s cute. I like him.” I think, She’s cute. I like her.
I consider what it would be like to have someone with Michelle’s wit, and heart, and values as First Lady. I marvel at the healing that could happen when youngsters and people of color see someone, who looks and talks like them, go to Washington and represent us all to the world. I think about the perspective a man could bring to the table when he has spent years living outside of America and got it firsthand how we come across to other countries and cultures.
On the other hand, Hillary and Bill are the classmates with whom I went to college. They’re bright, dedicated, charming, and used to getting their way. First Bill, then Hillary ran for student council president while we went to school there. They promised to upgrade the cafeteria food and put plush lounging recliners in the student union.
I voted for them back then. I didn’t really care how they were going to make better food choices and easy chairs available. I was just glad that they were going to take good care of me.
I remember Hillary and Bill as being serious, studious, and focused. They had an organization that could (and did) poster every tree trunk and telephone poll on campus. After they won — of course, they won – their supporters bought and assembled chairs from Sears, not the comfortable recliners they had promised. But they were chairs. And they were new. So I quit my complaining and sat in them.
Likewise, the cafeteria food did improve, if you like pizza and French fries instead of the bland canned vegetables we used to get. We all grew fatter with the higher calories, but Bill and Hillary did make things change, as promised.
I recall Hillary and Bill keeping to themselves on campus. They only
partied with their powerful friends. I never got to know them well. In contrast Barack and Michelle invite neighbors over to kick back, watch the Superbowl, and speculate about who’s most likely to win.
I like Barack and Michelle, not because Oprah and Caroline and Maria do. I like them because they’re people who live next door to me. They drink the same water I do. They send their kids to the school where my children attend. They’re as cold or as hot or as concerned about finances as I am. I’m glad the neighborhood is sending the Obamas to Washington, but our block parties just won’t be the same without them.
