As Chicago Bids for Games, Obama Ducks Olympics Criticism
ABC News’ Sunlen Miller Reports: Barack Obama doesn’t seem to want to talk about the Olympics or Senator Clinton’s call for a boycott of the opening ceremonies on August 8, 2008.
At a town hall in Malvern, Pennsylvania, Obama, D-Ill., was asked about U.S. policy toward Tibet and Darfur, especially in light of the forthcoming Olympics in Beijing this summer.
Obama has not followed Clinton’s lead in calling for an opening ceremony boycott to protest China’s human rights abuses in Tibet and Darfur.
"It’s very hard to tell your banker that he’s wrong," Obama said, after talking about the need to restore America’s stance in the world, "And if we are running huge deficits and big national debts and we’re borrowing money constantly from China, that gives us less leverage. It give us less leverage to talk about human rights, it also is giving us less leverage to talk about the uneven trading relationship that we have with China."
Obama never once mentioned the Olympic Games in his response.
He did say the United States has not been "consistent enough and tough enough" toward "pushing (China) to deal with Tibet properly."
In a paper statement released on Monday, Obama said there "should be consequences" if the Chinese government does not take immediate steps to respect the human rights of the Tibetan people.
In reference to Sudan, Obama sounded a similar note, asserting, "We have to take a stronger stance. We have to take a stronger stance and it’s got to be more consistent over time."
The junior Senator from Illinois has a particularly tricky balancing act when it comes to the subject of the Olympics: Chicago is vying to host the 2016 games and one of Obama’s top campaign advisors and close friends, Valerie Jarrett, is the vice chair of Chicago’s bid committee.

The closer we get to the election, the more he sounds like an animatron. Ask him a question, the calculations start, and out pops a non-offensive, non-controversial message that cannot be used against him… the supposed passion to lead seems to have been replaced by pure politics. Giapetto made Pinocchio… Axelrod has Obama.

Since Hillary’s call to boycott the Olympic ceremonies Gordon Brown of the UK will be boycotting, the EU is now considering a boycott of the opening ceremonies, and even George Bush is now considering a boycott of the opening ceremonies. Obama? Well, if you need an example of how Obama would lead the world you just got yourself one. He failed the test as we all said he would over and over again.

That’s politics… You gotta know when to hold em and know when to fold em… That’s the way the game is played. So what else is new?
It does show that he doens’t need to “follow” Clinton. She just does whatever is popular – that didn’t take leadership – it’s a no brainer.

Obama is being wisely cautious. Because of the U.S.’s fiscal irresponsibility we have chosen to borrow money from one of the most egregious violators of human rights on the face of the planet and if we’re not careful they will call in their markers. If that happens, we’re screwed. It’s real easy to flag wave and spout slogans but this country is not in a good position to offend a country that holds us in the palm of its hand financially speaking.

You’re so full of it…Hillary didn’t start calling for a boycott until the protests started making news.
She needed to deflect her string of corrupted bad news (bosnia, Nafta, Penn, etc), so SHE jumped on the wagon of other countries that were already considering a boycott.
Nancy Pelosi demanded Bush boycott the olympics WELL before Hillary did.
GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!!!! You sound so much like the lying Clinton

Unlike the great American he is often compared to (John F. Kennedy showing in his life to be a true Profile in Courage with his devotion to his nation and the public welfare often before his own) Senator Obama is all profile and no courage.
Senator Clinton, and others like her, have shown courage and dedication during their years of service, instead of just relying on 2 or 3 years of service in the community where little was done beyond grooming onceself personally for a career in politics.
As Americans who ask more of their public servants when we seek change, Senator Clinton represents the real change we want to see in our country and the world.
Posted by: Concerned | April 9, 2008, 4:01 pm 4:01 pm
I kind of think Clinton’s call is a bit of a hollow statement anyway. She doesn’t have to do anything to back up her comment, and won’t have to as President, given that one of the US’s closest allies is hosting the 2012 games, but can continue to harrass Bush over it for a while and make herself look like a leader whatever Bush does, be it criticizing or taking credit. So its all a bit of a stunt as an issue. But she also knows its an obvious issue to be raised in the forthcoming debate as well, and knows that Obama is on difficult diplomatic ground on this. So to be honest, from my point of view this seems typical spineless Clinton politics.

China would no sooner “call in their markers” than they would launch a nuclear attack on us. The Chinese may hold a great deal of the US debt, but our relationship is very symbiotic. They would not chance an all-out embargo of Chinese products, as that would cause their economy to crumble. Obama apparently doesn’t understand this, so he obviously thinks we need to cow-tow to them. Failing to stand up to the Chinese government gets you only one thing – more of the same!
Posted by: Bob | April 9, 2008, 4:04 pm 4:04 pm
Senator Clinton made that comment for sheer political gain. No matter the pressure he gets, President Bush will be attending the opening ceremonies to the Olympic games.

This is where the (thick) rubber of the Clintons’ financial entanglements hits the (icy) road of presidential politics. Huffington Post reports that Bill Clinton was paid $800,000 in 2005 by a group “tasked with bringing investment to the country and educating world leaders about the Colombia’s business opportunities.”
The Clinton campaign confirms the former president’s support for the trade deal. “The acknowledgment adds new hurdles to the New York senator’s bid to woo Democratic voters in Pennsylvania and elsewhere who believe free trade agreements have eliminated thousands of U.S. jobs,” the AP’s Charles Babington writes.

Poor Obama, his lack of leadership and judgment are once again exposed. As a resident of the Chicago-area, I hope they lose the bid for the Olympics. If Obama is keeping his mouth shut about the China issue because he’s “concerned” of any appearance of a “conflict of interest”, he needs to be reminded of the reasons for the condemnation of China. Evidently since it doesn’t affect him or his self-serving interests, he’ll continue to be “silent”.

Boycotting the opening ceremony is a very nunanced issue. Clearly the anti Obama people here have about as much nuance and deep thinking ability as Bush/Cheney – but with even less facts to work on.
So by definition all the blather is simply ignorant prejudice.
I see no reason to state a absolute decision of intention to boycott today – that is not to say that it should not happen. Also a proper President (which we do not have) should play this hand very carefully – and certainly not show ones cards during a poker game.
But America has in reality has lost its right to lecture anyone. You need moral authority – so get a grip and start thinking like decent human beings.
People who support Clinton’s stance are refusing to accept the consequences of being citizens of a Country that supports torture, rendition, incarceration without legal representation and illegal invasions – now that is a the definition of arrogance.

Concluding his nine-day trip to China in July 1998, President Clinton called it “a remarkably successful attempt to continue to build our partnership for the future.”
The U.S. president walked a tightrope of diplomacy during the trip, attempting to strengthen political and economic ties with Beijing even as he called attention to perceived shortcomings in the areas of human rights and democratic freedoms.
While some critics are unlikely to be impressed with the visit to China, Clinton’s aides say he was right to go, and they predict the visit will eventually pay huge dividends for both the United States and China.

Are you confused? Obama is running to be president who must address issues of American interest. Obama is not running for mayor of Chicago or for the senate of Illinois either. This is and was the absolutely perfect position for Obama to be in because he could have used this opportunity to say I will stand up for American interests and make the tough decisions despite the Olympic hopes of my neighborhood. And perhaps in spite of, then the whimp thing would disappear overnight. As president you have to be able to make those tough calls. Obama failed.

Wrong! Obama is starting the dialogue that needs to be spoken about our weak standing in the world. He knows it’s going to be hard to accept, but America right now has a credibility problem.
In the content of his statement, he is saying that the problem is bigger than the olympics and that he will address outside of that arena because he believes the athletes should not be overshadowed by a political election.
I think this was a smart way of him handling the issue. Why put the athletes in the middle of politics? That’s respect he’s exercising!

I doubt his response has anything to do with Chicago bidding for the games. And I hope Chicago doesn’t get it, because everywhere the Olympics go they tear apart areas, in this case the South Side, for their stupid games, leaving impoverished people screwed over.
Posted by: TPIP | April 9, 2008, 4:41 pm 4:41 pm
WestCoastMessenger – How is Clinton “standing up” against China? First of all, she suggests that SOMEONE ELSE do something by boycotting the opening ceremonies. There is also the problem that boycotting the Olympics will not help Tibet whatsoever and will probably hurt. Most China and Tibet experts agree that boycotting the Olympics would only result in a Chinese crackdown in Tibet as retribution. So maybe everything YOUR candidate says is not automatically perfect after all?

I am thankful that Obama is showing leadership instead of acting out of rashness like Hilliary Clinton is doing to grandstand and make herself appear to be a leader. She has always lead a sheltered life, and she is simply taking advantage of a connundrum in which she gets to look strong by telling President Bush what to do, and yet avoid taking the repercussions when something goes terribly wrong, i.e., blowback for a stupid decision. That is one of the pay-offs for the grandstander, Clinton. What a weasel. The second is, that it allows her to divert attention from her pack of lies and her bankrupt “vision” for addressing the economic woes and the Iraq war problems, i.e., domestic issues. But then she has never actually taken responsibility for anything before, so why would we expect her to begin doing so now? Instead, she is following the same old-school politics of say anything to make yourself look good, get the votes and leave others holding the back. Sorry loser! Thinking people are not buying it this time.

Clinton was already a trailblazer when it comes to China – she’s been there when it wasn’t popular to give a speech on human rights. This was 13 years ago! She’s following up now with regard to the Olympics. When she’s President, she’ll take care of it. She’s a Methodist – did you know that there are over 30 Methodist churches sponsoring water, schools, farming, communities in war-torn Darfur? What is Obama’s church doing?

You sound like a “typical Obama supporter”. Maybe you can live in your Obama t-shirt once you’ve been kicked out. You can always log on to the Daily Kos and rant at the public library. You can also look up Hillary Clinton’s historical statements against human rights abuses by China. My guess is that Barack Obama came out with a MUCH STRONGER statement than anybody against China while he was an Illinois state legislator.

If someone would just give Obama a button to push on boycotting the opening ceremony of the Olympics, then he could say “I pushed the wrong button” if it turns out he made the wrong decision. Since there is no button, Obama shows his true leadership by avoiding the question altogether. Does that even count as a “present” vote? I think it means he missed the vote and won’t be back to speak with reporters about it.

If he thinks he’s going to take on the special interests, then why the wimpiness towards China, whether we owe them money or not? If he applies the same logic to the special interests, we’ll be in bed with them forever contrary to what his speeches are about. He has had so many opportunities to show through his actions whether he really is capable of standing up for what he says he believes in. Example: says he’s against racism, excuses his Pastor because he’s “like family”, says he’s for human rights, excuses China because we owe them money. Seems he wants to appease everyone and stand for nothing. All the words and money are not enough to persuade many scrutinizing voters like myself. It’s similar to the mindset of the abused person towards their abuser. Somehow it’s their fault so they don’t deserve better. This really worries me as a characteristic in someone who is supposed to be possibly the next President! We need an assertive, confident President who will stand up with all they have on behalf of Americans. I just don’t see it. Am I missing something?

What does this man stand for anyway? Oh yea, change. This guy is so all over the place…maybe that’s why he’s perfect for democrats. He panders and he tells his special groups what they want to hear. How does 55cent tax on the dollar sound? Liberal whites vote for him because he is telling them exactly what they want to hear (and most of the liberal whites vote for him b/c of the shame of slavery…lol). Blacks vote for him b/c there are actually white people voting for this nut!!!

Isn’t it just hilarious how the obamamaniacs continue to blame Hillary Clinton for voting for the war as the deciding vote that put us in Iraq? Just goes to show how really brainwashed the obama followers have become and how uninformed about any of the issues. I would wager that these followers don’t even know what obama is talking about (like the rest of the world) most of the time, but are so blinded by his “light” that if he utters a word, they will die by his sword. Obama has proved many times that he is a cult leader, he has mind control over the weakest of his followers (those that are the least intelligent) and uses them as spokespersons to further his goal of bashing Hillary in every way, yet not speaking a bad word against her. He has his minions in place for that. Remember ” I didn’t say it, so it cannot be me and it cannot be wrong.” Now as the vetting begins, the only way that he comes off as holier than thou, it to have a Hollywood script writer pen another magnificent speech, which when delivered, makes his followers fall to their knees in praise and then go prone because the Golden Tongue has spoken. There will be another enlightening, magnificent speech rather shortly and MSNBC, Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews will again feel those tingling sensations up and down their spine.
The best thing that obama utters when responding to a question or someone requesting a response is “uh, uh, uh”. What a president he will make. LMAO.

And this is the candidate who believes in talking to nations to get them to change their ways? If you can’t “tell your banker he’s wrong”, then how does he plan to counter impact of Chinese manufacturing on US markets, intellectual property violations, environmental/global warming, Taiwan, or human rights issues? … Apparently when he says he’ll talk, it’s only about safe topics.

Do you still remember Chalaby, the Iraqi exile and his followers? How much US suffered from the lies that was created single-handedly by this guy and his organization? China is a victim this time. Tibetan exiles are using the western countries to promote their own agenda.

Hillary jumped on the pelosi bandwagon to get penn off the news.
This is so clintonian say you have no opinion of it hope the media forgets that and play the public for fools. Then take Pelosi’s position and make it like you are the leader on this.
All politicians lie but the Clintons lie so easily and all the time.

I am black, and I have no trouble admitting that the only reason I am voting for Obama is because it’s about time we get a brother in the White House. You whites would do the same thing. If, for two hundred years only black men were president, then all of a sudden you had the opportunity to vote for a white dude, for like, the first time ever, you would be all over that.

So he did what he always does best…not answer the question straight up…He should have said uhm..PRESENT…hahahahaha…This can be the future POTUS. Just like when he was asked “why did he continue to go to this church for 20 years? He has not answered this question and he never will. Hillary Clinton might not be perfect but she is the best candidate we have that can turn this country around.

Obama really shows his selfishness and ‘class’ by bending over to China who are bullying the poor Tibetians with inhumane treatment. Whenever ‘Mr to-be President Obama’ is conflicted with decision his decision is VERY CLEAR – NO DECISION with PRSENT vote. What a GOOD judgement. We can not afford such a spineless ‘non leader’ who only cares about his ‘vote’ and his own future.

I don’t want a President making irrational decisions for the sake of just having a position – they need to take everything into consideration.

I am a McCain supporter, but the fact that Obama did not give a KNEE-JERK reaction that we have become so accustomed to, is a testament to his thoughtfulness and measured response to events…. I think that is the change that we may need in politics… Unfortunately, Hillary quickly jumped and reacted without thinking about the awkward unfortunate position that we have gotten ourselves into with China…. A knee-jerk reaction is not needed by our future-President on the world stage. Its a prelude to what type of Presidency we can expect from that cadidate….. I am truly looking forward to a general election between McCain vs Obama…. Both men offer new options and directions… McCain, a new kind of Republican and Obama, a new kind of Democrat…. That is the choice Americans should decide upon in November.

Yes, pragmatism is the haulmark of Obama policy and is the only way to govern in the middle and govern successfully. Pragmatism, not radicalism, brings peace and prosperity.
We have plenty of experience of Bush’s “my way or high way” politics. It gave us failed Iraq policy, failed economy, and enormous debt.

As a Canadian I have a different perspective on US politics. Don’t you realized that the world is laughing at the moronic choices you make for your leaders. After all, you voted Bush in (twice). Now you’re considering electing some ancient guy who wants to declare war on the world and a women who can’t remember if she dragged her teanage daughter into the line of sniper fire or not. You guys get what you deserve. You’re afraid to elect Obama because he doesn’t fit the cookie cutter mold you have established for your leaders.

He is actually thinking about making decisions and not just blaring out an opinion that will suck up to people that don’t think about the consequences like voting for the war. If anyone believes that he does not care about human rights you are crazy. Yes, it would be much easier to just have the same, save opinion as Clinton has, but like I said….that would be easy.

Hillary is a hypocrite, she is using this opportunity just for political gain, just like she used Bosnia. Obama is not going to take a serious situation like this and make a mockery of it like Hillary has!! Bush has been communicating with China, and it is through these communications that things with China will change, that they will improve their human rights behaviour, and Obama knows that as well. By locking off China, and ending all possibility of communication is not going to get things changed, and most people know that. Hillary is into grandstanding, and she knows full well that this grandstanding is not going to solve a thing.

To TPIP – Bigger Issues? Such as more advise from the Reverend Wright? Or more endorsers such as the Weather Underground? Or why Michelle obama’s campaign stated they need more whites in background for her speech? Or how to sluff of any more exposure to Tony Rezko? I guess from obama’s perspective these are bigger issues than standing up for the United States of America.
To rose: Hand that feeds us? G.W. Bush was the person that borrowed from China to finance the war and we, the taxpayers will pay for it. Bite the hand that feeds us? You’ve got to be kidding – obama can’t even bite the hand of the white hating groups that keep popping up as his supporters and followers. Obama had an opportunity to stand up and say that he would support the United States of America against anyone, no matter it be China or Russia or North Korea. A man of courage would do that in an instant. Any man in military uniform right now in Iraq would say that and mean it.
Obama is a wuzz and his true agenda is now forthcoming and I say good – at last the world will see what the media and Teddy Kennedy and John Kerry have created with the help of Oprah with her billions and the Reverend Wright with this G.D. American sermons. What other nation in this world will have any respect for us when a president will back down to anyone at anytime. The Muslims did say they will get the USA from within and it looks like the chose obama.

Lauren, can you please explain your comments. Seem’s to me that you are not really versed on what you are talking about. Are you one of those blind followers of Sen Obama or you fantasize him to be a man/leader he is not.
Looks like you are just parroting the liberal media.

Only a Yahoo would believe that a boycott of the games would have any effect. Nothing happened as a result of US Russian Games boycott.
The largely symbolic gesture of Boycotting the opening ceremonies, would again leave the US out there isolated, and on our own, with little leverage to accomplish anything

Obamaalltheway,
I love it. Obama is standing back and showing judgement again? What kind of judgement are you talking about? The kind of judgement where he waited twenty years to speak out about Reverend Wright?

jock59801 —– the best time to make a comment is when it matters most. This is the best time to talk against human rights abuses when the world is watching. Natural leaders know when to speak out based on their beliefs not do grandstanding with speeches written by their speechwriters.

Clinton is doing everything to stay in the news including dictating to George Bush! I haven’t heard Mclain demanding George Bush not to attend the opening Ceremonies of the Olympics. Bush and the White House do not need to be dictated to and will reach the appropriate decision. Is anybody noticing how the Clintons are playing a two-faced game, one supportng attendance at the Olympics the other not, one supporting the Columbia Trade Agreement and the other not. They are trying to confuse America – You can’t have it both ways. They are tryng to play it safe and it is rediculous.

Thinking – Get with the news. Gordon Brown of the UK is boycotting the opening ceremonies since Clinton made the call. The EU is NOW considering boycotting the opening ceremonies since Clinton made the call, and even George Bush is NOW considering boycotting since Clinton made the call. So who in the world is following Obama? Chevez? Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? Assad of Syria? Dear Leader of North Korea? Gaddaffi? Yep. Obama buddies every one.

JimT you are absolutely right. What should have been one of the easiest wins in history, the dems have found a way to lose the election. I want Biden back, I want Edwards back, Richardson or Dodd…….someone who stood a chance of winning this thing. Now we have a divided party with our leaders, Dean and Pelosi, doing all they can to widen that divide. Wonder if McCain has figured out what he is wearing to his inauguration.

Once the “boycott” is over, we’ll all be back to purchasing more stuff from China and keep this snowball going and going and going.

Well what exactly is his tougher stance?
Does he mean like the tougher stance Jimmy Carter is taking with Hamas today?
Obama has no tougher stance. He want to meet with terrorists and rogue leaders and doesn’t have any tougher stance for even something as symbolic and easy as boycotting an openning ceremony.

If u think it is dirty now, wait until the Republican Attack Machine gets started…
***Back when EVERYONE was watching the S Carolina debate to find out if Sen. Obama was real change from the politics as usual…
Obama on his first big money supporter, Tony Rezco, “I only worked for five hours for him as a client as a junior lawyer.” (NO BIG DEAL) and then later, “He helped my buy my house and saved me $300,000 and gave 250k to my campaign” and then, “he never asked me for anything.”
What’s up with that ??? Is he lying or naïve?
Plus
His spiritual mentor for 20 years Pastor Wright said America is responsible for 9/11 and “god d@#$ America”, wouldn’t most Americans stand up and walk out….
How can a US Senator Take that…
Obama said, “I was never there in the pews”, and then later “I was there” …
***the Republicans are going to dismantle Sen. Obama …if he wins the Nomination.
a disputed meeting earlier this year between Obama’s senior economic adviser Austan Goolsbee and Canadian diplomats over NAFTA.
In that meeting, which the Obama campaign initially denied ever took place, Goolsbee reportedly told the Canadians that Obama’s tough rhetoric on NAFTA was mere political posturing. After Canadian officials leaked a key memo that called into question the Obama campaign’s repeated denials, the campaign acknowledged the meeting but denied Goolsbee ever said any such thing.
“Again, this story is not true. There was no one at any level of our campaign, at any point, anywhere, who said or otherwise implied Obama was backing away from his consistent position on trade.” Obama Spokesperson Burton said.

Obama may be the one politician who actually tries to understand the other country’s culture before taking a position. Iraq is not South Korea (Christian troops in a Muslem country will NEVER work). China has to save face (something most Americans will never understand) so you find ways to presure them that won’t make them dig in their heals and take back their money. Hillary can say what American’s want to hear, but think about how cynical her view of voters can be when she will do anything to win now and hopes that the voters will forgive and forget later.

Another ABC story:
The tapes show Clinton in the role of a loyal company woman. “I’m always proud of Wal-Mart and what we do and the way we do it better than anybody else,” she said at a June 1990 stockholders meeting.
Clinton would not agree to be interviewed on the subject but now says she no longer shares Wal-Mart’s values and believes unions “have been essential to our nation’s success.”

Well, actually, I think it is funny that she opposes Bill on the Colombia thing, since everybody has been saying Bill would be running things. Then yall bash her for that.
Now as to Obama standing up for anything, I got a quote for you from a blogger on muslimsforobama08 posted by ShaikhfromSanJose”another reason I don’t like Obama is because he is doing his best to prove he is not muslim.” And on the website Obama himself said “I wasn’t raised in a religious household, my mother was detatched from religion.” But on a Christian website with the interviewer he said ” my mother was a Christian from Kansas. I have always been a Christian.” I guess it depends on who your audience is.That last quote was from Moriel Ministries. Can you really trust this guy? Nah.

Regarding Obama’s comments – he is absolutely right. So what if the U.S. Boycotts the Olympics – we still owe them trillions of dollars. Maybe if we would move some of our factories back over seas and invest in our own country – maybe that might send a message to China!

I just think if we as a country are going to take a “stand”, we should at least make a bigger effort then simply boycotting a sporting event (which ironicly is supposed to bring countries together by way of appreciation of the athletics, if only for short while). And to me the only time when I ever see or hear of action is when it effects the wallet!

If you are trying desperately to raise money to pay off your debts before the campaign collapses… go ahead and grandstand the Olympic issue like Hillary Clinton.
If you are already beginning to think, act and communicate like our chief executive, because you may soon be representing the United States… you would position the Olympic question exactly the way Barack Obama is handling it.

I’m really not even sure where this vehemence back and forth between Clinton and Obama supporters even comes from. They actually are very similar in so many ways. Both brilliant, knowledgable and compassionate. Very similar voting records and even fairly similar types of experiences. I would be happy to have either one of them as President, and polls consistently show that most Democrats feel the same way.

President of US should give all possibilities to American People to express protest.
Any President’s political action on international level should be motivated with the best political interest of USA, taking into account no only HUGE population of China and HUGE American debts, but also nuclear weapon, that China holds.
The action should not be pushed to come by Dems.
With all my respect to Dem party, and personally Barack Obama, political figures should stay apart in this case.

As President I would love to pull our troops out of Iraq, but Saudia Arabia and other mideast countries are helping to fund our way out of the banking crisis we’re in. They fear a civil war if we leave and since we need their financing we may have to stay for a bit longer than I expected.

Remember the summer Olympics in Berlin?=====================
“The United States considered boycotting the Olympic games, since participating in the festivity might be considered as support for the Nazi Germany regime and its Anti-Semitic policies. However, others argued that the Olympic Games should not be a reflection of political views but strictly a contest of the greatest athletes…………………from Wikipedia
And we know that the Jews were later systematically exterminated during the Third Reich.
This time, something very similar is happening. The human rights of Tibet is being violated by the most powerful country in Asia. The question is how should our leaders react to this??? It is sad that just because of the bloggers here support Sen Obama and the Sen can hardly make a decision on how to react to the issue, they give the same excuse that most of the bloggers in this forum are giving…. that the Olympics are about the athletes …….
Unless we and our leaders(or those who profess to be leaders) show China that we are not pleased with what they are doing to Tibet the situation will only grow worse.

It doesn’t really matter the motiviation, though. I will defend either candidate against slander.

In case none of you was alive in the ’80s, boycotts of Olympics don’t work. The US boycotted the Moscow Olympics of 1980, and the Soviets boycotted the LA Olympics in 1984. What happened as a result? Absolutely nothing.
This is a serious non-issue.

politicsIsdirty – Are you implying that boycotting the Berlin games would have helped the Jews in any way? Boycotting the Beijing games will not help the Tibetans either. In fact, I have heard a couple of different Tibet experts agree that it would be a disaster for the Tibetans – prompting China to just crack down all the more visciously.

Clinton wasn’t asking that we ban the OLYMPICS; She was asking that the United States not be represented at the opening ceremonies to show our distaste for China’s actions in Tibet.
And other heads of state are backing her suggestion…… because they respect her even though she is just a senator!
Barry has chosen, once again, to siton his hands until he can figure out which way the political wind is blowing….

I appreciate your comments jock59801.
As a leader of the Free World, you have to send a message to China that you are not pleased with what is happening in Tibet. Boycotting the Opening Ceremony or the Olympics itself will make the world more aware of the situation in Tibet and galvanize all freedom loving countries of the world to speak out against what China is doing.

jock59801 – I’m not sure you are aware of Barack’s ties to Kenyan radical presidential hopeful Raila Odinga, who identified himself as Barack’s cousin on his father’s side and for whom Barack campaigned in Kenya after he visited Barack in the United States.
Pamela Geller, Israel National News.com, January 9, 2008: “The recent revelations of [Barack] Obama’s ties to Raila Odinga in Kenya are disconcerting… because Odinga is behind the terrible violence in his country. It was he who instigated bloody riots and killing after he lost the election. Obama’s bias for his fellow Luo was so blatant that a Kenyan government spokesman denounced Obama during his visit as Raila’s ‘stooge.’ And while there are few angels in Kenya, Odinga is the source of great unrest and turmoil; and the [Memorandum of Understanding] he signed with the Muslim Council to institute sharia [Islamic law] is a foreshadowing of a dark fate for Kenya.”

politicsIsdirty – It is a little more complicated than that. The Chinese leadership is stubborn, petulant, and paranoid, and the worst thing you can do is back them into a corner. I’m not sure there is anything we can do about Tibet, frankly, but if there is it would be behind the scenes. Trying to embarass China in public just makes them crack down all the harder.

The is a political problem. Boycotting this olympics is a stupid suggestion and most polls are showing by at least a 60 percent margin that everyone else agrees. If you really want to do something STOP BUYING THINGS MADE IN CHINA!! DUH!! But I’ll bet everyone of you will go out some time this week and buy something made in China and won’t think twice about.

Dogsoldier – We can’t stop the killing in Darfur by “speaking up.” We have already tried that. We can only stop the killing in Darfur by actually STOPPING the killing in Darfur, which I am all for. Why did we claim we were going into Iraq for “humanitarian” reasons, while ignoring the much worse genocide in Darfur?
Of course, the military option is not going to work in Tibet, which is one reason I am afraid there is not much we can do about it.

Berlin was named host of the OLympic games in 1931… four years before the bloody reign of Hitler.
Stories of his atrocities to the Jews was just beginning to trickle out and were so outrageous, it took a while before the truth became believable… possibly, too late.
But had we KNOWN what we’ve learned since about the 1936 Berlin Games, I believe we WOULD have stepped down and, possibly, even eliminated ourselves from the games.
So yes, I thnk Hillary was right to do what she did!

Hillary Clinton can turn this country around. I am one of those people that have lost a job and soon will loose a home. My future and my childrens future depends on my democratic parties nominee. I have voted democratic all of my adult life. If Barack Obama is the nominee I will put mine and my childrens future in front of the party. I will vote John Mccain in November. Anyone who has a grain of knowledge about Chinese culture and Chinese politics knows that you do not disparage or rebuke the Chinese publicly. To do so does not allow the Chinese to save face, which is paramount in the culture (http://www.chinese-forums.com/archive/index.php/t-2509.html).
Obama understands this infinitely better than the Clown in Chief we have now and is exercising excellent judgment in not jumping on the band wagon, which is the obvious and easy thing to do from the western perspective. And it would be precisely the wrong thing. You notice how the Chinese stance gets more firmly entrenched the more flack they get? This is not a coincidence. Now they are taking about “severely dealing with demonstrators” in Tibet (as though they have not already) and claiming the Dalai Lama is a terrorist leader. This seems foolish to those in the US, but it is the Chinese perspective that dictates this response and it will only get worse if we try to force their hand.
Not only that, but they are in fact lending us huge some of money to finance the war in Iraq, and hold a very favorable position with the US in trade as well. All of this together means it is the wise and prudent thing to go easy on the Chinese publicly, and bring some heat in private.
Of course, this requires diplomacy; something the current administration has none of, and Clinton only in short supply. She doesn’t get it.

Here is Obama’s statement on the Olumpics for those of us not yet aware -
Here is Obama’s full statement:
“If the Chinese do not take steps to help stop the genocide in Darfur and to respect the dignity, security, and human rights of the Tibetan people, then the President should boycott the opening ceremonies. As I have communicated in public and to the President, it is past time for China to respect the human rights of the Tibetan people, to allow foreign journalists and diplomats access to the region, and to engage the Dalai Lama in meaningful talks about the future of Tibet. I am also deeply concerned about China’s failure to support efforts to halt the genocide in Darfur. Regarding the Beijing Olympics this summer, a boycott of the opening ceremonies should be firmly on the table, but this decision should be made closer to the Games.”
This is a voice of reasoning…

Regarding the Beijing Olympics this summer, a boycott of the opening ceremonies should be firmly on the table, but this decision should be made closer to the Games.”
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/04/obama-says-bush.html
This is a voice of reasoning not necessarily because Chicago is vying to host the olympics in 2016, but because it’s a more matured approach to looking at things.

Thank Goodness we have the electorial college. For the first time, I realize we can not count on the popular vote because there are too many uneducated voters that are caught up in the “Movie Star” candidate.

Ton – Gordon Brown of the UK is already Boycotting the opening ceremonies as Clinton asked. The EU is considering boycotting the opening ceremonies as of today. Even George Bush is now considering a boycott of the opening ceremonies. Once again Obama is so far behind events as they happen he no longer matters. Irrelevant! A non factor. A follower at best.

So Dogsoldier
Who will you vote for if Hillary looses?
Posted by: Aston | April 9, 2008, 8:30 pm 8:30 pm
Aston – H-h-m-m, what’s best for America? McCain or that fellow with the jelly spine? E-e-r-r, what’s best for the democratic party who can’t even run their own primary? Wow. That’s a hard one. McCain or that fellow with a jelly spine? You know, it’s so hard to make up my mind. Do you have any kookaid? That could help.

@Dogsoldier -
I understand your point of view. But this is what I mean, when I talk about a “voice of reasoning”. Remember, Obama is not recommending a **bycott**, like Clinton and some others, he is actually suggesting for us to think ahead as we make decisions. He is saying – Hey… we are someday going to be vying for this thing, so we should tackle it carefully, in a way that will get the chinese to recognize free press, human rights, etc, but at the same not blow our changes of hosting the world in 2016.
Just for the records, last week, Obama said, “I’m hesitant to make the Olympics a site of political protest because I think it’s partly about bringing the world together” and Monday in a statement did not address the proposal to boycott the opening ceremony. If the Chinese government did not work “toward meaningful autonomy for Tibet,” Obama said, “there should be consequences.”
Chicago 2016 spokesman Patrick Sandusky said, “If we are fortunate enough to be chosen as a candidate city, we would be honored to attend the Beijing Games.”
Ed Hula, who edits around therings.com, which covers the Olympics’ business side, said a U.S. boycott “would kill the bid” for Chicago.
As the Olympic torch heads for San Francisco, officials are ready for more protests in the lone American stop for the torch. “The situation in San Francisco is also a worry” for the United States Olympic Committee, added Hula.
European leaders are considering a boycott of the opening ceremony. The Bush White House is not.
So you can see some level headedness and calm reasoning and this I think is what is expected of a leader -
Posted by: Ton | April 9, 2008, 8:38 pm 8:38 pm
Ton – Quid pro quo is no way for a world leader to make a decision when human rights are at the center of the deal for getting the Olympics. That’s the very essence of leadership itself. At what price do you sell out by silence? If I know I can somehow buy silence then all we’re really discussing is your price. Suppose King had though that way. Or Gandhi? Or Rabin of Israel of his peace deal with Arabs. And yes, King’s, Rabin’s, and Sadat’s and Gandhi’s efforts cost them their very lives. But I remember them and I remember their sacrifice and I remember the cost of it all and that’s why I say now and will continue to say we whose lives are not on the line have to stand for something of value like these great human beings in their time. I can ask that of myself at least. Nothing less.

Obama needs to stop worry about West African Forest Negroes. Blacks in america got real problems here. and i refuse to capitalize america, because yes america is still run by racists whites. white gave black ppl AIDs. well, the jokes on you. Black ppl will keep on having sex with white woman and men until all of you have it too. With more blacks in media and manipulation, whites are no longer afraid of whites (and dont see as murders, dirty or rapists anymore), and we will take full advantage. our time has come, its our time now. move over. 1 p.s. get ready for real equality. payback is a b***. ghostface killas.

@Dogsoldier
Good point Dogsoldier. I changed my screen name from Ton to Kanobi11, ‘cos someone else is using the screen name Ton.
Sure you are right Dogsoldier, but this is probably the first time(**not quite sure about that**) the Tibertians are taking their case to the international floor in such an agressive manner. I think, the logical approach will be to reach a reasonable deal w/ the Chinese and use boycott, as a hammer if that is not possible. I am quite sure, things would have changed, if the Tibertians have been pushing this for a long time and China may not have gotten the bid to host the Olympics.
BTW: Dogsoldier, Gordon Brown, will not attend the opening, but will attend the closing, so he is not boycotting it totally, but yes it sends a message to the Chinese and that in my opinion is a more structured, methodological way of approaching issues of this sort.

kanobi11 – I noticed someone used your name and refrained from commenting.

Now how can one call Hillary a leader? When all she is doing is listening to protesters and blindly following their lead….Obama on the other hand has the backbone to make a statement about China and not just join the crowd.

I agree Obama is a follower not a leader. He is a coward that is so passive that it is scary to even imagine him running this country. Bush should never been given the chance and neither should be given to Obama. Senator Obama needs to stop deceiving the voters by giving full stand on issues important to the USA. He needs to stop flip flopping too.

Similar to his relationship to rev wright can obama clearly explain his relationship to odinga and what they discussed in his last visit to kenya.Kibaki is wrong but so is Odinga who clearly feels it is his and the luo time to rule kenya looking at the walkout that occured yesterday,Untill obama clarifies what occured in his last visit to kenya i do not think their will be a solution in kenya as odinga will stall to see if obama gets elected in november

To jYAjAY and anyone else who is confused about what Senator Clinton stated: she is advocating a boycott of the opening ceremony, not a boycott of the Olympic games. This does not impact the athletes one iota. Yet another Obama supporter who is too busy drinking the Kool-Aid to actually understand the facts.

This is NOT an issue about race so Obama isn’t taking a side. He usually votes that way on the floor too. Hillary has a point to just boycott the opening ceremony NOT the entire Olympics.
Posted by: Darla | April 10, 2008, 2:17 am 2:17 am
The Olympic Games attendance is not and has never been a campaign issue. It is a matter of choice if any of the candidates want to voice an opinion. McClain is noted for giving an opinion either. Hillary is jumping on all the news ban wagons she can relevant or not to try to make some point against Obama.
Posted by: Jerry | April 10, 2008, 3:12 am 3:12 am
I see no connection with Chicago wanting to bid for the elections, and Obama remaining silent because of it. What has he to gain? Nothing. I think he stated the main point that he opposes what is happening in Tibet. After all it is not a matter whether he is going or not. This is a question that only Bush should answer. But, you know Hillary trying to look impressive by taking a jab at Bush.

She just said that to win favor with Pelosi who said it weeks ago – you know suck up for the delegate count!!Get it.

The great communicator R. Regan said , when black medal winners gave a closed fist salute, the Olympics are no place for politics. Yet he lead a U.S. boycott of the Olympics. Yes America this is not the first time America has played politics with the Olympics. Do not be hypocritical in your support or protest.
Posted by: riddelup | April 10, 2008, 7:18 am 7:18 am
China is good enough to borrow from, but bad enough to boycott on human rights?
What hypocrites you are?
It’s like your relationship with your parents. You want to criticize the way they raised you and still borrow money from them. Is this the American way?
Posted by: TD | April 10, 2008, 10:06 am 10:06 am
Obama is going to watch it on television, like the rest of us. Basically, Obama is one of us, not one of them…

Dogsoldier~ You are truly confused if you think those are the thoughts of Confucius. This is the current reality in China, to this very day. The forum and Wiki entry I reference are current thinking on a complex set of social values. We don’t expect every red-blooded, narrow-minded American to understand this culture; it is what it is.
But continue on in your own dream reality…

Update: Obama did finally follow Hillary’s lead on this. (A MSM headline actually said so!)
He was against it before Hillary was for it.
And he stole her line about “not telling your banker he’s wrong” and concern about borrowing Chinese money to buy Middle Eastern oil.
Posted by: 1950democrat | April 10, 2008, 1:22 pm 1:22 pm
China is our banker but Human Rights should trump money always. Although we are in or headed for a recession Tibet and Darfur are fighting for basic rights and a peaceful living. We are apparently in Iraq for the same reason but using violence and risk our troops lives…so Bush says. We can deal with these two countries in a peaceful manner by protesting a letting China know that what they are doing is not cool. Also if China bankrupts us by calling us on our debt…it would not help their economy. Their currency is highly undervalued and they are struggling to balance inflation.
Posted by: Mo-Jo | April 10, 2008, 5:25 pm 5:25 pm
Regarding this Barack statement:
“It’s very hard to tell your banker that he’s wrong,” “And if we are running huge deficits and big national debts and we’re borrowing money constantly from China, that gives us less leverage. It give us less leverage to talk about human rights, it also is giving us less leverage to talk about the uneven trading relationship that we have with China.”
Wrong is wrong, Mr Obama; and though your statements may be correct, they also reflect a position of weakness. The same theory could hold true of the people who fund you and support your campaign. Are you going to back the bank and highest bidder, or stand up for Democracy and the right to be free?

Obama is wishy-washy and tries to be all things to all people all of the time. This is definitely another “present” vote. Please God, let Clinton win the Democratic nomination!!!
