Bill on Hillary’s Debate Performance: ‘I Thought She Was Great’
ABC News’ Sarah Amos Reports: Former President Bill Clinton was in high spirits this morning as he took to the stage in Erie, Pennsylvania, eager to talk about what he thought of his wife’s performance at ABC News’ Democratic debate last night in Philadelphia.
“So, I want to begin by saying, I don’t know if you saw that debate last night, but I did, and I thought she was great. She was great because she showed the strength and leadership and knowledge of the issues that is very important to the next president, and and she didn’t hedge, beat around the bush on tough questions like Iran, she told us what she was gonna do on Health care, she told us what she was gonna do on jobs. That’s what you want in a president. Someone who is leading for you,” Clinton told the crowd on the campus of Erie University of Pennsylvania.
Clinton went on to sprinkle debate references throughout his 45 minute speech, at one point saying he thought her answer on Iran was excellent as well. Joining the former president on the stump today is a longtime friend and Hillary Clinton supporter, Ted Danson. Danson’s glowing description of Hillary during his introduction prompted Clinton to remind the crowd that the Hillary he knows is not the one he says has been created by the media and her opponent.
“I couldn’t help thinking – I didn’t mean to start with this but I think I will. You heard what he said about Hillary? That’s what the people who know her think. That is very different than the image that they have tried to create for her, isn’t it, in the media, and out of the other campaign, who are always nagging, nagging, nagging. You heard it for 15 months, you know? How come no one who knows her believes that?" Clinton asked the crowd, explaining that the people who really know her realize she is in it for the people.
Clinton is keeping a busy schedule today with 6 stops in some of the more rural and remote parts of Pennsylvania, including Warren and Lock Haven.

There Bill goes lying again. The onlyl reason Hillary did remotely decent is because she was given a pass by the moderaters. Even then she couldn’t land a knock out blow. Obama tried to change the subject many times to the real issues in America, but she kept constantly bringing up negatives. It was really very sad.
Posted by: Tiffany | April 17, 2008, 1:34 pm 1:34 pm
The idea that Obama shouldn’t have to answer for all this is ridiculous. If this had been addressed long ago like it should have been, then Obama wouldn’t be facing this now. Where would we be now if only the media had been doing their job and being objective and scrutinizing the man who wants to be our President for goodness sakes.
What more is out there? What else got scrubbed? He is scary.
His Ayers answer…my god. I don’t care if he bombed buildings, government or otherwise, 20 years before I was born. If I am wanting to be President (and by the way, If I’m not wanting to be President either) I avoid him, his neighbor, his kindergarten teacher and his dog’s puppies like they were the plague.
NOT because I’m running for President but because what he did is heinous and against the land I love.
I don’t care if he wasn’t punished legally, it doesn’t make him not guilty, especially when he admits it, boasts about it and says they didn’t do enough and he regrets that.
Just think…Ayers is only ONE issue that Obama needs to answer for.
Also, as long as the slamming is of Clinton, it’s ok right? If it had been, all you people all over the Internet would be celebrating, instead of whining.
Come back and vote when you grow up.

I think that Obama did a fantastic job considering that the moderators spent the first 45 minutes before they even asked him any policy questions. They basically attacked him the entire night, and then they got the nerve to say that he was defensive. Of course he was. They asked Hillary one question regarding Bosnia, and then moved on to another attack on Obama without even getting into the fact that she lied. They never brought up the NAFTA issue and the fact that her husband accepted $800,000.00 from a trade deal with the Columbians that she states she’s against. That’s like my wife saying she’s anti-police, and then me excepting a big payday to pad “our” bank account. They never brought up the fact that her main advisor (Penn) was making a deal with those same Columbians that paid her husband. On the flip side they managed to bring up and hammer the four most negative stories about Obama that has been looped over and over for the past 6 wks. All of the old issues were long put to rest including the Wright thing. This whole thing was set up to keep Obama from talking about the issues and to try and make it a cat fight between the two. What about the $4.00 gas prices, or the rising crime, or the 3rd tour that most servicemen are going thru, or the economy, or the rising cost of college, or the housing market, or the lack of healthcare for the mentally ill. I was disappointed that we’re on the edge of history and this debate was the worst one-sided moderated (attack) debate that I’ve ever seen. It was refreshing to hear Hillary finally admit that Obama can beat McCain. God is good and faithful…

1 tabloid question each candidate from viewers ( sniper fire & flag pin)
3 tabloid questions against Obama (wrihgt + willie? + bitter-gate). 1 came from Sean Hennety (agruabley a neo-con). NONE against Hillary.
And the only audience responses shown (5 times) were from Chelsea sandwiched beteen two Hillary superDel.

Tom Coburn is the latest to get thrown under the bus by Obama.
Tom Coburn who said IF abortion became illegal, then the death penalty could perhaps be used for those abortionists.
And THAT is what Barack compares to a guy who bombed buildings and now says he didn’t do enough????
WOW. And they’re a lot friendlier than Barack admits. He had a strategy meeting at his house.

I just want to say as a lifetime Democrate for 49 years, I have never been so embarrassed to be a Democrate till now. Last nights debate was a total joke. Hillary, ABC, Nutter and Rendell did a good job of setting Senator Obama up. It appeared to me that the debate was not about real issues but instead, an agenda for Hillary’s benefit. It was obvious that she knew what the questions were going to be and that it was decided to ask her about Bosnia once and disregard all of her other lies, mistatments and cheapshots. She has shown the American people exactly who and what she is. I am tired of her nasty self promoting games and more importantly, I am disappointed that the DNC has allowed her to tear the Democratic Party apart. It was so many times last night where Obama could have torn her apart, instead, he in a sense protected her on Bosnia and tried to deal more with the issues the American people are really concerned with. Instead, she took out her dagger and continued to dig. That is not a sign of a fighter or of strength, it’s a sign of sleaziness, desparation and ignorance. Obama is clearly the better candidate. He is morally sound, trustworthy and genuinely concerned about the people. I have donated to his campaign at least twice a month and very proud to do so.
I am tired of listening to politcal analysis twist and turn words around and create massive issues out of nothing! This Primary has stressed me out and I have decided for my own morals and well being, that I will officially resign as a Democrat if Senator Obama is cheated out of the nomination.
I will leave the Hillary circus in November for the rest of you to enjoy and take my chances on the Republican side.
Sadly,
A Democrat on the fence.

I thought she was great too but it seems that the majority of Dems have already made up their minds and no matter how well she does now they will still support Obama. I don’t think she is getting a fair chance in this nomination process and that is a shame. For someone so capable they should treat her better. I do think their is buyer’s remorse setting in for some of the people who have voted already.

Yes Jo, you hit the nail on the head. “Weak” is the word that comes to my mind when I see him at the podium. Fear is written across his countenance, guilt in his demeanor. I sometimes feel sorry for him because I don’t think in a million years he ever imagined the scrutiny he is and will be under. We all have a pretty good idea who is working behind the scenes. Obama is a mere puppet, a sacrificial lamb, a talking-head. Take him off script and he is lost. So will America be lost if we follow him.

You are right.
Lastnight ABC prepared for the GE.
No matter what if Obama want to win the GE he has to face those issues.

I thought Sen. Clinton was quite wonderful. I think this debate demonstrated how brainy and solidly grounded in policy she really is. At the same time, I was shocked by Obama’s performance, which was dull, unprofessional and unprepared. It’s as if he didn’t care at all and while some of the questions were a little petty, he was evasive and dismissive. Last night helped me make up my mind.
Posted by: Kathy | April 17, 2008, 1:47 pm 1:47 pm
It was pretty obvious that Hillary was briefed beforehand on what the questions where going to be.
As for debating, she did not debate. She did not answer directly to any questions. All she did was rehash her stump speech over and over again.
Hillary fanboys can tout her “win” all they want but anybody who is neutral could tell that she came off as petty at best. I’m sure the Super Delegates got a taste of who Hillary Cliton is and I’m sure most made up their mind on this issue.
Face it guys, she is unelectable.

If Bill meant that Hills lies as reflexively as most folks breathe, than Ya she did a good job.
But lying, cheating, kneecapping and a willingness to do or say whatever it takes have always been why so many Hillary Fans love her.
Deep down inside these fans believe Hills will do whatever it takes to screw over the other side….. and they LOVE that.

A quote from Obama’s past relevant to this debate:
“What’s troubling is the gap between the magnitude of our challenges and the smallness of our politics—the ease with which we are distracted by the petty and trivial.”
I thought Clinton was awful. I was disgusted by the whole thing, actually.

No one knew he had ties to a bomber until it all came out in the news. Now what real American would have himself tied to people that supposedly set a bomb in NY. The ABC moderators manage to turn a potential opportuntiy to generate real discourse on important topics into a demeaning spectacle. Perhaps the most important comment elicited during this tawdry affair was Hillary’s assertion that she was willing to extend our security guarantees to countries throughout the Mideast. Astonishingly, this extraordinary comment generated no follow-up despite the significant implications of that policy pronouncement. Why am I not surpised.

The debate has served to get Hill in the corner and admit that Obama is electable and that he will win against her good friend McCain in November 08. The debate has demonstrated also that Hill the Bosnian General is unelectable and that was clearly seen in her own body language. Beyond these two points, it was really not a debate which real americans want to hear and to watch, as Obama said it that kind of debate will not put food on the kitchen table for working classes. Hill is poor mentally, the Bosnian General has performed very poorly as usual. She has to discuss her day dream about the Bosnian snipers. Let us wait for Hill’s negatives again. This time it will be close to 90%, worse than WBush and Cheney’s approval rates. Bill will do everything and say anything to get back in the White House so that the Lincoln bedroom will be a guesthouse again. But a 109 milion + 800 000 from Urube in Colombia couple has nothing to do with real Americans. God bless America and God bless obama.OBAMA08.

This debate was the most fair one yet. I liked that the responses were timed, and each were given an equal amount of time. I liked that the questions were staggered, and that they “flipped a coin” to see who would go first on opening and closings. I was impressed that both were challenged with tough questions and not allowed to wiggle out of fully answering.
ABC handled this debate in a very admirable way, and I think both candidates supporters should have been satisfied with the fairness of the debate, for a change. This is how journalists should handle debates. Both got hit with three very tough issues, some of which have been dominating the news. Obama: Rev. Wright, his infamous “bitter” remarks, and his association with William Ayers. Clinton: Her Bosnia exaggeration, her purported statements that Obama was unelectable, and a public opinion poll about her honesty.
For his part, Obama rationalized, made excuses, stammered a lot, and declared the subjects absurd and a distraction from the issues. While Clinton apologized and ate a lot of crow for her “mistakes,” describing her trip to Bosnia and got badgered into saying Obama is electable.
Their discussion of the issues wasn’t anything all that new; however, Obama did stumble a bit on his position on payroll and capital gains taxes. My main observation is that Clinton was ASKED questions about her positions on Wright and Obama’s bitter comments, and she responded, owning her position, while Obama hedged on the Bosnia question, admitting his “campaign” was hammering on it, “of course,” yet somehow dodging personal responsibility for what his campaign is doing? That just seemed dishonest to me. If his campaign is doing it – HE is. I’d much rather see the candidates own their positions and actions, than try and appear above the fray, when their actions don’t match the perception they’re trying to falsely portray.

melissa – 9:15 pm ET: Obama is trying to skate around his plans on the Social Security payroll tax. Gibson is right, lots of people make between $97,000 and $250,000, and their taxes would go up. Nobody wants to favor a tax hike, but Obama may be ceding the high ground of intellectual honesty by not calling this was it is.

BXMC,
The debate put Hillary in the corner? Are we talking about the same debate, where even on Daily Kos, Obama Kossack supporters are even admitting that Obama did a lousy job and they are starting to worry out loud about Obama.
That being said, there is already fallout about the debate hitting Obama. Obama said in the debate he barely knew Ayers. Fact checker at MSNBC just posted an article indicating that in fact, Obama attended a fundraiser at Ayer’s house, along with Bernadette Dohrn. Remember Dohrn, she is famous for publicly saluting mass murderer Charles Manson, using a satanic salute.

Clinton made a good point about Iraq. For example, a hypothetical Obama supporter living in their parent’s basement may do nothing until Mom and Dad say they will kick them out in 60 days unless they get a job and pay room and board. Right now, there is no motivation for Iraq to get tough with thier own people.

George Stephanopoulos is Clinton’s former press secretary. Why in the world was he allowed to moderate last nights debate?? HUGE CONFLICT OF INTEREST. What has been obvious for the past 15 months is how biased ABC News has been towards Clinton. I began noticing it on the evening news and then learning about George has solidified the fact that ABC News has Clinton’s back just as FOX News had Bush’s back. Horrible debate and detestable journalistic standards! This conflict of interest is way more of a news story than why Obama doesn’t wear a flag pin. FOR THE RECORD, neither does Hillary!

TRISHANC…THE POINT IS that Hillary has more baggage than BOSNIA, but none of that was brought up. ABC News is Owned by Disney, who’s CEO has filled Hillary’s campaign funds with thousands of dollars. The whole plan was to hurt Obama so that the superdelegates would see him in a different light. Rev. Wright is not the real issue. The issue is to keep a black man from becoming president. Clinton is no more qualified than anyone else, but she is white and that is ok with many white people. It does not matter to them if she is a pathological liar. This country is very racist and maybe now was the time for all this to surface so that the children who will be adults in the future will not have to deal with it.

Dogsoldier, WestCoastMessanger, geevil, russell, Ed et al, all HillLovers, wait for Hill’s negatives they will come out soon. Remember that Bill Clinton and his Special Assistant to the President of the USA i.e Hillary Bosnian Clinton have pardonned 2 people who are now being qualified as terrorists because you want to tie them to Obama. What do you think of BHill? Yes-Yes-Yes Hillary is unelectable and that is the reality and remember that is the pain you have to live with.God bless America and God bless Obama.OBAMA08.

Associations matter and directly reflect on one’s judgment, or lack thereof. On the matter of lapel pins, check the Flag Code; no clothing, jewelry, etc. is to be worn in the image of the US Flag. Obama sat on a board with former bombing radical Ayers and for Obama to dismiss this association is repugnant. This is the same audacity and mentality Obama used in regards to his long standing relationship with indicted Rezko. Wright, Rezko and Ayers sure are a group of bottom feeders; so much for Obama’s sound judgment. He seems to gravitate towards these types of bottom feeders. Kudos to ABC for smartening up and finally deciding not to continue giving Obama pandering passes. If other media outlets can lambast and go after Clinton with similar battering, who does Obama and his supporters think that that also isn’t good enough for him. Obama was finally caught off guard and out of his comfort zone because he was without prepared script and he misjudge the moderators as being passive and pandering to his likes.

Obama supporters are like little grasshoppers who learn from their master. When he gets caught dishing working people he says uses the old trick it’s not me it’s them! So no surprise to hear his supporters today crying that the reason he did so poorly was not because of the way he handled the questions, not it was because he was treated unfairly! Ah grasshoppers you have learned well, master very pleased!

What made me change from HILLARY to OBAMA was the Question on Social Security. Hillary wants a COMMISSION to fix Soc Security. Obama comes right out and says we just need to RAISE the CAP on earnings taxed from $97,000 to some higher number and not increase the Soc SEC Eligibility Age and not reduce Benefits. And we all know what Commissions do. they split the baby. So under Hillary you could expect some Lower Benefits and maybe a raise in the Age to collet. Its evident OBAMA is more for the People. I’m with him now !!

On top of that Obama lied with the flag pin question, he did state long ago that his is refusing to wear one.
He also lies about his writing on the questionnaire, and dance around the Ayres story saying he was 8 at the time, we all know that but he was an adult when he was associating with Ayres.

I was so disappointed by last night’s debate. Instead of focusing on the real issues Americans are facing today, Senator Obama was asked about a FLAG PIN!
What does his wearing/not wearing of a flag pin have to do with his ability to run the country? Seriously?
I’ve had it with the pandering. I’ve had it with the media patting us on the head and pretending that they know what issues Americans really want to know about. I’ve had it with the media feigning shock and moral outrage over non-issues, and treating us like we are all blathering idiots who can’t see exactly what they are doing. What about the economy? The housing crisis? The war?
I will still be voting for Obama in the Fall if he is the nominee. However, if he isn’t, I can safely say that I will be done with politics for a long time. Not because my candidate will have lost the race, but because I don’t want any part of politics as they are being played right now. Politics today have nothing to do with the issues, or what the candidates can really do for this country. It’s about God-damning America, sniper fire in Bosnia, and a 100-year war. Politics are nothing more than a game of one-upsmanship, and tearing down anyone who gets in the way.
And the media is just as much to blame as the candidates who engage in these types of politics. Elections are not won by the best candidate, but by the PR firm that can get the media to help them spin non-issues into campaign-crushing issues. It happened in 2004, and it will happen again this year. In the end, it will be the candidate that comes up with the best sound bite, and is better at spinning his/her opponent’s words and making them stick, that wins. It won’t matter what that candidate actually believes in – just what they (and the media) made the American public believe their opponent believes in.
Bitter? I’m not just bitter. I’m bitter, I’m angry, and I’m done with this game!

Hillary has to tell it like it is and has endured attacks from the far right and now from the far left, it is in the middle that she is loved and that is where most americans live! When Democrats run in the middle they win i.e. Bill Clinton, when they run from the left they lose, i.e. Gore and Kerry! It looks like we have not learned our lesson and are gultins for punishment!

BXMC,
Obama Bittergate’s negatives are quite fluid as well, hitting 51 today. What matters is not the negatives, though, it is the vote. Obama Bittergate will be crushed in Pennsylvania on this wave of bad news, radical underground ties, etc, and now the debate will be looked at as the turning point. He stumbled, and stammered, and, well frankly, acted like a bit of a fool. Not presidential.

Russell: I read your comments and you are so right. Obama had to think before he answered questions and good for Charlie and George. They stuck it to him last night not like Chris Matthews who is a supporter of Obama along with Shuster who should have been fired. CNN and MSNBC are pro-Obama and have done an injustice to Hillary and McCain promoting Obama all the time.

Ofcourse Bill is in high spirit about his wife. The moderators did the job for them. It’s worse than the mafia- ‘mugging, hit job’? It is obvious that this whole affair seemed to be predictive of the headline: that ‘Obama kept on defensive …’!
What passed for as a ‘debate’ last night was quite outrageously short on substance. The two journalists–Gibson and Stephanopoulos–should be ashamed of themselves for doing such a hack job. This is not to rail against the sharp questioning of Mr. Obama, but the disrespectful interruptions and the relentless biased questioning had no journalistic merit; it also appeared to be tinged with negativity towards Mr. Obama. Even for some lay perso, this kind of tabloid approach to such an important event appear unprofessional and borders on incompetence.
It’s laughable for the news media, like NYT to liken it to Tim Russet and Brian Williams’ questioning of Clinton; those journalists were professionals. Or does this have to do with ABC itself–ABC is owned by Walt Disney and its chief CEO is Robert Iger, an influential Clinton supporter. Perhaps a corporate decision was made to do a ‘hit job’. We also know Bill is Stephanopoulos old boss and may have wanted to curry favor with the boss’ wife. Generally, it was such a useless debate that we turned off the TV. And I will tell you many colleagues told me that they could not stand watching. Of course, media people want to look the other way and not criticize their colleagues–but this tabloid spectacle must have embarrassed every decent journalist. No wonder people generally have negative view of the media. These two ABC journalists looked like FOX news hacks. Shame! Shame! Shame!
Perhaps this crystalizes more how far the Clintons can go to win. It also exposes what the Clintons are all about. It was actually a turn off for Hillary to be so base.

ABC has never done a sloppier job. First, the candidates were standing all the time instead of sitting, then the questions were trite and so trivial you would think the moderators were paid by the GOP. Sad.

OH TED MY FRIEND – YOU DIDN’T LISTEN WELL TO HRC ANWERS ON SOCIAL SECURITY – AND OH YES HRC MADE 20 MILLION DOLLARS FOR 2007 AND OBAMA MADE 4.7 MILLION – SO MUCH FOR THE LITTLE PEOPLE AS OUR SELVES HOW EVER HRC IS SO CONFIDENT AND STRONG SHE WILL MAKE OUR COUNTRY BETTER AND OBAMA DID NOTHING BUT STAMMER. WHAT IS GOING TO DO IF HER WERE PRESIDENT. STAMMER. I WAS AN OBAMA VOTER UNTIL LAST NIGHT. IF HE DOESN’T HAVE A PREPARED ANSWER FOR A QUESTION HE FOLDS LIKE A DECK OF CARDS – WHO NEEDS THAT KIND OF PRESIDENT.
HRC DIDN’T STAMMER ONCE – SHE KNOWS HER STUFF. SHE IS A LEADER. THAT IS WHAT WE NEED IN PRESIDENT. GREAT JOB HILLARY – YOU EARNED MY VOTE LAST NIGHT.

The performance of Charley Gibson and Stephanopolis was disgraceful. Since when does a debate between the candidates become a debate between the candidate and moderator . Gibson especially was guilty of debating Obama on the impact of tax increases and did so with inaccurate and misleading information. Is Gibson running for prez? A hadn’t heard him declare. The questions were mere petty accusations and an embarrassment to intelligent Americans. The only revelation from this entire event was seeing Gibson’s true strips. I won’t be watching him or most if any of ABC’s news programming in the near future.

And I think most of us know that Juan McCAIN is just going to be 4 more years of disaster. At this time America needs a strong Liberal President. Someone who will really work for the People. And Barack OBAMA gives us the best chance of this. Indeed

How is Obama related or connected to a terrorist? Once again you people are playing the guilt by association card. I would like to know what all the people around you have done and said and then I will judge you on that. It’s crazy!!! If you want to play that game then the Clintons better look out. Do you realize the debate was supposed to be like a job interview? We want to know where the canidates stand on issues!!!! Not who they know or what that person said. If you walked into a job interview with your resume in hand and all the they cared about was who you were associated with it would take you back also. Come on already. Vote on the issues and electabilty! We all want to move this country in the right direction. If Obama is the nominee for the democratic party we must join together.

I thought the debate was GREAT! FINALLY both candidates get asked some tough questions. And I disagree with the people here who think the issues weren’t legitimate. These are questions people are asking all over the Internet and which the media, until very recently, has not touched upon.
A President has to be held to a higher standard than the rest of us. People are not blindly going to vote for a President when he has failed to prove that he has either the experience or the good judgment or the readiness to take the highest office in this land or if he refuses to answer basic questions about his associations with radicals, criminals and terrorists!
Because the race for the democratic nomination is a virtual tie (no candidate achieving the necessary pledged delegates to seal the deal) this nomination is probably going to be decided by the Superdelegates who are going to have to pick the strongest candidate to run against John McCain. So the argument for who is the strongest national candidate, and questions pertaining to that ARE the most important questions right now.
Posted by: CJ | April 17, 2008, 2:55 pm 2:55 pm
Bill’s right. Hillary, once again, demonstrated how a strong, confident, and visionary candidate should behave during a debate. There was nothing trivial about the moderators queries related to patriotism, and Obama’s relationships with the likes of Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers. Obama wants people to “move on” because he knows his affiliations will alienate millions of Americans, and call his veracity and judgment into question once the Kool Aid haze wears off. Patriotism is no small issue, and neither is the company of scoundrels Obama keeps. As usual, Obama downplayed his friendship with Bill “the bomber” Ayers and his familial-like relationship with Wright. He also failed to explain how it’s possible that he didn’t know about Wright’s incendiary sentiments after twenty years as a member of TUCC.
ABC did a great service to all of us by asking the questions republicans will certainly ask in the G.E., because when the media playing field is level, Hillary wins.
Posted by: Emily | April 17, 2008, 2:55 pm 2:55 pm
What on earth is all this “indignant” reaction to ABC’s debate about? Please people, we are talking about looking at hiring someone (and it is that) to do the toughest job in the world and we are afraid to ask the really tough questions that linger in the minds of many, many people? I can read about the plans of both people on their websites, ad nauseum, and I can read the opinions of those plans or things less tangible about the candidates in columns, but I want to see how these people can handle the really tough, revealing questions that show a person’s character, on pointe, without a speech or teleprompter. This was a very tough, stark (no applause – love that!) debate that pushed issues we have with both candidates and those that will certainly be pushed by the Republicans. This is not a job for the faint of heart, or light of spirit, otherwise we all would be applying.
I sat thru the entire debate and tried very hard to keep an open mind. Afterall, one of these two people could be the next President. The only problem I had with the moderators was not nailing the candidates on a direct answer to a specific question, or even an indirect answer would have been nice. All in all, I think Hillary won this one. She seemed to maintain her composure (a good thing when times are tough as a President) and answer most of the questions, more so than Obama. She did loft a few bombs his way and one can argue it was personal, but I thought maybe there’s another reason: maybe she really knows that if he is the nominee, that the Republicans will make mincemeat of him with his questionable ties to Rezko, Ayers, Wright, and his revealing comments behind closed doors when cameras aren’t rolling and teleprompter is off. If the Republicans can destroy the character of two very good, credible men (Gore, Kerry) without much to work with, what on earth will they do to this guy? Afterall, isn’t it MOST important that we elect anyone except a Republican who still thinks Sunni’s and Shiites are reversed and thinks GWB’s policies are “OK”?!

Futher, she has been the more negative of the two candidates, voted FOR a way that Americans are agaisnt, and made stupid campaing decisions early on that led to bad coverage. It’s not an issue of fairness.

Hillary has been doing the best at the debates even before Iowa (if you watched them). Obama has been doing bad at them but the last 2 (texas and ohio) he improved. But last night he is back to his old debating skills – which aren’t so good.

So for months, Hillary gets second billing and negative photos, negative commentary down to the point that even when she was leading all the media could say was how far along Obama was. That was okay, trash Hillary and promote Obama in the press. Gee even Saturday night got the skit right. Now, he gets a little heat and can’t operate under pressure and look at the griping. Obama has bought every available cite on the web, you can hardly look for anything without his ads popping up. If you post a comment, it gets deleted. Maybe you buy off the young and dumb, but no matter what, if people care about this country then they want the most experienced, most intelligent being in charge and frankly that is Hillary. Obama can’t compete with her on this level at all.
Posted by: CM | April 17, 2008, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm
The Obama supporters are not doing their candidate any favors by demanding that he always get the easy questions.
If he does win the nomination the Republican are going to throw everything at him, they are not going to ask about his tie or if he brushed his teeth this morning.
He will get more than the kitchen sink, he will have to talk about his love for this country, Rezko, Ayres, his house, his drug use, you name it he is going to get it.
There will be no time for the uhh haa uhh stuttering, or the out right lies to distort the truth, he is not going to get off as easy as he did last night, so rather than blame ABC it would be better for some of you to insist that your candidate has all the answers because it will only get harder from now on.

You call that debate? It was piling on..a rugby match with Barrack was at the bottom. Democratic candidates for Prez refused to debate on FOX thinking that the so called mainsteam media like ABC News is better, huh? Well, people now know that the most powerful forces in media are Drudge Report, FOX News and the tabloid press. They lead with their non-issue stories and the rest follow. CNN depends on them, as well as NBC News and CBS. Some of us who knew this all along are not surprised. The question is, what took the rest of you so long to know the truth. Yeah, liberal bias!

Stop picking on DogSoldier. You guys are so juvenile. To say that Obama won that debate or even looked half-way presidential in that debate is just proof that you are zombies. If he’d won, I’d say so but he was terrible and all you can say is who cares. A LOT OF PEOPLE DO. He answered every question with some lame attack on Hilary, even bringing up Bill. Didn’t he say a while back that he didn’t know if he was running against Bill or Hilary? Sounds like he still can’t figure it out. And the Jimmy Carter slam. C’mon, the guy is a former DEMOCRATIC president! Very immature politically. Sorry Obama and his supporters but these questions on character ARE relevant especially when this country is locking people up in Gitmo FOREVER based on who they “allegedly” know. Why was she not asked about NAFTA and the flip flop she did? The only hard question she had was on Bosnia!! To the person who said it must have been my first debate you are sadly mistaken. I have seen all of them! By the way I am from Iowa where this all began and the first state to get it right. Oh wait, we are a caucus state so by Hillary’s terms we don’t matter.

I agree with Bill! Hillary was awesome last night.
Poor Obama was expecting a pillow and ended up getting pelted with a few hardballs. After 15 months of watching MSN and CNN drool and grovel at his feet, it was quite refreshing to see media not hypnotized by him.
He proved himself to be inexperienced in responding to direct attacks off the cuff, something a US president has to know how to handle every day of the week for 4 years.

Michelle: Ican see why you don’t like Hillary you have the same name as Obama’s wife. And she has run of the mouth. And I can see by your comments you have the same thing. Obama made his bed and now he can lie in it. Where have you been. Obama is a good double talker, liar and a racist that he hides from the white people. Obama doesn’t like white people he uses them for his own advantage and most of this generation is the same as you. Dumb as they come. College did nothing for him. My guess is they passed him thru to get rid of him because of the booze and drugs and he set a bad example. Anyone that would vote for a candidate that belonged to an anti-american church with a racist pastor who hates whites is just as bad as the pastor. Also, Obama having close ties to Ayers and Ayres two underground dogs who were involved in a bombing. Maybe your drinking too much.

Tiffany, SHE’d been the only one getting the hard questions before. How many times has Obama been asked about Rezko, and how many people in American know about this? How many times had Obama been asked about ANY of these questions until last night? I think only Obama-fans are unable to see that your guy got a free pass from the media for a long time.
Now, I agree she did not get too many hard questions yesterday, but isn’t she the underdog now, anyway???

I don’t think the debate changed anyone’s mind. If folks don’t know who the candidates are by now they haven’t been paying attention. All the debate did was re-inforce already held opinions by each candidate’s supporters…I just wish this whole primary season was over so we could all rest up for the general election.
Posted by: indy_voter | April 17, 2008, 3:33 pm 3:33 pm
Obama is applying for the position of president not elementary school principal. If he can’t take the heat then he has no business being our President. I agree, these Obama people are such whiners! Should have gone with John Edwards if you wanted to win in the General Election. Get used to saying President John McCain.
Posted by: cafenitro | April 17, 2008, 3:33 pm 3:33 pm
I think ABC did a great job with last night’s debate. They skewered both candidates equally and watched them turn on the spit.
Both candidates will lie, cheat, and steal to get elected. That’s what politics is all about. It doesn’t bother me as long as the job gets done.
I think Obama will make a good president in 8 years but he hasn’t shown me he is ready for prime time yet. I would feel much more comfortable vvoting for him if there were 50 books about his life already published.
As it is now I am really worried about some of his friends and associates. I can’t imagine associating with anyone who has ever advocated bombing let alone done it and killed people. I was truly shocked that Obama brushed that association off as a “distraction.”
I really want to like Obama since there is a 50% chance he will be our next president. I hope and pray that there are no other skeletons in his closet that would force me to vote for McCain in November. While I deeply admire McCain he is too out of touch with the American Middle Class to be an effective president.

Olga Songg: Do you think you can do a better job than George. I don’t think so. Are you bitter that the media finally brought the worst in Obama that the public didn’t know. That Chris Matthews would never bring out because he is an Obama promoter. Good for George and Charlie. Their could be a lot more dirty laundry about Obama we don’t know about. His close ties to underground bombing dogs is enough. And he has the nerve to want to run this country? And as far as the Bosnia trip Obama has don much worse. Attending a racist church with a racist white hating pastor and claims he never heard the pastor preach those words. Give me a break. Obama might make this generation of fools believe him but the battleground states were smart. He got left in the dust.

Divided we fall-right into the Republicans lap. I would like to point out other then me stating Bill lying, where did I put down Hillary? You Hillary people are constantly negative attacking just like her. I said it before and I will say it again if she manages to STEAL this nomination I would have to vote for the lesser of 2 evils. In case you’re wondering that is Hillary, but only by a slim margin.
Posted by: Tiffany | April 17, 2008, 3:40 pm 3:40 pm
That is precisely the problem, Tiffany: You say it’s “the Clintons” who are constantly attacking, when the truth is that all of them are politicians (and darn good, as Obama said), and ALL OF THEM attack at each other. All of them. Including Obama. Of course, you only notice when everybody else is on the offensive against your candidate, and not the other way ’round.

We are all playing into the hands of the media, in my opinion are controlled by the wealthy. They enjoy just what everyone is doing putting each other down then divide and control, not conquer but control. As long as we are at each other we can’t see what they are doing to us. It appears we have lost the American spirit of fair play and honesty. Why is it we have to have someone to hate or feel better than? Why can’t we feel good about ourselves and love our neighbor? I like many others appreciate a good fight but when the fight is rigged it’s ugly and insulting. The only way to put a stop to the negativity is demand better from our leaders and of ourselves. Let’s start being Americans again and live up to the Constitution. What happened to Truth, Justice and the American Way?
We have a right to like the person we are for without putting down the other person. What George and Charlie did last night was WRONG and UGLY.
My GOD; it shouldn’t be about Democratics or Republicans but about the AMERICAN PEOPLE – WE THE PEOPLE.

This was not an attack against Obama, the media was bringing up the MAJOR concerns that many of us have that Obama is NOT a trustworthy individual. I don’t understand how anyone could trust a man that has been with this pastor for so many years amongst so much other dirty laundry. He is all talk and we will all be sorry if he gets elected. Hillary is in this for the people and she has the experience we need – VOTE FOR HILLARY!! She is the only one who will truly change this country and we need her desperately.

Tiffany,
1) They did not ask about Michelle comment (you mention about Bill deal)
2) They did not ask him about Rezko case.
Is that fair enough?

WCM – You gotta give BKMC his dues. The guy is consistent, isn’t he? However, it is rather difficult for him to discuss Obama’s poor performance last night otherwise he’d have to deal with reality. So, blame the bad men at ABC. Blame Hillary? Blame O’Reilly? Blame Hannity? What else can the poor fellow do? Admit Obami is a teleprompter airhead?

What about many many months Obama on the honey moon with CNN,MSNBC etc??
ABC please be strong, Charlie, George ..appreciate your works.
We still behind you guys.
Keep on working…

The debate was a total joke. The two host did a horrible job. Let me make a point. It is well known that college students and college grads typically support Obama. Yet many who lack intelligence suggest that if you support Obama you are a robot. That is hillarious. We are not the ones that cannot make an intelligent decision. This is why we research, analyze each candidate and refuse to fall for the Clinton machine.

WHAT AN ELITIST COMMENT TO MAKE!
By the way, it’s hilarious, not “hillarious.”

All these Obama fools complaining can only mean one thing.
Obama looks FOOLISH when the media comes after him.
The Obama fans are so brainwashed into thinking that the media will just give him what he wants on a silver platter, they are SHOCKED when he gets grilled .
In a general election, this is exactly how he will be treated.
The Obama fans fear what we have been saying all along. He is SCREWED in a general election. He looks weak.

I thought Hillary explained so very clearly the problems, her solutions, and why her solutions were superior. In contrast, Obama was hesitant, unfocused, and gave less substantive answers. I understand he may not have expected some questions, but he really wilted under the pressure.

Why is it ok to put the screws to Hillary, Like CNN and MSNBC did during their debates, but it’s not ok to ask Obama the hard questions??? He’s such a crybaby-what’s he going to do when the Republicans rake him over the coals? What a wuss!!!

you don’t need an internet poll to know who won the debate last night. If one Obama supporter can give me a concrete solution to a problem that America faces that Obama answered with his OWN ideas without stumbling or just rewording what hillary said then I will give you that he had an OK performance. Come on guys, when Hillary doesn’t do well we admit it. She had a wonderful perforamce last night and you have to give her that. I’m sorry to dissapoint you, I know its hard to see Mr. Obama fumble, but come next Tuesday you’ll see him loose in PA by 15% so you better get used to it. My blogs normally aren’t like this but after all of this bs media bias its about time that he got pummeled.
GO HILLARY

It’s easy to come out the winner when your husbands former staffer is asking the questions. How many members of the staff are there at ABC who could have run second chair for Gibson, but they choose the one person who has a HUGE conflict of interest. In that regard the debate was clearly biased. Maybe Bill even wrote the questions for little Georgie S.

I thought she did great, too. Finally, someone in the media grilled Obama on his lack of judgment. Obama has gotten a free pass for too long and kudos to ABC for a good debate.

Why is this news that Bill Clinton thought that Hillary did a good job? Did we expect him to say anything else? ABC News are you a news organization … part of the fourth estate … with a serious role to play in our democracy? Start doing your job … highlight the significant differences between candidates positions and their proposed solutions.

Typical white people, clinging to antipathy for people who are not like them. No, No, No, G*d Dam* America! Hillary ain’t never been called a n*ger. This is the first time I have been proud of my country.
The US will NEVER allow this racist in the White House!

All that happened in the debate last night was that obama was shown to be ineffective. He did this to himself. No One person did this to obama.
Now I read where his followers want to have George S and Charles G fired. Am I reading this correctly? This was a public event. Obama did poorly – you don’t have the guts to blame obama, for then you will see feet of clay, but you want Charles Gibson fired? You followers are very truly sick in the head and this is what a cult will do to you. You obama followers are no different than the cult just torn down in Texas – same type of thinking.
I have never heard of anything so insipid in my life – you don’t like what you have seen that obama did to himself. You really wanted George and Charles to bash Clinton and you would have praised them right? You followers need a cult shrink that can change your way of thinking. OMG I can’t believe I am reading stuff like this. Maybe the followers should all get together, take obama, his wife, and his preacher and his other Anti-American associates and move to Africa where he can wear his Muslim cloths and be your president. I don’t think this will be welcome in America as it is being proved right this minute.

Sad to see Americans consider these kinds of questions important and valid in a presidential ‘debate’. This is actually what Americans want to see discussed? I ‘love’ these comments: ‘He did this to himself!’. ‘He was weak ’cause he didn’t attack Hilary!’. And, then, ‘It is poor judgement to associate with bad characters’. Let see now,…I’m not a religious expert but wasn’t it Jesus who was criticized by the Pharisees for associating with Tax Collectors? I suppose we should keep ‘clean’ our associations ’cause that will make us better, more patriotic Americans, eh? Don’t want to be seen working with and trying to help drug addicts, angry people, criminals, poor people, street people,.. those who’ve criticised the country? No, thaaaat would be wrong & unpatriotic. Life is meant to be pure and unadulterated by such nasty nasty associations. It does far more good to turn one’s back on those unsavory sorts. Yep.

What do I think of last night’s debate ? I think that my time is precious and I could have spent it playing with my 3 year old rather than try to become better informed by watching a rerun of Entertainment Tonight disguised as a ‘Presidential Debate’ – It was real garbage and it makes feel more cynical and , yes, bitter.

Bill: Stay out of this race. You didn’t do a good job in your last term and you won’t get back into the white house no matter how much you try.
I will guarantee that if your wife wins the nomination, many democrats will not vote at all or vote for John McCain.
You talk about Obama whining – you and Hillary have been whining throughout the white house years and since October, that she was not getting a fair shake.
