Clinton Advisors Pushed for Penn to Go
EmailFrom Eloise Harper, Kate Snow and Jake Tapper: Senator Hillary Clinton made the decision to push out senior strategist Mark Penn from her campaign Sunday after key aides became concerned that his outside work on a Colombian free-trade agreement that Clinton opposes might risk alienating key labor unions.
With the Pennsylvania primary looming in just two more weeks, that risk was considered too great.
Sources tell ABC News, two top advisors made the case to the Senator to remove Penn — Harold Ickes and Tina Flournoy. Flournoy is a longtime teacher’s union leader who has taken on a prominent role in the Clinton campaign ever since Maggie Williams took the helm as campaign manager.
Ickes and Flournoy told Senator Clinton, according to sources, that she needed to “throw Penn under the bus” to regain the support of unions. Trade is a prominent issue in the Pennsylvania primary.
Former President Bill Clinton — who has long been a fan of Penn’s — argued that Penn could be demoted and not completely let go. But in the end, even President Clinton recognized that this was the last straw, after months of internal bickering between Penn and other senior staff.
Penn and his firm, Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc, will still continue to provide polling information to the campaign, but sources indicated that his day-to-day role will be much reduced. He will no longer serve as chief strategist. Instead, pollster Geoff Garin along with Communications Director Howard Wolfson will head up the message for the campaign.
On Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Penn had met with the Colombian Ambassador to the United States — in his capacity as the head of public relations firm Burson-Marsteller — in order to help the Colombian government push for congressional approval of a free trade agreement with the United States.
The problem? Senator Clinton — the candidate for whom Penn was also working—opposes that trade agreement.
Later on Friday, Penn described the meeting as “an error in judgment”. On Saturday, the Colombian government cancelled its contract with Penn’s firm.
On Saturday, seven labor unions that are part of the "Change to Win" coalition wrote a letter to Clinton, urging her to fire Penn.
“The Penn situation — and the lack of action by you — raises serious questions about the veracity of your claims of what you would do should you become President,” wrote Executive Director of ‘Change to Win’ Greg Tarpinian.
Clinton officials were particularly concerned about the prospect of thwarting any potential union endorsements they might have hope of receiving. While they concede Sen. Barack Obama D-IL has been more successful with gaining support from labor lately, they are hanging on to the slim possibility that the steelworkers might decide to endorse Clinton. Aides were deeply concerned that allowing Penn to stay on the job would kill that possibility.
Aside from President Clinton, Penn did not have many allies left at senior levels of the Clinton campaign. After every big loss, and when the campaign ran into financial problems prior to Super Tuesday, there were persistent rumors that Penn might be forced out.
Sources familiar with the discussions over the past few days said Penn’s enemies seized on the Colombia issue as a way to finally reduce Penn’s role.
The Colombia trade controversy was not the first case in which a client of Penn’s irritated the Clinton campaign.
The work a Burson Marsteller subsidiary did for controversial war contractor Blackwater, and Penn’s work for the union-busting corporation, Cintas, were other instances in which the Clinton campaign didn’t appreciate having its name associated with Penn clients.
Penn also was regarded by many in the campaign as too self-serving, particularly after a Los Angeles Times profile of the campaign written after her horrible month of February, with many primary losses, when Penn was quoted saying that he had "no direct authority in the campaign," describing himself as merely "an outside message advisor with no campaign staff reporting to me."
"I have had no say or involvement in four key areas — the financial budget and resource allocation, political or organizational sides," he reportedly said. "Those were the responsibility of Patti Solis Doyle, Harold Ickes and Mike Henry, and they met separately on all matters relating to those areas."
That eyebrow-raising display of running from failure was contradicted by senior staffers such as Wolfson, who told the newspaper that Penn had top responsibility for strategy and message.
Then there was this infamous exchange with Clinton consigliere Ickes from a recent Washington Post profile of the campaign:

I find this very desturbing, what is going on with Hillary? This is another example of how her campaign is falling apart. Hillary need to get out of the race and stop dividing the party. The 2003 announcement had clear benefits for the senator and the company: Tata received good press, and Clinton burnished her credentials as a champion for New York’s depressed upstate region.
So if you do support her ,in a year or two expect the Colombian Trade Deal to go into effect.
Thats why Penn is still on Hillary Payroll for polling purposes only my butt.

Mark Penn could not have been much of a chief strategist since Hillary seems to be losing voters to Obama by the minute! The Clinton’s cannot seem to catch a break even from their so-called close friends. First, Bill Richardson betrays them and now Mark Penn. I am a nobody but I have never betrayed a friend. Trade is a prominent issue in the Pennsylvania primary.
So Hillary brings an Indian company to NY promising 200 jobs out of the deal (but how many did they give away?) and it ends up that only 10 jobs are created. I guess those Indian companies are making huge donations to Hillary’s war chest just like Israel, and lobbyists are. Is this woman really a democrat? The story continues

I hadn’t read this article in mens vogue. But I looked it up and its true.
At a fundraiser When Morgan Freeman comes over to greet Obama, the senator begins bowing down both hands in worship. “This guy was president before I was,” says Obama, referring to Freeman’s turn in Deep Impact and, clearly, getting a little ahead of his own bio. Next, a nod to Bruce Almighty: “This guy was God before I was.” (Okay, more than a little ahead.) But Freeman is eating it up. Leaning in, he tells the senator to win it. “I will,” Obama replies. “That’s why I’m running.”
Isn’t it amazing how this stuff doesn’t make headlines?? If Hillary or anyone else said something like this imagine what would happen.
I’ve always referred to Obama as the Messiah because he portrays that do as I say arrogant attitude. This man is UNELECTABLE.
Wake up fellow Americans and Democrats..If we want to get into the white house..Vote for Hillary. Otherwise it will be a fifty state landslide for Mccain, and for the first time in my adult life I will no doubt vote republican.

It is a disservice for the Media to claim that Mark Penn has been fired or has stepped down or that he will not be affiliated with the campaign. This is contradicted in Maggie Williams’ statement which says “After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as Chief Strategist of the Clinton Campaign; Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign. ” From the following statement it is accurate for the Media to say he has been DEMOTED! Although many in the Media are trying to insinuate that he has been fired or has stepped down, this is a FABRICATION and Media has a right to inform Truth and not falsifications.

Anyone with any Political smarts and savvy, should know that the Clintons are not REALLY getting rid of Penn and that this is just a smoke screen — he is far too valuable to them and knows WAY too much for them to push him under the bus. He will still be pulling the strings behind that Wizard of Oz Curtin, as they say,polling and advising! This is just more double talk, double speak, misstate, misspeak and misspoke moment. In one of the debates with Edwards, Clinton and Obama there was a question, “what is your biggest weakness?” posed to all candidates.
Obama goes first: “I am not well organized when it comes to paper. I always need some help with that.”
Clinton: “I am too impatient to bring about change in this country”
Edwards: “I cant wait to change this country”
Later Obama recalled this event in one of his rallies. He said, had I gone third I would have said, “my biggest weakness is my compulsion to help old ladies across the street”.
Bottomline is, the Clinton’s don’t mean what they say or say what they mean!!
Clinton against Columbia free trade agreement, but chief strategist Penn is already negotiating with them! What a surprise!

Finally, Last September, Clinton was clear cut favorite for the Democratic nomination; she had over 20% lead nationwide;Obama was an afterthought…Today, Obama has a 12% lead nationwide, 134 delagate lead, 700,000 popular vote lead, won 25 states and has shattered donation records. The clintons have thrown the kitchen sink and the bathroom tub and he still survied and maintain his lead. In the process I think he is vetted. I dont think there nothing McCain can do to Obama that the Clintons have not already done. The way he managed and organized this campaign is exceptionally…One must use this example on how he will lead America. Its time for a change and that change is Obama.

Free trade implies unrestricted movement of capital and profits with very little regulations, if any, from local governments and communities. While this may free up business to be highly profitable, there is no guarantee of protection for the workers, the environment or sharing of natural resources. How can this be all good?

Tom, The truth be told she is the one attacking herself because she can’t seem to distinquish the truth from a lie or a misspoke.
The fact is her credability is sinking because of the “Shots fired over our heads” comments, the back door free trade agreement with Colombia fiasco by her #1 stratagist (sounds like he was stratagizing alright)her lie about firing the travel office when she was in the white house…need I go on?

Sen. Barak Obama has emphasized Change; change the status quo; that’s his campaign slogan. What more status quo than Murdoch family and their influence peddling empire? Can you believe that Rupert Murdoch’s daughter Elisabeth Murdoch is planning fundraiser in London, away from scrutiny of American media; not that our media is going to say anything even slightly critical of Sen. Gosh. This is about the last straw for me. I live in Ohio and voted for Senator Clinton, but the lying is just outrageous. I even researched the whole NAFTA thing (after the primary unfortunately) and discovered that it was Clinton, not Obama, that was making back room deals with the Canadian government… of course, ABC didn’t report that little fact. I wish I could have my primary vote back, but I can assure you that Senator Clinton won’t be receiving any more votes from me!!

I find it amazing the press didn’t do it’s job in covering that….There is clear and conviencing evidence that her promoting of NAFTA was not in line with what she has been telling people on the campaign trail. There are videos of meetings, written documentation…..the list is huge. It appears Hillary is a fake. It doesn’t matter when the meeting with Penn took place….she, herself, has been busted.

When Bill Clinton left office the economy was better than it had been in 40 years. Gas prices were 1/3rd of what they are today. The Clintons are for real. Who were the last people to actually try and reform healt care? Ther clintons. and that is when the attacks started. I was called a typical white person by Obama just few weeks ago!
Allthough I was thinking about voting for him since I am very much offened and don’t think that he will be a good president for our country.
What I have seen at TV video clips of his hateful church against the white people, his pastor’s disgusting comments against the US goverment, I am positive obama is under influence and hates the United States! Because he does not wear a 9/11 pin, his wife said she was proud of america for the first time of her life, he does not salute the flag! That is too much for me!!!

Clinton an intelligent, quite capable woman is and that scares the daylights out of you he-men doesn’t it and some of you women as well. McCain did cheat on his first wife, rumors about an affair while married to his second wife are rumors. His second wife stole drugs from a charity she was working for, its all in the biography on the Biography show on cable. Obama, well I just don’t know. Lets face it, no one is that perfect, well except Jesus and he “ain’t” no Jesus. Plus I believe he’s either the most naive person I’ve ever seen on TV or he’s being dishonest about his plans and goals as our future president. We won’t know until its too late, because the media had decided he’s their little darling and won’t touch anything negative about him. Which again gives one pause, when has the media ever handled anyone with kid gloves? As far as the way Hilary handled Penn, go for it girl, its your show, don’t have anyone around you that is going to muddy up the water, you’ve got the press to do that for you and these “concerned citizens” who believe every little thing they hear or read. I agree with you Maryanne first of all in that, what if someone discriminated against us and said we can’t do this or that based on our name, the car we drive, our religion, etc. etc. etc. saying he is a Muslim and shouldn’t be president is DUMB. It is clear he is a Christian. But, even if he were as you stated, it is NO ONE’s business. It’s not a CRIME to be of a certain practicing faith….We already had this war/argument with the Puritans….
Secondly, I don’t have anything against Hillary as a person – she’s lied and misrepresented many of her positions – but 16 years in public office can make one forget things!….Not to mention it’s almost second nature in politics to lie….. Anyway, she is ok as a person for sure. So, it doesn’t matter to me – in the end – if she is the nominee or Obama. Either one will get my support.
However, if the Republicans get any help from dis-satisfied angry supporters of hers and McCain wins come November, sign me up for helping to defeat Hillary come November 2011 and 2012. So sick of reading these sour grape comments everyday…..As someone else so correctly stated, 8 years is a long time and the Republicans can take a lease out on the WH is they want, I could care less.
My family and I will be ok. I’m not a millionare like the Clinton’s but my wife and I do just fine with our two incomes… Not to mention the fact that we are professionals……I don’t know how the rest of the world will get along but we will sure see.

I was trying to figure out why people keep bringing up this “typical white person” whom I’ve never met. If you are quoting Obama, make sure you post the whole quote so that people who are too lazy to look for the quote will not get confused: “The point I was making was not that Grandmother harbors any racial animosity. Now her hearing aid might not have been working well and it took her a little time to adjust, but the point is that not too long ago generations of Americans (including a “typical white person”) had ingrained “reactions” whenever they encountered people of different ethnicities. This is something that many have had to overcome, but that doesn’t invalidate the point I think Obama was trying to make. Oh I’m not an Obama supporter(I don’t agree with his healthcare plan, it’s not thorough enough), I’m just trying to give my opinion on that quote that people are throwing around.

I watched MLK on the History channel yesterday. A truly great man and there was so much humility in him. He spoke from the heart and what he believed was that all men are born equal and that you cannot win by bringing someone else down. His was an effort born out of togetherness. He was a true leader. He showed the world what sacrifice meant. Obama does not even come close to MLK and it is a shame that he allows people to compare him to MLK. There was not a bone of selfishness in MLK. He was so humble and all about non-violence. He would never have been seen in the vicinity of the likes of Rev. Wright. Shame on you Obama to not have the courage to stand up and say that MLK is at a level that is hard to reach for you. There is so much hate and division in what you believe. We know this by your associations. You do not know how to speak from the heart since you are lost without a teleprompter. You do not hesitate to win by deceit and your campaign is all about hiding the true you so the public can be easily deceived. PA please take the time to find out about Senator Obama. The larger world which I come from is watching you Americans. You can no more moralise us because you all lack good morals.
You want to teach my children to believe in lies and thrive under chaotic circumstances.
Americans lack good values and hate the truth. You need to reposition your country internationally, it does not take only your president to do that, it does not take your leaders to tell the world that you are an embodiment of freedom. You need to play your own diplomatic roles towards a more peaceful world.
We in the larger world has observed Americans for what they truly are, you are racist amongst yourselves be you white or black and you have nothing worth emulating. You preach hate and hope that the world would love you for selling hate to African nations and middle east. I love America growing up and I still do but some times you all need to learn the truth. The world needs you to restore hope not hatred and discontentment in the 21st century. I believe there is a thin line between peace in this world and chaos and your leaders know for a fact that this is true.
Blunt truth is that Obama represent that broader appeal in the larger world and that is what you need . Well you may not care but I think of the future of my kids even as you are expected to lead by example as the world super power. Russia knows that you are in charge and China knows that without your trade indulgence with them they are nothing. What then is the right thing to do, do your country want to remain consistently vulnerable to bud nib oil prices that Russia, Iran and the opec nations are selling to them or innovatively come up with long term checks on fossil fuel consumption.?
Clintons lost my respect not quite long. They stink beyond tolerance and it is disgusting to see that some of you still think highly of them. Americans, you are without shame. Food for thought; my morals is higher than yours judging from your choices.

What we know about Obama:
Cannot take a stance, even against someone as bad as Wright. There is a certain fear about Wright since Wright might direct his hate against Obama. How will this man stand up against Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, China…..
Cannot deliver a speech without a teleprompter. Hems and Haws if forced to speak. Looks for the direction of the wind before responding.
Lies effortlessly and throws people out for fodder to suit his needs — unless ofcourse he is afraid of them — like Michelle and Wright.
Will increase payroll taxes — has said that he would.
Very liberal in his voting record.
No real convictions in life. There is nothing in Obama that we can say he stood up for!!

Tom NYC, Bill was impeached by the House of Representatives and narrowly acquitted by the Senate. He betrayed all Americans with his shameful behavior and by providing ammunition to his enemies to pursue. I use the phrase HillBilly because to me Hillary and Bill are a team joined at the hip, always were and always will be. And, I do not believe as Michelle stated that, if elected, Bill will be thrown in the backyard with the rest of the dogs. I believe America deserves better than the Clintons Act 2.

I am voting for whichever candidate is against the war, has a middle class economic plan and will appoint judges who are not right wing. It doesn’t matter who wins the nomination, I will not vote for McCain who is pro-war, anti-economy and will appoint right wingers. I am not going to make my decision based on the silliness of the supporters of either side. I support Obama and try to defeat Clinton, but there is no way I will ever vote for McCain. That would be completely against anything I stand for.

Jim B, it’s true you are not running. Neither we. Obama and his supporters have created a campaign based on racism. We can see that a lot of people go for Obama based on their emotion and their race, not on the issue. Just look at the percent of blacks who vote for him, you will have the answer! We chose not to vote for Obama based on his thin resume, his flip flop side, and more on issues, not just what you might say about Hillary!

For anyone still not sure about huge bias against Clinton, you don’t need to look any further than CNN’s coverage tonight about Trade Agreements. Rather, than educating those of us not directly impacted by this issue – but clearly an important one – Campbell Brown chooses to focus instead on the Mark Penn issue.
So, CNN gets to slam Clinton and fails to educate us about the issue.
The media is pathetic. We need to wake up. Campbell Brown is a lightweight – currently under the auspices of a publicist – whose job it appears is to convince us that she can handle her job.

When the stories of this part of the 2008 election cycle are written, the politics of personal destruction by the way will be traced back to that crude comment made by Michelle Obama last summer about Clinton: “If she can’t run her own …….

For those lacking in the subtalies of politics, Hill let go a man who was key to her campaign, whose politics directly conflicted with the “truth” she told voters, on a day that she knew no-one would be listening.
She fired a man who was her key policy maker, who made policies she pretended not to advocate, but who was actively pursuing those policies . . . she disassociated herself . . . from both him and those policies, when it became too difficult to sustain the fraud . . . on a day when she had to defend herself from a different fraud (woman died b/c she didn’t have heath ins. but she did), on a day that the headline of the day required that she establibh her civil rights creds.
Well, Hill, our civil rights are not a fantacy. Our truth is.
Get with the truth.
Don’t shroud your lies in the honor of those that came before you. MLK deserves better than to become the shroud of your lies.

Obama was NEVER supposed to win Texas! But, for him to CLOSE a gap of 20+ percentage points is huge. And, in case you can’t read – he actually won more delegates than she did from this(Texas) state. Look it up if you didn’t know it. What did she win? She won the popular vote and the primary by four stinking points. Four points! Four points is hardly anything to brag about. Regardless, when it was all computed, he actually WON this state. See, those Republicans that voted for her, didn’t really give a damn about her or care enough to show up and caucus for her.
I tell you something else too, if she can’t blow him out and only eeks out wins by a single digits she is in major trouble. Furthermore, even if she won them all, she still won’t be the nominee. Face it, the Democratic establishment hate the Clintons (moreso than the Republicans) rightly so.
