Clinton Surrogate Bob Johnson Says Ferraro Was Right, Obama Only Is Where He Is Because He’s Black
Billionaire Bob Johnson, the founder of BET, last seen publicly raising Sen. Barack Obama’s youthful drug use, then denying it, then apologizing for it, has stepped into the spotlight again.
In an interview with the Charlotte Observer, Johnson says that former vice presidential nominee Geraldine Ferraro was right.
If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position," she said, just before the resulting firestorm forced her to step down as an adviser to Obama rival Hillary Clinton.
"What I believe Geraldine Ferraro meant (is) if you take a freshman senator from Illinois called ‘Jerry Smith’ and he says I’m going to run for president, would he start off with 90 percent of the black vote? And the answer is, probably not. Would he also start out with the excitement of starting out as something completely different? Probably not. He would just be a freshmen senator …
"Geraldine Ferraro said it right. The problem is Geraldine Ferraro is white. This campaign has such a hair trigger on anything racial. It is almost impossible for anybody to say anything."

He is black so I guess he has a right to say it. I am sure Mr. Johnson had a much harder road to the top.

Jake and ABC, please get this out in every media outlet. People need to wake up and think rationaly about who is best prepared to lead our country.

Bob Johnson owes the Clinton’s much. If Obama has prostituted himself to change, Johnson has to the Clintons

I wish someone could explain to me why mentioning Obama’s drug use is a faux pas that requires an apology? How is it that there are so many of Obama’s issues that no one’s allowed to mention without being vilified by the media, and chided by Obama?
As far as I can tell NOTHING is off the table where Clinton is concerned – they’ll attack her child, bring up her husband affairs renlentlessly, her clothing, her hairstyle, her laugh, anything. I’m pretty sure they’ll be commenting on her bathroom habits before it’s done, but don’t mention Obama’s drug use, his pastor, his gaffes, cause that’s just being vicious. Am I the only one who finds this baffling and suspect?

Bob Johnson is nothing more than a Black Clinton lapdog If he knew anything, he’d know Obama didn’t start out with anything near 90% of the black vote.
Posted by: MC | April 15, 2008, 12:21 am 12:21 am
bob johnson speaks the truth. for that, he will again be vilified.
obama himself said he wouldn’t be where he is if he weren’t black. it’s ok for him to say it, but not for anyone else.
tavis smiley had to quit his radio show due to death threats from african-americans mad that he didn’t toe the line. wonder if bob johnson will receive death threats?
sadly, not only will bob johnson be vilified, but hillary will be blamed. and the press will be all over it, to take the focus off obama’s snobgate problem.

If he were Jerry Smith, an inspiring, charismatic white freshman senator from Ill, he would probably get a lot more than 30% of the white vote in Southern states.

Ferraro is RIGHT … Obama wouldn’t have done this well if he hadn’t being BLACK ….
If he had not being BLACK, he would definitely have not won 90% of Black votes ..
Except for about 10 – 20 % Blacks, the Blacks are voting in mass …
So why should Ferraro apologize … ? It is a FACT …
Good for you, Ferraro … !!

“Black vote” “White vote” “Female vote” – can’t they just be voters? Do we constantly have to deal with all this nonsense? It amazes me how enraged people, who constantly refer to what these black people think and those black people think, get when someone who is black speaks up in a way they dont’ like.
Look at Tavis Smiley – his family got death threats because he criticized Obama for not attending the State of the Black Union event in N.O.
This gets sillier and more contradictory by the moment.*rollseyes*

Bob Johnson is the founder of the most degrading cable station ever. It doesn’t matter what he has to say. It’s a shame that in order for it to start being “cleaned-up” ownership had to transfer to a white-owned company. I don’t like Bob very much or care for his opinion…on anything.

Why is it that Obama is treated with kid gloves? If he is questioned about his record, or lack of, his camp cries foul or
or says the questionaire is racist or blames clinton. I am getting so tired of the blatant media bias for Obama. As for this story, sadly Mr. Johnson will probably be receiving hate mail for his objective and honest thoughts he is portraying.
Posted by: treading water | April 15, 2008, 12:39 am 12:39 am
Bob Johnson doesn’t even have his facts right. Obama didn’t “start off with 90 percent of the black vote”. He only got that much (or almost that much) after Bob Johnson and other Clinton surrogates got a lot of black voters angry at Hillary (and Bill) Clinton.
Posted by: Jeff | April 15, 2008, 12:40 am 12:40 am
the sad part of this is the black people were told to help obama get into the white house
but obama has not said or shown that he is going to do anything to enhance the quality of their lives.

Furthermore, Clinton started off with 90 percent of the black vote. hell, I was gonna vote for her too. Most blacks did not think that Obama stood a chance, and Bill was highly respected among blacks (He was elected into the black Hall of Fame in Arkansas). Obama-with his name and heritage alone was/is at a disadvantage…but he’s a good speaker. His speeches put him where he is right now (among whites and blacks).

Obamaknew – TELL ME ABOUT IT! I was on staff at a political newsgroup website, and the owner got so Obacrazy, he broke his own rules to endorse Obama and sports Obama’s logo on the site, not like anyone in the wide world gives two hoots about and endorsement from that insignificant website. So, I quit, and he pretty much ran off all the Clinton supporters and conservative – talk about a lack of challenging discussion. I think the guy might set himself on fire if Obama doesn’t win.
And OpEdNews – Jeezz – that place is an Obasewer. They stopped publishing my pieces, relegating them to my “diary” section, for no reason that I can tell, other than they weren’t pro-Obama.
Does our society still believe in free speech, a free press, and elections, or are we just going to crown Obama our new monarch or something? It’s pretty scary really, and it’s not like Bush hasn’t left us in a scary enough situation.
Just keep your fingers crossed I guess, cause I for one feel pretty helpless against the onslaught.

I agree with Mr. Johnson, they made it into a race issue, Jesse Jackson Jr. said “where were clinton’s tears for katrina”…she spoke out and yelled at bush to do something… oabam’s people showed the wright’s videos in SC, Charlie rangel said so… OBAMA used the race card FIRST!!!!!!

jgaw: True, good speeches cannot run the white house.
However, you are underestimating the power of being able to attract people to common issues and motivate them to act.
Hillary and Obama pretty much believe the same things, but Hillary is too concerned with defeating the “evil” republicans to the point that if elected, they won’t be willing to work with her.
Posted by: in2itively | April 15, 2008, 12:51 am 12:51 am
I am not sure if Mr. Johnson is helping Mrs. Clinton with this remark. Certainly, this would divert the media attention from Mr. Obama’s negatives to Mrs. Clinton’s “evil and cruel” nature.
Both the democratic candidates have flaws and strength. Both certainly will have an agenda that will be kept to themselves. It is up to the voters to figure what the untold agenda would be. But if the press is biased it will be nearly impossible to arrive at an informed decision.

And what the heck are DU, MoveOn.org, etc. doing endorsing one democrat over another in this primary? Talk about divisive! How can this possibly make sense?

So, Andrew Sullivan can write a piece about how Obama’s face will change the world – simply because he’s dark-skinned, and John Kerry can say Obama will heal our divide with Islamic nations because “he is a black man” – and that’s not racist, but if Geraldine Ferraro intimates that Obama’s race has been an advantage for him which it has – she’s a RACIST?

This story will not gloss over Obama’s remarks about small town folk, nor will it hide his arrogance. The longer this campaign goes on-the more we will see and hear the truth come from both Obamas’ mouths. They are revealing their true mindset and it is not pretty. This man is unfit to be the leader of our country.

I liked the comment made that mentioned that just half a year ago, everyone was saying that Barack wasn’t “black-enough” and wouldn’t be able to attract black voters. Black “so-called” leaders were saying it. Clinton was the favored candidate. Then Obama started winning ‘white votes’…and their attitudes changed.
Posted by: in2itively | April 15, 2008, 1:31 am 1:31 am
Yes it will Treading – yes it will. They’ve glossed over everything else, and they’re already glossing over this by saying everyone’s being unfair and mean to Obama.
Somehow, a whole lot of people are still voting for Clinton, but will there be enough and will it even matter? They’ve managed to justify taking from her two states in which she was heavily favored on a technicality, so I don’t think she’ll win even if she does get more votes.
It’s a done deal I fear. It seems the media is selling us this sham of an election as sure as the media in Iran sells their sham elections to the populus.
When I think of all the people who have given their lives, are giving their lives, for our freedom . . . it’s just soul crushing, isn’t it?
Posted by: Teri B. | April 15, 2008, 1:35 am 1:35 am
Bob Jonhson’s criticism of Obama sounds like pure jealousy. He does not represent the “black vote” or the African American electorate; therefore he is purely speaking for himself.
He needs to completely retire from the glare of the media. His day in the spotlight is over, so a few comments now and then gives him an emotional boost. Give it a rest BJ.
I wish we could have a rest from all of this verbal backwash and let the remaining primaries take place with less media hyper-attention and self-appointed “I am so important personages” chiming in because some media outlet has the ability to give meaningless words center stage.
Posted by: truth | April 15, 2008, 1:41 am 1:41 am
Mr. Johnson’s assessment, like Ms. Ferraro’s, fails to take into account that Sen. Clinton had every advantage going into this primary season: 250 Superdelegates…the name recognition, the national profile of being the first lady…the title of presumptive nominee awaiting coronation…but in this process, the “junior Senator from Illinois” has managed to galvanize the Democratic Party, bring about excitement and interest in the issues that affect America, and the world, and has managed to be the front-runner for over two months. By disparaging Sen. Obama for being where he is by saying it’s because he’s black, is to discount all of these triumphs and moreso speaks volumes about Sen. Clinton’s inability to seal the nomination. The last time I checked, the only people voting for and contributing to Sen. Obama’s campaign were not blacks.

And if Hillary had not been a white woman who was married to an ex-president she wouldn’t be where she is eighter. I really don’t get the point unless the Clinton campaign has suggested Johnson try to create further division. Hillary has made this about race and gender and now, by joining McCain she has made it a betrayal to the Democrats. She would do the same thing to our country if given the power.

Not only will the coverage of this election be criticized as an example of irresponsible journalism in journalism classes of the future but the Psychology of Women classes will have enough factual data for a lifetime. Anyone who says gender is not an issue, in this primary. is grossly mistaken.
I disconnected our satelite television months ago due to the outrageous, unfair coverage of the primaries. I found myself so angry everytime I would turn on the evening news to find yet another Hillary bashing minute and a glowing five minute report of Obama’s momentum, massive crowds, unifying speeches….. The glow in the reporters/analysts faces made my stomach turn. Media manipulation at it’s peak.
It is such a critical, critical time in our country to make the RIGHT decision about who is most capable to start on day ONE.

Per Barack’s own words from an article published in the Chicago Tribune on 6/26/05 by Jeff Zeleny entitled “When it comes to race, Obama makes his point–with subtlety”.
These comment from Barack pertained to his Senate race in Illinois.
Obama acknowledges, with no small irony, that he benefits from his race.
If he were white, he once bluntly noted, he would simply be one of nine freshmen senators, almost certainly without a multimillion-dollar book deal and a shred of celebrity. Or would he have been elected at all?
Now, if Barack Obama believed this to be true in 2005 concerning his US Senate race in 2004, it is very fair for someone to believe these same comments to be true in 2008. What makes this election any different than an election that was not even 4 years ago? Geraldine Ferraro basically said the exact same thing. Shame on the Obama spin to this story, and to his supporters who have maligned Geraldine Ferraro for saying something that Barack had said about himself in the past.

If “Jerry Smith” had dedicated his life to helping the poor, being the first anything President of Harvard Review, been as inteligent as Obama then perhaps he would be where Obama is today. For him to imply that this is a racial issue is laughable and shows his lack of inteligence. I guess ALL politicans were just born? and destined? This man is a racist and an untruthful one at that.

I was a student of the University of Chicago and knew people who were taught by Senator Obama, and they all tell me he is who he appears to be.
Hillary would not have the democratic coalitions she has without Bill Clinton. Obama EARNED his share of the democratic coalition and built his own machine. Hillary Clinton is sitting on a pile of cash and goodwill from her husband, hardly any of which she earned. She has to remind everyone frequently that she’s a “fighter”. But when she was lobbying for corporate giants, Obama was on the ground with people who lost their jobs.
I really wish Barbara Boxer or Diane Feinstein ran for president. They have never cast themselves as a victim in their Senate races nor would they have to rely on their husbands’ record.
by the way, Bob Johnson is responsible for the POISONING of african american society by ignoring intelligent commentators and artists on BET, and favoring gangster rap, material culture and sexualizing black women in the most obscene way.
Obama is where he is because of who he is and what he’s done even if it is a small record. There is a consistency of trajectory of his character, writings, conversations, votes, etc. Call him liberal or elitist. You cannot say he doesnt truly believe in what he says. People on the ground who wont vote for him (even because he is black) all think he is a good man with a good heart. Ive been canvassing for Senator Obama and this is the basic reception I get. He has at least earned their respect and trust and that’s how he built coalitions in Illinois which is among the most diverse groups of people, urban, rural, ethnic, poor, rich, white, black, brown, etc. At least let him have that.

Anyone who tells me a white duplicate of Barack Obama would still be in this race is LYING or ignorant to identity politics.
Even John Kerry said he would bring people together …..because he is african american…………
Obama cant use the race card against the Clintons if he is white. African americans would still have their ‘black president’.
Clinton would have the african american vote . In fact, all Obama would be is a non experienced John Edwards.
Clinton would have won the nomination by now.

The so called great speeches have been debunked as teleprompter driven. When he is without the prompter, he gives horrible speeches with halting language and fumbling actions through his notes. Perhaps he took a course from TJ Walker or any other media guru who trains newscasters to learn to use teleprompters. In any case, his speeches are empty “preaching”.

Obama has held elected office for 11 years (four more than Hillary). Obama sponsored over 820 bills while serving in the Illinois senate (serving 8 years, from 1996-2004). He introduced 233 bills regarding Healthcare reform, 125 bills regarding Poverty and Public Assistance, 112 Crime fighting bills, 97 Economic bills, 62 Education bills, 60 Human Rights and Anti-discrimination bills, 21 Ethics bills, 20 Environmental bills, 15 Gun Control bills, 6 Veteran Affairs bills, and many, many others. He authored the most sweeping ethics reform bill passed into Illinois law in over 20 years. He sponsored a law enhancing tax credits for low-income workers, negotiated welfare reform and promoted increased subsidies for child care. Obama also led the passage of legislation mandating videotaping of homicide interrogations, and a law to monitor racial profiling by requiring police to record the race of drivers they stopped.
In 2002 Obama spoke out publicly against the war in Iraq, saying he does not oppose all war, just dumb wars, and proceeded to accurately predict the quagmire of Iraq.
Obama was elected to the United States senate in 2004. In his first year (before he decided to run for president) he authored 152 bills, and co-sponsored another 427. These included the Coburn-Obama government Transparency Act of 2006 (signed into law by Bush), The Lugar-Obama initiatives (working with republican, Richard Lugar) aimed at nuclear non-proliferation and conventional weapons threat reduction. He is one of only 2 lawmakers sponsoring a campaign finance reform bill that currently sits in the senate. There are 890 bills in Obama’s name since he entered the Senate. He has Cosponsored 1096.
Obama currently serves on the Senate Committees for Foreign Relations; Health, Education, Labor and Pensions; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and Veterans’ Affairs. He has a degree in International Relations, a Law degree, and taught constitutional law for 10 years. On Obama’s website you can read detailed information regarding his positions on all the current major issues.

I just read the post by Julie in which she lists all Obama’s bills/legislation since his elections. Looks like it is mostly freebies/handouts which cost workers and taxpayers their money for people who are irresponsible like having babies they can’t afford or getting into drugs or crime. My question is: Where are the new jobs to the area and how many people’s lives are improved? Working to support yourself and family is necessary if one is raise himself out of proverty and into a digified life. It is far too easy for people not to be responsible with all the liberal freebies/handouts. When the first immigrants came to the USA, it was work or starve and people were more resourceful then.

Both Bob Johnson and Geraldine Feraro are correct in their assessment. He even choose his church because he knew the church members would vote for him and the district he represented is 65/70% black. He has definitely used his race when it was to his advantage and it got him elected. His oratory skills are good and he made people believe in his ability to lead. But did he really improve his district with jobs, etc.?? The answer is no, it economically worse off now. He does not possess the intergity, judgement or experience necessary to guide this country to better times. I will vote for Senator Clinton; someone who better understands the average American family’s hopes, dreams and needs. I also consider her to be much more honest and compassionate.

There’s nothing remarkable about what Johnson is saying here. Obama’s young, good looking, and black and that helps him with black voters and with voters looking for something fresh. There’s nothing wrong with black voters and other voters being excited about a charasmatic, smart, fresh leader and there’s nothing wrong with women and other voters who are likewise looking for something to break the old paradigm being excited about a smart, tough as nails female candidate. What’s wrong is when voters **only** vote for someone because of their skin color or gender. I don’t think Obama, who hasn’t been on the national stage for very long, would’ve generated so much excitement among black voters if he were white because he’s an unknown quantity and lots of groups regardless of race are slow to accept someone who is unknown to them and doesn’t have a record to allay their skepticism. His race helped break that barrier with voters where a similar white candidate would’ve had trouble building trust against an opponent who had a long established connection with the black community but it doesn’t take away from the fact that the Senator is smart and talented. The fact that he’s black and vying to break a historic barrier generates enthusiasm in a lot of different circles and let’s be honest Obama said it in one of the debates when he said you’ve got the first black contender, the first woman contender, and John (referencing John Edwards). In the face of so much history, poor Edwards couldn’t catch any fire and he too was a charismatic, and good-looking one term Senator much like Obama. Edwards was way more progressive policy wise than either Obama or Clinton but the upscale progressive side of the party favored Obama from the start.
The problem for Obama is that while his race helps him greatly in the primaries and with the media it also hurts him in the general. He’s definitely been able to build a coalition of black and upscale voters that no candidate has been able to bring together before (historically black voters have voted the same within the party as their white working/middle class counterparts) but that coalition is a weak one in the general because it is a coalition of liberal voters (McGovern/Dukakis voters) and African American voters. Both groups are minorities within the general electorate and his race and liberal stances will work against him when he tries to reach out to voters outside his coalition. Also, the GOP is not afraid to use 527s that will play on the disconnect he already has with some white voters and drive them further apart should Obama get the nom.

Not only will his base be inadequate in the GE but also the fact that half of the states he has won are red states and he will not carry them-those states will vote red in November..

BET is not about educating, entertaining, etc. or even showing positive representations of blacks. It is a twentyfour hour STEPIN FETCHIT courtesy VIACOM and CBS. I recall during the early days of AIDS the arm twisting we had to do to make it address the issue. The resulting special wasn’t the most accurate, but it was about all we could get. And when Ed Gordon left, we knew the credibility left with him.

Bob Johnson and Ferraro are correct.. it’s facts. Barack Obama said this same thing to the Chicago Tribune back in 2005. What’s the point here? Obama has admitted it was the truth himself.

Julie you neglect the fact that Sen. Obama has only authored one bill that has become law. The list you put forth is misleading. Also why is it that you don’t include S.2433? This is Obama’s Global Poverty Act of 2007. Is it because this bill will make the US subservient to the UN and shows Obama’s extremists views? or do you just choose to ignore this because you just beleive whaat your guy is feeding you? Do some real research on your candidate! His connections to Rezko, Ayers, Auchi, etc. and now what he says when he thinks the public isn’t listening…stop, look, listen, do some research, and then make an informed decision.

This is stupid.. It seems very easy for Bob to forget that prior to Iowa, Hillary was picking up most of the Black community votes.. And, the reason for the Black community to vote for Obama is not prejudice but pride! The same way New York voted for Hillary or Illinoi for Obama! Now extending the same argument, one could argue, Hillary would be no where were it not for Bill and the woman votes! If you these either arguments, the point as a whole is moot – every politian starts with a base!

This election cycle political discourse has degraded into nonsense. Largely because the Clinton camp has held on way longer than is reasonable and are grasping at anything to turn this thing around… ANYTHING! It is ridiculous. And the press feeds off it because a longer election cycle means more coverage, more sponsors, more money! What a dysfunctional relationship! This non-sensical hysteria has finally reached its apogee I’m afraid and voters like myself just can’t stand it anymore. Are Americans really this stupid? Can one not talk about bitterness and the fact that politicians have used social issues as distractions over the last decades without such irrational manufactured outrage? Let’s talk about real problems people. When a woman who has lived in a bubble for most of her adult life and has earned 109 million dollars and a man married to a beer heiress with 8 houses can label a man who took his Ivy League degree to work as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago and became part of that community an “elitist”, while the ELITE media on the left and right pile on it is totally surreal… please tell me this is a dream…..

What a horrible and hypocrite country America is at times!
For the first time in history a black man at this stage of the primaries is the clear frontrunner in the Dem nomination race. On one and the same day, for the reason that he is black and has a less common name
1. A Rep. Congressman refers to him as “that boy”
2. A Dem opponent tells America that he is ONLY in the race BECAUSE he is black
3. A top AP man confuses his name with that of the USA’s Enemy No. 1 again
American, shame on you! Shame on you.
Barack Obama was listed by the New Statesman as one of the 10 people alive today “who can change the world”. And that was 3 years ago.
Yes, he can. He the smartest, most decent, most committed and most uplifting candidate in the Presidential race. He got the best blueprint for America. The rest is politics as usual, special interests and big money lobbyists, the Washington status quo.
BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT!!!

I disagree if Jerry Smith started his campaign with a vision and hope and a strong desire to make america and its government better for its people ,he would have this black vote and yes probably 90% of other black votes. This is why Obama is in the position he is in.Hillary Clinton is a blatant opportunist who will do or say anything to win. She is not for the people of america she is in this only for her own selfish desire for political power. I do agree with part of Ferraro’s satement in a sense,if Obama was white he probably would be the nominee by now.
Obama 08!
Yes We Can!

If he were white, he once bluntly noted, he would simply be one of nine freshmen senators, almost certainly without a multimillion-dollar book deal and a shred of celebrity. Or would he have been elected at all?

Barack Obama said the same thing about himself in the Chicago Tribune: “If he were white, he once bluntly noted, he would simply be one of nine freshmen senators, almost certainly without a multimillion-dollar book deal and a shred of celebrity. Or would he have been elected at all?”

Merle7,
dream on…if bho was not black he would be nowhere. the vast majority of the black vote has no idea his position on anything except being black.
if anyone is an opportunist and in it for selfish reasons it is bho. bho is RUNNING, and counting, on his blackness to move him through the primary. he knows no one will touch his race or they will be called racist(just like he and his campaign, and supporters do). Selfish? oh yea! what less then ist term senator would ever be arrogant enough to thing they were ready for the presidency?
and again, hope is a feeling…it never solved a single problem.

What’s the use of all this?
Where would Hillary be if she hadn’t been married to Bill, a former Arkansas Governor and United States President?
Where would McCain be if his airplane hadn’t been shot down in Vietnam, if he hadn’t had the opportunity to sing his own war hero songs all the time; or if he hadn’t left his poor first wife for a daughter of the Rich and Powerful?
Why arent’t ALL black men as succesful as Barack if blackness is the ticket to succes in America?
Why all the distractions from the issues themselves and the candidates’ agenda for America?
There is only ONE reason for Bob Johson’s remark: Barack Obama has beaten crown princess Hillary Clinton in the nomination race, and the hillbillies can’t stand Obama for that reason. They are bad and sore losers; that’s all there’s to it.

Uh oh, there they go again. Racism as usual. Black voters have no idea of the issues. Shame on you, pp. Look in the mirror and check your conscience.
What a revealing year this is. In 2008, the year in which Barack Obama won the DEM nomination, racism raised its ugly head again in the United States of America.

Would it have mattered if he (Obama) was white and is in the position that he is today? Would it have been an ISSUE at all? It is outrageous and un-uniting when people in authority that are suppose to do all that they can to unite all and sundry preaches divisiveness. Bob Johnson and Ferraro are suppose to know better. I am deeply disappointed by them.

LOL!
It wasn’t Obama who started off with the large majority of the black vote, it was Hillary Clinton! As everybody knows.
And as Johnson no doubt knows better than anyone else, for he himself, together will Bill and his Jesse comparison, made such a fine contribution to her losing that segment of the American vote. Haha.
Now he’s trying to make her lose the last remaining 10%, so that the Clinton campaign will be able to explain her loss by saying that a full 100% of the black vote has been going to Obama ALL the time…
What a joke. One must be pretty dumb to believe this guy.

I guess what Bob Johnson want to say is that himself could already have been America’s first black President, had it not been for his much too common American name.
That certainly makes sense, doesn’t it?
Posted by: Harriet | April 15, 2008, 6:44 am 6:44 am
The black vote at this point is ridiculous. Clearly blacks are being racist in their voting. Many of them can’t articulate a damn thing Obama stands for except that he is 50% black. Unfortunately they have thrown in the garbage, Kings word of judge by character not color. Not only is Obama doing well because of his color with blacks, he also doing well because of his color with whites. There are so many white voters, who are literally tripping over themselve to prove they are not racist by voting for Obama. These whites have foolishly been suckered by their deep seated white guilt over slavery, that they could care less if the black guy they are voting for is a racist himself and could care less if he totally lacks experience to do the job. I guess you can call it affirmative action voting!
Posted by: very concerned | April 15, 2008, 6:49 am 6:49 am
As an Obama supporter I believe that Mr. Johnson is both right and wrong. He is right because in the normality of things, a no name freshman senator would have a hair’s chance of becoming president. On the other hand, Lincoln did it, and he wasn’t even a Senator. he was a Congressman in the House of Representatives representing Illinois (*Gasp*)..
Mr. Johnson is wrong because when you look at every poll taken before January 3, 2008, the date of the Iowa Caucuses, Hillary Clinton had the bulk of the black support. That shifted AFTER Obama won Iowa. It is important to note that even though Iowa is 95% white, Obama probably benefited from the multitude of people still in the race. He won Iowa with 38% of the vote. That means a huge majority of Iowans voted against Obama. You take take that any way you like, but the fact remains that Obama did not win Iowa with the Black vote. He won Iowa because of his message and his political and organizing talents. African Americans then followed.
In conclusion, I would say that Obama would not be where he is today if Hillary Clinton had won Iowa.

Barack Obama would never have been able to run for the highest ofice in America had he not been black. I heard on a call in talk show all blacks stick together called in by a black person. I am not a racist. I have black friends. However, I feel if we had known all about Obama before he started, he would never have gotten this far. The Jeramiah Wright story would have ended it for me. I am a Hillary supporter and beleive she will win. I know she is the best candidate.

I’m hearing this crazy rumor on some of the boards that Gore and Carter are going to team up (double team maybe) to either offer a premature endorsement of OBama or speak with Clinton to get out of the race now.
I can’t believe it’s true, but if something like that ever did happen TO SHORTCIRCUIT THE ABILITY OF VOTERS TO DECIDE THESE PRIMARY CONTESTS then not only will the Democrats lose the presidential election in November, the Democrats will be saying good bye to their majorities in Congress.
First thing I’ll do, is start brushing up on my congressman’s republican opponent. We also have a Senate race this year in Massachusetts. Well, I’ve already made my decision in that race. Anyone but Kerry!!!
Let the voters decide!!!!!
Posted by: s. valenti | April 15, 2008, 7:00 am 7:00 am
Natalie,
Your “Wright” comment is fair enough, but I disagree with you. Abraham Lincoln was a freshman Congressman at the time he was elected President. Our constitution does not give an “experience” requirement for running for president. Also keep in mind that Blacks did NOT vote for Alan Keys (a black man) both times he ran for president. Blacks also showed Al Sharpton to the door when he ran for president. Clinton had the majority of black support before Iowa. Obama’s appeal to whites turned the heads of Blacks and they took a closer look at Obama.
regarding rev. Wright, blacks would NOT have been offended by this. people outside of the black community do not understand black churches. That is why Obama gave the speech that he did. On paper, what Wright said was very bad. But when you look at the bigger racial division that exost in the country, Wright becomes a bigger issue, worthy of discussion.
Posted by: Democrats United | April 15, 2008, 7:04 am 7:04 am
Wow S. Valenti,
Talk about bitter. Are you not voting for John Kerry in the Senate Race because he supports Obama? Well, to each his or her own I guess.
As far as letting the voters decide, you only say that because this is the first year this whole delegate mess was made a big deal of. ALL OF THE VOTERS DID NOT DECIDE IN THE 2004 PRIMARY because the dems had the good since to drop out and support the leader after Super Tuesday, which was John Kerry. All of the voters did not decide in 2000 because the Bradley dropped out after it was clear he couldn’t beat Gore. The reason this happened like that is because historically, the longer a nomination fight continues, the less of a chance the party has of winning. The democratic elders like Carter, who was part of a very long nomination fight himself, and Gore know this all too well. That’s why they want to see an end to this NOW! They want to win.
Posted by: Democrats United | April 15, 2008, 7:13 am 7:13 am
“Let the voters decide!!!!!”
They already did, to the extent that Hillary can no longer win the nomination. Even if she would bow out now, people in the remaining states would still be able to vote for her to express their support of her candidacy.
But since she can’t win this race anymore, why stay in it as a candidate and spend millions on hurting the DEM frontrunner and winner? Hard to understand.
I foresee a financial disaster for the Clinton campaign this month; in two weeks of April she has not even been able to raise 2 million for PA TV ads online! She is spending millions however on airing them. And the debts, the unpaid bills are piling up. What’s the rationale here?
I look forward to Day 1 of the Democrats’ full focus on McCain and the prevention of the 3rd term and even more disastrous GOP Presidency. Small town America btw is desperately looking forward to that as well. We need to unite, as Democrats, and fight.
So please let Gore and Carter convince her that she’d better bow out now than fall very hard and deep later, in the public disgrace of a bankrupt campaign.

Obama’s race has certainly been a factor.
The media has been in the tank for Obama from the very beginning. They haven’t criticized or questioned him, and I attribute much of that to the color of his skin.
The last time I looked out my door, it wasn’t 1860, so the Lincoln argument doesn’t hold much weight with me. Lincoln had the Civil War, but when you compare that to the mass of national, international, and global issues the next president will have to deal with, all things aren’t equal.
JFK was a decorated war hero with 14 years in Congress when he ran for president.
Obama highjacks our most revered national heroes – Lincoln, JFK, MLK, Bobby – to lend cache to his too-thin resume. It’s disgusting and people are fools to fall for it.

Memories of Obama’s recent racial stereotype of the ‘typical White person’ are still fresh. Add to this now his view of the ‘typical small town person.’ Obama is quoted as disparaging residents of small towns in Pennsylvania as being “like a lot of small towns in the Midwest” where “it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
Obama is unapologetic, even dissing of voters in Florida and Michigan one has to wonder what groups of Americans he really respects?
Racist wife, Michelle, saying she was proud of America “for the first time” only because of her husband’s presidential run.
Obama explained he doesn’t wear an American flag lapel pin or hold his hands to his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance because it is a substitute for patriotism,
Obama confirms his own moral obliviousness and he seems to have disdain for those who are troubled by his own unwillingness to break with The Great White hater Rev Wright

Wright continues his Obama supported attacks on non-blacks Wright states Jesus death on the cross was a public lynching Italian style.
Obamas senate record shows he infact did support the war voted against bringing America’s troops home, voted for war appropriations giving our money to Halliburton and Blackwater, voted with Bush/Chaney latest bit of posturing S433 to suspend any troop withdrawal, if not suspended, keeps the troops in Iraq for a long time to come.

Look at how the news is reluctant to show anything about race. Rev. Wright appears w/o the sound on and the uproar over bitter remarks when bitter or religion or guns isn’t the issue.
Is this Obama calling the people in small towns that don’t vote for him bigots? “antipathy toward people who aren’t like them”
Seems like it to me, I’m just curious why the press is on the guns and religion part of his statement and avoiding the racist part. The press needs to get a little backbone.
He has simply enjoyed too much success too soon and is suffering from a minor messiah complex much like you see in rock stars.
Obama in that recording was responding to a question by those California folks asking why those small towns weren’t supporting him…..
Obama was faced with a segment of voters that didn’t rush to form a pep rally for him, so he figured there MUST be something seriously wrong with THEM

That’s the problem with having a black candidate for President. Any time anyone criticizes him, it’s considered a racial slur. The Obama camp has to come to terms with the fact that if he is running for President of the US, he has to run like he will be representating all people not just blacks. If he keeps on this path, he will alienate white, hispanics, asians, etc. and lose the election.

Would Senator Clinton be in her position if she wasn’t named “Clinton”? We are all in our positions by our destinies, fortunes and luck.
No, Senator Clinton is in her position because she has taken poor advice from those who purport to serve her. To think that a black man with a non-Anglo name is an advantage is rightly ludicrous. If “Jerry Smith” organized as well, raised as much money and spoke as timely and eloquently as Senator Obama after the Iowa caucus – he would already be the nominee. And to imply that the millions of white voters who support Senator Obama are blinded apologists is inane.

Ohio Knows What Obama’s true allegiance is
Primary Night he got a court order to re-open polls in Ohio, 3 polling places in Cleveland, due to weather. All 3 were in the highest population of black area.
All of north ohio had an ice storm, he did not re-open any other polling places.
Sheer discrimination in Action.
A man God Damn America, He called you Racist for getting upset about someone Damning Your country.
Then came back and Forgave the man who was unpatriotic Damning this country.
Your still a racist though.
His web site, categorizes everyone, Breaks you up into groups, Labels. List all except a white man.
So it is Quiet evident, if he becomes president, That you can not Disagree or get upset with a black person. You will live under your Category. Or be Condemned for being a racist.

Why is everything about Obama running for president is about him being black? He’s winning because he’s black, he’s gotten this far because he’s black bla, bla, bla. It seems that everything about his success is centered around him being black rather than him being a good candidate.
What about the white people voting for McCain because he’s white and because they don’t want a black man or a woman in office.
And besides who can be a worst president than George Bush.

I swear, people’s memories are frighteningly short. John Edwards was elected to the Senate in 1998. He began laying the groundwork for a 2004 run in 2000 (couldn’t run then because Al Gore was the incumbent VP) by giving speeches in Iowa and talking to insiders about his future prospects. He was also on Gore’s short list to be his VP–after just two years in the Senate.
Last time I checked, John Edwards was white.

RE: GEOFF DAVIS
I guess no one in the mainstream media wants to discuss this. A grown white man, Kentucky REP Geoff Davis calling Potential Future President ” Boy”! We sure do NEED TO TALK ABOUT RACE! That Speech and that quote was greeted with laughter and applause. Shame on the people who attended that gathering. They too owe him an apology. I guess with people like him and his type, we deserve 100 years of ignorance and bigotry in this country and you all amde such a big deal of Barack’s Pastor and his “bitter” speech. Shame on the Media for tip toeing around this issue. I guess it is okay to call a “elitist” Black candidate raised by a single white woman who was more educated and more progressive than 80% of the population in the USA Today, a “BOY”. I am so digusted with this, Hillary will say anything to get elected and maybe she could be McCain’s running mate…sounds like a republican! The media should be ashamed of their one sided approach.

it’s ironic everyone call’s rev wright crazy-but rev wright talked about guy’s like johnson–who use black people for power and money–this guy attack for using drugs when he was younger and is supporting the clinton’s–i wonder if he still was involved with BET and he was receiving money from the network he would never make these comments. What we really need to ask ourselves is why is this man attacking obama–lets face it the clinton first attack obama saying he is a fairytale–then they said this young man–then he is a muslim-then he wears tribal outfits when he is at home–then he is a black panther following the black muslim party–then is a crazy black man in a cult(trinity church) now they say this young man, muslim, african, black panther, cultist is really this harvard elitist who is out of touch with working folks–what next he really isn’t black he wears makeup so he can get the black vote–who knows the clinton’s will say anything to get in the whitehouse-afterall hillary wants to make 50 million on speeches also–yeah know it’s sexist for bill to make all the money–it is hillary time so step aside obama and mccain this is hillary time. so what if she lies does’nt everyone–she is really just a fighter and all fighters lie and cheat right?

One only has to read these comments to realize that race is a factor – one that is working against Obama!
If Obama were not black, he would already be confirmed as the Democratic candidate!
If Hillary was not a Clinton, she would no longer be in the race!

In an age of identity politics (Is there any other kind of politics?), once Obama became known as a viable candidate he had the Black vote.
Thanks for enlightening us, Capital Obvious.
What is truly amazing is the press has let Obama call the Hillary campaign racist for stating this obvious fact of life. It is also amazing that Hillary is running nearly even with Obama in the face of a press, and a left wing establishment, that simply hate the Clintons.

Bob Johnson is right. Obama gets away with calling the Clinton’s racist over statements with what the media calls “hidden meanings” Hell I can take anything and make it racist if I wanted to. The thing is Obama calls another Democrat a racist over “hidden meanings” and no one says that is wrong to do but Obama calls small town America gun toting, bible thumping bigots and Hillary calls him on it and she is the one damaging the party? I think calling another Democrat and a former Democratic President and Vice Presidential candidate in Geraldine Ferraro a racist is a little bit more divisive then anything Hillary has done. Obama needs to pay for the way he has run his campaign.

We (Black Americans) have been trying to get the NAACP or other groups to do something about him (Bob Johnson) for years, but nothing has happened. So anything said by him has NO VALIDITY and further illustrates Clinton’s disconnect with Black Americans.

Here is the truth. We live in an age of identity politics. Hillary gets the majority of the White vote because she is White and the majority of women because she is a woman. Obama gets the majority of Black voters because he is Black. (If it is not about him being Black how come Obama is not getting 90% of the White Democratic vote in addition to 90% of the Black vote?)
What does this mean for the general election if Obama is the candidate? It means that in the general McCain is going to get the majority of the White vote, Obama will once again get 90% of the Black vote, and because there are far fewer Blacks in the country than Whites Obama will lose.
I do not see how people can deny this simple fact of demographics.
Hillary has the only chance to win because there are more women than men who vote, and she will carry a majority of women.

Obama won Iowa, which set the tone for the downfall of the Clinton campaign, as the result of a very simple seed. Two questions that were posed to Clinton in commentary of the Des Moines Register in early-mid July 07 in response to her address on her Iraq withdrawal plan.
1. What can be done to lessen the impact of ‘big interests’ on campaign financing, as this is a conflict of interest and more should be done to find ways that average American people can support who they chose so the people’s voice comes through.
2. What would Clinton do to improve America’s relationship with the rest of the world, even including Middle East countries. Did foreign policy require a critical review?
On the first one – within a week or two, both Edwards and Obama were firing at her on it. Because she had already taken money from such sources but they had not she could do nothing but defend the position.
Obama 1, Edwards 1, Clinton 0
On the second question – a very similar question was asked of Obama – I think we can all remember Hillary blasting him as naive. Edwards didn’t take up the issue – well, if he did I didn’t notice it. But Obama stuck his guns on the topic and developed his articulation of why. He turned it around.
Obama 2, Edwards 1, Clinton 0
That pretty much reflects the Iowa outcomes.

here we go again–a shameless bob johnson is trying to scare white people as he takes his millions that he made off black people nice start a net called the black entertainment network make millions then back the clinton’s hoping to get something from them and low and behold here come’s this obama guy who doesn’t know that he should wait his time so hillary can be president and maybe later obama can run–this guy will say anything so the clinton’s can win. the real story here is why is a black man who made millions off black america trying to take down a black american–the answer is he is getting something from the clinton’s and the bottom line is he is selfish–also i guess he believes that a black man is not smart enough to be president–after all john edwards had less legislative experience than obama also obama has been an elected office since the 90,s hillary has only be in the senate since 2000–afterall would barbara bush be considered experience or nancy reagan–what makes a first lady experience to be president? this is the real double standard–if obama is really the harvard elitist then i guess his problem is not his intelligence. i would rather have a smart president than one has average intelligence like bush and reagan–i mean we are voting for president not the guy i won’t to have a beer with–in fact i won’t my president to be sober and not tired at 11:00 pm and being 60 so it’s okay that her memory is not so great.

PPS. The reason I knew those were extremely challenging questions for Clinton was that I had spent my free time over the preceding year listening to a Democratic and a Republican lawyer attacking and counter-attacking each other over Bush and Clinton.
From looking at everything that came out of this it became clear that the underlying sickness in the system spanned both Clinton and Bush administrations – it had no party affiliation.
Those two questions struck at the heart of the sickness in the system. THAT is what is keeping the American people down.

I think Obama’s race certainly helped him with some voters, just as it prompt some voters not to support him. You can say something similar for Hillary: Some people support her because she is a woman, and some people oppose her because of her sex. Neither would appeal to so many voters is race and sex were their only characteristics. So what’s the issue?

This man Bob Johnson earned his right to say whatever he wants, to support whoever he wants.
Bob Johnson EARNED it, worked for it…… which is NOT what we can say about Obama…. He is lucky to be in the position he is in, and what is amazing to watch is this Obama shows no HUMILITY…… just pure ARROGANCE.

Has Obama? He says he hasn’t, he talks like he actually understands the issues, and now we have Clinton and McCain double teaming on him. Sure sounds like the ‘Special Interests Party’ teaming up on the threat to their multi-million kickbacks and the people who effectively ‘own’ them.
To me, this is a pretty strong indication that you should put your heads down and pull the lever for Obama.
I say put your heads down because the closer the American people actually get to sticking up for themselves and choosing a leader that will put their interests first the more hysterical and shrill and dangerous the people with power will become.

The race card has been played several times before Obama speech on race. It was bound to come out , espically since all blacks except for a hand full vote for Hillary. Obamas supporters brought out the race card right after the New Hampshire primary on Msnbc. Obama wife brought it out when she stated ‘there ain’t no black people in Iowa”. All along Obama planned to give his speech on race, just waiting for the right moment. After all he is the gifted one on words, but not on action. Look at his Illinois legislative record, 2003 his only good year.

Everyone has the right to say anything they want – just remember with right comes responsibility. That said, this is what I want to say – I believe Ferraro and Johnson are missing the point and the issue – Barak Obama is inspirational – not because he is “black”, because he is inspirational! He is also intellegent, balanced, and empathetic – he espouses a common sense approach to the issues of our day that neither of his opponents seem to grasp and certainly DO NOT espouse – they’re too busy pandering and manipulating the public for votes. I am not naive – I know there are those who would vote for/against Senator Obama because of his race, however, I truely believe the majority of his supporters are voting for the fundamental change in our approach to the issues facing us – it wouldn’t matter if he were white, female, whatever. To suggest otherwise is a slight to Senator Obama and his supporters.

Bob Johnson has spoken at length about his admiration for Robert F Kennedy who had been a senator for 3 years before he announced his candidacy.FDR was governor of NY for 4 years before he ran for the office in 1932. Richard Nixon on the other hand had a lot of “experience”. While we are on the subject, Hillary has one term over Obama in the Senate.Being married to the president and governor does not qualify as experience. If that’s the case Nancy Reagan should get her shot

There will be a movie made about how it is not the individual but the MACHINE behind it.
But thank God for the internet and the wonderfully curious folks who blogs and searches and chats so that even if a genius like Axelrod tries to portray an ideal—- We will see that it is what it was from the beginning. A FARCE PREYING ON THE MASSES….

this is so dumb…don’t you think any “plus” he gets from being black is erased by the sheer closeted number of people who won’t vote for him.
Otherwise why has no other black man run this successfully before…you telling me that there was never a black man qualified enough to be President?
This statement no matter who makes it is just stupid …obviously racism still exists. Those who say it doesn’t are not being genuine.
If he wasn’t black I am absolutely sure he would be doing even better than he is. He is winning despite racism…not because of it.

Carpenter: If the Corporations are keeping people employed in the US, are paying them fair wages and not stiffing so as to gain outsized profits, are not putting those profits in tax havens leading to the gains not trickling back down for the American people – then fine. What we need is business in balance. It is blatantly clear that things are not currently in balance so something has to be done to restore balance.
It is in everyone’s interests to restore balance economically because the fabric of society begins to fall apart when things are not in balance – rising crime, families torn apart, increased joblessness and homelessness. Greed trickles down to create that – that which is created trickles back up to take down greed. Everybody suffers.

Married to Bill Clinton – the reason Hillary is a candidate and the reason she is still in the race. Hillary is reaping the “I owe Bill” and the recognition of Bill’s name.
Hillary has repeatedly played the “woman” card. There are many white men that would have voted for Obama if he appeared to be white.
There are many people that still believed that Obama is a Muslim when they voted in the primary.
What will Johnson get from the Clintons for his comments that were designed to keep the race issue in the headlines. Designed to give Sean Hannity and Limbaugh more material for their rants.
Without Hillary’s nonstop attacks against Obama. She would have lost Ohio and she would have lost Texas by a larger margin if she had not done the NAFTA false attacks while her campaign manager was working against the American people.
The first commenter was correct. Obama has a rare special gift to inspire our country to work together and to help heal our reputation with the rest of the world.
As a white woman almost Hillary’s age, Obama is the first candidate I have ever been excited to support

Bob Johnson is foolish! I understand and respect anyone having the right to support whomever they choose. Can Bob Johnson just support Hillary Clinton without tearing Barack Obama down, especially when Johnson has single handed poisoned Black America with some of the content displayed on BET. Now that he has pimped his community and made a little money, he has the audacity to downplay the accomplishments of Barack Obama. Come on Johnson, that’s just self-hatred. Bottom line is just this – Hillary Clinton underestimated Barack Obama. He has run a brilliant campaign while the Clinton campaign has bordered on mental instability, lies and incompetence. Barack is beating BOTH CLINTONS and McCain and that is pissing the Clinton’s off. Now, on Johnson’s and Ferraro’s comments – Paint a white face on Barack Obama and call him Joe Smith, give his the same experience and background and this is what would be said about him. This Joe Smith is a phenom. He is young, fresh, inspirational and beathing the pants off the “Established Washington”. I believe we’re looking at the next President of the United States. Now, put Barack’s name and face back on and it and you still come up with the same conclusion. We’re looking at the next Presiden of the United States. The first thing I hope he does as President is outlaw the trash that is peddled on MTV, VH1 and BET!!!

Everyone seems to be missing the larger point. It does not matter whether Hillary or Obama deserve the votes they get. What matters is what demographic each dominates, and what this means for the general election. Because he is Black, Obama gets 90% of the Black vote, which gives him the edge in the primaries. In the general election, however, Hillary has the edge because she will draw more White voters and women. There are many more White and women Democratic voters than Black Democratic voters in traditionally “blue” states, so Hillary has a better chance of winning a general election than does Obama.
This all seems pretty obvious.
Posted by: David H | April 15, 2008, 12:18 pm 12:18 pm
Obama supporters are complaining that Hillary is unfairly hitting Obama with his “bitter” and “clinging” comments. Hillary has no choice but to do this, because unless she strongly condemns these comments McCain will use them against her in the general election. As she said, his words reinforce the narrative that Democrats are elist and condescending toward small town and middle America. Unless she strongly condemns Obama’s words McCain will say that she agrees with Obama.

Yes Bob Johnson comments like Geraldine Ferraro are intended to be racially divisive. Ferraro said the same thing about Jesse Jackson. In 2006 she said it would be easier for a woman than African American to be elected.

If Obama were only getting Black votes in this country, your reasoning would be absolutely correct.
None of the MEDIA in this entire country were INTELLIGENT enough to understand what Obama was saying in San Francisco, now another idiot thinks that he’s only receiving Black votes.
I don’t know if the man can help this country of DUMMIES or not!

Yep being Black and named Barack Obama sure makes it easier to get elected.
Look at the previous Black presidents.
I tell you it’s a real plus.
That must be why he got 79% of the vote in Idaho, and defeated Clinton by over 20% in Maine and other states.
Note Bill Clinton, John Kerry, an Al Gore received over 90%.

“Obama acknowledges, with no small irony, that he benefits from his race. If he were white, he once bluntly noted, he would simply be one of nine freshmen senators, almost certainly without a multimillion-dollar book deal and a shred of celebrity. Or would he have been elected at all?”
The above quote is from Obama’s own Senatorial website. Google it.

Bob Johnson is as delusional as Hillary. He really believes Bill Clinton is Black. And Hillary is still ducking sniper fire. Does she really think we’re going to forget all her lies. Barack Obama did not automatically have 90% of the black vote (did Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton?) Besides, Bob Johnson is a billionaire because he used/pimped black people for that money by broadcasting on BET programming that continuously denigrated African Americans, particularly women. He has the right to express his opnion but I have no respect for Mr. Johnson.

We all know that Obama’s African American support has increased over time. Its super silly season now!! The Clintons are bringing the surrogates out again to play the race card, and now they are doing it under cover, with the Black Man, Bob Johnson. Lanny Davis, last weeek, “we have not heard enough” about Rev. Wright. Get over it…you lost Hillary and Obama will be our nominee.

BTW, Bob Johnson is one of the 20 ‘fat cats’ that threatened Speaker Nancy Pelosi last month, by saying she would loose their financial support if they didn’t support Sen. Clinton. Mr. Johnson should be careful with his pandering for the Clintons, or maybe the 90% of Af-Am supporters voting for Obama, will decide to stop watching his network. Also, at the beginning, Obama did not get the large share of the Af-Am vote, Senator Clinton did.

Bob Johnson(That man with dirty money who pimped black women for profit)thinks he can just open his mouth and say any nonesense and would be believed. Barack will have been where he is whether he is black, white, blue, green, yellow or pink. The guy is just brilliant and inspirational and that is why people are flocking to him. If anything at all, if Barack was white he will have already wraped up the nomination. Let me use myself as an example. When I first heard of Barack was when listened to his speech at the 04 democratic convention and I was blown away. The question is, was I blown away because of his color? The answer is no. Its because of what he said. And consistently, he has delivered similar speeches all across the country. That is the reason why people love him. He brings out the best in us and we love him for that. We don’t love him because of his color. Bob Johnson, that professional pimp, is wrong. And he knows it

The problem with Bob Johnson’s comments is that Obama did not “start off with 90% of the Black vote.” Many Black people did not believe he could actually win, so they backed Clinton. And, well, then came ol’ Bill riding into the Carolinas and the rest is history…

I blame the media and some ignorant supporters (mostly Obama’s) for the split in the democratic party. The media stirred up the racial issue the moment Sen. Obama won IA and was heading to SC – they started reporting that with SC being 50% black he will win because he will get the black vote and then went on to malign the Clintons knowing that some ignorant folks would take the bait. The media knew that in splitting the democrats, i.e, turning the AA population against the Clintons (by mischaracterizing everything they say), no demcorat will win and that gives way to a repuplican whitehouse and wow, that’s where we are heading because of them and a majority of hateful Obama supporters posting on here. So thank you.

Mr. Johnson has no credibility with me. For far too long he has been a negative influence as well as a self-serving, money worshipping, status quo maintaining wealth hoarder. In common speak, in my opinion, he is a vampire who has advocated entertainment over information. Johnson has some soul searching to do, although I doubt that he would agree. That’s his problem, though… Thankfully, he is neither a public servant nor a bona fide leader of any sort. Despite his money and resources, he is irrelevant to the balance and future growth of society.

I am so saddened that Mr. Johnson would make the assumption that we in 2008 can’t see the content of Barak Obama’s character rather than the color of his skin.
To think that Americans can’t support someone is more of an outsider to Washington, someone who just paid off their student loans, someone who is young and vibrant….
Mr. Johnson I guess we have to respect your loyalty to the Clintons while you support our support for Barak Obama, the candidate who DESPITE the color of his skin, is leading the Democratic primary.
I guess we will see who Americans really favor…

what’s crazy about everyone thinking that obama is where he is only because of blacks, is, when an election has all white candidates, who does the black constituency or electorate vote for? why, for one of the all white candidates, of course: because, well, they are all white! (in such a hypothetical scenario; even thought most presidential elections and primaries featured all-white candidates and nominees.)
that’s one glaring omission, and it is so, because, that’s how imbedded whiteness is in our political process — it is the status quo. and thus, when white candidates win the majority of the black vote, is it because they are white, because there is no other candidate of race, because they are most worthy, or any and/all of the above?
to put this another way, when the black majority votes for a white candidate, it’s not a glaring factoid since it’s the status quo: i.e. the white candidate is most deserving. it is expected. however, when the black majority votes for a black candidate, it must be because he or she is black: not because he or she is deserving. it is unexpected.
how pundits, campaign staffers and candidates overlook this, is quite beyond comprehension.

Ferraros rather extensive comments at the time about Obama’s “historic” candidacy implied that she thought America was ready for a Black President and not ready for a woman president..I think the fact that she was branded a racist by Obamas campaign is one of the dirty tricks he’s used to try to minimize and vilify Hillary.
I don’t agree with her but her comments were harmless.
Is is OK for a Black man even though he’s a Hillary supporter to state his opinion? Yes!
There is a difference between being attacked for talking about race and being racist.
Wright was profane and he attacked people personally from his pulpit (I’ve listened to the whole sermons and that fact doesn’t change) His attacks were anti- White….and anti Jewish in his writings…and also directed to Obama’s political opponents…Is this OK because he’s Black?
Obama’s comments in San Francisco were not just about guns and religion (although they are being watered down for public consumption) He also was saying that small town America is racist and anti-immigrant…basically because they are bitter. Is he right…Because the Obama campaign is spending a lot of energy judging others and pointing fingers. I believe he’s wrong about small town America.
I also think that with the help of the media that he’s going to convince some people he was complimenting them.
If Obama is elected America will suffer greatly(not because he’s Black but because he has been playing the “race card” all along. He is the most inexperienced candidate in recent history. He has a thin record of accomplishment that has been propped up wherever he goes…..He reminds me of Bush more than Kennedy.
In my opinion Obama became the “establishment” candidate in Iowa…and the reason Kennedy suggested he run in the first place was because he had no record whatsoever and they thought there would be no way that the voters could fault him on position because he had never stood up for anything. He also has a lot of charisma! His speech making overall in this campaign may not even be his views…..Even his webpage in the top right hand corner has a quote from Devall that he used in his MA race and as usual it is not credited.
Obama is not exactly an empty suit rather he is a marketed product by a really slick Axelrod machine that has built in the premise that no one can attack him because that makes them a racist.

It was a brilliant move to assure the Black vote…branding both Clinton’s racists..It was also the “politics of hopelessness” at it’s worst.
And then to support Farrakan and Wright rather than ask them to stop being racist is the hypocrisy that assured a lot of Democrats will be Rebublicans in November.

I find Robert Johnson more aggravating than Geraldine Ferraro. At least with Ferraro, she had years in elected office (ie. should have known better) and being a past Democratic standard bearer (I feel the same way about Joe Lieberman). I neither liked what she said then nor do I want to hear another word from her on any issue. But I think I understood where she was coming from and would not label her a David Duke racist.
What does Robert Johnson have or know to support his beliefs or leanings? He founded BET. Before the push of skin on BET, he had the beginnings of an alternative press like theroot or blackamericaweb except readily available for couch potatoes that don’t usually read the newspaper. He merged with a monopoly, had his power subsumed in the corporate structure, and has ego to fall back on.
He lied when he said he wasn’t referring to Obama’s experimentation. He then came back and said he apologized because no one believed the first statement. Either he knew what he was saying and got caught or he didn’t know what he was saying and is posing as a Hillary surrogate.
Either way, I am tired of him. I want him to take his opinion and those other big wig Democratic donors away from the policy dispute in the primaries. If he wants to distort and lie, he should keep it within the conglomerate he is now a part of. They might be able to put it to good use.

If Dems vote GOP – if they act on the “Spite Vote” – should Obama win the nomination, then, by all means, the Dems will get what they deserve.
However, if the Super Delegates should wrest from Obama what is rightfully his own – that he earned outright – and tap Hillary as the nominee, the majority of Obama supporters will not vote for either Hillary or McCain: they will simpy exercise their constitutional right NOT to vote.
Either way, if Obama doesn’t receive the nomination is so rightly deserves, the Democratic party loses: Period.

DAVID H., you reason that since there are collectively more white and women democrats to vote for Clinton in the general election than there are African Americans to vote for Obama, then Obama could never win. That fact, you suggest, should be reason enough to back Hillary. What you overlook in your analysis is that without the AA vote, NO Democrat can win. There are not enough whites or women in the Democratic party to make up for the loss of this (lately dismissable) voting bloc in a match against republicans.

The black people that voted in the same precinct that I voted in were voting for Obama because he is black. No one is making a secret of that. For the most part there are a large number of black voters who heard their was a black candidate running for president name Obama and they vote for him. If they were asked to identify three additional thing Obama not including race and gender the majority could not name three things. For the most part since a whole lot of black people spend their time trying to get to minimum wage jobs riding public transportation the don’t have time to keep up with what happening on the political circuit. Obama “hope” resonates with them/us however ill protrayed it may be given by the candidate. What Bob Johnson did not say is that Obama’s expect the black vote as if it is his right even though he know that he only be able to throw crumbs in our direction because he will owe so many rich white people for their support. So once again we end up with “Reagans Trickle Down Effect”. A vote for Obama by a poor black person is irresponsible and a betrayal to our children.

….Before Obama……did you hate Bill Clinton?
….If 88% of the Afro -Americans vote for Obama, should 88% of all the other colors of citizenry vote for Clinton?
… Is this not the most uniquely ridiculous display of racism yet?
Sort of like Michelle’s saying, during a recent photo opp, “we need another white face over here”.
….Did you know that your beloved Barry was the ONLY candidate who could not make time for ceremonies memorializing Martin Luther King… either on the anniversary of his birth, or on the date of his assassination because he was too busy campaigning?
….Do you know how well he treated the Afro-Americans in his district? The ones who froze in Rezko’s tenement while Obama pocketed the gas money?
….Do you not feel comfortable in the the company of people like Louis Farrakhan, Rezko, Reverend Meeks and Pastor Wright? Have you ever read the writings of Farrakhan? Can you picture the group of them in the oval office setting the protocol for CHANGE?
….Do you really think that Obama has the best healthcare and economic plans for our beleagured country?
….Did you really not enjoy life during the prosperity of BIll Clinton’s Presidency?
….Be careful who you vote for.
….Be very very careful!

Well I bite into this back and forth. What the hell is the difference of black voters supporting obama and women voters supporting clinton? We have female superdelegates who said they are supporting Clinton cause its an opportunity to put a female in the white house. You have old female republicans who are switching sides to vote for clinton, cause its a chance to put a woman in the white house. HOW IS THIS ANY DIFFERENT?!! People will vote for who they want. Just one owns a market dosent justify. If obama had 14 million black people and that was all he had voting for him, fine, you can talk. But pretty damn sure there are not that many black people in Wyoming.

For the record–this “what if he was white or black” nonsense is an absolutely ridiculous line of argument.
Being “black” is more than just skin color–there are social and cultural aspects to race which are impossible to quantify or “cull out”. How can you possibly separate out someone’s “blackness” or “whiteness” from who they are.
The whole idea is repulsive, like performing some kind of strange dissection of someone’s identity for scientific purposes. I hope this is the last I hear of this insipid garbage.
Thank you.

jgaw-Of course the media does not want to discuss this issue. I guess it would be bringing to the forefront the numerous and many obstacle and deficit black people face in this country. It would prove that racism is alive and well no matter how you much it is ignore and swept under the rug. The thing is black people have been consistently exploited by black politicians. This is how sad the representation in my neck of the woods is. For twenty-three years one of our black state rep. was re-elected. He only sponsored and pass three bills, all related to one unfunded Holiday. Two years ago, he was defeated because of his inept platform. The person who won the election managed to sponsor three bills during the past two years but could not control is conduct. To make a long story short our lazy non-effective politician ran and was re-elected. Of course another black politician stay in office for twenty-five years without any real results. For years he was unopposed on the ballot. He was finally defeated but only after he betrayed his constituents by voting with the Republicans against the welfare of the people who put him in office. Currently he is a lobbyist for the Rep. This is the same way that Obama has handle his political career exploiting the people who entrust him with their welfare. Just another exploiter and then want to send the black people to the back of the bus. Let the white people sit up front.

Bob Johnson and BET has done more to destroy the black community than the guns our black youths are using to kill each other. For the entire people, Black, White, Asian, or Hispanic, vote how ever you see fit. For me personally and my house, the Clintons in the Whitehouse for 1 week will destroy this country. I often referred to Bill Clinton during his tenure as “My President” because the average white in my office was disgusted with the shameful things that occurred during his administration. I now understand their sentiments.
I do not know what Senator Obama will do for this country, but I will give him my vote. Him being black is the last reason why I will vote for him, but his message that politics in Washington is destroying our country.
I would challenge Bob Johnson, and say if Obama were White, Hillary Clinton would be back in the Senate. Clinton will destroy this country, as her campaign has been destroyed.
Everybody, take a chill pill and vote for whomever you chose, and celebrate with me when Barack Obama, will be sworn in as President of the US. This I know will happen. Do not worry, Barak will not destroy the country, I did not destroy my neighborhood when I moved in. I promise you, it will be okay.
Good Night and God Bless my next President.

Of course obama would not be anywhere near where he is if he wasn’t black. Everyone knows this, but the black people in this country won’t admit his only qualification is the color of his skin.
He has done more to divide this country right now than bush ever did. obama in maybe 8 years might make a very good candidate, right now he is not ready.
A lot of democrats are disgusted with the campaign he has run. And that because of this McCain is going to win the election. It seems that every single time the Democrats have a change to win something they shoot them selves in the butt and spew that crap all over the place…just wait and see when McCain wins.
Remember most of the states that voted for obama are mostly republican. And after you count their votes, the Democratic votes won’t be enough to over come them. And 2/3 of the country including Democrats won’t vote for obama. That’s the problem and the Democrats are going to loose again and it is not fair.

So 1, Obama didnt have the black vote from jump. 2 the black vote was Hillary’s to lose and she did.
3, what makes black voters any less informed or their choices any less important than other voters?

So the African American media mogul Bob Johnson thinks Ferraro was right: that the only reason Obama is on his way to the nomination is because he’s black, in other words, affirmative action?
How pitifully uninformed. Even I, a middle aged white man, know that the biggest recipient of benefit from affirmative action always has been and continues to be white women.
So if that ridiculous remark applies to Obama, it must apply “in spades” to the white woman in the race, who shall go nameless lest he who speaks it turn to stone. What utter filth.

Obama, talented? No. He used arcane political laws to knock 5 others out of the race to become a state senator. There he voted present 130 times, more then any other senator, and even on some oh his own bills. He was the only senator who voted to allow sex shops to operate within 500 feet of elementary schools, the only one to allow violent sexual offenders to get time off for good behaviour, yet will not talk about these, or any other votes, but had no problems attacking Hillary’s or Edward’s. He became an accidental U.S. Senator, when the incumbent suffered a messy divorce scandal in August of the election year. The republicans then bought in Alan Keyes to run. He then said he would in no means be ready to run for president in 2008. When Bill Clinton said that Jesse Jackson did win South Carolina, and there was nothing historic in Obama’s win, how was that racist? Obama is getting the elitist, liberal white vote, 90% of the black vote, and while it might get him the nomination, his extreme liberal views, his budget breaking proposals, his one time call for a complete ban on guns, will ensure he will lose in November by over 100 electoral votes.

Bob Johnson has done more harm to the black community with his acceptance of buffonery and mysogynistic behavior on BET that he need not dare act as a voice of cultural reasoning for anyone. He fired Tavis Smiley for stirring the waters a bit too much. He failed to mention women voting for hillary because she is a woman. Blacks voting for her because she is a clinton. Hillary would be nowhere wihtout her name . She rode that to a senate seat. And a presidential nomination.
Hypocrites

It is a mistake to think that Bob Johnson speaks with authority on behalf of Senator Clinton. It is one thing to support someone because you are their friend, it is another to just be plain ignorant and make asinine statements because you are their friend. To say that Senator Obama is where he is because he is black, is to say that Senator Clinton is where she is because she is a white woman, and most importantly she is where she is because her husband was the president of the United States. How ridiculous is Bob Johnson! For a man to be as accomplished as he is, everytime he opens his mouth nonsense flies out at rational thought.

Bob Johnson is a very smart person but he should know that telling the truth about obama and black voters could put him in much danger. All of obama black supporters must agree with rev wright and the relationship of obama, Louis Farrakhan, Rezko, and rev meeks. The white supporters must be just plain stupid. Obama has lied several times during this campaign to blacks and white over the rev wright issue, doing drugs and the list goes on and on. Most of the time, obama has to go back and say I DIDNT MEAN IT THAT WAY.

Bob wouldn’t be owner of the Bobcats if he were white. The league wanted a minority owner. Go figure!

I respectfully disagree with Larry. As an African American woman, I do not vote or make my decisions — especially political — based on the color of my skin or anyone else’s. I’m much more intelligent than that. All politicians say things on the campaign trail that they later regret. Politicians are known to spin the message to the audience…including Mrs. Clinton, which has been proven time and time again. Bob Johnson’s comments should not be taken as truth — it is just his opinion like the rest of ours. Because he is a black man talking about another black man does not translate into he knows what he is talking about. That’s what makes the ability to have these kinds of exchanges so sweet. We can do it in a country through a medium that provides these opportunities. A white woman and a black man…I didn’t think I’d see it in my lifetime. I was a Clinton supporter (and still admire both Clintons for many reasons), but changed as she, her husband and surrogates like Mr. Johnson became acid in their attacks with so much entitlement injected in their delivery.

It’s horrible that Bob Johnson has forgotten where he has come from.
If it weren’t for Africans Americans he sure as hell would not be where he is today! Being african american I for one will never ever in life support anything Bob Johnson has to offer. I’m sure their will be a backlash towards him for his outrageous comments….Hey Bob did you see what happened to Tavis this week? Looks like your next in line buddy!

So, can someone please explain to me why Ferraro was subjected to a witch hunt, when Obama says this (and he must agree with it’s accuracy cause this Chicago Tribune article is posted on HIS Senate website):
Quote:
“Obama acknowledges, with no small irony, that he benefits from his race.
If he were white, he once bluntly noted, he would simply be one of nine freshmen senators, almost certainly without a multimillion-dollar book deal and a shred of celebrity. Or would he have been elected at all?”
(I’m leaving out the links – cause this post keeps getting deleted, and I think that may be why).
Let’s be fair here – cause she got totally and utterly trashed and ruined for expressing the same concept he did. SHE IS OWED A BIG, FAT, GIGANTIC APOLOGY, and I emailed every news outlet with a computer to tell them so.

see cynthia,
what you have just written is the reason why if obama gets the nomination
it will be no black pride to it.
what happened to tavis-should never have happened. What John Lewis was forced to do should never have happened
I do not know how old you are. I am 53
and I will tell you
TO MANY GOOD PEOPLE BLACK AND WHITE
DIED FOR BLACK PEOPLES RIGHT TO VOTE
ONLY TO COME TO THIS DAY AND AGE AND HAVE OTHER BLACK PEOPLE TERRORIZING OTHER BLACK PEOPLE SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY WANT TO VOTE FOR WHO THEY THINK IS THE BEST CANDIDATE.
THE PEOPLE WHO DID WHAT THEY DID TO TAVIS SHOULD BE WHIPPED. PERIOD.
OBAMA WILL NEVER BE PRESIDENT
THE ONLY HOPE AND CHANGE HE WILL BRING TO THE BLACK AND POOR PEOPLE IS HAVING THEM SAY IN A YEAR OR TWO
“I HOPE we have a CHANGE in president soon.
HE AND HIS LEFTY MONEY BAGS WILL HAVE BLACK PEOPLE BACK ON WELFARE AND LIVING IN THE PROJECTS.-FOODSTAMPS,ETC.
MAKES ME SICK.
‘OH MY PEOPLE YOU’VE GOT TO FREE YOURSELF’
“I SEE YOU DOWN ON YOUR HANDS AND KNEES SIFTING THROUGH DUST LOOKING FOR A DIAMONDS”
“YOUR’RE SEARCHING HIGH AND LOW FROM THE MOUNTAINTOP TO THE VALLEY-BUT YOU WILL NOT FIND IT”
“FREE YOURSELVES”
“OBAMA IS NOT THE ONE”

For Bob Johnson it is paytime. It is not about supporting Hillary. It is about Obama having for so long against the culture BET is spreading in Black communities.

Bon Jonhson is not only a sellout but he is also behave like the typical “house negro” that used to work inside the slave owners house because of his sellout abilities. Obviously such slaves received better treatment than the slave working on plantations because they were always keen to denigrate their own in order to retain preferential treatment. From now on I will be watching Fox News and CNN and will request my cable network to remove BET from my channels.

the only comment I will make about the bob johnson sellout comments is, well
the ignorance of it speaks for itself.
it’s the crab effect.
anyone jealous of bob johnson-is going to love obama welfare rolls, foodstamps, and projects plan to help the poor.
get ready to watch the remake of the
“Superfly movie”

The problem with Bob Johnson speaking out and believing that he has any right to speak on what African Americans thinks is riduculous. He completely sold out African American this was displayed througout he time with BET by the programing he allowed to pollute the airways. He couldn’t beat MTV head to head so he reach out to the lowest common demonitor in the African American coulture and put on shows like BET after dark that portrays women and men in the worst light possible. So all I can say to bob johnson is shut the he– up no one respects what you have to say and you are using this as way to gain attention for yourself because no one I can think of in the African American is listening or cares what you have to say.

As bad as we hate to admitt Mr. Johnson and Mrs. Ferraro are correct their are alot of more African Americans out their simply because he is a black man and they really don’t even know what he stands for.

Bod Johnson is a sellout, we have been voting for white candidates all of our life and Bob Johnson never had a problem with that…. Now he’s going on TV talking about black people voting for Obama because he’s black… So??? I don’t see white folks going on TV debating they’re voting for McCain because he’s white… Bob Johnson is a true sellout… 40 years ago we were asked to move to the back of the bus by our white brothers, unfortunately today we are being thrown under the bus by our own black brothers…. It’s a shame

Bob Johnson is a businessman first and African American second. His main concern is getting paid.If Ms. Clinton can do that for him,in any way, he will lend his support. Maybe, God willing he will wake up one day.
Posted by: MICHAEL | April 17, 2008, 9:33 pm 9:33 pm
People saying that it is fine because white people vote for white people are missing the point. It would be a useful statement if only 10 percent of whites were voting for Obama. Clinton has supporters because of her issues, Obama has supporters because hes new and smooth.

Despite Bob Johnson’s history, he is 110% right. This shouldn’t be an argument on how credible Mr. Johnson is. This is an argument on whether his statement is true. The answer to that question is of course! It’s just common sense…

Again the race card is being played loudly to confuse people. I really hate the words “Back and White” When are humans going to learn that in the eyes of God these colours do not exist. Only bigoted people keep these words as fuel for the fire. No wonder the world is in a mess and no nation knows what to do next.
Obama is as colourd as Clinton. The truths are that Clinton is a woman and Obama is a man. What people should be voting for is the intellect, the vision for the world and the ability to correct this white and black anathema, including the ability to unite people of all races. BARACK OBAMA has these qualities, but unfortunately CLINTON does not. Just think for a minute what she said about Iran “… she would use nuclear weapons to wipe Iran out of existence” are these words for a sane person? As a Presidential candidate such words should not have been used. What she forgot she was saying is if the leadership of Iran does attack Israel she will finish Iran which includes innocent children and mothers. Is this craziness or cleaver politics? Personally I HATE WAR and HATE TO SEE INNOCENT PEOPLE DIE FOR NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN
BARACK OBAMA as president of the America will be for a united America and more peaceful world. Mrs CLINTON as president of America will continue the status quo.
I must quote Martin Luther King Jr word from his I HAVE A DREAM speech and see whether we are heading that direction
I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed — “We hold these these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal.”
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.
For those who want to keep race in their heart please go on.

” am Canadian with no dog in this Race. I have NEVER seen a Politician like Obama. Of ANY color. Watching the Compassion Forum brought it home. It took everything in me to stay interested in what Clinton had to say. Typical Politician-speak, never really answering I questions but talking AROUND them. Obama was a breath of fresh air. He was direct, thoughtful and spoke from his heart, with intelligent responses. He is honest, compassionate, fair and intelligent.
I don’t care WHAT color he is, he is the better Candidate.
I just WISH he was Canadian…
”
OBAMA is the right person to be President of America. Period.

The Black Obama race started with his affiliation with Trinity church and Rev Wright. Obama and company called the race card, nobody else.
