Clinton Takes a Shot of Whiskey in Northwest Indiana

ABC News’ Eloise Harper reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton stopped by Bronko’s Restaurant and Lounge in Crown Point, Ind., tonight. Clinton stood by the bar and took a shot of Crown Royal whiskey. She took one sip of the shot, then another small sip, then a few seconds later threw her head back and finished off the whole thing.

Clinton later sat down at a table and enjoyed some pizza and beer, and called over Mayor Tom McDermott of Hammond, Ind., to come join the table.

"Every time I get around you we start drinking, senator,"  the mayor exclaimed.

Clinton nodded and raised her glass.

"It’s Saturday night, though, Tom," she said.

The senator was eager to get a slice of pepperoni.

"I got one pepperoni, I think it’s cheese and pepperoni," she said.

A fellow diner made a toast in Clinton’s honor and she raised her beer glass and touched the glasses of people sitting at her table. Clinton was looking for a staffer and her seat partner said, "Maybe he’s up at the bar."

"My campaign drives people to drink," Clinton said with a smile.

Then she turned to her ABC and CBS embedded campaign reporters.

"The only bad thing about this wonderful time with you is that every bite I take is recorded for posterity," she said. "These two young people are really very very nice but their job is to get something on film that looks really weird, so I try to accommodate them as much as often."

@LeeLee07:
Just curious, what does “Rise, Hillary, Rise” mean? From the ashes? From the dead? Is she being coronated?
I’m not meaning to be insulting – that is the first time I’ve seen that used and it strikes me as odd.

Was Hillary the Bosnian General drinking on behalf of people in PA who have lost their jobs, their health care plans and pension? That is the way Hill thinks about you and that is the way she sees us through glasses of wiskey. Wake-up people and let us get somebody in the White House who is close to us and think like us. God bless America and God bless Obama.OBAMA08.

and I should have added that it doesn’t matter where it is made, because who cares. If people could dissociate themselves from their candidate for a moment, I think it’s pretty clear that this was done to bring up the idea that people would rather “have a beer” with her than Obama. Should he counter the notion? That’s up to him whether it’s important.

If someone wanted to buy her a shot then that is fine and in that setting could be considered rude to refuse. However, if she is buying herself or others shots, then Clinton really should buy American made liquor. Otherwise, she might as well slap on the Chinese lapel and start waving the Chinese made flag since no worker should be bitter about their lost jobs, right?

This is politics and she is trying to look like an average Joe. She may succeed. My guess is you won’t see him in a tie anymore until the primary, his sleeves will be rolled up too. He might have a beer, but no shots as that would look too orchestrated.

Crown Royal is a VERY famous Canadian Whiskey, Hillary choose something else to drink would you. THIS Canadian doesn’t want you ruining our reputation any further. I remember just after 9-11 you appearing on Canadian TV/US TV saying the terrorists all came through Canada. You never did apologize but then YOU NEVER DO! Barack Obama will make a fine neighbouring President of the United States, Hillary stay in the Senate (if they will still have you when this is over).

It’s clear she doesn’t really know her alcohol – but I’m not sure I’d expect her to know them that well. My guess is she didn’t even know it was Crown Royal (which doesn’t even sound American) but her campaign probably told her to drink whatever was put in front of her.

The former Goldwater girl who met Bill and became a Democrat? McCain who flirted with becoming a Democratic candidate for VP? Obama is at least true to being a Democrat. Let’s hope folks see thru her latest reincarnation, Hillary the Defender of the Little People – give me a break! Hillary and Bill – we want the White House back at any cost, we will ruin Barack’s chances so we can run in 2012, or Chelsey can run in 12.

Canadas been a great neighbor. I don’t want to speak bad about it. If I was Clinton traveling into Canada I would definitely consider Canadas finist. Though, I would bring America’s best as diplomatic gift. If I was a campaigning Clinton AND in the United States, then I would sharply steer clear of all obviously non-american beverages. America is headed for a huge recession that workers will want jobs during and those without will want leaders that are sensitive to those without the jobs that have went overseas or are in North American Free trade areas.

@kravitz-Corvettes are definitely american icons and even if it isn’t 100% U.S. made with U.S. parts it would fit the bill more than Canadian whiskey. I think drinking Canadian whiskey is more likely to be a bigger blunder than the what could’ve been scenario of driving a corvette into a liquor store and picking up a bottle of J.D. Maybe not though :-)

FYI – if you do a little homework, Ford is a bit more “American” nowadays but the Big 3 are getting less American all the time. What are you driving? If even half of you reading this drove a Ford, GM, or Chrysler then a lot more Americans would have jobs (but then again, they should make cars you want to buy).
@carla sue: no disrespect, but the slogans don’t work well here.

susan, i appreciate your passion for obama……but where is his passion for the democrats when he is listening to and naming a book after someone who says GD america….and the white man invented AIDS to kill the black man….etc, etc. all politicians exaggerate the truth, all the candidates have done just that. but obamas mistakes are more loud and clear than anyone else’s. he is an eloquent speaking traitor. and as i have said and asked in earlier posts prior to this date…..no one gave a crap about obama until oprah got on the bandwagon. where is she now. hopefully if she has any sense, she is tipping one back with hillary in a small town pub, and pulling for rural america and those who don’t have a lot of money or support those who do, like obama.

On US jobs and Canada, check out your statistics. Did you know where you get most of your oil and gas? Who is the largest force in Afghanistan next to the US forces without any thanks or recognition. At least for North Carolina, Canada is the state’s largest trading partner and North Carolina is on the 3 states adding jobs, growing in a healthy steady way. Yes they suffered huge job losses but changed to a technology based economy and is doing well. Lots of room to improve. This is what Obama wishes (as everyone does) for the rest of the US, especially states like Pennsylvania. So let’s not worry if a liquor is made in Canada or the US, let’s make sure part of the economic transaction is positive for the US. The US does not need to be isolationist, they are a world leader!

Vanessa,
That’s one that Obama forgot. Maybe you can call him to remind him. Some people in Pennsylvania bitterly cling to their bottles of booze, waiting for Obama to rescue them from their misguided small-minded ways.
AP News, all over the place, Obama’s remarks give Clinton an opening.

This discussion is almost, but not quite, as absurd as the discussion concerning whether rural Americans are bitter and angry. At least there was some substance to what Obama had to say – while Clinton, even while being “one of the guys” couldn’t come up with anything of significance.

This is a faux controversy fanned by Clinton and the media. Just you watch, Mrs. Clinton who has already gone overboard on her criticisms will be caught in a big lie within the next two days and she will shoot herself in the foot big time. It’s over for her. She is delusional if she thinks this is a fatal blow for Obama. Watch him to hit her with Bosnia, NAFTA, Penn and more

Can someone PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE explain to me why this is newsworthy??? This is as absurd as the article last week about Bush’s press contingent being entertained by Zamfir (the pan flute player) in the Vienna hotel lobby!!! Please, let’s have some REAL news…

No other candidate in U.S. history has been given a pass and red carpet treatment from the media like Obama.
And he STILL couldn’t get voters to fall under his spell.
2 weeks ago he wanted Hillary to GET OUT of the race – because HE had already won the nomination.
Well – if he’s “won” – why were his donors on Billionaires Row asking him why he wasn’t attracting working class voters – the majority of the Dem base that’s been voting for Hillary.
Obama answered – “those people” aren’t voting for me because they’re bitter – and keep holding onto their God and guns and voting for Hillary.
Oh – and the more Obama tries to “explain” his remarks – he just makes it worse.
Thank you Hillary – for rejecting Obama’s remarks because they’re not representative of the Dem Party.

I would do shooters of Crown and eat pizza with her. (I’ll bet she knew how to drop that shot of Crown into a glass of beer without blinking except she’d get a rep for it.) It’s going to be tough between her and McCain, because I like him too. It’s too bad that the coctail party liberal wing of the Dem Party ran that smarmy little racist crook from Chicago as their gesture to how liberal they were; they had a real Dem in Edwards.

The woman is as about as phony as they come. The regular blue collar Hill yeah right. Her run for President has been a nothing but an ego trip.

If Clinton is elected, she probably would run the country — for better or for worse. If Obama becomes president, the empty suit would wave in the breeze while Henry Reid and Nancy Pelosi ruled.

Iswear Carter is becoming senile. There things we are not being told here.I mean who in his right mind would take on a trip such as this in the middle of a campaign??? if it were not for a political statement!!!! It is like turning missles facing Israel.
Why not an OBAMA/Osama ticket or the other way around while we’re at it?. Hamas never wanted peace with Israel Only its destruction. The United States is its only ally. Obama is not going to keep that promise with Israel.
Obama was recorded saying in the Chicago news paper Electronic Intifada.net march 4th 2007 to Ali Abhumina the cofounderof the paper that he was sorry he couldn’t speak about Palestine He’s in the middle of a campaign and when things calm down he could be MORE UP FRONT. And that is when he just finished reassuring AICP the american jewish organization in Chicago that he has Israel’s interest at heart. Enough with lies. Enough with the bias.

If tolerance for the hard stuff is your criteria for who would make the best leader of the free world then America is DOOMED!!!!!!!

Posted by: RL in Illinois | April 13, 2008, 2:04 pm 2:04 pm

Yes, Hillary supporters will raise a glass of spirits to happily celebrate her accomplishments. As for bitterness, Obama supporters are bitter. They’re bitter because they can’t spin their way out of Obama’s elitist word blunders, and because there’s not much Kool Aid left.
Perhaps, Rev, Wright and Michele should mix up another batch.

Posted by: Emily | April 13, 2008, 2:22 pm 2:22 pm

No fan of Hillary but Obama is about as fake as you can get. I kinda feel bad for the democrats if this is really the best they can come up with.

Clinton wants to add booze to the things that down and out small towners cling to.
Will Hill get a local micro brewery to produce a special edition of Pander Beer, just for all her homies in Pa?

I’d rather have a fun drinker and pizza-eater in the White House than a coughing, dried up smoker who’s giving 2nd hand smoke to people who tour the WH.
Go Hillary!

If someone created a website which allowed us to vote on one simple question, ‘are we bitter about how things have been going here in the United States’, do you think the happy campers would ‘win’ or do you think the Americans who are fed up, been pushed down, passed over and trickled on would outnumber those who prefer to wear blinders?
For Hillary to try to twist this comment is beyond her normal campaign games, it’s an act of desperation. When more google for information on her pastor and spritual advisor, Doug Coe, they may come to realize it is all a game to her. When they google through all the campaign lies alone, whether it’s bullets flying, joining the Marines or simply her stands on issues, they will realize we’ll be the losers in these games.
If you want to discuss someone out of touch or elitist, think about the string of unpaid bills Clinton has left in every state she’s been in, bills owed to small vendors. Consider why one would fork out $26,000 for an orchestra for a fundraiser yet not pay her workers’ health insurance premiums for two months.
And btw, we were fooled by a beer drinking party guy trying to act like the common man before, look where it got us. And if using that campaign game is not elitist, I’ll eat my hat.

Did you ask: Would you have a former drug user and continual smoker? The answer is: It is better to have a former ‘drug user’ and a former ‘smoker’ than to have a present drug user and ‘smoker’ who, to make the matter worse might be doing worse than all those in hiding.

Posted by: kemma | April 13, 2008, 10:17 pm 10:17 pm

I have had mORE laughs today reading these comments then I have had in a long time. This should be a comedy site! Oops it is already…
The suit flapping in the wind comment was PRICELESS re: if Hillary wins the prez. SHE will run the country. Experience. Who is this BOB guy? No one ever heard if him until a few months ago.
I can’t believe the DEMS can’t come up with someone with better and more experience than BOB.
I think I will toast my drink to Hill. Go Hillary 2008-2012. I hope she picks Condi as her running mate. Michelle would have a cow.

Small town girl,
Don’t tell me you are as dumb as the Clinton’s and her campaign thought you are? You mean to tell me you think Hillary cares about small and rural towns? You mean to tell me she was planning to campaign and kiss arse with small town Amer. from the start? Please.
You are the one that is stuck on stupid, if you think the Clinton’s give a damn about small town America.
On a personal level, I couldn’t careless about small town America, it’s people, culture, problems, etc. The bigger fish to me is this: The Clinton’s are FINISHED! GOOD Riddance to those idiots. If the Democrats lose this election, so what. As long as the Clinton’s are finished that is fine by me. My family is doing well. We have a nice home and cars.
Hell, we even have health insurance….my point is, I could care less who wins at this point. As long as Hillary does not win and the Clinton myth is debunked McCain can have the WH. Republicans can have it for the next 100 years for all I care.
The best political mind of our lifetime my a//……The most brilliant politican of modern times my a//…..

I saw a tape of that! Ha, I laughed my butt off. That is precisely what Hillary tried to avoid with her big state strategy. She didn’t really won’t to rub elbows with the gun, wiskey crowd..ha! Now, that is just funny. A Goldwater Repub. filthy RICH Dem. ELite is drinking with small town Amer.
CLASSLESS and the WORST type of pandering I’ve ever seen. That is worse than Mitt going hunting!
I know people have to work for votes but that is just pathetic.

Posted by: Holli | April 14, 2008, 4:24 pm 4:24 pm

Oh this is just what I want my two granddaughters to talk about in history class, not! Hillary Clinton drinking shots and beers with the boys in Pennsylvania scrounging for votes!!! Maybe duck hunting or even bowling would have been a better route for her pandering.

Yet another persona for Hillary!
This is too funny for words.
First she is Rambo(dodging sniper-fire
in Bosnia), then she is Paulette Revere,
then she is Elmer Fudd hunting down
wascally wabbits with her dad as a little girl, now she is Indiana Jones
downing some shots at a local bar!
Personally I think the Elmer Fudd story
suits Hillary best!

Posted by: reaganfan | April 15, 2008, 12:30 pm 12:30 pm

She tries to defend family values while forgiving her adulterous husband. Strike one for hypocrisy. She claims there were snipers in the hills in Bosnia. Strike two for outright lying. And now she doesn’t realize that pizza has cheese on it, and she can’t drink whiskey properly. So for pandering to the blue-collar workers that you’ve been patronizing for a week by pretending to be offended when Obama makes a true statement, then proving that you are so out of touch with that demographic that you don’t even know that pizza has cheese on it, strike three.

Posted by: Fate | April 16, 2008, 11:24 am 11:24 am

What a bizarre age we live in that something like this could generate controversy. Weird. Crown Royal is one of my favorites, so, it seems she has good taste. Except, you don’t just throw it back. It should be sipped, all the way down. Appreciate the flavors, & all that. At least she can handle her booze, unlike our lame-duck-in-chief.
But, seriously, lots of people need to chill out, big-time. Anonymous internet postings seem to being out all sorts of mental illness, don’t they?

Posted by: Tom | April 17, 2008, 10:31 am 10:31 am

Hillary is blue collar?
She and Bill made $20 million last year! That’s not blue collar, or even white. That’s gold collar!
The fact that she has people thinking she’s one of the boys, sipping a shot of whisky like it was a glass of champagne, is amazing. She looked like a fish out of water.
Obama, who made a mere $4 million, made a misstatement no worse than her inflated comments about running from sniper fire in Bosnia. You’d think she would at least known there would have been tv footage of her visit beforehand.
Bitter? Yeah, I’m bitter that we don’t have any real choices to vote for president. It’s sad that there aren’t any better qualified people than the 3 candidates we’re stuck with.
