Democratic Congressional Candidate: Obama? Obama Who?
In North Mississippi, Democratic congressional candidate Travis Childers has been hammered by Republicans for ties to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, in THIS AD from the National Republican Congressional Committee and THIS AD from Childers’ opponent — "When Obama’s pastor cursed America blaming us for 9/11 Childers said nothing," the ad says.
Now Childers is pushing back — by acting as if he’s never even heard of Obama.
In a new TV ad launching today, Childers says his family "has heard the lies and attacks linking me to politicians I don’t know and have never even met," the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports.
And Memphis’s WREG-TV has an interesting report in which Childers distances himself quite a bit from Mr. Obama. Watch HERE.
"Senator Obama hasn’t endorsed my candidacy," Childers says. "I have not been in contact with his campaign nor has he been in contact with mine."
Obama’s campaign has tried to help Childers, as you can see on Obama’s website.

Santorum: Money Will Not Defeat Obama, Ideas Will
Rick Santorum's Full Speech at CPAC 2012
If Obama is the nominee, he will be the biggest drag on down-ticket Dems in recent memory. Particularly in the south. His record and associations provide a wealth of material with which to paint him as extreme and out of touch.
Dems should reconsider the suicide pact they’ve made with Obama. Just cause you’re on the ledge doesn’t mean you have to jump!
Posted by: NJH | April 30, 2008, 10:16 am 10:16 am
Here it is! THIS is the repercussion of an Obama nomination! If anyone really believes the GOP isn’t foaming at the mouth to run these Rev. Wright ads, I own a bridge in Brooklyn I’d love to sell you. These ads are also running against down ticket Dems in Georgia too. THIS is why we witnessed the theatrics/CHARADE over the last week between Wright/Obama. It was all a set-up so Obama could disavow Uncle Jeremiah because the SD are going to jump ship after these down ticket Dems LOSE because of the Rev. Wright ads that the GOP are running against them. Thanks a lot Mr. Hope. We could lose Senate and House seats because of you and the people you hang with.
Posted by: Vickie | April 30, 2008, 10:22 am 10:22 am
When the rock star candidate starts hurting the candidacies of down ticket democrats, that cannot be a good thing. If Clinton is so vile, then why aren’t the Republicans launching these types of ads with her in them?
Posted by: LOM | April 30, 2008, 10:24 am 10:24 am
There is written proof that Obama and Wright discussed the “disowning’ strategy last year.
If this was a scripted fallout it was a massive failure in execution and timing.

Obama will win 30 states and he’s doing it with record voter turnout. He just started a 50 state registration drive. It’s not logical to say that Obama will be drag on the down-ticket races.

And this is why another super came out today for Obama, because he is a drag on the Party?
I am sure you are aware that these super do not just come out. They have been there for some time, and in coordination with the campaign they are released.
There are more to come. Watch everyday.
Sorry I didn’t mean to taunt.

Not to speak for anyone else, but let me pose my theory on why this is good news in the eyes of Obama supporters.
The Republicans have been blatantly singling Obama out and attacking him with gusto. If they’d waited until he was the nominee, it would only be about the general election.
However, since they’ve done so for so long now during the Primary season, there’s obviously an effort to influence that primary result. They don’t want Obama to win, meaning they don’t want to face him in the general election.
They are so supremely confident that they can defeat Clinton that they’re not even hedging their bets a little bit and attacking her on occasion.
THE REPUBLICANS ARE ABSOLUTELY SILENT ON CLINTON.
Think about it. If roles were reversed, the dems would do the same thing, they’d attack the candidate they are least excited about competing with.
This ratifies Obama supporters beleifs from day one about Clintons lack of electability. It confirms our suspicion that the Clintons freighliner full of bagage and dirty laundry, coupled with how polarizing they are, would galvanize and strengthen the Republicans, which they desperately need this year.
In short, told ya so, Clintonites…

The Obama campaign and the media going along with this great story line of electing the first black nominee has spun totally out of control, and the DNC has not stepped up and shown leadership when it is needed. The superdelegates and the DNC have been held hostage by the idea that they cannot go agains the black base of this party, and look what is happening. The Rezko trial starts up again tomorrow and the judge has already had to have one bench conference to try and keep Obama’s name from coming up. This is not good. To the media: Hillary may not be as sexy as Obama, but the story of the first woman president is a good one, and there are millions of woman and men who would watch.
GO HILLARY 08!

I think it is widely known down here in the South that only blacks vote for Democrats. It is political suicide for any Southern Democrat to insult OBama. This is a fact. They have to ride this storm out with him, whether they like it or not. But if the lady doesn’t know Obama, then she doesn’t know him. I don’t think this is even news worthy.

I am am Obama supporter, but i partially like your reasoning here. How about we wait to see who wins? I think it is unfair to blame the Democratic leaders for Hillary’s problems. If she wins, then she wins. Rev. Wright has handed her gift after gift after gift after gift. If she cannot win Indiana by double digits and cut Obama’s win in NC to within 5 points, then she has issues. Right now Hillary is looking more electible than Obama, no doubt about that. But there is a lifetime between now and June. If Obama cannot reverse this trend, then he’ll most likely lose.
Posted by: Kevin | April 30, 2008, 10:50 am 10:50 am
This is why Obama should not be the nominee of the Democratic Party! Moderate and conservative Democrats will have no choice but to distance themselves from Obama and his mentor Rev. Wright! They will not want to be seen with him and he will not be an effective campaigner for moderate Democtats in the South and else where and that spells trouble not only for Obama but congressional Deomcrats as well! You know it is bad when you have to distance yourself from the top of the ticket! It is time to face reality and say that Obama is not the same person we thought he was in Feburary and now is the time for all Democrats to support Hillary who is the only Democrat left that can win working class voters and help moderate Democrats keep their seats this fall! If we do not do this then I fear that a “Hard Rain is Going to Fall” in November!!!

It’s no surprise. Believe me, it’s not Wright. It’s Obama’s skin color. When you hear the ad, it has these jungle type noises. Are you kidding me? Want proof. Yesterday, Ben Chandler of Kentucky endorsed Obama. Today, his office said they got 300 calls from the district, w/ almost all opposing his decision, dribbling out racial garbage. Sorry Hannity, you might want to look at Appalachia first, before you explode your head. The overt racism is unbearable. That doesn’t excuse hate-monger Wright, but just sayin it’s not a one way street.

These people know Hillary better than we do. Shouldn’t we be concerned about this? Obama has not had problems like this. ANY COMMENTS OUT THERE ABOUT THIS?

Give me a break! Republicans are attacking Obama b/c he’s the front-runner and looks likely to get the nomination. They’ve got a few extra months to bash him – why wait? The conspiracy thinking that they really want HRC as a candidate is ludicrous — yes, they’ll attack her too if needed, but they’re much more concerned that HRC can pull moderate Republicans into the fold than Obama can — polls show that a fair number (12% in PA) of republicans are voting for Hillary as a safer choice (economy, natl security) than would vote for McCain whom they fear would be too much like Bush whom they (now) hate.

This is just the beginning…Obama and his
associations have given the Republican Party carte
blanche to use him in every ad for Republican
Candidates in races this year whether for Senate,
Congress or Assemblyman. Whatever.
Obama has opened the door and now his
associations are the kiss of death for any Democrat.
Whomever endorsed him or supports him will now
be tainted with the Obama Drama curse.
This is going to increase if he ever gets to be the
nominee. I very much doubt any super delegates
who are considering which candidate to vote for
will have to think twice about this.
We want the candidate that can beat Mac…not the
one who will make all the Republican candidates
look the better choice.
Pastor Wright’s reputation has been ruined and
Obama has suffered greatly. This is an
insurmountable obstacle to overcome.
The Stop the Drama Vote for Obama is over …
henceforth Obama is a Drama Queen, Girlie Man
and it is time for all of us to roll the credits on this
candidacy.
Indiana and North Carolina primary results will tell
volumes to the DNC and Superdelegates.
We need a candidate who can take on Mac…and

1 > Republicans are not afraid of Obama, why should they be? They can paint him quite easily as inexperienced, liberal, tied to the Kennedy/Kerry block of the Democratic party, supporter of big-govt program which means more taxes/higher spend, weak on national security and military. All of which works! Throw in personal stuff – things that Michelle has said, his back&forth on Wright (“I haven’t heard these things”, “I can’t disown him”, “Now I can reject him”), other statements – and they can pull the base together and get independents.
2> Less hard to attack HRC if only b/c so much of it is out there already. All they have to do is say Whitewater/cattlefutures/etc and the media/public reaction will be that this is all old stuff — where’s the proof? They can call up the Bosnia story – but the public’s heard it before. Best they ccan do is attack her proposals (talk about the issues!) and they can question Bill’s business arrangements and donors to the foundation/library — which may appeal to some but also runs the risks of HRC drawing parallels to Reagan/Bush Sr dealings and activities of other senior Repub politicians who come and go from administrations.
You can look for conspiracies and reverse psychology all you like, but life/business/politics is much faster and simpler than that. In other words, the Repubs are attacking the candidate they think they will run against b/c it gives them time to test out different messages before they go national and more time to bloody/define him to the public before the election run begins.

People don’t want to be associated with Obama anymore.
Simple as that.
Whether he denounced Wright or not — Obama is damaged.
The Republicans are ganging up on him not because he is a strong candidate— ( they want you to think that he is stronger cause he is easier to cream than Hillary in the GE )
( doesn’t help Hillary that Obama has more ( *** Bought *** )delegates—
If you are a Republican Candidate— you want to go head to head with Obama. Cause winning is the name of the game.
And I also DOUBT that Rev. Wright would stay quiet. He is retired. He has a book coming out. He is beloved by his parishioners. He will speak again. And People will give him the attention he wants.
Will be get another speech from Obama again?

This story broke on 23 April. It’s among Obama-Axelrod’s truth troubles somewhat eclipsed by the media blitz on Obama’s on-again, off-again relationship with Jeremiah Wright. Alice Palmer’s another one.
“Sen. Barack Obama continued accepting donations from oil company executives and employees last month even as he aired ads in which he stated he took no oil company money, his campaign finance reports show.”

Melissa =
Actually what McCain has said is that he knows economics less than defense and national security, and that he’s not as knowledgeable about the intricacies of economic relationships as economists and experts. Not quite saying he doesn’t know the economy.
As for “getting out of Iraq”, both Obama and HRC are twisting the truth to some extent and acknowledging that circumstances on the ground (in Iraq and the ME as a whole) will dictate final decisions. Also, they’re glossing over the fact that it takes time to get troops/materiel out of a country — it’s not a few months, more like a few years. So you don’t really know what they will do.
Of all of them, McCain has come closest to saying his true position – we’ll stay there as long as it takes to get the job we need done done. No pandering timetables, no fake promises.
People who say “we need to get out of Iraq as soon as possible” should also consider what that means. Some troops/some equipment, all troops/equipment? Take out the Army and Marines, but leave ships in the Gulf and Air Force resources overhead? What’s the world’s reaction likely to be if the US pulls out and Iraq dissolves into civil war? What about Iran – let them go in or keep enough troops to keep that from happening? What will the ripple effect of civil war be on neighbors such as Turkey (NATO!) and Kuwait, or others (and on the price of oil then?) What about the “world’s largest embassy” — pull those people or leave them w/no protection?
You seem to have all the answers — go ahead, share.

It is democracy. Every one has his/her own right to support his/her own candidates based his/her own favor and knowledge. Unfortunately, at least 50% of dems won’t share with your view so far…and currently it is not good trend for Obama either..

I don’t expect anybody to put any names or faces to the Clinton’s past but pick up a history book and turn off your damn TV.

Sandy ,
no he said he didnt know economy because they had talked about it because the view claimed he never said that and it was proven he did… either way he worded it he still doesnt know economy and it shows when he wants to keep going with what is going on with the war in iraq – and it shows he knows little about the safety of americans on top of that- you dont think that other countries are going to let us have a endless amount of money we can get from them do you? do you think that with our men dying over in iraq is helping our stand against bin laden? do you think that a attack on us from bin laden would be easily resolved with our troops as it is now? they are tired and we have no money to launch a attack on bin laden and it only gets worse every day!!! and those are the things people are worried about.

If Hillary truly had a better chance against the Republicans than Obama, don’t you think they’d be trying to damage her right now to tip the nomination to Obama? But they’re not. They’re being COMPLETELY SILENT on Hillary, and directly targeting attacks on Obama almost exclusively in the contested remaining primary states.
If this was about the General election, they’d be more nation-wide, and if they thought Hillary was more of a threat than Obama, she’d be getting hit right now.
And of course down-ticket folks are going to brace themselves against these attacks. Do you really think it would be any different with the shoe on the other foot?
Wake up. Obviously the Repubs have chosen their preferred candidate to compete against, a resounding Republican vote for Clinton that grows louder the more silent they are about her.
Remember, you are democrats. No republican should decide your candidate for you, and you shouldn’t be buying into their tactics. Think!

Melissa…. you’re still bootstrapping on the McCain/economy question but not worth arguing about it. But, you didn’t really answer the hard questions did you? You can conflate troops in Iraq/bin laden, but doesn’t change the facts that there are concrete issues in Iraq that need to be considered. If not by the public, then by the Commander in Chief (to be!).

I am sooo angry about this mess. I blame Obama and his campaign for even running this time. The DNC has enough problems. He is an untested, unvetted candidate. He may be refreshing but new to the game. He should have waited four years until he cleaned up some questionable associations and past affiliations before his decision. He just jumped head first into the run for president. Now, the Democratic Party is in jeaoparty of losing in the November if he is the nominee. I am a Hillary supporter but I’m a realist.

Lois, in California:
I could not agree more. Obama was not vetted. The Clintons stated this a very long time ago and no one listened. Now the runoff from the DNC’s tragic Obama fixation is hurting other candidates. This is just plain wrong.
Poor Childers is now being attacked over Rev. Wright!! Awful!!! Shame on the DNC for not doing their job.

Superdelegates better vote for who can beat McCain in Nov. and forget about the popular vote in their districts. Ohterwise- why have superdelegates. If Iowa & the other early primaries were to vote today- the outcome would overwhelmingly be for Clinton. Obama cannot win in Nov. and this country needs a Democrat in the white house.

Remarkable. Five pieces on Obama and where he went to church. But not one article on the remarks of Paul Wolfowitz, the US Deputy of Defense and one of the chief architects of the Iraqi War that has killed 4000 Americans and wounded at least 100,000 Americans.
“The American government was “pretty much clueless on counter insurgency” in the first year of the war” Wolfowitz and his neocon allies were the American government. They planned and executed this disaster. Does he plan to apologize to the families of the dead? Doesn’t this merit at least as much attention as where someone went to church?

Doug, Obama supporters get a very bad reputation because of name callers like you. Do you think that slamming the only two term democratic president since FDR – that’s 60 years ago and counting – helps the democratic party? Or are you just out to destroy it and the entire Clinton family, including Chelsea who as far as I know, is a wonderful young woman. This is why Obama needs to go, he is bad for the Democratic party and bad for Americans. This whole Obama debacle will bring the whole party down.

Chelsea has proven herself to be as manipulative as her parents. She refuses to answer tough questions. Refuses to talk to the media. You can’t have it both ways. You can’t go out there and pimp your mother and not answer questions.
BTW, how did she get a hedge fund job that pays her $200K a year? Is that hedge fund guy a Clinton donor and fundraiser? Well that’s like an extra $200K in illegal campaign contributions in my mind.
But that’s not surprising. The Clintons always do illegal things: Whitewater, Travelgate, Filegate, Cattle Futures, Madison S&L, Rose Law firm conflicts of interest, Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky, etc.

News that Sean Hannity will next bring up Obama’s connections to Aiham Alsammarae, who has connections in Iraq with Rezko, and Rashid Khalidi, a former PLO leader. Also, Obama was connected with Edward Said, another PLO leader, in the late 1990′s. The longer Obama stays in this race, the worse he makes it for ALL Democrats running for office. Nice to see that Michelle is out campaigning with him today! Politics of Political Expediency!!!

Thanks for sending out an alert about Obama.
We are living and working in Kenya for almost twelve years now and know his family (tribe) well. They are the ones who were behind the recent Presidential election chaos here.
Thousands of people have been displaced by election violence (over 350,000) and I don’t know the last count of the dead.
Obama under “friends of Obama” gave almost a million dollars to the opposition campaign who just happened to be his cousin, Raila Odinga, who is a socialist trained in East Germany. He has been trying to bring Kenya down for years and the last president threw him in prison for trying to subvert this country!

Melissa – You brought up the war issue, I was merely pointing out all the ramifications of “getting out now.” Since you clearly aren’t prepared to discuss it, we’ll drop it. If you’re worried about the economy, tell me how Obama’s proposed plans (identified costs exceed HRC’s by about $100 billion) will be paid for? What’s he giving up? What’s highest priority so we know what the probable tradeoffs will be?
(PS – on the “screw em” comment – pls do remember that people in the room do remember the conversation differently, and that even the person who first wrote about it notes that:
– He pointed out that everyone in that room back in ’95 was angry about the Republicans taking over Congress. The only person who wasn’t angry was Bill, who (as the HuffPo piece also explains) talked about the importance of reaching out to white southerners.
– He noted that the Hillary from ’94-’95 was a MUCH different person from the Hillary in Bill’s second term. She had moved from ideological liberal to a pragmatic leader. He says his 2001 book, in fact, has a chapter on this transformation.
– He is a Hillary Clinton supporter and has given Clinton money.

So Doug are you impersonating David Shuster now? Did you know sexism is bad? Just like racism is bad? Sexism seems to be okay with Obama supporters, just not sex out of marriage. And having friends that bomb the pentagon and police stations, and hurting the policemen working inside the police stations when the bomb goes off is okay. It’s hard to understand what is okay in Obama world. One day Wright is okay, the next day, Wright is not okay. Obama is a flip flopper of major proportions. If Obama drops out of the race now, before the Rezko trial really gets interesting, he may save the democratic party from appearing more corrupt than the Republicans. But Obama won’t do that – it’s all about Obama. Not the American people.

Doug – Chelsea’s starting salary at McKinsey five years ago was in the neighborhood of $100K — not unusual for a Stanford grad with a masters from Oxford going to work at a global consulting firm.
As for the usual litany of “illegal” things — suggest your time may be better spent petitioning Congress for your share of the $70 million spent by Starr/Ray be reimbursed since clearly they were so incompetent as to head up a 6-yr investigation which turned up a horny president and a blue dress … and nothing else! All because of America’s racist obsession!
All any intelligent mind has to ask is, “How really harmful can mere rhetoric of Right be to ANY American?” Who is bruised?
It’s not like Mr Right is making threats of harm against the nation or against individual Americans?
911 demonstrates to the world that Americans will lull itself to sleep with non-issues when real threat to the nation arises.
Americans will be fast asleep, lights out, “when the bridegroom cometh”

Melissa -
1. Are you the same person you were a few years ago? Most people do change over time, depending on what they have to deal with/witness. It’s convenient for you to say HRC’s changes are an act, but I’d rather believe that people (especially those going through the kind of crucible HRC did) do change.
2. Promises / proposals are defined according to a set of conditions. If the conditions change, the outcome will of course change. Holding jobs/Buffalo against HRC ignores the impact of funding/priorities in a Republican administration/Congress, ignores domestic and global economic conditions, and ignores reality. It’s not as if she put her programs in place and they didn’t accomplish the goals; she couldn’t put them all in place because of circumstances beyond her control.
3. A one-sided perspective on health care reform is particularly galling. HRC made mistakes (which she’s acknowledged) but republicans/lobbyists also spent fair amount of time and money lining up in fierce opposition. Blame HRC if you want, but also blame everyone else involved who put their interests above the “general welfare”. At least she made an effort, put up a fight, and -when it didn’t work – worked on smaller but related objectives and kept plugging away at the issue.

It’s called “GROWING” and Hillary has…. into a wonderfully strong, bright, knowledgeable, woman who can think on her toes and speak without benefit of teleprompter.

Q: why few Clinton attack ads?
A: why spend money when it’s not needed?
OBAMA is the current leader and easy target – Although the tactic is not a good one & easily tossed aside.
I’d suggest a cleaner fight at this point – since mudslinging really doesn’t do much good – especially when it doesn’t have much to go on.
We really need to get focused on why we need to vote for someone not why not to vote for someone. The issues please – that are affecting most, if not all of us – Democrat and Republican and Independent [aka the rest of us not in the first two].
We need to look for what people bring to the table to help us – not this extra fluff. How one chooses to worship / or not – and who they’re getting the message from – and what someone they know did during the candidate’s childhood isn’t important today – people change.
Lets move forward, not stay mired in the mud – lets look at the proposed changes and how we might play a role in helping to bring them about. The changes that need to be made are not all going to come from government. Many need to be changed from the people – taking an active role – pushing for those changes – in insurance, in work, in what we purchase.
Push Walmart and others not to buy from China and third world countries – don’t shop there – get others to do the same – or only but american goods they do sell. write to walmart and get them to change their buying habits. The same goes for Target and other places you may buy things from.
If you have problems with oil – become a shareholder and buy gas from only one vendor. Organize / Join forces with others to do the same. Make your voices heard. (When they make profits, you’ll at least get some of it back in dividends.)
All talk and no action – is part if what got us here. Complaining with no action is a waste of time and energy. Talk is cheap, action speaks louder than words.
A revolution is at hand – it can be peaceful – and orderly. Many have taken the first step toward being heard – register and vote. There are many other ways [non-destructive means] to get things done – make a change.
Change is also usually painful for most things. It usually comes at a price. What are you willing to do to make change happen? What are you willing to give up to make things happen that you feel need to change?
As a past Democratic President said, while campaigning for president …
Don’t ask what the country can do for you …. ask what you can do to improve the conditions you have problems with?

They said Bill Clinton couldn’t be elected. They said the same thing about JFK. If Clinton is the nominee there will be an army of freelance Hillary-haters waiting to step up to the plate to do the grunt work. She’s had almost no negative press coverage recently because the GOP knows she’s unlikely to be the nominee. Don’t be deluded into thinking she’s somehow immune from attack.

What’s worse, the guy who would have a preacher like Louis Farrakhan? Or a guy who would dispose of that preacher after using him for 20 years? Don’t vote for either guy.
Obama went on and on about his minister forever. He copycated his sermon for one of his books and said I’m a Christian and you can tell from my church.
Now the minister turns out to have a strange belief system with a lot of terrible things to say about almost everybody.
What’s worse….a guy who would turn traitor on his own minister of 20 years. A guy who he was calling his “uncle” and his “mentor” one week and then totally disowns him the next?
Obama tossed his crazy uncle out of the train after he got done using him.
If Obama could make someone feel bad for Reverend Farrakhan, there is something really traitorous and wrong about Obama.
Posted by: Florida and Michigan Count | May 3, 2008, 9:48 pm 9:48 pm
Obama would have you rip 2 stars from our beautiful American flag.
Obama won’t even count active duty military from Florida or Michigan.
How can a guy who wants the country to salute a 48 star flag and throws his pretty crazy preacher to the dogs expect us to respect him?
God Bless our 50 United States of America.
He should have stood by his preacher too. He sat in those pews, gave that man $22,000, copied his sermon for his best selling book, used him for his 2006 speech at the DNC, and signed an oath to his value system.
He had that preacher marry him and baptise his kids.
Reverend Wright was a mess……but he was Obama’s mess for 20 years.
Stand by your mess. I don’t know if it’s worse that he’s so disloyal or that he chose such a church to begin with.
Either way. His character defaults are worse than Reverend Wright’s by far….stand by Your Man Obama.

Obama- Zero Experience Matters
Harvard Lawyer?
No.
He never argued a single case in a court of law.
Constitutional Law Professor?
Not according to the U of Chicago.
Obama was a Lecturer who never wrote a single article. Lecturers normally write articles too, but not Obama.
Illinois Legislator?
Not so much. He only passed legislation one year….and it was all written by other people. Again, he took credit for other people’s hard work and moved on.
Senator?
Where’s the beef? He was in the Senate one year before he started running for President.
Obama’s never done anything, for any community. His preacher was a black leader and Obama tossed him out of his train once he was done using him.
Obama has no experience and no character. His church is not what he described and he just threw his own minister out like yesterday’s garbage.
We are at war, and in the middle of a financial crisis. We need leadership not a pumped up resume, a lot of hot gas, and a treacherous ability to toss out his own chosen horrible associates.
