Michelle Obama Defends Her Candidate
ABC News’ David Chalian Reports: Michelle Obama pushed back against the notion that her husband is elite and out of touch while campaigning in Haverford, PA today. The potential First Lady ignored any reference to the more controversial portion of Sen. Obama’s remarks about people in small towns clinging to religion, guns, or anti-immigrant sentiment as an outlet from their economic frustration.
Before listing a litany of economic burdens on middle class voters — mortgage payment, rent, car note, gas, groceries — Mrs. Obama sarcastically told the sizeable crowd at Haverford College, "Maybe I’m missing something. Maybe I’m out of touch." She then administered a pregnant pause for effect.
Attempting to further demonstrate her husband’s regular guy credentials, Mrs. Obama told the college student crowd that the Obamas have just paid off their student loans a few years ago. "Now when is the last time you’ve seen a president of the United States who just paid off his loan debt? But, then again, maybe I’m out of touch," she repeated.
Perhaps Mrs. Obama was test-driving some of her newsy and sarcastic wit in advance of her taping an appearance on The Colbert Report set to air this evening on Comedy Central.

The fact that she can’t understand why people would be upset by BO’s comments prove that yeah, maybe she IS out of touch. Adding sarcasm to insults won’t help much. Refer to the first rule of holes.

The queen of bitter adds more insult to injury. Yes Michele, you are bitter and out of touch. Your school loans don’t compare with what other Americans are suffering, and yet, most of us aren’t bitter. As you and Barrack lounge in your 1.65 Million mansion in Chicago that indicted felon Tony Rezko helped you purchase, we’ll vote for Hillary.

Personally, I want a first lady who has enough sense to pay off her loans as soon as she can in order to save some money down the road.
The fact that she’s admitting to just recently paying off her student loans proves she just doesn’t get that simple math.

Yes I believe you are out of touch and I can’t believe it took you this long to pay them off when you were making 200K plus a year for over 10 years now between you.

Michelle already sees herself as First Lady, and is swaggering around the campaign trail like Obama can’t be beat. I hope, hope, hope, by November, people see the true colors of the Obama power couple and vote for someone else—anyone else!

That’s because most presidential candidates take some time in life and career to gain experience and wisdom before running.
This whole “obama was so poor” thing is really offensive. They’ve had money for a while and have the attitude of “new money” people. Snobby and condescending. Especially her.

Hey ABC and Mrs. Obama,
Since when are mortgage payments, a car note, groceries, gas, rent, etc. economic burdens?
Most of use out here in the real world think of these things as “life”.
More of us think of these things as responsibilities.
Even more of us think of these things as living the American dream, or stepping stones towards that dream – not burdens.
Yeah, your right.
You are out of touch.

From the article:
“Now when is the last time you’ve seen a president of the United States who just paid off his loan debt?”
My understanding is that student loans have 10-year terms–at least mine did. She’s been out of law school since the late 1980s, so her student loans should have been paid off in the late 1990s. He’s been out of law school since 1993, so his student loans should have been paid off about five years ago or so.
With regard to her quote, does she want a medal for repaying an obligation? Does she want a medal because he decided to go back to law school at age 29? What are we to do with that information?
Unfortunately, Clinton blew a golden opportunity. The Obamas are not economic elitists, but they are intellectual elitists. The problem is that they are probably the dumbest smart people in the country.
Silent Majority, it’s time to start weighing in.

The good news is that Obama will crush Hillary and, hopefully, we will get rid of the classless Clintons. Even better news: McCain will crush Obama, and send him and his spoiled brat wife back to Chicago. The bad news: it can’t happen fast enough and we have to listen to these two idiot Democrats whine, lie, parse, and spin for a few more months.

Mrs. Obama is another reason why Her husband shouldn’t be president. She has no idea. Obama is not a good patriot and clinton has no respect for the military, just look back on how she treated them when she was first lady. GO MCCAIN!!!!

The bottom line is that if obama or hillary get elected this country will slowly sink toward socialism and that is a slippery slope to recover from. I certainly dont want most of my paycheck go toward the goverment running every aspect of our life. I also like the idea of starting up my own business so I can have an opportunity to make alot of money and more jobs for the economy. They just dont get that and it is starting to make me sick…oh and the things that come out of Michelles Mouth sound like they are coming from Karl Marx himself…scary stuff

Don,
We’re conservative (Classical Liberals), that means that we don’t think anyone owes us anything that we haven’t worked for. Believing that the world/government owes you something is what the neo-libs, like possibly yourself, believe. What I find condescending in BHO’s comments is that we’re cynical about the government. Of course we are, we’re all supposed to be. Our founding fathers were cynical about government. And, for a very good reasons. BHO believes cynicism about the goverenment is bad because he believes that the goverment is supposed to provide all sorts of entitlements to people who have NOT worked for them (by stealing from the folks who are productive). Except for the unborn, of course. They are denied life, liberty, etc. Apparently–since they’re–punishment, they’re not “entitled” to oxygen.

Tom
The only problem with your reasoning is that those productive people aren’t productive without somebody doing the dirty work. Who’s going drive these productive people around in their limos when all the drivers died of curable dieases. Who are you going to hire to do sales when they are all starving because of know money to buy food. Obama is right people need a level playing field. A job is not a handout and any body who says otherwise has never worked a day in his life. When you think about these productive rich people, they should be caring enough to give a little to help others out. That why America is called the Land of Opprotunity.
And another thing, people do get punished with babies. I met one person who had a daughter who got pregnant in High school. The parents made her deliver the baby, tied her tubes, and force her to raise the baby. The issue of Abortion should be handled like gambling. If you do it then you alone have to answer to God at the pearly gates.

I suppose she thinks the taxpayers should have funded her expensive education?

I think Obama biggest strength is he is not attached to Washington. He’s probably more attach to Chicago then Washington. That allows him the freedom to be an outsider looking in from a different perspective. He will be different then Kennedy but I believe he will mobilize people like Kennedy did. The flip side is experience, but Obama makes for it with State government and public service experience.
Politicans become out of touch when they have been the political machinery too long. McCain and Hillary are excellent examples. I think Hillary already had a couple of character flaws, and politics amplified that. I believe McCain has a high moral standard but over the years politics has worn and beaten him down until he can’t speak his mind anymore.
America needs somebody to fix our politics. If we fix the politics, then things will get done. Politics is necessary in all governments, and it works as the conveyor belt of ideas for the government. When our politics are broken, no one communicates, everyone plays the blame game instead of coming up with a meaningful solution. That’s why I think we need a third party so two get out a control another steps in takes power and keeps the other two in check. Sort of like how are government is literally run.

Student loans are a killer. Obama understood this and got into the minds of parents and college students that are footing the bill. I have scholarships and still have take at least $10,000 a year in loans. There should be a serious reform in education, and how it is funded. I think they should increase R&D spending and take the money from the military. Because that how we got the Engine, the integrated circuit, and so many nifty items. I like his Infrastructure plan because it will put people to work. Check history, how did the country get out of the Great Depression. The government put them to work. There were no handouts, there were public works. Look at Chicago has an example. Mayor Daley put people to work fixing the Dan Ryan to put money into the Chicago work force. Today Chicago has the biggest service industry in the country.

Michelle Obama’s speech today was one of the BEST I have ever heard. She was genuine, sincere, and hit the nail on the head with all of her comments.
For those of you who think she is condescending, have you actually *heard* her speak, or are you relying on biased blogs and first impressions? It is often difficult to detect somebody’s tone in print form, and this can (and, on this blog, apparently did) lead to misinterpretation.

Any man running for the highest office in this country who refuses to wear a flag on his jacket, won’t put his hand on his heart, and who’s wife is sarcastic and isn’t proud of her country that affords her and her family so many privileges causes me great pause. The democratic party found the prettiest, most well spoken person they could find in their party and put him up as a presidential candidate. His record is on par with a small town mayor. What in the world qualifies this man to run the greatest country in the world? Frankly I think he’ll be another Jimmy Carter and put this country in a mess if elected. He’s pretty on the campaign trail, but has nothing of real substance to offer this country. This is not a time for trial and error. We need a real statesman to deal with the complicated international problems that we now face. Obama knows as well as anyone that we can’t just walk away from Iraq at this point and he’s misleading people to say otherwise. I hope you all think hard before deciding on a candidate that can’t possibly deliver the “hope” that he promises. How hard he must have studied the scripts for all the stumping he’s done.
Posted by: Debbie | April 16, 2008, 12:57 am 12:57 am
It had to take a mixed man and a white woman to run for president, for us to see how bad people still are ignorant, racist/prejudice and evil. When this should be something to rejoice about and bring us closer, it is the opposite. I had a dream that we had a war right here in the US, I could only remember smoke, fire, complete chaos everywhere, people walking with guns with fear and anger in their faces and I was standing, just looking and not believing what I was seeing, this was my real dream and I knew it was here and not Iraq or any other place, I have not and don’t plan on going anywhere else. To me it was a warning of a country that needs to come together and make things right for everyone, or else hell is gonna break loose, far worse than it has already.

You guys are all nuts…to get so wrapped up into the hype of politics. The bottom line is the issues. while you’ all are fussing about who said what and who is associated with who…why not think about what that person can do for you…If you look at the dems both candidates have most of the same solutions. So, instead on voting on the issues that may or may not affect you, you rather focus on petty things that in the long run is irrelevant to you. This country is going down hill. So, you wouldn’t vote for OB b/c he’s arrogant or Hillary b/c she makes too much money. But you would vote for McCain because you don’t like the other candidate personality…reality check: These people will never be your friends. All of these people are not perfect and will never be perfect…and the last time I checked they were human being. As if any of you are perfect…wow God forbid they say something that may offend someone as if you’ve never done it before. God forbid you were associated with a person, you may think has crossed the line once or twice before…however you’re still associated with them. Wake up people!!! You’re taking this petty thing way to seriously. Focus on the issues and how it will affect your lives. I’m an Obama supporter, however if he didn’t get the nomination, well guess what the next best person would Hillary for me. Focus on the Issues people…come on!!

The Clintons gift to charity? Oh! You’re referring to that foundation they established (in the name of A Clinton charity) to hide those contributions that still hasn’t been donated, even half their contributions to a needy cause. And take a more in depth look at all that money (over $100,000,000) they made in the short eight years out of office and who/where it came from. So whose the elitist in the bunch? THINK AND GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. Don’t be so quick to ridicule and pass judgment. Obama and Michelle aren’t trying to hide anything from us. They are a young couple that dares to make a difference. As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Obama has fought to strengthen America’s position in the world. Reaching across the aisle, Obama has tackled problems such as preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction and stopping the genocide in Darfur.
I believe Obama will lead the world to combat the common threats of the 21st century: nuclear weapons and terrorism; climate change and poverty; genocide and disease, and MORE.

Sure, he’ll reach across the aisle as long as he doesn’t have to get out of his seat. He is cemented into the left. Opposing handguns, in favor of partial birth abortion, in favor of early release for sex offenders, children are penalties.
Michelle is obviously his soul mate. Vowing to place black Americans first and foremost, actively working on a board that put over 150 Colorado workers out on the street when they closed a pickle plant.
Yes, I have read her thesis and the many references she makes to the “lower class” blacks. Not the lower income or disadvantaged blacks.
They are both elitists. Remember that Marx (the communist not Groucho) said that religion was the opiate of the masses. I guess in the 21st century Obama believes religion is the “soma” of the masses.
