Obama Discusses the ‘Provocative’ Rev. Wright Sermons He’s Attended

ABC News’ Tahman Bradley reports: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has admitted, in the past, attending church when Rev. Jeremiah Wright, his former pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, has made controversial comments, but he has never explained what he heard.

Until now.

Obama, in an interview broadcast on "Fox News Sunday," said he’s been on hand for worship services that included "provocative" messages delivered by Wright that have touched on race and issues plaguing the black community.

"He will talk about the failure of fathers to look after their children in ways that, sometimes, people might be taken aback by. He can use street vernacular in his sermons in ways that people wouldn’t expect to hear," Obama said.

Obama continued, "He has certainly preached in the past, when I was there, about the history of race in this country in very blunt terms, talking about slavery and talking about Jim Crow. The problem -– and I’ve pointed this out in my speech in Philadelphia -– was, where often times he would error, I think, is in only cataloging the bad of America and not doing enough to lift up the good. And that’s probably where he and I have the biggest difference."

Careful to point out that he does not endorse all of Wright’s sermons or the way in which they were delivered, Obama said, "I go to church not to worship a pastor but to worship God." Obama also said his vision for the country is much more hopeful than some of the black elders who grew up in a more racially charged America.

Wright has been in the news after a weekend of high profile events, including an interview with PBS’s Bill Moyers.

Obama expressed regret that the man who married him and his wife Michelle, and the church he’s called home for more than 20 years, have been the subject of close press scrutiny.

"That church family that’s been built there does outstanding work, has been, I think, applauded for it’s outreach to the poor — he (Wright) built that ministry and I think that people need to take a look at the whole church and the whole man in making these assessments."

Watch Obama’s comments on the "This Week Sunday Sound" webcast.

Sen Obama does not endorse all of the Rev’s sermon……..
The question is which ones does he endorse for political gain???
Which ones does his family in particular his wife believes in ???
Why is Sen Obama has made associations with a lot of muslims who are anti-americans???
These questions need to be answered.

Thinking…I have been going to the same church for 12 years. Yes, I am there to worship God not my Pastor but I am there as well as my children to learn from my Pastor. If my Pastor said any of the things that Rev. Wright said, I would be out the door the very FIRST time anything like that was said. You mentioned honesty. Do you really think Obama is an honest person??? Get real.

Those of us who want to examine Obama’s controversial and racist connections are not unfairly attacking Obama -
We are choosing not to bury our heads in the sand and hope for the best. We did that in ’00 and ’04 and look where it got us.
Obama’s explanation is not credible. On one hand, he says that the “biggest difference” between himself and Wright is that Wright doens’t say enough good things about America. yet Obama also tries to back away from Wright’s racist comments. Which is it, Obama – the racism or the anti-Americanism – that you disagree with most?
And if Obama is a non-racist patriot, how could he possibly sit through those sermons and not be offended?
The answer is easy: Wright is powerful in Chicago, and Obama needed to carry Chicago’s black vote in order to get elected to the senate. Only now, when it is uncomfortable, does Obama attempt to back away.
Typical politician. THIS is the “new politics?” I don’t think so.
When will the country see that the emperor has no clothes? Probably in November,

If only Obama would have come under this same press scrutiny, the Dems would not be in this mess! Barack is a con man. Or as the good Rev. said…..A politician……..

Obama is on record as saying he would have left the church if he heard any of the provocative things Wright is documented as saying. Now he finally admits that of course he heard them. He has lied. He remained in the church despite hearing these things. This is not an embellishment, this is not taking credit for a bill here or there — this is a big fat lie which speaks to his beliefs, values and core character.

Rhat separatist message is designed to keep peole in the black community, under the thumb of their leaders and scared to participate in the larger society. It is very deleterious.

I believe that someone can listen to others, even a preacher, and not agree with or begin to think like others when they are strong personalities – just as Obama. This is ridiculous for some people to think just because Obama listened to this man for years that this is how Obama believes and thinks! Too many church goers believe & feel a certain way just because their minister/preacher/pastor say that’s how they should believe….Thank goodness that Obama is a stronger person than others.

Bottom line for this election is that Obama is a junior Senator with very limited experience. He is just not qualified to be our president. That’s my only issue.

LogicalThinker…how about Obama’s children, do you think they have “strong Personalities” as well? Your comment wasn’t very “Logical”.

“Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me” was written, I was told, by a former captain of a slave ship. Wright, who seems to me a BITTER man, was undoubtedly referring to America’s failure to repent completely of its “original sin” of slavery and subsequent racism when he said, “God damn America for treating people as less than human.” I was raised in a European immigrant Catholic church where we were taught you do not take the name of the Lord your God IN VAIN. But I was taught it is not blasphemy to invoke damnation on sin.

Rev. Wright again!!? This is like the old Porky Pig cartoon, when he eats too much food — then, he has a dream that he is forced to eat waaaaaay too much food.

The media and conservative pundits are being too glutonous here, and the Ironic Punishment Division will set things in perspective!

Someone who really loved and appreciated America would have picked up his family and left Wright and that church behind. He stayed for more than 20 years, got married by Wright, had his kids baptized by Wright, made the church the biggest beneficiary of his charity, and embraced Wright as “his spiritual mentor” and “sounding board” and put him on his campaign team!

FYI – I am a Phd in Math and I will not vote for Obama.

People need to learn more about all religions and the style of sermons of each. Rev Wright is not a racist nor a bigot. He is simply a peacher who is reaching out to others in ways they can relate to. By pointing out wrongs, one can think of what is right. By damning something one can insist on change. His style is simular to fire and brimstone. I would suggest that everyone study all religions, visit different churches, then they can better understand. Don’t change your beliefs just be open-minded so you can better understand others.

The truth is that Obama does have a way to input to Rev. Wright..it is called get up and leave the Church. Sen. Obama has a history of questionable judgements in the people he surrounds himself with for political advancement. He also has had relationship with Rev. Meeks, a rev. with other racist statements. I dont mind Sen. Obama is a black/white man… but i do mind that he seems to think the white have on himself is not as important and his black half. I do hope that he will embrace the other half of himself, but i will not vote for someone who has made comments and let his staff say that white, older, people are not important and he can win without thier vote.

Please stop with this Reverend Wright. There are issues more important to our country such as 1) flight of capital taking jobs overseas 2) lack of revenue generation due to corporate tax loop holes 3) privatization of many of the functions of the army 4) big corporations lobbying our government for war to increase their profits at the expense of the tax payer 5) dearth of valuable information in the media to help us citizens make informed judgment ……

Obama is a racist. You can judge the character of a man by the company he keeps. If the American people want a husband and wife in their capitol, to welcome dignitaries of other countries, think what that says about our citizens when they see what sort of message they and their children spew from their mouths. Who will he surround himself with when he gets in the White House? Evidently he is more influenced with the black half of himself than the white half.

Obama is not responsible for every word that comes out of someone else’s mouth just like none of us is responsible for every word that comes out of anyone’s mouth.
I am responsible for me and me alone. I have no control over anyone else including my children when they are not in my sight. Can all of you say that your kids have always done as you would have them do?

Guilt by association is still very much alive in our country. Those whose real antipathy to Obama because of his race justify their bigotry by manufacturing vitriolic innuendo based on half truths and statements taken out of context by someone he associates with just as during the McCarthy era. They should be ashamed to dwell on the trite when our country is so troubled by the economy, war, lack of good jobs, education and, yes, bigotry and racism. Lost in shallow attempts to assassinate character are the discussions on the candidates agenda to address our real problems so we can learn how he intends to recover from the disastrous mess the Republicans have got us into into the last 7 years.

It is really amazing how easily the media accepts this man’s lying. I am very sure if it was any other candidate it would of been unacceptable and big news.
I am so sick and tired of Obama with his I was not there, I did not hear anything, ok I heard some, now going on FOX and trying to explain what he heard.
The fact is he is twisting the truth over and over right in front of the eyes of the public and no one is calling him out on this, we are all listening to this nonsense over and over, each day with a new twist as to what he heard.

Posted by: SJ | April 27, 2008, 11:29 am 11:29 am

People who are truly interested in understanding Reverend Wright’s church and his ministry will listen to the interview by Bill Moyers.
It is not unpatriotic to question the government, nor is it racist to speak out against racism.
Many people will use this issue as a reason for not supporting Senator Obama, and this is, of course, their choice.
There will be other voters who choose not to support Senator Clinton’s bid for the nomination because of the $800,000 that she and her husband received in support of the trade deal with Columbia.
Perhaps the press can begin to report on the issues: jobs, the economy, health care, the war in Iraq, etc. and try to avoid this trend of character assassination through association.

Our country has made tremendous strides since the Civil War and since the 1960s Civil Rights struggles. In a recent poll (see the Smithsonian May edition) among juniors and seniors from all 50 states, an open ended poll of the ten most famous Americans had THREE African Americans in the top THREE and four in the top ten. Number one was Martin Luther King, Jr. The remaining three were women, number two being Rosa Parks. When the same poll was given to adults, the only changes made were among white famous Americans while blacks remained the same. Our days of bigotry are ending; so should inflammatory speeches.

The words of Wright that he preaches is to uplift his community. We from afar listen to these words and we don’t get that warm fuzzy feeling. The last couple of weeks, Chicago has been under siege with gang violence and murders. Do you think this a reflection of just what Wright beleives in? His words do make a difference and it shows in his community. Chicago needs better role models, and it isn’t Wright or some of his followers. Obama needs to go home and clean up his community, if he, god forbids, becomes president, he will abandon his community. There will be NO CHANGE! Obama is not electable.

I am sick about hearing about Obama’s church – thousands of Catholics filled stadiums to hear their religious leader even after they knew that priests molested thousands of children. The pews of Evangelical churches are filled with worshipers even after Hagee said the destructions of New Orleans was because of gays. The Republican party has embraced these racist and homophobic ministers for over 20 years, they have considered these ministers the party’s spiritual advisor.
Clinton is no saint – read Tom Hayden’s opinion piece in the NEw Republic. In the 60′s she worked for a law firm that had communists and defended the Black Planthers. FOLKS – wake up!
I don’t care where you worship, or even who you are going to vote for – PLEASE let’s talk about $3.60 gas, shortage of food, the recession, and of the Iraq war.

What was were the people in Wrgiht’s church doing when he was making these comments?

or cheering, whooping and hollering agreeing with the hate and racist statement?

Obama and Michelle embraced every word and thought of Wright. He preached a lot of anti-white, anti-American sermons. Michelle has repeatedly used remarks and actions which shows how deep she believes in them but the media doesn’t bring it up (only Clinton’s).
If Wright’s words were never revealed, Obama would still use Wright as his guiding force.
The media admitted having knowledge of this but chose to ignore it. What is this telling us??
BE SMART AND DON’T FLOCK TO THE LIGHT OF OBAMA.

I watched the Rev. Wright interview on Bill Moyers, and found his views interesting, thought-provoking, and not at all incendiary. He’s a charismatic speaker and, obviously, a thoughtful man deeply linked to his church and community. Moyers played a larger segment of the “GD America” sermon, and from that, one could see that he was talking about a statement by former Ambassador Edward Peck that “chicken have come home to roost.” This is true. Nature has a way of evening things out, and America should be more conscious about that. It’s happening in Iraq, right now. In any event, Rev. Wright has every right to speak his mind. The media, too, is irresponsible in pumping up the “spin” and “soundbites,” distorting the pastor’s message, and this, Rev. Wright confirmed, has resulted in death threats and threats of church bombings. Given how unfair this whole thing has been, perhaps, the “chickens will come home to roost” on the media and the right-wing spin machine, for concocting this charade. Slowly, but surely, Obama is going to turn this issue around on the perpetrators, and make fools of them. I’m going to enjoy watching it happen.

Look, lets call it like it is. Obama chose to hang out with radicals and racist people. Now lets get that behind us. It’s possible that he had a defining moment in his life and changed how he see’s things. Only Mr. Obama knows that for sure. However we seem to be talking about how many suits he has. We need to know how many pairs of shoes and that he eats pot roast for dinner. We found out he shot 50% at the foul line and can’t bowl worth a flip. What the heck does this have to do with anything? If he would stop trying to spin everything because he thinks he is now being seen as an elitest things would be a lot better. Mr. Obama you are an elitest and a young multi-millionare, so what? None of this has anything to do with your being able to handle the extremes and pressure of being the most public and powerful man in the world. Where did you ever get the idea that people don’t want you be elite and special? Just get on message without spin and let us try to judge you for what you really are. Which most of us just don’t know or can’t figure out. Relax, chill out, there’s a long way to go. If you don’t get the prize this time you sure should next time.

Obama is absolutely influenced by Wright for 20 years in that church. He have to play as a politician now. Obama cannot change to suit every one because he is him. Black liberation is the commom revenge thought inside Americans with black blood. The easy way to do is give more birth to black babies to increase polulation for future voters. Mary more white women and man to change their children’s color. Then the US power shall be in black’s hand and have the whiters bowed down like South Africa.

If our government follows policies that foster democracies rather than supporting whoever makes it easy for our corporations to do business, if we demand focus on human rights rather than property rights all around the world, America does not have to spend billions in arms. America will become the beacon of hope once again for all freedom loving people. If not for Iraq’s oil we will never be there. We will not have so many people hating us. If we listen to people across the globe we will find them not hating our citizens but hating our policies and what it does to their lives.

Wait a moment. How does Obama expect to sit with tyrants when he cannot and has not confronted his pastor.
First there was the spin that Obama did attend the Church when such things were said, then there was the statement by Senator Kerry to Imus that Obama slept through these sermons, and now there is a statment that Obama attended the church and did not ever speak to his pastor about the tone of the discussion.

Why if he heard these sermons, did he not step up to the plate, so to speak, with the American people? Because it wasn’t politically correct to do so. Now that people are stating his elitism and that he presents himself as above approach, on these issues does he come forward. As in the past when he didn’t look good in the polls , he always added that’s not what I meant, now he is adding gosh, I guess I did hear those things. He who states, he is not like those other guys in Washington, does come across as the status que!

Rev. Wright will be an issue as long as we are willing to focus on the trivial. I wish some of that anger could be directed as those responsible for the death of so many of our soldiers and the emptying of our coffers. What is more treasonous? A pastors sermon at his church or the propaganda by our administration that led us into this war?

Why don’t people get it. If he is lying about stuff like this what is he going to do in the WH. The other thing is who is going to have advising him in the WH?Personally, that is the part the scares me! His past associations with people don’t show very good judgement.

Senator Obama has more than answered every question that’s been put to him. Don’t accuse him of not answering questions just because you don’t like the answers he’s given. If you don’t like him, don’t vote for him. Its that simple. But don’t lie about him.

To me, the worst problem of the Wright affair is that Obama is looking everyday more ‘politician’ and less of a messiah. Without an aura of hope around him, I cannot see how he could win in November. And this is just getting worse.

Posted by: P. | April 27, 2008, 12:37 pm 12:37 pm

We now unhappily live in an American society where only specific ethnic groups can speak their minds under the guise of speaking in ‘provocative and/or blunt terms’. If any other ethnic group speaks in ‘provocative or blunt terms’ they are attacked as patently racist and summarily fired, censored, or worse. Not only is this mentality hypocritical and double-standard, it is patently absurd and socially unacceptable. Every ethnic group in America has the right to be heard, to be proud of their heritage, and the right to express their feelings about injustice without censor. These unalienable ‘rights’ are not exclusionary and certainly are not applicable to only one specific ethnic group. Living and rehashing the past on a daily basis not only ‘waters down’ the message, it becomes impotent, tiresome, and ethnically elitist. If one wants to speak about injustice in general terms; this could be applauded. To speak out against injustice in terms that are ‘selectively idealistic’ is fairly predicatable and tiresome.

Those on the left tend to spin the issue in the wrong way. I am not an Obama suppporter, however I am very aware he does NOT believe or feel the same way that Rev. Wright does. My problem with Barak Obama has been the way he has answered the questions surrounding the issue.
I can not speak for Rev. Wright but he very well may be a decent man. I have charitable groups but do good works. This brings me to my point!
When originally asked Obama stated he hadnt observed that side of Rev. Wright. Even though he considered the man a mentor. Obama also stated he hadnt been in the church when Wright made these types of statements. We know now this is not the case. Obama was being dishonest.
Two issues.. 1) Does this an example of Obama’s lack of experiance? YES, I believe so. His overall handling of the situation sure does..
2) If Obama is caught being less than honest about this type of situation.. What happens when the man gets in the White House?

South states basicly will switch to democrat!
But than it again depends if Hillary supporters will put their support after all those nast comments against her for Obama!
I don’t think so!
Probably PA< OH< MI AND FL will go for Mccain. And possibly Nj and MA may go red too! I guess McCain will still beat Obama!

There are millions of voters who are strongly behind Clinton and at this point it is looking like we will stay split and there are still states to go and PR is winner take all so lets just wait and see.But if Obama’s camp plays the race card one more time he will lose this because people from what I am hearing are tierd of it .And keep bad mouthing Bill Clinton and you will see how many voters it turns off there are many of us how think he was the best president in our life time and are not happy to see them trying to shut him up because he is good on the stump.and is helping and I repeat Helping Hillary.

Obama and his followers can spin issues as much as they want. Fact of the matter is people got carried away and were brainwashed by Obama’s empty words and speeches. And in process he won enough delegates and brainwashed enough people to get the needed support. Only AFTER that point that his dubious connections and links started coming out and thats when he started going down and his support drying up. Look at PA results. If you take out black-dominated areas (and by the way those are the only ones he won), he did not win a single place anywhere else in all of PA. From this point on he can only win black-dominated stares and primaries but thats about it. Now imagine if these issues had come out in the open before super-tuesday Feb 5. Obama’s campaign would have been down the drain and Hillary would have been the nominee in February itself. Obama’s delegate count and popular vote owes it to his own lies and coverups and also the MSM media who covered up his links and never brought out the true story. People still don’t know Obama and what all things he is covering up. He cannot be trusted and consequently cannot be elected as president.

The reason Hal, and none of the core HRC supporters will ever say this, is they are afraid of electing a black man as president. Racism is alive and well in this country, don’t let anyone tell you different. Bill, give a link to the sermon where he said that. I think you have twisted his word around. He did list a series of very questionable things the US government has done to other peoples that we never batted an eye about and then when evil is done to us we are indignant and say ‘We never!” well, we have! Let’s not be so high and mighty. But that wasn’t what hte sermon was about. it was about doing God’s will, and about how you must turn to God to try to do his will in good time AND bad. He was talking about church attendance being so high after 9/11, everyone wants God now, everyone’s asking God ‘how did you let this happen’, well, God let us do things, he lets bad things happen to us. “this is a time to examine ourselves. this is a time to examine our own personal relationships with God. it’s not a time to look at
God and ask him what he’s done for us, it’s a time for us to look at God and ask ourselves when is the last time we have tried to serve him…” …..that is all in that sermon too. bet you didn’t know that, huh?

I’m tired of people defending Obama’s links with Wright. He has continually changed his version of the truth, not only on this issue, but also with the Rezko issue, Ayres, and now the flag pin excuses. When are people going to understand he is no better, probably no worse, than any other politician, but a politician none the less. He simply isn’t qualified to hold the office on many levels, obviously not on using good judgment on his personal relationships. Any other candidate would have been eliminated a long time ago if they had been associated with Wright, not to mention Bill Ayres, to the degree that Sen. Obama has. What is this country coming to when people are so scared of not being politically correct that they would consider putting a person with such long time unpatriotic associations into office as President of the United States. It’s like an episode of the Twilight Zone, scary.

I am amazed how easily the wool is pulled over the eyes of the American public. This whole thing is a non-issue. You cannot and should not hold a candidate responsible for what his pastor or other associate says its just silly. The real issues are the War, The economy, Universal Health care, jobs and education. But the media and the stupid public want to talk about what an angry black pastor said in a sermon years ago. All I have to say is the democrats and Americans will get the kind of leader they deserve, Just like the present occupant of the white house. I’ve been reading some of your posts all morning. It’s sad that we STILL live in a racist society.
From the start, Senator Obama did not want (or choose) to have this competition about race, but it seems that folks like the Clintons, and the media, FOX News in particular is making, and maintaing that case.
It seems to be Senator Obama’s “flaw”.
He cannot change who he is physically, but I believe that he can change our way of thinking as far as race relations are concerned. We’ve already started the dialogue. Why don’t we continue this in a positive way?
The fact is that both Senators Obama, and Clinton have the same views as it pertains to our economy. Where they differ is on foreign policy.
The more I look at Hillary’s views, and/or tactics, the more it makes me question her party affiliation.

It’s annoying that people are still talking about “bitter”. No one cares that they were called bitter. What people care about, and clearly what Obama will never understand because he keeps saying the same thing in multiple ways, is that people actually believe in their religions and don’t turn to them because the government failed them.
For Obama, going to church is about politics as he says clearly himself in his book and in interviews. He turned to the church to better relate to the people for his community outreach. That’s why he can’t possibly understand why the comments bother people and neither can other socialists.

Being good a state that you should constantly self-examine and ask t he question often, am i good??? this is the basic stock her revisits in his sermons. Why does this make some folks so uncomfortable????

White America is not resposible for the plight of Black America. Everyone has the same shot at the brass ring. It’s no wonder some young black kids are growing up without hope. People learn what they live. If your parents were constantly telling you there was some evil force out there that was going to stand in the way of your American dream, you just might believe it. Fortunately, there are millions of new and young and open-minded voters who will be joining the process this November and they, not you, will be the decision-makers about where our country heads and who will be our president.

Lincoln himself, during the civil war, as it was waging on forever and the causualties were absolutely appauling, made a speech that God was angry with us. He said something to the effect “if ever drop of blood that fell by the sword now has to fall at the hands of this war in order to cleanse this society of the evil of slavery”…essentially lincoln said EXACTLY what Rev wright did. God doesn’t change what he thinks is right and wrong. Governments do, and God will be angry nd will damn governments that are evil, no matter who they be, even, yes, even if shockingly, that is us. We are not good unless we ARE good. That is wright’s message. Hearing it, in it’s entirety actually made me MORE of an Obama plan. how much better a state of society would we have now if Bush a nd Cheney heard and took such a speech to heart????

I am not voting for Barack because of his skin color. I could care less if he was a purple elephant he is better choice than the other two. I mentioned his skin color because most of the people who continue to bash him based on someone else’s comments are only grasping hold to this because they never had no intention to vote for him in the first place because they are voting based on color. My point if they are truly so concerned about who Barack’s pastor was and his teachings where is that same concern for the other two?? Why no demand from the so called concerned public about one man’s faith and not concern for the other two?? I mean if you ask me Hillary has shown she has no faith what so ever because she seems to have a problem with lying? It seems people are ready to vote someone who has lied several times into the office and someone who don’t know the meaning of economy but loves war into the office. While discounting a man who is not about the same ol politics and running the office for self improvement but running it for the betterment of the American people. Can him or any candidate make that happen who knows but I rather make my vote count towards a change of the same ol, same ol and go in the new direction because I see it this way that Obama can’t screw it up no worse than ol Bush has. A vote for Hillary or McCain is a vote for no change!

Some keep comparing Obama/Wright to Clinton or McCain and their pastors. The difference is they haven’t had a pastor or religious leader (at least that we know of) who was said by the candidate to have been their “spiritual leader” for 20 years, and said such hateful remarks on tape. Yes, I have had pastors say things in sermons that I did not agree with over the years, but nothing hateful and divisive like this. If my pastor had said, not once, but many times, such remarks, I would not have been back. I guess the bottom line is it is what you are comfortable with…and this tells me either that Obama was comfortable with such rhetoric and fit right in, OR, he needed Pastor Wright’s influence with the community to build a base for his future political plans. Either way, he needs to take responsibility for that. I also don’t believe, as Sen. Obama says, that he only talks about religion and God with Rev. Wright. I don’t care if it is a black church or not…if Clinton or McCain were plugged into the exact same scenario but with Rev. Pat Robertson or Hagee spewing some of their hateful and crazy remarks, I would feel the same way. This is the problem that so many have with Sen. Obama and his refusal to adequately answer the remaining questions. I also think Rev. Wright’s latest interviews are just part of a reconciliatory strategy cooked up by the Obama campaign to try and put some distance between the two.

I would say the latter.

One problem that Obama and Wright face is the fact that the majority of folks who “go to church” see church as a place where love, forgiveness, and eternal life is preached – the message of Jesus. None of the churches I have attended have used the pulpit for a political forum. IF Wright spoke in blunt terms to make a point – perhaps I can understand that. But I simply cannot and will not accept the ludicrous comment of “white america” being responsible for AIDS, for drugs in black communities. Those comments along with “God D*** America” are simply inflammatory rhetoric that have NOTHING to do with the message of Jesus. Shame on those of you who try to make excuses for his disgraceful words.

What is very clear from this blog is that we all need to see Obama in another debate to fully answer these character questions!!!OBAMA NEEDS TO DEBATE HRC TO PROVE HIMSELF TO THE AMERICAN VOTERS!! Obama actually needs the debate more than HRC to put all of these unanswered questions to rest once and for all. OBAMA MUST PROVE THAT HE HAS WHAT IT TAKES TO STAND UP TO MCCAIN IN THE GENERAL ELECTION DEBATES!! OBAMA MAN-UP AND DEBATE – FORGET THE ONE-ON-ONE WITH HRC. LET THE AMERICAN VOTERS ASK THE QUESTIONS TO BOTH CANDIDATES!! Let’s find out whether Obama can take the heat now BEFORE THE NOMINATION. IT IS ONLY FAIR TO THE VOTERS IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY WHO DON’T WANT 4 MORE YEARS OF REPUBLICAN BS IN THE WHITE HOUSE. OBAMA YOU ARE RISKING OUR PARTY IN THE GE BY NOT DEBATING HRC NOW!!!

The reason that no one is bringing up any mention of the pastors of McCain, Clinton, or Joe Lieberman’s rabbi is simply because no white candidate would even be allowed to run if he/she attended a church/synagogue where hatred towards another race was openly preached and tolerated. Joe Lieberman is as fine a man as they come and would not have sat for 20 yrs with a rabbi/minister who preached such unmitigated hatred towards others.

Rev. Wright said “God D***ed America for treating their citizens as less than human. He made reference to the Americian Indians, Orientals, and Hispanics. Not just Blacks…
When he made reference to “White” America, he was explaining people in power.
With that said, I’m not an advocate of Rev. Wright, I’m just merely doing my research.
I’m not voting for the things a candidate’s minister says, I’m voting for someone whom I believe will help my cause as an hard-working mother.
My 16 year old son has Autism, and the other day, his school TOLD me that He has to sign up for the selective service.
This is insane. So bloggers, I hope you see that this is where our country is headed…

It’s even worse when you read the complete sermon. Like somehow, because the evil pastor has a point to make, we should say, “oh OK” when in reality his whole premise is flawed. Black on black crime is not my fault, but I bet if Obama becomes president, we’ll hear about how white people are to blame for that, too. Stop feeling so guilty and enjoy your American dream. Set an example. Don’t make excuses for the behaviors that get people into trouble. Voice a standard and don’t give in. You are stronger than your guilty feelings.

I belong to the same denomination that O’bama belongs to and I have either listened to or read the entire texts of 87 of Jeremiah Wright’s sermons and I remain convinced he is part of the Black Power movement – just one step removed from the New Black Panther Party and Black Separatists which the Southern Poverty Law Center says are hate groups. Again, Martin Luther King, Jr. said the Black Power movement is a destructive philosophy.

Obama is so wishy washy. First he says he wasn’t in church anytime Rev. Wright made controversal sermons now he says he was? Obama is a politician as Rev. Wright says and will say what he has to as a Politician. This and the fact that he’s the most inexperienced (Might I remind you of the “Present” votes in the senate)he is the least qualified to do the job of the President. I have a degree in Human relations & guess who I’m voting for….Hillary Clinton, the most qualified, the one with the biggest heart and will address our concerns, she is the candidate for the people. Posted by: Nannie Turner | April 27, 2008, 2:34 pm 2:34 pm

If Obama knew he was going to run for president, he should have shown presidential judgement and gotten up and left the church, and sent a letter to Rev. Wright explaining the reasons why. Obama did not ever do that because Obama agreed with what Rev. Wright was preaching, and Obama CONDONED what Rev. Wright was preaching. Obama’s lame excuse, “I didn’t hear it,” has now turned into, “well, I heard some tough things”, well, that makes Obama a participant in a hate-filled church. Hamas and other terrorist organizations will tell you the good things they are doing in their communities if you ask them.

Obama said this man was his mentor, he bounce all political decisions off of him.
Wright, Rezko, Ayers, and his other friends are the wind beneath obama’s wings.
They taught him, encouraged him, worked hard to bring him from the south side of Chicago to here.
These are his best friends in life. He owes them.
They have so much vengeance and hate for America. They all have supported the Muslims, they believe everything America does not.
Putting Obama in the Presidency, you are giving them all the top secrets to this country.
He has proven they will remain a part of his life. He holds them near and dear.
Remember when he stood on national television and said he never heard rev. Wright say anything Objectionable in church.
Next day he came back and said he did. With a wonderful speech to call you racist.
Obama told Americans he bounced all his political decisons off of wright. Wright in his interview said obama has never talked to him about politics.
Obama always blames the Government for everything wrong in everyones lives and the country. He Never says anything good about the Government.
Wright taught him well.

A couple of books (he can say anything he wants), his legislative career as a state Senator in Illinois, a few votes in the Senate, and some “inspirational speeches”.

One thing that comes to mind is that BO is in the process of innoculating the public against something awful that will soon be reported about the things that came out of this pastor’s mouth. The Clintons are notorious about this innoculation approach. That way, when the news is finally out, they dismissed it as “old news”. The other thing that is obvious to me is that if this is a Christian church, when does the pastor preach on God’s Word? There is no scriptural references in the transcript or even captured on video. It’s not a church devoted to worshipping God, but a forum for racists.

Well said Machiavelli. There is much we DON’T know about Obama. Unlike HRC, whose sad little life has been on display for what? 30 years she says? Or Bush, whose stint at governor earned him the big bucks? Tis a shame we cannot simply make informed decisions based on truth – not spins and words misspoke by all. If you want to know the kind of people that will be in Obama’s administration, then look at the people running his campaign, on his advisory boards (Rev. Wright was on the campaign spiritual advisory board) and the people hooking their carts to Obama’s wagon. “Guilt by Association” is the BEST WAY to learn about how and with who a president will run a country. Look at the disaster named George W. Bush – Obama will be WORSE!

FYI, if we judge Obama based on his relationship with Wright, we’ll have to judge the Clintons for who they are. Bill Clinton cheats on his wife in case we forgot – in the White House – and not just once but at least four known times. The Clintons lie and have to be the most selfish couple in America. Do we care about that? Alot of people do which is why Clinton is unelectable. Ever wonder why McCain is going after Obama? He knows he can beat someone with a 58% unfavorable rating. Clinton is just looking for 2012. Make sure Obama loses, and try again. She could care less about the party – only about herself.
She cannot win even if the superdelegates give her the nomination -the youg voters, the blacks will not vote for her. McCain will beat Clinton. Clinton only purpose to stay in the race is for 2012 and tear Obama down. What a witch!!

Is this not the strategy employed to turn humans into killing machines? Even military training is based on indoctrination into believing that we are the on the right side and that enemy is evil. When we reduce the enemy to something less than human and elevate ourselves to the status of purveyors of justice extermination is guiltless.

You say that Jews got over it and moved on….You moron….the United States and Britain carved out all of the Palestinian people’s land and literally gave…that’s right…just plain gave…the Jews the Palestinians land to have their own country; and, the US gives the jews in excess of $2billion per year as a gift. I’m sure that black americans could “get over it” if they were given that type of aid. No, all blacks got was less than one generation of weak, so-called, affirmative action. Yet, in less than a generation, the white racists screamed “reverse discrimination”, while still giving billions in free aid to Israel!

Instead of talking ad nauseam about Reverend Wright and flag pins, here is a subject of which the public should be aware: Hillary and Bill Clinton’s connection with Monsanto. I recommend you read an open letter to Hillary Clinton from a Wellesley College Alumna, Carolyn Baker.

Unfortunately, Americans, regardless of race, are blinded by their “own” biases, devotion to a party system (no matter how flawed), a name (Kennedy=dysfunction), religion, and belief system. For many of us, research just doesn’t exist. We simply read/watch the paper/show that most closely resembles our own thought processes, and go from there. WE have the freedom to vote, and yet many of us still vote only for a party/system….not research the choices. I have no doubt that at least 2 of the folks who did not make either party’s down to the wire nomination would have been better than what is available. But again, that is my opinion.

Just having Barack and Michelle in the White House will help to spur the economy! Think about it from a marketing perspective. With the Obama’s you have an entire family to market about, all the family issues and kids issues front and center. What do we get to market with McCain and his pre-nup wife? Viagra? What do we get to market with Hillary and Bill? Hmmmmmmm…. come to think of it, how can we really be sure that Bill is NOT GOING TO EMBARASS US ALL AGAIN????? Wasn’t his spiritual advisor who helped him through Monica Lewinsky, JESSE JACKSON? Doesn’t Jesse have a love child? FIDELITY is a true American value! INFIDELITY has plagued our politics for too long. Look at Hillary’s superdelegate, Spitzer…involved with prostitutes. Look at the republican Senator Vitter…name on the prostitute’s mailing list. Has Bill undergone some verifiable treatment? No, really….no joke….thiink about it! How can we be so sure Bill and Hillary’s White House won’t become scandalous again? I DON’T WANT TO FIND OUT>>>>FIDELITY MATTERS>>>>VOTE OBAMA 08!!!

Sir, Wright is an ordained minister and does not have to keep quiet! Your disrespect of a preacher’s work is pathetic; and, your tone is condescending toward Rev. Wright, very similar to the Old Testament mentality that stoned the preachers of those days. Recall Luke 13:34, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not! And, Luke 13:35, “Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.” Well, sir, you can read the verse in your own bible and interpret “killest the prophets” and “stonest them that are sent unto thee” in any manner you like, and still it reflects your attitude toward Rev. Wright’s message. His message cannot be any more clear, REPENT OR GOD IS GOING TO DAMN AMERICA!!! You can form your own interpretation of “your house is left unto you desolate!” Just keep on acting stupid. You’ll find out just how desolate your house will become! Can’t be any more clear… Why should any nation be blessed for non-christian behavior? There are spiritual laws that preachers talk about; whereas politicians deal with legislated laws. Do you seriously think there will be no spiritual repercussions for killing? Can killed and tried to spin it, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” God cursed him, anyway! We have killed 4000+ U.S. Soldiers! 50,000 more severely wounded, killed 100,000 iraqi civilians and called it collateral damage, we have displaced 2 million Iraqis to Syria and only taken 30,000 into the USA, we invaded a sovereign nation that was not vital to our national interest nor security, we launched a “war of choice”… Do you think God did not see this? So, you just want to say, “am I my brother’s keeper?”….la di da…God Bless America….. NO, NO, NO….IT’S GONNA BE GOD DAMN AMERICA!!! FORGET POLITICAL CORRECTNESS, SOMEBODY BETTER CHANGE THEIR WAYS AND START REPENTING!!!

Sorry, nodevils, but if fidelity is a pre-requisite for politicians, then most need to step down now. Ted Kennedy being the first and foremost. Americans, sadly, proved that fidelity was NOT a factor in what they wanted in their president when Clinton was re-elected. As sad to say, they just don’t consider it to be important.

Posted by: JD | April 27, 2008, 3:39 pm 3:39 pm

Jack,
By the way, I don’t know what you mean about “get over it,” and “made something of themselves,” but making what you’ve made of yourself is nothing to be proud of.
You don’t “get over,” your history. I’m sure that you know this since all you talk about is your great America. You obviously didn’t learn all of history. I don’t completely blame you since most of you don’t read for yourselves or have much interest in the truth. However, most blacks know how to survive, and even thrive in your racist America, it’s called education and forgiveness, but not forgetting.

The Jewish plight and Holocaust does not even have a place on this board. That is a completely different subject and holds no merit when “discussing” Obama’s provocative Wright. To try and paint the “Holocaust” a systematic plan to literally eradicate a religious group as akin to slavery is absurd and beyond the pale. It is an affront to any historically educated person.

Posted by: stan | April 27, 2008, 3:59 pm 3:59 pm

I think the salient point is that he was clear that he went to church to worship god and not his pastor. This crossed into the realm of the ridiculous weeks ago. Rev. Wright served in the Marines, served his community through the church, has done more to help the homeless and poor than the city has done. I don’t agree with everything the man says, and unlike so many here, I bothered to read the entire text of the sermon. I find it difficult to believe that any educated person in this country is under the illusion the the United States has always acted honorably and honestly, that it is perfect and blameless for any wrongdoing in the world or at home. He is doing what every pundit and false patriot does, he is doing what the naysayers to Obama do when they site him as a reason not to vote for the Senator. Cherry picking and slanting information to push a point that has nothing to do with the subject at hand. Rev. Wright has lived and worked and tried to serve his fellow man in a country where he would read about lynchings of men that looked like him and no prosecutions. He grew up in a world where he was considered less than because of the color of his skin, and now seeing that history denied as being fact, and ignored as having happened. He served his country with distinction and honor only to come home to a place where his service did not matter. He learned and dedicated himself to a religion that espouses love and faith only to see that very same religion used to berate and abuse those in need. He is angry at the history of America and for at time looked only at that which would support and justify his anger. Just like those that hate Obama irrationally look for and find reasons, no matter how lame, to justify that hatred.

S – so if I understand you correctly the delegates from all states should be treated equally, but the delegates from some states should be treated more equally than others. Have you ever considered how insulting that line of thought is to those of us that aren’t in your list of ‘good’ states.

Don’t endore it…. You had 20 years buddy to show that you disagreed by getting out of the church. Such lack of judgment says a lot about what you ‘really believe’ and your inability to lead America. And for those of you who try to excuse his allegiance by saying you don’t agree with everything your pastor says should look closely at what your spiritual leader is saying. It is is something that promotes hatred and racism, then you need to get out or you by association are endorsing those views. You can’t have it both ways. There are too many options for someone to sit in the pews and give tens of thousands of dollars to hear such garbage proclaimed in the name of God.

Jack, I did not put a comma where I should have. I was NOT supporting the slavery vs holocaust version. I was actually backing your comments on the Holocaust. Yes Cathy, Staistically more Whites are on welfare because there are more Whites in America than there are Blacks. SO that means that there are in fact more poor Whites that are in MAerica than there are poor Blacks, yet all I hear from are the “poor blacks” which proves my point about complaining. Poor White communities were hit just as hard in from Katrina in Alabama and Mississippi. But EVERYBODY had to focus on the “poor blacks” and how badly they were treated when in fact, everybody was hit hard.

Posted by: Jack | April 27, 2008, 4:02 pm 4:02 pm

OK, let me get this straight; at FIRST, when confronted, Senator Barack Obama told the American people the he was not aware of and not in church during his pastor’s “controversial” comments. NOW, when pressed and realizing that the American public requires a more honest and complete answer, he tells us that YES he WAS in the church, YES he DID hear the inflammatory sermons. Yet, he STILL defends his pastor on the grounds that he did other good deeds. Well, my Catholic priest NEVER preached hatred AND my church helps the community with food and spiritual support. Barack, I am here to tell you that it IS possible to do both well. The simple fact that you placed your stamp of approval on your pastor by not leaving his flock, even AFTER hearing his hatefilled anti-American, anti-White rehtoric is why so many American voters will never vote you into office. And deservedly so.

Jack you make some good points to be honest. Regardless of history, MANY people in this country have been treated poorly. If history serves me correctly, the Irish immigrants were not much more than underpaid slaves when they came to this country. “Elitism” has always existed at some level, even from the first times of immigrants in this country. What I am extremely tired of is the CONSTANT cry of unfair about things in the past. If the person is black, It MUST be racism. That is not a fair indictment today.

I watched Rev Wright’s interview and was surprised to find him a very intelligent person. However, our conflicts with the Native Americans, the Japanese, Saddam, etc.were and are very complicated issues. They cannot be looked at in black and white terms, good and evil, as he does. Slavery and segregation, however, can. I think he is a very bitter man over the segregation issue and radiates this hatred on to all the government’s actions. The government actually is the people. When he damns America, he damns you and me. I also think he has perhaps been too influenced by Farrakan.
I also watched Obama’s Sunday morning interview and had to laugh when he was asked about the 10% of whites who voted in Pennsylvania who said race mattered. No one asked if the 90% of blacks who voted for Obama thought race mattered!

Posted by: pinion65 | April 27, 2008, 4:32 pm 4:32 pm

They are complicated but still happen. whites gave indians small pox intentionally . We bombed japan when we knew they were going to surrender we killed more innocent people than the japanese did in their attacks on pearl harbor. We put sadaam in power gave him weapons training and money. The government has always lied to america. the cia used americans white and black in their tests of drugs like lsd and heroin. the govt gave black men syphillis and failed to cure them. so yes america has done horrendous things to its people. and what do you know about farrakahn prior to this event. have you ever looked up the work hes done for blacks? doubt it.

Posted by: Allamr18 | April 27, 2008, 4:38 pm 4:38 pm

Obama continued, “He has certainly preached in the past, when I was there, about the history of race in this country in very blunt terms, talking about slavery and talking about Jim Crow. The problem -– and I’ve pointed this out in my speech in Philadelphia -– was, where often times he would error, I think, is in only cataloging the bad of America and not doing enough to lift up the good. And that’s probably where he and I have the biggest difference.”
Obama’s own words show that he did not affect a change in Rev. Wright’s discourse.

Posted by: elme52 | April 27, 2008, 4:53 pm 4:53 pm

Let’s say a White, Southern, Evangelical preacher was caught on video screaming to his congregation about how the Black man is inferior, and how White people need to be afraid of Black people, and he quoted scripture to justify his remarks.
Then, a few months later, this same preacher was interviewed on FoxNews by Sean Hannity, and Hannity threw him softball questions. And in a calm, whispering tone, the preacher talked about how he is being misunderstood, and his words were taken out of context, and he really loves Black people, etc, etc.
How many liberals would buy it? How many Obama supporters would buy it? Need I say more.

Posted by: The Fop | April 27, 2008, 4:54 pm 4:54 pm

Lol i like how your answer to a problem is to leave the problem. theres a problem with america instead of addressing it and how to fix it lets just leave. its what they said to the people of katrina, the people in okl after the tornadoes, and its what your saying to obama. its so bad you shouldve left. because leaving obviously fixes a problem. bush left and cheney left the draft but they became the pres and vice pres and put our country in a position of dispair. i dont want to be anywhere else but i also want to keep america from making the same mistake

Posted by: Allamr18 | April 27, 2008, 4:58 pm 4:58 pm

I grew up in an extended family of white fundamentalists. I know what it is like to hear hellfire and damnation sermons from the pulpit. It is not possible to attend typical fundamentalist Christian services, especially Southern Baptist and similar southern-based denominations, without hearing hateful messages that are anathema to any liberal Democrat. Denunciations of gays and the “gay lifestyle” are common, along with citations of passages in the Bible that seem to advocate death for gays (interestingly these same preachers rarely mention other passages about stoning adulterers). The position of the Southern Baptist Convention on women’s rights, when stripped of its rhetorical cover, amounts to this: a wife is to her husband as the husband is to God. Some fundamentalists preachers carry their opposition to abortion to the point of explicitly equating doctors who perform this legal procedure (which of course is not mentioned at all in the Bible) to murderers, and have tacitly or overtly condoned violence against abortion clinics and all those associated with them.
And so on.
And yet many liberal Democrats chose to sit in those fundamentalist pews every week and listen to those sometimes hateful sermons. They do so for many reasons. Because these churches do much good within their communities, for example. Because liberals choose to hear the sermons of Christian love and peace and charity and let the hate go, as an un-Christian relic that hopefully their churches will one day outgrow. Because with the good works and the positive parts of the Christian fundamentalist message, the churches provide a meeting place and rallying point to organize for positive change. Because in communities that are often poor, oppressed, and hopeless they provide hope and inspiration for both the individual worshipper and the community.
People do not abandon the fixed points that define their faith, their community and their family, even when there are things not to love, as long as the good of solidarity outweighs disagreements.
Obama, unlike many, did not have Christianity handed to him by his family and upbringing. He had to find it, and Rev. Wright was one of those instrumental in his becoming a Christian. If you believe in the transcendent value of salvation through Christ, would you ever abandon those who brought you to that priceless gift? I think the answer is obvious to anyone who actually takes Christianity, rather than scoring political points, seriously.

The Flop, Rev wright was not saying anything about inferiority or superiority. he was saying embrace your culture and your people. you are black be proud of that. he didnt say fear white people, he said fear government because they fail there people. all powerful governments fail their people at some point. you cant name one that hasnt. and obama said he didnt agree with his remarks. i disagree with my friends and church members but i stick by their side and will fight for them and against them if necessary.

You all want everyone to believe that Obama is a bad person because of his association with those who you claim are recist and unchristian.
I like to ask if Obama has a any friend who qualifies as patriotic American.
Your argument cuts into the very quality you need to select the next president, which is the ability to unite for solution to a common problem.
If you start now to reject everyone you perceive as a bad person, based at best on rumours, how can you bank on having that person at the table for solution to our problem? Think about it?

Let Obama drive through the wrong city at any given time and get pulled over by police, then you’re understand why Obama is INDEED a BLACK MAN. Regardless of his having a white mother. to those who try posting Clinton’s long list of legislative accomplishments…
Obama has a very long list and for the years they have served his crushes hers…
the fact is Hillary’s accomplishments are not of huge substance… name large important Bills or movement that she has headed (not just put her name on ) aand gotten all the way through to approval…
for 6 years of fighting and being the front runner for the past 4 years for the Presidential nomination she’s gotten comapratively nothing done.
Nothing she has done was a challenge that she succeeded at…and any committee she sat on was tactical for her own career advancement.
Show me something substantive…anyone can try and put up long lists of names being on Bills (Obama has more than she does in his overall legislative career by 4 to 1 when yuo don’t separate out state and national)
so I would love for someone again to tell me her accompishments not just cut and paste.

Listening to Wright at this moment giving a speech for the NAACP, is exactly as he says, (Divisive)many people I am sure will understand much of what he speaks, because they were not versed in this cultural, anthropological view. What he seems to be doing is making excuses for the failures of many minorities, especially because we have not learned in the same way as the Anglo American’s in this country. HE has continued to expand this divide and express how different we are. He continues to make the racial divide by continuing to speak and express how different people are. He should be more positive instead of making sarcastic remarks to express his views. OH, my goodness he has shown the world he is a very educated person. But, Wright seems to scolding and and really seems to be embarrassing himself. He is all over the place with his point of view. This is not helping B.O.bama, He continues to express his hatered towards (White America) He express Anger, frustration) and surely does not espouse LOVE< as a pastor should. Poor OBAMA, he will not be able to live these views down, this election is going to be racial and Wright continues to live in the 60's he is giving us all a tongue lashing.

I just finished listening to Wright’s speech from Detroit. While the speech was passionate and effectie, I can’t help but to think that it was orchestrated. Would this message have been different if Wright knew he wasn’t being broadcast on natioal tv. Can we ever put any confidence in his excuses and rhetoric? The speech should have ended with Obama saying “I’m Barack Obama and I approve this message.”

Obama does NOT have a chance against McCain. I will vote for Hillary before I would EVER vote for Obama. And yes, we should threaten to “obliterate” Iran if they attack Israel. Iran is who we should have gone after in the first place, NOT Iraq.

Thought Obama did not HEAR anything from Rev racist Wright? as Wright said this weekend on TV(PBS)…Obama speaks and responds as a politician and I respond as a pastor”
HMMM guess Obama IS a Washington politician after all!

There is nothing more to talk about. Obama has been going to a church for 20 years where the leader is a Black Racist. People are ignorant if they think that this was the first and only time that Obama has heard such negativity and hate from the man who married him and his wife and baptized his children. Wright is nothing more than a Black Klansman.

Rev. Wright said today that blacks use the right side of the brain, unlike white people that use the left side of brain to think with. No wonder Africa is a mess. That means that Obama uses his right side of the brain and we are going to have a mess in our hands if he wins the presidency.

You don’t distinguish between legilative accomplishments at the state level and legistlative accomplishemnts at the national level?
I do.
Just as I think leg. accomp at the state level are more impressive than leg. accomplishments on the school board or those of a class high school president, or in the PTA.
Different levels of gov’t raise new hurdles to getting things done. The higher the level the more difficult. Seems pretty straightforward to me.
H. Clinton’s career is much more impressive than B. Obama’s.

How can Obama seek the highest office in a land that is cursed his friend and spiritual advisor? More important how can anyone vote for him? My grandfather told me long ago that a man is known by the company he keeps. I cursed Rudy Giuliani for standing by his friend and priest who is a known child molester. Only scum would tolerate that kind of scum. While I don’t consider Wright’s actions to be quite that bad, they are bad enough. Obama knew what that his friend hates America and that he is a racist. How can he tolerate that? Wright influenced the Obamas enough that Ms Obama stated that she had never been proud of the United States. Senator Obama’s actions have also brought his patriotism into question. Some of you seem content to vote for him anyway. I find that to be very disturbing.

@dl:
another blogger (Cathy) suggested some search words and I found the full sermons. I replied to her above, but I guesse you missed my reply:
There I said: “I’ve viewed the sermons in their entirety. You are right, in context, Rev. Wright was saying the complete opposite of what we are learning from the MSM.”
She was helpful, provided me the information I requested, and I actually changed my mind based on that info! Consider that – someone with an open mind.
Your comments, however, confirm that at least some of Obama’s supporters are more intent on scoring cheap points, than engaging in honest debate.
As you wrote:
“but that probably doesn’t suit anyone who wants their queen to be elected”.
H. Clinton is not my Queen. And B. Obama is not my Prince.
Is he yours?
For all your vaunted education and intelligence, Obama’s more vociferous partisans (if you are at all represetative), are an awful presumptious and close-minded bunch.
Cathy excepted ;-)

@all the commentators who insist that race is a biological category.
It isn’t
Race is socially constructed. Different societies assign different meanings to certain external features (skin color, hair color, nose size) and DECIDE that based on these features someone belongs to one or another socially constructed group.
We could just as easily decide to create a “RACE” based the category of “shortness”, or the category of “left-handedness”. We just haven’t.
As to Ashkenazi Jews: geneticists have identified genetic variations with high frequencies among Ashkenazi Jews. This is true for patrilineal markers (Y-chromosome haplotypes) as well as for matrilineal markers (mitochondrial haplotypes).
But this same genetic variation is not uncommon among the JAPANESE. Does that mean the Japanese belong to the Jewish “Race”?
More to the point, what about Jews who do not have this genetic variation(Sephardim, Ethiopian, or Ashkenazim without the variation). Are they now excluded from the Jewish “Race”?

Message of this election:Church is THE State. And it better be the correct church.
But thank heaven for Gwen Ifill, who finally just got it out there. Where is the discussion of Wright on Moyers? Are so many in the press scared, or are they irrelevant?
(MTP, NBC, April 27, 2008) MR. RUSSERT: “Gwen Ifill, a pastor’s daughter that covers politics.
MS. IFILL: That pastor’s daughter thing is going to haunt me forever. You know what? I listened to that and I thought, “Exactly.” Since when is Barack Obama not a politician? This idea that he is–sure, he has, he has created himself as this “I’m above it all, I’m going to change Washington” kind of guy, but I never was confused about whether he was a politician. I don’t think most voters were confused about whether he’s a politician. And what Jeremiah Wright is trying to do now is trying to make the distinction between what they do. If you watched the whole half-hour with Moyers, it was actually very fascinating. Jeremiah Wright, you know, set out to prove that he was not a crazy man, and he did a good job. He was quoting Latin, he was doing what he does–what he actually does as opposed to what we’ve seen. So that’s fine. The failure, however, still becomes, you know, that the Obama people are not happy to see Jeremiah Wright back out there because it gives us a chance to run all the old clips again, at the very least.
It also obscures a, a more fundamental problem which is coming up in this campaign, we are all looking for ways, in our way, to talk about race in the campaign. But what the, the numbers have shown us, the exit polls have shown us in the last week is that what we don’t want to talk about is racism, which is, I think, a, a, a real issue. The people who said they–that race mattered to them, a lot of them voted for Hillary Clinton. I’m not calling the voters racists, but I think, at some point, we have to get back to a word that we’re very scared of using in our society, which is the reason why people vote against someone because of their race is not a positive reason, it’s a negative, and racism is a negative quality. We have to find some way to embrace talking about that in our coverage, and we’re kind of nervous about that.”
Andrea Mitchell, also on the panel, was shown for a second onscreen looking rattled. She later added…”let me just say something from being on the ground in Pennsylvania and in Ohio–I think racism is a real factor here. I don’t think it’s being polled correctly because I don’t think it can be polled correctly. I think it is what you see in some of his failure to connect with a particular sector of the electorate. And I’m not sure how you get your arms around it, but I think it is a real issue that there is a resistance to him on some level in the electorate, and you hear these things from voters when you talk to them. “Oh, I heard that he’s not really a Christian.” “Oh, well, he didn’t, you know, put his hand over his heart.” All this willingness to believe totally erroneous things about Barack Obama, which begins to congeal, and I think it’s a problem.”

Posted by: kravitz | April 28, 2008, 12:31 am 12:31 am

Now, has John McCain been asked to leave his wife because her father has a connection to the murder of a journalist? Haven’t heard a peep on that one.

Posted by: kravitz | April 28, 2008, 12:33 am 12:33 am

Kravitz — Who would ask anyone to leave his wife for any reason?
Who would criticize McCain or his wife for something her father may or may not have done? We would have to put Ted Kennedy in jail for his father’s support of Adolf Hitler if that were the case.
If a person is guilty because of a “connection” to a murder, the Clintons will be in prison until the year 2130.
A few “Journalists” have made me that mad a time or two.

Posted by: Royce | April 28, 2008, 1:06 am 1:06 am

Re: Gwen Ifil’s comments on race.
She said (quoting the post from Kravitz): we are…looking for ways…to talk about race in the campaign. But what the…the exit polls have shown us in the last week is that what we don’t want to talk about is racism, which is, I think, a real issue. The people who said…that race mattered to them, a lot of them voted for Hillary Clinton. I’m not calling the voters racists, but I think, at some point, we have to get back to a word that we’re very scared of using in our society, which is the reason why people vote against someone because of their race is not a positive reason, it’s a negative, and racism is a negative quality.
Here’s my question:
Why is it “Racism” to vote against someone because of their race, but it is not “Racism” to vote FOR someone because of their race.
Clearly, the polls also show that many people, particulary many in the African-American community are voting FOR Obama precisely because he is black.
I’m a little simple-minded, but that looks like racism to me.

Posted by: Machiavelli | April 28, 2008, 1:52 am 1:52 am

Incidentally, I also think that anyone voting AGAINST Obama because he is black or for Clinton because she is white is also a racist.
I just don’t see a difference between Obama’s supporters and Clinton’s who vote for one or another, or against one or another candidate based on race.

In Bill Moyer’s interview with Wright this past Friday, Wright more than distinguished himself as a man of courage and purpose. A beautiful full dimensional person. Not the caricature that is being portrayed.
Too bad the campaign commentary of the media have keep up only one view of Wright that now seems to be the ‘accepted truth’.
I was very disappointed in Stephanopolis’ discussion of Wright this Sunday.

I am wondering a little bit about Reverend Wright’s right brain theory, and whether it applies equally to right handed people and to left handed people, and what might happen when a left brained person of one race marries a right brained person of another race, and whether their children will be partially right brained and partially left brained, or whether the right brain is the dominant brain that will fill the whole cranial cavity, no matter how many left brained ancestors might be there trying to elbow their way inside.

The problem is that Obama seeks spiritual advice from an ignorant man who is not aligned with American values. There is a difference between JFK’s Boston accent and an African-American boy who does not speak proper English – JFK was highly educated and came from a life of privilege. Rev Wright is the nail in Obama’s coffin. I am no longer considering voting for Obama.

Posted by: Nicole | April 28, 2008, 7:27 am 7:27 am

This race should not be about race! Why all of a sudden now that Obama is losing is it all about the color of someone’s skin. It is not okay for Rev. Wright to say “Hillary ain’t never been called a N*ger”. It is not okay for Obama to call someone a “Typical white person”. This message is appalling. IT IS NOT OKAY TO BE RACIST NO MATTER WHAT COLOR YOU ARE!

Posted by: Joe | April 28, 2008, 7:29 am 7:29 am

First Obama said he didn’t hear the sermons and wasn’t aware they even took place, now he says he sat in church and heard some of them. The word liar come to mind.
I and millions of Americans would have gotten up and left the church sermon and would have probably not come back…because we would be offended, but Obama sat there and did nothing…that is what people are upset about.

Posted by: vicki | April 28, 2008, 8:28 am 8:28 am

I had a very negative expectation about what Reverand Wright was all about. I watched his speach at the NAACP. He is brilliant!
That doesn’t change my view about Barack Obama. I work in the Sales & Marketing Industry and can see through everything he says or does. It is the frustration of people that understand the power of “branding” (Nike: “Just Do It”)and the manipulation of sales that just want to shake the Obama Supporters and wake them up.

Posted by: Juli An | April 28, 2008, 8:30 am 8:30 am

I have generally been an Obama supporter. I think that the country suffers from Clinton fatigue and we need someone to bring hope to the American people and get other countries to trust us again. However, I think that if Wright continues, he will cost Obama the presidency. It would have been better if Wright had stayed out of the picture. Obama wants to appeal the the general public. With Wright seeking publicity to make the Black church no “longer invicible”, he will bring Obama down. It has not been a race issue, but when you start insisting that the Black church must be made visible at a time when a Black man is seeking the presidency of America, which is a mix of all religions and cultures, there are going to be problems.

Just thinking, if the Wrights use the left brain,, right brain theory of learning, I wonder what side of the brain he, his wife Obama and his wife used to succeed while going to school. Did he make a comment on how they learned? I see that they succeeded extreemly well in the USA. school system, does he expect less from the majority of black children in this country. Does he not expect, that many African Americans will not be able to succeed in this society? Obama is going to have a mountain of questions regarding his mentors world views.

As for the Reverend Wright, as a 55 year old white woman, I agree with just about everything he said in his sermons. It’s refresing to hear someone speak the truth.

Obama is responsible for the people he chooses to associate with and support financially.
For 20+ years, Obama and his family have sat clapping in the pews of this vile, racist, Anti-American clown’s church.
Anyone who was a “uniter,” as Obama claims he is, would have walked out of that church decades ago.
Anyone who wasn’t racist, as Obama claims he isn’t, would have walked out of that church decades ago.
Anyone with good judgment, as Obama claims he has, would have walked out of that church decades ago.
Anyone who loved America, as Obama purports, would have walked out of that church decades ago.
Anyone with good moral character, as Obama claims he has, would have walked out of that church decades ago.
OF COURSE Obama knew about the hate monger Wright. He has had a close relationship with the guy for nearly 25 years. Obama enjoyed Wright’s rhetoric and agreed with him — otherwise he would have left the church decades ago.
Obama is con man.

I do not believe many of you are being honest. You say that you would bolt out of the door of a church the first time your pastor said something controversial, but that’s not true. Many beliefs that Christians have are considered controversial. If your pastor always plays it safe and never thinks out of the box, then you are lucky to have him. Some of us actually want a pastor who is passionate and says what he believes, even if we do not agree with everything he says. Many of you haven’t even heard the sermons. You’re basing your judgements on a few sound bites. A few sound bites taken out of context could make just about anyone look bad. I will give him credit for one thing. At least he’s bold enough to say what he thinks as opposed to those of you who pretend that you would bolt out of the door if your pastor said something racist, even though deep down you know you have heard racist comments from people and not said a word. You are being self-righteous to say you would have left when you have no way of knowing if you actually would have. For Obama to bolt out of a church just because of a few sound bites and ignore all of the good that was taking place is ridiculous. Many of you are so happy that you found something on Obama’s pastor, you could care less about him and his policies. You need an excuse to vote against him and now you have one. Guilt by association to his pastor. Good for John McCain and Hillary Clinton that they don’t have to answer for any of their associations. Nope, only Obama is fortunate enough to have to pass that threshold. I wonder why?

Posted by: kat1park | April 28, 2008, 2:27 pm 2:27 pm

@kat1park:
Why does it seem Obama is being held to a higher standard? Why Obama’s association with Rev. Wright relevant, but Clinton’s or McCain’s unsavory associations get less attention?
The answer is simple:
Both H. Clinton and McCain have been in the public eye for more than 30 years. Like them or hate them, we know who they are.
Few people outside of Chicago politics had even heard of Obama before he gave his keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004.
Obama is a newcomer. Candidate “X”.
He may be “the One” that his more avid fans believe him to be. He still is the new kid on the block.
Those of us who aren’t (yet) convinced, grasp at any new info (both good and bad) that might give us a fuller picture of the man.
Obama himself has repeatedly advertised his faith, and how important his faith has been to his political career.
Seems to me, if Obama’s church is so important to him, we voters have a right to consider the contents of that faith (as preached by his pastor).
That’s it.

Posted by: JWF | April 28, 2008, 2:44 pm 2:44 pm

Obama will say just about anything to make Rev. Wright seem okay and to minimize the association. But do not be fooled nor let this issue die – there is nothing more fundamental to America than having a President who surrounds himself and associates with only people who want God to Bless America, who are proud of our country, even with all its faults, who would never stand for the kind of accusations made by Wright. If you elect Obama count on Wright be right there leading prayer in the White House.

Posted by: Nancy | April 28, 2008, 3:25 pm 3:25 pm

Those of you are are still whining about the war. What did you want us to do when we got attacked? Stand there and cry? We are the United States of America and we have been fighting for our freedoms and dying for them for centuries. Bunch of babies! My father and brothers all fought and would again. And as far as Obama is concerned; if you think that you can reason with terrorists; go over there and get your head cut off; that’s how much he is in denial about what is happening in our world today. And his pastor is keeping himself in the news; not the media. He has been doing interviews all over the place. You democrats will blame everybody but yourselves for your socialistic views and the division in your party right now. Oh, that’s not your fault either I suppose.

African American leaders like Reverend Wright are absolutely terrified of Barack Obama becoming the next President. Why?! Because if Obama unifies the Nation, heals racial division, and reduces racial discrimination in both directions, racists like Reverend Wright will be out of a job. For too long have bigots like him been feeding off the black community. It is time for the black community to rise up against these leeches and say in a loud voice “No longer are we going to perceive ourselves as the disadvantaged. We are part of America and we can control our own destiny. We are not diminished and we will say to the World – yes we can!”
