Obama Forgets Writing on Gun Questionnaire

ABC News’ Teddy Davis and Talal Al-Khatib Report: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., maintained at Wednesday’s ABC News debate in Philadelphia that his handwriting does not appear on a 1996 questionnaire stating support for a ban on the manufacture, sale, and possession of handguns. The Democratic presidential frontrunner made this claim even though a copy of the original document suggests otherwise.

"No, my writing wasn’t on that particular questionnaire, Charlie. As I said, I have never favored an all-out ban on handguns," said Obama.

The Illinois Democrat made his remarks after ABC News’ Charlie Gibson told Obama: "In 1996, your campaign issued a questionnaire, and your writing was on the questionnaire that said you favored a ban on handguns."

The questionnaire, which was filled out for an organization called "Independent Voters of Illinois – Independent Precinct Organizations," appears to have Obama’s handwriting on the first page plus a typewritten answer to the gun question on the last page.

Read the questionnaire with the handwriting here.

Read an accompanying story from Politico here.

The questionnaire asked: "Do you support state legislation to: ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns?"

Obama’s campaign answered: "Yes."

Obama’s response to an earlier 1996 questionnaire from the same group has the same statement of support for a sweeping ban on handguns.

Read the earlier questionnaire here.

When asked about the gun questionnaire with the handwriting on it, Obama adviser Robert Gibbs did not dispute that the writing was Obama’s.

Rather than defend Obama’s claim that his handwriting was not on the questionnaire, Gibbs argued that voters should instead focus on the Illinois Democrat’s claim that he does not — and has never — supported a handgun ban.

Asked why his 1996 campaign manager would think that he supported a handgun ban if that was never his position, Gibbs said, "Why she filled out the questionnaire the way she did I have no idea because it didn’t reflect his views."

The Clinton campaign swiftly rebuked Obama’s unsupported claim that his handwriting was not on the questionnaire.

"He did not give a defensible answer," said Clinton adviser Howard Wolfson on Wednesday.

"Perhaps he could explain how his handwriting could appear on it without actually seeing it?" Wolfson added during a Thursday conference call with reporters.

Simple. When cornered, Senator Barack Obama will LIE. Sadly, Barack, just like a “typical Washington politician”. He even LOOKED nervous like he was lying when he said it. He also tried to claim that he “disowned” his former Pastor – until George Stephanopolus called him immediately on it. Barack is learning the hard way that you cant run a campaign on speeches and constantly yelling “Change” and “Hope”! Hillary looked and sounded “Presidential” Barack looked scared and lost.

this is not a small issue, but merely yet another example of how Obama continues to LIE and betray the American public, and his supporters absoulutely refuse to believe it. That is what will drive this country to ruins…..a group of hypnotized voters voting for a dangerous liar like Obama into the white house. God help us, what is wrong with you people?

So what…Hillary did not wear her flag pin tonight and McCain did not wear his flag pin on college hardball with Chris Matthews Tuesday night. Why don’t you write about this? If you check the internet for a picture of that night you will see it. I am too through with ABC. This was a set up.

This is the first time in a debate (other than being questioned on Louis F) that Bo hasnt been coddled by the hosts
Up until this debate he was treated with kid gloves and was allowed to feed off Hillarys answers
Unless I missed something he was the one who started attacking her when asked about his latest boneheaded comments
So he didnt jump on the Bosnia thing -He certainly had no problem in his comedy shtick comparing her to Annie Oakley now did he
He was put on the spot tonite and couldnt take it
Easy answer as to why he has refused the North Carolina debate
He doesnt do well with out a teleprompter
If he never has to ever answer another question he will do just fine

Another attempted “hit job” by ABC and politico on Obama! The best part is people aren’t as stupid as you think they are.

I just have one thing to say-
YES, YES, YES !!
Excellent performance by both candidates in the debate tonight, despite the expected antagonistic questioning towards Senator Obama. At least no one can ever complain anymore about moderators being too tough on Clinton. All part of the great vetting of Obama that will help him in the national election tis fall. If he can stand up to the brutal Clinton attack machine, it will be easy to stand up to McCain, who is clumsier and a far weaker opponent than HIllary. We owe her a debt of gratitude for making Obama a stronger and more formidable candidate for the NE this fall.
Obama, 08

Did anyone besides me notice that when the moderators asked Omaba about his remarks in San Francisco they conveniently left out his inclusion of racism and illegal immigration? They only mentioned religion and guns?! Will anyone ever ask either of these democrat candidates about their positions on illegal immigration during a debate???

I guess Obama is having a Bosnia moment.
He ‘forgot’ that he was for a total ban on handguns.
Lol.
Lets face it folks. This whole thing has gotten ridiculous.
Its totally overplayed. They have nothing left to do but mock each other. The media has nothing left to do but find dirt on them both.
In 2012, they should move to a 50 state primary on the same day. This process has dragged out WAY too long.
Just have the primaries on the same day for christs sakes .

The press has all the right in the world to question Obama about the questionnair, BitterGate and now that Obama worked for terrorist William Ayers. He said he was 8 when Ayers bombed New York. Nice try Obama. You were 30something when you worked for him at the Woods Project. You as an adult made the decision to work for a terrorist. This is a legitimate issue, the judgment and associations of the possible nominee. Its goes straight to the reason why democrats have lost the last two elections. It is fair to argue Obama’s condescension to the small town folk because it goes directly to issues like religion, xenophobia, gun ownership and culture. And his associations with Farrahkan, Wright, Ayers and Refko should be fully vetted.

I was surprised how poorly Barack did in the ABC debate. His poorest responses were the “bitter” remarks he made about us. He also changed the subject every time his relationships to the terrorist and the racist hater came up. I only wish we had known these things about him sooner.

In a time when maybe this is last debate. A very important evening. ABC has commercials . In fact as it began they broke away after 1 minute. The first 45 minutes had no issues but attacks by Clinton and ABC on Obama. I think I have watched all debates this year both Republican & Democrat and Im positive now that ABC did the worse job. Charlie Gibson arguing his point of view as if he was running in primary. Shame on ABC , pitiful dispaly on yall’s behalf.

Posted by: Cutter Brandenburg | April 17, 2008, 1:05 am 1:05 am

It seem like Obama with the hand-writing issue is like Obama with the other controversial issues that have dogged his campaign – first deny it ever happened, then when the evidence is overwhelmingly there – well “yes” it did happen but it’s not the way it looks.
Interesting how the Obama supporters don’t seem to be on “message” when Senator Obama is asked some tough questions. They resort to name-calling and personal insults as if that is going to convince anyone other than themselves that they are right. ( A suggestion – maybe a course on how to “win friends and influence enemies” might be helpful.)

Posted by: Cathy | April 17, 2008, 1:09 am 1:09 am

I think what is rather amusing is that the liberal media, including ABC, are beating up on the Democratic nominee, Senator Obama, at a time when they normally would be building and lifting their candidate in written and televised media for the upcoming national election against the evil republicans. After this media generated blood letting nomination process is over, the liberal media will suddenly do an about face, change their tune, say and write wonderful things about him, and proceed to trash the McCains every which way they can! It’s so predictable. The same folks who are saying he sucks, will kiss up. What does this say about our party and the liberal media! LOL!

Posted by: rco | April 17, 2008, 1:12 am 1:12 am

How is this LIE any different from the Bosnia lie by Hillary.
The media made a huge deal about Bosnia, but I am sure that Obama will get a free pass on this.
A lie is a lie, and it doesn’t matter who says it. It should be treated equally.

Clinton didn’t get asked soft questions and Obama didn’t get asked hard questions. Clinton just way out performed Obama and answered many of the questions flawlessly whereas Obama managed to stumble and give Americans a glimpse of how unprepared he is to run our nation.

As an Obama supporter I am glad they did this. Even though they looked completly unproffesional they vetted Barack Obama. The fact that Clinton supporters actually think that his dirt is worse than what they got on Hillary is blind. Even on the terrorist allegation her husband commuted their sentence!

Cathy no one is suggesting that Obama should not have been asked tough questions. I think he did pretty good with asked questions on policies. Do you have on your flag pinned on right now? No you don’t, you HATE this country. You better go put on your flag pin to prove your love for it. Does that make sense to you? Love for the country is now define by wearing a flag pin, if there was a jail sentence with this 90% the country would be locked up. This was a stupid question. Also why is Obama to blame for something Ayers did 40 years ago? Are you to blame for everybody that you associate with that has ever commited a crime? There is a such thing as rehabitation and obviously this man is now teaching at a University so they must have forgiven him. All of America has already heard about Rev. Wright, I guess some people are not going to stop until you make Obama him. The fair question was the one on his bitter remarks. That question he should have had to explain himself and his position.

Funny that the Obama people can jam up the debate blog. There are only 10 posts on “Obama’s Memory Lapse” under Investigative. Under the circumstances would it have been out of line to ask him if the Iraqi billionaire Auchi and his partner Syrian Tony Rezko had anything to do with Obama’s original stance on the war? I mean since he’s made his opposition of it such a huge issue against everybody else?

ABC was the first in the MSM to open up Pandora’s Box by finally asking some tough questions of Senator Obama. And what we got with Obama was some insight to how he is not fit to be leader of the free world.
“Pandora had been given a jar and instructed by Zeus to keep it closed, but she had also been given the gift of curiosity, and ultimately opened it. When she opened it, all of the evils of mankind escaped from the jar, although Pandora was quick enough to close it again and keep one value inside, Hope.”

I am laughing because the Democrats dismissed their best candidates long ago. To me, neither the Clinton people or the Obama people are all right. Clinton know her stuff and that appeals to me, but Ronald Reagan did not know crap and he got Democrats and working people to vote for him against their own interest. He and both Bushes have weakened our great country .Reagan started us on this path but he did not know jack crap but he won because of something intangible.

Posted by: LBear | April 17, 2008, 2:21 am 2:21 am

Um, last I checked, the Electoral College is how the president is decided. And the candidates for the presidency are decided in the republican and democratic primaries. And the superdelegates play an important role in deciding who the democratic nominee will be. The goal is to win the White House (decided by the EC) and when the superdelegates assess who can best do that, it will be Hillary Clinton.
It’s really not rocket science. If your position is that the democractic primary has nothing to do with the presidential election, then Obama deserves smart people like you.

Sounds like Obama wants it both ways for whom ever would endorse him. BY the way, does anyone remember that Obama’s legislative materials from Illinois weren’t kept because Obama didn’t have “the resources to archive them”. Yeah, maybe there are other memos that would be revealed!

Posted by: Darla | April 17, 2008, 2:34 am 2:34 am

I too would think Obama would do better as a lawyer; however, you do not need to be ready to be great trial lawyer to pass the bar. Trial are the lawyers that are best on their feet and even they like to be super prepared. I know lawyers who suck in court but are good at what they do because they rarely have to do court agruments. So the affirmative action argument is sickening. It presumes all white men are inherently qualified and other minorites are not. Yea right ! The same BS has been around for more than 30 years.

Posted by: LBear | April 17, 2008, 2:34 am 2:34 am

Well of course he was lying…
Obama does not even remember 2004 or 2005. He conveniantly forgot all the details of his home purchase with Rezco…He forgot he and his wife attended a gathering with Rezco and the shady Iraqi corruption king…another associate that Obama will pretend he disowned after he finally admits he knew him….THE REZCO CASE IS PROCEEDING AND THE TESTIMONY IS STARTING TO POINT TO OBAMA AS WELL AS HIS POLITICAL FIXER AND BENEFACTOR…
OF course he’s lying about Wright…first he didn’t hear him…then he wasn’t sure which comments…then he distanced himself when he announced his presidential run….then he put Wright on his campaign…he referred to Wright as his “spiritual mentor” until the you tubes came out now he’s saying that is just a “former minister”
His relationship with Rezco is a similar story. And the media is not supposed to ask questions?
Obama is not the politics of hope…Obama is the politics of Axelrod….A barrage of attacks from a campaign that runs negative ads then plays the victim when Clinton runs negative ads.
The hypocrisy of a candidate that pretends he is not attacking is not attractive to anyone that cares to look at it rationally.
Let MI and FL vote and the election can be settled. Attorneys got Bush the White House in 2000….and they may get Obama the nomination but they will not get him the presidency in 2008.
Clinton or McCain…2008

The next pres. will get 2 – 3 Supreme Court appointments and numerous federal court appoinments. Do you want more Federalist Fascists on the court ?
How many of you would support McCain if we had a draft and you or your family memembers were of draft age ? If you are not ready to back McCain up with your own service, then how can you in good conscience vote for him ?
By the way, I know people that have made comments critical of the US, but most have served, some killed for this country in the services, and most believe in the draft, but I guess they are unpatriotic too. Hello all you summer soldiers.

I just read the questionnaire again and Obama’s handwriting on a page before the real “question” part of the questionnaire doen’t mean much to me. Especially since we don’t know when he wrote the notes.
I also believe Obama’s position on this and many other issues is nuanced and not amenable to the usual 15 second political sound bite type of posturing.
I believe Obama when he says he has never favored an all out ban on handguns and his answer on the 1996 questionnaire is completely consistent with this claim.
Again I’m amazed at how much some folks don’t want Obama elected.
These people are really afraid he will win if he is the nominee. And they should be because he will definitely beat McCain.

Gee I wonder why some people feel ill-will and down trodden about Obama.
Gee…could it be because of the way Obama and his supporters have acted. That is; if it was Hillary or McCain that said those comments in San Francisco that Obama and his supporters would be all over it…seriously you and the rest would not have let it go.
Or could it be because the longer this goes on the more we see the real Obama.
What’s the matter he can’t handle it, oh poor baby. Why don’t you bring him some chicken soup and a blankey.
Hillary wasn’t the first one to come out with the negative campaign tactics. That started after NH when Obama didn’t get the primary, and when push comes to shove, well you know how that goes. Obama is suppose to be a uniter, ha…that’s a laugh. Especially when he comes out with stupid comments like he did.

Of course it’s a lie, like all the others he has told and has been protected by the media, the DNC, and his campaign zealots. It’s almost like how JFK was protected during his presidency (Marilyn Monroe, health/medical issues, etc.)
You wonder with all of his different answers on NAFTA (exposed before OH primary), Wright (he didn’t hear the remarks, then he did), Iraq Policy (Susan Powers saying he’s stumping on one thing but will do something else in office), Rezcko (I don’t know him very well – I did 5 hrs of work for him to yes, I took $250K from him for my campaign), Ayers (friendly, but now he’s a guy in my neighborhood), Iraqi billionaire party (I don’t recall being there, says Obama – but in court, a defendent says he WAS there)…
What exactly will he do if he becomes President? The opposite of what he has been saying? Luckily, we will never find out.

Thanks, George and Charlie for asking the questions early in the debate. It’s okay in the Obama camp for Clinton to take all the tough questions but when Obama’s turn came to reconcile many inconsistencies, he wilted. We keep hearing how he wants to stay above “all that” but he started his speech in my city with a knock about Clinton. The very fact that Clinton has the support she does in most large states should be of concern to people (media included) that Clinton is a viable candidate and should not exit. By now, most voters would have jumped ship (like some frightened super delagates), but people who are voting for President and not American Idol are voting for Clinton

Obama doesn’t forget he lies!
Just like all those sermons he “forgets” Rev Wright giving.
Give me a break! If Democrats are dumb enough to nominate this man, they deserve to lose the white house.

Slowly and surely, all these little Obama lies will surface..and the people will learn who he really is. Thank YOU ABC for vetting Obama more than anyone has ever done before. Americans need to know how he handles up under pressure. Bravo TEAM ABC !! Well done Charlie and George.

Every time I want to give this guy the benefit of doubt he is taking an opposite position from what he previously did… Obama will say anything to anybody and expect you to believe it regardless of what the facts say… even more diturbing… there is many people that still believe him… this country is in real trouble but not from the economy or terrorist … but the educated morons who are hell bent on bringing it down

EXCELLENT JOB ABC! Charlie and George showed the other networks how professional journalists should act and how an impartial presidential debate should be conducted!
I hope the sexist jerks at the other networks watched last night and took a few pointers. Both anchors hit each candidate hard on the issues, pressed when either didn’t answer the question or tried to evade, but did so with RESPECT. Very good job. Really, ABC management, I was VERY impressed.
Thank you! Your actions show you care about American voters and respect their ability to see through the lies on either side and make a better, more educated decision. You really, really conducted the debate right! The BEST so far this election season.

It is interesting that the Obama camp does not feel that they need to address these issues that are obviously still on Americans minds…Rev Wright, the guns, the flag pin, the gun bans, Rezko…many Americans are still unsure about Obama. These things will haunt him in the general election. David Axelrod cannot spin this. The GOP is going to attack the front runner, but no one is questioning Sen. Clinton’s patriotism. Obama’s patriotism however IS questionable. If Obama is going to run for President, the American public has every right to know his stance on all the issues addressed above.

Excellent Debate! It is the responsibility of reporter to find the facts for the American people about all the candidates, so that Americans can discuss and then make an educated vote. One does not vote on face value and sweet talk. For many, many years the media has given the American people the good, bad and the ugly about the Clinton, what make the Obama’s thing they are any better! There still are question that need answers from Obama and his associations. Association too: Rezko, Auchi, Alsamarrae, Daniel Mahru, Daniel t. Frawley, Blagojevich, Seaus Ahern, regarding the Companion Security in Iraq and Obamas connection to the escape of accused Alsamarrae from Baghdad!

HILLARY DEMANDS LOYALITY WELL YOU GAVE IT TO HER.

WERE YOU THERE AT CAMP DAVID SEMINAR IN 1995? DID YOU EVER HEAR HER MAKE THESE STATEMENTS? THERE OR AT ANYTIME WHILE YOU WERE DOING YOUR JOB FOR THEM?
Sally Bedell Smith’s book “For Love of Politics: Bill and Hillary Clinton: The White House Years” — that Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, during a 1995 retreat called the “Camp David Seminar on the Future of Democracy had some interesting comments about working-class white Southerners who had left the Democratic party:
“‘Screw ‘em,’ she said, ‘you don’t owe them a thing, Bill, they’re doing nothing for you.’ Bill rose to their defense, ‘as if rehearsing an old but honorable debate he had been having with his wife for decades,’” as one attendee recalled.

This country needs Hillary Clinton as president NOW MORE THAN EVER. Last night’s debate showed Obama for the incompetent, lying boob he is. He is SO lacking in judgment and character. Hillary on the other hand ‘OUTSHINED’ Obama 100 to 1. Hillary has a brilliant command of the hard issues facing this country and has thoughtfully and thoroughly laid out a plan of action to correct the problems. This is something Obama has NOT done. I’m SO impressed and honored that Hillary Clinton will be the first woman president of the United States. She is an awesome role model for millions of women in this country and worldwide. Again, ABC – very very good job conducting an impartial debate. George and Charlie were EXCELLENT!

Obama may do well enough to get the Dem nomination but in the general election he will be toast. Way too many issues against him….Wright, Ayers, San Francisco remarks….his anti-gun postion alone makes him dead in the water. That is a major issue for a lot of Repubs and conservatives and they will turn out in droves just for that one issue. It handed over the House and Senate to the Repubs in the Clinton first term after he signed the assault weapons ban. He is not electable in the general election.

Posted by: Tom Annandale virginia | April 17, 2008, 8:29 am 8:29 am

It seems that Obama isn’t so great with “hardball” questions. The Obama team is squealing this morning! Ouch that has to hurt. How are the Democrats going to get past Rev. Wright running 24/7? How are the Democrats going to get past “clinging to guns and religion”? How are the Democrats going to get by babbling inexperience? Well, how will we? If Obama is the nominee, we won’t.
Obama wasn’t laughing last night! He just can’t figure out why people won’t just let go and skip over all of those details, so that he can get on to changing the world. Irritation, frustration, even condescending whining of “let’s move on past my personal weakness” characterized his performance last night. How will that play in a general election when people really vote and they can’t caucus and coerce voters? This is the system he would have to run in and all of the rhetoric of “let’s not be negative” will be useless wailing as he is eaten bit by bit by the Republican machine.
John McCain won’t play nice he won’t be constrained by legions of Republicans screaming for fairness. His base will turn up the heat and boil Obama. He was abysmal last night and that was nothing compared to what is coming up. Hopefully, the undecided will finally see what is needed, a candidate that can win against McCain. No matter what Hillary has done, she does not have to defend Rev. Wright.
If Obama is the nominee, hunker down for a least 4 more painful McCain Republican years. I doubt that we make it past those 4 because we will no long be on the planet. This is one of those McGovern moments. Obama sounds good to those who are mad and want a different system so they desperately cling to the idea that he will save them by changing a system that he does not and can not control and is not experienced enough to navigate. The world he lives in is imaginary, theoretical and ideological. However, it’s not reality. He doesn’t do well with reality.
Obama can’t close the deal for a good reason, real doubt about his ability to play in the real world. Last night was a preview of how he would do. The truth is he can’t play and win with the big kids, even with the puppeteers pulling all the strings. It takes more than a Messiah to fix this mess. We need a leader who knows and understands the issues and knows how to work in the real system, the one we have right now.
If Obama is the nominee, those clinging to him, will be bitter when McCain wins. So will I. Vote Hillary!

Posted by: AmazonTraveler | April 17, 2008, 8:34 am 8:34 am

The only viewers annoyed with the debate were Obama fans. He melted with really very simple questions asking him to explain some very simple relationships he has. Obama was not 8 years old when he went, hat in hand, to Ayers and Dohrns house to ask for their support for his run for the Illinois Senate. Everybody who is knowledgeable about politics in Chicago knows who Ayers and Dohrn are. For all the complaining here about how rough ABC was with Obama, they were just asking him about his own words, and his own associations. The most difficult of his associations was not even brought up, REZKO, and his meeting/not meeting (that he can recall) of Auchi. The debate showed just how weak of a candidate Obama will be in the general election.

Posted by: svsolis | April 17, 2008, 8:38 am 8:38 am

LA in Indiana: So what Ayers did 40 years ago when Obama was 8 years old shouldn’t matter? The fact that Ayers said on 9/11 “I didn’t bomb enough, I wish I did more” and Obama continued to associate with him and serve on the board of the Woods Fund with him shouldn’t matter? Some Americans feel that sitting US Senators should have good judgement when it comes to choosing friends, pastors and business associates. Obama feels it is perfectly okay for a sitting US Senator to attend a church that D–ms America. Obama says when us regular folks aren’t listening, that we won’t vote for him because we are clinging to our values and the constitution. Obama could not handle a couple of minutes of tough questioning, it almost seemed like he was about to stomp off the stage like he stomped off when reporters had the audacity to ask him 8 questions about Rev. Wright. Obama is not electable – questions about Wright, Farrakhan, Auchi, Rezko, Amsallaere, Khalidi, Said, Hamas and others are not going to go away – the Republicans can’t wait.

ABC TV DID A GREAT JOB WITH THE DEBATE!
PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW THE REAL OBAMA, NOT JUST THE PHONY IMAGE HE PORTRAYS WITH HIS SPEECHES.
OBAMA HAS MANY ANTI-AMERICAN MENTORS SUCH AS WRIGHT,FARRAGUT,AYERS AND REZKO.
ABC HAD THE GUTS TO ASK HIM ABOUT SOME OF THESE DESPICABLE PEOPLE WHO OBAMA HAS BEEN VERY CLOSE TO FOR 20 YEARS.

Posted by: joe smith | April 17, 2008, 8:56 am 8:56 am

Kevin: “If people cared, Bill Clinton wouldn’t have pardoned them in 2000.” You are very much ill informed. People cared very, very much about those pardons but there was nothing that could be done about them. Those were Presidental pardons and once done are done. Nothing legal can be done about that. Bill Clinton could have pardoned every serial killer in the country and guess what….they would have to be let out. Don’t mistake acceptance of a reality as “not caring”. It is not. Ayers and the Weather Undergound only add to highlight Obama’s anti-American attitude.

Front Page News
I don’t think Obama lied about the gun ban issue. He has consistently said it wasn’t his writing on the questionaire and who can prove that it was? Nobody. What are they going to do, get a handwriting expert to analyze this thing? No way. Actually i believe Obama when he says it wasn’t his signature. He has consistently said the constitution allowed for individual ownership of guns.
Concerning your friends being tired of the Obama ADS. The ADS are not for Obama haters like you and your friends. You folks would not vote for him under any circumstance. The ADS are for undecided voters who usually vote for the candidate they are MOST exposed to. This is a fact of politics.

If people cared as much as you claim they do, they would have held those pardons against Hillary. But guess what? They are not. I think any reasonable person would agree that pardoning those folks is far worse than sitting on a charity board with one of them. This is a very risky argument for the Clintons. But of course, the Clintons are not really making it. I was shocked Hillary touched it yesterday. IMO, that was a mistake. She should have allowed the moderators to do their jobs. Do you thnik people are stupid enough to give the Clinton a pass on this issue but hang Obama on it? Maybe idiots will. This question should not have even been brought up at a Presidential debate. That was a freaking disgrace on ABC News.

You are right. I think i have for the last week consistently said that the Democrats have already lost this election. They just don’t know it yet. Neither candidate can bridge the divisions in the party. I think old white women will not come out for Obama and blacks and young folks will not come out for Clinton. Take my wife for example. Even Jesus Christ will not get her to vote for Clinton, and she is a lifelong Democrat that used to love the Clintons. Where does that leave us? The only chance the Democrats now have is to form a whole new coalition and GOTV. I think that’s a long shot. Clinton has managed to torpedo the Democratic party. I think for all intent and purpose the Democratic party is tethering on the edge of a precipice. If this continues for another month, the party will be done. But we all know that at this point, this thing most likely wilol go to the convention and get very, evry, very, very ugly. This is a disaster and the Democrats at this point need a HUGE miracle.

Posted by: Kevin | April 17, 2008, 9:10 am 9:10 am

Kevin: since I can not give credit to Hillary (as she would like people to do) for her experience in the WH as being a player in events (she was not), I can hardly hold her responsible for pardons done on Bill’s part. He signed them and not her. And if Bill were to even think of running for another office (Senator or especially as a Governor) this would be a MAJOR hurdle for him.

No she didn’t hurt my feeling. Personally, i have always said that if she wins, i will vote for her. I was just making a statement based on my knowledge of how men perceive aggressive women in this country. ABC News did some grave damage to Obama yesterday, no doubt about that. And Obama was horrible. But Clinton CANNOT win without the black vote, this is a fact. And as the days go by, it seems Obama cannot win either. The Democrats are in a pickle here. This is our worst nightmare becoming reality. Let me ask you a question. If you are a Democrat, please paint a realistic picture of how this will end?

–Clinton has managed to torpedo the Democratic party. I think for all intent and purpose the Democratic party is tethering on the edge of a precipice–
Ha. More blame on Clinton. She ruined the party for having the audacity (pun intended) to run. And for having the will, to keep beating him in key states.. and for being such a crappy candidate, that he just can’t seem to finish her.. with DEMOCRATIC voters. I mean, if she sucked so bad, why can’t he just beat her convincingly? I mean, he’s had several shots, and it hasn’t happened, I doubt it will happen Tuesday either. So, why is this her fault? Why isn’t it Obama’s fault.. I mean, if he’s the second coming, why can’t he finish her?
And Yes, the party is in trouble, but not because of the candidates.. because of the leaders. They ought to declare a tie now and team up.. it’s the only way.. but if you hear Obama supporters, they are vehemently opposed. Even to Clinton as VP. So much for hope and unity? Ha!

. The explanation Barack Obama gave back in October in an interview with a local TV station in Iowa was “I decided I won’t wear THAT pin on my chest, instead, I’m going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great, and hopefully that will be a testament to my patriotism.”
OBAMA LIED LAST NIGHT -HE HAS SAID HE WOULDN’T WEAR A FLAG PIN.
and btw, he is running for President as a power trip, not because of patriotism.
William Ayres is just a neighbor? Obama chose his church and chose his neighborhood.

Wake up DNC – he is not electable. You can pull out as many 3rd tier super delegates to throw under the “out-of- control-bus-that-is-his-campaign” that you want but we can all see after last night THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES!!!!

Since I will not allow her credit for that “experience” I can not hold her responsible for acts committed by Bill. This is not having it both ways. This is called being consistent.

Your last point was right. But i think it is too late. I think when Clinton got so far behind, she should have dropped out. When she got so far behind that the only way she could win was to kneecap the front-runner, she should have bowed out for the good of the party. What her insistence has done is allowed what is now happening to happen. What we are now seeing is the front-runner (a front-runner with a near insurmountable lead) being bloodied by not only by a fellow Democrat (a Democrat he has evidently refused to fight), but also by a Republican attack machine that knows he has already won (against whom he cannot fight either because he is bogged down in a fight with the Democrat). So this is a group beating Obama is taking and at the end of this he will become UNELECTIBLE. Obama is bogegd own in a two-frontal battle. he is fighting a Primary fight while simultaneously fighting a General election fight. I’m not sure this has ever happened in American politics. The problem is, Clinton has already made herself UNELECTIBLE by losing so many contest including 11 in a row and alienating blacks. Besides, her negatives are sky high.

What the hell happened last night? Why didn’t they go back and check Obama’s kindergarten report card? Imagine what that would have revealed!!!

Posted by: Brenda Costello | April 17, 2008, 9:47 am 9:47 am

Obamabots argue that Obama can win the general with just the blacks, kids, and far-left fringe of the party.
What they fail to understand is that Obama has had republicans, independents, and moderates voting for him in the primary.
Many of the people who have already voted for Obama would not vote for him today. He will lose enough of them in a general that, when combined with Hillary supporters and the entire republican party base, will easily amount to a landslide win for McCain.

Posted by: HoosierSue | April 17, 2008, 9:48 am 9:48 am

ABC was brilliant. It is the first time the moderators didn’t give Obama a hug and a kiss. He didn’t do so well.

So much better than the lousy debate Russert mediated.

This is a core character issue. Obama comes up short because he is a typical lying politician first and foremost. You can get dizzy with all of the Obamabot spin being imparted to Obama’s inadequate answers. A quote comes to mind from Alexander Hamilton and nicely explains the Obamatons “Those who stand for nothing will fall for anything.”

Senator Barack Obama, while an intelligent, thoughtful man, is EXTREMELY weak without the crutch of a TelePrompter. He fumbled and hesitated, and “Ummed” his way thru last evenings debate in Philly – it was awkward and painful to watch. Compared to Senator Hillary Clinton, he looked like a complete and utter amateur. She, on the other hand, looked and sounded Presidential. I am dumbfounded that she is trailing [slightly] in the nomination process. Hopefully, Philadelphia opened many people’s eyes last night. She is Presidential, he is unelectable. Oh yeah, and when pressed on his signature on the 1996 handgun ban, he LIED. Again. The Emperor has not clothes, and no memory. Please give Hillary your help and support.

Obama does seem to have a good record. A record of cronic denial first, then when faced with facts, is forced to admit! This ignorance and arrogance is a mix for disaster. To place the future of our children and country in this man’s hands, which is what electing him will do, is to say I condone GOD DAMNED AMERICA! Obama’s arrogance to think he deserves the Oval office when he has jumped from “janitor to president of the company” in one leap, is ridiculous! Countries wanting to do harm to this country are counting on voters to put another ignorant Bush in the White House so they can continue round two, clean-up, after 5 years of Iraq sucking us dry and putting us in a vulnerable position, financially, and militarily. This is not Obama’s time. He needs to spend more time dedicating to learning the ropes before we trust him. He might start by wearing an American Flag pin, and respecting our flag first. I have my red, white, and blue sewn in my heart from birth, what colors is he wearing? Does anybody truly know?

It is interesting, re San Francisco comments, that he was not asked to defend his answer to the question, “Why are you losing in Pennsylvania?” This is when he chose to demean America. Now he is spinning the whole thing into a lie. I can tell when people are lying, and Obama had liar body language up until he was given a question with no controversy.
I still thought Obama got handled with kid gloves, but less so than usual. CNN and MSNBC have offered us infomercials but not debates. THis was a debate and Obama did not score so well!

The first tabloid debate I’ve ever seen!!!
An absolute embarrassment. Charlie & George put on the WORST debate of my lifetime.
THE WORST !!! The absolute WORST!!!!
It was the most silly and ridiculous debate I’ve ever seen. Where were the issues that mattered to Americans! American’s lost tonight!!
ABC should fire these two. The first 48 minutes was total nonsense!!!! Charlie, George, it’s the economy STUPIDS!!! Charlie & George both by stating stupid issues are making people not vote. They are disconnecting people from voting.
I hear TV is in trouble and this is one of the reasons why? They failed as journalists. I was embarrassed for our country to see this completely un level, unequal playing field.
ABC has just lost one Dances with the Stars viewer and one Men in Trees viewer and George’s Sunday show is coming off my TIVO!!!

National Public Radio broadcast this morning that Obama appeared to be off his game in last night’s debate. They went on to say that he appeared to stumble on several issues. They went on to say that he was bruised up badly. I was a little surprised at the word content in that report. So, reading through the posts here this morning it looks as if the Obama supporters are a little long in the tooth. My personal interest was captured in Obama’s past history and denial of the handgun ban issue. I believe in the right to bear arms.

Unfortunately, I think Mario Cuomo may be correct in that the only guarantee for Dems to win the GE is a combo ticket. Hillary is the only one who has said she would at least consider this; however, BO nixed the idea completely. I think there is no hope for the Dems if Obama is the nominee. He has disenfranchised too many Americans. Thank you ABC for asking some tough questions.

Definite sour grapes towards ABC this morning. I flip through all the channels and websites. I actually find ABC to be the only one willing to show both the good and bad on BOTH of the candidates. MSNBC is every bit as unbalanced as Fox is, actually I think they are worse then Fox. Fox didn’t choose a candidate and promote him endlessly as MSNBC has. I have yet to see them spin for a candidate. I used to watch MSNBC all the time but refuse to anymore, I now get my fair and balanced news from ABC.

The problem for Obama is that he really does not see any difference between his white grandmother and Wright or Ayres and Senator Coburn. He is so arrogant that no one can question his actions.

Gotcha!!! You’re right, Howard Wolfson. The man didn’t remember correctly. So, let’s punish him mercilessly. Let’s besmirch his good character. Let’s harass his family. Let’s ignore anything good he’s ever done and drive him out of public life. That’s what politics should be about in this country.

AmazonTraveler: “8 years in the White House as First Lady is valuable experience.
Dismissal of this experience is saying that witnessing and participating in events doesn’t contribute to your knowledge and understanding of the world.” I worked as a tech in a hospital for years……you would be utterly foolish to let me persuade you to perform an operation on you just because I have seen hundreds. As for being a Senator…excuse me while I LOL. She as been elected but hardly has done what I would call perform her duties. The Senate record is quite clear on her “accomplishments”. NONE. Since aquiring the job she has endlessly done nothing more than use it as a steeping stone to the WH. She has been endlessly campaigning since 2004 and before that every chance she got. She is a Senator…..she is suppose to craft legislation….while in the Senate did she even think about crafting legislation for her health care project……NO. She is in a better place to move that agenda forward than when she was First Lady but has elected not to be a leader on the issue other than campaign on it. If she had at least attempted to move forward on the healthcare issue as a Senator even a failure on this would have made this whole nomination race a non-event. She would have cruised easily through it. But she feels entitled and that she should just be handed the nomination just because she’s Hillary, First Lady to the Great One. Sorry, 7 years of campaigning doesn’t cut it with me. You are right about one thing though. She’s a better offer than Obama.

“Jounalism” at ABC News has hit a new low. In the midst of two wars, a plummeting economy, health care crisis and a host of real substantive issues, Stephanopolous and Gibson chose National Enquirer silliness over substance.

ABC:
So, you had a former Clinton aide moderate a debate between Obama and Clinton in which half of the questions were clearly designed to cast a negative light on Obama. And now this baloney? Hmm, not a great way to convince people of your journalistic integrity.
Have fun with all the right wing wackos posting their moronic rants on your blogs. Apparently you’ve found your niche market.

Posted by: geevill | April 17, 2008, 12:37 pm 12:37 pm

Obama did well considering. Clinton had her best debate to date but it’s probably too late. I would consider this a tie because Obama was attached on all sides and was on the defensive but did okay regardless and attempted to push the debate towards some substance w/o success and the negatives kept coming. Clinton not being attached as much had openings to discuss her view points and come across as the one to beat, which she is in Penn but will not be enough to go national unfortunately.

The British are big on protocol and it is significant that the Prime Minister met with Obama first. Barack is very big in Britain. Every where I go in Britain and all over Europe for that matter, when people find out I am American, the first thing they ask is how is Barack doing, is he going to win? You can’t even order a beer in a pub without the bar tender asking about Obama. They are all afraid that one of those other people might win.

Posted by: John | April 17, 2008, 1:07 pm 1:07 pm

I don’t believe it’s polite to question Mr. Obama. He supports hope and change, so what more do you need to know? I believe that we should roll out the red carpet and usher him right into the White House without even bothering with the election.

Posted by: Mack | April 17, 2008, 1:27 pm 1:27 pm

To Karen, no I don’t wear my “flag pin.” I don’t own one and my personal opinion is that whether someone wears flag pins on their lapel is not relevant. But to be honest Clinton was asked about a “poll” about more people thinking she’s not honest. I think that question ranked up there with the “flag pin” question.
But I do think it is fair for a candidate for president to be asked about their questionable long term associations such as Rev. Wright who has publicly and with no apologies said “anti-American” statements and uttered anti-Israel statements and apparently is also pro-Hamas according to a church bulletin.
Concerning Bill Ayers, how does the university where he teaches, have the right to forgive him for his actions or his words? They weren’t the victims of his violent actions or harsh rhetoric. As to why he’s still employed with the university, I have no idea. All I can say is that when I was in college, many “moons” ago, there were a few professors I had that left many of us scratching our heads as to how they found employmnent at all.

I’m not a Democrat but I wanted to see a debate of substance between these two candidates, Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama, and was throughly disappointed. If we are suppose to know these candidates stances on the issues that are important to us as Americans then ABC you really screwed that up. Your so called debate was so biased against Sen. Barack Obama it was hard to even watch and I’m voting for Sen. John McCain in the fall. Who cares about a lapel pin. Is that going to make the average American better off in this country? Whatever happen to presenting a fair and unbiased debate. How do you explain using a cabinet member of the Clintons, George Stephanopolous as a moderator and questionnaire of a debate where a Clinton is involved? Does this beg of unfairness or is it just my imagination. Since we seem to want to hear gossip and irrelevant nonsense why was there no mention of Mark Penn and Pres. Clinton’s support of Columbia NAFTA on Hillary Clintons side. What about her response to Pres Clinton pardoning two members of the Weather Underground? But ABC obviously wanted to attack only one candidate last night as witnessed by a neutral party. Sen Hillary Clinton I guess gets a hall pass on the nonsense by ABC. I now see ABC as another propaganda media machine and have lost respect for this network. I will not be viewing your programming in the future. Thanks for wasting my time last night on biased reporting. I’m thoroughly done with viewing ABC and Charles Gibson. Bye bye…..

Well well well, Barry is caught in another LIE. This guy is a corrupt, seedy liar and fraud who doesn’t belong anywhere near the presidency.

Posted by: Helmann | April 17, 2008, 1:55 pm 1:55 pm

I sat thru the entire debate and tried very hard to keep an open mind. Afterall, one of these two people could be the next President. The only problem I had with the moderators was not nailing the candidates on a direct answer to a specific question. or even an indirect answer would have bben nice. All in all, I think Hillary won this one. She seemed to maintain her composure (a good thing when times are tough as a President) and answer most of the questions, more so than Obama. She did loft a few bombs his way and one can argue it was personal, but I thought maybe there’s another reason: maybe she really knows that if he is the nominee that the Republicans will make mincemeat of hime with his questionable ties to Rezko, Ayers, Wright, and his perhaps revealing comments behind closed doors when cameras aren’t rolling and teleprompter is off. If the republicans can destroy the character of two very good, credible men (Gore, Kerry) without much to work with, what on earth will they do to this guy? Afterall, isn’t it MOST important that we elect anyone but a Republican who still thinks Sunni’s and Shiites are reversed and thinks GWB’s policies are “OK”?!
I knew once this race got really going, the mudslinging would start, as it tends to do when so much is on the line. But I also knew to try and focus on the message, the track record and the gut feeling I got watching all the Democratic candidates make their cases on the debates. So, here we are, 2 people left standing, a lot of mud everywhere, and my focus still the same: who do I believe will get up, everyday, and work their butt off for me and every hardworking American, because frankly, that’s what matters at the end of all this. Not Parties, not what-ifs, not should haves, but who I believe and trust to seriously get the job done to clean up this situation we find ourselves in, thanks to 8 years of lunacy. Let’s face it, America’s world reputation is in tatters, our economy is a mess, our troops are battered and dying, and frankly, we have a LONG way to go to mend the lines of divisions in this country: racial, gender, economic, etc. In a perfect, ideal world, we wouldn’t be voting for a person because of their “Party” and friends, we would be voting for that individual who has a track record of crossing those very lines and trying to get the important things we all want in life: health, wealth, harmony and happiness, regardless of, gasp, party affiliation. So, after taking that ridiculous but helpful little web questionnaire, watching all the debates, looking at the candidate’s records and just comparing resumes to resumes, I find myself picking the person that has a track record of what I am looking for. That person is Senator Clinton. She has worked hard and diligently for all Americans, and spent years (35) building strong relationships because she has a passionate vision of what America can be, not just because she is running for President. Senator Clinton is the right choice for me in ’08

Posted by: Sunny Florida | April 17, 2008, 2:06 pm 2:06 pm

Obama is not equiped for the job. He is weak. His liberal philosophy makes him weak, as he has knee-jerk reponses. Also, what has Obama done for Black people in America? Nothing! Underneath it all, he is a white boy through and through. His mother from Kansas was his moral guide through life. She rode througoh life as the great white hope, two times marrying someone she probably believed, deep down, was beneath her. In the long run, it is Hillary Clinton who had done the most for African Americans. I hope Blacks in America wake up before they end up with this “oreo” in the “White” house.

I would think that ABC of all news agencies would want to have an answer to this question before calling a presidential candidate forgetful, or worse, a liar.

You know what this is all stupid. If you don’t like Barack just admitt it and move on. I don’t think it was one of barack’s best performances but it was fine. and whenever they asked him questions they would keep interupting Him and you know that’s true. not only that. they sure was ready to bring up the rev. wright stuff that happend a month a go, but sure did not bring up Marke penn that happend a few days ago. I have said that I don’t think he has gotten a free pass in the media when you constantly being asked the same question 10 thousand time wouldn’t you be bothered two, and he did not avoid any answer contrary to what some here may believe. he answered and actually the whole bitter thing he answered twice – People who like hillary why don’t you worry about what she does, you weren’t going to vote for Barack anyway so stop you seem just as bitter as she does that he doesn’t have this nomination wrapped up already. I agree with some people hear I like when the ask Barack those tough answers because what it does is toughen up for the general so i guess we can thank hillary for giving him the experience he needs to move foward

He has had an amost free pass with the mainstream media while Americans, both Republican, Independents and especially Democrats sit by trying to find out who is Obama. And who is Wright and Ayers and his other friends and his relationship to them? And so many other questions I still have, but many being answered because you asked. After, maybe 20 debates on issues, it was time to try to shed some light on Obama’s character. Thank you for asking the tough questions.

Will the real Obama please identify yourself? It’s getting hard to keep up with him. First, words are important but they’re not important when he misspeaks; we are judged by the company we keep but in his case he doesn’t really keep company with them; he goes to church presumably to get some religion, but he doesn’t listen to his preacher; he isn’t negative about Hillary, it’s his campaign staff who are negative; he’s going to make a change, but what changes we’ll all have to wait and see.
Hillary isn’t perfect, but at least we’ll know who we’re getting.

He didn’t forget he lied. Obama has lied over and over again. How much Money did he take from Tony Rezko? How many times did he change his story? Did he hear Rev. Wright make controversial statements?

Why is it that we allow Obama to continually whine about Hillary’s lack of integrity, when he doesn’t seem to have one ounce about it himself? Obama is too crabby, petty and wet behind the ears take office as a senator, let alone President.
And I am sorry to say, the constant obsession with the projectory of life his is vain and unproductive. He bombed in the second part the debate when he was asked specifically about issues. His answers were rambled and worse yet, unauthoritative. Ignorance breeds stupidity; what will that mean if he is elected into office? And what does that say about the people who voted for him???

I thought Sen. Obama handled himself badly. He looked visibly irritated. This isn’t just what a campaign feels like, this is what the Presidency feels like and I sincerely hope Sen. Obama understands that a President has to deal daily with others (and the times) setting the agenda.
So he got stuck dealing with what he considers non-issues? Welcome to the big leagues. He doesn’t have much of a record which is why all the ‘character’ questions. Life and the Presidency is not Chris Matthew’s drooling over him, it’s getting hammered daily.
I’m certain that Carter would have preferred more Camp David Accorades and less hostages. Didn’t happen. LBJ would likely have not wanted to have his Presidency defined by the JFK agenda, didn’t happen. You can go on and on, starting with Washington.
You can’t do 2 hours on hope and change and you can’t do it on a skimpy resume. If your calling card is your judgment, then you have to expect questions about it.

Obama just keeps lying! He and his wife do not remember attending a party AT A MANSION IN WILMETTE, ILLINOIS. Yet another lie! Other people at the party remember that they were there. How stupid does he think people are? If he doesn’t start telling the truth soon, he’s toast!

MSNBC and CNN has been holding Obama’s hand for a long time!!! Way to go ABC!!!
For asking the questions the mainstream media has been afraid to ask Senator Obama. Senator Clinton has been attacked by the media a little more harshly than Senator Obama, but I don’t see anyone threatening to stop watching those networks!

I’M glad that you did the follow up.
It is better that he is challenged with
his “fabrication” NOW, rather than later. He has to know that his “MSM
cheerleaders” are not always going to be
the ones asking the questions. Not everyone has cable, this was the first opportunity one of my relatives had to
watch a recent debate. For more on Sen.
Obama’s “Lies” see -
http://www.AudacityofHypocrisy.com
None of these candidates is pedestal
material. They are all human, imperfect
beings in the political arena. Only Sen.
Obama would have us believe that he is
“above politics”. NOT SO. His history
in Chicago bears that out. We want our
strongest candidate so that we can win
in November. Obama’s retort on Ayers,
didn’t cut it. Pres. Clinton commuted
sentences of people who’d served 15years. Not people who revel in their past terrorist deeds and offers no apol-
ogy. This is about Barack’s judgement.

I saw some of the debate. I think the media has been holding Barack’s hand for some time. I think it was o.k. to ask all the questions they did, but they needed to move on from there and get to the issues. What was not good however, was the response from Barack about being asked questions he deemed unnecessary. Barack is very confused, or extremely naive that he gets to decide how many times the same question will be asked. Has he never seen a press conference?? Rolling his eyes, waving his hands to dismiss the question or pouting and frowning will only encourage the media to ask more of the same question. Somebody needs to counsel him about learning to put a smile on his face even when he feels like punching somebody. NEVER LET THEM SEE YOU SWEAT.

The focus was on Obama for the first 45 minutes because he couldn’t answer the question. He danced and twisted, deflected and lied and whined. Asked Hillary about Bosnia..I screwed up and I am sorry..end of discussion.

Chairman Dean – I hope you are reading this blogs! You’d better do something – IMMEDIATELY! Otherwise, the Democratic Party will definitely lose a genearation of voters to this absolute nonsense. PLEASE DO SOMETHING! You spoke yourself about ending elections where people vote on gays and guns – that’s what Senator Obama was talking about when he made those comments about clinging to guns and religion and YOU KNOW IT! SPEAK UP FOR GOODNESS SAKE! PLEASE!

OK, tell us exactly WHAT he wrote, WHERE he wrote it and what happened to the piece of paper afterwards.
I recall writing notes on many pieces of paper, some having nothing to do with the paper. And then I recall my boss sometimes writing on something “do this” and I was to handle it. Was it perhaps something of that order, or did he fill the thing out himself and write that we must ban handguns?
Details! Please!!

Posted by: BuckBurris | April 17, 2008, 11:33 pm 11:33 pm

I note one Obamanut tried to re-frame the argument, saying Obama didn’t “sign” the document.
Obama said his handwriting wasn’t on it.
Dishonesty in debate is a common trait of Obama’s supporters here.
Obama “refined” his position on another item on the survey, so why didn’t he on the other two items he now seems to have flipped on… an outright ban on the manufacture, sale and possession of all handguns and the death penalty.
How many of you knew that Obama was against the death penalty, but now is FOR the death penalty?
He was against guns before he was for them.
He was against the death penalty before he was for it.
I don’t care for his “evolution” on these issues.

Posted by: TruthWatch | April 17, 2008, 11:39 pm 11:39 pm

Go figure this is on the ABC site — right-wing media at its slimiest.
Guns are God! We must not mess with the people who want their guns. Ooooh.
Obama has repeatedly stated his support for 2nd amendment rights. Even if he did fill out the questionaire, which could have been filled out be a staffer, the questionnaire was concerning state legislation, not federal. I couldn’t care less what position he had on it earlier. It won’t decrease the cost of my healthcare, gas, won’t lower poverty rates, improve education or end the war in Iraq.
The rabid right needs to get a reality check and figure out some things are more important than guns.

I love to listen to Hillary speak. She is clear and concise and answers the questions. I know many say we don’t need to hear about these comments Obama keeps making. We need to get on to the important issues. Well, I want to hear about them. Every week he is saying something offensive. These are his true feelings, and what he says off the cuff is where his heart is. He said he was a man of faith. What faith Obama???? What I didn’t like was when the moderators asked him a question and he acted like he was answering it, and danced all around the question, blowing his cheeks (as he always does)and blowing smoke, (as he always does.)The moderators didn’t say, Obama you didn’t answer the question. I don’t know why people are so taken with him. I don’t see it.

Posted by: Maggie | April 18, 2008, 12:30 am 12:30 am

This is a joke…How could Obama not see this questionaire…you better check your fact the answer is right in front of your eyes…Better look again as what you claim is at “Read the questionnaire with the handwriting here.”

Obama has a history of waffling on every issue. And he is running constant attacks from his campaign.
The debate performance was so bad that it scared a lot of his followers. He is a smooth liar …notice how he looked straight into the camera when he claimed that his handwriting wasn’t on the survey?
The problem is it’s too late for him to distance himself from his campaign like he did Wright and Rezko…And it’s too late to claim he’s running a “politics of hope” since we all know the race baiting and constant character attacks that has made it’s way into the public discourse through the MSM.
It is painful to see the lofty rhetoric has no meaning. But it has been painful to see Ferraro and Clinton and anyone that stood in the way of this steamroller smeared and lambasted through a campaign while the candidate in all his hypocrisy says…Who me? That’s just my campaign….I bring you hope and change…
Remember everything changes ….I think I would rather go back to the 90′s than the 60′s where Obama wants to take us.
The Weatherman bombers who wish they could have bombed more buildings and Black ministers who live in 10 million dollar homes and teach that “rich white people” are out to get you. Syrian fixers who own 11 slums with no heat in Obama’s district but can come up with the cash to finance Obama’s campaign and don’t mind getting in debt to Iraqi billionares to make sure Obama gets his house.
How scary is this? And why didn’t we know sooner…Heck we could have gone with Edwards…Instead we are so impressed with the money and the crowds.
Bad news Barry Goldwater had a million donars decades ago…and McCarthy got huge crowds for his anti-war platform. Neither one of them became the President.
Don’t blame Hillary….Obama has as much baggage as she does but he packed it all himself.

Posted by: Jackie | April 18, 2008, 2:53 am 2:53 am

Wow, guys… These boards are getting increasingly shrill. It’s like the two candidates’ supporters aren’t even hearing each other any more. They’re just pitching insults now.
Before I declare who i’m supporting, may I just respectfully ask: why would anyone who claims to be a democrat ever consider voting for McCain? Even these candidates have pledged to do whatever it takes to elect a democrat, no matter which one it is. For anyone out there who thinks McCain is better than the democratic candidate you don’t like, close your eyes and picture the next twenty years.
Make sure to include lots of American casualties in Iraq, lines around the block at charity hospitals, foreclosure signs on every street, and worst of all, an ultra-rightwing Supreme Court chock full of young conservative white dudes who get to tell your great grandchildren what to do (and not do) with their bodies and their lives.
OK… I’m an Obama supporter, but I also think Hillary would be a kick-ass president and I’ll sure as hell campaign for her if she gets the nomination. That said, I think this was Obama’s worst debate performance.
Three reasons for this: one is that Hillary has consistently been the winner of the democratic debates. She is just great in debate forums. Has she ever lost one?
Also, tho he’s gotten much, much better, Obama has always kinda sucked in debates. He was uber-weak in this one, no doubt.
Finally, he had a bad night because this really was the first high-intensity assualt he’s had to sustain. It will only get worse in the general election, so he needs to man-up and learn to smile, show some poise, and generally do better.
Now I do have to say that I believe Obama is a pretty honest guy. Did he write the stupid gun survey? Who knows. Y’all don’t think aspiring politicians fill out a gazillion forms, surveys, policy statements, etc.? I practically have to fill out surveys just to post comments on a new website. BTW, many, many comments to this article name this survey as only the latest in a long series of Obama lies. I’m not being sarcastic here; I didn’t see anyone list even one of those other lies. Respectfully, I’d like a chance to read and consider the Obama lie litany.
But, if I could echo Obama’s central point from last night, this really ain’t the stuff we need to be focusing on. And neither is Hillary’s over-blown Bosnia story. Or John McCain’s profane remarks to his wife, overheard by reporters.
Are any of you commenters seriously saying you don’t wish a little more debate time would have been spent on the issues that we will face, no matter who wins the presidency? (What’s on your list of topics? Here’s mine: “Iraq,” “economy,” “healthcare,” & “climate change”)
ABC sucked on this debate. If we couldn’t talk more about the issues, then how about some questions that revealed more about each candidate’s approach to governing, since their policies aren’t very different.
How would they deal with a republican minority? Would they try to compromise or would they try to bully them? Would they appoint republicans in their cabinets? What kind of supreme court justices would they appoint?
Now, please go back to calling me an Obama zombie because I still want a debate about issues, not gotcha media moments, race/gender/religion innuendo, or democrat-against-democrat smears.

Observer, Princeton put Michelle Obamas thesis on hold because they couldn’t deal with all the requests. However it is no big secret – the Obama campaign has supplied copies; i read some blogger who said they had requested it from them and got it.
You may also be interested in a recent interview with Michelles freshman year roommate whose mother went to the college to try to get her a room change after her daughter called her in shock to say she’d been assigned a black roommate. Horrors! It’s not surprising Michelle -and many other black students in majority white colleges – felt sort of alienated. I have talked to many people who felt this way.

Maybe you guys could do some real reporting work and contact the campaign manager responsible for filling out the questionnaire, and ask HER? Because from what I can gather, it’s standard practice to have some lower member of the campaign fill out these things based on the general positions of a candidate, and they do sometimes make generalizations for their own reasons…if anything, it was a breakdown in communication between candidate and campaign. But there’s an easy way to find out. Ask that old campaign manager.

BHO is the choice of a pampered generation, an angry establishment (Kennedy & Kerry), and black millionaires! He has no values that indicate service to God or country! I respect the work and service of Hillary Clinton. I am not impressed with her personality or her political posturing. However both of them do that. They both have been caught lying, so let’s call it even there too.
Now let’s talk about work ethic and job performance. Barak is smart and lazy. He relies on his intellect alone. He hasn’t had to work to get by so he didn’t! I think the phrase is, “oh he is so articulate.” Starting to work because you want to be President is akin to studying 5 minutes before an exam. You’ll probably pass, with a C, if you’re smart and the class isn’t substantively relevant or challenging. I don’t think we should pick anymore “C/B” students, even if they could have been “A” students, because being President is substantively relevant and challenging.
Hillary on the other hand is also smart, but on the issues, has been going to work for nearly 4 decades! She has fought for children, the working poor, Black, White and Hispanic; she cares enough to go beyond our border to champion causes of civil and economic equality for all people with results.
Forget the rhetoric, the personalities or lack of them and let’s not kid ourselves! Barak needs to go to work and do something for somebody besides himself! He doesn’t deserve to be this close to the Presidency! It is an offense to every hard working, law abiding citizen, a disregard for dedication, accomplishment, and the personal fortitude it takes to resist the popular illegal activities that are the trappings of mediocrity, to reward BHO with either the Nomination or the Presidency! We all have character flaws, but he dares to insult us with his flaws as if they are badges of honor! He implies that we are too stupid to know right from wrong and that we are too ignorant to make a choice for someone other than him!(Florida and Michigan) Lets not forget all the signatures of his opponents he got erased when he was running for the Illinois Legislature.
Count every vote and if he is the nominee and subsequent President, then so be it! If every vote is not fully counted, then the change he’s talking about is a slippery slope that will lead to the full demise of America as land of the free and home of the brave!

Posted by: Vern | April 18, 2008, 9:49 am 9:49 am

This is a guy who vote about 130 times ‘PRESENCE’ It would do him a big favour if the survey form has a column like that reserved for him. Perhaps, he can make himself look good then.
Nobody seem to care he lies. When Hillary makes an overstatement, it was equated to lies. What justice!!!

Wow, James – Doing great in attributing all our problems such as economy, war, trillions, bringing troops home, etc. to the Republicans
BUT
Suddenly they are all also Hillary’s fault?!!! Are you nuts? Bill Clinton’s 90′s were one of our country’s most prosperous times and without war.
By the way, “democraticprocess” you are two months back in issues. Hillary’s record in the Senate is solid. She was reelected by large margin in NY with won support from upstate NY. Or, do you dismiss the voters as stupid?
To “Mack”, the Republican – Don’t join a family’s argument (Dems) in the middle and pretend you understand it. As a Republican, you don’t even have the basic concepts down.
Ditto to “Megan!”
“Jackie” one difference – If Hillary is nominated, you would campaign for her even though you wanted Barack. If Obama is nominated – we are scared to ____ to elect this unknown with the revelations coming out. The score keepers are marking up his lies or his conveniently not remembering or that isn’t important; let’s discuss issues. Barack is proving to be an unbelieveable disappointment to our hopes for a dream team. He is not qualified. I want to vote for McCain too if he is the nominee, but my major drawback is The Supreme Court. We did not take that seriously enought when Nader was running and look at the results. But can we trust Obama with that either?
