Obama: Hillary Throwing “the China” at Me

In Downingtown, Pa., Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., took the remark by the Clinton campaign — that she would be employing the "kitchen sink" strategy against him — a step further.

"You know, over the last several weeks since she fell behind, she’s resorted to what’s called ‘kitchen sink’ strategies," Obama said, per ABC News’ Sunlen Miller. "She’s got the kitchen sink flying, and the china flying, and the, you know, the buffet is coming at me.

"And, you know, look, I come from Chicago, I know politics is hard, you know, it’s not for the faint of heart, I understand that," Obama continued. "But when we end up involved in these constant distractions, these petty, trivial slash-and-burn, back-and-forth, tit-for-tat politics, so that we no longer talk about the things that the American people care about, that may be good for the television ratings, but it’s not good for you."

Forgoing for a moment any discussion over the "china" metaphor — certainly one that, intended or not, feeds into the "harridan" caricature of Clinton — how on Earth can Obama with a straight face decry these "distractions" when his campaign that very same day organized a conference call to harp on Clinton’s Bosnia-sniper-fire gaffe?

On that call, veterans of the conflict in Bosnia, who support Obama, attacked Clinton as having no credibility because of that false story. Gen. Walter Stewart (Ret.) said, "One of the inherent duties of the president of the United States is to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Memorial Day. Now, we can assume, and let’s keep in mind that Senator Clinton has said she was under sniper fire — or she joked about it, which, to me, was the cruelest part of all this, she joked about it with Jay Leno.

"We can make an assumption here that the honored dead within the Tomb of the Unknown was killed by a sniper. Imagine the lack of moral authority she has now to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Memorial Day. I’ll say this as a Vietnam veteran, hundreds — we can speculate about how the ‘Unknown’ died — but you go over to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and certainty, there are hundreds on that wall that died under sniper fire. That’s the incident, I think, in a nutshell."

Is Clinton’s Bosnia-sniper-fire story not a "distraction," while Rezko, Wright, Ayers, Bitter-gate, and the flag pin are "distractions"?

I guess Sen. Clinton though she had thrown out everything in her kitchen, Sen. Obama just threw out the remaining items she left behind. Go Dems.

“Throw the China”? Controversial?
Kind of reminiscent of when Obama called Clinton “silly”, was back when. If it weren’t for misogyny, this guy wouldn’t HAVE a campaign.

The wise are looking at the patterns. Who is taking responsibility for questionable associations and who is not? Who is revealing records and who is not? Who speaks to the issues and who provides speeches? Who votes on the issues and who chooses “present”? I know, generalizations. However, the patterns are concerning.
No way in hell will he get my vote.

I just watched a replay of the ABC Democratic Debate Clinton vs Obama and I was struck by the obvious negative and pandering tone by Stephanopolus & Gibson. Both “moderators” seemed to be only interested in the sensationalistic “gaffs” wasting 30 to 40+ minutes on the negative silly issues. Both moderators questions avoided the serious issues that face our nation like energy, health care, the failing economy until the end. Shame on you ABC news you just lost my vote for the evening news!

Rezko, Wright and Ayres, at least, aren’t “distractions”. If the Democratic “leadership” anoints this fraud, it’s going to be up to Democrats, via third parties and alternate candidates, to defeat him.

I agree with kid oakland. We got real problems and journalists are more interested in scoring points. Media should take blame for fueling negative campaigns as mush as candidates themselves poring over trivial scandals. Kitchen sink strategy works thanks to media. Real tough questions in a debate should be about how candidates who pledged to withdraw from Iraq will address the chaos that may follow, not Bill Ayers. What’s so tough about Bill Ayers question anyway?

Who cares? If Hillary Clinton was a competent leader and not some self centered drama queen this campaign would have been over long ago. But Sen. “Inevitable” wanted to sail to the White House on a wave of entitlement. When this failed then she fell back to what she knows, trash and burn. He/she who lives by the sword dies by the sword.

Jake, you are forgetting the context, remember that Hill has strated it and has pushed the distraction as much as possible during the last ABC debate. That is the reality. How many Rezkos, How many Ayers and how many Wright the Clintons have in their closets. It is real to move forward and try to answer to real needs of real people. The situation in Afganistan and Irak are worsening, the dollar is no more the money for international exchanges, people are losing their houses, and the economic recession is here and Americans are losing their jobs because Bill and Hill are shipping them elsewhere including to Colombia and gaining 800 000 for that job well done. Hill the Bosnian General has lost credibility and Generals are saying so loud and clear. The point is that American soldiers died in Bosnia and Hill was on comdy nights trying to laugh at that situation. That is real Hill, she does not care about anybody. God bless America and God bless Obama.OBAMA08.

I see no contradiction here. Obama has consistently taken the high road when Hillary has gone negative, and it has cost him. He clearly is not going to make that mistake in Pennsylvania — or anywhere else. He can point out her negatives and deplore the need to do so at the same time. I have no problem with that.
Perhaps if George and Charlie had followed up on Hillary’s admission that she LIED about Bosnia, and blaming fatigue — “I’ll have to get more sleep,” such as:
“If you knew it wasn’t true, why did you say it four times?”
“How can you blame fatigue, when it was repeated at different times of the day, including in the morning?”
“Why did you go on Jay Leno and joke about it?”
it wouldn’t be necessary for the Obama campaign to do it.

Posted by: jac13 | April 20, 2008, 10:27 am 10:27 am

Why Obama thinks he has the right to attack Hillary Clinton on personal issues, attack a Democratic President, the rural Americans, but then he plays offended if that is done to him? Why can he question anybody’s connecions, but he does not want to talk about his? Why does Obama does not show any passion about the USA or Americans?, Why doesn’t Obama explain why his wife also looks down on Americans?

Posted by: libre | April 20, 2008, 10:37 am 10:37 am

Jake, a lie is the opposite of a gaffe.
A lie is a well constructed attempt to fool other people. And since lying is considered to be a pattern in Clinton’s behavior, and in her communication with Americans, it most certainly is not a distraction to focus on that. Back in the 90′s in the NYT then First Lady Clinton was already accused of being “a congenital liar”.
Besides, the national polls tell us that 60% of all Americans do not trust Hillary Clinton. They call her ‘untrustworthy’. These numbers are not a result of the Obama campaign focusing on Clinton’s behavior in this race; they are a result simply of Hillary being caught in a lie time and again. It didn’t go unnoticed in America, for people simply witnessed it.
And now that Hillary is running for President, partly on arguments about her foreign policy experience and her “straight talk” as opposed to Obama’s “empty words”, OF COURSE her blatant lies about the landing in Tuzla matter enormously.
And notice: she came up with this lie herself, at her OWN initiative. It was not part of a defense, not part of having to react in public to some uncomfortable questions or issues, it was part of her SCRIPT: deceiving the American voters.
So, this is no destraction at all. Certainly not after we learned how Bush and Cheney have led Americans into the Iraq war by LYING to us, by deceiving America. Their lies have led to the deaths of more than 4,000 Americans and to an economy on the brink of a collapse.
In short, America can’t afford to have another liar in the White House, and that is why a focus on the Tuzla lie (that again, is NOT a gaffe) is not to be considered as a distraction in this race.

He is so hypocritical. He says one thing and his campaign does another completely. His campaign has been SO negative about Clinton and trying to tear her down. They have been trying to push Bosnia and were at the forefront of trying to paint her as a racist which is so wrong. They should be ashamed.
Obama has shown himself to be nothing more than a standard politician who will say what they want people to believe.
Why is no one calling out Obama’s hypocrisy?? The media seems like an extension of Obama’s campaign – they just keep pushing their talking points.

One of my favorite lies by Sen. Clinton is as to whether Sen. Obama is electable in the general election. During the last debate she said he IS electable. Yet for weeks now she has been telling the super delegates that Sen. Obama is NOT electable. Obviously she can’t believe both. The question is, is she lying to the super delegates or to the American people?

Jake, I think one could interpret the china metaphor as a reference to the valuable china museum pieces the Clintons too away from the White House when Bill left Office.
Maybe Hillary’s supporters might find a last argument for Hillary’s Presidency in that: it will give the Clintons a perfect opportunity to finally return the stolen goods.

Ten million saw him try to explain why he hangs out with terrorist and people that hate America.
They saw Obama fall apart under pressure even on policy issues.
They saw Hillary explain/apologize for Bosnia story.
No one needed to questioned her patriotism or love of this country.

Another day of Obama’s crying, since the debate this man has not said one solitary word on the issues facing this country.
Its only look how Hillary is treating me, what’s happening does he not have anything else to say? Has all his ideas dried up?
He talks of distractions while he engages in some of his own, why is not out there explaining his gaff about raising taxes that he was called on, why is he not out there explaining how he really feels about gun control after he lied saying he was never against it when there is written proof that he was?

Posted by: SJ | April 20, 2008, 11:00 am 11:00 am

Kika, we are at war with Iraq because Saddam Hussein lied. He wanted his neighbors to believe he had WMDs. And in doing so, he refused to admit to the UN Security Council that he no longer had WMDs. The UN Security Council decided that 12 years of Saddam Hussein refusing to comply with the conditions of the 1991 cease fire was long enough. BUT when the UN Security Council refused to follow through on its “final ultimatum,” President Bush stepped in.
Now as for the ties between Iraq and al Qaeda, President Bush, nor anyone in his administration, ever said that Iraq had anything to do with the attacks of 9/11. BUT, at least six months prior to our invading Iraq, al Qaeda had a training camp in northern Iraq. That is a fact!

I was struck by the recent McCain “temperament” expose article on MSNBC.com, at how similar McCain and HIllary really are. By all inside reports, they are both quick-tempered, profane, and repeat offender intimidators, who are widely avoided and disrespected. They deal with their colleagues in the Senate and Congress with a remarkably and equally disdainful and extremely vindictive manner. Please read the article. In other books, Hillary is said to be famous for her disrespectful rants against her Washington colleagues, with screaming “your nothing in this party”, and “your dead to me”. No one wants to cross either one of these two unstable personalities. They are not just ‘passionate’ about what they believe. There is no excuse for their unprofessional behavior. This is reflected in her kitchen sink and china throwing strategy. Wouldn’t it be awful if these two took the national stage to see who get be the most foul?, McNasty vs. McClinton, a total embarrassment for our country. We don’t need this old sound-bite driven old Washington hateful politics anymore. It would seriously demoralize the country and our young people. The press, however, would absolutely love it. Spare us.

Clinton’s lying (as she admitted at the Philadelphia debate) to the American public about military affairs and foreign relations is a profoundly serious matter, a great deal moreso than the Obama issues mentioned above (Ayres & the flag pin are truly silly issues by the way). I think Obama was trying too hard to win over Clinton supporters to criticize her for snipergate during the Philly debate…
And I certainly do hope McCain’s parallel scandal–the Baghdad market deception–receives equal attention during the general election campaign.
For me, and for millions of other Americans, lying to the American public about military affairs and foreign relations should bar someone from the Presidency.

He has no choice at this point
He has to shut this thing down – and that will be May 6th

It time some of you really start to think about Obama and that Capital Gains Tax cuts increases revenue, he has no idea what he is speaking about, and it showed when he was called on it.
He can dance all he wants on the kitchen sink talk, but he is a doo doo on the economy and will make a mess of things, that is a real issue and his views on this should be explored, he has not idea how to fix this economy.
That alone makes him unelectable, if his idea is to raise taxes that will affect everyone then he better take a long rest from this campaign.

Senator Barack Hussein Obama will be the next President of the United States.
Hillary Clinton won’t.

Posted by: Jade7243 Hussein | April 20, 2008, 11:16 am 11:16 am

Actually, Clinton’s Bosnia sniper-fire problem – IS NOT THE SAME THING as the other distractions – and here is why:
Clinton’s main argument that she is the better candidate is predicated on her experience, yet when she gives an example of relevent experience – the Bosnia trip – it turns out to be patently false. Also, it goes directly to her honesty and trustworthiness – we don’t want another Bush. These things are a big deal! They go directly to her qualifications and Obama is correct to emphasize it.
By Contrast -
The Flagpin is a distraction that no thinking person could argue goes to Obama’s qualifications or ability to govern.
The Wright Controversy and the Ayers (tenuous at best) connection also do NOT go to his ability to govern. One could argue that this shows a flaw in his judgment – BUT he has never acted in accordance with ANY of the most vile things these two individuals have said or done. So the judgment argument is moot and continued coverage of this IS a distraction.
The only ONE of these issues that even merit coverage is “bittergate” and that is pushing it – his comments did not bring into question ANY of his qualifications to be President. But, to be fair, this may be arguable – so I guess there is some merit in coverage of this.

Hillary has ALWAYS been a liar. The only danger in this campaign was that all of her acting as an honorable woman and politician might have made Americans forget about all that. That’s why the Tuzla lie has been THE crucial event in the primaries. Not a distraction, no.
Let’s remember about Hillary. Here’s a CNN report of January 14, 1996:
“In recent days, Mrs. Clinton has been criticized by those who question her account of her role in two matters under investigation: one involving the Whitewater land development deal and the other involving the 1993 firings at the White House travel office.
Mrs. Clinton embarked on a campaign last week to address questions raised by her critics, through a series of radio and newspaper interviews, but the efforts seem to have inspired a new round of reproach.
New York Times columnist William Safire on Sunday defended his calling Mrs. Clinton a “congenital liar,” in an essay that sparked the ire of the White House.
Another New York Times columnist, Maureen Dowd, wrote a piece published Sunday harshly criticizing Mrs. Clinton for her “secrecy and righteousness.”
Also Sunday, The Los Angeles Times declined to amend its account of an interview with Mrs. Clinton despite objections from a White House lawyer who said the paper misstated the first lady’s position on some points, including her feelings on a possible appearance before the Senate Whitewater Committee.
Neither have Mrs. Clinton’s media appearances served to mute investigations into her dealings with Whitewater and the White House travel office.
Senate Republicans announced Sunday they would continue to pursue White House E-mail in their ongoing Whitewater investigation which has taken a close look at Mrs. Clinton’s role in the matter. A member of the Senate Whitewater Committee, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said the committee has not yet decided whether it will be necessary to subpoena the first lady.”
WHO would want such painful events to be repeated in and around our White House again?
Folks, it really is no wonder that the DNC will never favor the idea of Hillary Clinton becoming our next President. Nor does the majority of the American people, for that matter.

Posted by: mozes | April 20, 2008, 11:20 am 11:20 am

‘Throwing the china’ – I people see that for the sexist remark that it is. Like he would make that kind of comment if Clinton were a man.
The truth he wishes this petty woman would have disappeared after March 6th but she didn’t and he can’t stomach the contest. He knows he was sneaking his way to the nomination without being fully vetted and exposed as someone with a very unsettling links to questionable people which won’t fly for someone running for leader of the free world.
Obama is really showing his true colours these last couple of days!

As for HRC, no one needs a person who is not credible, to much deceit, and what about those donors for the Clinton Library, who funded this? What are they not revealing? The Clinton’s set a double standard it’s okay for her, but not for Barack? She is not a fighter, only for their own personal gain, but not for the American public. What about Bill Clinton’s China trade deal? BTW, does Hillary’s Universal Health Care plan actually means that Hillary cares about the American people?
As the New York Senator, Hillary did not attend ANY of the New York funerals of the thousands who died in the attacks, nor did she visit even ONE of the thousands of New York families who were devastated by their personal losses.
So much for Hillary’s care…

Obama has had to show remarkable restraint in and out of debates, because he is running against a woman and fellow democrat. This is not meant to be misogynistic, just that he stands to lose a lot by being perceived as a bully and male intimidator. Remember what happened in Hillary’s run for NY senate? Obama has fought with both his hands tied behind his back, while Hillary throw sticks of dynamite at him on a daily basis. What do you expect him to do? Not defend himself? He can only respond on the issues and make comments about the polls indicating the widely held view of her as dishonest and untrustworthy. He’s reinforcing what people feel about Hillary in the national polls. If Hillary would like to confine herself to attacks based on reputable polls, that would be fine. Wonder what national polls would say about his not wearing a flag pin or his weak relationship with Ayers? New Newsweek poll has Obama leading Clinton nationally: Obama, 54% to Hillary’s 35%. Doesn’t matter whether she wins PN or not. The hype in PN is driven strictly by the press for ratings.

Every campaign has to critique/contrast with the opponent. I don’t think there is any doubt that the Obama campaign has been far less negative and the candidate himself has been far less negative. Obama hasn’t trotted out the Clinton baggage as the Republicans surely would.
Obama is a very good politician in that he criticizes the game even though he plays it (to an extent). Most of the public hears his message and not the conference calls. They get a very different picture than the media of the campaign. What will be interesting will be to see how this plays out against McCain who also claims to be above all of it.

Mostly I agree with the author about the hypocrisy here but Obama has a point. While Rezko, flagpin-gate, and the right problmems are indeed distractions, one could argue rather easily that the Sniper story goes towards personal character and Clintons over all impression of the electorate with such a bold lie.

Vanessa,
“In fact, Clinton delivered a eulogy at a memorial for 79 employees of the rooftop restaurant atop World Trade Center Tower One, according to an article in the October 2, 2001, New York Daily News. She also attended the memorial for Reverend Mychal Judge, chaplain of the New York Fire Department, whom she had met at a White House prayer breakfast. On the January 17, 2002, edition of CNN’s Greenfield at Large, she added, “I also have visited in the hospital one victim and met with many, many, many other victims who were either out of the hospital or who lost a loved one.”

Hillary is running a campaign that makes me embarrassed to call myself a democrat. The type of slash and burn/go for jugular tactics she is using do not reflect the type of person that I want to call my president- whether they work or not.
This campaign has brought into the daylight a clear schism in the Dem party and i would argue that the divide runs through a large chunk of the Repubs too. I have met so many Indies and Republicans who are sick and tired or politics as usual. They agree with the idea that just as our problems progress with complexity, so should our leadership and policy. ‘Old School’ thought will not fix ‘New School’ problems.
We need leadership that looks at the whole picture with fresh, innovative and progressive eyes… Someone who will ALL the tools avail. to tackle our mounting problems with foreign policy, our economy, our failing protection of civil liberties…
Thusfar only one candidate has shown us that HE is willing to try a new approach. Barack Obama has all but build a new political party. His campaign uses modern technique to fund raise, to organize, to disseminate information… we need someone who will look at Global Warming the same way… Health Care… Unemployment… the same way- a new way.
Barack Obama has shown he CAN and WILL.
He has stirred a slumbering movement waiting for a leader. A good people in need of a voice and transparency in our government. We are patriots. We are active. We are many. We are voting for Barack Obama.

EVERYONE seems to have forgotten about something Hillary said in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.
Rev. Wright blamed the anti-Americanism that was triggered by America’s wrongdoings if not war crimes in Japan and Vietnam. In doing so, he blamed America itself, most of his critics said.
But it was Hillary who blamed America for the attacks! Why hasn’t this become an issue after these Wright sermons? And Hillary made a much more silly and scandalous claim:
HILLARY BLAMED GEORGE W. BUSH FOR THE 9/ 11 ATTACKS!
And why?! Because of the Bush tax cuts!!
During a Nov. 11 interview with CNN’s Jonathan Karl, the former first lady insisted, “If we hadn’t passed the big tax cut last spring, that I believe undermined our fiscal responsibility and our ability to deal with this new threat of terrorism, we wouldn’t be in the fix we’re in today.”
How about that?
But of course, typical Hillary, only a month later she said about that same George W. Bush: “I believe his strong hand and words have helped to unify the country and give us the resolve to go forward in this war against terrorism.”
Should we laugh or cry about this woman? You tell me.

I think there is a big question of scale here.
Hillary has been running ads based on anti-Obama distraction politics. She’s been doing that for months.
Obama’s shown a lot of restraint in the things he brings up and if it had been the Republicans we would have seen ads about Flowers, Hsiu, Lewinski, Whitewater, and all the other Clinton corruption scandals a long time ago.
Basic truthfulness is more than a distraction it’s a qualification for leadership and we saw how Bill’s lying hurt our country too.

Posted by: James | April 20, 2008, 11:42 am 11:42 am

Hillalry’s Bosnia story is different because it involves her lying to the American people on several occasions. Bold faced lies. No one has to spin her words or take them out of context. She looked right into the cameras and lied. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

Posted by: ericajane | April 20, 2008, 11:43 am 11:43 am

HRC’s sniper fire fantasy is NOT merely a distraction. She repeated this “mis-speaking” story three times!! It is a story or a delusional personality that, strangely enough, echoes the delusional personality of GW Bush. The Wright episode in its original play was not merely a distraction but an important facet of BHO that he then answered with one of the finer, inter-racial reconciling speeches any of us have heard in the US for years. Soon after that, it should have faded, and is now Distraction. These two episodes are quite distinct and tell us a great deal about each candidate. The other stuff ESPECIALLY the lapel flag IDIOCY is truly distraction of the Atwater-Rove school to which HRC has DECIDED to stoop.

If Obama wanted to play dirty, he could bring up quite a few people that died under mysterious circumstances during the Clinton years and the ongoing investigations of their nefarious dealings. He could drop the name White Water. He doesn’t want to play dirty and has remained that way, except for a few things that he badly needed to point out – the out right lies she has concocted.
GO OBAMA – President Barack Hossein Obama will sit in the oval office in 2009.

Posted by: Mary Mansour | April 20, 2008, 11:44 am 11:44 am

Basically Yes, Bosnia-gate is a huge issue. It shows how well Clinton can look into the camera and tell a well orchestrated, bold-faced LIE….being associated with someone who committed a crime when you were 6 years old is not news to me…Rev. Wright is not an issue for me…he simply said what most Americans fear to admit….complaining about how the media mistreats the candidates is something that Clinton has written a book about…out of 20 plus debates, Obama does not complain but voices frustration over such trivals issues that took nearly an 1 hour of a 2 hour debate to discuss…give me a break…all of you Clinton and McCain supporters are full of crap…Barack Obama is going to be the President so start updating those history books now!

This boy(obama) is dangerous. He reminds me of the gipper (Ronald Reagan), espeially the way he throws the mud. He smiles, digs the knife with jokes, and doesn’t go for the jugular in the public, but is quite ruthless in the private.
I hope the cut throat operatives of my party realise this before we are doomed with this boy.

Posted by: rm | April 20, 2008, 11:45 am 11:45 am

The Bosnia story is not a distraction because it reveals her profoundly cynical contempt for American voters, which would play out this way in the White House: There would not be a single campaign promise she could be held accountable for, since “she needed to make such promise to win” – let her get away with this, and we would have another “imperial president.”

The Bosinia story is about a lie Hillary Clinton told with her onwn mouth numerous occassions, not one of her acquaintances.
The Bosnia story is a about a lie Hillary Clinton told repeatedly, even after others who were there had a different recollection.
The Bosnia story is about a lie Hillary Clinton told several times and didn’t apologize for, but tried to explain away and joke about. Not funny.
The Bosnia story is about a lie Hillary Clinton told, and expected her daughter, who was also there, to back her up on, which she dutifully did.
Do I think the Bosnia story is equivalent to whether or not Senator Obama wears a flag pin, whether his former pastor loves America, or whether he sat on a board with someone who was a 60′s radical?

Actually Jake, they’re categorically different.
The Bosnia-sniper-fire story is a lie – and a pretty blatant one at that.
Rezko, etc are bogey men that the media apparently relishes talking endlessly about.
Show us Obama’s Weatherman membership card, or his previously unpublished autobiography about how he hates America, and sure – these stories will be more than just “distractions.”

Mr. JT,
The Clinton Camp is like a camel pointing to his brother hump but does not like to discuss his. At least Obama stays above it, unlike HRC. THe role of campaigns and surrogates is to point out to the obvious, since the media seems to be completely blind to that. How come you are reporting the fact that the former president and his wife who is currently running are embroiled in yet again another scandalous law suit out in CA (by Peter and Paul), how can you not make a big deal out the Columbia flirting by BC while his wife supposedly condemns it (that is of much greater direct impact to most american workers than not wearing a flag pin, I might add.
How can you overlook the fact that HRC campaign is the first to have contacted the Canadians about NAFTA, and those very same people contacted Obama, to have a lower level advisor go and talk to them.
It is so easy for you guys and to write a paragraph with minimal effort on your part and play a fake arbitrator.

Bosnia IS less of a distraction than most of the other issues… Wright was Obama’s pastor so maybe that was fair game, Ayers was some guy who Obama once took $200 from and EVERY major person in Chicago has dealt with at some point. The flag pin issue is just ridiculous and the fact that ABC sought out this woman after her quote in the NY Times just to play “gotcha” with Obama is the most sickening part of all. Hillary lied to the American people face-to-face on more than a few occasions about Bosnia, then she refused to apologize for over a week. Obama faces all of these controversies and alleged controversies head-on. The main problem here is that while Sen Obama was using every opportunity he had at the debate to talk issues and give “solutions not speeches,” Sen Clinton and the moderators were using every opportunity to attack Sen Obama. If he doesn’t fight back, he’s weak, as Sen Clinton has tried to argue a thousand times this week. If he fights back, he’s the same as her. No matter what, her supporters and certain anchors who are obviously bias, are going to find fault with what he does. What’s important is that Pennsylvanians are hearing him talk policy and her talk distractions in this crucial weekend before the primary.

the more he opens his mouth-the further he puts his left foot in it.
It is a most sexist remark-so much for his celebrating sen. clinton for her chance at being the first woman president.
but lets go back to the debate.
obama and all of his supporters complained about how long it took to get to the issues.
and he did not fair well when having so tough questions asked of him.
but when they did get to the issues
one was on the capital gains tax-do any of you remember his answer?
well here is a part of it in plain speak.
if you are a nurse, teacher, fireman, or if you have a pension, 401k etc.
he is going to raise the capital gains tax.-in the sense of being fair.
now as I have said before in my comments
Mr. obama and is handlers and backers
a part of their phil. is claiming they are going to level the playing field.
it is only fair.
and I believe in fairness and level playing field. but
Mwhen you start putting all the pieces of the puzzle of mr. obama together-they are not about lifting america back to its greatness-so it can help the rest of the world.
mr. obama feels in all fairness america can and should be brought down to the level of the rest of the world. their phil. is we are big enough and have enough resourses we can stand to come down a bit.
Mr. obama can no more deny his mother and fathers marxist roots
than he can deny rev. wrights racist roots.
so all of you middle class supporters of obama-keep shouting about Sen. Clinton and the bosnia thing-and keep talking about monica and bill-
and put obama in office.
and watch how mr. obama is going to help you teach hillary and bill a lesson while he lowers your standard and quality of life.
obama should not be POTUS
obama is a leftist-stop listening to what he is preaching to you right now-and start looking at what he is going to do to you if he wins.

Considering that he was pairing the china with the kitchen sink and the BUFFET, I just think Obama mangled up his metaphor of kitchen stuff to throw at him with one that people with twisted minds want to interpret a certain way.
Throwing the buffet at him is hardly a typical woman’s thing to do though, right ?
And in that regard, when Hillary says “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen” is she being sexist too since there is a sexist cliche women belong in the kitchen ?
Don’t you all see how silly it is to start parsing every word for meaning we know they didn’t have.

I fully agree. How can journalists identify the content of these two?
It has been a sad, sad affair to read the lines written about the Democratic race for the last couple of months. Journalists lost every bit of integrity and intelligence just in order to have an explosive story. They should be ashamed of themselves and of condemning their once honorable profession (and vocation) to cheap sound bites.

Posted by: eatr | April 20, 2008, 12:03 pm 12:03 pm

Actually Jake their is a huge difference between the Bosnia Story and Bittergate or the words of Mr. Wright.
In the case of Bosnia, Hillary has knowingly made false statements multiple times to make her seem more experienced in foreign policy matters and more courageous. These are not just variations on truth, they are lies. Not Misspeaks.
With Bittergate, Obama chose an unpolitic way of saying something that many believe to be true – that often people will vote against their own economic interests because of wedge issues like gay marriage and guns. This is not a LIE, this is a perspective.
As for Wright, Rev. Wright is NOT Barack Obama, and Wright is a fiery preacher, who like so many other American preachers (Hagee, and Parsley among them) have said outrageous things. Again this is very different then the Candidate them self making statements they know are false. All things are not equal.

Posted by: daisy | April 20, 2008, 12:05 pm 12:05 pm

“Is Clinton’s Bosnia-sniper-fire story not a ‘distraction,’ while Rezko, Wright, Ayres, Bitter-gate, and the flag pin are ‘distractions’?”
Yes.
Rezko is the only one that’s borderline legitimate, since it goes to a considered decision by the candidate, much as Hillary’s repetition of the sniper story even after it had been questioned was a considered decision. You could argue that, if Obama had been present when Wright made a similar remark (which he wasn’t during the “God damn America” speech), he should have objected or got up and left. But that’s a sin of omission. On the other hand, I find it hard to believe that McCain or his advisors were not aware of Hagee’s own brand of rabble-rousing when they decided to actively court him, and to make sure McCain was there in person to receive his support.
Given the craven attitude of the mainstream media over the past seven years (eight, if you count the uncritical coverage of the Bush campaign), I’m not surprised that ABC is in the tank for one particular candidate.
What is surprising is how obvious and artless you are about it.
As for the flag flap, give me a break. McCain doesn’t wear one, and the “leaders” who do are the ones who have worked overtime and underhandedly to tarnish the ideals it’s meant to express.
And isn’t forced worship of national symbols something we’ve always associated more with places like Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and North Korea than with America?

“People have only forgotten about the Clinton scandals…
WON’T TAKE MUCH TO REMIND THEM”
Now THAT, I would say, is the truth and nothing BUT the truth.
As a Presidential candidate Hillary has NOT been vetted, for the simple reason Obama did’t use ANY of the Clinton scandals against Hillary, and because McCain expects to be running against Obama.
Would McCain run against Hillary, the name ‘Clinton’ would soon become _ thanks to the attacks of the REP fighting machine – the dirtiest and most suspect name in the history of American politics.
TOTAL unelectability would be the result, and some of the Clinton cases and gates might even be re-opened. It would become the dirtiest fight ever in a GE, for the Clintons would take EVERYTHING out that they have against McCain. And that is quite a lot as well.

Posted by: kika | April 20, 2008, 12:07 pm 12:07 pm

The obvious difference between the Bosnia story and the Ayers story or the Wright story is that the Bosnia story is Hillary’s own doing, based upon her own dishonesty. Ayers and Wright are guilt-by-association attacks, launched by the Clinton campaign in a desperate attempt to revive a failed campaign.
The fact is, Barack Obama will be the Democratic nominee. If you want a Democrat in the White House, you’d better back him now, because if you don’t, you’re going to be complaining about “that idiot McCain” soon enough.
Hillary Clinton is trying to ride a dead horse to the finish line. It’s over.

I think it is ironic that whenever CLinton brings up some issue that Obama has (whether it be Wright or Rezco or bittergate) his followers cry out how she is running a negative campaign. But when Obama calls Clinton dishonest, disingenuous and stating she will do anything to win, he is simply stating out truths. Please! He is a dirty politician that just has a diffrent way of playing the game; let the press and his staff attack her while he tries to stay above it. My biggest issue with him is that he is all talk and will not accomplish any of his promises IF he were to become president (just look at his IL and Senate records).

Posted by: Andrea | April 20, 2008, 12:09 pm 12:09 pm

There is a HUGE difference.
In one instance, we have Hillary repeatedly, willfully telling a flat out whopper of a lie. Honesty is deeply substantial. This is something Hillary herself actually did.
In the other instances, we have things like flag pins that are laughably meaningless. Or we have Rovian attack dogs trying to blame Obama for the actions of others who Obama has had barely any association with.
There is a HUGE difference. And again, Obama comes out on top in the measurement of character.

Politics – ick – they are all politicians. But given that there are choices being made – I do think it is different when the actual candidate is bringing up all the past stories. Hillary and BIll have been calling Obama a whiner/weakling – because he expressed disappointment over the time wasted on “gotcha” questions rather than substantive issues. That is silly. Also, during the debate Hillary took every opportunity to pursue those points against Obama. He did not pursue the Bosnia story and how it puts her credibility into question. So while his campaign may – what the media does not say is in what context. Were they asked about it or in response to something Hilary’s campaign has been doing?? At the same time Obama – the candidate – has not been resorting to personal attacks on Hillary’s character or scandals – in his speeches. He criticizes on her for taking more $$ than any other candidate from lobbying groups – this is a political issue. She claims he cannot fight special interests because he did not like the last debate’s discussion – but how will she fight special interests if their money is financing her campaign. this is ABC – hardly objective in this matter given they hosted the debate.

If she is capable of LYING to the public about Bosnia (repeatedly), then what will she lie to you about next if she steals this nomination. The color of a persons skin should NEVER be a deciding factor for voting; the primary trait you should be looking for is character and Obama has that over LIAR HRC! How can you vote for a LIAR? HRC who has split the Dem Party in an attempt to win (just so she hascan gain the power she envisions should be hers/theirs)! She and Bill will be worse than Bush/Cheney. Her 1995 remarks of “screw them” (meaning us) have not changed because that’s really how she feels about the working class of this country right now. She will “ACT” like she cares (have a beer and tell you how she shot a defenseless duck), but that ACT is simply being done long enough to get your vote. During the “This Week” roundtable after McCain, Cokie Roberts said :
“people don’t choose presidents from their policies. people choose presidents from a gut check – because they like them as people.’
So why, Cokie, do we bother having journalists and reporters. Or should we just accept that now they’re basically sensationalistic gossip columnists and move on. Jake and Cokie work for The National Enquirer, by her standard. Are we happy with anyone yet?
She then went on to suggest Obama not question the question. In other words, she and Sam Donaldson defended ABC. Even as George Steph kinda backed away from the whole mess himself. George WIll was wrapped in the capital gains tax.

I’m not invested in personal & lavish displays of patriotism — and in this country, above all, they ought not to be demanded of anyone — tho I respect those who express their feelings for this country in those ways. That said, when Clinton’s lies (they were not merely misrepresentations) about Bosnia emerged, I was pretty unimpressed by her casual dismissal of the matter. And I was truly shocked by the joke on Leno. To fight in a war, or to live in a country mired in war, is something most of us are spared . . . and the realities of what we are spared, through someone else’s service and sacrifice, or someoene else’s misfortune, is not something to joke about if you want to be commander in chief. It shows a streak of cruelty and indifference about suffering, and about service, that should make us shudder.

Ah Hah! Therein lies the rub.
If Obama doesn’t respond to the attacks, he’s called “too weak to win” the General Election because the Republicans will do this…
If he does respond to the attacks, he said to be engaging in the politics he condemns and hence a “hypocrite”…
A clever Catch-22, eh wat!
But the truth is, he can’t not respond to competitive attacks and stay in the competition. So let’s be real here Jake… and stop thinking that no one but you understands the game. We’ve all attended before.

I think the Bosnia-sniper-fire story not a “distraction,” because it hits the Hillary personality triats dead on, LIES! Hillary is always changing what she said as it pleases her!
While Rezko, Wright, Ayres, Bitter-gate, and the flag pin are indeed distractions”! None of these have any thing to do with Obama’s charactor or personality. As for the flag pin, my God why was Hillary not drilled why she did not wear a flag pin at the last debate if its such a news worthy story LMAO.
GO OBAMA 2008!

To the Church of Toast, can i hear an amen!

Posted by: pembleton | April 20, 2008, 12:29 pm 12:29 pm

I agree and disagree, Tapper –
I agree that the trivia raised by both candidates demeans us, and demeans the process. I’m so tired of hearing it. I’m tired of hearing sound-bites, as if the whole country had ADHD and the mainstream media doesn’t think it can hold our attention for more than 5 or 6 seconds on one subject.
But the Bosnia story is substantially different from both the flag pin and bitter-bones. Different because it was a story, manufactured from beginning to end (except for the geographical setting) from whole cloth from beginning to middle to en. As a narrative of supposed experiences, real events, told earnestly and repeated, it entertained her listeners and made a point, as she recited it with the an authoritative, “I remember when …”
– And it was all made-up. There’s simply not another way of looking at it. At the debate she “apologized” for it, but here it matters what “it” is. What error did she apologize for? She didn’t say. Was it a poor choice of words, like “bitter” instead of “frustrated”? She said “sniper-fire” when she meant to say “poetry”? That “ducking and running” was a slip of the tongue, when she meant to say, “stooped and stood” there with a little girl? The fact here, if the news media dares to call it such, is that the “it” here is a lie. Or if not a lie she dreamt it, which has leadership implications all its own, but I don’t think that’s the case.
Then with her “explanation” she fooled us twice. Did she think we were not paying attention this time either? — “sleep-deprived,” campaigning too long… This might have been a fair explanation for a slip of the tongue, a mistake about which year it happened, or even which country if she conflated what happened to her in Bosnia with what may have happened to her in, say, Iraq or somewhere else where the key point — facing danger under sniper fire — was in fact true. But it does not explain why she made up a story of deeply moving experience that did not happen. Sleep-deprivation makes her lie, is that her apology?
Then her husband repeats the same lie about the lie — “late at night…” Yeah, like “I never had sexual relations with that woman…”
What Stephanopoulus and Gibson implicitly did in weighing four Obama-troubles like flag pins, relations with an old radical, what Obama’s pastor was saying, and “bitter” vs. “frustrated” on the one hand against one Clinton-trouble on the other, was to put an equal sign between them. Here’s where I say the analysis does not go beyond the superficial. A made-up story, told to make a point that was not true, passed off repeatedly as true (embellished further each time) until the teller is caught, and then dismissed with joke (actually, with joke after joke after joke about it) — that’s not a “gaffe,” and it deserves deeper attention. But ABC set up the debate to call this a gaffe, a mis-speak, a mistake, something other than a lie.
And you’re repeating the point here: “Bosnia and bitter-bones are the same.”
And they’re not.
But soon ABC’s viewpoint, with a few more repetitions, will become fact.

Obama is such a wimp. If he’s complaining now about the way the media is supposedly treating him, he ain’t seen nothin’ yet. It’s certainly not the media’s fault that he associates with radical, anti-American ministers, domestic terrorists, and crooks from the south side of Chicago. Much to Obama’s disdain and peril, it looks like his honeymoon with the media is finally over, and it appears the real Obama has come home to roost.

How then are they going to be able to support Obama when he wins?

I think Hillary’s “jokes” about the sniper fire were among the worst and most unpresidential things I saw of Hillary in this campaign.
I have visited Sarajevo two years after the war ended there. Without going into any details of the stories I heard from the good people there, let me tell you this:
YOU CAN NOT MAKE JOKES ABOUT SNIPER FIRE
To me it proves that Hillary is completely out of touch with what people went through in Kosovo and Bosnia. It’s shameless, it’s icy cold and arrogant.
I’m a grown up man in his forties, but when I saw Hillary joking about this, while remembering the still mourning people of Sarajevo, I got tears in my eyes, anger and sadness, – because I imagined how the folks over there would feel if they would have been able to see her at Jay Leno’s show. I truly think Hillary Clinton is a totally superficial, opportunistic and quite horrible woman.

Obama knows he has to watch how he retaliates. Remember Rick Lazio, O.K., how can you remember one you never heard of. He ran against her in her first senate anointing and the ‘beast’ invaded poor pit bull’s personal space wanting her to put her rhetoric in writing, and was never heard of again (or before). Yet this is the candidate she thrashed so thoroughly in NY state and I don’t even remember who ran against her for her second anointing.

This guy still comes off as a snooty backbencher with a good speechwriter. I noticed all sorts of snide stuff in that “brilliant” speech, for instance, about how the blood of slave owners ran in his wife’s veins and had been passed down to his precious daughters.” He has so-called white blood–I don’t believe there is a gene that causes people to desire to own slaves. So this comment was to incite–to guilt-provoke. This guy is very sneaky–wait, we are supposed to say, “nuanced.” If he gets elected, we will face 4-8 years of him looking down his nose (literally), and watching his academic buddies try on govt jobs for size. Trust me, there will be some weirdass problems…and everyone will say, “But we didn’t know…”

First of all – nothing negative started until Hillary started it; Second – Bosnia is a lie that Hillary told specifically to boost her “qualifications” for President, and what she is doing to Obama is McCarthy-like guilt by association tactics. There is no comparison. Third – I know you, Jake, and the rest of the press know points 1 and 2 to be true, yet you act like you don’t for your own purposes. That’s why the ABC debate was a travesty.

The title of this article is completely misleading and is exactly the kind of example of playing the politics of distraction. Instead of intelligently discussing China (PRC) (the country and not china from the dining room) with people and the candidates, the writer resorts to taking the word out of context and making it into a soundbite that is completely unrelated. For those of us who are interested in real issues pertaining to China, thus having followed the link to this article, it’s a real disappointment. I think we deserve so much better than this kind of politics and writing of distraction.

First reports are coming in of Chelsea’s Philly ‘gay bar crawl’… I just wonder how small town PA will appreciate it:
Chelsea Clinton stopped traffic Friday night as she wandered the streets of Philadelphia on a gay bar crawl, winning rave reviews for both her politics and her appearance.
Led around the neighborhood by Gov. Ed Rendell, Chelsea was mobbed by local gays and lesbians, as she walked from one club to the next. They ran up to hug her, posed for pictures and certainly invaded her personal space.

Jake Tapper asks, “how on earth can Obama with a straight face decry these ‘distractions’ when his campaign that very same day organized a conference call to harp on Clinton’s Bosnia-sniper-fire gaffe?” Clinton’s repeated Bosnia-sniper-fire was not a gaffe; it was a lie, and it is therefore relevant to her qualifications to be President. By contrast, Obama’s “bitter” comment was a gaffe, which means that it was true but in artfully stated.

Why is everybody calling these “Gotcha” shows “Debates”. A debate indicates that both people will be asked THE SAME questions, and have the opportunity to respond to the answer of the other candidate. Hillary should have been asked why she didn’t wear a flag pin.
All of the questions in the first 45 minutes were aimed specifically at one or the other candidate. They were not something that the other candidate could answer other than to give them the opportunity to bring up the issue AGAINST the other candidate and “pile on”. The choice of questions for the recent ABC “debate” created such a farce

Well, perhaps I’m revealing my bias, since I’m for Obama. That said, I think he has been considerably more on the taking end than on the dishing out end. That Clinton has been flinging not only the kitchen sink, China, buffet, but some of the contents of the latrine.
And we all know McCain will pick up where Hillary left off when it comes his turn. That Hillary is doing the softening up. Preparing the terrain with aid of the far rightwing playbook
But what strikes me as truly strange is the Bosnia story. Why concoct it? Did she convince herself it’s real, and if so, what does that say about her state of mind? Was such a silly story really necessary?
Anyway, it’s small time, I think, compared to her permutations regarding the Iraq War. On that considerably more important issue she has not been at all honest. And she could have simply admitted her mistake the way Edwards did and everyone would have forgotten about it.
Would Obama have voted at all differently if he had been in the Senate? We don’t know. But Hillary was definitely looking forward toward her run for president when she voted “yes.”

To Sonia Trevino: If you are going to post in public forums, you really should get your facts straight. On March 28, the University of Chicago School of Law released the following statement — Sorry sweetie, to confuse you with the facts…
“The Law School has received many media requests about Barack Obama, especially about his status as “Senior Lecturer.” From 1992 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004, Barack Obama served as a professor in the Law School. He was a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996. He was a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004, during which time he taught three courses per year. Senior Lecturers are considered to be members of the Law School faculty and are regarded as professors, although not full-time or tenure-track. The title of Senior Lecturer is distinct from the title of Lecturer, which signifies adjunct status. Like Obama, each of the Law School’s Senior Lecturers have high-demand careers in politics or public service, which prevent full-time teaching. Several times during his 12 years as a professor in the Law School, Obama was invited to join the faculty in a full-time tenure-track position, but he declined.”

Clinton’s Bosnia story is an outright fabrication repeated several times by the Senator both in prepared and off-the-cuff remarks. The other items are things said by people other than Senator Obama, or so trivial and petty as to merit only obscurity. That is why the former is not a distraction and the latter are.

how on earth can Obama with a straight face decry these “distractions” when his campaign that very same day organized a conference call to harp on Clinton’s Bosnia-sniper-fire gaffe?
Answer: Who started the war? Who was the first to employ the scorched-earth tactics? Who said this was the fun part of politics?
I think Obama has shown considerable restraint. When she announced that she’d of left her church if her pastor had made such remarks I wondered why she didn’t leave her lying, philandering husband who humiliated her in front of the whole planet.
Wanna know why she didn’t? Because she wanted to be president and couldn’t get there without him.

Wish he had been quoted correctly – I’m sure he said politics was not for the “faint of heart” but the ignorant transcriber wrote “feint of heart”. That is a suggestive phrase, but if it describes anything, it is duplicity. Neither duplicity or weakness applies to Barack, and that is the strength that people see in him.

I was truly looking forward to viewing the ABC debate on Wednesday between Senators Clinton and Obama, but due to George Stephanopoulos’ getting talking points and questions for this debate from Sean Hannity and conservative radio talk show hosts who have shown racism, sexism, and open hate and hostility toward Senator Obama, I am appalled with the ABC news organization and no longer perceive ABC as a “honest broker” in terms of this election. George Stephanopoulos’ tactics are quite similar, in my view, to what ABC News Contributor George Will did to President Jimmy Carter when he debated then Governor Ronald Reagan in 1980. It is well known that Will gave Reagan the debate questions before the debate to foster a win for him. Did Stephanopoulos do the same thing as did Will, who is portrayed by ABC as a legitimate and unbiased legal analyst? Therefore, I find Stephanopoulos’ behavior on Sean Hannity’s radio program to be profoundly unprofessional, especially since he formerly worked for President Bill Clinton. Was Stephanopoulos trying to foster a win for Senator Clinton during the ABC debate? This debate, to me, was a “tainted” disaster and insulted the intelligence of the American and world viewing communities. I stopped watching “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos a while ago as I find his program to be staid, scripted, and biased. There only appears to be one point of view offered (i.e., conservative) and seldom does this show offer viewpoints from persons other than Cokie Roberts and George Will. Moreover, I find Stephanopoulos willingness to receive debate questions from Hannity to be telling about his ethical conduct or lack thereof, especially since he has an apparent conflict of interest by formerly working for President Clinton. Also, each night on Fox News, Hannity conducts an unfiltered and unchecked hatchet job on Senator Obama and many conservative talk show hosts do the same each day. From my perspective, ABC news is attempting to destroy Obama’s candidacy for some reason. Is it because he is a person of color? ABC news is acting like an arm of the RNC and of the Clinton campaign? I have begun to contact ABC’s sponsors about my concerns. Where was substantive questioning by Gibson and Stephanopoulos in terms of Clinton and Obama on jobs, healthcare, housing, education, energy, the environment, security, etc. Gibson and Stephanopoulos wanted voters to get agitated over social/wedge issues (i.e., gun rights, wearing of the flag lapel pen, and personal associations). American citizens are smart and thinking people. They are not stupid as seemingly thought by Gibson, Stephanopoulos, and ABC. It is time for American citizens to get real about what is going on in their country and to reclaim it for themselves and their children. Why didn’t ABC provide the American people with a clean, fair, and balanced debate if is to indeed be a credible news organization whose information can be trusted? I really missed Peter Jennings on Wednesday night as he would have never been associated with this type of yellow journalism. He was a class act. Jake Tapper, your article is another biased “hit piece” on Senator Obama and offers nothing of substance or value to those reading it.

Actually Wright, Ayres and Bittergate are distractions but Bosnia and Rezko are not….
Why Wright, Ayres and Bittergate are distraction are firstly Wright and Bittergate’s were both taken out of context (have you read a total Wright speech? One of the ones we have seen soundbites on? Hes does not hate America, quite the opposkite, he loves it and criticises it in the most harshest of terms when it deviates from the vision of what it could be…he extolls is to be better, the language might be harsh and my opinion offensive and inappropiate but the intention is clear). Plus Obama did not say those things, Wright did. Bittergate, you know what he was trying to say, that when the population has given up on the government looking after them on the big issues they can be distracted to vote on cultural issues….don’t vote democrat, they are going to take your guns!! Diverting them from the issue as to what is going to happen to your economy. Finaly Ayers, come on, this is tenuous, they served on a board together. That Ayers is on such a board shows he has been rehabilitated by society plus Bill Clnton pardoned two of the Weatherman….Newt Gingrich is already out there today saying how the Democrats admire terrorists, using this and Bill Clinton’s pardons of 60@s activists to boost his argument. He is trying to swing people votes today based on this! What has this todo at Aemrica’s present challenges?? This is not a distraction?
Why Rezko and Bosnia are not distractions are as follows. Rezko worked with Obama and raised fnds for his campaigns and so it was appropiate he was questions thoroughly about it and it is appropiate he is continued to be questioned about it. He better accept that. Smae with Hilary, her Bosnia fantasy repeated 4 times and different times of the day was clearly more then just misspeaking. It was a calculated attempt to embelish her record and as such deserves repeated examination. Both Rezko and Bosnia go to the heart of their honesty and integrity. To be fair Obama has in great detail explained Rezko, especially to the Chicago Tribune. Hilary is still maintaing Bosnia was a an unintentional gaffe…

I know that Democrats will not admit that Race becomes an issue in a statewide or national election if one of the candidates is a minority. Otherwise how can you explain that in last 50 fifty years there have been 3 Black senators (Ed Brooks, Mosely Braun, and Obama) and no Hispanic (I think) even though 12% population of USA is Black and 14% is Hispanic. Democrats now have a choice, they can be politically correct, nominate Obama and lose in November or come up with someone other than Obama or Hillary (she can not win in November either). BTW I a minority who would rather have a White Democrat rather than McCain.

You might not realize this, but you’re working for the same news organization that put on the rigged debate last week. You don’t do yourself any favors when you neglect to dissociate yourself from what your fellow journalists have done. In fact, you should be arguing for Stephanopoulous’s removal. He makes you look bad, and anything you say from this point on is viewed through the lens of whether ABC is making a concerted effort to oppose Obama.
And just to address your post: A flat-out direct lie from the candidate (sniper fire) trumps choices about symbolism (flag pins) and tenuous guilt-by-association references. That’s just common sense.

Dear Mr. Jake Tapper,
Do you not realize that while you criticize Mr. Obama, you implicate yourself as you harp on attack and counter attack points that Obama himself was saying was manufactured distractions?
You are manufacturing more distracted talking points. Of course Obama has to counter attack and maintain two lines of discourses. One that is substantive and one that counterattacks any slander coming his way. Its a political game. To try to convince the reader that political strategy has to be consistent, static, and one dimensional reveals lack of knowledge of politics or underestimation of readers’ knowledge.

I got to this post via a Huffington Post link. I wouldn’t have done it on my own. I’ve known ABC Nerws was dishonestly shilling for the Right since the “Road to 9/11″ travesty, and haven’t watched them since. The PA “debate” just underlined that. Why does anybody bother with ABC News?? If you want to see their brand, just go to Fox News. I do that occasionally just to see what the Bush Administration is up to.

Mr. Tapper
You gave your bias away when you insisted that lapel flag pins are not a distraction.
Have you lost your mind? You consider lapel pins to be a substantive issue? A cheap bit of Chinese-made costume jewelry tells you something major about the character of a Presidential candidate?
You must be kidding. But no, you’re not. You’re just showing that you’ve replaced journalism with Clinton partisanship.
Have you no shame?

Obama is such a friggin’ crybaby. It’s easy to see how the Republicans will wipe the floor with him come November. It’s no surprise why Democrats lose election or whe their emblem is the jackass. After their deep slate of great candidates, if Obama is the best they end up with they deserve to lose. I’m already practicing saying, “Hello, President McCain.”

Repeatedly making bald faced lies about your experience, and in so doing belittling our soldiers who actually are under sniper fire on a daily basis (because of your vote in the senate), yeah that is roughly equivalent in relevancy to what somebody you’ve met did when you were 8 years old.
Makes sense to me … in bizzaro-world maybe!

Obama has the gift of gab and is a smooth talker but that is all he has.
He is using scare tactics about the economy to get attention. Has no concrete data to back up what he says. That alone undermines our economy and the security of the nation. He has no solutions to any problems. “Get out of Iraq” is not a solution by itself. If thats the best he can do then Obama needs to get off the ticket and voted out of his Senate seat also.
I would rather fight the enemy on their soil rather in our comunities. It is time he shows his true colors. I don’t believe they are RED, WHITE and BLUE.
Democrats have been “tax and spend” for as long as I can remember. Look at the tax tables during the Clinton years and compare them egainst the Busch years and you’le find in all catagories, the Busch years show lower tax rates, not only the “top 2.% ” which they say every election.
Overall this is the least qualified Presidential field since before the 1940′s. Remember, Congress has a lower rating than the President and they are all Senators.
The only one not, was Mit Romney and he had a possitive track record of accomplishments. Those left running have no accomplishments.

It’s like a baby that cries, not because it’s hurts, but because it wants others to think it hurts. This country is about the right of a person to get up and put forth an opinion that others might totally disagree with, and you have the right to protest it . If you had followed how Obama has worked to improve the living standards of the poor people in Chicago, including through his controversial church, I doubt you would be making such a blanket statement.
Obama has always drawn support from the ground up, and is slaughtering Clinton in fund-raising, because ordinary citizens support his ideas, not D.C.’s
Get with the program, and back our Democratic nominee.

These are the same people who sold our middle class out to multinationals. These are the same folk that send us to war based on falsehood. These are the people who let our military lose four thousand of our men and women. These are the same people who spend billions of our tax money so oil companies can remain in the middle east. We let ourselves be fooled repeatedly. Even now we are arguing over lapel pins and patriotism. God help us.

How his wife can allow it is the biggest outrage, I guess it’s okay to throw out these negative stereotypes if you think you’ll win…but she will not be a leader to the women of this country as First Lady because she has allowed her husband to use so many stereotypical images of women in negative attacks…he is sexist and she allows it to stand. They make me sick Their love of power is setting women back decades, because he treats women so dismissively it is becoming accepted by his followers and he sets the tone and style of attacks and his are particularily nasty toward women. I find him greedy and power hungry and he is slash-and-burning any chance at power his little girls might have had, women in politics has by his own standards no merit and should be ridiculed….this is unforgivable…..I hate Obama, I always will, he could save the whole damn world and I would hate him for his attitude toward Hillary and her supporters…every time he insults her he insults me…and I will never vote for him. Never.

Just a tad, disingenuous Mr. Tapper?
As I sit here, watching the candidates closely, waiting to cast a vote, I have to say I don’t think they are the same. I suspect like a lot of voters like myself who no longer trusts the media, look beyond the news to find the real story, or if there really is a story. (Thank heavens for the internet in this critical primary and election to come! We are no longer dependent upon media spin.)
It seems to me the big difference is that Sen. Clinton crafted a bald face lie to tell to voters and made it worse by trying to use another lie to cover it. She also lied about NAFTA, as her own papers from the White House show.
Although Obama’s ‘bitter’ comments were fair game and one he apologized for, look how Clinton chose to spin them? Even worse look at her sudden portrayal of herself as a deeply religious, duck hunter but her refusal to answer any questions about that claim to the media? Even worse, unlike other Presidents, who have reduced tax payer funded perks to former Presidents, the (non-elitist) Clinton’s still take it all plus the 109 million they made since leaving the White House.
Does direct dishonesty and hypocrisy on that scale matter? Is that a distraction or is that relevant to our choice and expectations about a candidate who ‘would be President?’
Do you really think in voters minds that blatant lying compares with the ‘guilt by association,’ attacks on Obama?
I would hope that most voters have a higher standard of ethics than that, certainly this one does!
ABC’s debate and its blatant use of guilt by association brought this to ahead for many of us.
ABC joined FOX and Clinton in being the most obvious and virulent in trying to smear Sen. Obama, using ‘guilt by association’, an old McCarthy tactic. That in itself speaks to me about her integrity and honesty in her attacks on a fellow democrat and makes me question ABC whom I once believed to be reasonably credible.
I just watched the Clooney movie about Edward Morrow, ‘Goodnight and Goodluck,’ so watching what she and others are doing to Sen. Obama really hit home for its similarity in tactics.
We forget that era and those tactics at our own peril. Those same tactics were used to great advantage to put Bush in office which is when I became an independent again.
Just like McCarthy’s guilt by association smear on innocent citizens, the same tactic being used on Obama is based on rumor, innuendo and paper thin attempts to link him to the thoughts, works and words of others.
I shudder to think what the same tactics used against Clinton, Bush or McCain might yield?
So when a person is smart enough or inclined to want to know the truth about Obama’s associations, what are they left to believe when they finally gets the facts? That what turns out to be little more than manufactured crap is somehow the same as Clinton’s bald faced lies?
I don’t think so.
The truth is that none of the ‘association’ smears on Obama holds up when you look at the facts and the context. Not one!
Clinton and the media’s attempt to connect Obama to Farrakan was the most blatant, disingenuous ‘guilt by association,’construction I have ever seen!
Obama was already on the record denouncing Farrakan ages ago. He had spoken out in African American churches trying to counter Farrakan’s dreadful comments about Jewish people. It was reported in the paper and shown on clips on You Tube.
But somehow the attempt is made to make Obama accountable for the fact that Farrakan praised him in a speech he gave that had nothing to do with Obama.
Never mind how unfair or unethical that is, what is the agenda or justification for that kind of questioning?
Then we get Rev. Wright, a controversy manufactured by taking 3 speeches he gave, taking them out of context of the sermon and running those selected sound bytes over and over again.
Two of the speeches were given outside of his church in other states, and one was given in his church when Obama was in Miami.
Is Wright contentious? Probably by some standards but he was neither racist nor anti-American nor did he ‘blame’ Americans for 9/11.
But where do you want to start the list when it comes to contentious or out right vicious comments by some associated with other candidates?
Look at the commentary from religious leaders associated with Reagan, Bush, McCain and even Hillary’s own controversial leader of the creepy right wing “fellowship” she belongs to?
Although the Wright thing caught my attention, when I actually investigated it, I came away with only 1 question, why was it manufactured and why was Obama singled out?
8,000 people in the Trinity Church, both black and white were tarred by this crafted controversy. They have suffered abuse and even threats ever since.
The Rezko thing was the same, more smoke and mirrors in the face of facts and circumstances, of course shaded with Rezko’s ethnic origin which happens to be Syrian.
Yet, there has never been a suggestion of wrong doing on Sen. Obama’s part by anyone. The truth is, Rezko, who contributed to many Democrats, was a highly respected member of the community until he was indicted. He had not been indicted when Obama was dealing with him or associated with him.
Individuals co-indicted with Rezko were also Democratic party and GOP fund raisers. Did they get even a mention? No.
What was spun was the possibility of ‘unanswered questions’in regard to the Rezko and Obama connection.
Yet when he met and showed documentation to the Chicago papers, those supposedly ‘unanswered questions’ were put to rest. Again it was smoke, mirrors and innuendo.
The Rezko issue failed, the Wright issue failed, the Farrakan non-issue failed, I think largely because of people like me who actually check, so now we have Ayers!
Ayers, is a white man charged but not convicted 40 yrs ago for his role with the Weatherman. Forty years later, he is now a respected professor, sought after expert on education and an anti-poverty activist in Chicago. The fact that Obama was 8 yrs. old when Ayers was active makes it even sillier. So what was Obama’s association?
He lives in Obama’s neighborhood, held a coffee party fundraiser for him the first time he ran for the Illinois legislature and he and Obama served on the board of a well respected charity organization that met 4 times a year.
He has nothing to do with Obama’s run for the presidency, he did not endorse him, he did not give him funds they are not close friends.
Thats it!
So we have one candidate who constructs bald face lies, dishonest pretenses and uses highly questionable tactics to tar a fellow democrat and you are asking us to believe that somehow that is the same as the tactics used against Obama that is constructed entirely by McCarthy ‘guilt by association’ tactics?
I don’t think so!
However, although Obama cannot say it, these tactics are not trivial to some of us. The record shows based on facts and numbers that Obama has been singled out for these kind of attacks. See the assessment by FAIR an independent, well respected and impartial online site who reports about fairness and accuracy in the media.
Its a real eye opener for those of us who think these kind of tactics are unethical.
Why was Obama singled out to answer for his ‘black’ preacher, the ‘black’ controversial Mr.Farrakan and the ‘Syrian’ Mr. Rezko?
Today in the Washington Post columnist David Ignatius found cover behind his flimsy, irrelevant article called “Loyal to a Fault’ to hit Obama again on everyone of those hot button, race based ‘guilt by association,’smears.
He linked him again to Farrakan by noting the connection with someone who was “related” to the former leader of the “Nation of Islam.” He made a point of pointing out Obama’s indirect association with someone who ‘knew’ and ‘worked’ with “Mohammaded Ali”, a Muslim of course. His raising of Rev. Wright was a given plus the fact he saw fit to point out that Rezko was a “Syrian” and some one said that Obama attended an event given by Rezko for a perfectly respectable, albeit “Iraqi-born” millionaire. Not surprisingly, Mr. Ayer who is white does not even get a mention. How ugly can this get?
What makes it even worse is that neither Obama nor anyone else can even address the legitimate questions behind his being singled out. He would instantly be accused of playing the victim or being guilty of reverse racism. That in itself is a pretty sad commentary about the state of race relations in our Nation when that kind of counter attack is used to shield highly questionable tactics that are used blatantly and frequently in singling out Obama.
As a consequence you would be hard pressed to convince this 60 yr. old white woman that it wasn’t because he was black! Because if it wasn’t because he was black, what was it?
Are these guilt by association questions distraction as Obama points out? Of course they are because they are manufactured, unlike Clinton’s Bosnia adventure that was a bald faced lie to mislead voters.
I am really quite sick of the whole thing. There is not a snowballs chance in hell of me voting for Clinton or McCain now, a man I had a lot of respect for until he joined the smear by association cadre.
So save your self serving constructions for someone else Mr. Tapper.

Don’t forget whatever Obama is he was raised by his white mother and white grandparents, not in the urban areas in which people tend to characterize blacks. By the way, “Why refer to him as black?” His environment would suggest otherwise, wo what’s the problem!

America, if we did our homework, and job as citizens, it wouldn’t matter who is president! That’s the real problem. We sit back on our chairs and play, “Who fits into my predispositions about concerning my philosophy on life?” I don’t “like” this person. Or I don’t “like” that person? Yeah, that guy, or girl will do the things that’s going to make “my” life better. And if it’d at the expense of others in the world, so what! Every elected president has some baggage going in. So what’s new?

JT, there is a big difference between a bald face proven LIE (one of many) and trumped up guilt by association.
If Sen. Obama sits back 100% of the time he will lose by default. If he comes back on a valid issue, you accuse him of being a hypocrite.
I don’t think you have displayed the true gift of a good journalist – objectivity. Don’t write junk just for the sake of writing, it diminishes you as much as your subject.

Posted by: kamldp | April 20, 2008, 5:17 pm 5:17 pm

Clinton used that story, blatantly, as a way to prove her “commander-in-chief” status. She LIED. That is a direct connection to the validity of her candidacy. She says she wants people to think of this election as a hiring…hiring someone for “the toughest job on earth.” Well, if YOU were hiring someone, and one of their major references turned out to be a blatant lie, would you still hire them?
I think Hillary screwed Hillary on this one. She said she had foreign policy experience, and used the Bosnia story to make herself look “tough” and “military.” And it might’ve worked, if she hadn’t MADE UP THE IMPORTANT PARTS. Now she has to accept the face that she put a giant hole in her credibility. We’ve already had eight years of a president who was a pathological liar. He even put on a flight suit and told us we’d won the war in Iraq. Do we want to “hire” another one of these? I know I don’t.

The Bosnia lies are not just ‘distraction’.
HRC told the story on several occasions, adding (false) details each time.
It cannot be a mistake. One may easily forget details of one’s life, but not
when one’s life has been at risk.
So either she deliberately lied, or she
really thought this had happened (and it turns out it has happened to another person).
If she lied deliberately, it raises not only an ethical question, but the question whether she’s completely stupid, as it was pretty obvious that the truth would surface.
If she did not lie deliberately, then it rases the question of her mental health.
If there’s a third option, I’m curious to hear about it.
We’re talking about who’s going to be the most powerful person in the world, in a position to initiate WW III.

Karen…I guess we think of Obama as black because he looks black. I guess the other reason would be because when anybody says something he can’t answer or he doesn’t like he claims it was a racist remark. Of course only if it was said by a white person. The third reason I would guess is that he goes to a church believing in BLACK THEOLOGY and all of his mentors are black he coundn’t bring himself to repudiate Wright. He had no problem throwing his WHITE grandmother under the bus however.

NEWS FLASH! Obama campaign internals show that he is ahead in PA. Undecideds have broken his way and the college/youth vote cannot be accounted for in polls because cell phones cannot be accessed. This is why he has been all smiles the last few days having fun and ready for his victory in a state that he has been down as much a 26 points the past few months.

The Obama campaign immediately disavowed, discredited, whatever, the comments made by that miliary person yesterday. As in immediately. Given that he was 8-years-old at the time, it’s safe to say that Obama was not involved with the Weathermen. Do some
Chicago research and you will find that the Ayers long since paid their price for the crimes from long ago and are considered upstanding members of the community. He teaches at the University, they live in the same general neighborhood and he hosted a fund raiser back in the 90s when Obama was running for State Senate. It’s not like they are buds. It seems to me that this relationship is in a whole different category from the Rev. Wright issues. Attacks on the basis of policy differences, however twisted they might be, are probably to be expected at this point. Attacks on character that are known to be false (marxist, muslim spy, patriotism or lack thereof), future talking point memos for the Republicans, I would consider at the very least cheap shots and “dirty politics” — the stuff the Clintons love so much. On the other hand, when Clinton gets up in public on numerous occasions and flat out lies, again and again, about her military creds and then makes jokes about it — I can see where that type of behavior might rub a real military man or woman the wrong way. Just saying….

I thought FCC deregulation had only resulted in the balkanization of cable. ABC’s conduct of the so-called debate proved otherwise. ABC has not credibility as a news or journalistic source. It is now a partisian player just like Fox. Therefore, it can be expected that Tapper will voice only opinions that are noncritical of his bosses at ABC. To equate a clear Hillary “lie” with Obama’s supposed “guilt by association” is not only a differnce in degree it is one in kind.
And lastly, if one needed any more proof of an ABC bias against Obama, the love fest that little George conducted with McCain on his Sunday show should remove all doubt.

A lie Clinton made to “prove” her foreign policy/security experience can in no way be compared to the pseudo-issues that were manufactured against Obama. Hillary has serious character flaws that she displays time and time again. Since Obama appears to be personally absent of these, he is attacked on issues pertaining to “guilt by association” and matters of jewelry. Lapel pins today, neckties tomorrow. Jake, I thought that you were smarter than this, but then I thought the same of Charlie and George.

The difference is, when it comes to the Bosnia thing, it’s part of a pattern by Hillary Clinton- she’s a liar. That’s her character. She’s a pathological liar. And she called it “misspeaking” because of a “lack of sleep”. Well, what’s she going to do when that red phone rings at 3 AM? I hope she doesn’t MISSPEAK!
Sadly, ABC News has proven time and time and time again that they are UNABLE to provide HONEST, UNBIASED reporting. I used to depend on ABC News, but now I see they are at the same level as FOX and CBS. I’m disgusted by it. Peter Jennings is probably rolling in his grave.

Hillary is the one who choose to use the Bosnia story to enhance her so-called foreign policy experience. She did that to herself and if she was making up unnecessary lies then their wouldn’t be anything to say. Obama has every right to bring up after all the attacks Hillary has thrown at him. Why should continue to be silent. He has tried hard to stay neutral on alot of her dirty laundry but she keeps trying to smear him all over place. I am glad he is calling her out on her lies it is about time.

If John McCain was on a board with a Nazi, or a Klansman, would he not be blasted for being there? I also remember when it was a big scandal if a politician was a member of a country club that had no black members. I think it only fair that we apply the same criterion to ourselves as we apply to others.
The problem I have with Obama’s being on the board with Ayers and taking his help is not that he was a Weatherman, but that he still thinks that what he did was great. He is in short, an unrepenetent terrorist, Stalinist, and elitist. At least Rev. Wright only threw verbal bombs, Ayers threw REAL ones. I can tell you that this will sink Obama in the general election and it will ensure a Pres. McCain. The only way it won’t is if the US goes into a Depression.

Nobody is asking the questions what skeletons Hillary still has in her closet? Peter Paul is huge. We all know Peter Paul is a huge story, so why does the media check it out? If Hillary gets the nomination, this story will break In October leaving her no time to recover. The New media has not done their job into looking in to Bills connection to Columbian trade. They also haven’t looked into where all the money came from that Hillary loaned herself? Bill seems to get millions for his library, where does that money come from, what are the connections? We all know if just one journalist would scratch the scab, it would bleed like crazy!!! They have their eyes on Obama and taking him down but I doubt he has half the skeletons in his closet than Obama.

4. Sitting on Walmart board of directors(illegal immigrants kept in warehouse)
5. Her working for communist law firm Treuhaft, Walker and Burnstein.
6. Her husband commuted sentences of weather underground convicts.
7. Husbands income from promoting Columbia trade agreements. $800,000.00
8. Backdoor talks with healthcare and drug companies while first lady.

Posted by: Star | April 20, 2008, 7:47 pm 7:47 pm

There is a big difference between running a positive campaign and hiring attack dogs….Obama has been negative from the start. He just claims he hasn’t. The most destructive line of attack to America is his constantly claiming everyone is a racist.
His policies are watered down versions of Hillary’s and Edwards. He represents a change in American values not in politics.
Ask yourself the hard questions…Why do the Black Panters, Farrakan and Hamas endorse Obama? Why is he so tolerant of racism and terrorism? Is he a saint? Is he a guy that makes great speeches? So far he has displayed a willingness to say or do anything to be elected.
Why did he lie about not only his handwriting on the policy survey but the fact that he had approved funding to try and remove the 2nd Amendment from gun owners?
Why did he lie so long about his relationship with Wright? Why did he put him on his campaign until Dec 2007 if he knew that Wright was blaming America for 911? How could he tolerate the racism spewed from the pulpit knowing that his children attended that church?
I do not believe he is a Moslem or a terrorist. Mr Obama is an opportunist and the worse kind of HYPOCRITE.
The truth is if he gets into office we will have no idea how he will deal with foreign policy. It could be scary. Samantha Powers has already let the cat out of the bag about Iraq…he may not keep his word about getting us out in 16 months.
It was Obama’s campaign that told Canada not to worry about him renegotiating NAFTA.
His conflicting statements about the economy seem to indicate that he understands it less than MCCain.
So all things being equal he has no relevant experience to be President and no record of accomplishment. This is the worse change that America could have.

There are way too many comments on what turned
out to be a lousy “debate”. It’s obvious that some
people like Senator Obama, and some like Mrs Clinton, but many more really dislike Mrs Clinton
than Senator Obama. There must be a reason for
that. The felony fraud case against both Clintons
starts in California in May, and there is a lot of tangible evidence. I don’t think that felons can hold
federal office.

Nevertheless Obama continues to lie about every relationship in his life. Remember when the press asked him if he had a representative that had met with Canada and he claimed it “didn’t happen”? His first instinct was to lie outrageously. The press has not called him on this stuff…until finally at the debate someone asked a few hard questions and the bottom falls out.

Yes both candidates are engaging in distractions. The implication is that they are equally guilty. Obama responds to attacks with attacks but does not initiate the volley. There is no incentive since his intended message is a positive one and he would be better off with no attacks.
What is really a distraction is when the news media obsesses on the distractions and becomes an advocate instead of a moderator.

One reader, CLH, writes today:
“when Clinton’s lies (they were not merely misrepresentations) about Bosnia emerged, I was pretty unimpressed by her casual dismissal of the matter. It shows a streak of cruelty and indifference about suffering, and about service, that should make us shudder.”
This is one of the most thoughtful comments I’ve read in months. Thank you, CLH, for writing it.

It is a very close race between Clinton and Obama. Women love Hillary. Women are voting for Hillary in droves. She may very well be our next President of the United States whether any of you like it or not. From what the media says, Obama has the wealthier people voting for him. All of them have computers. That’s why there is so much support for Obama on these sites. Comments on the web do not speak for everyone. Here is one person who’s going to vote for Hillary.

Posted by: dhu | April 20, 2008, 9:24 pm 9:24 pm

This is EXACTLY what happens every campaign season. Americans are so damn easily distracted by BS that they end up voting for some bozo like McCain our of revenge. Revenge against whom? – Yourselves. Then when we have another 8 years and trillions spent on war you will look back at these stupid distractions, parsed words and over-reaching associations and realize, although much to late, that WE have screwed up again.
It has bothered me so much that the American people are so naive about Politics. They are easily swayed by cultural issues that don’t put food on the table. Care about guns, god, abortion on your own time in your own family. But for heavens sake don’t let the GOP paint our candidates as unpatriotic for not wearing flap pins – how stupid is that.
WE have to do a better job of being more mature about these elections and stop acting like children. If you are looking for character flaws then look at Hillary – she has the highest negatives of anyone ever seeking the job of President. She and Sean Hannity know Obama is a good man so they hype this crap about his minister which is ridiculous. NOne of you can name Hillary’s pastor or for that matter, Bush’s pastor. We have separated Church and State for a reason and this is it
Wake up and apply some common sense and stop getting cut in to little pieces like “blue collar” workers, black, latte drinkers, etc. It’s condesending and stupid.

We seem to be living in the United States of Alice in Wonderland. Is’nt it ironical : W and Quayle avoided the draft and combat and fighting for their country by using political connections to get into the Guard. The “Reverend” Pat Robertson avoids combat duty by using Daddy’s influence to serve in a non-combat role. Cheney, Rove, DeLay, Limbaugh are the quintessential examples of conservative chicken hawks – support war as long as someone else does the fighting and dying.
And Pastor Wright……..volunteers for the military, does not accept any deferments, serves with honor and is then denigrated and vilified for daring to complain of the quasi-apartheid treatment he was subjected to.
Lewis Carroll would be proud!

The real problem with all the idiots running for President is they are all Senators. Have any of them ever really run anything, except for office? It almost appears as we have a “High School Click” fight going on instead of a Presidential Campaign.
Let’s get down to some real issues:
Are we going to build more refineries, and drill for more oil until we can develop alternative to our present fuel source? How will we give people incentives to develop real and affordable alternatives?
Are we willing to set up some kind of “Tax Breaks for Corporate America” to promote job growth, and keeping existing jobs here in the USA, maybe bring some of the off-shore jobs back?
Just how long do we stay in Iraq and Afghanistan, and how do we get all those folks to realize it’s better to join the rest of the World and quit killing each other (especially women for such phony reason as they embarrassed our family)?
Are we willing to do whatever it take to stop Iran from developing “The Bomb?”
How do we make Health Care affordable, and still give all people the choice and quality of care they expect?
What about all the Illegal Aliens in the USA, especially those suckling at the tits of the American Taxpayer?
Oops, there I go again, I could add a thousand more important questions to this list, but I won’t.
Just one last question for the voters. When are we actually going to elect people who will do the job as a whole for the people of this country, and not just worry about their own political future and egocentric little empires they build?

Posted by: Chase | April 20, 2008, 11:24 pm 11:24 pm

Hillary lied about Bosnia to build herself up. This was totally dis honoring ALL of the soldiers and people in this country from the time of the revolution that have either died or got wounded from sniper fire. She is putting herself in the same catagory as these “heros”.
Now if that was not enough she then goes on a late night comedy show and jokes “I would have been here earlier but I was pinned down by sniper fire in the parking lot”.
Joking about such a serious issue is even worse!!!
How can someone that wants to be the commander in chief and that will have to send soldier into sniper fire, blatantly joke about this!!!
I have not heard any news program talk about the seriousness of Hillarys Bosnia comments.
I have not heard anyone talk about how Pres. Kennedy who was one of the most famous democrats was killed by sniper fire!!!! His brother and Martin Luther King were also killed by sniper fire!!!
Hillary now jokes about such a serious topic and gets away with it. It was no joke to any family that lost a loved one to sniper fire.
I remember watching the Kennedy funeral on TV. If anyone had made any sniper fire joke they would have been run out of town back then!!!! .
Even Bill Clinton lied for Hillary in this issue and he is a former commander in chief. What a total discrace for a former pres. to do this.
The Bosnia lie and joke disqualifies Hillary for the office of commander in chief. Period!!!!

the comments about balanced budget by the Clintons. Remember they came into office in ’93, the Republican took back the congress and senate in ’95
Under the Republicans balanced the budget and after Bill saw that the country wanted this took claim for it. The Clintons did not balance the budget – - that is and other misspeak.
Now for Enron, that occurred because of accounting changes that Bill made – - over the objection of the SEC and FTC – in exchange for a large donation. – - -
These same accounting changes caused major ripples in the stock market – - as accounting rules were changed back. – - this took place under the Clintons. of course the effect shows up years later – - under Bush and he gets blamed for it.
The Clintons turned down Bin Laden when he was offered to them – - – more than once – - – allowing for 9/11 to happen. That effected the economy and airline industry – not to mention the travel
If you look at all of this you will realize that Bush had more major problems hit his administration – than any other – - -
and of course the Clintons and others want to get back and Bush and the republicans for all of the exposing of scandals – - – and they have been looking and looking and trying somehow to find one – - any little thing – -
all to make the Clinton years look better in comparison – -
note in 2007 with the Democrats in control of Congress and the Senate – over 100 Congressional investigations have been started into the Bush administration – - – in one year not a single of of these investigations have found anything – - over 1 million pages of documents have been sent to congress in response – - -
and Congress wonders why the people are wondering what they are doing – - -
after all of this, I am for Obama – -
Hillary will just keep the fighting going on – - called getting even for what the republicans did to her – - and scandals and deals will simply continue – - and more scandals and things will come to light
McCain – - it will simply be more of the same – - – same Democrats and republicans going at it – - – for 4 more years – - – attacking and nothing happening – - – -
Obama presents the chance to heal and move forward – - to stop the fighting – - and start a process of I do not care who’s idea it is – - if it is a good one – lets take a look at it – - no more other’s sides must be bad – - – -

If Hillary goes on to win this nomination, there are so many Obama supporters that have promised to go out of their way to enable her loose. They r planning on volunteering for Mccain.
Come to think of it, Mccain is more credible than Clinton and he has a conscience which Clinton does not have.
Why on earth should people vote for somebody with zero credibility and zero conscience.
I neva thought there could be a mother w/o a conscience.

please. Hillary’s fight and her ability to sustain a fight that is rightly hers is nothing – nothing – short of astounding.
the White House needs a fighter. Not a whiner.
VOTE HILLARY, PENN.

Which candidate has displayed no conscience in this nomination process?
Can u believe in someone with zero credibility and zero conscience?
Can u let somebody who exhibits desperation run your life?
Make a clear and rational choice between all 3 available nominees now! Remember u don’t get another choice for 4 years.

Caroline,
Yes the White House needs a fighter. It needs an HONEST fighter!!
Think about it….would you feel comfortable sending your son or daughter into battle under Hillarys command??? This is a person that joked about sniper fire. This is a person that would be sending people into battle and does not think that sniper fire is a very serious matter and destroys lives and families.
Obama is finished too. His bagage and blatant lies are overwhelming.
Only choice this time is McCain. He is a true hero and not a made up one like Hillary. I am sure that you would feel a lot more comfortable sending your child into battle under his command.

Can someone clarify? When Obama said at the debate Ayers is not someone he consulted with for advice on a regular basis (sounds like legaleese); Does that mean he consulted on a semi-regular basis, only 10 times or what. He did not say he never took his advice. Just asking

It’s this simple:
Hillary Clinton:Politics as usual
Johm McCain: Business as uasual
Barack Obama: Change we can believe in
It’s that simple

Obama served on a board with Ayers.
Did u ask urself what kind of board it is.
This is a charity organization where he did not earn money from the board.
These Clinton guys are ridiculous.
I serve on the board of a charity organization and I do not even know the fellow board members in name.
The guy who started it just wanted me on the board so i can help with some of the major decisions.

Is Obama suppose to just let Hillary Clinton keep poundidng him over and over again and not respond? Cmon, he could really go after her but he has over and over again. There is so much to go after, why do you think mcCain is trying to help Hillary? They are salivating at the GOP to get at her. I think the media is irresponsible not covering the Clinton fraud trial coming up on April 25,
Why didnt George Stephanopoulas and Charlie ask about that and the Columbia story, and the fact that she lied about supporting NAFTA until she started running for POTUS? There should be an investigation by congress into the media’s hands in all of this.

All politics aside on this one… One thing we can all agree on is that HILLARY SHOULD APOLOGIZE TO ALL COMBAT VETERANS… Nothing less to be asked of for her false claims trivializing the sacrifices of those of us who truly have been under fire…

How about Martin Luther Kings family??
IMO there is no apoligy for this.
Hillary has shown her uncaring and lying side big time??
There is NOTHING that she can say or do to turn this around. Like some posters have said, the evidence is there in the video. This was not a spin by the pther side. Facts are facts. She is finished and it is her own fault.

Guilt by association is a distraction. It’s petty and silly.
LYING on the other hand – and I’m not talking about the typical Political fibs and embellishments – but OUTRIGHT, IN YOUR FACE, LYING. That’s a topic that should be BLOWN UP ad nauseum until undecideds out there GET IT.
She will do or say anything to get elected. Lying about sniper fire? So you sound TOUGH? Come on.
Where have we read this story before? Oh, yeah… there’s weapons of mass destruction out there – watch out for the nuclear mushroom cloud. Do we need another 4 years of a LIAR IN CHIEF?

It is NOT trivial for a pres candidate to totally dis-regard his TRUE race in order to gain votes. It is NOT trivial for a pres candidate to make jokes about serious issues. The dems have 2 candidates that are not electable.

Seeing BO walking down the street, yes he looks like a black man. The point is that he is also a white man. The point is that if he called himself a white man you would have every black organization come down on him for dissing his black race.
You do not see this from any white organization. He refers to himself as a black man in order to gain the black vote. I have known many mixed race people and they do not call themselves black or white since they are neither.

Posted by: Danny Doris | April 21, 2008, 2:07 am 2:07 am

Yes there is a difference. Clinton made the statement that she had to duck to avoid sniper fire. Obama made a statement that people are bitter and turn to things they feel they can count on. One statement was a lie and one was the truth.

Hi -
While I agree that I’m sick and tired to Hillary’s Bosnia Story, and would be very happy with Obama if he were to drop it, I have to say that the Bosnia story and the Wright/ Ayers association are not quite in the same ballpark.
I mean, with the Bosnia thing, Hillary told a lie… repeatedly… like, 3 times or something. It wasn’t a slip of the tongue late at night after a long day, as Bill said it was. She told the same lie over and over.
That speaks to her character. Not her pastor’s character, or some guy’s character with whom she served on a board… HERS.

Posted by: kristen in montreal | April 21, 2008, 2:12 am 2:12 am

Danny, I’ll give you that. I even agree, but the way I see it. The media dubbed him the 1st viable black Pres candidate. An I see him tout his white heritage more than his black, what about you?? See if you have 1 drop of black blood in you, you are perceived as black. I just don’t think it really matters.

Well, here we go again. I knew a Democrat once, in fact I was a Democrat once, and I can tell you these two (Obama and Hillary) are no Democrats.
Sounds like the whole mess is boiling down to race and gender, or a beauty contest.
Are these the best the Democrats have to offer? God save us all if it is!
I say dump both these immature “School Kids!” Recruit Joe Lieberman, Bill Bradley, Harold Ford, or at least some one more moderate, honest, and respectable with the true interest of us all in mind, instead of their own political self-interest.
I just can’t believe Hillary is the best womankind has to offer.
I just can’t see how Obama is ready for the World Stage, although I will admit he one of the most dynamic speakers I have seen in politics in quite some time.
But come on Democrats, bring somebody forward that can lead, or at least won’t get in the way.

oracle, I could care less who defends him. i am voicing my opinion–which is similar to many americans.the church is built on racist ideals. criticizing america and whites from the pulpit, last i heard, good “god fearing folks did not take the lord’s name in vain”, i would think this really applied in a church.
being in the marines exonerates him for nothing he does today.
i do not care who criticizes what. what is at issue here is a presidential candidate, who syas he is a uniter, being a member of a church with such a foundation.

Posted by: pp | April 21, 2008, 2:19 am 2:19 am

Oracle,
I feel that the press has totally forgotten his white side. He is half an afro american and half a white american.
IMO everyone should just call themselves americans!!
My whole point is that he exploited his black side for the black vote and no one has really complained about him calling himself an afro-american. Point is that if it were the opposite there would be a huge outrage and he would lose the black vote big time. Seems that his dissing of his white side has not lost him white votes. Even when he threw his white grandmother under the bus and praised his anti american black pastor there still was no outrage from the white community.

Posted by: Danny Doris | April 21, 2008, 2:24 am 2:24 am

you are right, Chase. the party has been a huge disappointment to me since 2006 when they came in to power in congress only to squander the opportunity. i do not think the party has any real leaders any more, and this primary has probably split the party for good. perhaps this division is a reflection of changing values and beliefs within the party. i do not know. i do know that after being a loyal democrat for36 years, i am ready to leave the party i loved.

It just seems funny to me that you don’t know Wright but you try to brand him. I give you the clip of a man who is good friends with Wright and respected in the white church community, but you say I don’t care what his opinion is. Why don’t you listen to his “whole” speech instead of the 10 sec clips that fox edited for people just like you. I guess that’d be 2 much like real research…

Please show us the facts that proves that the US government injected black americans with the aids virus?
These were words straight out of Wrights mouth. He told his church that this was a fact in one of those 10 sec videos. How do you explain his aids statement?? Show us proof that what eh said was true?

Posted by: Danny Doris | April 21, 2008, 2:33 am 2:33 am

Well danny, i agree with what you said about the media forgetting. But is that BO’s fault?? I also, agree that we should all be called Americans. But I don’t think he “dissed” his white side for our votes. Remember he was not fully supported by AA’s until around the South Carolina primary. An even tho i don’t personally think that what Bill said was racist, certain comments lead to HRC losing the AA vote. As for him throwing his GMA under the bus, how?? Because he told the truth about her?? She obviously had no problem, so why should we??

Posted by: The Oracle | April 21, 2008, 2:34 am 2:34 am

I never said that everything he said is true. But be honest, you don’t think some of our policies have led to all time highs in anti-Americanism?? The fact we stick our nose into other peoples affairs all the time when its in our best interest, then turn around and say it’s because of our “values” or “moral authority”. I’ll say this much, what he said bout AIDS is probably not true. But before you go and totally dismiss this as the raving of a madman, go and check your country’s history. It is “FACT” that we injected AA’s with syphylis in the 1940′s I believe. It was called “The Tuskegee Experiment”. So is it totally crazy to think it can happen????

Posted by: The Oracle | April 21, 2008, 2:40 am 2:40 am

pp, thanks for the comments. It is sad to see what was once a proud party that stood for the ideals of America tear itself apart. Maybe it’s time to start the Moderate Party, where those of us that are a little to the left, or a little to the right can find a home. Some place a true discussion with acceptable compromises can be found. I know in my heart there are good people from both sides of the aisle that would like to see this happen.

Posted by: Chase | April 21, 2008, 2:41 am 2:41 am

Oracle,
Yes BO told the truth about his white grandmother and basically called her a racist. She was afraid when she saw a black man on the other side of the street and that she also used racial slurs. This is what BO said. He did not call his pastor a racist when it is so obvious that he is. He used Whites church to climb the political ladder. Id he dis-owns Wright now it will kill the black vote for him.

Posted by: Danny Doris | April 21, 2008, 2:41 am 2:41 am

danny doris
have you heard of (or like myself .. i was taught in college) the tuskeegee experiment? 400 black men in alabama INJECTED with the syph?
that might give you some kind of where crap like the govt injecting the black community with aids.
we have a very nasty and repulsive history when it comes to black americans. my god man… white folks used to own them as property!

Posted by: drzoon | April 21, 2008, 2:41 am 2:41 am

Oracle,
Just because the govt did experiments in the 40′s does NOT justify Writes outright lies about aids.
There were lots of things that happenned in the 40′s to AA’s and others.
There is NO excuse for (of all people) a pastor to spread anti american, anti white lies such as his aids lie. Think about it. All of his church members that heard these comments believe them to be true. After all he is a pastor…….
He is spreading hatred towards this country and towards white people. His words CLEARLY show this. There is no way to spin this into anything else than what it is.

Posted by: Danny Doris | April 21, 2008, 2:50 am 2:50 am

zrzoon,
Where is the proof?????
If someone is going to make a bold statement such as Wrights then there better be proof to back it up.
Just because things happenned in the govt the past does not make acusations against the govt today to be true.

Posted by: Danny Doris | April 21, 2008, 2:54 am 2:54 am

Well for 1 Danny, BO did not call her a racist. You just did, an he didn’t have to call Wright a racist Fox news and you did already. So can you find 1 racial slur that Wright used?? An I think you missed the big pic, what happened in that speech is why i support him. Whether you like it or not, he is in the middle. He was raised as a white man, but lived as a black. Who better to bring the country together?? He can see from both sides.

Posted by: The Oracle | April 21, 2008, 2:54 am 2:54 am

So why do white people go to his church?? See whats funny is he really said nothing diff than MLK. But White Americans revere MLK.

Posted by: The Oracle | April 21, 2008, 2:58 am 2:58 am

Oracle,
BO said that his grandmother used racial slurs that made him “cring”.
I would say that if you use racial slurs then you are a racist.
Wrights videos were so anti white and anti american. The words are there and from his mouth.
I also liked BO when he first started running however after the past months I have seen his far left side and the people that he has associated with. His judgement is very poor. He knew about Wright. How could anyone with good judgement not take care of this issue right at the start. He had to know that sooner or later he would have issues with this guy. Total lack of judgement. He has told lie after lie trying to explain Wright. IMO BO would be very dangerous for this country as commander in chief especially with the issues of the world today. HE is a very slick talker. That’s all.

Posted by: Danny Doris | April 21, 2008, 3:04 am 3:04 am

An for the record Danny, The Tuskegee Experiment wasn’t public umtil almost 30 yrs after it happened. Just playing Devil’s Advocate for ya.

Posted by: The Oracle | April 21, 2008, 3:04 am 3:04 am

How come the discussion never goes back to Africa when Blacks used to own Blacks and then trade or sold their slaves to other than Africans, such as, explorers, and adventurers?
This is not to make light of all the tragic and disgusting things that all men have perpetrated on each other.
At least in the US we have tried to correct these events (not as fast as they should have been, and not completely to the satisfaction of everyone).
I look back where my grandparents came from, it still has serious suppression of its masses today. They didn’t have it easy being here, but they made the best of what they could, my parents did better, and I am trying to make my way the best I can. I feel I have opportunity, and most off all freedom. I am aware of the past, but don’t choose to dwell on it or use it as an excuse for my short comings.

Posted by: Chase | April 21, 2008, 3:09 am 3:09 am

Oracle,
I am well aware of the Tuskegee Experiment. That also was a totally different time in America and how the blacks were treated back then. Much has changed since then.
The Tuskegee Experiment is no excuse for such a bold statement that was designed to turn his congregation against the US and whites.

Posted by: Danny Doris | April 21, 2008, 3:09 am 3:09 am

Well danny, you have the right to your opinions. But you said something perfectly:BO said that his grandmother used racial slurs that made him “cring”.
“I” would say that if you use racial slurs then you are a racist. So you’re tellin me that “you” would call her a racist. Once again, he didn’t say that. I live in a multi ethnic area, blacks, whites, jews, hispanics, etc. An I would actually disagree with you, I’ve heard people say things but knew they weren’t racist. I’ve got white friends who have told me, “I like black guys and have no problem with them, but I wouldn’t want one dating my daughter.” Now I can respect that, and I don’t even think it’s racist. Now switching gears, what about McCain and the Keating five, him finishing like 894 out of like 899 in the naval academy. What about him glazing over his wife stealing prescription meds??

Posted by: The Oracle | April 21, 2008, 3:12 am 3:12 am

Chase, i’ve had this discussion before, and I’m gld you brought it up. For one, the slavery of that place like that of the Romans was a diff slavery than that over here. For example, some became slaves to pay off debts. Some were indentured servants. The biggest diff was that people were slaves cuz they were conquered. Alot of times they even became family. Alot diff from the dehumanizing, and torture that went on here. Families being broken up and the such, ya know??

Posted by: The Oracle | April 21, 2008, 3:18 am 3:18 am

An i doubt Wright is dwelling in the past. But I’d bet both of our salaries his life has been harder then ours. So lets not judge till we walk in a mans shoes. Good enough??

Posted by: The Oracle | April 21, 2008, 3:21 am 3:21 am

Well Danny, Chase, pp, my fellow Obama supprorters. It’s been real, I had fun, hope ya’ll did too. I’ve got a flight in the morning so hope we can do this again. Everyone be safe…..

Posted by: The Oracle | April 21, 2008, 3:25 am 3:25 am

I’ll leave you with this Danny. I started this discussion with you cuz of the posts you had on the dems. when I talk about McCain’s past those are some reasons I wouldn’t vote for him, aside from things like Bush tax cuts, voting against MLK holiday, Iraq war, him knowing nothing about economy, etc. I could go on and on. But I never hear people attacking BO’s policies, it’s always the BS. I’m just tired of people bringing up his baggage w/o bringing up their respective candidates baggage. But for the record I don’t think McCain’s a bad guy.

Posted by: The Oracle | April 21, 2008, 3:30 am 3:30 am

Oracle, all you say is true. Let’s not forget the Tribal wars and capturing of enemies turned in to slave, along with separation of families, torture, and death. It didn’t only happen here. Many slaves were treated adequately by their owners (I refuse to use the word well, because how can you be treated well if you are not free and owned by some one), but as in most cases studying or reading about good humanitarians of the time would not be very interesting.
We still see a lot of the same things today in many of the Arab Countries, and in China.
It never ceases to amaze me what one man can do to another.

Posted by: Chase | April 21, 2008, 3:34 am 3:34 am

Yes Wright is not dwelling in the past. He will soon be dwelling in a 10 million dollar house in one of the rich white neighborhoods. His neighbors will be the same white people that he preached who are controlling the blacks!!!
I am sure that in his generation he had to endure many things. Hey other ethinic people had to endure a lot too. During his lifetime he saw huge racial changes for the good. This is what he should be preaching and not preaching like it was still the 1920′s.
BO listened to this BS for 20 yrs. This says a lot about his character. I believe that 1. he used this church to advance his political future and 2. He may believe in what Wright preaches.
Wright has really damaged BO chance for the presidency. He will be the nominee and lose the general. I cannot believe that this is the best that the Dems had to offer. You would think that BO past would have been totally checked out by them at the start. Now they are stuck with a losing candidate.

Posted by: Danny Doris | April 21, 2008, 3:35 am 3:35 am

Talking about Rev. Wright and Obama’s grandmother, I thought it ironic that Barak would explain that where the Rev. made questionable statements so did his grandmother. He took the time to justify the Revs comments but never offered any explaination for his grandmother. Kind of tells which he is more willing to defend.
And his comments about how could Hillary honor the Tomb of the Unknown. I suppose he could lay a pair of tennis shoes instead of a wreath. He certainly plans on running from the war instead of winning.

ORACLE:
The people involved in the experiment were people who had ALREADY contracted syphillis.. They were in the last stages of the disease, and the it was a study of the effects of syphillis on the body.
The sad part was that no one was going to cure them…. not that the “experimenters” had injected them with the disease.
Please read:
“The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment
by Borgna Brunner
For forty years between 1932 and 1972, the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) conducted an experiment on 399 black men in the late stages of syphilis. These men, for the most part illiterate sharecroppers from one of the poorest counties in Alabama, were never told what disease they were suffering from or of its seriousness. Informed that they were being treated for “bad blood,” their doctors had no intention of curing them of syphilis at all.
The data for the experiment was to be collected from autopsies of the men, and they were thus deliberately left to degenerate under the ravages of tertiary syphilis—which can include tumors, heart disease, paralysis, blindness, insanity, and death. ‘

I think it is fair to critically examine the behavior and character of the candidate. However I draw the line at holding the candidate accountable for the behavior or character of someone they happen to know. There is a distinct difference and when we cross that line and scrutinize the behavior of their pastor or neighbor, then we are just looking for excuses to smear someone.

Some people have said that we should all be called Americans. I agree I don’t see why it’s so important to always point out the person race or color. Only Americans can vote for president. Oh by the way, I have been wondering why no one is talking about the fact Bill and Hillary Clinton have a fraud case against them, and they have a court date this week ? You all know that if this was BO it would be all over the net and the Clintons calling for him to step down.

OMG, the Oracle is trying to make the Tuskegee Experiment sound like it was OK. First of all, how were the men in “the last stages” for forty years. But this is the evil part: They didn’t tell them what they had, and because they didn’t know THEIR FAMILIES CONTRACTED SYPHILLIS. Many, many people suffered for a very long time over that “experiment”. Perhaps the Oracle wouldn’t mind if his government did it to his family?

Doug,
I agree that association with a neighbor is a questionable link. A pastor, however, that was the spiritual light that brought Barak to Christianity. So pursuaded him that he not only stayed with him for 20 years but was married by the Reverand and thought him educational enough to bring their two children to the church. When Barak defends the Reverand and refers to him as practically a member of the family then this has transgressed beyond a passing acquaintance.
When the heat was applied Barak danced from:
I understand why the Rev. would say these things if he said them because I was not there. I can’t disown him.
to:
I might have heard some talk of the Rev. saying things like this.
to:
Okay, I was there for some of it but I don’t agree with everything he said.
to:
If he had not retired I would have left the church.
What a politician!! Note that his grandmother was just a typical white person but he gives an entire speach on why we should not judge Rev. Wright.
This year will be a “hold my nose and vote” year and it will not be for either Dem.

mary,
you made the point you agreed we should all be called americans, wondering why we always point out a persons race or color.
what in the world do you think the black population does everyday by calling themselves “african-americans”. you do not have to point it out, they do it for you…as their choice.

Posted by: pp | April 21, 2008, 4:46 am 4:46 am

Rev. Wright doesn’t even come close to the racism that Hillary Clinton grew up around. Her father’s favorite word for African Americans was the N-word. Now I know a little something about child development. When you grow up in a racist home, under stress you tend to revert back to those attitudes. The Hillary campaign reflects her racist roots. Obama joined Rev Wright’s church when he was an adult. And let’s face it, any biracial man who is part black just doesn’t run for the highest office in the land and hold some of the beliefs that Rev. Wright holds. It’s a contradiction. I mean people use your common sense. If he believed that America was populated by racists, he wouldn’t run. Duh!!
If you don’t want to vote for Sen. Obama, fine don’t. But please don’t use really ridiculous arguments to rationalize your voting against him.

duh, he is a racist in america, so of course he ran.

the reality is they all lie when it suits them. this year we really have no outstanding candidates for either party.

Posted by: pp | April 21, 2008, 5:31 am 5:31 am

Frankly, if he doesn’t fight back he is a wimp. If he does he is going negative.
If Obama was really going negative he would bring up the numerous scandals while Bill was in the white house, and ask people if they want to live through that again. Remind us all of whitewater, Monica gate, etc. No, what you call Obama going negative is him reminding us of a LIE that Hillary told in the previous 4 weeks on this campaign trail.
All you have had to do to win an election in America is hint… terrorists, muslim, etc and people get SOOO scared they vote REpublican, because we all KNOW the Republicans are going to save us.
IF Obama was involved in corruption or himself spoke hate rhetoric, I would want to know about it. But frankly I don’t care if he served on a charity board with Ayers or Ayers gave $200 once to his Senate campaign. There must be millions of people who have given money to Obama this time around. What a load of nonsense.
And as for McCain – ‘ol straight express needs to release his full tax returns and not hide behind his wife, AND his health records.

Obama might want to be careful about his use of the word “China”. Everyone knows that China is synonymous with Crap, and that using China in that context is offensive to Communist Red China. We must be more sensitive to the people of Communist Red China. We need Communist Red China if we are going to survive as a nation. Obama must understand this if he is going to be President. Even George Bush understands this. GO CHINA!

Posted by: Roger That | April 21, 2008, 6:59 am 6:59 am

This is more fun than a barrel of monkeys-to watch…wish this garbage would never end; that way good well-meaning democrats would get continual flow about what the enemies of this nation are truely all about.

Posted by: claspur | April 21, 2008, 7:37 am 7:37 am

Threw the China? You mean she threw a bunch of lead-painted, low quality crap made by a society enslaved by its government at him? Now THAT’s rough.
It’s just more proof that Hillary will do, say, or be anything to win. It’s 90s-style politicking and mudslinging at its best, and if Obama fights back the media decries negative campaigning. What the media and Hillary fail to realize is that Americans have moved past the Jerry Springer-style politics and want cooperation. There is no red and blue, us-and-them anymore-it’s who’s going to get the job done?
Oh, and by the way-ABC? Next time, if you host a political debate, you may not want to have a member of Clinton’s former cabinet as one of your panel. “I know you’re not comfortable with this, Senator Clinton, so we’ll move on”
OH PLEASE!

Posted by: Todd | April 21, 2008, 7:39 am 7:39 am

Obama has been a hypocrite from the start. He has just used the media to do his dirty work. He attacks in conference calls and memos and then goes out and says that he is above that kind of politics. Hillary had to do it out in the open because the media wouldn’t pick up her attacks like they did Obama’s. That is why we always thought there was a media bias. Now that the shine has come off of Obama, the media is finally seeing that. Kinda. LOL

Hillary has nothing but lies to through.

Posted by: cwm | April 21, 2008, 8:07 am 8:07 am

If you really look at the facts and the baggage of the 3 candidates then McCain wins hands down.
Hillarys Bosnia lie and then joke on Leno totally eliminates her to be commander in chief. No way out of this one. She has dis-honored thousands of people that have been killed by sniper fire. She could NEVER expect any service person to respect her.
Obamas pastor and shady friends etc. eliminates him.
McCain is lucky that in an election year when a dem has a good chance of winning, they put up 2 outright losers in this race.
If this is the best that the Dems have then that party is in deep trouble.
By the time all of this ends and Obama is the nominee their party will have split down the middle.
Thank you Hillary!!

To me, all of these claims of unfair treatment and biased reporting are what the republican party has endured for the last 30 years, the constant PR campaign for the Democrates and they are only even with the republicans now tells me that our country simply does not follow the democrate line of thinking, PERIOD. A more moderate social policy and a more conservative fiscal policy is what Americans really want, and for once we have a candidate who is exactly that, John McCain.

Obama was paid $6,000 per year for serving on the Woods Fund board; it was not an unpaid position as was stated earlier here. Through that board, Obama and Ayers granted $75,000 to anti-Semite Rashid Khalidi.

Why is it every woman in America has to be labeled with some negative tag? At the beginning of this campaign, she was to soft. Next, she was a b***h. Later she was untrustworthy and now she is a lier. The labels kept coming until one stuck.
Hillary has been doomed to fail since the 1990′s. She has taken more hits for Bill’s actions than Bill has.
Obama is and has ran a negative campaign since New Hampshire and no one seems to care. If Hillary fights back then it is all over every news media from one exploited incident to the next.
All politicians lie. For example, Obama cannot change domestic policy even though he continues to tell people that he is going to change Washington. As president, his job will be to set foregin policy. Obama says that he does not take money from lobbist but he does take money from ex-lobbist who have joined his campaign. A lobbist by any other name is still a lobbist, they still raise money from corporate contributors.

Posted by: shell-ii | April 21, 2008, 9:01 am 9:01 am

The bare truth of the matter is that Hillary IS untrustworthy and IS a BIG LIAR and so is Bill. This is not spin or a “label”. These are FACTS that are from her/his own spoken words and her/his own actions.
Yes I agree that all politicians lie. There are lies however that damage beyond repair. Bosnia is one of them.
Being pres and lying under oath is another. It is really bizarre that the Clintons are even at this point given their past history.

Posted by: dd | April 21, 2008, 9:18 am 9:18 am

campaign organized a conference call?
who in obama’s campaign?
who was the conference call to?
cause the only facts in this story tell me it was a group that supports obama speaking out. not obama.
the way i see it hillary should be talking about substance, not attacks. true, obama is talking about attacks in a hibrow manner, but – he aint the one doing the attacking. the difference is important to me.

Posted by: josh | April 21, 2008, 9:29 am 9:29 am

Now Obama is showing sexism, would you use the analogy if Hilary was a male, I do not think so!
Obama is throwing more dirty politics then any in history!!
He is a deceitful lying individual that meets with terrorists!

“Is Clinton’s Bosnia-sniper-fire story not a “distraction,” while Rezko, Wright, Ayers, Bitter-gate, and the flag pin are “distractions”?”
Well… yes. Clinton’s story was a blatant lie uttered by herself on multiple occasions. Rezko, Wright, Ayers are all ‘guilt-by-association’ efforts, the ‘bitter-gate’ incident was one badly-phrased remark which regardless had a large element of truth to it, and the flag pin? Are you kidding me?

Posted by: Aengil | April 21, 2008, 10:03 am 10:03 am

I think Obama is going through some kind of mid-life crisis. He’s pretty immature for a 47 year old man.
Guess he has to appear cool to keep the young voters.
I’ll take experience, depth, patriotism any day.
Go Hillary…or McCain if Obama wins the nomination.

Posted by: cindy | April 21, 2008, 12:16 pm 12:16 pm

Rev Wright is not running for President, there is a trial on for Retzco,If Obama is implicated in anything illegal,it will come to light and he will have to pay.
Comments in San Francisco are exactly that, one can either accept Obama’s explanation or not. What he said cannot be said to be immoral even if one accepts his explanation or not.
For Mr Tapper to not see the giant character flaw in someone who would continously give speeches in which a blatant LIE is repeated to make that someone look more heroic, shows Mr Tapper lack of objectivity and now blatant bias against Sen Obama, By the way which he has exhibited against Sen Obama numerous times before.Maybe he was slighted by Sen Obama before or maybe after watching the last debate,ABC has made it an unofficial policy to keep the democratic primary going for business reasons or they are simply in the tank for Sen Clinton.

Posted by: surfer | April 21, 2008, 1:01 pm 1:01 pm

surfer,
Read the article above by Tapper again. He is NOT siding with Clinton. He is pointing out the serious nature of her Bosnia lie and her then joking about it.

Jeanie, you wrote: “If he (Sen. Obama) believed that America was populated by racists, he wouldn’t run. Duh!!”
There is so much wrong with that statement. First of all, Sen. Obama is well aware of the White Supremists groups who live in America. So it isn’t a case of believing, he knows, they are out there. He also knows, not just believes, that there are African-Americans who deeply believe in Black Liberation Theology. So Sen. Obama KNOWS that America IS populated by racists. They may not be in the majority, but they are out there none the less. And he IS still running for the office of President of the United States.
Now then, I don’t know whether Sen. Obama, personally, believes in Black Liberation Theology or not. But I find it very difficult to accept that a person who has been surrounded by Black Liberation theologists for nearly all of his adult life, can be totally oblivious to the tenants of the movement. It’s nothing like the case that you point out regarding Sen. Clinton (if true). She didn’t have a choice. Her father was her father. But in Sen. Obama’s case he CHOSE to surround himself with individuals who believe, support and actively promote Black Liberation Theology.
People have a right to believe the way they want to. However if someone is running for the office of President of the United States, the electorate has a right to know whether a candidate is a White Supremist or a believer in Black Liberation Theology.

Give me a break, Tapper. It wasn’t a ‘gaffe’, it was a damn lie and her subsequent joke about it on late night tv was an insult to military personnel both living and dead.

Posted by: noahsmom823 | April 21, 2008, 3:01 pm 3:01 pm

It’s not only insulting to the military but also to civilians that have been hurt or killed by sniper fire. MLK for one and all the innocent people caught in the crossfire of inner city gangs etc. If ANY military officer ever lied and then joked about sniper fire they would be discharged immediatly. The commander in chief should be held to an even higher standard. Hillary has disqualified herself for being pres. I believe that she should be kicked out of the senate for her lie and joke about it. Ask the families that lost loved ones to sniper fire. They must be furious with Hillary. On MLK’s anniversary Hillary was all teary eyed. Now a couple of weeks later she is joking about the very thing that killed him!! Ask Ted Kennedy what he went through after his brothers were killed by snipers.

Misogyny is his campaign. That’s not the china that is breaking, that’s the Obama curtain coming down in a real campaign with real voting, not the keg parties. That’t the money flowing out wasted on meaningless ads that say what he says… nothing.
Wait I hear the millions of women slamming the doors of their homes as they head to the polls with a car load of their girlfriends, they’re voting for Hillary.
Millions of smart men listened in and they are setting a great example by taking their daughters to the polls so they can see their dad voting for Hillary.
Another major state, PA, goes for Hillary.
NC early voting picking up and the drum beat is Hillary! Hillary!
Indiana will go with Hillary!
Whine and rhyme now.

Ou Tai:
I agree with you. Also, it should be noted the Hillary served on the board of Wal-Mart where her main function was the do all she can to suppress any efforts by the employee to establish a union. She succeeded: there is no union at Wal-Mart even today.

Yeah, he’s from Chicago alright. Gutter politics. I don’t think the retired general realized that the ONLY reason Obama put the flag pin on that day was to get the veterans to vote for him. Soldiers are dying in Vietnam at the same time Obama’s Weather Underground friends are killing people in the US. Bad comparison, general.

Jackie:
Hillary did not just “embellish the landing at Bosnia,” she told an elaborate, bald-faced lie that she had given a lot of thought to. She told this lie on at least three (3) separate occasions. Thank God for Sinbad for revealing this lie. And when Hillary was first questioned about it, she said: “Well you know Sinbad’s a comedian,” and just laughed it off. She had the nerve to laugh it off again on Jay Leno.
What moral posture does she have to lay the wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier on Memorial Day – none.

RL in Illinois:
This country is not about a flag pin; it’s not about a flag; it is more about a citizens right to burn that flag in protest. Anyone who thinks wearing a flag pin makes them patriotic is sick. It’s like a baby that cries, not because it hurts, but because it wants others to think it hurts. This country is about the right of a person to get up and put forth an opinion that others might totally disagree with, and you have the right to protest it . That is what America is about, that is what we should celebrate. Our military fights for our Constitutional right to burn that flag if we wish. It’s called freedom of speech. The right to express ourselves any way we wish.

So what? Obama has been throwing the toilet at Clinto 3 to 1. Why is no one asking where Obama is getting all him monies. Americans know that its not from average Americans. I don’t know many Americans that can afford $1,000 (50% of all Obama donations).
ABC had one American that has given each month $50. This is a bit short of $1,000. This means that 241,000 donors gave Obams $1,000. This is allot of average Americans but not those that make the average American pay.

amazon traveler,
I think that you have been in the amazon too long!!
How in the world can you possibly excuse Hillary for the Bosnia issue?
Don’t you see the deep implications of what she said?? Wake up and stop drinking that snake oil that the Clintons are handing out.
Face the FACTS. The Clintons are a discrace to this country. They proved it in the past and now they are proving it big time with this Bosnia issue. Look how Bill outright lied last week to try to squash this Bosnia thing. Hillary got right on him and shut him up. Just look into their faces when they told these lies and see how good they are. They are really convincing but any intelligent person can see right through these scam artists.
Clinton can’t even manage her own campain. She’s broke due to her mis management. How could she ever manage this country!!
