Obama Says Bush Should Boycott Olympics If….

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller Reports: In his strongest language to date about the Olympics, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said that President Bush should boycott the opening ceremonies of if the Chinese do not take steps to stop the genocide in Darfur and respect the human rights of Tibetan people.

Regarding the full Olympic games this summer, Obama says a decision to boycott the opening ceremonies would be on the table but should be made close to the start of the games.

"As I have communicated in public and to the President, it is past time for China to respect the human rights of the Tibetan people, to allow foreign journalists and diplomats access to the region, and to engage the Dalai Lama in meaningful talks about the future of Tibet," Obama said in a statement.

The Democratic presidential frontrunner had seemed to want to avoid talking about the Olympics and Sen. Hillary Clinton’s call for a boycott of the Olympics opening ceremonies on August 8, 2008. The junior Senator from Illinois has a particularly tricky balancing act when it comes to the subject of the Olympics: Chicago is vying to host the 2016 games and one of Obama’s top campaign advisors and close friends, Valerie Jarrett, is the vice chair of Chicago’s bid committee.

Here is Obama’s full statement:

"If the Chinese do not take steps to help stop the genocide in Darfur and to respect the dignity, security, and human rights of the Tibetan people, then the President should boycott the opening ceremonies. As I have communicated in public and to the President, it is past time for China to respect the human rights of the Tibetan people, to allow foreign journalists and diplomats access to the region, and to engage the Dalai Lama in meaningful talks about the future of Tibet. I am also deeply concerned about China’s failure to support efforts to halt the genocide in Darfur. Regarding the Beijing Olympics this summer, a boycott of the opening ceremonies should be firmly on the table, but this decision should be made closer to the Games."

Oh, so he waits to see what others, like Hillary, are doing and then plucks up courage to say “me too, I agree!” He’s a wuzz!

Obama clearly knows what strong diplomacy is.
Hillary is trying to please the audience, caring less about Darfur and Tibet than about US polls.

Obama’s is the only plan that might get some leverage out of this. The Chinese might let reporters in and stop supplying the sudanese to save face.

Yet again- Barack Obama follows Hillary and echoes her ideas !! Not much of a leader. Hillary is the trail blazer who is unambigous, precise and clear in her prescriptions to end the war and restore our economy. Barack just plagarizes and paraphrases her ideas

His statement shows how much he understands diplomacy. Unlike our current president. Hillary doesn’t seem to understand it either as her statement seems to have been made to draw attention to her faltering campaign.

Well, that knocked a little of the glitter off of that guy for me. What we really need is one more president that thinks it’s his role to tell other countries what they should do. The role of the president is to defend and uphold our constitution. Nothing more. Nothing less. Listen to the oath of office.

He sure didn’t say this earlier when he was wishy washy about saying anything negative to China, after all we owe them money and don’t bite the hand that feeds us?
What a phony, what a slime ball – talk about change – this is what obama means about change. Say one thing and then two hours later, when you realize you said something wrong, quickly say something better. Confuse the public – say anything, keep them confused. I am running for president and I am right and Clinton and McCain and Bush are wrong, wrong, wrong – he is really ready for some clinical evaluation.

Hillary supporters, have you been watching the current polls out of PA, NC??? The Fat Lady is about ready to sing!!! I have been watching these candidates closely, Hillary is constantly looking down at prepared statements when she addresses the media and her rally supporters. If you watch OBAMA he talks to reporters with direct eye contact and never reads a prepared statement, that’s who I want running my White House, someone that articulates right from his mind and mouth.

This is just too funny. After sensing that what he said doesn’t look good (actually, looks really weak and reflects lack of conviction), he comes back two hours later to amend his statement.
After first saying that we shouldn’t offen “our banker”, he retracts, changes his mind, then acts like he is the really thoughtful one here.
This guy looks worse and worse every day.
To the person pointing out the fact that HRC is going to lose, yes, most of us know that. But that still does not change the fact that the democratic candidate, BO, is weak, unsure of himself and his positions, and lacks experience and courage. It’s easy to give speeches with no real WORLD impact. But when confronted with a major challenge, how to handle relations with the Chinese, he has proven himself to fold like a deck of cards.
In other news, a certain Republican claims that HRC is a viable Commander in Chief while BO certainly is not.
In other news, Edwards’ wife endorses HRC’s health care plan (give it 2 months and BO will also switch over to HRC policies, which seems to be his pattern)

I imagine some of the people who have already voted for Obama would like to change their votes! Obama, along with Dean and Pelosi, are destroying the Democratic Party. They say we have 48 states … not 50.

Obama’s approach is the right one. I’m sure China is going to do something about Darfur and Tibet once they feel the pressure. If on the other hand , like HRC advocates , we don’t attend the opening, it simply means there’s nothing else to do. What Obama suggests is in line with true diplomacy.

I don’t have to defend HRC because I was NEVER supporting her. My point was to question Obama, and you never addressed those points but instead assumed I was making pro-HRC rhetoric (when I never said anything in support of her directly).
Once again, I don’t think that well of HRC. But I think even less of BO.

Clinton has more military support from decision makers than McCain. Clinton has always provided measured responses. Obama is a parrot who is unqualified to render an opinion, much less a plan that is viable — he continues to flip flop because he has no clue. Clinton has my complete support and confidence to end the Iraq occupation responsibly.

If you listen to Hillary Clinton’s speech when she voted for the war in 2002 she said “THIS IS NOT A VOTE FOR ANY PREEMPTIVE WAR” She was right about Sadam Hussein and she was right to trust the OFFICE of the president.
She listed her experience and instructions should be done with that vote and President Bush didn’t listen. and if she DIDN’T vote for this New York would without doubt have been attacked again. The state she is there to represent.
The truth of the matter is the administration lied. That is the fault of Americans who voted for him. That does not mean a senate should EVER take the presidential office’s right to go to war. Thats a job requirement.
Help Wanted/ Experience Required.

Posted by: Stan Smith | April 9, 2008, 8:16 pm 8:16 pm

So based on what I have read so far, people who are for Obama say that whenever Clinton comes out and does something, she only does it to try to save her campaign, and when Obama says the exact same thing that Clinton says prior it is a sign of his leadership and how much he understands?!!! You people need to wake up- repeating what someone said doesn’t make you qualified to be president-even a 5 year old can repeat what others say, but it doesn’t mean they can lead a country. Plus whenever Obama is asked a question he never really answers the question, he either agrees with what someone else says, repeats the same thing or takes a neutral side. Clinton has been speaking out against China and human rights for over 15 years, but I guess people are too busy buying into Obama’s borrowed words to notice it. It would be interesting to see what Obama has to say when there is no one else there to feed him the information- bet it contains a lot of uhs and silence. Just like yesterday’s questioning to the General showed, a real leader is someone who asks the tough questions and doesn’t back down, and that person isn’t Obama!

If you don’t agree with Clinton’s call to boycott, what you do is to state that position clearly. You don’t go one way, see that public opinion is against you, then switch to the other position.
For instance, here is how a thoughtful person would have responded:
““I think the president should evaluate the situation as it evolves, perhaps granting more autonomy and talking with the Dalai Lama as a world figure. All of us condemn the brutality of human rights abuses. If I were him, I’d keep all my options open,” McCain said.”

I seen the article about Obama and he couldn’t find Tibet on the map. Obama said he had more foreign relations knowledge than Hillary or John. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha …

This was posted on another blog in relation to Senator Obama’s call for a possible boycott of the opening ceremonies:
‘A bit more measured and thoughtful than Sen. Clinton’s statement. I think a big part of him believes that the Olympics is a time to unite the world despite our differences, so he’s not as cut and dry as Hillary is. This a difference I’ve noticed about them for a while now, Hillary is more of a “right now,” type and Obama is more of a “let’s think about this” type. Not saying one is better than the other, it’s just something I’ve noticed.
I’m glad that he included Darfur in his statement. That’s something that’s been a little left out of this conversation.’
I could not have said it better myself! Using critical thinking skills are a sign of a great leader. Senator Obama is a thinking man which is one of many reasons I support him.

This guy is nothing but a smooth talker. All he learned is from his Pastor. I hope the young people of this country will see through him. He cannot change anything. All he will do is pardon his Slum Lord after he gets indicted. His Presidency will be a disaster, something worse than Bush. He is in a dream to make the world run like a high school. It is not the world we live in. He is dreaming.

Sandy,
Two things:
1. Obama is now agreeing with Clinton to boycott the ceremonies.
2. Obama needs to “think about it first” because he has NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT BEFORE. IT’s called, lack of experience

Obama was a deer caught in the headlights today when asked at a town hall meeting in PA what his position on boycotting the opening ceremonies of the Olympics was. Obama did not answer the question. Obama did not mention the word Olympics. But two hours later, after the town hall meeting was over, and Obama had time to consult with his puppet masters, Obama was able to take a position on the Olympics. Obama’s position, let’s wait and see what the rest of the world leaders do before I stick my neck out and take a stand. Obama, the best spineless puppet candidate your money can buy.

Posted by: rs | April 9, 2008, 8:36 pm 8:36 pm

Dennis- Obama you’re naive if you think he doesn’t have a prepared speech. You know when he moves his head from side to side- there are teleprompters there with his speech on it!
Jordan- everything you listed are things that happened over 10 years ago- move on. In case you didn’t notice, Bill Clinton isn’t running for office, HILLARY CLINTON is.
If you want to look at spouses and go there, Michelle Obama isn’t exactly any better with her remarks or her actions.
It really is a double standard how whenever Obama makes a mistake it is okay as long as he makes a speech about it. If Hillary on the other hand says something or makes a mistake, it is the most horrible thing in the world and is breaking news. It’s bad enough that the media does it, but people should have more common sense than that and start thinking for themselves for a change!

I’m curious if any Barack Obama supporters can address this (I’m guessing they will not, but change the subject to something else, call me names, or whatever):
“Barack Obama, whose fundraising prowess has set records, appears to be paving the way to bypass the public financing system in the fall without yet spelling out his intentions.
Last year, Obama indicated he would accept public funds if his Republican opponent did as well. But as John McCain takes steps to accept the $84 million available in federal money for the general election, Obama has been hedging”
SO MUCH FOR INTEGRITY

Obama does a lot of thinking. He thought wrong on drugs, alcohol, Resko, Farrakhan, Rev. wright, Malcom X, PLO, Black Panthers, Auchi, and Ayres. I’m glad he thinks before he acts, maybe he shouldn’t think or act…

Posted by: Johnny in Jacksonville | April 9, 2008, 8:38 pm 8:38 pm

In response to a questionnaire in November from the Midwest Democracy Network, which is made up of nonpartisan government oversight groups, Obama said: “Senator John McCain has already pledged to accept this fundraising pledge. If I am the Democratic nominee, I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election.”
“Barack Obama publicly promised the American people that he would accept public financing if he is the nominee of his Party. Launching his campaign by going back on a promise to voters would be dishonest, and exposes his politics of hope as empty rhetoric out of a typical politician,” McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds.

Obama has spoken out about Darfur and China’s support of genocide in the past. His position with respect to the Olympics is not surprising. Read “Not on Our Watch” or take a look at the “Devil Came on Horseback”. Obama understands the issues of the world today. Obama’s plan to end the war in Iraq seems to past the FAS test. It is feasable, has acceptable risks, and it is suitable. His ideas on ending the war are not necessarily orignal; many of his plans follow the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group. I was in Iraq when the group came over so I can relate to the things they talked about in the book. The war must end; but the key words that he uses are responsible end. Be as careful getting out as we were careless getting in.

Hillary Clinton is not perfect and so are we. At this point in time we the American people need to get together and nominate the person that will matter in November. Hillary Clinton can turn this country around. I am one of those people that have lost a job and soon will loose a home. My future and my childrens future depends on my democratic parties nominee. I have voted democratic all of my adult life. If Barack Obama is the nominee I will put mine and my childrens future in front of the party. I will vote John Mccain in November. Obama’s call for a change is just that a mere call. More and more we see who he truly is. He is nothing like the carefully crafted image him and his camp is portraying. I am calling out to the democrats and independents..More than ever we must all come together and call ourselves Americans and step up to the plate. It’s our turn to bat. Vote for Hillary!!!

Posted by: bpatz3 | April 9, 2008, 8:58 pm 8:58 pm

A ‘present’ vote is related only to Senator Obama’s tenure as a legislature in IL. It is a standard vote choice chosen by many IL legislators if they want to make a change in a bill or may have second thoughts about voting or not voting for it. There are no ‘present’ votes in Congress.

As usual, Obama came out with his advice/statement after Hillary. The point is not that Hillary wasn’t the first to say something on the boycott; the point is that Obama waits, as usual, until after Hillary makes a statement or a policy to then make his public announcement. Is there anything about him that is real, unique, special, etc.? Is he a mannequin who someone propped up out of thin air? Just who is he? At least with Hillary we know what we’re getting.

As his record shows, always undecided. No compromise, no commitment with the real issues. No indication as to what he really believes. Specially when the issues affect the interests of his friends. Obama’s position in Washington, DC where Mayor Fenty, a strong supporter of Obama is fighting heavily trying to keep the criminality down by regulating the use of arms: no position. The residents of Washington, DC are no longer important to him since he already got their vote. Obama’s position with respect to the use of arms in PA, known as one of the states where there are a lots of hunters: the use of arms is supported by the Second Amendment. How convenient, it happens to be that he is trying to win PA for whatever means possible. For some of the bloggers here it is called “diplomacy. In Washington, DC we called it “Obama dances according to the song that is convenient to him at the time.” Ask Mayor Fenty and the residents of Washington, DC. Sadly, Obama’s statement was about as interesting & tasty as an overcooked noodle. I agree that human rights around the world should be of paramount importance, but there are tens of millions beyond Tibet who suffer enormously every day. Pick a country or a place and you will find this to be true. Unfortunately, the China/Tibet issue has been somewhat “lost”, overpowered by this cheap political stunt (using the Olympics) that ultimately marginalizes
the real victims of these policies. Obama dropped the ball on this one; I heard no leadership or principles on his part…just political positioning.

“SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — An Illinois woman who referred to black children as “monkeys” is staying on as a delegate for presidential candidate Barack Obama.
The comment was not a racial insult and she has no reason to give up her position as an elected delegate, said Linda Ramirez-Sliwinski.
The Obama campaign had said she was stepping down, but Ramirez-Sliwinski said that was never her plan.
The incident took place over the weekend, when Ramirez-Sliwinski told some black children to stop playing in a tree near her home. She said they shouldn’t be climbing in the tree like monkeys.

China is a very old country with 5000 years of human experiences behind her. China is too wise to butt into a civil war of any nation. The west, specially America is young and impetuous even with good intentions. But remember the proverb “the road to HELL” is paved with good intentions” China is working quietly to bring peace in Sudan without openly offending a sovereign nation.
What has America’s good intention accomplished in Iraq?
China is hosting another 6 nation talk in Shanghai to help resolve the Iranian nuke problem. Hasn’t China helped to eliminate the danger in NK through enormous effort and patience of many years’ six-party talks?
Now China is painted as an ogre with all her contribution to peace totally forgotten. How about Iraq? If American has listened to China’s opposition, America would not be riding the tiger in Iraq now.
When will Americans learn and become smarter so they don’t confuse friends with foes and black with white?

obama likes to put conditions on an issue that is very much cut and dry: this issue has to do with SERIOUS Human Rights abuses by China toward Tibet—- and America and it’s true leaders, supposedly the greatest Defenders of the Human Rights, CANNOT cat-foot around and “go 1/2 way” (like is proposed by obama) in boycotting China’s treatment of Tibet—-America needs a REAL LEADER like Hillary Clinton to show China that we will not stand for their Human Rights abuses; Hillary came out very quickly with her statement that America’s moral responsibility should be to respond swiftly and clearly to China’s human right’s abuses by openly boycotting the opening ceremonies of the China-sponsored Olympics.
obama has waited too long to even respond to the issue….he lacks necessary Presidential leadership skills.

We have to break through it…” – Senator Barack

For all those who don’t know about a word called “diplomacy” and “international relations”, Obama is being like a President. He understands diplomacy and the politics behind it for the good of his own country. Unlike Hilary who is (conveniently) so quick to shout out loud against China in an obvious attempt to simply impress voters because she knew about this Tibet situation from way back when, she is green and inexperienced when it comes to dealing with foreign countries. You all know China has America on a huge money leash right now, we owe them plenty of $$$ not to mention China makes up about 9% of USA international trade. And we also can’t forget China’s neighbor, North Korea, you know, the country with the Nukes who hates us! China is our ally, we do not want China ticked off at us right now . Sure we absolutely DON’T agree on what they are doing to Tibetans, but there is a smart, tactical, Presidential way of dealing with this situation that won’t put our relationship with China in jeopardy instead of just scolding China like you would a child. Nothing will be accomplished this way and Obama is doing the right thing by saying he disagrees with their human right policy, but handling it diplomatically and presidential, unlike like Quick-draw Hillary.

It better to look before you leep , if not you will find yourself in a situation where you dont expect yourself, that is why we have lost 4,024 soldiers and $460billion for the war that we should not have waged.
Slow and steady is better than quick reaction without thinking what will be the outcome, that power of wise people.
Think first before action.

asatkins: how presumptiously like obama you supporters are…..the audacity of proclaiming obama the winner, when in THIS country there are STILL other states that have to choose whom THEY want as the Democratic Nominee. You obamabots cannot silence the voters who have yet to vote—-you can TRY, like how obama wanted to silence the voters voices in the states of Michigan and Florida. But last time I looked, here in America, everybody who qualifies to vote gets to make a decision for their choice of Nominee, and the contest is still going on.

What Happened to the REAL Democratic Party,
What does the D rules stated about moving the two states in question up? does those rules are meant for animals? No
Even Sen. Hillary herself said she knew that those votes will not be count in one of her statement during one of her campaign, but for the fact that she is loosing she now want the votes to be counted, this is another double standard. I have nothing against her but I would like every one of them to be honest with what we are doing that is only my concern

Posted by: asatkins | April 9, 2008, 10:21 pm 10:21 pm

asatkins: it’s a bunch of malarky that those states got punished. Other states moved their Primaries up, though not to before Iowa, but Many did—-and they were not punished.
My beef with the DNC and their ludacris decision-making: the judgement that they used to level punishment in the form of “stripping their State’s residents’ votes and delegates away” is, plainly, against the Constitution that guarantees votes for their citizens. The DNC et al could have come up with punishment of the Florida and Michigan DEMOCRATIC state officials only (NOT the innocent citizens). The DNC could have decided to have fines levied against these state officials for deciding to move up their states’ voting Primaries.

Posted by: What Happened to the REAL Democratic Party? | April 9, 2008, 10:35 pm 10:35 pm

What Happened to the REAL Democratic Party?,
What happened to the Repubican in those states? if you can remember?, their votes were halved to as a sign of purnishment. which some people in D suggested but Sen.Hillary campaign did not buy the the suggestion.
Why blaming Obama? why did she said Obama did not want those states to participated in the process, that is what pissed me off with her.
when something went wrong let find means of sorting it out rather blaming someone else.
So it is not too late, two of themcan still have a joint ticket. if she wants.

This is my problem with America today – everything has to be black and white, cut and dry. People are complaining that Obama is giving leeway to the Chinese here; what he’s really doing is giving them time to take concrete steps to improve the situation. Clinton’s trying to score cheap political points off real crises in Darfur and Tibet, and Obama’s being a leader. Real leaders don’t shoot (or boycott) first and ask questions later. Give the Chinese time to reconsider their position, and if they do nothing, then go forward with the (empty gesture of a) boycott. (Boycotting the opening ceremonies? Please. It’s like saying I’ll boycott my home team’s games, then skip the national anthem.)

“Obama plays “follow the LEADER” once again. What a coward !”
Obama can take years to find his RIGHT judgement after picking up the phone at 3 AM! All will be gone by then and he will be left alone standing with his right judgement!
Obama has no presidential/leadership quality. He waits to hear what Hillary says on an issue and then parrots it after a few days. What’s this Obama nonsense???
Hillary or McCain, 08!!

Posted by: libre | April 9, 2008, 11:27 pm 11:27 pm

Well Obama has taken a firm position of sitting on the fence and waiting for the wind to blow in a popular direction. Someone should tell Obama that Colin Powell says not to boycott the Olympics. What should Obama do, boycott, not boycott, flip, or flop, follow Hillary’s lead, or look bewildered while making my own decision, ask Axelrod what to do, or look befuddled while I think of an answer, flip, or flop, or just change the subject and talk about “I made a speech against the war in Iraq in 2002″ which makes me an expert on foreign policy!

Posted by: calli | April 9, 2008, 11:28 pm 11:28 pm

Nancy Pelosi talked about boycotting the games not the ceremony. Obama just follows Hillary on every issue. That is the reason he is unelectable he is a follower not a leader.

Posted by: libre | April 9, 2008, 11:31 pm 11:31 pm

No one pays any attention to Nancy Pelosi. They pay attention to Hillary Clinton. Nancy Pelosi is Speaker of the House in a Congress that is presently saddled with one of the lowest job approval ratings in the history of this country, Her credibility on any of the issues is strained to say the least, and she is not running for office, so maybe she should just go back to the House and do what the taxpayers in California are paying her to do.

i hope that all of America is seeing just why there was such a big push by the Obama folks to get Hillary Clinton to drop out of the race. The more time goes by, the more Americans see what an “empty suit” this Obama guy really is. Hillary Clinton blew him out of the water in the hearings on the war in Iraq, showing America just how well she has learned her job as U S Senator, and at the same time pointing out what a very junior Senator Obama really is. Don’t faint, even MSNBC had to say that she was by far the best of the 3 candidates in her knowledge of the issues and the scope of her questions. Hillary Clinton gets it – too bad so many of the hate-filled Obama fans don’t.

Posted by: Grammy Barb | April 9, 2008, 11:58 pm 11:58 pm

I’m glad Sen. Obama is voicing his opinion on this…for some reason it seems to mean more from a person of his character rather than from Clinton who does nothing but gripe.

Posted by: pablo | April 10, 2008, 12:22 am 12:22 am

Obama is a farse but I’ll give him one thing…he’s consistently true to his church. THIS IS ABOUT TIBET – NOT DARFUR but he just has to throw that one in there. Don’t want to risk losing his constituency. Gotta use every opportunity possible to make sure that everyone clearly recognizes what his priorities are. And to think – stupid Americans think it will be in any way about them.

Posted by: Jackie | April 10, 2008, 1:05 am 1:05 am

China has to stop the genocide in Darfur and respect the human rights of Tibetan people. Housing the Olympics is an honor. And the Olmpics is symbolic of Peace and that’s why doves are released, as a symbol of peace. Even the torch is a symbol of peace. It is the right of the US to be included among the nations boycotting this Peace Game, especially the open ceremony. And that should be on record in Chinese history that many nations refuse to participate because China and its 2008 Chinese Government have continued China’s human-rights abusing tactics. What China is doing to the Tibetans is a disgrace. China has to be portrayed as a nation in, not only china’s history, but in the world’s history, not deserving the honor of holding the very important Peace Game. It’s expanding as a world power, and if it refuses to reject its abusive tactics today, the world should fear that it’d continue its abuse of human rights right up to its future leadership.
Every human being deserves to be treated with dignity, security, and with humanity. All nations should be intolerant of nations that are acomplices to human rights abusing. All nations should unite to fight against all human rights abusers. And Senator Obama is right to say we should boycott the Olmpics Game, especially the Opening Ceremony. Let China feel the dishonor.

Posted by: Bill B | April 10, 2008, 1:07 am 1:07 am

Just heard on PBS that 80% of Chinese are satisfied with their government and life according to polls. If there is such serious human rights violation, why are 80% of people not complaining?
What do we call the legal system in America? A poor black fellow was falsely jailed and nearly excuted for 26 years for murder he did not commit. The real murderer was known to his lawyers by the lawyers could not divulge his name because of confidenciality law. The lawyers of the real murderer got a release to admit the fact after his death and got the poor black young man, now old man pardoned for murder he did not commit.
Real respect for human rights or rather respect for criminals’ rights?
Intentionally or unintentionally, human rights are always in some peril in every country in the world. China might have a bigger problem because of the short history of her legal system which needs lots of improvement. But there is no intent to violate anyone’s human rights. How else can 80% of the people are satisfied? The polls are not taken by the Chinese government.
HUMAN RIGHTE OR NOT HUMAN RIGHTS, CHINA IS NOT AMERICAN OR OBAMA’S BUSINESS. OBAMA IS NOT RUNNING FOR CHINESE PRESIDENT.

Posted by: 80% | April 10, 2008, 1:16 am 1:16 am

One thing is clear. Whichever candidate is trying to boycott the Beijing Olympics, he/she is not going to get the votes from the American Chinese.

We have been letting China mess with us and other nations long enough. CNN calls Clinton “a long time advocate of a tougher approach toward the Chinese government.” I agree. I understand where Obama comes from. He doesn’t want Chicago to by boycotted or be a political situation in 2016, but I think it conflicts a little with his backers in Chicago, and how it reflects his campaign. He did the right thing by saying he agrees, but I don’t give him credit for being a better diplomat like some of you think. I think it shows yet again his inexperience. If you are going to make these statements you need to be strong and unwavering. We are trying to pressure them to help Darfur and stop the violence in Tibet. If we ask nicely they will not stop. That is the point of threatening the olympics. Why would we be threatening them if any diplomacy had worked? I don’t agree that we should wait closer to the games to decide. They need to know where we stand NOW. It is worse on diplomacy to wait, and then back out at the last minute. This far in advance and it gives the Chinese govt. a chance to respond AND if they choose to step into Darfur, it gives them time to start that movement.

Posted by: Alice | April 10, 2008, 3:57 am 3:57 am

Nonsense and obviously sick jealousness can be smelt in Barack’s words between the lines.
“If the Chinese do not take steps to help stop the genocide in Darfur and to respect the dignity, security, and human rights of the Tibetan people,”
I have no idea what they’re talking about. Maybe they have no idea either.
“and to engage the Dalai Lama in meaningful talks about the future of Tibet. ”
As I know, Dalai Lama is not an honest man like he himself said. He is a slave master of Tibet, he rules his people as the pigs and dogs. He thought himself as the God. Nearly all the people in Tibet hate him. So till now, almost no Tibetans in China remember him. In the war he was defeated, and the Tibet slaves were free.
If US people like this guy, you can elect him to be your president. Why not? Just think about it.

Posted by: Jaimy | April 10, 2008, 4:01 am 4:01 am

Obama and Hilary, please study the modern history of Tibet first. After that, you will find out whether the Tibetans nowadays need such a slave master.

The olympics should not be used this way. It is wrong totally wrong. Its not a poltical arena. Those who use it for protest are only increasing a risk of violence at the olympics. There are other ways to deal with China which would be more effective. Nixon had good results with China.

Posted by: AnnD52 | April 10, 2008, 5:42 am 5:42 am

He copied Clinton.
Anyone seem to see a pattern here? Obama really doesnt stand for anything. He hides until the smoke has cleared, then sees what he should do after everyone else decided.
Just like his stump speech on Iraq. That was the party line. Most democrats were singing the same tune.
Its not like Obama BOLDLY stood against the war and nobody else did.
If this is the guy you want as president, who never actaully stands for ANYTHING , but waits to see what is cool first, then americans are DUMBER than I ever imagined.

Can you please update the fact that the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government have both asked for their to be respect for the games…and the torch ceremony and have not said to boycott.
Maybe Obama is being smart…considering Hillary used this to change the subject…and the British prime Minister is still going to the closing ceremonies…
Obama gave the best answer… Hillary gave the worst… because she was trying to jump on an issue to change the subject. If the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government are saying “don’t shut us/them up” but “respect the games in Beijing” …what does that tell you.
All the Hillary supporters aren’t listening to anything in the world outside their drumbeat.

Posted by: Mike from Texas | April 10, 2008, 8:28 am 8:28 am

I think what alot of people are failing to consider is how slippery our relationship with China is. Does anyone remember who exactly is giving us financing for this war that we have waged? It’s China people, we are in thick with them as business partners and basically they are our loan sharks. Imagine if all of our politicians made hasty decisions about boycotting these Olympic opening ceremonies or even the games and China called their loan due… we are not in the position to make demands of China.. it is a hard truth but a truth nonetheless. Diplomacy and communication is what is needed here, not an ultimatum. I am glad to see Obama make a decision and a statement based on more than just his emotions and political campaign.

Posted by: whatever | April 10, 2008, 8:31 am 8:31 am

Another brilliant plan from the master of arrogance. The olympics should be about the competition, not about politics.
On top of that, I’d like to ask Obama what exactly the US is doing to prevent the genocide in Darfur? Sure, he co-sponsored the Menendez amendment that helps keep UN peacekeeping forces in Darfur, but other than that he hasnt done a lot.
If the US really wanted to do something meaningful about China, we would impose strict trade restrictions angainst China. That wont happen though, Susie soccer mom wants to be able to purchase the cheap chinese goods. The rest is all hot air.

Or how about watching your taxes double or triple just to pay back the INTEREST we owe them for their war financing? It is people like you that are arrogant, that think the US is an all knowing power that can make demands of other countries without ever considering what this administration has us into…

Posted by: whatever | April 10, 2008, 9:03 am 9:03 am

Typical Obama – vague. No REAL plan.
He says, “Bush should boycott Olympics if the Chinese do not take steps to……”
So what are the steps the Chinese need to take? Is it that difficult for Obama to state what needs to be done or is it that he just plain doesn’t know?
This man is a parasite survivng on the knowledge and experience of others and pretending he knew it all along.

Posted by: Donna | April 10, 2008, 9:30 am 9:30 am

Civil rights abuses, Tibet and China’s position in Darfur are not new topics, True leadership would have been using diplomacy prior to now and not just use an event to encourage multinational cooperation as a political event. We need a new leader. Someone who won’t wait until it is politically correct to start a dialog. There is only one person with those skills in this contest.

lol Obama didn’t take his time to make an informed judgement, he just neeeded to see how everyone else felt. He needed advisors to a yes or no question? Boycott the ceremony or not? It was that easy. Did he call a bunch of advisors and analyze in depth how to say the words “I agree.” That just means he is stupid. Barack probably asked his advisors..1) tell me where Tibet is, 2) what did Hillary say about it, 3) so is China good or bad and what should I say to get more votes,4) Can you call michelles and tell her to give me back my testes

Posted by: crazypolitics | April 10, 2008, 10:14 am 10:14 am

Yep, right after Hillary Clinton called for a boycott of the opening ceremony, there was an article stating that Obama was “conflicted” about that sort of stance. I mentioned then on another blog that Obama is ALWAYS conflicted if he hasn’t seen a position in writing by someone of note. He’s a follower, not a leader, and even then he uses endless words to say the same thing: I am not ready to take a risk, to stick my neck out. This from a guy who wants “change” and “THE FUTURE” and wants reconciliation in America, bringing people together. He won’t even be able to understand the differing positions.

Everyone forgets what a sham it was when Jimmy Carter decided to boycott the Moscow Olympics in 1980 over the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
First of all it cut off all dialogue with the Soviets on this issue and stiffened their resolve to remain. Secondly it basically destroyed the 1984 olympic games in LA when the Soviets and their surrogates refused to participate.
The only ones who suffered through this process were the athletes and it created an even greater rift between nations.
Let’s embrace the lessons of history. Boycotts do not work – dialogue does.

Mr. Obama is a creation of the corrupt Chicago democratic party machine. We who have lived and worked in Chicago have seen the machine in action for many years. As everyone knows, Chicago is the corruption capitol of the world. Mr. Obama and Mr. Daley have opposed all reform and transparency in Chicago and Illinois. Ask yourself why so many Illnois politicians end their careers in federal prison. Mr. Obama is using the tactics of the corrupt Chicago machine to fool many people.

Yes, we cannot take a strong stance against China. Not since China owns us. Due to the free trade agreement with China, we now have little manufacturing remaining in the US. China sends us our daily need of poison in our pet food, our toys, our medicine, our toothpaste & mouthwash, our food. Mexico, Columbia and Afghanistan send our daily need of mind-stupor drugs.
Those of us who are left will be so full of poison, drugs and propaganda that we will never care if Obama’s advisers (Gary Hart, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Jay Rockefeller & Tom Daschle) sell off the rest of the manufacturing to other countries. Got to keep those ports and borders open.

Think about this logically. China is mowing down peaceful monks in Tibet & Obama calls on China to intervene in Darfur!
What do you suppose would happen when a military that has no problem running over peaceful monks with tanks enters the wild lawless environment in Darfur? What happens the first time a shot from a tribal faction or a rock is tossed at the Chinese military? This would be a prescription for disaster.
America should be repairing damage & regaining influence in the world not inviting communist countries to occupy & control another continent.
Obama is a reckless incompetent & the media ought to be calling him to the carpet for this instead of giving him another free pass.

Better late than never Obama, did you have to wait to see what the next President was going to say first, so you could copy as usual.

Posted by: D | April 10, 2008, 12:58 pm 12:58 pm

If Obama is so concerned about Darfur, shouldn’t he have been trying to get our government to intervene his entire Senatorial tenure? What bills has he introduced in his 3 1/2 yrs in the Senate that would help Darfur. Did he conduct any meetings in the sub-committee on European affairs that he chairs which would help coordinate a worldwide solution to Darfur?
Does he not realize that Tibet is part of China, and Darfur is part of Sudan? The Tibetan monks – know the world wide for their peace loving actions – are being slaughtered. Is it because they are Buddists or have nothing of material relevance that Obama puts the “threat” based on Darfur?? What in the world is wrong with Obama? Is he that ignorant or that biased?

Florida voted- don’t worry, he’ll jump on the bandwagon tomorrow when he realizes he’s the only one out of the three not to step up and take a stand. ;) How in the world people think of this guy as a leader…is beyond me. Preacher is a better description.

What a coward this Obama is!

megan
When senators like Kerry,Edwards and Clinton voted top authorize Bush to go to war if WMD inspections failed I believe the evidence and intelligence they reading was telling them the US was in imminent danger.
When Obama gave his speech there were hardly anyone present. Jessie Jackson was the keynote speaker that day. He only gave that speech once but his campaign has reconstructed it with applause lines.
He was not that vocal about speaking out against the war…His recent nati-war all day long stance has developed over the course of this campaign…he was not active in anti-war protests nor did he participate in any of the votes to defund the war. Obama was in the state Senate of IL when he opposed the war…not so much when he got to the US Senate where he actually had a vote…protest on again when he becomes a candidate.
Good judgement or an excellant PR firm? This is not a moral stand it is a political strategy to be on all sides of an issue so you can’t be wrong.
A president will have to have unpopular stands and make reasonable independent judgements…or else you have George Bush..

Once again he follows Clinton’s lead and the press acts as if it is a revelation. As usual he is poser.
Why is he so concerned about Darfur when his cousin Odinga in Kenya has participated in genocide himself. Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. He is a poser. David Axelrod is a marketing genius and has realistically “created” Obama. He is an illusion. The reason he is such a huge success is because the country is vulnerable due to economic and international conditions. That leaves the public open and defenseless to any kind of political rhetoric.Add the bias media who Axelrod has been successful in winning over and you have a pretty appealing candidate. It is just gift wrapping. It seems like nobody cares what’s in the box.

Posted by: SKY | April 10, 2008, 2:08 pm 2:08 pm

By the way what does China have to do with Dafur and why is their responsibility greater than ours?
Now I’m just puzzled…

Posted by: Jackie | April 10, 2008, 2:09 pm 2:09 pm

Good job Obama!
You should have gotten your talking points from Axelrod a little sooner though and responded with this the other day when asked. Is this how you would respond to a real crisis in our country? It didn’t work well for our current President on Katrina.

DREAMS FROM MY FATHER, LAME EXCUSES FROM MY GRANDFATHER read Ann Coutler today.
If this is correct he is even more nefarious then I thought. It means he knew of the coming Rev Wright problem and set this up to excuse his behavior for not leaving the Black Theology Church.
This guy is an African first everyone else second. Genocide in Darfur and unrest in Tibet. Unrest in Tibet! How about the millions they most likely killed in the previous say 55 years. We can see right though this guy, Nobama. NO THANKS.

Posted by: jacram | April 10, 2008, 2:59 pm 2:59 pm

OBAMA IS NOTHING MORE THAN A SLICK POLITICIAN WHO HAS A LOT OF PEOPLE CONVINCED THAT HE’S THE CANIDATE WHO’S GOING TO IMPLEMENT CHANGE. I FIND IT AMAZING HOW HE STRADDLES THE FENCE UNTIL THE LAST MOMENT ON EVERY ISSUE. I’M AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN AND I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA!
NOBAMA 08!!! NOBAMA 08!!!

I don;t think the president should boycot anything, especially the Olympics, or maybe he should boycot one thing — Iraq. I think the athletes should be left out of this and do what you want with the government on government time but keep these hideous politics out of the Olympics and let the sports continue!!! Wasn’t that Obama’s original position, I think so.

Posted by: RuthieM | April 10, 2008, 3:45 pm 3:45 pm

Now all 3 canidates are talking boycott. I just hope it doesn’t become violent. The games should not be used as a stage for politics

Obama has been a Illinois Senator for a year or more now.. Please tell me 1 thing he has proposed in the Senate??
Exactly, NOTHING — he has voted on many things but has yet to introduce 1 item himself or for his state…
We don’t need someone in office that has no clue what to do and with no experience I surely do not want him leading our country….
Once a muslim always a muslim and they want to rid the world of non-muslims….

As usual, Hillary is focused on the fight and the press. Obama is focused on results.
Saying you’ll boycott the opening ceremonies will accomplish nothing! Having a plan for reasonable criteria (he didn’t say they had to solve all the problems, they are all things China can do without a major regime change.) and giving China the opportunity to comply might actually get more results than having a tantrum and not going.

Posted by: Kay Kay | April 10, 2008, 7:21 pm 7:21 pm

What would Obama do as President? Steal ideas from whom? This joker doesn’t have a clue! Whether he stole the idea from Nancy Pelosi or Hillary, he obviously is a SLOW thinker & doer. We can’t have a President with delayed reflexes…

Posted by: ssmolly | April 10, 2008, 7:59 pm 7:59 pm

hahahahaha he has followed Hillary’s lead in every debate when tough questions were thrown to her first, and now yet again he follows HILLARY’S LEAD and nowwwwwwww says the President should boycott the Olympics. This guy is a joke and indeed a slick Chicago hack!

American stance on China has always crack me up :)
How many fellow Americans here actually been to China? Talk to Chinese people over there in China? How many people here know the history of Tibet(Besides the lies you heard from Dalai Lama and his croonies)? How many people actually know how Tibetans live before and after 1949? Has anyone here actually been to Tibet?
Here’s a few facts about Tibet, if you don’t believe me look it up yourselves, but please ask the real historians that actually know, not disgruntled former slave master monks in exile.
1. Before 1949, 5% of the Tibetans owned 99.99% of the properties and anything remotely valuable in Tibet. Those 5% constitutents are a)the lama(Tibetan monks) b)slave owners. the rest 95% of Tibetans are basically slaves. the saying there was “even wild goats on mountains have an owner!” Tibetans were even free to hunt nor fish.
2. Before 1949, those 95% of Tibetan’s got no said over their own life. Their masters and Lamas have total control over them and could demand anything. Many of Dalai Lama’s relics and artifacts MADE FROM HUMAN BONES & SKINS testified to the horror. P.S. Human skins were taken from tortured live slaves.
3. Many of the Anti-Chinese proponents in this country has received Artifacts & Relics made from Tibetan Bones and Skins from Dalai Lama as a gift. Oh, one of those is a very well-known Hollywood figure that’s been misleading Americans with false infos on Tibet.
4. Live human sacrifices were practiced in Tibet until the Communist Chinese has taken over. There are official documents from Potala Palace that revealed the horrifying truths.
The lists goes on and on, so much for Tibetan’s “human rights” under dalai lama’s rule.
Learn the truth before you speak, people!

yet again u guys in America think u know it all. I have not seen any president that is too good; it is a president’s ability to assemble and manage the intelligence and experience of others that matters. the three candidates on parade now are good but are not the best America can ofer. Anyway, racism is a way of life in America and Obama is living up to it.

Posted by: Gilberto | April 11, 2008, 11:19 am 11:19 am

Ameican politicans disgust me. Even obama has to say boycott olympic. Tibet is part of china, dalai lama is a paid puppy of US. free tibet sounds like free Iraq, US military base will be followed. part of US invasion. But our government will be broke by then. People have no jobs, houses, or food eventually, only a bunch of billionaires.
1.4 billion of chinese are getting mad now. So 99 percent of overseas chinese Americans are mad, US government has no more messing around.

Posted by: jjj | April 11, 2008, 11:55 am 11:55 am

US should stop killing people around the world first then, talking around how other country should stop the killing commited by others. Human rights become a joke when police can search you even going to a subway. Other coutries, including china, people take a flight without checking id or bags. WE still think that we have more rights.

Posted by: jjj | April 11, 2008, 12:00 pm 12:00 pm

I find it funny that people say he is following. Just because he took time to weigh the issue . Its Hillary’s fast thinking that made her vote for Iraq, Now she wants her vote back. This is the kind of decisions that need to be made with consensus , obviously the centrifugal Bush terms have taught you nothing.

Posted by: Ray | April 11, 2008, 1:39 pm 1:39 pm

Obama is also the candidate who said we should talk to our enemies (remember Iran) but now, it’s time to boycott China. So which is it Barack? Does he plan on boycotting countries when he is president also? This sounds like Bush all over again with the evil empires of the world. Again, this is the same man a few months ago in the debates that called for dialog with our enemies. What a hypocrite.

Posted by: Tim | April 11, 2008, 2:38 pm 2:38 pm

Why would anyone think that China cares what any american politician has to say? Both obama and clinton are lapdogs of corp. interests. People should wake up and look around. We don’t need to be worried about the problems in darfur or tibet, WE NEED to worry about our own homeless and helpless people and the state of our once great country before it is gone as well. Ron Paul 2008.

Obamba has already apologised for his
“Bitter” statement, so lets stop acting
like children and get on with the
rest of the primaries. Everyone at times mispeakes. Hillery, Bill and John
have all said things that they wish they had not said. The important thing is to make apologies and move on.

Again, Senator Obama comes up with the same idea after he hears it from the Clinton campaign. The man has no intergity, judgement or experience needed to express new ideas on how to make America better. Everything about his campaign is borrowed or stolen from another candidate or organization, even his slogans.
Vote for Senator Clinton.

Hillary is an idiot. Obama is not too great either. For Liberal candidates who want us to mind our own countries business and keep out of other countries like Iraq, these hypocrites sure want to cause lots of tensions between us an China…
