Obama Says Opponents Focusing on Character, Not Policy
ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama said today that the success of his campaign has caused his opponents to raise questions about his character, rather than talking about differences they have in policy.
"We’ve been so successful in this campaign that, you know, right now people aren’t arguing with me about policy, people don’t think they’ve got better ideas than me," Obama argued at a town hall in Wilson, N.C. "What now they’re gonna start talking about is me."
Obama told the audience that people are focusing on and bringing up questions about his character through many different ways.
"They’re gonna suggest, well, you know he’s got a funny name, and you know, he hasn’t been wearing a flag pin lately. So people want, you know, they are asking questions about my values and my character and my patriotism," he said.
Three times this past week — at town halls in Indiana and Pennsylvania — Obama fielded questions from voters who wanted him to clear up questions about his patriotism amid rumors of him being a Muslim or not saluting the flag.
"That’s just not true," Obama told a voter in Kokomo, Ind. "Another way of saying it is, it’s a lie."
Obama’s caution to voters of North Carolina that between now and when they go to the polls on May 6 they are going to hear negative comments about him, comes at a time when he has tried to reintroduce himself to voters, playing up his humble roots to woo the working class demographic among which his support has been weak.

Oh I think they have focused on policy long enough Obama. Just how many times can a person look at the word “change” and talk about it.
Obama is done anyway. The other article says Hillary is the only candidate that can beat McCaine. Oh well Obama, better luck in the future.

The person running for President should be held to a higher standard. Is Obama surprised by the scrutiny he is receiving? Maybe that explains the lack of good judgement in picking his friends and business associates. Or is it that radical left wing liberals really don’t understand why some Americans would object to a presidential candidate having former American terrorists as friends, a corrupt Syrian businessman as a friend, or a racist pastor for 20 years. Yes, character does matter – especially when you are claiming to be about a new kind of politics, implying your superior character.
GO HILLARY 08!

Republican swift-boating has long begun, with the Hillbillies cheering from the sidelines. Still, Obama stands tall for change.

It is suprising to hear that from OB since the OB camp has been zeroed in Hillary’s Bosnia sniper incident for the last few weeks in Penn State. I guess it’s all politics as usual, no matter how you cut it.

What this really boils down to is that Hillary is trying to sell the idea that a black candidate can’t win, but she needs a way to say it without sounding like the bigot she is. She also assumes that white voters don’t want to vote for a black man, and she figures that if she can just give them an excuse NOT to vote for Obama, she can beat him via the racist vote. And she has finally latched onto a few handy excuses, including crazy old Wright (who conveniently happens to be black, too, an easy way to keep color in play without actually saying it) and the nonsense about Obama being an “elitist” (this from Hillary, of all people). That’s simply code for “he’s not like you – he’s black, but now you guys have an excuse not to support him.”

Character does matter,
Learn how to read, THAT is what the man is saying. Between the two of them, I’d rather suffer through an Obama admin. before suffering through a Clinton one. In fact, if I were not voting for McCain and I had to pick someone else – I would pick him over her.
Only TRUE DIE HARD SUPPORTERS of Clinton, and I mean total dumb as/’es think this woman has characther. She has none, she has proven her characther is ZERO.
Face it, we were right about the Clinton’s. We told you all then, they were morally challenged disgusting pigs of people and you all defended them to the death. Well, Well, Wellllll…they themselves have proven us “vast right wing” Republicans correct!
A guy at work told me, he said: “There will NOT be another Clinton Administration. I don’t care if Rev. Wright damns my mother, I will never vote for another Clinton again…see he understand the context in which the man delivered the message. And if Hillary’s pastor had delivered that same message, you all would understand it as well. Regardless, the man is correct, THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER CLINTON ADMINISTRATION. Hillary herself has sought to that.

But when we question his experience, we’re told that it’s his charicter that mattters, so aren’t we supposed to be questioning his experience?
Also, obama’s campain is so quick to cry racism because he’s black, why do they never use those race cards when people call him a muslim?

It was always assumed that the first black candidate for President that had a real chance to be elected would have to be superior in so many ways — like Harvard Law Review, College Professor, community organizer, and a great speaker. Barack is all of those things and since they can not go after him, they go after his associates.
Starting with the Keating Five I believe John McCain has his own associate problems. Unfortunately you can not reduce the Keating Five to a series of sound bites.

Character is important for a President to have! We can liken this race to another race back in history—the race of the century. Obama does not want another debate as the last one his “character” took a beating and if he is ahead then just spend dollars on ads, and commercials and he may still win. No effort needed. Yet, this voice keeps coming, I’ll debate you on your terms. Come show the American people what you have. Sounds just like the owners of that tiny race horse from the past called “Sea Biscuit”. Hillary is like Sea Biscuit, she is mighty, strong, enduring, has stamina and strength as we all have seen over the many past months. She doesn’t give up, takes criticism with the best of them. Perhaps like the Biscuit she will surprise many and take this race. I like apple pie, the American flag, our traditions, our memories of better days, and we don’t need to “change” America, we just need to improve America. We have magnificent people, dedicated people, people with compassion and high ideals. We do not need people like the Rev. Wright to tell us we are awful. We try to do our best and we are a caring nation—no nation in the world gives more money to charity, or help to other countries more than the US. Vote Hillary and watch another race make history.

Couldn’t agree more Boondock, but, unfortunately folks would rather talk about a slightly wacky ex-pastor who is clearly seeking his moment in the sun, rather than issues like the war (shall we stay for 100 years?)or the economy (a subject Senator McCain admits he knows nothing about).

Rev. Wright for Vice President and Black Liberation Theology principles become law of the land. Oh yeah. NOT. IS REV. WRIGHT RELEVANT TO THIS ELECTION PROCESS?: For those who think that Rev. Wright is not an issue in the campaign, I beg to differ. First, it doesn’t matter that Rev. Wright has resigned; he was Obama’s “mentor and spiritual adviser” for 20 years. Second, there is no dispute that Rev. Wright believes in and preaches black liberation theology. He admitted it on the church’s website, before the church scrubbed the site for offensive materials in an effort to conceal their true nature. Third, I recommend that all read a few books about black liberation theology to learn more about Obama’s so-called “religion,” and make the determination for yourselves whether or not it has any relationship to Christianity or the teachings of Jesus. Just to give you a head start, here are a few quotes from a founder of black liberation theology (and Rev. Wright’s theological mentor), Rev. James Cone, about Obama’s religion:
(1) “To be Christian is to be one of those whom God has chosen. God has chosen black people.” (2) “While it is true that blacks do hate whites, black hatred is not racism.” (3) “All white men are responsible for white oppression.” (4) “Theologically, Malcolm X was not far wrong when he called the white man “the devil.” (5) “If there is any contemporary meaning of the Antichrist, the white church seems to be a manifestation of it.” (6) “Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community. Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love.”
Now, if you don’t think that the statements above are racist, then you and I can agree to disagree. The real issue is that Americans in general need to know about the racist nature of Obama’s religion, because it goes to the heart of his character and judgment. Then, once America understands this issue, if they agree with the racist bent of his church, so be it. I have a feeling, however, that once people find out about this issue, he will be losing supporters by the droves. If it doesn’t happen now, it will in the general election if, God forbid, he is the Democratic nominee.

Has anyone here read books by Rev James Cone; Rev wrights black theological mentor? If you haven’t read Rev. James Cone’s books to find out what Rev. Wright believes, preaches and his church scrubbed from his web site. Obama POTUS and Rev. Wright Vice President what a horrible thought. Oh did anyone else see the Los Angeles Times article about Illinois state Senator Obama laundering money $112,000 salary Obama received from a political supporter Robert Blackwell through Obama’s law firm to hide the fact it came from Robert Blackwell who received political monetary favors from Obama totaling $320,000 in Illinois State Grants. Obama committed a crime that is illegal Obama supporters, the DNC and Super-delegates. Obama will eventually be indicted and charged with this crime and others. The DNC, Obama supporters and Super-delegates are giving the election to McCain if Obama is the Democratic Nominee for President. It’s time for Obama to quit before he gets arrested. The debates and primaries are for show casing the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates and their solutions for issues for the voters. The debates and the primaries are for the people so they can make an informed decision and vote for who is the best candidate who demonstrates Presidential qualities, experience, able to answer question easily with real substance and to the point, support the plans and solutions for issues that will benefit the people not the elitist aristocracy or hidden radical agendas. Obama refuses to do any more debates because he is a sore loser he performed miserably by not answering the questions with straight forward to the point answers and lost all of the debates. Obama is scared that his elitist beliefs and attitudes towards the people of the USA and his disrespect and hate of the USA and its people will be completely exposed. Obama is scared that his true greedy desires in obtaining power and money will be completely exposed. Late breaking news Illinois Senator Obama laundered money (person income) from Blackwell through his the lawyer firm he worked for prior to his being elected to the Illinois Senate. Blackwell who received political favors from Obama and Obama received donations for campaigns and hidden personal income. Obama will be indicted for these criminal actions. Obama is scared his actions, lack of action and very questionable associates clearly demonstrate Obama’s true intentions and agendas. Obama is scared that all the negative things Obama has accused Hillary of doing and saying in this campaign are actually the very actions and things Obama has been doing and saying not Hillary. Obama is scared his lack of confidence and inexperience will be completely exposed. Another very important reason Obama is scared and will not debate is Obama can’t remember all the lies he has told during his campaign. Here are 76 lies and counting that Obama has told us at http://www.audacityofhypocrisy.com/?page_id=15 Find more lies told by Obama at http://www.hillaryclinton.com Click on the icon Fact Check. If Obama loses the Democratic Nomination for President his supporters say they will riot in the streets. Obama supporters want to turn the USA into third world countries like Kenya and Zimbabwe. Rioting in the streets because, Obama has been exposed as a spoiled brat; weak, wimpy, arrogant, elitist, inexperienced, corrupt, racist and radical to the extremes are character traits, beliefs and actions of Obama that will cause him to lose this race for the President of the USA. Rioting in the streets is very immature and stupid like Odinga, Obama’s cousin who incited riots and death squads in Kenya. Mugabe did the same in Zimbabwe because he is a mentally challenged immature violent sore loser like Odinga. The USA is a country that provides many freedoms for its people example: right of free speech and the right to vote as we please. Be smart make an informed decision and vote for the most qualified and experienced candidate for President of the USA Hillary Clinton who respects the people, who listens to the people, has compassion for the people of the USA. Hillary will fix the economy and fight for the people of the USA by creating solutions for real changes that benefits all the people of the USA. Hillary will unite the people of the USA, restore the US Constitution and win back the respect of our people and the respect for our government of the USA world wide. Hillary has real substantial solutions for real changes that make sense and will help all of us. Go to Hillary’s web site and explore it http://www.hillaryclinton.com Look at Hillary’s detailed solutions for real changes on the economy, healthcare, education, veterans benefits, Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Read Hillary’s speeches, fact check, attack timeline (of Obama attacks on Hillary), Women for Hillary, and all the other great places on Hillary’s web site to find out more about Hillary so you can make a informed decision and vote for Hillary. While you are visiting Hillary’s web site http://www.hillaryclinton.com make donations to Hillary’s campaign.

This is so sad. Sure, Character counts. We all know Clinton doesn’t have any to speak of, and we’re finding out that Obama’s is rather ordinary rather than sterling. While her lack of character doesn’t count against her (because Hillary supporters are REALLY hoping for four more years of Bill Clinton), Obama’s failure to be an absolute saint does count against him. His failure to only associate with politically approved people all his life also counts against him, although Clinton’s association with the American Muslim Alliance and the Black Panthers doesn’t count against her. Her acceptance of an assortment of funds from the wealthy doesn’t count against her, but should Obama accept funds from the wealthy, it does count against him. The fact is that for people who believe in either one of them, no explanation is necessary. For those who don’t, no explanation is possible.
Posted by: Kaelinda | April 29, 2008, 6:25 am 6:25 am
the problem is Clinton can’t “jump on this one quick” as one angry Hillary supporter threw out there…
the problem is Hillary has more “character” questions than anyone in congress never mind anyone running in this race.
So all you Obama bashers onhere talking about Rev. Wright like it’s actually oBama that said those things…why don’t we look at all the things that Hillary has actually done…
You all want to jump on Obama for somebody else’s statements… someone he explained over and over and through years and years of work on the ground has done the opposite of what this guy has said…
Yet you do not want to talk about all those questions that still follow the Clintons..
so yes let’s talk about this Iran deal. That is what we should be talkign about above everything else…
you know Hillary…policing with Massive retaliation across the middle east and on the us dime…or say ing on vide and audio that she will “obliterate” Iran with Nuclear weapons…
nomatter what the context …the stupidest thing a Presidential candidate has said in eons (including Mike Gravel and Alan Keyes)…
you may have seen the things she said Ahmadenijad has been playing them for every allie and enemy we have on a continuous loop.

Posted by: tony | April 29, 2008, 7:16 am 7:16 am
Tony
Listen
Divisive, yes he said that…that is not a character issue…
Trustworthy he did not say
politics as usual, more of the same
was not about Clinton herself but the p[olicies she was talking about at that time…
and that is the difference…you people can’t tell the difference…
He may come close on sparingloccasions…but Hillary’s entire campaign is attacking his character…that si the only way she can win…and that is the only way she knows how to govern.
and that is one of the ways we will destroy ourselves by continueing to have a government of leaders like we have for the last 15 years.
It needs to change.

From the content of Wrights recent speeches and interviews its VERY CLEAR he was NOT taken out of context. This is the man and the short video clips summed him up perfectly. I do not think for one moment that Obama was unaware of the hate being preached inside his own church for 20 years.

Isn’t it funny McCain has to distant himself from the President Bush. And Obama has to distant himself from his pastor Wright. And the media is talking about the pastor and the Obama. Why does McCain have to distant himself from the President? Maybe it’s because the president has us in war and a recession plus huge unemployment, major health care problems, talk of more war out sourcing jobs that will never come back. Unfair trade practices and much more, i’m tired of typing.

Opponents haven’t talked about policy with Obama, because he hasn’t laid out concrete PLANS of policy to view and discuss. As for character, he brought that topic onto the field by suggesting that Clinton and McCain can’t be trusted due to being in Washington for too long. The Obama campaign has long portrayed Clinton as whiny and downright do anything to get elected. She is fighting hard to have an electable nominee…we don’t need 4 more years of Republican rule. TRUST HILLARY 08!

Okay….Someone needs to line up all the Clinton lies and hypocritical statements made the last 30 years vs. Obama’s. I would guarantee you that they vastly outnumber Obama’s. So, on the question of character my view is that Obama has some and the Clintons have zero. I challenge you Clintonites show one instance where Bill or Hillary has demonstated honest character without first testing political impact.

Senator Obama plays the victim well, but his argument is weak at best. He chose that venue after the PA debate and we all know how well that worked for him.
His character is not only flawed, it is weak. He has repeatedly chosen to use distraction or lash out at his opponent or the press when confronted rather than take a stand, or apologize.
Senator Obama is undeniably a very smart man but he does not seem to have the leadership qualities we need in a President.

LindaJ, Obama plays the victim? Hillary and Bill play the victim to perfection. Victim of those nasty Republican attacks, victim of witch hunts, victim of a cheating husband, victim of media bias, victim of Democrats saying they should quit for the good of the party, etc..Bill and Hillary have made a career of being victims. For the life me I cannot understand Clinton supporters throwing so much mud at their opponents. It sure does not win over Independent voters like myself.
Posted by: indy_voter | April 29, 2008, 10:45 am 10:45 am
One thing confuses me. Hillary says that choosing a pastor is a personnel choice and Obama is flawed because he chose a pastor that has “SAID” some controversial things. But then she states we should judge people by what the DO and not what they SAY. On the other hand, isn’t whom you choose as a spouse or whether or not to stay with a spouse also a personnel choice? I most people can agree that what Bill has “DONE” is beyond reproach. SO why hasn’t Hillary distance herself from Bill? Is she saying that it’s ok to take advantage of people working for you and then lie about as long you can help my political ambitions?

Dear Confused: I don’t really understand how you can confuse Bill and Hillary’s relationship as man and wife with Obama’s relationship with his Pastor. The Clinton relationship is a REAL one, warts and all…besides he isn’t running. Obama’s relationship with his Pastor is an entirely different situation……and the point is this: if Obama sat around that church, and had his daughters sit around that church, it says a great deal about Obama. Read up on the so-called “Blsck Religion” espoused by the Reverend Wrightwrong…….all it does is attempt to keep the spirit of Black/White relations at a very low level of true understanding. If Wrightwrong, according to Obama, served as a mentor for years contributed to the development of this presidential candidate, I will not support or vote for him unless he finally clears this mess up. Character is important to the Presidency.

just joe, If character is important then where is her character in this campaign? It is during this campaign that I became an Anybody But Clinton member. And, by the way I am probably more liberal than most of you Clinonites. What I detest is blatant lies and hypocrisy as exhibited by Hillary and Bill. They are playing you and rest of their supporters just like they played us in 90′s. And, yes I will say “us” as I voted for them then. Never again….And, don’t kid yourself that Bill is not running….It is a two for one package just like last time. So, liberal as I am I will vote for McCain if Democrats continue to be self-destructive and somehow allow Hillary to steal this election. I do not see any difference between the Democratic party as represented by Hillary/Bill from the Republican party. Therefore, I will base my vote on character. McCain has it the Clintons do not.

Please listen to the sermon before you judge. Like Rev Wright said “Just because it’s different does not mean its deficient” The people on here saying he’s the worst and anti-American…well guess what…he’s no more American then you are. So get off your suppose to be American flags. You was never going vote for Obama anyway. The Media play you’ all like sheep…where ever the Sheppard goes the sheep lies…Sad we don’t have our own mind.

Would you please do a story on Obama’s mother? He uses the term “single mother” to describe her; on the Monday night news cast he spoke of discussing food stamps with her. The New York Times published a story in which they reported that she had been a single mother for two years, that after her remarriage she moved to Indonesia with her new husband and young son. While living in Indonesia she earned a doctorate in anthropology from the University of Hawaii. Although Obama was the son of a divorced mother, she appears to have been unmarried for only two years. Also, the Times reported that his grandparents, who were in the Army and then moved to Hawaii, owned a business in Hawaii. Further, it was Obama’s choice to live with his grandparents; his mother wanted him to stay with her in Indonesia. When his mother returned to this country she came to New York and worked at the Ford Foundation as an anthropologist. The New York Times story seems to differ from the portrait of his youth Obama is drawing. Could you investigate to determine which story is most accurate? If the Times account is accurate, Obama’s reinvention of his past would seem to be less than candid. Thank you.

Perfect statement for someone who doesn’t have strong character. Only other problem for Obama is that his policy is weak too.
What a dissapointment.

McCain was NOT a member of the Keating Five. They were all DEMOCRATS. McCain returned all the campaign money received from Keating long before Keating was indicted.

Obama, the spin-meister. strikes again as the demagogue candidate. (Demagogue definition: a wannabe leader who makes use of popular prejudices and false claims and promises in order to gain power) He learned his skill as an 20- year understudy of Rev Wright. Many are growing tired of his tirades. When he complains he can’t manage to change the subject to policy discussion or whatever he says he wants to talk about, he has a problem with either his own or his supporter’s focus. Obama needs a new mentor as he has a steep learning curve in 2008.

How many of you “holier-than-thou” voted for “Dubbya” not once but twice. I’ll bet a lot of you did. I’ll bet you think that he had lots of character, whatever you define that to be. He undoubtedly listened to the likes of Jerry Falwell and those other good so-called christians who preach hate every day against Catholics, Blacks, Jews and everyone else who does not believe or look like them. Now you are going to vote for McCain who wants to “bomb, bomb, bomb Iran, as does Hillary. Tsk, tsk, tsk, that takes lots of character, just like “Dubbya” bombed, bombed, bombed all those innocents in Iraq who never did anything to him – such character!

Obama shouldn’t be scrutinized. He is the messiah. Leave Obama alone. We only should scrutinize Republican presidents.

Gotta love how Obama defenders point to criticism of him Republican “swift boating”. Didn’t occur to you folks that this is the Clinton attack machine at work, huh?

Obama’s “character” is actually pretty good, compared to his opponents. He’s strategically and subtly redirecting the public discourse away from policies and toward character, which is squeaky clean compared to Clinton’s (obvious), and also, perhaps McCain’s.
Obama benefits from an electorate that doesn’t properly consider his stance on important policy issues. His stance on most important issues is essentially socialism at home and demonstrable weakness abroad.

Character Counts!! Swift boating is alive and active; read the other websites to see that the Repubs have already spent over $500,000 . Bart…stop your strange accusations and get the truth…check out the Republican NC TVads& the radio ads in New Mexico…and on and on and on… Obama is a wounded candidate.
Republican sharks are already circling; STEP DOWN BARACK before the DEMS lose to MCCain. Character Counts!and we need someon who knows (W)RIGHT from WRONG!

To suggest that Hillary Clinton has better character than Barack Obama is downright insulting. You’re talking about the woman who had the biggest fundraiser for her 2000 senate bid locked up to keep him from squealing on her, after she renounced him as a criminal, and then asked for more money. Barack Obama is going to get the nomination. Given that most of the country has an unfavorable view of Clinton anyway, it’s probably for the best.

Instead of boiling about the FUD’s from HRC, her media lapdogs, the Reverend, or even the monster Monsanto, I did Just pick up the phone!! and made twelve pretty painless phone calls to North Carolina today. I know I persuaded at least one woman to cast her vote for Obama, fer sure.
FUDs are what the old politicians want for us, it makes it easier for them to control the outcomes. We don’t have to live in the FUD of Fear Uncertianty and Doubt. Millions of Americans feel have NO fear, NO uncertianty, NO doubt that Barack Obama will be the excellent next president of the United States?
I am going to call that nice state again tomorrow and do my small part to shut the corpratocracy down.

Was it not that Obama was knocking Clinton for lack of integrity and character? Or such things do not appply to him because he so unique?

Although I am not a Campaign Manager or
Strategic Planner – I think I have a very sound plan for overcoming all of this
regative publicity surrounding Obama.
I would quickly drop a name of the person that he thinks could be his running mate in November. A great Vice Presidental Choice could shift all of this negativity that has been hounding him for several weeks. I personally think Obama is exactly what this Country has been lacking for many
years. He is real, honest, decent,
brilliant in everything he does. Obviously – he is human & humans do err – and obviously Rev. Wright was a
bad choice. Thanks for the
opportunity to speak my thoughts.
He will always have my vote!
