Clinton Wins Ky; Obama Wins Oregon: What’s Next?

ABC News’ David Chalian Reports: Despite a second overwhelming Kentucky victory in as many weeks and a sizeable loss in Oregon, Sen. Hillary Clinton’s, D-N.Y., faces daunting math against Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for the Democratic nomination.

In the total universe of  delegates, there are 311 outstanding: 217 of those are as of yet uncommitted superdelegates, 94 are thus far unallocated pledged delegates from last night’s contest in OR and the upcoming three contests in Puerto Rico, South Dakota, and Montana.

Clinton needs 84 percent of all the remaining delegates — pledged and superdelegates — to hit the magic number of 2026.

Obama needs only 23 percent of all the remaining delegates to hit the magic number of 2026 — "within reach," indeed.

Thus far, Clinton has netted 154,778 popular votes for the evening. But only 88 percent of precincts have currently reported in Oregon.  There is more vote to count there and likely more opportunity for Obama to make up some of that popular vote ground.

Not counting the rogue contests in Florida and Michigan, Clinton is — as of this writing — trailing Obama in ABC News’ national popular vote count by 424,724 votes.  [If you include Florida, where both candidates were on the ballot, Clinton would still be trailing Obama.  When you add in Michigan (where Obama removed his name from the ballot), Clinton would be roughly 200,000 votes ahead of Obama in the current count.]

In addition to hoping for some huge intervening event that would upend the current trajectory of the contest, Clinton and her campaign are also hoping to push the magic number needed to secure the nomination a bit further from Obama’s reach by arguing for the inclusion of Michigan and Florida in the delegate count.

Should the DNC rules and bylaws committee emerge from its May 31 meeting in Washington, DC with some way to include the Florida and Michigan delegations as part of the nomination process, it is likely that the magic number would become greater than 2,026.

I feel such loss for the women in America who struggled so hard for her as they wanted to see the cause advance. I personally felt that she abused and continues to abuse them with all this sexism crap.
I don’t feel she is acknowledging the fact that it’s not because she’s a woman that America is holding her back.
It’s because she’s a poor choice for the position.

Any other Democratic candidate would resign but not Hillary. There is nothing to be gained by proclaiming dumb uneducated white voters will not vote for a black candidate.

90% blacks have voted for Obama… does that make them racists? What if 90% whites have voted for a white candidate against a black candidate?

People, please, please, let’s reserve such feelings for the real problem, that being McBush, or Bush the Third. He is the one we absolutely must beat in the fall and tearing each other up at this point will only help him win.

is this the type of tactics women want to say they used to win a nomination…
most don’t.

Hillary – the Democratic candidate who got the most popular votes (from Republicans) of all Dems who ever ran for candidacy. Huzzah for Hil.

Go home Madam. You are not Mrs.Thatcher, or Indira Ghandi or Golda Meir. Political ambition does not equate with capability. One hopes that the American public is not subjected to you or your naked desire for power.

The democratic primary continues because in fact despite the mathematics and dogma, the “people” in all our great states have not yet spoken. It would have been easy for Hillary Clinton to roll over for McCain and Obama and allow the peeing contest to begin, however she’s been listening to the voters and their personal problems with this country and the current administration. Hillary Clinton has awakened a lot of us about how crooked the elections really are and what fuels her gas tank to drive to the very end of this process, has been just pure bravery. I must add also that the ballots for the delegates decision on June 3rd are “secret ballots” which gives them the chance to vote for who they truly think can defeat the republican party in November.
I continue to support Hillary all the way! Denise from Philly

truth is: obama cannot reach the magic number. hillary cannot reach the magic number. even if you discard FL and MI (which you should not!) the magic number is 2026 PLEDGED delegates.
to put the superdelagates together with the pledged delegates is just FRAUD!
these people have been moving around from one camp to another for months now.
superdelegates CANNOT pledge and CANNOT vote until the convention.
so, STOP THE CRAPPY “MATH”!
obama has 1639 pledged delegates ONLY. hillary has 1502 ONLY.
to win the race a candidate needs 2026!!
neither obama nor hillary can reach that number by the time this round of popular voting is over.
LET THE PROCESS RUN ITS COURSE!
the democratic process is very well defined: when none of the candidates wins the necessary votes, the next step is that each one of them makes his/her case at the convention!
DEMAND THE MEDIA TELLS THE TRUTH!

Message to Mrs. Clinton
I apologize in advance if this is going to make Obama supporters angry and tear apart wisdoms of political pundits in America. Mrs. Clinton, your strong showing in West Virginia and Kentucky, and in large states like NY, OH, and PA means that millions of Americans will like to see you as the President. Please be there on the ballot in November 2008 – either as a democrat nominee or as an independent.
It is OK if many do not like you. In a three-way race, Obama, McCain and you, one does not need majority. Any candidate with 35-40% will get elected. And it will not be necessarily McCain, as most will think. Joe Lieberman won when he ran independent in spite of losing democratic primary. Party designations are only a tool to be on the ballot. People vote for the candidates. It is not uncommon in many countries to see candidates changing parties or forming new ones when there is popular support. Please do not worry about things like Clinton legacy and so on. That is mostly irrelevant. On behalf of millions of your supporters, I urge you to serve our country by running as independent. Let American people (and not some political pundits/ opinionated columnists) decide in November.
WSJ blog, thank you for the opportunity.

Denise… yeah, elections are crooked. People get to vote for the candidate, and Hillary is not winning? It’s plain disgusting. Let’s change the rules…

Posted by: Veronica Mars | May 21, 2008, 8:34 am 8:34 am

Clinton’s campaign is $30 Million in the hole. Only 11 Million of that is to Hillary herself. Hillary is willing to step on the backs of small business for an astronomically small chance that she will be the next president. I think that people to whom she owes money should go after her personal assets, rather than have her hide behind the corporate veil.

Posted by: Mirza | May 21, 2008, 8:38 am 8:38 am

More people voted for Clinton than obama or anyone else. That is a fact.

Posted by: geevill | May 21, 2008, 8:39 am 8:39 am

Over 17million voters have cast support for Hillary….a MAJOR feat considering ALL of the hills she has had to climb. I know I will be attacked by Obama supporters, but I really don’t care. I, like them, have EVERY right to support Mrs. Clinton because she IS the best candidate to run the country. Hillary 08!

In the beginning every one thought Hillary is going to win the primary. Obama proved that they are wrong. This is going to happen in general election. He is going to win comfortably.
Some people say Obama is black. Unfortunately they are ignorant. He is neither black nor white. He is a super human.

Today’s math questions: Which candidate is leading Sen. Clinton by 26% among Democrats nationwide? Which candidate is leading Sen. McCain (with or without all Clinton voters) by 8%? Which candidate has as of this morning $31 million in debt?

Posted by: Eugene | May 21, 2008, 9:05 am 9:05 am

My mind changed last night as I was listening to Clinton and Obama’s speeches. I saw in Clinton, a candidate with the utmost passion for the American voter…..she was polished, heartfelt, and brilliant in her speech. Obama, I got the feeling he was not being truthful, that he wants the Presidency, but he didn’t seem to have the passion as Hillary does. My wife, who is an Obama supporter, first commented on how “fake” his speech seemed, that he wasn’t sincere. When Hillary spoke, her eyes welled up with tears. She decided that she will vote for Hillary, as well as I will. If Hillary doesn’t win the nomination, we both will vote for McCain. If Hillary were to run as an Independent, she would get our vote. I see this trend continuing as of last night….Obama was not sincere, does not have the passion, drive, or desire. His promises are falling on deaf ears because there is no substance to them. He is a good man, but, he’s not Presidential.

Hillary lost me when I started keeping track of the candidates stated stances on issues. I noted that she’s been on every side of most issues, with her latest position focused on whomever she my be addressing. She ran a very poor campaign, supported then dumped various rules/positions/constituents etc, mismanaged her money and her initial lead. Now she’s playing the racism and sexism card. Carl Rove has nothing on her. She felt anointed and is desperately seeking a magic bullet to use against Obama, regardless of who she may hurt when she shoots it. I have lost all respect for her because she is showing that she only really cares about her own ambitions. Good Riddance

I remember who voted to declare WAR on Iraq, and who said she’d Obliterate Iran, those are not things that are I want to vote for. Obama did not vote for the egregious war, nor does he want to obliterate Iran.
Those are the reasons I choose to vote for Obama.

Posted by: Charlotte | May 21, 2008, 9:45 am 9:45 am

Senator Obama will be the nominee because most of the media love him and have not scrutinized him carefully. But wait until November. If the very junior senator from Illinois cannot carry Democrats and independents in Pennsylvania, W. Virginia, Kentucky, etc. even though he has been declared the victor by party leaders and the media, then his campaign is in trouble.

Posted by: graniteman | May 21, 2008, 9:57 am 9:57 am

Charlotte,
Yes, Senator Clinton had the good sense to say that she would retaliate if Iran attacked our ally, Israel, with nuclear weapons. That’s called deterrence: If you make it clear to an enemy that you are willing to use force if they cross the line, then peace is MORE likely. Senator Obama’s blather about having tea with the Iranian mullahs, Raul Castro, Hugo Chavez and other thugs is making conflict MORE likely. Too bad that Hillary won’t be the nominee. I would have voted for her. Now I will probably vote for John McCain. He’s not perfect but he would be a better president than the very junior senator from Chicago.

Posted by: graniteman | May 21, 2008, 10:03 am 10:03 am

How does the Democratic Party select its nominee? The same way it always has i.e. Delegates. This year the magic number 2026. What rules were in place and agreed to by all candidates when this process started?
So whatever they(agreed upon rules) were, those are the rules this year, SO 2026 DELEGATES ARE THE ONLY METRIC. You can’t change the rules while the game is being played unless you’re a cheat

Ellie,
I support Obama, but I will support whomever wins this election fair and square. I am voting for Democratic Ideals. The Party is about helping one another, that everyone gets a shot at the American Dream, not just the Uber Rich or connected like the Republicans. If you fall into those two categories, then vote Repub.
But my family is not rich or connected. We are middle class and are struggling. I don’t know what we’ll do if things get worse.
I’m voting for Universal Health Care, which I believe is a basic human right.
I’m voting for the rich to pay their fair share and stop living off the middle class and the poor.
I’m voting to have Corporations in this country keep American jobs in AMERICA and not be rewarded for shipping our jobs overseas.
We live in MI, my husband works in the auto industry, I cannot tell you in strong enough terms what NAFTA has done to my state and our jobs.
Ellie, I am not againt HRC, not in the least bit. I am for a quality of life that can be sustained for all Americans.

Posted by: Really? | May 21, 2008, 10:14 am 10:14 am

Ellie,
It’s not NAFTA that has cut jobs in the Michigan auto industry. It’s automation and construction of new auto plants in the southern states of the U.S. Our trade deficit with Canada and Mexico is because we import so much oil and natural gas from them, not cars.

The one thing you don’t take into account is that this is the FIRST TIME we have had an African American running as President.
Take all your maps and projections and throw them out the window. This is a new world and it’s uncharted.
Your figures are so yestarday and this is 2008. I’m sure the Super Delegates are aware of this too.

I look for the HEAT to be on Obama now by the GOP. They have tapes of Michelle Obama trashing America; they have proof of Obama’s shady deals and flip-flopping. I see the GOP saturating the media now with this information. A lot of Obama supporters fail to realize that the media is owned and run by the GOP. The GOP wanted the weaker candidate, Obama to be the nominee. Now, that the DNC has played right into their hands, the war is on. I think the GOP will rip Obama and Michelle to shreads and this will make the SuperD’s take notice and recant their endorsement. As was posted earlier, the SuperD’s can change their minds at any time, and are only to cast their votes that count at the Convention. I look for surprises at this years Convention.

Posted by: david from texas | May 21, 2008, 10:31 am 10:31 am

David,
Yes, the TV networks and newspapers are owned by wealthy people. But many of the media outlets are staffed by journalists and broadcasters with liberal views. The NY Times is a good example of that. And the Wall Street Journal has moved towards the political center since Rupert Murdoch bought the paper. He’s conservative but he also wants to seel more copies of the WSJ. Of the major media, only Fox News has looked critically at Senator Obama. That’s why the GOP has an opportunity to expose his past and his beliefs during the fall campaign.

Posted by: graniteman | May 21, 2008, 10:41 am 10:41 am

If Florida delegates were counted at their full value, Clinton would have won 105 delegates to Obama’s 67 and Edwards’ 13. In Michigan, Clinton would have 73 pledged delegates compared to 55 who were uncommitted and would likely be given to Obama. The nominee would then need 2,209 delegates to win the nomination.
Lets hope the May 31st DNC meeting is fair and unbiased!

Are REALLY supposed to believe that a little known (except to my teenagers) rock band could ever gather a crowd of 72,000?? That is more than the Rolling Stones or U2? Why did they all stay then? A screeching leader singer and sunshine can’t convince 72,000 to stick around.

This is not about race or sex. It’s about who America believes is the most qualified person. Hillary has tried to use every card in the deck and has been behind virtually from the first primary. MI and FL can not and should not count. Obama was not even on the ballot in MI. How in anyone’s world could that count? We don’t trust Hillary because she is using the same old spin tactics with numbers that’s been used in Washington forever. Its time for honesty in Washington. She simply is not honest and America knows it. And by the way, I am “white” and make less than 50k a year and without a degree. Obama’s supporters are not all black the vast majority are white, “working class” AND the educated. Obama’s supporters cross ALL lines and THAT is why he’s winning.

Posted by: Dan | May 21, 2008, 11:54 am 11:54 am

Hillary and her people struggle with simple math… probably why her campaign is over $20 million in debt (you think she can run the economics of this country while she can’t even run her own campaign money?)
Simple math people…. Obama is winning everything, including Popular Vote. No matter what kind of stuff you Hillary people want to make up, SHE IS NOT WINNING the popular vote. I am sick of this argument.
Obama is the candidate. If you want to ruin the country for another 4 years, then go ahead and vote for 4 more years of Bush policies and don’t complain about $5.00 gas and tax cuts for the wealthy while the middle class is stuck in poverty.

Posted by: BK | May 21, 2008, 11:55 am 11:55 am

If Florida and Michigan are not counted, this will infuriate Clinton supporters and cause an even larger divide in the Democratic Party. In order for the Democrats to even have a pretense of “unity”, Florida and Michigan will have to be counted, or you will see millions of Clinton supporters crossing over to McCain (even though they don’t like him), but this will keep Obama from winning the GE.

You DON’T have to take this nonsense from the democrat party nor the media suck-ups. OBAMANATION is an Abomination – I am so happy to see the groundswell for Hillary! So don’t forget about the option to write in your favorite candidate on the ballot in the general election – HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON! She cares about you, the voters.

The Democratic party has been fractured beyond repair(for this election anyway).
The moderate Democrats are rejecting the radical left wing candidate that the media and the DNC have propped up for your viewing pleasure.

Posted by: Mack | May 21, 2008, 12:03 pm 12:03 pm

As an Obama supporter, I would like to say that I respect Hillary, and I think she fought a tough battle and deserves a lot of respect.
That being said, I am quickly losing respect for a lot of Hillary’s supporters, and some of Obama’s supporters as well. The school yard insults that are being flung about on this page are truly disturbing. Even more so when you consider that most of the charges made here are based SOLELY on an individuals highly personal and biased perception of the opposing candidate.
As a result, many of Hillary’s supporters sound like sore losers, and many of Obama’s supporters sound like arrogant winners. Just stop it people! Are you still in 4th grade!?!
The truth is that this race can and will continue until either candidate has achieved the 2025 delegate mark (unless they figure out a way to seat Florida and Michigan, which I think they eventually will). Obama’s team has made it clear they will not ask Hillary to quit (because they have a lot of respect for her as an opponent, despite what many of the Hillary supporters want to believe). Ending her campaign, if it comes to that, is a decision she will have to make when the time is right for her. Until then, the political pundits will say what they will, and yes, there will be those that call on Hillary to quit because Barack’s lead at this point may be insurmountable.
But Hillary should be allowed to run as long as she deems necessary. In fact, if she decides to run as an independent, that would be fine as well. The continuing epic battle between Barack and Hillary would be an historic fight, and poor old McCain would end up being completely marginalized as a result.
On the other hand, what if Barack does end up reaching the 2025 delegate mark, and Hillary decides to end her campaign? If it comes to this, I have a strong feeling that, because she is a classy and respectable person, she will throw her support behind Obama and then request that her supporters also support Barack.
So, to all of the Obama “haters” out there, if it comes to that, what will you do? Will you continue to be a sore loser and vote for McCain, despite the fact that it is the worst thing you could do for this country at this time? Despite the fact that Obama won, not because of racism, or sexism, but because he is a strong candidate who won fairly by running a better organized campaign than his strong and formidable opponent? Possibly even despite the fact that your own candidate will in all likelyhood ask you to support him?
Can we afford, as a country, to risk another Bush light administration under John McCain simply because of a bunch of bruised egos?

Posted by: Geekmoid | May 21, 2008, 12:05 pm 12:05 pm

Bush, Clinton, Bush…Clinton again? You gotta’ be kidding me! George Washington and Thomas Jefferson are probably rolling over in their graves over that foolishness!

EXCELLENT POST, YAVO LEM! There are many, MANY Hillary supporters and Independents that feel the way you do. I see a LOT of voters getting on board to keep Obama out of the White House! I can’t wait to see the MUD the GOP has on him and are just licking their chops to release to the media. Also, if you’ve noticed, it seems the media is ALREADY turning on Obama when it comes to the GOP. I LOVE IT!

Posted by: david from texas | May 21, 2008, 12:08 pm 12:08 pm

It is Hillary’s job to unite her supporters behind Obama. If he does not win the GE it will be because of the unnecessary prolonged process due to Hillary’s unwillingness to admit she lost and due to her campaign tactics. The math was close to impossible for her months ago and she decided to attempt to destroy Obama instead of unite the party for the betterment of America. This was a very poor decision on her part that is only another indication of her decision making process. Had she not gone down the path of destruction she may have maintained credibility and most likely would have been a strong candidate for VP. I would have voted for the “dream ticket” however now I don’t know if I can vote for her on any ticket. She considers Hillary’s wants and only what Hillary wants which could be difficult for Obama to work with in the White House. Obama will not let the VP control his decisions like Bush has let Cheney.

1.Shes a lair
2She has no experiance but her husband does
3. She wants to obliterate a whole culture
4. Her heath care plan is BS
5. More of the same politics
6. Some of us belive she only cares about herself and her quest for power
7. She used to defend radicals
8. Shes two faced
9. Likes to take money from shady people too
10. She is a true elitist by every definition of the word
See i got a list too.

Mike Huckabee on Rev. Jeremiah Wright, March 19, 2008
“And one other thing I think we’ve got to remember: As easy as it is for those of us who are white to look back and say, “That’s a terrible statement,” I grew up in a very segregated South, and I think that you have to cut some slack. And I’m going to be probably the only conservative in America who’s going to say something like this, but I’m just telling you: We’ve got to cut some slack to people who grew up being called names, being told, “You have to sit in the balcony when you go to the movie. You have to go to the back door to go into the restaurant. And you can’t sit out there with everyone else. There’s a separate waiting room in the doctor’s office. Here’s where you sit on the bus.” And you know what? Sometimes people do have a chip on their shoulder and resentment. And you have to just say, I probably would too. I probably would too. In fact, I may have had a more, more of a chip on my shoulder had it been me.” – Mike Huckabee

Sen. Clinton has handled herself with grace and class without being condescening to voters. She has proven both how tough and how intelligent she is. I also urge her to run as an independent. Otherwise I will vote for a Republican (gag!) for the first time in my life. If the DNC blunders and nominates this far-left, theory-only, bitter candidate, I will consider myself a newly minted Independent. And what the heck is Obama doing in Florida? He didn’t want to count our votes in January, but he does in Nov…? Dude, you already lost Florida!

Hillary most likely will ask her supporters to back Obama, but we know this is not what is in her heart. She fought hard for this nomination, against a corrupt DNC, media, and SuperDelegates. She knows she has the passion of each of her supporters backing her and WE WILL NEVER recant our support of her and vote for her rival Obama. Sorry, it will be another 4 years of GOP rule. Blame this on the DNC, news media, and Obama himself!

hillary is bad for the democratic party – and bad for woman. just because she “works hard” doesn’t mean she is entitled to the office of the presidency of the united states – as it seems is her only arguemnet. there is a democratic process – to which she is a part of. and she is not the choice of that process.
and even more imortantly, just because hillary clinton does not achieve her goal after “working hard” is not proof that the process is sexist or corrupt – as she wants you to believe. this is classic clinton – if you lose – someone must be cheating or unenlightened (classic democratic logic).
don’t forget – this is the same women who called the lewinsky scandel a “right wing conspiracy.”
now that she is not going to be the apparent democratic candidate – so she reaches into her bag of tricks and pulls out a new conspiracy theory – this time it is due to a male conspiracy.
so – she has now accused all republicans, and all males, and all blacks of being part of the conspiracy against her. it seems that in time – if you aren’t on that list – you will be – at least by past performance.
hillary – you need to go because america is tired of your logic and your baseless prejudiced point of view.
america does not want a president who when the chips are down, and the facts are not in their favor, blames everyone around them – instead of listening and dealing with those facts – and leading. crying (literally) and complaining about losing and making false allegations to cover up your short comings of achieving your personal goal is not appealing – and especially not appealing for the presidential of the united states. and that is why in the end you are not the candidate.
maybe the process is not sexist, or corrupt, or racist – maybe – just maybe it is fair – and you are wrong. and you lost fair and square. too much for you to consider – i know. you are tired. go home and cry and think of someone else to blame.
goodbye hillary.

Average Joe comments is right. Neither Obama nor Clinton can reached the 2026 “pledged delegates” to secure the nomination. The Superdelgate tally are still “unpledged” and not yet official count at this stage. They can still flip flop their preference until the convention in August.
If the GOP slime machines decided to release their attacks before the August convention, it will be Bye Bye Obama and Hillary will be the nominee. Keep this message in mind so that you will not be surprised when that time come.

That’s right, the voters of Florida and Michigan have been disenfranchised by Howard Dean and the DNC. Sure, it was their elected officials that put the voters in that predicament, but the voters are totally innocent of any wrongdoing except for voting idiots into office. THEY ARE INDEED DISENFRANCHISED. The delegates from Florida and Michigan need to be counted!!! You imbiciles can’t take American’s votes away from them. In his victory speech (in Iowa NOT Oregon) last night Mr Obama did the following:
1. Change, blah blah blah, change
2. Eloquently referred to Mrs. Clinton as a formidable opponent (agreed) and then eloquently slammed HER for dragging out the race.
Clinton supporters, this is a slam against YOU because YOU want her to remain in the race during the nomination process.
3. Alleged that Mr. McCain wants to keep the Bush tax cuts for “the wealthy”. FALSE. Mr. McCain wants to keep the Bush tax cuts for everyone who benefited from them, which is EVERYONE.
I couldn’t listen to any more of the speech after his lies and subtle slam against Mrs. Clinton. I am no fan of Clinton or McCain, but Obama is not practicing what he preaches on campaign tactics and TACT and so therefore is a hypocrite, as are they all.

OK, all of the comments about Barack somehow being personally responsible for Michigan and Florida’s delegates not being seated need to stop because this is pure, unadulterated B.S.
The truth is Hillary ALSO AGREED to the DNC rules that caused Michigan and Florida to be penalized for moving their primary dates. Call it a miscalculation on her part, or lack of foresight, whatever, she did not think she would need those votes to win at the time she agreed to the rules.
So stop blaming Barack! Hillary is every bit as culpable, and if you want to blame someone, you have to include her too!!

Really? Wrote:
‘m voting for Universal Health Care, which I believe is a basic human right.
My 2 cents:
1. Mrs. Clinton’s plan is I think closer to being “universal” that Mr. Obama’s plan
2. NAFTA is not responsible for MI’s trouble. I was born and raised there so I am qualified to speak on the situation: Michigan has bled jobs for DECADES, not just since NAFTA. Why could that be?
A business-unfriendly atmosphere (Are you aware of the Japanese company factories across the border in Indiana?)
Technological innovation making human labor obsolete.
If your husband can’t find work then re-train or move. I did, so have lots of other people.
3. What, in your mind, is “fair” share? Do you think tax legislation uses phrases like this? NO. Put a number on it.
4. As for jobs going overseas. Companies aren’t doing anything that consumers don’t do when they go out and buy something: They look for the place that stretches their dollar the farthest.
How do we prevent companies from leaving? Pass a law prohibiting them from doing so? Well, my answer: They can just close up shop and re-open somewhere else and choose NOT to do business here.
Then do we pass a law preventing them from closing up shop? What happens when that business can no longer pay the price of doing business? How will workers get paid?
I suggest you and others with similar ideologies go and read an economics book. You might actually learn how the world REALLY works.

Here’s some math to digest. Tally up the electoral college votes associated with each state that the candidates have ‘won’. Guess what? Hillary leads Obama 264 to 217. Only 270 is needed to be elected ‘president’ in the fall. That’s not even including Michigan or Florida. Karl Rove has even alluded to this electoral college factor as to why Hillary is a stronger candidate.

As a Democrat from Florida I am rally ###### for the raw deal that we got from the Howard “The Scream” Dean. First, it was the GOP controlled legislature who approved this advancing of the primary date. The Democrats have no control on that one. So why are we being punished? Secondly, a lot of states like Nevada, Illinois, California also advanced their primary dates, why do they allowed that? Are these states more important that’s why they got preferential treatment?
Until the DNC count my vote , I will be bitter and will vote for McCain in November. By the way, where’s Al Gore and his “Make Every Vote Count” batttlecry?

“None of the Above,” I suggest you get off the highhorse and talk to people, not at them. I know of no one who claims Obama voted against the war authorization but not only did he oppose it before the vote when it wasn’t politically popular to do so, he then went on to lay out what an invasion of Iraq might mean. And those awful predictions unfortunately came true much to the surprise of our current administration. Also, I agree with whoever it is that you are lambasting that the US government should not be in the business of offering incentives to companies to move jobs outside of our borders. Stop offering subsidies and tax breaks for these moves and rather offer incentives for companies to invest here within our country. Further, I don’t have to be an expert and know the specifics of an argument to know it is valid. I know next to nothing about our nuclear weapon stockpile and that of countries around the world and I also no nothing about nonproliferation treaties but I can say with certainty that reducing the amount of nuclear weapons on this planet should not only be a goal but an imperative for the next president. You don’t have to be an expert to see the wisdom of an argument.

What have we learned from this year’s primary races?
1. It’s not necessarily a good thing to fight to be first on the ballot. Even without the whole MI/FL question, some of those early states who were hardly noticed would have played a much bigger role in early June — California, for example, which would likely be favoring Obama if the vote were today.
2. DON’T take your name off the ballot anywhere, especially if you’re running against a Clinton!
3. Don’t run your campaign assuming you are going to take the nomination by Super Tuesday. The big money you spend early on is going to come back to bite you as the campaign drags on into May and June and you find yourself deeply in debt.
4. Find a campaign message and stick to it. If your campaign can’t find its voice, it won’t get the votes!
5. If you have people around you who might be campaign liabilities, deal with them early on. Don’t wait for them to hit You-Tube or Faux News.
Obama 2008 — Yes, WE CAN!!!

Noneoftheabove08:
So, concerning the outsourcing of jobs in the U.S., what do you propose to do? Nothing? Do you realize that the types of jobs being outsourced now are no longer confined to just blue collar labor, but are leaching into the tech zone? We are losing tens of thousands of high paying technical and engineering positions to overseas facilities each year. It is getting harder and harder to find those good wage positions that can support a middle class family, and you are advocating the status quo? Just throw your hands up in the air and say “oh well” huh?
With that kind of attitude, it won’t take much longer for the middle class to completely disappear. Oh, and America’s prowess as an economic and military superpower? That will be history too. If we ship all of our decent wage paying labor, high tech and engineering positions overseas, how is the U.S. going to be able to compete? As a service economy? Give me a break!
Without companies fostering innovation and technology inside the U.S., we will quickly lose our edge, not just economically, but also militarily as well because the Pentagon contracts with private sector companies for it’s military technology. If these companies no longer foster U.S. talent, and most of the talent is overseas, how do you expect us to maintain a military technology advantage when all of that technology is being created outside the U.S.?
Just some food for thought. But you can continue your policy of wearing blinders, doing nothing and hoping that everything will be O.K.

Posted by: Geekmoid | May 21, 2008, 1:17 pm 1:17 pm

Randy, I may be wrong but I think the DNC moved Nevada forward so they could have the 4 beginning contests represent the various geographic and to some extent ethnic regions of the country. Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina. I’m guessing after that it was a free-for-all. I’ll agree that Howard Dean and whoever made the decision to completely leave out Florida and Michigan made a ridiculous mistake. Also, it’s important to note that ALL of the candidates signed on to the plan and agreed. But this election is way too important to vote out of bitterness. If you agree with John McCain’s positions then by all means vote for him. But I am voting for Obama or Clinton as the regular citizens of this country cannot take another 4 years of policies that continue this war with no accountability by the Iraqi leaders, a pissing match with Iran, no change in tax policy towards the uber-rich while our national debt climbs past $9 trillion, no passage of the new GI Bill, and no change in the healthcare policy. Due to his history with cancer, John McCain couldn’t even get healthcare under his own plan or would be dropped from coverage!

Yes, it’s now beginning to be a bit irritating the way Bill and Hillary behave like they are entitled to the Democratic nomination by virtue of inevitability or fate or something like that. Hillary could have made an excellent presidential candidate for the Democratic ticket. But that was before the Obama phenomenon. In life, it happens that way sometimes. All your lucky stars seem perfectly aligned, except for one. And then all your dreams come crushing down to earth. Hillary should just accept her misfortune instead of trying to re-write the rules.

I do not like her like I once did since she is acting the whimpy, whiny fool that she is. Sorry. Change your tune,or get left behind with Grandpa McCain.

I just cannot get over the number of people who post that Florida and Michigan votes should be counted as cast. Come on, people, would you be saying the same thing if Hillary’s name wasn’t on the Michigan ballot? She’s hoodwinked the lot of you into believing that Obama is preventing your votes from counting, when it’s no more his fault than hers. Try to get past the understandably passionate support you have for your candidate and look at the issue with unbiased eyes–those elections simply were NOT FAIR as they stood! I’m all for everyone’s voice being heard, but that wasn’t the case in the elections that took place; many people stayed home, as they were told their votes wouldn’t count or voted in the Republican primary for the same reason. I don’t think anyone informed them that they should go ahead and vote anyway “just in case.” I hope the constituents in Florida and Michigan will vote OUT the people in their state governments who put them into this position in the first place!! Try to see this from all sides, though. Honestly, if it was Obama or another candidate whose name was the only one on the ballot rather than your chosen candidate, would you still consider Michigan’s election a fair one?

OBAMA/POWELL really? Wow. Now that would be a true dream ticket for America. Unfortunately I believe there are too many people that would vote against them simply because of race. Too bad though. I could only imagine the good things that could come from these two quality people working together in the White House.

One can only hope what is next is a nice strong shove by the DNC out the door on 5-31-08.
Time to stop letting the little princess push her bull. They need to treat her like they would treat anyone else. I am sick of this tiptoeing around her.

Posted by: Joannie | May 21, 2008, 2:30 pm 2:30 pm

Hillary’s math
Caucus states don’t count
1) Move the bar for the total number delegates needed to win
2) Count MI (Obama was not on the ballot!)
3) Count FL (Should have challenged their local Gov. on the voting date)
Even IF she was able to sway the DNC by extortion she could NEVER beat McCain. The Republicans would come out of the woodwork to keep the Clintons out of the White House. They despise the Clintons because Bill was a better President than either GHB or GWB and the world knows it! Hillary is not Bill but her so called “experience” all revolves around his Presidency.

Obama Feeling Financial Woes:
The Democratic presidential primary is starting to take a financial toll on Barack Obama, the latest fundraising numbers show. The Obama campaign spent more than it raised in April, a first in 2008, as it sought to knock off New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton by pouring money into the Pennsylvania, Indiana and North Carolina primaries.
Presumed Republican presidential nominee John McCain, meanwhile, had his best fundraising month yet, and dumped the majority of his receipts into his fattening bank account.
He’s outspent Hillary 2 to 1, 3 to 1, and sometimes 4 to 1 but can’t seem to beat her. Now, because of his spending, he’s feeling the financial crunch. However, McCain has had the biggest month so far in accumulating money….hmmmm…….the pressure is on, Obama!

Posted by: david from texas | May 21, 2008, 2:43 pm 2:43 pm

The number would be greater than 2026 but it won’t be 2209.
I am convinced Hillary will be hanging off the stage at the inauguration demanding that whomever is standing there get off her stage.
It is her right, her destiny to be president and no one will deny her.
I wonder why she has so many followers. Clearly this woman does not believe in democracy and mentally unhinged.

Six months ago no one would have thought that it would have ended up like this.
Everyone thought the Democrats would be in the White House Next year. Even the Republicans thought they would lose.
Now we have handed it to them.
Either way we will lose.
We have divided our party.
Game over. An old man will be in the White House next year.
Im not going to point a finger at Hillary and say it’s her fault. But that won’t change the fact that it is.

David from Texas–
Obama has $37 million dollars in the bank right now.
Don’t cherry pick the article.
He had money left over from March. Yes he spent more than he brought in in April, but he could afford to because he was in the black coming into April.
Hillary on the other hand, not so much. Her bank account is nothing but red. She raises $22 million in April but is still nearly $10 million in debt by the end of the month? That is some lousy economic strategy.
John McCain—He raised $18 million. Not all that impressive when Obama raised $31.

It’s amazing that these rural white people whould rather endure economic loss based on the issue of a person’s skin color. GOD created these people, not man. I can’t understand the hate. It is a sad day in America, other countries are watching us. It seems that what Rev. Wright said, is somewhat true. Are these people considered Christians. How will they be able to stand before GOD with this attitude. If they don’t vote for Sen. Obama policies, that’s okay, but because of race. I know they can’t be Christians, how can they knee to pray before GOD holding hatred in their hearts for other people that GOD created. It’s a sad day in America, I am truly embarassed, how can Sen. Clinton be proud of this. For her to gloat about this. I had a alot of respect for her before this campaign, but now I couldn’t vote for her. She might be a fighter, but she is no true leader.

Irma stated:
Oh, but they’ll screw the voters who supported this party long before Obama waltzed his brass knuckle “Change” in politics self into the party.
Thats ok, Irma, it’ll come back to haunt them in January 09 when they have to address President John McCain! The DNC and the SuperD’s have destroyed the Democratic party, not Clinton or Obama. Dean, Pelosi, Kennedy, and Kerry did this to our party and now, we, the voters are having to deal with it. I think the SuperD’s are a joke, all of them. They are people just like you and me. I think ALL of them, SuperD’s and the DNC can go to H**l, they have royally screwed up this time. The party won’t be healed by November, maybe not even for the 2012 election. It seems they have set the Old Dems against the new faction Dems. The freaking GOP is loving this! They WERE afraid last summer of this election, but not anymore. They have won it already, McCain, with his old self, will be the next President. I don’t blame Hillary, Barack, or the voters. It because of the stupid DNC, Dean, Pelosi, Kennedy, and Kerry!

David from Texas–
I read the article. You are misrepresenting it.
Obama had $37 million in the bank at the beginning of May.
You make it sound like he was in debt. That is untrue, re read the article.
True he spent more than he raised in April, BUT he had money coming into April to add to the $31 mil he raised in April.
So to say he was in debt at the end of April is a flat out lie.

Posted by: Mindy | May 21, 2008, 3:04 pm 3:04 pm

To the super delegates, we know who you are , we have a list of names. come November you will be accountable. Letting Obama be the nominee of math instead of the nominee of sensibility. Forward to Election Day 08, can you imagine backpedaling when it comes to – explaining how Obama- loses key states? Ohio, Michigan ,Pennsylvania, Florida and West Virginia. What will the pundits say? He lost them because of the math, or blame once again Hillary. Can’t blame her she won those states in the primaries, Obama did not.

Posted by: jp,michigan | May 21, 2008, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm

I think what bothers you Mindy is seeing in print that your “golden” boy, Obama, is beginning to have difficulties. This is NOTHING compared to the onslaught of the GOP after the convention, that is, if he is the nominee. If you plan on supporting him, you’re gonna have to “toughen up”.

Posted by: david in texas | May 21, 2008, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm

The psychology has turned completely for Clinton.
Historically if a candidate has taken a fight to the convention floor, the party has lost that election cycle.
However, if Hillary does take it to the floor, it may not have the same effect this time. Obama is already campaigning as if it were the GE, he isn’t waiting until September. He should have plenty of money, 200,000 NEW donors in April is impressive. No one has ever raised this kind of money before, so the prior election cycles may not be relevant.
Basically Hillary will still be fighting the primary while everyone else has pivoted to the general.
The party is not going to stop in the middle of what every one perceives to be the general already in progress. This is why she was so desperate that Obama not announce victory yesterday.
Unfortunately for her, it was too late anyway. The psychology of the country has already moved into the general. Even in Kentucky 54% of the voters said they believed Obama would be the eventual nominee.

Posted by: THE REALITY | May 21, 2008, 3:11 pm 3:11 pm

Time for some tough love. This thing is done, wrapped up, finished. Everyone agreed last Fall as to the rules and everyone knows that you win by collecting delegates. Everyone knows that all candidates agreed to exclude FL and MI. Eveyone agreed to the same caucus and primary rules. Barack Obama has won. I respect Senator Clinton and my vote was not used against her, I simply chose another candidate that I agreed with more. And so did enough other people that he will win this nomination. You can complain all you want, move the goal posts, review and discredit things you previously agreed with, talk about money, superdelegates, the DNC, Howard Dean, and whatever else you want but facts are facts and this race is finished. I say this not to put it in anybody’s face but to simply say that continuing this discussion like something may change at this point in time is pointless. Yes there is racism and yes there is sexism but neither made the difference. Yes she won by a landslide in Kentucky but she cannot and will not catch up. It is over.

David in Texas–
You are so right the $18 million that McCain raised is amazing compared to the $31 million that Obama raised.
Obama had 200,000 NEW donors who can be tapped in to until they reach the max of $2300.
McCain can’t even come close to the fund raising of Obama. He knows it and has even said so himself.
And so what that he outspent Clinton. Clinton has something he doesn’t have. NAME RECOGNITION. You cannot underestimate the value of her name. He had to spend that money just to get his name out there to people. He has to introduce himself, they already know Hillary Clinton.
Done.

Posted by: Mindy | May 21, 2008, 3:25 pm 3:25 pm

The VAST MAJORITY of Obama’s money comes from small donors online. The regular people that want to have a say in how our country is run this time. Obama’s money comes from MILLIONS of people of all walks of life.

Posted by: Dan | May 21, 2008, 3:28 pm 3:28 pm

how can you people talk about being fair and unbiased. HRC agreeded to not campaign in FL or MI, like the other candidates did. An unknown # of people did not vote because they knew their votes wouldn’t count. Barack took his name off the ballot in MI, your candidate said MI votes don’t count. Now HRC cares about every vote counting because she’s trailing BHO. This flip flopper is who you want to lead the country?! A fiscally irresponsible, unattentive to details, owner of bad judgement and bad management skills, crocadile tears crying, user of all to get what she and her husband wants!!!
PLEASE, you’ve fallen for the bush tactic that she has embraced, remember propaganda, tell them what you want them to believe over and over and over, pretty soon they’ll start to believe.
Question, if she wants every vote to count, why shouldn’t caucus votes count?

Asian American2–
So you are saying that you will only vote if the person you vote for wins?
I know this is very hard for Hillary’s supporters to grasp, but she had a copy of the rules for the primary before the primary started. She agreed to the rules of the primary before the primary started.
She is losing based on the rules that she agreed to before the process.
If she did not like the rules, why did she do nothing to change them BEFORE the primary season began?
I will answer my own question, because she just knew she, with her Clinton brand name, was going to win.
She knew the rules, she played the game wrong and now she loses.
So explain to me how in the real world any of us could get away with changing the rules at the end of the game? Your boss let you do that? Your wife? The government?
It’s really time for people to stop complaining about what is and is not fair. This is totally fair, she KNEW the rules BEFORE the primary started.

Have never voted republican in my life. I have no problem with a black president. Obama is not it. I have no problem with a woman president. I have little or no problem with McClain. When we made our first attempt at a woman vice president, Ferraro was not it. We bit the bullet and waited till we had someone better. That is what Obama supporters should do. No matter who gets in we are not going to suddenly become a secure and strong nation. We are a long way from that. We are not going to magically bring all the troups home. i was adamantly against the war in Iraq. But they are there and we cannot now just simply pull out as Obama says he will do. that alone should show his inability to run a country. Whoever gets in i should hope that congress will hold them at bay on the things that should not happen. I personally will either vote write in for Hillary or for McClain. At least he is not imature and naive. So vote for who you want as i will and grow up.

Posted by: david in texas | May 21, 2008, 4:00 pm 4:00 pm

Mary,
I understand your position. I don’t believe everyone who refuses to vote for Obama is a racist. I think there is a very small percentage of the population voting based on that. I would think a similar percentage wouldn’t vote for a woman.
But, I disagree with you about Obama. Not trying to convince you of anything just so you know.
I personally think his idea of how to handle other nations is the correct one. John McCain and George Bush’s way, and frankly Hillary’s way, has not worked. We are not safer today than we were 8 years ago.
Will Obama magically bring the troops home all at once. No. He never said he would. He said he would withdraw responsibly.
My point really is that fine you don’t agree with Obama’s policy, you don’t think he is “ready” whatever that means. But, just because some of us do believe he is ready, does not make us naive or stupid.
I respect your opinion and absolutely respect your right to have it.
This whole racism/sexism thing has gotten way more press than it deserves. Frankly it is a tiny percentage of the vote.
Obama screwed up. He should have gone to West Virginia and Kentucky. I have lived in a small state that no one cared about. They just assumed we would vote a certain way and never did anything to get our vote. It is insulting. I don’t blame them for not voting for him. Hillary put a lot of work into those two states and she earned her victory.
I can be objective about Obama. No kool-aid and frankly I am sick of the ridiculous assertion that we are all star struck zombies.
All of the candidates are flawed, I guess that goes with being human. It would be nice if people could have a grown up conversation resembling your post rather than the name calling that usually goes on in here.

Posted by: Lela | May 21, 2008, 4:13 pm 4:13 pm

As I stated in my earlier post, this Democratic race is over. I’m not trying to be mean, it’s just the truth. In 2000 Bill Bradley ran against Al Gore for the nomination. Imagine that some of Bradley’s supporters were so turned off by losing the race that they voted for Bush in the general election. The rest, unfortunately, is history. You would send both candidates back to Congress where everyday they will have to fight for the American people against the Republican administration for which you voted. If you care AT ALL about Senator Clinton’s fight, you will vote with her in the Fall for Barack Obama. Or you can choose Bush Lite and get none of the legislation and changes she cares about and wants for the people of this country.

David in Texas – I understand where you are coming from and I thank you for it. I still think that my cause all these years are all a waste.
Process – it is not only because of the Hillary and Obama issue. It is just the whole process. Is it the VOTERS of Michigan and Florida’s fault that this is happening right now? NO. Do you even think for a minute that what you and I think will matter on what they will do with those delegates in FL and MI? Dream on. The MSM have not done their job. They have not fully vetted Obama. I also voted for Reid and what is he doing right now. The delegate allocation of DNC is so mind boggling. I don’t even understand it myself. Yes as you would probably say I am one of the stupid, idiot, uneducated Hillary supporter. That’s okay. I don’t have to have a masters degree to know that Hillary might lie sometimes but Obama himself is just a lie.

After watching these senarios over the last few weeks, I honestly believe that Bill Clinton is keeping Hillary in the primary to ruin her, he has such an ego that he would rather see her fail than surpass what he accomplished. She is too smart of a women to stay in a political race when everyone agrees the numbers just don’t add up. She signed in October a proposal that if Michigan and Florida moved up their primaries that they shouldn’t count. Now, since Super Tuesday occurred, she is looking at any opportunity to steal this nomination from a MAN(not black or white) but a man, who has put excitement back in America’s chances, Hillary needs to show some class and step aside, and she better pay closer to what Bill is doing to her political career.

As a Hillary Democrat, I expect to see Hillary as the party’s nominee who we elect in November as the first Woman President of the United States of America. We appreciate your fortitude in the face of the onslaught from the party leadership, the super delegates, and the extreme arrogance of your opponent. Speaking of your opponent, he disses Small-Town America, rual America, and ignores the white working class of West Virginia and throughout this Nation. His wife is only now proud of America, yet both went to the best schools and are millionaires accoring to reports. Hillary, stay strong. Would running as an independent be so wrong?

Posted by: benvictor | May 21, 2008, 6:02 pm 6:02 pm

Sorry, but those numbers are wrong. You aren’t taking the caucus states into account. There is no real popular vote total there, and Obama nearly swept them. She lost, it’s done, and she’s making all of us women look bad by trying to manipulate that reality.

David, er Carpe, you were talking about money. I wonder, if Hillary is so far in debt, who does she owe that money to? Are small business owners suffering because she’s not paying her bills? Bill Clinton left us with money in the bank. George Bush squandered it all and left us with an enormous deficit. Seems to me like Hillary is doing that kind of deficit spending herself.

Hillary is not ahead in popular vote — Michigan was a sham election, where most Democratic candidates were not on the ballot (and write-ins *were not permitted*). And several of the caucus states that Obama easily won did not keep individual vote talleys.
Another bunch of lies from the Hillary camp.

Hello. Being black has nothing to do with my decision NOT to vote for obama. He promises lots of things, talks about change, we have no reason to believe that he will do anything at all. He blathers and hollers like a black minister and I must say I don’t like that type of presentation. He hems and haws and doesn’t say much of anything substantial. Everybody knows that he is not going to change ANYTHING about the way WASHINGTON does business, so that is just the usual lie that all politicians promise. His voting record in the senate is the pitts, he has no experience, and generally lacks substance. He whines about everything and refuses to debate Hillary again — he must be afraid. He refused to encourage FL and MI to have a revote, so he must be afraid of that too. It is soooo critical to have a leader that KNOWS what to do and how to get it done — and Hillary Clinton remains the better choice without a doubt. Obama will NEVER be elected as far a I can see. We have had 8 really bad years and I have survived OK — I can do another 4 if I have to. And like obama said, McCain isn’t as bad as Bush.

Somebody has to wake up Hillary that she is behind by almost 160 pledged delegates & more than half millions popular votes not including the caucuses.
Newsweek, ABC news and all major news agencies agree that there is no way she can win.
She has a slight chance of winning in popular votes & not delegates, only if Obama is given zero popular votes in MI & FL &, she gets it all.
It should not happen because it is a fair game and not based on other factors.
She is way behind.
She is not accepting the reality.
Sooner or late she will have to accept the results.
The rules agreed upon & signed ahead of the primaries must stay the same for all candidates and, not change for one, only because the candidates is losing.

It is quite strange why so many Clinton supporters would want to vote for Mc Cain if Hillary does not win the nomination. Just think about it, would Hillary approve of her supporters voting for Mc Cain. That would really be against all that she stands for and is fighting for. The main motive of her campaign IS to become the democratic nominee and defeat Mc. Cain.
I think that Hillary has had her share of lies and deception too. For example, she never took cover from sniper fire in the Balkans. She voted for disenfranchising Florida and Michigan voters as did Obama. Now isn’t her rhetoric about counting these states a clear sign that she is a sore loser and cares only about herself. Isn’t this all about settling her personal scores rather than fighting for the American people. Does she really care about you at all? Would she had asked for the Florida and Michigan delegates to be reseated had she been in Obama’s place? Probably not. I believe every one will understand all these things in due course of time. I know Obama is not perfect, but at least, he is better than Goerge Bush….

Posted by: dave | May 22, 2008, 12:51 am 12:51 am

I am wondering why Senator Clinton if she truly felt that there was some sort of impropriety, did not lodge a complaint about Florida and Michigan at the beginning of this campaign, when she, and all the other Democratic hopefuls, signed the pledge that acknowledged the fact that these two states had broken party rules? It seemes to me , and according to the history of the behavior, that this did not become an issue until she was behind. Not one Clinton supporter can explain that to me. Perhaps it is because there is only one plausible explanation…UNDERESTIMATION and ENTITLEMENT. This was supposed to be , according to her, as evidenced in one of her earliest ads where she referred to herself as the “presumptive nominee.” No black man was ever supposed to win by such an overwhelming margin in the great state of IOWA. Her assumption was her undoing. The latent paternalistic attitude of the Clinton years, has surfaced , and what we have witnessed in these past months, the comments by both Senator Clinton and President Clinton speak to that. It is mind-boggling that intelligent or street smart or people that have good common sense could equate being “really proud” for that first time with “trashing” this country. It is sad and disturbing that a sitting president would take his own, personal agenda and air it in what was supposed to be the celebration of another country’s statehood. It is further distressing that an American president hopeful would joke about a behavior that has bleminished the history of this country… the writers’ strike is over. The fact that, in this ecconomy, we all are feeling the stress and pain of inflated prices at the pump, a rapid increase in umemployment, a decaying mental health system, a lack of health care , foreclosures, an absence of suitable accomodations for our military, an outrageous increase in food costs, a flawed and a failing educational system. Yet, the fact that we reduce the selection of the next leader of our country to a “battle” between personality differences, gender, race, religion, a like or dislike of a person’s spouse, speaks to a blantant disregard for the solemnity and awesome privilege that we have as Americans. We take our rights for granted. The rest of the world is waiting for us to destroy each other…they are counting on it and we are doing just that. Some example we are…just look at the attitudes exemplified in these blogs. We name-call, we use hasty generalizations to justifiy our beliefs, we pout and threaten to “take our marbles and go home” because we are not getting our way, we resort to using distorted facts, we are disrepectful of differences of opinion, and we abuse the right we have to vote by threatening not to. People have died, and are dying to secure that right. We spit on them and on their ultimate sacrifice…It follows that our young people have so little regard for us and for each other. Children mimic what they see and they repeat what they hear.
Not one of these candidates is perfect. They are all human and as such are prone to error. They are diverse, as diverse as is this great country of ours…and she is great inspite of and dispite all her flaws. They may differ in age, sex, race, life experiences and ideology but they have important similarities. They are all Americans; they have guts and a kind of intestinal fortitude, and they all, without exception, love this country. They have courage…McCain was a POW… Clinton a first lady and Obama a black man who chose public service over the private sector. Each one has strenghts and each one has weaknesses and they all deserve thoughtful consideration instead of whimsey. They all want to be president, and we all have the unique opportunity to have a part in making that selection. Most important, we have the power to hold them accountable IF we do not sink into apathy or give in to cynicism. It is our future and the future of our children, and of their children that is at stake here. Vote! and if you don’t vote, don’t complain. If you don’t like who is running, then next time, run yourself. Subject yourself to the same kind of scrutiny that you subject them to. Open up your life for all the world to see and to comment on. Keep in mind that it is not just effort but achievement that counts.

When I hear the comments from people that say Hillary cares for us, it makes me sick. Most of you people know nothing about her. Why don’t you look into her past so you can get an Idea on what you are really voting for. The way she in acting now is the way she has acted her whole life. Lies and scandal sun her up in a nutshell. She has set this up so that if she cant win, McCain will. Now tell me how much she cares for the democrats that voted for Obama. The truth is, she only cares about herself. If Obama was in her place she would have told him to take a walk along time ago. Her people are the ones that made the rules and now they don’t like them because they are losing. This has nothing to do with Obama. All he did was agree to the rules that her people helped make. It’s one thing to support her in an honest race, but what you people are doing now is against everything this country stands for.

Hillary Clinton placed Floridians’ Constitutional right to have their votes fully counted the same way as in ending slavery and winning the right to vote for Black Americans and women. Clinton spoke to senior citizens whom lost their votes in the Florida recount debacle in the 2000 election. She is continuing until the Convention, if necessary, to win this fight for Florida and Michigan, calling on Sen. Barack Obama to join it. On slavery or the right to vote: “In each successive generation, this nation was blessed by men and women who refused to accept their assigned place as second-class citizens. The abolitionists and all who fought to end slavery, and ensure that freedom came with the full right of citizenship.” On the Constitutional principle: “We have certain core rights that no government can abridge and these rights are rooted in, and sustained by the principle that our Founders set forth in the Declaration of Independence. That a just government derives its power from the consent of the governed, that each of us should have an equal voice in determining the destiny of our nation.” On the Florida disenfranchisement of 2000-by corporate purging of public voter lists, Wall Street lawyers’ disruption of recounts, and Supreme Court overrule: “We believe that the outcome of our elections should be determined by the will of the people. Nothing more, nothing less. We believe the popular vote is the truest expression of your will. Back in 2000 when right here in Florida you learned the hard way what happens when you’re votes aren’t counted and a candidate with fewer votes is determined the winner. “I believe the Democratic Party must count these votes. They should count them exactly as they were cast. “Some say that counting Florida and Michigan would be changing the rules. I say that not counting Michigan and Florida is changing a central governing rule of this country–that whenever we can understand the clear intent of the voters, their votes should be counted.”

I really doubt the sincerity of the arguement by Senator Clinton. At the start of the campaign season, she along with all other nominees signed a pledge which included:
“WHEREAS, the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee will strip states of 100% of their delegatesand super delegates to the DNC National Convention if they violate the nomination calendar.
THEREFORE, I _______________, Democratic Candidate for President, in honor and in accordance with DNC rules, pledge to actively campaign in the pre-approved early states Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina. I pledge I shall not campaign or participate in any election contest occurring in any state not already authorized by the DNC to take place in the DNC approved pre-window (any date prior to February 5, 2008). Campaigning shall include but is not limited to purchasing media or campaign advocacy of any kind, attending or hosting events of more than 200 people to promote one’s candidacy for a preference primary and employing staff in the state in question. It does not include activities specifically related to raising campaign resources such as fundraising events or the hiring of fundraising staff.”
Why did she sign a pledge that contained the following premise:
“WHEREAS, the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee will strip states of 100% of their delegates and super delegates to the DNC National Convention if they violate the nomination calendar.”
Why didn’t she stand up for the “count every vote” premise then?
Seems very transparent.

Seems to me that we have forgotten that Electoral votes win the presidency (ask Al Gore). If my math is correct, Hillary has won states that produce 308 electoral votes. Obama has won states that produce 213 electoral votes. Why hasn’t this been more prominently mentioned and why have the Democrats reduced the value of winning Electoral College-significant states?

But that argument, Brad, is flawed. That is a race run in some states closed and some not.
Also remember states like Indiana were many Republicans (I’ve spoken with several who did this) voted for Clinton to prolong the primary race, which benefits their party.
Also remember that neither has campaigned well against the Republicans because they have both been pointing out each others flaws and failings (especially Clinton) for 18 months.
Polls this early on are mute. They don’t take into account general election campaigns, etc. that will go on for months before the final vote.
What’s the saying? One day can be a lifetime in politics?

One more note – Barack Obama was a veritable unknown at the start of this primary season. Today he draws crowds that are historic in size, has a grassroots campaign that is like a well oiled watch that includes ALL Americans – not just segmented stereotypes.
I feel that his campaign style and ideas are such, and his support so strong, that in a matter of a few months he can reintroduce himself in the nation that don’t know him well and make his case.
Also, if Hillary is that electable – why is she still campaigning? Why didn’t she knock out the competition in Iowa? She’s well-known and the wife of a still popular president and carries with her 35 years of political connections and contacts? If she’s so electable – why hasn’t she won?

Way to go President Hillary!
Hillary won Kentucky and West Virginia by a landslide in spite of overspending in ads 3 to 1 by Obama against Hillary. Same thing that happened in Indiana and Pennsylvannia. Obama is expected to win both Indiana and North Carolina since February. But, Hillary won Indiana and cut Obama’s lead in North Carolina from 20% in February down to 14% in spite of ad overspending by Obama.
Wake up media people or wake up superdelegates. Hillary even won consecutively in Ohio, Texas (Obama lost even he was endorsed by the Traitor Bill Richardson), and Pennsylvannia. Not to mention the other big states such as California (Obama lost in California even though Oprah, Maria Shriver, and Katherine Kennedy endorsed him), Massachusetts (Obama lost Massachusetts even though Kennedy and John Kerry endorsed him), Arkansas, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Florida (both of them are in the ballot) that are crucial in November. Hillary has the most electoral college votes based in these big states.
If you want a Democrat to win then Hillary should be the choice. HILLARY WON THE BIG STATES AND THE SWING STATES. If Hilalry is not the nominee, we will vote for McCain. African Americans are so unfair voting 9 to1 against Hillary not like the white people who fair and thinks who is the best candidate. Who is being racial now? This racial thing about Black has been OVERUSED, MISUSED and ABUSED by these people. Obama, the Obama camp, Clyburn, Wright and others can not fool us anymore. Stop this non-sense.
Wake up superdelegates! Wake up media people.

If the electoral college argument is flawed, what is the Democrat’s tally system? What significant state (other than Illinois) has Obama won? Where would the delegate count be if it were winner take all in each state? I know these are moot points, but certainly they are discussion points.

Your article fails to tell the whole story about Delegate Math.
In order to give us a full picture, why don’t you show the mathematical formula for how delegates are comprised?
For instance, in Chicago, on the Democratic ballot, we could choose Clinton or Obama. For each, you then had to select 8 delegates.
Now you need to take the total votes in my area, since its a large urban African-American city, then you calculate my one vote to make the 8 delegates I selected.
Then if you go to the rural (White) areas of Illinois, they may only have had 1 delegate. Therefore, when you show Obama with all these Delegates, you are only showing the mathematical science to his totals.
Hillary, on the other hand shows a more accurate delegate total, because she won in smaller White Areas. All the other states calculated similiar to this as well.
Can you do more figuring please and explain this more? Then please show the readers why Hillary says Obama’s totals do not reflect the full picture of votes.

Obama will NEVER win on any ticket. America needs help, not a big mouth rookie.

IT IS NOT SO FUNNY! THE CLINTONS WERE A SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE DNC OVER THE PAST 20 YEARS – WHY DID THEY NOT RECOMEND CHANGES DURING THOSE 20 YEARS? WHY NOW? YOU CANNOT MOVE THE GOLD-POST DURING THE GAME ! LIKE GREAT DEMOCRATS, BILL AND HILLARY NEED TO COME TOGETHER AND FOCUS AT THE GOP AND JOHN MCCAIN. TOGETHER WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL! WE CANNOT CONTINUE TO RECEIVE OUR CHILDREN IN BODY BAGS FROM A STUPID WAR, AND TO HAVE $4&$5 GAS. THE POWER TO STOP THIS MADNESS IS IN THE HANDS OF THE DEMOCRATS – LET US COME TOGETHER AND DO WHAT IS RIGHT AND FAIR AND JUST FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND FOR ALL AMERICANS. Sincerely, Lake Hart, a Native American Writer.
