Democratic Recount Lawyer Takes Umbrage with Clinton Invoking Recount

I wondered what the Democratic recount lawyers thought of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, invoking that madness from 2000 in the current controversy about seating the Florida and Michigan delegations.

A recount lawyer who is neutral in the primary contest told me, "I don’t think it is a very apt usage of the recount. There is a big difference between what happened in Florida in 2000 – where partisan officials did everything possible to achieve an advantage in vote counting, where laws and rules were broken, and where the Supreme Court defied law and tradition to stop a vote count – and what is happening now, where we are having a party rules dispute that is open, above-board, and everyone knew about before the election was held."
Concludes the lawyer: "It’s apples and oranges."

this will come back to bite the Democrats in the GE.
The Democrat party in favor of disenfranchising voters. Great.
The Democrat party arguing for not to count the votes after 2000. This is laughable if it wasnt so serious.

Which one is much more important, the stupid rules of the Democratic Party or the fundamental values of “One vote one person”?

Mrs.Hillary Clinton should be grateful to accept defeat in good spirit. I hope you will not permanently destroy what is left of Clinton legacy. Quit gracefully before you are disgraced out.You are fighting for nobody but for yourself.Desperation has no place in modern democracy. This is the voice of wisdom for you again. People have spoken.period!

Did everything possible to achieve an advantage in vote counting (going for delegates in rudely aggressive caucasus), rules were broken (Obama ad in FL and Obama surrogates and media promoting anti Hillary vote in MICH), stop a vote (telling everyone it’s over that Obama is the nominee bombardment from surrogates and media). Well I extracted the parts of the lawyer’s response that does fit into this argument. Hillary is right! It’s not only a rip off, it is a bully, intimidating, propaganda media control and influence RIP OFF! Obama’s media image is not reflective of his BRASS KNUCKLE POLITICS and a lot of us HIGHLY EDUCATED Hillary supporters KNOW.

Michael,
Yes, people in FL and MI have spoken, but sorry they do not count. Does that really make sense? This is not desperation. This is about violating fundamental democratic values.

I can’t believe Democrats are making arguments against being Democratic. Obama’s “Change”. Yeah, thanks dude…..

Obama has problem with blue-color workers, problem with Jews, problem with Hispanic, problems with women. He has so many extreme ideas and positions on national security, abortion rights (infantcile), gun control, gay marriage, etc. He is exactly the most liberal senator. How can he win in November?
Did John Kerry have so much trouble back in 2004? I remeber everyone was talking about how democrats were unified and determined to beat Bush. We were so excited that Kerry will win. There were people doing polling on their own, and I did mine too. People who had voted for Gore would vote for Kerry, people who had voted for Bush first time would switch to Kerry. Everybody thought John Kerry would win, yet he lost. And lost Big!!!
This time, at this early stage, Obama has already shown so many flaws – republicans haven’t launched their attacks yet. Everyday, he said new stupid things, and then tried to correct them by saying more stupid things.
Obama is leading demo’s hope to dream, he is so arrogant. I really want democrats win, but I am having hard time voting for him. We need hillary!

Would someome please show me Senator Hillary Clinton’s signature where she signed off on deleting the votes for MI and FL. It was the VIPs of the Democratic Party who made this decision, not the voters or Hillary Clinton. Senator Obama wants the decision to stand because he lost both states.

All this s— is why Republicans will win yet again. That makes 9 out of the last 11 Presidential elections going to the Republicans.

Korey,
How about Obama sitting in Reverend Wright’s pews for more than 20 years? And even worse, he would let his two young daughters sitting in the same pews with him. The point is, if you are trying to find guilt by association, Obama’s association is much worse.

The democratic parth is broke and can’t be fixed what we need is a third party .

Posted by: Bishop | May 22, 2008, 5:57 pm 5:57 pm

First – Hilalry was seen on TV saying that Michigan didn’t matter and that both Michigan and Florida should be punished for breaking the rules that the other 48 states agreed to abide by. Second – Senator Obama has never said he “wants the decision to stand because he lost both states.” In fact, he has been outspoken to find a way that they could be counted equitably (unlike Clinton who wants all or nothing). Finally, who says we lost the race. The general election hasn’t started yet. Ironically, it’s Hillary who is pushing her “right” based on a map created by Karl Rove, not Obama. Hillary needs to decide if she’s a Democrat or a Republican.

I find it amazing that so many superdelegates came over to Obama’s side after there was an announcement that his campaign had put aside $20 million to help the superdelegates in the next election. A few days later, the Democratic Party ofrficials confirmed this saying a fund had been set up. So, is this buying an election or what??? I say it is. DIRTY POLITICS. BAD BAD

As a woman, I feel Hillary is a complete embarrassment to my gender. She claims now to be so worried about Florida votes being counted, but yet she’s willing to disenfranchise the voters that did not vote in the “primary” because it was understood that the votes would not count. She should have fought this hard to get the votes counted before she agreed they wouldn’t be counted. If she were to steal the nomination, I would just suffer through a McCain presidency.

Posted by: Kate | May 22, 2008, 6:19 pm 6:19 pm

you cant take away the nomination from the guy who has played by the rules and won, and NOT to mention he is the first african american to ever reach this historic point in our country.
This was not stolen from hillary, she lost
if the tables were turned you could not steal the election from her
it is just sick that she is attempting this crazy suicide mission
I do think that we should find some resolve to the delegates in florida and michigan…
obamas team has tried to strike a deal and even though the clinton team has said seating 50% of the delegates we wouldnt even be talking about this anymore…
however, they are rejecting that as of now…
so, its pretty good for party unity…lol

It’s time to send a clear and loud message to Howard Dean and the DNC!
If Hillary is not nominated then vote for John McCain in November and a solid Republican ticket!
If Obama loses the General Election (which he probably will), McCain will be a one term president and Hillary can come back and win in 2012!
The DNC needs to FIRE Howard Dean for disenfranchising the voters of Michigan and Florida!
The Democratic Party needs to learn a lesson in November about messing with their loyal base.
I’m a Democrat and I’m voting for the Republicans in November if Hillary is forced out!

The Democratic Party is fractured and permanently broken. We are not just Hillary supporters, we are not just not Obama supporters, we are moderates who can’t sign on to what the left wing believes in, Chicago radicals to run the country.
Ain’t going to happen no matter what Hillary does. And the left wing isn’t going to vote for Hillary after she stood up to them as we asked her to stand for us, so we’ll just have to go our separate ways.
The left wing Democrats with Obama will get beat again this year and never win again for that matter with someone whose closest associates are Black Liberation Theology preacher Wright, Marxist terrorist Ayers, and anti-everything but black but especially Jews leader Farrakan, along with a Muslim heritage and ties to terrorist groups like Hamas, and mentored by Syrian corruption king Rezko who bought Obama’s $265,000 mansion grounds for him with money wired in from Saddam’s moneyman Auchi. This after being elected to the US Senate less than four years ago!
Holy cow. And you think anyone but a latte liberal would vote for that mess to run this country? You’re out of your minds.
And I don’t even want to hear the killing or not killing of babies and soldiers argument for choosing next best to Hillary, the only choice left, McCain.
That being because Republicans inexplicably chose the only Republican who Hillary supporters could vote for.
So be it. We go our separate ways. I hope Hillary can get to the ballot some other way.
Hillary ’08

It is truly amazing to me to see the democratic party, the party that has benefited so much from the black community, be willing change the rules in the middle of the game just to keep a clear winner from getting the nomination.
Hillary Clinton, someone I used to admire, who lost my support when she started the campaign running on the continuation of the war in Iraq, because of her refusal to step down has created and now represents an element of the population who are really deep rooted racists. Of course this is not at all says that everyone who supports Hillary is a racist. Some would like to see a woman president, others feel they must be loyal to the Clintons because of Bill’s service in office. But, A very uncomforting number of her supporters simply don’t want a black man in there. This Fact was proven in the past primaries she has won. Exit polls show that a large number of them voted based on race. Plus, young students, some taking time out from school, making calls and going door to door campaigning for someone they truly believe in, were treated very unamerican with vulgar remarks and statements like “I’ll never vote for a black man” or “Hang him from a tree”.
Mr. Obama is ahead because of his message, because he was the first candidate who said something about change. He was the only candidate talking about helping everyone in America not just special interests groups. He has managed a remarkable campaign. That in itself shows great leadership.
Face it folks, the man has come a long way going against a sure thing and the best you can do to hurt him is to talk about his former pastor? Get real. The Man Deserves A Chance. Besides, if Hillary can’t beat Obama, how can she beat McCain?

I never saw that.. When did this happen. Don’t just say “I saw it!” or “I heard it!”.
That’s so “Obama-ish”.
In fact, that’s how Obama has become a martyr to some of you.
He sold you on his self -hype. He sold you on the fiction he created in his two semi-biographical novels.
Few of you bothered to question them but those of you who did were faced with a lot of inconsistancies.
In response to Obama’s “audacity”, someone came up with “OBAMA LAUNDRY LIST OF LIES Audacity of Hypocrisy ”
Most if not ALL of it has been fact:checked…… and you might find it very interesting to get a different perspective on your ido.

Democratic Party Rules: Florida and Michigan votes can’t count because they broke the rules by moving up their primary election date.
Democratic Party Rules: Delegates needed to become the nominee = 2026
Democratic Party Rules: Super delegates votes don’t count until the convention.
Oh wait, we CAN change those rules if it benefits Obama.(Obama also broke the rules by running a television ad in Florida.)

The democratic party has abandoned the moderates and it’s socially progressive history. It’s no long the party of the people. It’s now the party of the few and the elitists who want to commandeer our money for the socialization of America.

what policy or policies makes Obama “left-wing” that is different than hillary’s and that you all don’t agree with?
can someone list me some…one?
List me a real policy… talking to people…that isn’t left wing many of the republicans are now saying the same thing.
Name me one “left wing” policy just one…that is different than Hillary’s because it is more left wing…
Healthcare? he focuses on cost she on it’s universality… he is more to the right than her on that
the war? not since she saw the polls
NAFTA not if you believe the past two months of the primaries…
taxes…the same
fighting with republicans rather than working with them… oh that’s not obama.
I am not sure what you all are saying.
I think this left wing thing is just your way of making yourselves feel better about not voting on the issues but out of anger that your candidate lost.
You are not voting on your children’s futures …you are voting on your own hurt feelings.

“you cant take away the nomination from the guy who has played by the rules and won, and NOT to mention he is the first african american to ever reach this historic point in our country.”
The point was the Democrats need to win the election, not make a statement about racial reapportionment of power. He has delegates from States the Democrats will lose in November. He lost the states that have delegates the Democrats can win. Rules is rules and math is math but electoral math is the one that counts and the rules there are not the rules of mau-mau caucus tactics.
You really did drink the kool-aid.

WHO IS REALLY RUNNING FOR THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION?
Answer: Pelosi, Dean, Shummer and the other ultra-left elitists. Obama is their chosen vehicle to advance their agenda of making everyone the same (except, of course, themselves). They want to take all risks and differences away from individuals and make carbon copies of their lemmings.
Don’t let it happen!

Posted by: S | May 22, 2008, 6:59 pm 6:59 pm

Mccain does not represent more traditional democratic values…
now your just making things up to make yourselves feel better
McCain is for burdening the middle class and lower classes to give the rich this tax break
McCain is for continueing a budget heavily reliant on China
McCain is for continueing a war …with all the tragedy it continues to bring that has no clear purpose…it sure isn’t making us safer.
McCain has overturning Roe as his second or third talking point.
McCain wants the next possible 3 supreme court justices to be conservative
Mccain thinks the market that we have relied on is the main issue and fix responsible for the housing crisis and bad mortgages and people losing their homes
McCain thinks the market is the key to cost reduction with healthcare.
McCain thinks porkbarrel is bad but still to this day continues using lobbyists as his two main campaign hands.
McCain believes that the Committee for Liberation of Iraq which he helped run back in 2002/3 that lobbied for us to go to war was correct…the President of theat organization and head chair is his two most prominent foreign policy advisors…
so tell me again how McCain is closer to “traditional democratic values”
that is either dumb or sadly and tactically said out of spite and anger because it is patenetly untrue and not what our nation needs.

Posted by: dl | May 22, 2008, 7:03 pm 7:03 pm

THINK ABOUT IT.
Who best represents moderate democratic values. McCain or Obama? Can there be any doubt that Obama is so far left that he’s forced the typical democrat to choke in the dust? Can there be any doubt about who best represents the values of the United States?

ljmj :
….but you ARE pretty much calling anyone not voting for Obama a racist….just as you Obama followers pretty much belittling Hillaryites by blabelling them as stupid!
As a Hillaryite, I consider myself reasonably clever and ready in every way to accept, support and vote for a black… or asian… or American Indian (most fitting).. or Latino…. or eurasian or Indian American Citizen for President if I felt that he or she would be the best leader for my country.
I do not feel that Obama is the best choice for our country at this time. I am not uncomfortable with the idea of HIM in the white house BUT I AM EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE with the thought of his buddies Auchi, and Dohrn,
and Odinga and Rezko and some of his other rather questionable associates of sitting around the tabe in the Oval Office planning our foreign policy.
I don’t like his Healthcare program.
I didn’t like the idea of the second Jeremiah speech; it made B O come across as terribly two-faced.
I don’t like his having taken money from Rezko which had been put away to heat the tenement homes of the poor.
I wouldn’t feel any different if he were white….. though I don’t think he would have gotten as far as he had if he were.
But you will never change your mind about us….
And I will never during this travesty of an election change my mind about him
So I am hoping to be given the opportunity to vote for Hillary which is why I again say:
GIVE ‘EM, HELL, HILLARY!!!

Posted by: Tony | May 22, 2008, 7:41 pm 7:41 pm

Fact is Obama lawyers were dispatched in March to push some bs legal argument to block revotes that all parties wanted. In the sense that a candidate sent his legal team to block the votes of two states from being accurately counted or revoted, the two situations seem very comparable. If revotes were done in March like everybody wanted, except Obama, this wouldn’t be an issue now and cast a cloud over the Dem nomination process. By March everyone saw that it was a mistake to lock out FLA and MI, everyone but the Obama camp. Obama supressed the simple solution, which was a revote.

I am amazed at how many Americans are willing to accept the rewriting of the rules by Sen Clinton. If you sign an agreement with your name, you are vouching for your personal integrity as a honest and fair broker. It is very refreshing to see the level of interest in US politics, and the high level of support for the Democratic candidates. But that is no excuse, to justify a lack of ethics by Sen Clinton in her Quixotic quest to steal a nomination.

If the situation were reversed, and Obama wanted to change things at this stage, Hillary would be jumping up and down, demanding that the rules can’t be changed. — She’s not really interested in the right of these people to have their votes counted, she is interested in 1) being president and 2) being in the news. — It’s very unfortunate.

If Hillary is not nominated then vote for John McCain in November and a solid Republican ticket!
***************
The only message this sends to the DNC and Howard Dean is “I was never a true Democrat in the first place, because if I WAS I would vote on Democratic Ideals and voting Republican would be repugnant to me”

I see that the Clinton smoke machine is having its desired impact. Blow enough of it and the facts eventually become irrelevant.
Obama did not block the Michigan revote.
The Michigan legislature did. Part of their reason for doing so was the logistical difficulty of putting the primary together on short notice. The State’s local election officials said that it couldn’t be done.
The more significant part was a backlash to Hillary showing up in Michigan, having one of her foot stomping hissy fits, and having her millionaire cronies send the legislators a letter saying that they’d put together the money to pay for a revote. Several legislators, including some of her own supporters, didn’t want to be seen as caving into this stuff.

I find it funny that some dems are surprised their party tries to re-write rule or disenfranchising voters.
In Florida the issue was not the recount but how Gore wanted to do the recount, he only wanted to recount certain areas that were heavily Democratic and not recount the rest nor did he want to count the military vote! The supreme Court ruled that the recount must be all of Florida, but since it was past the date of requesting it by Florida law the count stays as is. But multiple news groups since then have done their own recount of the state and each and every time found that Pres. Bush won and by a bigger margin.
So get over it!!
In 2004 the Libs flattened the tires of Buses that were to bring Republicans to the voting booth,
Oh and lets not forget the Delegates and Obama staff calling black Superdelagates and threatening them to vote for Obama (See California)
